Stanground Chat Club is a club for retired people which meets at Stanground Community Centre from 1.30- to 3.30 every other Tuesday.
The club offers social activities, outings and most importantly somewhere to go and enjoy a cup of tea and other peoples company. The club has many activities programmed in throughout the year including speakers on subjects such as Life on the Home Front; How the Straw Bear Festival came about to the history of Railworld. Activities such as skittle competitions, to Chair Exercise, a Line Dancing Demonstration and Musical Bingo. There is also the opportunity to go on a number of outings during the course of the year. YOUR people, YOUR community, YOUR church
Halloween is always the last day of October, and we think about all things nasty and creepy and scary. Seems we quite like to be a bit scared as long as we have a nice sofa to hide behind if it all gets too much! It cheers me to remember that the day after halloween is 1st November. This is All Saints Day when we remember the superheroes of faith who did wonderfully good things which often involved standing up to danger, evil and oppression. Then on 2nd November, we have another commemoration. This time it is a chance to remember those people we love who have died. In some cultures families gather in the cemetery to remember. Here, in St
John’s, at 5pm that day we have a special service of commemoration with a chance to light a candle for your loved ones and to have their names read out. Or, for those who want to just to say a prayer and light a candle the church will be open from 3-5 in the afternoon for quiet prayer. Finally, on this year when we commemorate the 110th anniversary of the start of WW1, I know that you won’t forget our annual Remembrance Sunday, 11th November at 10.30 in St John’s. May God bless you all at this time of remembering.

Line Dancing
What Is Line Dancing? Line dancing is exactly what its name implies: people dancing in lines to music. Line dances are choreographed dances with a repeating series of steps that are performed in unison by a group of people in lines or rows.
Ron Bloye has been teaching line dancing for the past 20 years. The group meets every Wednesday at the Stanground Community Centre and it is a very popular, fun and sociable group.
All of the dancers performing a line dance face the same direction and perform the steps at exactly the same time. Although there are usually several lines of dancers, small groups may only form one line. Line dancers rarely interact with each other during a dance, as the steps are performed by everyone at the same time.

Although many popular line dances are set to country music, the first line dances did not originate from country and western dancing. Ron is now looking for new members and is offering two free taster sessions on Wednesday 5th and Wednesday 12th of November 2014. Everybody welcome including children as long as accompanied by an adult. All types of music are worked with at the group so there is defiantly something for everybody. If you are interested there is no need to book just turn up in sensible shoes with a bottle of water. Tea and Coffee is provided.

Line dancing is believed to have originated from folk dancing , which has many similarities. Contra dancing , a form of American folk dance in which the dancers form two parallel lines and perform a sequence of dance movements with different partners down the length of the line, probably had a huge influence on the line dancing steps we a familiar with today. During the 1980’s, line dances began to be created for popular country songs.

Fireworks and bonfires can be plenty of fun for all the family to enjoy. The fire service recommends going to an organised firework display instead of holding one at home, however, if you do use fireworks or light a bonfire at home, we would ask residents to take on board our safety advice to ensure it is just their fireworks that go off with a bang: • Keep fireworks in a closed box and always follow the instructions. • Light them at arm’s length using a taper and stand well back. • Never go back to a lit firework. • Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them. • Don’t light bonfires in unsuitable weather, particularly in windy conditions. • Don’t leave bonfires unattended. • Build bonfires well clear of buildings, fences and hedge. • Never use flammable liquids to start the fire, and never burn dangerous rubbish such as aerosols, paint, foam furniture, rubber tyres, and batteries. • Before you light the bonfire, check that children and animals are not hiding inside and are a safe distance away.

Cardea Update
As I write this it feels as if suddenly the long hot summer has ended and autumn is upon us, blustery and rainy outside its good to be cosy indoors with a cuppa and the slow cooker bubbling away in the background. Greetings from Cardea. I love the warm weather and we’ve been very lucky this year but I also look forward to the autumn and its lovely colours and traditions. In my family this includes a fire pit party hosted by my brother and his family, whatever the weather we gather in the garden around the fire which the men gleefully keep ablaze (what is it with men and fire?) we all bring delicious food including jacket potatoes, chilli, spicy Samos’s, sausages and of course chocolate brownies which all taste somehow yummier eaten in the glow of
the fire and the wood smoke! We also enjoy our first cups of mulled wine for the festive season. Which reminds me of my personal challenge to Go Sober for October in aid of Macmillan Cancer Care, I’m abstaining from alcohol in the hope that I raise some money for this fantastic charity. We are extremely fortunate in that we can choose to drink and eat whatever we fancy, we don’t know what it’s like to go without, go hungry or not to have choice but that is not the case for everyone. I know that come November I can enjoy my favourite

tipple but for someone with a diagnosis of cancer this luxury is not a given and so if my challenge makes some of you think how cancer affects all of us and give a pound or two then I’ve achieved my aim. If you want to donate to this worthy cause please go to the GoSober for October website and search for Kate Ferris. Talking of matters health related we have some exciting news, Cardea will very soon have its own team of First Responders, and training is taking place this week after lots of planning and persistence by the CRA. Local businesses have contributed towards the cost of essential equipment; we have raised money via tombola at St Michaels Festival and as always Councillor Marco Cereste have helped us so many thanks to all involved including Impra Gas, Morrison’s and ELE . This means that in the very near future we have the peace of mind knowing that should we have the need to call for an ambulance we have trained First Responders able to be with us within minutes. This is another building block in place for our growing and thriving community at Cardea. Another facility in the planning is a youth club for the young people , at the moment this is in its infancy but watch this space for updates on this as we believe that it’s incredibly important for our children to have some where to go and things to do. We are very fortunate that we have lots of dedicated, enthusiastic people amongst us keen to make Cardea a great place to grow up! Looking forward I know that winter with its short days and long nights can be a lonely time for some and so we will be holding a Saturday morning coffee and chat group on a monthly basis, dates to be arranged, please look out for these on our My Cardea Face Book page and also on Morrison’s notice board, these are an opportunity to meet up with other residents and just have a natter, catch up on local developments and make new friends. Everyone is welcome, please spread the word, we have toys and refreshments for the little ones and plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits for the adults so hope to see you there. We are also starting to plan our Christmas events for Cardea so again check the Face Book page and Morrison’s board for details.

Knightfest – a unique celebration of music & beer in aid of Alzheimer Research UK On 1st November, the Heron Pub in Stanground, Peterborough will host Knightfest, a unique event featuring a whole day of the some of the best live acts and real ales from across the region. The festival has been organised to raise funds for Alzheimer Research UK and is the idea of local musician Dave Knight and his partner Jayne Paul. Together with the assistance of a small team of volunteers they hope to raise both awareness and vital funds to aid research into the illness which affects many thousands of people every year.

News & updates... St Michael’s Pre-School, Mace Road We’ve had a lovely half term here at St Michael’s with visits to the local park and shops, an art competition and our harvest festival. We’re getting ready for Christmas, with lots of fun activities planned including our Nativity on the 14th December. We’ve welcomed Leanne to the team and all our new children and their families have settled in well. As the days get darker, we’ll be having lots of indoor and outdoor fun, using our senses and experiencing the changing of seasons in different ways. St John’s Primary School St John’s Primary School has already been very busy so far this term learning all about World War One. To launch our topic, we held a Recruitment Day, where children experienced what it would be like as a Soldier or a Nurse. Children learnt First Aid to care for the injured soldiers, completed Drills showing discipline, and endured Assault Courses for Fitness. Even some of the teachers had a go! Year 4 pupils also have researched the poppies at the Tower of London, and looked at why poppies are significant. They then recreated their own poppies from clay, as well as creating their own water-coloured paintings. To extend our learning further, we have an exciting trip planned to the Imperial War Museum where we shall learn about Toys in World War One and Forces of Flight. A busy term ahead!

Stanground Academy Students at the Stanground Academy have been taking part in the ‘Operation Smokestorm’ project run by the Peterborough City Council. The programme is designed to educate young people about the dangers of smoking through a fun and interactive approach. The mission is to design an advertisement showing all the information they have learnt as a secret spy within a tobacco company. Student entries were judged at the Peterborough Town Hall last Friday (26 September) and seven students from the Stanground Academy were recognised for their outstanding contribution to promoting positive health messages at the Youth Health Awards. All seven students received awards for their hard work in promoting the anti-smoking message (Operation smoke storm) with three of our students excelling themselves in receiving gold in the written category and silver in the musical category.

Blackberry House Day Nursery is getting ready for a fun filled Autumn Term! We have been looking at the changes in the weather and environment around us. Nature walks have meant we can explore conkers, cones and the changing leaves. Pre-School have been exploring Harvest time, and learnt a fantastic harvest song. We have been using some Autumn and Harvest objects as part of our creative play, including apple rolling, corn rubbing and leaf printing. Blackberries are planning some games and activities as part of supporting the charity ’Children In Need’. The children are awaiting an exciting bonfire night. We will be looking at staying safe with our pre-school, as well as the colours, shapes, movements and noise that are experienced at this wonderful time of the year.

Perfect for Bonfire Night
Chilli Burgers
For the burgers 2 rashers of streaky bacon chopped 1 tomato chopped 2bsp extra lean mince beef 1tbsp tomato puree
For the Relish 1 Red pepper deseeded and diced 2 tomatoes deseeded and diced 1 small onion chopped 2 tbsp tomato ketchup 1tsp Vinegar 1tbsp parsley chopped
Method Dry fry the bacon for a few minutes until it it just beginning to crisp. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook for 2 minutes. Stir in the Cajun seasoning. Place the mince in a bowl and add the bacon mixture and puree. Season well and squish the mixture together. Divide into 4 and shape into patties. Grill on a ridged griddle or under the grill for 15 minutes. Meanwhile make the relish. Throw the relish ingredients into a food processor and process for a few seconds.
To serve Place the burger on a bagel with the relish salad and chunky potato wedges. Recipe provided from MoorFarm Meats Newborough

The Fenman The Fenman has been rather quiet over the last few months, but has recently come under new management with Dave Foster at the helm. A refurbishment is currently underway.
The Woolpack I went along to their ‘Open Mic’ which was fantastic – a real mix of people, music genres and styles on show with audience members joining in singing along and sometimes impulsively getting up to perform! It was a really good atmosphere. Next one’s; Sunday 26th October and Sunday 30th November from 3pm onwards. Free afternoon of acoustic guitar music with Steve Bean and his classical guitar which has a Flamenco influence and includes various music genres such as; Jazz, Folk, Country and Soul. His repertoire features pieces by The Beatles, Queen, Lady Gaga, John Williams in addition to some classical numbers. Come see him on Sunday16th November from 4-6pm. Pensions and Divorce – the Facts We read and hear about celebrity divorces all of the time. The press is full of articles about who got the “City Apartment” or “Villa in Marbella”, but what about the less glamorous, but often more valuable asset – The Pension? When couples divorce, the Court must consider all of the assets, including the available pension provision. In many cases, other than the home, the biggest asset is a pension, especially if one party has worked in the public sector or has a final salary scheme pension. Quite often, one party has a greater pension provision than the other, particularly if one partner has spent time out of the workplace looking after the children. The Court has three main options in dealing with pensions upon divorce: • Offsetting – the pension owner keeps their pension and the other retains another asset i.e. house or savings • Attachment orders – the pension remains in the name of the owner but the other “flags” a share of the pension to become payable to them when the pension owner retires • Pensions sharing orders – pension is split (not always equally) and some of the pension is transferred from that party’s pension to the other party’s pension – they are then in control of how to invest and manage the pension and when to draw the pension. This is the most usual way to split pensions on divorce. Anyone with thinking of divorce or separation regardless of the issues should obtain legal advice. Remember Remember… That time of year is here again, the children have dressed up in their costumes and begged for candy from total strangers. It’s the time of year that all dentists dread with cavities round every corner but I guess they shouldn’t complain if the business is booming Shortly after Halloween, we all begin preparing for the festivities of bonfire night and although loads of us celebrate it each year, not everyone understands the story. Well here’s a little sum up. Years ago in on the 5th of November 1605 a group of Catholics conspirators made a plot ‘The Gunpowder Plot’ to destroy the House of Lords by blowing it up and attempting to kill King James. However the plan was foiled and Guy himself was arrested while he was guarding the Gunpowder. Therefore Guy Fawkes Night was invented for people to celebrate the survival of their King! Although some traditions have died out over time, some are going strong and even some new ones are being invented. One tradition that has stood the test of time is the ‘Guy’ or Pope, which is often thrown upon the bonfire. In past times this was to express hostility for the Pope. Often children would carry the Guy through the streets and ask for a penny for their guy so that they could go and buy fireworks for the night. Fireworks weren’t always a tradition on Guy Fawkes Night but as the anniversary of the plot

became more famous and more of a social event, new ideas flooded in. Now the fifth of November is a huge event full of fireworks and huge bonfires all competing to be the largest one yet. A simple little way to remember the events from that night is written in a famous nursery rhyme. The rhyme is still sung today and was made famous in it’ appearance in V for Vendetta.
Remember, Remember! The fifth of November, Gunpowder, treason and plot I see no reason, Why Gunpowder treason. Should never be forgot! The tune does carry on but these are the most famous lines and were written years ago and mysteriously the writer is still unknown. So now you know what bonfire night is all about (if you didn’t already)! It’s up to you how you what to spend the night. Whether you’re going to stay traditional or just be social, remember remember, what it’s all about.

...your pets this November! Fireworks are enjoyed year-round by people but can be a source of fear for many animals. It doesn’t have to be that way though, so don’t ignore the problem. Seek advice from your vet who will if necessary; be able to refer you to a professional clinical animal behaviourist. You can also follow our top tips to make firework celebrations less frightening for your pet.
Keeping cats and dogs secure • Make sure your dog or cat always has somewhere to hide if he or she wants to and has access to this place at all times. For example this could be under some furniture or in a cupboard. • During firework seasons, walk dogs during daylight hours and keep cats and dogs indoors when fireworks are likely to be set off. • At nightfall close windows and curtains and put on music to mask and muffle the sound of fireworks. • If your pet shows any signs of fear try to ignore their behaviour. Leave them alone unless they are likely to harm themselves. • Never punish or fuss over your pet when it’s scared as this will only make things worse in the long run. • Make sure your cat or dog is always kept in a safe and secure environment and can’t escape if there’s a sudden noise. Have your pet microchipped in case they do escape.

Question: I am just about to move into the property market as a first time home buyer and understand that I have to pay something called “Stamp Duty” – is this correct? Answer: Unfortunately yes if you are buying a property for between £125,001 and £250,000 you will have to pay Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) at a rate of 1%. SDLT has long been an unwelcome extra faced by first-time buyers trying to get onto the housing ladder, yet one that they have grudgingly had to pay. However, it is not only first time buyers new to the market that are unprepared. Properties costing between £250,001 and £500,000 attract SDLT at 3 per cent. Put another way, purchase a property for £250,000 and you will have to fork out £2,500 in SDLT; purchase at £250,001 (an extra £1) and you face a £7,500 bill. The rates also increase the higher the purchase price. However, you don’t pay any SDLT if your purchase price is £125,000 or less.

You may have heard talk about the “enquiry window”, meaning the time limit for HMRC to begin their enquiries (it used to be called an investigation) into a tax return. The length of this “window” varies – for example, the “window” for a return of SDLT is nine months after the return is filed, but the commonest “window” you will come across is that for self assessment tax returns (income tax, capital gains tax, and corporation tax), and this window is twelve months from the date the return is filed. For example, the income tax and capital gains tax self assessment for the tax year 2012/13 was due to be filed by 31 January 2014. If it was in fact filed on that day, then HMRC have until 31 January 2015 to open an “enquiry” into that return. If, however, the return was filed earlier, say on 1 July 2013, then HMRC’s “enquiry window” will have closed on 1 July 2014. Once the enquiry window has closed, HMRC cannot then look into or ask for further details, but can still open an enquiry if they can show they have made a “discovery”.

Fish & Chips...
Winter is coming
and more!
I was thinking... When I woke up this morning, I thought there had been some kind of mistake. Were my eyes still closed? No, had my alarm gone off at the wrong time? No. It really was the depressingly early time of half 6. Then why was it so dark? I don’t know how these dark mornings have crept up on me. I can’t say I am a fan if I’m honest. It’s not all bad though, apart from being blinded by the kitchen lights each morning. I quite like the weather when it’s gone a bit chilly. The opportunity to wrap up warm in all the comfy warm clothes I own and not to mention the fun of a long fire in the living room, if I can get to the fire before the cat does obviously, who I’m certain would be quite happy to lie all there all night and cook herself if I didn’t turn her over periodically. I’m hoping for snow this year too. After last year’s disappointment, it would be nice to see the land blanketed in white again. I will admit, at its very best snow makes getting to work on a motorbike interesting, at its worst, it makes it downright dangerous. But I like to gloss over that fact. It’s all forgotten when I get to take my snowboard down to Tenter Hill and spend a few hours making myself look silly in front of the “Stanground Ski Club”. If you don’t believe me about the ski club, come down and have a look if it snows. If there is no one there, check the pub, I can’t stress enough how important après ski is. I realise now that I’m just over halfway through and I seem to have run out of things I like about winter. I suppose there’s Christmas to look forward to, but I don’t generally like to start shopping for that until about mid December, so I guess that’s a theme for another month.

Halloween is this month though! I can’t really complain about Halloween, I very much enjoy all the offers Tesco put on sweets that I can pick up on my lunch breaks, I find it’s sometimes possible to create a stockpile of them that can last well into November. All this in exchange for one night of resolutely ignoring people knocking on my front door. I don’t share sweets. This leads me onto bonfire night. It still astounds me that bonfire night is legal. A night full of people drinking, starting large fires, and playing with explosives just doesn’t sound like a recipe for success to me. But at least the explosions that terrify the cat add a nice atmosphere to watching a war film on TV, it’s like having a cheap surround sound set. In a perfect world I’d finish off this months column with something profound, but I’m at a loss for anything like that right now while I’m watching Karl Pilkington in a shark cage. So just a simple request instead. Please turn off your fog lights when it isn’t foggy. It hurts my eyes.

On 1st October 2014, a pioneering new hub was launched by Cambridgeshire Police to help support victims of crime by providing a more centralised and co-ordinated local framework for help and support. Funding for this service passed from the Ministry of Justice to Police & Crime Commissioners to enable a far more locally driven provision for victims of crime to be created. All forces have to change the way they operate their victim support by the spring 2015, so Cambridgeshire Constabulary were keen to start early. They are one of seven forces leading the way nationally to provide a local service for victims, from which a range of support can be accessed. Victims of crime will be assessed to determine the level of support they need and then helped in the most appropriate way, bringing in specialist services and other agencies as required. By managing support services at a local level, the service will be better able to meet the needs of the communities and target provision to where it is most needed. Officers investigating crime will highlight vulnerable victims to the hub - but all victims of crime will be given contact details for the hub if they feel they need extra support. How crime affects a victim or witness depends entirely on the individual. The most important thing to remember is that a more centralised and efficient network of help is now available.
