Back on Broadway!

Bill Kenwright re-opens Peterborough theatre for a spectacular winter season

he Broadway Theatre is set to be given a new lease of life with a spectacular winter season created especially for Peterborough’s no. 1 venue. In response to considerable demand, West End producer Bill Kenwright will present award-winning shows such as Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s ground-breaking rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, which opens this fantastic season on 17 November and features West End stars Glenn Carter and Tim Rogers as Jesus and Judas, and X Factor finalist Rachel Adedeji as Mary Magdalene. That will be followed by a week of murder, mystery and a cast of household names, as the Agatha Christie Theatre Company brings the Queen of Crime’s best-selling thriller And Then There Were None – recently voted ‘the world’s favourite Agatha Christie’ - to the Broadway as part of its successful 2015 UK tour. It stars Dalziel and Pascoe’s Colin Buchanan, Peak Practice’s Deborah Grant, Blue Peter’s Mark Curry and Duty Free’s Neil Stacy. The hills will come alive with a stunning new production of The Sound of Music, which coincides with this year’s 50th anniversary of the film version - the most successful movie musical in history – and promises to enchant and enthral the young and the young at

heart. Fresh from her success on BBC One’s The Voice, Lucy O’Byrne steps into the iconic role of Maria. Two shows by producer Paul Taylor-Mills are set to bring festive fun for all the family. Based on the classic and much-loved book by Dr Seuss, The Cat in the Hat is set to cause mischief and mayhem in a production that will delight younger audience members and, based on one of the most popular films of all time, Kris Kringle sets out to prove he’s the real Santa Claus in Miracle On 34th Street, The Musical. Musical theatre and movie legend Tommy Steele will then take to the stage to star in The Glenn Miller Story, this year’s biggest new musical success. The extraordinary tale of the world’s most famous big band leader will be told as never before, and features a spectacular 16 piece orchestra plus sensational performers and dazzling choreography. This will also be a welcome return to The Broadway for Tommy after delighting pre-Christmas audiences in 2013 when he played the title role in Scrooge. December also sees the premiere of an exclusive new show created for The Broadway. Dreamboats and Petticoats: The Christmas Party will see Bobby, Laura, Sue and Norman return to perform everyone’s

favourite Christmas hits including Jingle Bell Rock and Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree live from St Mungo’s, the youth club where it all began for the Essex gang. Bill Kenwright said: “For those of you who have followed the Dreamboats saga, we present a world premiere written especially for Peterborough: Dreamboats & Petticoats: The Christmas Party. An all-new festive family Rock ‘n’ Roll musical. Come and hear those Jingle Bells Rock!” By huge popular demand, a musical favourite of theatregoers everywhere, Willy Russell’s multi-award winning Blood Brothers returns to Peterborough. On Sunday 20 December Christmas Magic will include Peterborough Male Voice Choir with Peterborough Voices, Youth Choir and Festival Orchestra under the direction of Will Prideaux, who will also be the Broadway Theatre manager for the Bill Kenwright season. Bill added: “I really hope there is something here for everyone to enjoy. Peterborough is a terrific city and last time around it was clear to me that the people of Peterborough want, deserve and support top quality theatrical productions. I would like to see a time when the Broadway is reinstated in full, and has year round shows – with your support I think that’s very achievable.”

Keep fireworks in a closed box and always follow the instructions. Light them at arm’s length using a taper, and stand well back. Never go back to a lit firework. Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them. Don’t light bonfires in unsuitable weather, particularly in windy conditions. Don’t leave bonfires unattended. Build bonfires well clear of buildings, fences and hedge. Never use flammable liquids to start the fire, and never burn dangerous rubbish such as aerosols, paint, foam furniture, rubber tyres, and batteries. Police Panel Since my last article was written there have been some developments concerning the Police Panel meetings, as advised by Sgt James Hobson.

Important changes: There will be some structural changes to the policing in Peterborough due in November. Therefore for the foreseeable future the panel meetings will be put on hold. The panel meetings are likely to look quite different in the future and the format for them is still to be confirmed. They will then come under the Safer Peterborough Partnership at Bayard Place. We will still have Police, Council and will include Fire Services involvement. It is hoped that the time frame for this won’t be a long one, but this all happened quite quickly. When there is news of the Panel meetings, they should be advertised in locally. Please stay safe, report anything suspicious to 101 or use the online eCops reporting system. You can upload photos if you have any. Halloween & bonfire night will soon be upon us, so a reminder about staying and being safe, and considerate to those in the community who might not appreciate people knocking on their doors for trick or treating, as well as following the firework code. Cardea Update Greetings from Cardea, I hope everyone is enjoying the new season with its beautiful colours and crisp mornings. Stanground Chat Club Stanground Chat Club is a club for retired people that meets in Stanground at Kingfisher Court from 2-4pm every other Tuesday.

he club is a chance to meet other people and enjoy a cup of tea and has a varied programme of social activities. On 3 November the club has a speaker from Hearing Dogs for the Deaf and on 17 November there is a Christmas Craft session . This is a friendly club costing just £1 per session, where new members will always receive a warm welcome. Answer: Yes you can claim a flat rate deduction of £140, or the actual amount you have spent on specialist clothing for your job. Many employees are not aware that they could be entitled to Flat Rate Expenses. Flat rate deductions are amounts that HMRC have agreed nationally – or sometimes locally if conditions are very different – with trade unions or other bodies. irstly, our war memorial is actually inside the church. At the end of WW1 the local community decided to create a special altar carved from stone and place it at the head of the church, ‘In thankful remembrance of the Stanground men who gave their lives.’ I am pretty sure in people’s minds at that time was the sense that it was appropriate to make an altar because in church every week we remember Jesus who gave his life for us. Secondly, every year, in addition to the usual laying of poppy wreaths by community groups, there is an opportunity for anyone who wants to to come and lay their own flower, usually from their gardens or local shop. As we walk up to the altar, we can say our own ‘thank you’. Personally, as I walk I commit myself to actively seek peace at every level.

To facilitate this change, from April 2016 banks and building societies will stop automatically taking the 20% Income Tax from the interest earned on your non-ISA savings accounts. Readers who receive substantial interest on their non-ISA savings should therefore take this into account. For 2016-17 their investment income could create an increase in underpayments in their tax position as they will receive their interest gross with no tax deducted. For example, there will be those who haven’t had to pay tax to HMRC because all their income was taxed at source. These people may be required to pay their tax separately in future. Fenland Solar - making the right choice Like anything we do in life, it’s important to make the right choice, but given the newness of this industry and general lack of information about equipment, how can you be sure that you’re making the right choice when selecting a company to supply and install your PV system? Firstly a few things you should try to avoid:

The Feed in Tariff

Middlemen outfits; these are companies actively marketing and selling systems but with no accreditations, they simply take your order and then sell the installation onto another company to fit the system. In some cases clients have been left with no deposit and no system! If they’d bought from a MCS & RECC approved company this wouldn’t have happened.

The feed-in tariff was launched April 2010 and since then it’s seen a truly spectacular uptake, it’s quite simple really and works like this. If you install a PV system the government’s Feed-In Tariff scheme (FIT) means you will be paid for the electricity you generate, even if you use it yourself, and for any surplus electricity you export to the grid. And of course, you’ll also save money on your electricity bill, because you’ll be using your own electricity!

Companies offering free panels ‘buy 10 and get 2 free’. If they were free someone would have simply knocked at your door and handed you two free panels. Make sure that the deal you’re offered is completely transparent. Companies who want more than a 25% deposit. This is outside RECC guidelines and would mean that you are not protected by the consumer code. One key worry with this is that it’s a company with poor cash-flow that operates outside of the industry regulations. Companies who don’t do a proper survey on the first visit. Without a SAP calculation being performed how could you possibly know what the returns could be for your investment? Companies who don’t or can’t tell you the specifics of the panels or inverter that they are offering you.

Here are some of the main benefits you will enjoy if you have a PV system installed: * The feed-in tariff is a 20 year contract so you’ll receive payments for the next 20 years. * Payments are index linked to the Retail Price Index (RPI) and tax free! * Earn for every KWh unit of energy that your system generates (regardless of whether you use it). *

Adam Regan, Manager of Stanground Sports under 9s for 15/16 is really looking forward to the start of the coming season.

In September’s Gazette, we celebrated local youth football club Park Farm Pumas being awarded the Huntingdonshire’s FA Community award for Charter Standard Club of the year.

dam is happy to report that they have retained all the players from last season and added another 2 new signings for the coming year. “Last season was a real learning curve for the players, the parents and most of all me”, says Adam. “Going from playing regular adult football to dropping back down to the very first level of grassroots mini soccer was a real challenge, just getting some of the boys to stop tackling their own players and kick the right way was hard enough, before trying to get them to learn to play together. It was, though, a challenge I really enjoyed and am continuing to enjoy. Watching the boys develop as footballers and characters is really rewarding and I’m thankful that Duane Baker, the

Chairman got me involved. Before I joined the club I never knew how much hard work goes into a club. So manyt people behind the scenes do some really excellent work. The Development squad sessions for children aged between 4 and 7 on a Friday evening are a good way to get the youngsters involved and are excellently run by Duane Baker and Pete Bellamy, who now have about 20 years coaching experience at that age group. Also keep a look out for our fund raising events throughout the year although we run them in aid of the club all are welcome with the first being our annual Halloween party coming up next month.

She is out and about now and back at the helm. From Italy with love ... After almost 16 years selling award-winning food from his Sub Xpress premises at Serpentine Green shopping centre, owner Peter Puntrello could be forgiven for sitting back and resting on his laurels. But, as he told the Gazette, he’s not.

ike any successful business person, Peter knows that standing still in this ever changing world is simply not an option. When the Gazette spoke to Peter in October, Sub Xpress was well through a period of advancement that has seen new signage, an expanded menu and investment in new equipment to cope with a recent growth in business. Clearly having a prime spot in the food area of a busy shopping centre such as Serpentine Green has helped Sub Xpress and Peter has nothing but praise for the centre’s new manager David Waits, who took over just over a year ago.

Signage to the food court has been improved, and is constantly being reviewed and developed. With new ‘Time to Eat’ logos about to appear. B Anti-Bullying Week 16 - 20 November

ullying can affect people in different ways and in various situations; from children being bullied at school, through cyber bullying, to adults in the workplace. Being bullied can be an extremely lonely time, not least because not many people who are bullied feel able to speak out about what is happening. The National Bullying Week has been put together to help recognise bullying within the UK and highlight the problems it causes. Cyber bullying is one of the biggest forms of bullying in the UK many people feel unable to confide in someone as they feel

too embarrassed and wonder if they will be judged. Cyber bulling can affect everyday lives and is a constant source of worry and distress, with mobile technology being freely available it can be an ongoing and relentless. More needs to be done to protect people from being bullied. It is well documented that bullying can result in tragic circumstances. Many schools in the UK will be taking part in Anti Bullying Week by wearing blue on 20 November and making donations to Bullying UK, which helps raise awareness through theatrical workshops books and roadshows.

A warming spiciness with soft, moist stickiness – a winning combination. And the good news is that you can make it up to two weeks in advance to allow the flavours (and stickiness!) to develop. Ingredients: 1 large egg 75ml milk 200g butter 200g golden syrup 85g black treacle 85g muscovado sugar 100g fine or medium oatmeal 250g plain flour (ordinary or gluten-free) Method:  Pre-heat the oven to Gas 3/160°/140° Fan. Grease a deep, 9” square tin, and line with baking parchment.  Beat together the egg and the milk. In a large saucepan, melt together the butter, syrup, treacle and sugar, stirring until the sugar has dissolved completely.  Remove from the heat and stir in the oatmeal.  Place a metal sieve over the pan. Tip all the remaining dry ingredients into the sieve and sift into the pan.  Add the egg and milk mixture and stir everything together until thoroughly combined.  Using a spatula, scrape the mixture into the lined tin and bake in the oven for about 55 minutes.  Leave to cool in the tin. Place a square of baking parchment over the top of the cake to prevent it sticking, then turn out onto a double layer of kitchen foil and wrap securely. Leave for a minimum of three days and up to two weeks before eating – the longer the better! Cut into squares and eat as cake, or alternatively serve warm with custard laced with a little rum.

Method:  Mix together equal parts of clear honey and wholegrain mustard – for 2 x 454g packs of sausages you’ll need about four or five tablespoons of each. If you like a spicy kick, add a good pinch or two of chilli powder to the glaze.  Toss the cooked sausages in the mixture until evenly coated. Either pop them back into the oven for a further 5-10 minutes, turning once to ensure even browning, or finish them on a preheated griddle for a lovely chargrilled flavour. Serve with buttery baked potatoes and a crisp green salad; alternatively cut the sausages into chunks and serve on cocktail sticks as part of a finger buﬀet. Pensions and Divorce the facts We read and hear about celebrity divorces all of the time. The press is full of articles about who got the “City Apartment” or “Villa in Marbella”, but what about the less glamorous, but often more valuable asset – The Pension?

hen couples divorce, the Court must consider all of the assets, including the available pension provision. In many cases, other than the home, the biggest asset is a pension, especially if one party has worked in the public sector or has a final salary scheme pension. Quite often, one party has a greater pension provision than the other, particularly if one partner has spent time out of the workplace looking after the children. The Court has three main options in dealing with pensions upon divorce:

• Offsetting – the pension owner keeps their pension and the other retains another asset i.e. house or savings • Attachment orders – the pension remains in the name of the owner but the other “flags” a share of the pension to become payable to them when the pension owner retires • Pensions sharing orders – pension is split (not always equally) and some of the pension is transferred from that party’s pension to the other party’s pension – they are then in control of how to invest and manage the pension and when to draw the pension. Tracy Butler volunteers at Animal Helpline at Wansford with her daughter Maisie. It is a registered charity and has been running for almost thirty years.

Wansford Animal Shelter

ansford Animal Shelter rescues dogs of all breeds, some of these dogs have been handed in by their owners as they can no longer care for them but most have come from the dog pound. If Animal Helpline did not take these dogs they would be put to sleep after seven days. They help to walk the dogs and take some of them to dog shows in the hope they will find their forever home.

Animal Helpline is run by a team of dedicated volunteers and they are always looking for donations. Tracy is happy to collect any of the following items: bedding, blankets, towels, disinfectant, dog toys and leads, dog food. As a charity organisation, donations are really important. They are also in need of any prizes for a tombola stall.

Volunteers are always welcome and if you have a spare few hours to walk the dogs then please get in touch with Tracy or the home direct. Walking is great way for you to get some exercise and make a real difference to a dog’s time at the kennels. Other volunteers’ jobs involve cleaning out the kennels and bathing the dogs.

What is adaptive behaviour?

Adaptive behaviour is behaviour which is uncharacteristic for your pet and that when coupled with a change in routine or circumstance tells us that they are struggling to cope with the change. For example, a dog may soil inside the house you’ve just moved into. Indoor toileting could indicate a lack of training or a medical problem, but if they are going in a house you’ve just moved into, they may actually be trying to tell you they aren’t coping very well with the change. Other changes can be much more subtle and often misattributed to other scenarios; such as lying in odd places, being distant from other members of the household or spending extended periods away from home (cats).

Helping your pet to cope with

change

Just like people, pets have to adjust to changes in family life; such as moving house, the arrival or departure of a member of the family (two or four legged), people coming to stay for the holidays or going into kennels/catteries while the owners are on holiday. Just like us, pets cope in different ways. Some pets, however, don’t cope with these changes well and exhibit what’s called ‘adaptive behaviour’.

Below are some of the signs to look out for which may indicate your pet is struggling to cope: ␣ ␣ ␣ ␣ ␣ ␣ ␣

Changes in resting or sleeping places/patterns Actively hiding Excessive licking or vocalisation Increased or decreased social interaction House soiling Change in demeanour or posture Lack of interest in play

What to do if your pet is exhibiting adaptive behaviour ␣

Take them to see your vet. They will ask you some questions about your pet, perform a physical examination and possibly take blood and urine samples to rule out any medical causes for the behaviour you describe. They will then be able to advise you on management options based on their findings. If no physical cause is found they can then concentrate on helping your pet cope with their circumstances through behavioural advice, aids, feed supplements and/or medication. Referral to a behaviourist may also be recommended.

The UK Population is living longer!

Is age ‘just a number’? We’ve heard that turning 40 is the new 30, and 50 is the new 40 and perceptions on stages in life are definitely changing. The survey also showed that when asked what stage of life they were currently in (given choices), 55% of 60-64 year olds said ‘later life or old age’, but 43% of them said ‘middle adulthood’. For 65-69 year olds, the split was 75% ‘later life’ and 23% ‘middle adulthood’. Yet people’s ideas of when ‘later life’ started were quite early: in the 60-64 year old group, men said age 61 and women said 64; in the 6569s, men said 62 and women said 66. In September 2015, the Oﬃce of National Statistics published their UK Population Report which reinforces that the UK population is living longer. The following are some interesting facts I have taken from the report:-

Population projections ␣ The number of people aged 60 or over is expected to pass the 20 million mark by 2030 ␣ The number of people aged 65+ is projected to rise by nearly 50% (48.7%) in the next 17 years to over 16 million ␣ The proportion of people aged 65+ will rise from 17.7% currently to 23.5% in 2034 ␣ The percentage of the total population who are over 60 is predicted to rise from 23% at present to over 29% in 2035 ␣ By 2086, about one in three people in the UK will be over 60 ␣ The number of people over 85 in the UK is predicted to more than double in the next 20 years to nearly 3.5 million ␣ The population over 75 is projected to double in the next 30 years ␣ Nearly one in five people currently in the UK will live to see their 100th birthday!
