Walking for health and fun This is a new walking group for local people.

The group started on May 12 and meets every other Tuesday at the Sue Ryder Café at 11am.

Why not come along meet some new friends and enjoy keeping healthy.

Vandalism & trespassing – Ball Bridge

South Barrier Bank works progress Bank works and work on the low concrete wall has started between Stanground and Ball Bridge. At Stanground you will notice large cement lorries delivering the concrete for the wall and dumper trucks moving backwards and forwards on the site.

The bank works are progressing well from Ball Bridge working towards Stanground which will tie into the concrete wall just past the Stanground Sluice.

Security cameras have been installed within the compound at Stanground to record activities on site 24 hours per day.

Due to the close proximity of the works, and for safety reasons, the Green Wheel cycle path has been diverted until 30 November 2015. Please follow the diversion signs.

Since the Green Wheel cyclepath has been diverted there have been numerous occasions, mainly at weekends, where the site boundary fencing has been vandalised at the woods area at Stanground and Ball Bridge to gain entry through the construction site instead of using the diversion.

Construction sites are dangerous places with many hazards, which include deep excavations on this site. The contractor has considered all options when making the decision to divert the Green Wheel and there are pinch points at Ball Bridge and at the Railway Bridge where the Green Wheel is inaccessible to the public as large moving plant is in operation, which is why the diversion is in place.

The contractors only prohibit access when it is completely necessary for the safety of the community and their workers. It is understood that this may be inconvenient and the contractor will endeavour to open the cyclepath as soon as it is safe to do so. In the meantime, cyclists are urged to use the diversion route.

Local resident Lorraine Pendred has taken to Twitter about our unsightly library sign and spent time over the past few months tweeting us here at the magazine as well as the library and former council leader Marco Cereste. Her persistency has finally paid off and the missing letters shall be replaced shortly. A big thank you to Lorraine for her efforts in getting this restored back to the way it should be.

Think twice before jumping into open waterways this summer!

Would you jump into a river, lake or any other open waterway on a hot sunny day? Do you know what hazards lie beneath the water? Or how cold the water is?

Your fire service has pledged to deliver water safety education to every school in Cambridgeshire following the tragic death of a teenage boy last summer.

But there is only so much the fire service can do and they are calling on parents, carers and peers to talk each other about water safety.

Some things to remember: ■ You do not know what hazards lie beneath the surface of rivers, lakes, canals, etc.

■ Strong undercurrents can be tough to conquer, even if you know how to swim.

■ Cambridgeshire’s waterways are cold – even on the hottest days of the year – and this has a dramatic effect on your body’s ability to swim and get yourself out of trouble, should you get stuck.

■ If someone is in trouble, call 999 immediately. Do not hesitate to call the emergency services and give clear details of your location.

Stanground Chat Club

Local volunteers needed

Stanground Chat Club is a club for retired people that meets in Stanground at Kingfisher Court from 2-4pm every other Tuesday. The club offers social activities, outings and most importantly somewhere to go and enjoy a cup of tea and other people’s company.

The Salvation Army charity shop in Desborough Avenue is looking to recruit people of all ages to assist in the shop. Although no experience is necessary, till experience would be helpful.

If you could spare 3-4 hours a week it would make a huge difference.

There are many practical reasons for volunteering, which includes meeting people, gaining skills, improving your CV, etc. But the contribution you make can make a huge difference in someone else's life too. The Salvation Army works with some of the most disadvantaged people, including the homeless, elderly and those suffering from drug and alcohol addiction, as well as tackling poverty and environmental issues.

The club has a varied programme of speakers and activities booked for the coming months including speakers on subjects such as british film greats, the life and times of Sacrewell Mill, to working in Boots the Chemist in the 60s. Entertainment from Swing2Jazz and activities such as chair exercise and musical bingo. There is also the opportunity to go on a number of outings during the course of the year.

The club is very friendly and new members will always receive a warm welcome.

We are almost halfway through the year already! I hope everyone’s all set for a fun filled, and hopefully sunny, summer.

Here in Cardea we’ve been busy as our numbers grow by the day; you can’t fail to notice that the houses almost reach Farcet now, divided only by the road. It’s amazing to think that when myself and my husband first moved here we were one of just a handful of houses in a giant building site with views over the fen!

Because there were so few of us, the half a dozen or so families got together and decided to form the Cardea Residents Association (CRA) and we held a little BBQ for the Queen’s Jubilee in 2012; we all knew each other’s names and where we all lived. Boy have things changed in the short time since then! We still have the same ethos behind the CRA, even though we have so many more residents: we aim to be a group of friends and neighbours who want to build a strong community providing support for those who may need it and to hold social events to bring families together.

But this is only possible with a dedicated team of helpers, the MyCardea Facebook page is very popular with 562 members at the time of writing. The last meeting was well attended too which is very encouraging. However, in

order for us to put on events such as the Santa Float and Summer Fête we will be asking for committed volunteers to come forward, you don’t have to come to every monthly meeting just agree to be part of the organisation and running team. It’s only with your help that we can make these things happen so please come and say hello at one of our monthly meetings, or join our Facebook group, or email me …

Speaking of joining in, a group of ladies have attended a course of self-defence classes, free of charge, with the help of the CPL Trust.

Everyone has thoroughly enjoyed learning these valuable skills on Saturday mornings so I’d like to say a big thank you to Mick McMurray for his help and to St Michael’s Church School for letting us use the hall for this fantastic course.

Also a reminder that although we now have litter bins they are emptied by volunteers, led by Andy Ferris, in his spare time after work, along with a couple of others, also with full time jobs.

So if anyone could spare an hour every couple of weeks to lend a hand with this it would be much appreciated. On the same theme please, please, please can you help us try to keep the public areas litter free, especially the playing fields. There are no bins on the field but there is one opposite The Applecart. By all means have a picnic, but tidy up after yourselves as there are no caretakers or cleaners, just volunteers that attempt to keep the area clean, tidy and safe.

Charity Tea Party

Tony Vespas away in support of East Anglian Air Ambulance On Saturday 9 May, Tony Green from Peterborough completed a 1,000 mile ride around the UK on his Vespa scooter to raise funds for East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA). The aim was to complete the route in 24 hours and, despite strong winds and road closures, Tony was back home after just 19 hours.

The 1,000 mile route took Tony from Peterborough, down into Surrey, across into Wales, up as far as Edinburgh and back down to Peterborough, starting in the early hours of Saturday morning and finishing 19 hours and seven minutes later.

Tony has already raised a staggering £1,500 for EAAA, with the majority donated by local scooter clubs and motorcycle shops throughout the Peterborough area, and not without the help of his friends and other local businesses.

Tony said “I did this as a personal challenge, it’s something I’d wanted to do for a while, but I thought it was a great chance to raise money for a local charity. East Anglian Air Ambulance do a great job here in Cambridgeshire so this seemed the perfect chance to do my bit to help a critical service that any of us could need.”

Question: I’ve been told I can claim VAT bad debt relief – what is this?

Answer: A business can claim bad debt relief on a VAT return when the following conditions are met:

Exhibition and Memories of Times Past, Sat 27 June, 10am-5pm

■ The sales invoice in question is more than six months overdue for payment; ■ The invoice has been written off in the business records and accounts, i.e. the customer’s sales ledger account has been credited and a bad debt expense also created; and ■ Output tax must have been accounted for on the original sales invoice and declared and paid to HMRC on a VAT return.

■ The debt must not have been sold, factored or paid under a valid legal assignment.

Note The latest time a claim can be made is four years and six months after the later of the time of supply (usually invoice date) or due date for payment. If an invoice is written off and bad debt relief has been claimed, then output tax must be declared on any payment subsequently received from the customer.

Once upon a time there used to be a choir at St John’s. Were you part of it? For one day only there will be again! Come and rehearse on Saturday afternoon at 3pm and then sing in the service on Sunday morning. This is open to all singers of all standards.

HMRC have historically said that they would allow trivial benefits for employees (which includes limited company directors), such as a Christmas hamper, or flowers on the occasion of a wedding, etc., however the Finance Bill 2015 includes a new statutory exemption for trivial benefits from 6 April 2015. This means that benefits may be provided to an employee, or a member of the employee’s family or household if certain conditions are met.

So HMRC effectively seem to be allowing limited company directors a £50 gift which your limited company may pay for on your behalf, and/or for your employees, which will be allowable in the accounts, attracting corporation tax relief at 20% (so a £10 saving on a £50 gift).

In the Budget 2015 announcements made on 18 March 2015, this was further extended to allow an annual £300 cap. So now HMRC seem to be allowing limited company directors to make six gifts of up to £50 per gift throughout the year. The corporation tax savings of this will be up to £60, so effectively buy five gifts get one free!

Stanground Academy hosts Tri-Golf Festival for primary aged pupils On Monday 27 April, over 280 primary pupils participated in a Tri-Golf Festival hosted by the Stanground Academy.

Celebrating at Stanground St John’s Primary School Pupils and staff at Stanground St John’s Primary School are celebrating the result of a recent Ofsted Inspection.

Inspectors visited the school in April and graded the school as ‘Good’ in all aspects. In a summary of their findings, Ofsted said that, ‘Leaders are improving the quality of teaching and raising attainment. They have created a very positive atmosphere in which all pupils behave well and are keen to learn.’ They went on to say, ‘Teachers know the pupils well and have high expectations of them. As a result, pupils work hard and take pride in their work’.

The school is now part of the Diocese of Ely Multi-Academy Trust, after converting to Academy status in November 2013.

Headteacher, Sally Williams, said, “I am delighted that all the hard work that is going on in our happy school has been recognised.

We shall carry on ensuring that our children receive an excellent education.”

The Year 4 pupils were able to use Tri-Golf equipment to complete a series of 10 challenges including pitching practice, putting practice and aiming at targets. In addition, there were various pitch and putt holes of varying difficulty to really challenge them and provide the competitive element to pitch and putt in the least amount of shots. Either as a team or individually, they had to pitch and putt using the least amount of shots while not landing in the water or bunker obstacles.

Oakdale Primary had an exciting moment as David scored a hole-in-one whilst competing and therefore winning the pitch and putt on challenge 10. Challenge two was jointly won

by Gunthorpe Primary and Folksworth CofE Primary, with participants putting in three shots. Southfields Primary and Old Fletton

Primary were joint winners of station six after their participants putted in two shots.

Finally, station nine was jointly won by Southfields Primary after participants holed the ball in only three shots.

Over 40 young leaders from the Stanground Academy were on hand to assist with small groups participating in the challenges. They were able to ensure safety measures were followed, encourage and provide hints and tips on how to improve, while overseen by the Sports Partnership coaches.

CLEANING TIPS

FROM OUR VERY OWN ‘QUEEN OF CLEAN’.

Cleaning your home should be fun! There might also be more to it than meets the eye. Put some vigour in and it becomes a great workout. If you are right-handed, try using your left hand, as this will not only burn more calories, it will also challenge your brain! When you are feeling down, try a bit of cleaning. Straightening out the physical aspects of your life can sometimes help to calm the rest. There are also many tried and tested solutions that you might not know about to help make things easier.

Here are some of my favourite tips for you to try out as you get started . . .

To liven up old towels, and really bring the ‘bounce’ back into them, try washing them with baking soda and vinegar. They will feel like new!

An effective and organic solution to built up oven grime, try wiping down when the oven is still slightly warm. For your hob use a touch of white spirit to dissolve the build up of grease. Then for the perfect shine … buff with baby oil!

If your child’s plastic toys have become particularly dirty, pop them in the dishwasher for a thorough clean.

If your dishwasher needs a clean, just place a pot of vinegar on the top shelf and then wash on the hottest cycle. This will kill mildew and fungus.

One for the ladies; to keep your make-up brushes clean, and remove all unwanted make-up, swirl them in a teaspoon of olive oil and dishwashing liquid mixture. You won’t believe the difference!

The Golden Lion The Golden Lion has once again closed its doors and ceased trading. Locals gave it a good send off with a St George’s Day farewell party.

The Woolpack The Woolpack are holding a charity tea party on Thursday 18 June from 3pm for the East Anglian Air Ambulance’s 15th anniversary! Please come along and support this worthwhile cause. (See also page 8) It will be running from 3-6 pm, with lots of cakes to buy – to either eat with tea, coffee or hot chocolate or to take home for later. There will be a raffle and bingo with a variety of prizes to win.

Remember that The Woolpack has an extensive garden to take advantage of any sunshine which comes our way! Moorings are at the bottom of the garden – so you could arrive by boat.

Divorce costs often hit the headlines when we learn that multi-millionaires have spent huge amounts on their divorce. But in reality the ‘average’ divorce costs much less and there are ways to keep the costs down.

This is the perfect moreish summer recipe for a glorious day!

Method Cook the glass noodles in a pan of boiling water. Drain and put to one side. Add a splash of oil if they begin to stick together.

Blitz together the ingredients for the dressing until smooth.

Heat a wok and melt the coconut oil. Then add the garlic, red onion and red pepper and fry over a high heat for 3-5 minutes. Add the prawns and cook for a further 2 minutes until just turning pink. Add the dressing and fry again for 2 minutes.

Take off the heat and stir through the kale and noodles. Sprinkle with the peanuts, chilli and picked coriander and serve.

Rhubarb Fayre

Residents who have lived in Farcet for some years may remember the traditional Rhubarb Fayres that took place in the village. Now it’s back!

On 13 June we intend to bring this event back, bigger and better than ever before!

The Fayre kicks off with a parade around the village starting from the Village Club at 1.30pm. All residents, friends and families are invited to the Rhubarb Fayre along with all local businesses and organisations.

The parade will be led by a Rhubarb King and Queen, chosen by children from our school, and the rest of the children are invited to join the parade dressed as Rhubarb Princes and Princesses (dressing up is optional).

Local organisations will also be joining in. Everyone is welcome – the more, the merrier!

Teaching your dog to come back When re-calling your dog, use an upbeat, happy tone.

If recall is particularly bad then call with arms wide as though you are going to embrace him in a hug or turn round and run away. Dogs love a game of chase!

ALWAYS reward your dog with treats or a game. Your dog should associate coming back to you with fun, games and treats!

Until he has a reliable re-call, use a long outdoor training line, these can be as long as 150ft! Always attach these to a harness and never the collar.

Throughout his walk, put his lead on at random times. After a few seconds, remove it and let him play. You don’t want him to associate the lead with end of play and home time.

What you must never do Never punish your dog for not coming back to you straight away, no matter how long it has taken him! Your dog will not understand that you are telling him off for not coming back quickly. What he WILL learn, is that you have just told him off for doing exactly what you asked him to do (eventually). This will cause him confusion and he may become fearful of you because you are punishing him, he will then try to avoid you.

Just like humans, pets teeth need regular care and attention to keep them healthy, so we thought we’d talk a little bit about pet dental care to help you keep your pets teeth in tip top condition.

Which pets suffer with dental problems?

Smaller breeds of dogs are more prone to require dental assistance in the form of veterinary cleaning than larger breeds due to their small, close together teeth. This also makes cats equally likely to need a little bit of expert help every now and again.

However, any pet with teeth can have dental issues regardless of size or breed. The good news though is that nowadays we can do lots of things to encourage healthy teeth and gums for our pet cats, dogs, rabbits and even other small furries.

Brushing Your Pets Teeth If your pet will let you, daily brushing is the best way to prevent dental disease.

Some pets will quite happily tolerate having their teeth brushed regularly, especially if it has been introduced when they are young, however many are not so compliant.

Food, Treats & Toys If your pet experiences dental problems your Vets will be able to recommend suitable diets with specific teeth cleaning properties to help reduce the need for repeat treatment.

Provide toys with a variety of different textures and discourage the chewing of wood and sticks as this can cause damage to gums.

Smelly Breath Bad breath in pets is often caused by the bad smelling bacteria that comes with gum disease, although it can also be an indicator of abscesses or kidney problems. Whilst there are products that will help mask the smell, to truly resolve the issue you should visit your Vets to find out what the underlying issue is and how to resolve it.

Behaviour Toothache is a painful thing regardless of species, however without the evidence of a broken tooth or smelly breath, it is difficult for pets to tell us that this is the issue. Gum disease is equally painful and can lead to tooth loss.

If your pet goes off their food or exhibits behaviour that is not normal for them, such as being antisocial or aggressive, it may be that they are experiencing pain and a trip to the Vets for further investigation of possible causes is required.

Scale & Polish Plaque is both the cause of gum disease and reason for tartar build up. Once these are present the only way to get rid of them is for pets to have a scale and polish under general anaesthetic. This is a minor procedure with pets returning home the same day.

Beware Romance Scams

Dating or romance fraud occurs when an individual believes they’ve met their perfect partner online - but they aren’t who they say they are. Once personal trust has been gained, they ask for money for a variety of emotive reasons. Both men and women are victims of this type of fraud, with the age group 40-65 appearing to be most affected.

Fraudsters target the vulnerable, single, widowed, divorced; locating them using personal information uploaded on dating or social media sites. Contact is received from someone who shows an interest in pursuing a relationship. They may say they are working overseas (perhaps they are in the armed forces or working as an engineer/other professional). Gradually, a long-distance relationship is developed via email, instant messaging, texting and phone calls. The love interest may send their photograph and start using a pet name. Once the fraudsters are confident they have an individual’s sympathy and desire, they will share a problem they are experiencing and ask for help in the form of sending money to them (this could be to a UK address or one overseas). They may say they are desperate to come and visit, but need money to pay for travel costs as they have a problem in the country where they are working or an issue with access to funds.

Money grams are one of their preferred payment methods.

The real truth is that this individual has been targeted by criminals, probably based overseas,. The user profiles they have set up are fake and the pictures received are most likely to have simply been taken from other websites.

Where the warning signs of the above described situation appear, or it just doesn’t feel right – trust personal instinct.

If a stranger makes an approach via social networking sites or chat rooms and then wants to continue the communication by email or messenger – do not reply. Safeguard personal privacy through keeping personal bank account details completely confidential.

Under no circumstances should money be sent, regardless of the nature of their problem.

Helen O’Driscoll, local Police Crime Reduction Officer advises “nationally this type of

fraud is a huge problem and here in Peterborough we are certainly seeing an increase in the number of victims. Many people are too embarrassed to report to the Police, but I would encourage anyone who suspects they have been a victim of this type of offence to come forward as soon as possible”.
