The YMCA and Nene Park are joining forces to promote mental wellbeing with an event being held on 13 August. It is 80 years since the Broadway Theatre first opened its doors in 1937 as Peterborough’s first purpose-built cinema – the Odeon. And the City can now celebrate the beginning of a new era for this landmark as it reopens on 1 September promising a range of music acts, shows, plays and other entertainments and bringing positive, memorable occasions and nights out to those who would otherwise have to travel furrther afield. YMCA and Nene Park Trust join forces to promote the importance of mental wellbeing YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough has announced a new event for the whole family in partnership with Nene Park Trust – WalkEasy 2017.
T
aking place on Sunday 13 August in Ferry Meadows, the fundraising challenge aims to increase awareness of the benefits that physical exercise can have on our health, taking small steps to make a big difference to the lives of young people in our community. The event will take place from 8am-8pm and involves walking as many laps as possible around a set course at Ferry Meadows within that 12 hour timeframe. Groups of families or friends are invited to participate and the course will include various challenges and activities along the route. To take part, sign up here: https://theymca.org. uk/walk-easy-2017-peterborough/. Entry for adults is £15, under 16s £5 and under 5s go free. On top of entry costs, YMCA is also encouraging participants to fundraise money themselves. All funds raised from the event will be shared jointly between YMCA for the provision of mental health services for young people in schools and Nene Park Trust to maintain Ferry Meadows and conserve greenspace for the local community to enjoy. YMCA believes that every young person that they support, who may be facing a tough time, is a
hero for pursuing the extensive challenges of their life. As a result, the event will have a special hero theme with participants invited to dress up as their own hero to complete the route. Jonathan Martin, CEO at YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough, commented: “We are delighted to be able to run this event at Ferry Meadows; it is a beautiful location with lots of exciting opportunities available for families to make the most of. The challenge is the perfect chance for people to spend quality time with friends and family whilst enjoying the green space our city has to offer.” Matthew Bradbury, Chief Executive at Nene Park Trust, added: “We are very excited to be working with YMCA for such a worthwhile cause. As a Trust, we recognise just how much spending time outdoors can benefit people’s health and wellbeing, and we hope this event will encourage young people and families to explore their local greenspace more often.” YMCA has supported thousands of young people and families within the community for 160 years. The charity works with individuals to build better futures, offering a range of programmes
including health and fitness interventions and mental health counselling. 50% of the money raised from WalkEasy will go towards providing mental health support in schools. One in four young people suffer from a mental health illness, with counselling being one of the most effective forms of therapy in the UK for young people. Consequently, the YMCA believes that schools should be provided with counselling services that allow young people to talk about their challenges and seek support. Nene Park Trust is the registered charity which looks after Nene Park. As a charity, the Trust relies on fundraising and donations to help develop and improve their 1,725 acres of parkland across Peterborough. They are supporting the challenge to encourage young people and families to explore the Park and see the benefits of visitor’s health and wellbeing by visiting. As a result of the event, 50% of the money raised will be used by the Trust to manage local areas to ensure that the community can benefit from the greenspaces that they provide.

Selling Part Of Your Garden?
The demand for new homes is greater than ever and many homeowners with large gardens consider selling part of their garden to property developers or building a house themselves. We are often asked about the tax implications of this... When you sell your only or main home any profit on the sale is generally exempt from Capital Gains Tax as a result of Principal Private Residence relief (PPR). Your ‘home’ includes your garden and grounds so long as the land is used and enjoyed as part of your main residence whilst you live there. It is possible to claim PPR if you sell just part of the property, for example part of the garden. The relief automatically applies to properties of up to 1.2 acres (0.5 hectares) in total. It is also possible to claim the relief if your plot is bigger than this, as long as the extra space is required for the reasonable enjoyment of the house. However, if you have a larger plot, HM Revenue & Customs may argue that the sale of part demonstrates the land sold was not required for the reasonable enjoyment of the property, and so seek to deny the relief. To ensure any relief is available, the land should clearly be part of the gardens or grounds and used as such until the date of sale, so it should not be separated or fenced off from the area you are going to retain. We would also recommend you keep evidence of the area being sold was used as an integral part of your garden (for example taking photographs of the garden in use). Obtaining planning permission to develop part of your garden will not automatically prevent PPR being available and this may make the land more valuable. But at the same time, please be aware that if you purchased the property with a view to realising a profit on the sale of some or all of it, PPR will not be available. Likewise if you decided to build the new house on your land and sell the completed property this could be viewed as a trading activity, meaning at least part of the profit realised is subject to Income Tax and not Capital Gains Tax. On a positive note, if you are able to claim PPR on a sale of part of your garden, this could result in the gain realised being tax free. Given the potential tax savings, if you are thinking of selling part of your garden we would recommend getting professional advice or talk to us as early as possible to ensure any necessary tax planning steps can be taken.

THE CAVALRY
The balmy weather of July sees plants spurting with growth in the garden provided of course there is enough water about. It is also the time of year when the aphids make their presence known
G
reenfly descend on roses and virtually every other plant imaginable whilst blackfly love nasturtiums and broad beans. But it is not a time for despair for in the well balanced garden it is also time for the cavalry as ladybirds and lacewings flood in to control these sap sucking pests. There are 46 species of Ladybird found in the UK roughly half of which resemble the typical ladybird recognisable from the eponymous books. A few of the ladybirds can be identified by counting their spots such as the relatively common 2-spot and 7-spot. Perhaps most common now in our gardens is the US import the Harlequin ladybird, it too devours aphids and is generally larger than the British natives. The ladybird larvae are even more avaricious in their aphid consumption and appear more threatening to the human eye, the Harlequin even having spines down its body. There are 43 species of lacewing found in the UK broadly divided into brown and green variants, often described as looking like fairies due to their delicate bodies and finely latticed wings. Like the ladybird both adult and larvae feast on aphids.
TWO SIMPLE STEPS Obviously the ideal is to increase the numbers of these beneficial insects in our gardens and there are two simple steps to doing this. q Avoid using pesticides as these kill our friends the ladybirds and lacewings as well as the aphids, if things get out of control try spraying the plants with washing up water which causes the aphids to lose their grip on your plant without endangering the predators. w Create safe places for both to overwinter, many garden centres sell lacewings and ladybird homes generally slatted structures or upward facing holes. A good alternative is to cut both ends off a 2 litre plastic drinks bottle and fill the centre with rolled up corrugated cardboard. A free winter shelter for these useful bugs if hung up in a sheltered spot.

St Mary's, Farcet Patronal Festival Weekend 8 – 10 September This year St Mary’s Church Farcet wishes to donate all the proceeds from their Patronal Festival weekend (8 - 10 September) to the Motor Neurone Disease Association to acknowledge the huge contribution given to St Mary’s, and many people in Farcet village, by Maureen Beeby who was sadly diagnosed with this disease earlier this year. Maureen has spent her whole life in Farcet and has been a member of several society’s within the village and also St Mary’s Church where she was recently both the Verger and a Churchwarden until ill health forced her to give up these activities which she loved. She is a much loved member of the Church and the Village and has given unstintingly of herself – albeit in a very quiet way. She just got on with things. The whole of St Mary’s feels that this would be a fitting recognition of Maureen’s devotion to both the church, the village and its people.” We are keen to raise as much as possible for this little known, incurable disease. So please support our events and help us to raise as much as we can for this very worthy cause. On Friday 8 September there is a concert at 7pm in St Mary’s Church, with the Yaxley Singers. Tickets are £5 and include wine and cheese. On Saturday 9 September 10am – 4pm in the Church, there will be various stalls; tea/coffee/cakes etc and a Grand Draw which will take place at 4pm On Sunday morning at our 10.30am Service of Holy Communion, our guest preacher is Rev. Peter Wood and on Sunday afternoon at 4pm there will be Sung Evensong with tea and cake after the service.

Baby communication course set to return! Together for Families is a project managed by Spurgeons children’s charity and funded by the Diocese of Peterborough. Working alongside her Children’s Centre colleagues, Ruth Filsak is the Together for Families worker in Peterborough and she has just run a successful course at Stanground Baptist Church for local parents and their babies. The 8 week Elklan course is aimed at babies from 3-12 months and covers topics such as Let’s Look, Let’s Feel, Let’s make a Noise and Let’s Splash. It uses lots of practical ideas and activities for improving a baby’s communication skills and parents’ own understanding of how to communicate with their baby. Parents have commented on their favourite sessions being the sensory, messy and water play: one of these involved the babies sitting in and exploring rice-pops and jelly, which they loved! They have praised the course as a way of meeting new mums and babies, for giving them new ideas to try at home and for helping them as parents to communicate better with their child: “I have really enjoyed this and will tell other mums about it”, “We have enjoyed coming each week and have learnt so much”, “Great small group; made learning so much fun!” Ruth is hoping to run the FREE course again between September and October, either on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning, from 10-11:30 (this includes a coffee/tea and chat time).

Walking for Health Stanground Walks We have continued walking throughout the year and our numbers continue to increase. We now have 70 walkers registered, and we use our two walks on Tuesdays and Fridays.
T
hey are approximately 4 1/2 miles each, the River walk takes one hour and 20 minutes and the Farcet walk takes one hour and 25 minutes to complete. There is also a shorter route for those who have just starting coming on the walks which is about 21/2 to 3 miles long as an introduction, if you wish to use it, before moving into the other two groups. The age group of the walkers is between 50 – 80 years old. The walk is open to everyone over the age of 18, regardless of their level of fitness. Mums with their children and walkers with dogs are also welcome, the parents or owners are responsible for who they bring with them. We meet at the Sue Ryder Cafe on Whittlesey Way which is the start and finish point of our walks. Arriving for the off at about 10 minutes before the start time to complete new walker registration forms, the walk nominal rolls and
the walk briefing, before commencing the walk at 11am on Tuesdays and 10:30am on Fridays. Which one we do is dependent on the weather conditions and who is walking on the day. Once we arrive back at the Cafe we all have a quick chat and then retire for some sustenance, where we are well looked after. It is our intention to continue walking throughout the year and most who regularly attend are keen to do so. If the weather is particularly inclement, then we just go for a coffee and a chat. Please come along and join us it is great fun and a good way to make new friends. Look forward to seeing you. Stanground WI South Nene WI has been up and running since February this year and meets in the community room of the Heron Public House in Stanground, on the first Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm. We have had some great evenings so far supported by members and guests. Our evenings have included a chocolate tasting and quiz night, a visit from Jason Middleton who brought along a selection of gemstones to talk about. We have also had a visit form the Cambridgeshire Bobby scheme who spoke about keeping safe and our most recent visit was from Nicola at Daisy Chain Florists who came and demonstrated flower arranging and spoke about her wedding and event dressing business. As you can see we have been really busy so far and still have some more exciting and interesting evenings planned. New members and guests always welcome. PLANET B in Peterborough Peterborough is home to one of the longest running and largest Green Festivals in the UK, and this year it takes on a new life as ‘Planet B’. adaptable, what lifestyles and habits we need to change, and how we can learn from the past, Planet B will include an environmental conference, film screenings, debates, theatre and much more, meaning there will be plenty of activities for residents to get involved with! “We want Planet B to be both relevant locally to Peterborough, but also to engage with wider contemporary environmental thinking and developments,” explains PECT’s Karen Igho. “It is challenging to consider alternative ways of living to what has become the norm but the process of questioning these and considering what would lead to a fair and respectful global community is what the focus of 'Planet B' is.”
We want Planet B to be both relevant locally to Peterborough, but also to engage with wider contemporary environmental thinking and developments.

lanet B encompasses a twoweek programme of events, performances, film screenings, workshops, commissioned artworks, and a conference – all around encouraging discussion and debate on sustainability. The environmental charity PECT, working alongside arts organisation Metal and The Green Backyard and with funding from Arts Council England, will be running Planet B until Saturday 12th August 2017. The environment is a huge subject that can often feel hard to get to grips with, but Planet B is asking: ‘What needs to happen for people to understand the issues, become more resilient together and take positive actions?’ Looking at the key themes of how communities can become more

UROCK Theatre Company comes to the Undercroft in Hampton UROCK in partnership with Eastern Angles have set up brand new drama and theatre classes for children and young people, delivering creative learning.
N
ationally recognised youth arts provider UROCK Theatre Company, has won grant funding from Arts Council England, which will allow it to relocate to the Undercroft in Hampton for a year, and work closely in partnership with Eastern Angles Theatre Company, who are currently producing exciting theatre in Peterborough: The Trials of Mary (14-16 July) and All Wrapped up In Westwood (26 October 5 November) Directed by Poppy Rowley who will also work as Artist Associate of UROCK. In September, two brand new classes/groups will start, and the local primary schools will take part in a creative project in which young children will get a taste of live theatre experience, starting with learning the vocabulary of devising and appreciating performance work, and culminating in a visit in December to Lamphouse Theatre’s production of Peter Pan. UROCK Theatre Company has previously
been based in Fulbridge Academy and have been very grateful for their support as this has allowed it to develop the quality of its youth theatre, centring on a unique ethos, and tackling a range of work, which enables every member to make real progression. Over the past 3 years it has twice been invited to perform at the National Theatre as part of the Connections Festival, and several of its alumni have gone on to successful careers in the creative industries. In September a new class entitled UROCKERS will allow children age 9+ to take part in imagined and improvised theatre. Friday evenings between 4.30 and 5.30pm in the Undercroft. This class will be fun and relaxed, with small numbers, suitable for those with some experience, but more importantly for those with no experience at all. Also, the UROCK Theatre Company are recruiting new members to join. Here anyone over
the age of 14 is welcome, and the Company will work on Saturdays, between 10.00 and 1.00, starting work on 2 new productions where students can be cast in both: A new and original youth community performance in response to The Eastern Angles “All Wrapped up In Westwood” production Directed by Poppy Rowley November 2017, which will involve research & response. UROCK Company will also participate in National Theatre Connections 2018 New writing production in February 2018 Directed by Di Goldsmith. A
great excuse for a spot of alfresco dining with family and friends, the popular social gathering offers the chance for the fellas to show off their grill skills, the ladies to rustle up a tasty summer punch and the kids to have endless fun. With commentary of the weekend sporting events providing a summery background, what’s not to love? Sadly, some BBQ bashes are spoiled through accidents that occur in the garden each year. Last time figures were collected through the Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance System (HASS/LASS) in 2002, an estimated 1,800 people visited A&E in the UK having had an accident involving a barbecue. The most common types of barbecue-related accidents as shown by the HASS/LASS figures were: Burn/scald/other injury related to fire or flame - 800. Cut/tear by sharp edges - 200.
The vast majority of barbecue accidents (1,400) happened in a home setting. Some of the accidents lead to very serious burns, usually as a result of using an accelerant such as petrol to light the fuel. However, planning ahead and following some simple safety tips will ensure you BBQ is fun-filled and not a flaming failure. Keep your barbecues away from flammable garden furniture such as wooden or plastic chairs. Move your barbecue away from sheds, fences, overhanging branches and foliage and never light it in an enclosed space. Never leave a barbecue unattended. Never let children too close to the barbecue. Use only recognised firelighters or starter fuels on charcoal barbecues. If you’re a gas barbecue user, ensure the tap is off before changing the cylinder. When choosing a barbecue, stability is essential - ensure the one you choose is strong and sturdy Check your barbecue is in good condition (particularly if you have not used it for some time) and look for loose or damaged parts that may need adjustment or repair, Wishing you all a very happy, healthy, fun and above all – safe – BBQ season.

Barnwell Country Park is a great place for a family day out. Located in the heart of the Nene Valley, close to the historic market town of Oundle, there are 15 hectares of lakes, riverbank and meadows to explore. With 3 way marked waterside trails, numerous picnic spots, a wealth of wildlife and facilities, there is something to entertain people of all ages. There are circular, way marked and hard surfaced trails through woodlands and meadows or by rivers and lakes, a brass rubbing trail, and an orienteering trail to follow, with packs available from the Visitor Centre. You can also get duck food from the centre, which is much better for the ducks on the pond (and the water)! There is a wildlife garden behind the centre, where you can learn how to help the wildlife in your own garden too.
