Walking a brave walk to help grandad Tarannum is a six year old girl from Hampton, whose parents, Vikash and Madhurita Jayaswal are originally, from Kolkata (India) and have lived in the UK for the last ten years.

U

nfortunately, Tarannum’s grandfather has been diagnosed with dementia and she is terrified by the fact that the person, whom she loves the most, won’t be able to recognise her one day. Around 225,000 people develop dementia every year – that’s the equivalent to one person every three minutes. With this in mind, Tarannum made the brave decision to participate in the 10km Memory Walk in Peterborough, and successfully completed it. It is her firm belief that it will make her ‘Dadu’ and those hundreds and thousands of people who suffer from alzheimer’s/dementia get better. She trained hard every day after school, starting from 2kms and then increasing it, little by little, every day. She also used to go up and down the tump in Hampton around 20 to 50 times. A sum of over £1,679 has already been raised and she is hoping to raise at least £2000. After speaking to the officials present at the walking site, it was found that Tarannum was definitely one of the youngest (if not the youngest) to actually physically walk the full 10km. Also, whilst the official figures will come out in next couple of months, they have indicated that Tarannum might have raised the highest amount for the charity (last year the total money raised was £15k).

The Hampton Seniors Social Club This month, the Seniors have been busy on the Vale Allotments, erecting a new shed so that they can take shelter from the rain and a well earned rest from weeding, planting and tidying.

T

hey are looking forward to next spring when the planting starts again, and have a small camping stove to make tea and bacon sandwiches, with chairs to relax on, because it’s not all work! The club had a very special occasion this month, as Geoff and Doreen celebrated 60 years of marriage and received a congratulatiory card from the Queen. The Seniors have been to two productions at the Key Theatre this month and were planning a Pamper Day at the Regional College in preparation for Christmas. It is hoped that the children from Vale School will come again this year and sing carols for us before Christmas as it’s always a treat for the club to listen to them. If you would like to join us on that occasion you will be most welcome. Lots more information and photos are on our Facebook page, Google Hampton Over 50s forum. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all the Seniors.

Bags of help to fight heart disease Serpentine Green Shopping Centre is delighted to announce that their shoppers managed to donate over 170 bags to the British Heart Foundation (BHF) during their Bag It. Beat It. event. The donated quality items will now go on to be sold in local BHF shops to generate vital funds which will help support life-saving research.

 Hampton Health

O

erpentine Green Shopping Centre encouraged their shoppers to donate bags of unwanted items including clothes, CDs, DVDs and bric-à-brac. Every bag donated helps fund life saving heart research helping those affected from heart disease. The annual event also raises awareness of the devastating effects a sudden heart disease diagnosis can have on an entire family. David Wait, Centre Manager of Serpentine Green Shopping Centre, commented: “We are delighted with the amount of bags

that were donated during this year’s Bag It. Beat It. event and I would like to thank everyone who took the time to drop off their unwanted items. “The research that Bag It. Beat It. enables BHF to carry out is life-changing to those who are either beating heart disease or family members who are offering their continuous support, and I am delighted that we can be part of that. If you picked up a Bag It. Beat It. bag from our shopping centre but didn’t have time to drop it off, you can still donate to your local BHF shop.”

Christ the Servant King

The Parish Church of Hampton

Have you ever stood back and wondered what Christmas is all about?

I

Hampton WI Merry Christmas From Hampton WI and a big ‘thank you’ to all those who came and supported our Hampton WI Christmas Fair. We had a lovely time and we hope you did too.

s it about the food? Maybe it’s about giving and receiving gifts or how about all the extra time we get to spend with family? These are all great aspects of Christmas but how about delving deeper than the sparkly wrapping paper and the glistening baubles for a moment to consider the original meaning and purpose of Christmas. A little over 2000 years ago the birth of an ordinary looking baby boy in a dirty stable started something special. That moment divided our calendar into two halves, BC and AD. Whatever you believe about who Jesus actually was, it was one of the defining moments of world history. We believe the reason this otherwise normal birth was so world-altering is

because Jesus was someone very special. God entered into our world on a mission to save it. Christ started something back in down-town Bethlehem, and he continues to start things in people around the world today. He’s worth checking out for yourself. We love seeing many of you during the Christmas season and have various Christmas services for you to join with us at Christ the Servant King Church, your Parish Church! Please see the advertised Christmas events here in the Gazette and on our noticeboard at CSK. We’re looking forward to welcoming you and your family. A very happy Christmas to you all! Every Blessing, Sylvia

T

here’s not many sleeps to go until the big man comes down a chimney or two, but before that we have our last meeting of 2015. We have enjoyed such a brilliantly successful year. Our numbers have doubled and we have seen many guest visitors too. We’ve learnt many new crafts, some of which our members have continued to enjoy and that is the primary objective of any WI: to educate. It has also been a year where new friendships have been forged and great nights out have been enjoyed. So, if you want a slice of our WI life why not make yourself a Happy New Year’s resolution to come and say ‘hello’.

am married to Thelma and have twin daughters, one grand daughter and twin grandsons. Since moving to Hampton eight and a half years ago we have lived in two different houses in Hampton Vale. I was born in Yaxley and have spent 40 years of my working life as a farmer. When I retired from farming I became a property developer and still run a property business. One of mine and my wife’s favourite pastimes is walking. There are so many walks in this area and a hidden gem on our doorstep is Crown Lakes, to have a family walk on a cold day is a very good way to exercise. When I became a Parish Councillor my intentions were and still are to help all Hampton Residents enjoy living in this friendly safe and wonderful environment. We are lucky to have so many amenities and clubs catering for all age groups. In these difficult times financially for both City and Parish Councils I like to think that by helping sort out problems within the Parish I am helping the community and making Hampton one of the most desirable places to live in Peterborough. Recently I have been on the working group setting up and maintaining the Community Garden. We have managed to achieve a very pleasant, tranquil garden with a seat that can be used by all the locals for contemplation. There are plans to make this even more relaxing by more planting and a pergola with a seating area. This has all be made possible by O&H, Tesco’s and Dobbies with their staff helping plant and also donating the plants. Most weeks you will find me there either weeding or watering, so please come and say hello. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all Hampton residents and their families a very Happy Christmas and a Healthy and prosperous 2016.

COMMUNITY NEWS

A good read by Sarah Davey

MUST READ

CHILDREN’S BOOKS

How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss Long before Jim Carrey took the character to the big screen, this book had captured the hearts of generations of children. It's a marvellous story of seasonal redemption in the best tradition. It's every bit as timeless as Dickens' A Christmas Carol. The lonely Grinch hates Christmas; the noise, the feasting, the singing. His loathing of the festivities is focussed on the merry little Whos, who really know how to throw a Christmas party. He decides that this year he will put a stop to the proceedings and sets about wrecking their big day. Will he succeed? Well it's no secret to say that happily his plans are thwarted in the nicest way possible, as he discovers that the most important thing about Christmas is love, friendship and sense of belonging to a community. This is Seuss at his best; a riotous rhyming adventure and an adorably grumpy anti-hero.

Letters from Father Christmas by J.R.R Tolkien Mention Tolkien and you will undoubtedly think of his epic adventures - The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. But as father to four children Tolkien had a softer more whimsical side. Each December over the course of their childhood he wrote and illustrated detailed letters from Father Christmas; letters populated by a cast of characters which included elves, goblins and a clumsy polar bear. Through these letters, Tolkien entertained his children with stories of high-jinks at the North Pole. It's true the language can seem a little formal and stilted at times by today's standards, but they were written in the 1920s and 30s and Tolkien is as much a product of his time as any author. His affection for his children shines through every page regardless. As they were written for real children the reader receives an insight into what the interests of the Tolkien children might have been: prehistoric cave paintings, fireworks, the night sky and animals to name a few. All the letters are lavishly illustrated with fantastical intricate pictures, and these bring the stories to life. Even non-Tolkien fans should love this charming book. It's wonderful for reading alone in front of a roaring fire with a cup of hot chocolate, or for sharing with your own children. Perfect seasonal fare.

FEATURE

Wrapping up Christmas ... The gift of beauty 4K TV the whole picture By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

The next evoltion in picture quality ... 4K TV, also known as Ultra HD or UHD, is the next evolution in television picture quality. With a picture composed of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels more than 8 million in total - it has four times the amount of HD (high definition) sets. More pixels mean greater image clarity, finer detail, better texture and improved colour resolution. The net result is images that look incredibly lifelike and so detailed that at times they feel almost 3D – without the need for funny glasses! The first wave of 4K TVs were large – very large – with 84 inch panels and £20k price tags to match. Prices have now dropped along with screen size, and you can buy entry models for under £1,000 from all the big brands such as Samsung, Panasonic, LG and Sony. You can also pay many thousands of pounds for monster sets! Generally 4K TV screens are at least 40 inches. Some say you shouldn’t view on anything less than 55 inches. This is because the advantages of pixel-dense display diminish as the screen size shrinks. Big really is better! Similarly 4K TV is best viewed close up (ideally at a distance 1.5 x screen height), though practically most homes cannot accommodate viewing from closer than 2-3 metres. The technology for crystalclear viewing may be with us, but

10

currently there are no 4K TV channels being broadcast. The main source of 4K content is the internet, from sites such as Netflix, YouTube and Amazon Prime Instant Video, and to successfully stream you would need a consistent broadband speed of at least 15Mbps. That said, UHD TVs do a remarkable job of up-scaling HD and standard definition pictures to 4K pixel count, so ‘everyday’ viewing such as Freeview HD TV, Blu-ray movies and DVDs can be boosted to near 4K picture quality. However be warned that some models are better at doing this than others. 4K technology is still work in progress. In future, it may also extend to higher frame rates (HFR), greater contrast and wider colour spectrum. The BBC has plans to offer 4K programming by 2016 but only in a limited form and although BT and Sky are rumoured to have plans, nothing has been finalised. It will be two to three years until most video content becomes available. So, if you want the absolute best that TV has to offer and don’t mind waiting to enjoy the full benefits of your 4K TV, then go ahead and buy now. But purchase from a top tier manufacturer for the best chance of future-proofing your set and also make sure that you buy a model with two HDMI 2.0 ports.

Teens and tweens - Buying for a teen? M&S have some really cute gift sets out, including a set of mini lip glosses for £9.50. The glosses are also perfect for splitting up to add to Christmas crackers or stockings. It’s what’s outside that counts! - Let’s face it, when it comes to some members of the family, it’s often as much about the packaging as it is the product. Head to White Stuff for some gorgeously designed beauty products, including a body butter for £9.95, make-up bag for £15 and soaps for £5. Bargain hunter? - TK Maxx is always worth a rummage for beauty products. You can get your mitts on some top brands, at well below the RRP. You’ll also want to check out the bargain beauty bundles at www. halfpriceperfumes.co.uk and www.latestinbeauty.com. A touch of indulgence - The Forever Frangipani Collection by Elemis is one of those gifts that’s pretty much guaranteed to please. It’s £39.90, but includes a shower cream, body oil, body cream and body mist, that are worth more than £70 altogether. The frangipani fragrance is warm, rich and evokes the feeling of an expensive foreign holiday to a sunnier climate. Bliss. Looking to really splash out? Try Elemis’ Heritage Heroes. It’s an eye watering £225, but you do get 25 products, worth £425 altogether. Charity gifts - Green People has partnered with the Woodland Trust on a range of gift sets, including the Hand Care Collection (£15.95), Facial Care Collection (£15.95) and Men’s Collection (£19.95). Other great charity gifts on the market include Lush’s Charity Pot hand and body lotion (£6.95). For the boys - There are some great men’s gift sets out this Christmas, including the Nuxe Men Survival Kit (a bargain at £8.50) and the Elemis Perfect Man set (£49). Origins, Darphin and Lancome usually have some good male grooming sets out for Christmas too. One for your list - Finally, if you fancy adding one to your own wish list, Neal’s Yard Remedies’ Aromatherapy Bath and Massage Oil Organic Collection is definitely worth a look. Featuring six mini oils, all gorgeously scented, this is a real treat, especially if you specify that a massage needs to be included as part of the gift…

Christmas Peace By Sarah Davey Plan ahead and include plenty of ‘me time’. Spend time doing what you enjoy most. Have fun. If you’re overloaded, learn to say no in the nicest way possible! What stresses you? Be aware of your own personal triggers. Don’t ignore them, deal with them. Talk, take advice, think things through, make decisions and you’ll feel more in control. Don’t be a victim. Deal with your anger Recognise it and devise ways of politely walking away from confrontations so you can calm down, using deep breathing (in and out to the count of 5, at least 3 times) and positive thinking. Natural remedies Homeopathic and flower remedies are excellent for anxieties, as are Vitamin C and the B Vitamins. Some aromatherapy oils, especially lavender and orange are very relaxing. Enhance their effects by booking an aromatherapy massage. Exercise Regular, mild aerobic exercise, such as walking, swimming and dancing, strengthens the heart and encourages a steady flow of mood-boosting hormones.

Stressbusting tips

Which wine with what? By Kate Duggan Choosing wine can be a bit of a minefield, and it’s all too easy to get it wrong. Follow our cheat’s guide to creating the perfect match.

Don’t rush your food Try to relax when eating. No more 5 minute lunches at the desk. Eating under stress confuses your metabolism. High cortisol levels causes blood to flood the muscles rather than the intestines, which is where it should be for healthy digestion. De-tox Start the month with a gentle de-tox. Eat healthily and reduce sugar, caffeine, salt, alcohol and refined carbohydrates. You’ll lose some weight, boost your immune system, gain energy and be fit enough to ensure December is your merriest month of the year.

@Hampton Gazette @Hampton Gazette

Fish course Delicate fish dishes call for a delicate wine, such as Pinot Grigio. Rich sauces, however, require well-bodied whites like Chardonnay. Serving salty seafood? Champagne works surprisingly well. Spicy dishes You’ll want a juicy, spicy wine to complement these dishes. Look for a Malbec or Syrah. Alternatively, a dry Riesling works well with spicy veggie recipes. Juicy red meat Bring out a rich red, such as a Bordeaux or Cabernet Sauvignon. Turkey Choose a full-flavoured white, like a white Côtes du Rhône, or a delicate red, such as a Frappato. Veggie main There is a misconception that vegetarian food should only be paired with white wine. In actual fact, medium reds work well with lots of veggie dishes, particularly tomato based recipes. Cheese course There’s no easy answer here. Some cheeses go better with red, some with white. Sauternes and Stilton are a perfect match, while Chardonnay works well with brie. A dry Rosé is a good all-rounder. In general, the main rule is to pair the characteristics of the dish with the characteristics of the wine. Buttery sauces work well with buttery whites, for example. Have fun with your choices and enjoy!

WILDLIFE

The month of December is warmed by the season of Christmas and winter evergreens provide a welcome touch of green in the middle of winter. The most popular evergreen has to be the holly. It’s red berries add even greater colour to Christmas wreaths which adorn many doorways. Only the female holly, however, bears berries and these berries cannot be produced unless the make plant is nearby. These berries, as well as being attractive, are an important food source for both birds and some animals who by eating them assist in spreading the seeds.

The holly and the ivy

Lakota (Lover of Nature)

There is a wealth of folklore surrounding the holly. Apparently the number of berries produced is a sign of whether the winter will be harsh. The most well known custom is the bringing in of holly boughs into the home in winter. Originally holly was a fertility symbol and it was also thought to protect the house from witchcraft and goblins. The pagan tradition of bringing holly indoors was accepted by Christianity; the spines of the leaves symbolizing the crown of thorns and the red berries representing the blood of Christ. The plant which is partnered with the holly in the Christmas carol ‘The Holly and the Ivy’ is of course the ivy. Although it really doesn’t

14

get much of a look in as the carol praises the virtues of the holly rather than the ivy! However, like the holly it is an evergreen, and a late flowering one at that, producing berries from November to January. These berries, like the holly, provide much needed food for birds during harsh winter weather. And much like the holly ivy is often used to decorate homes, whether as a real example or as an artificial one. The folklore associated with the ivy is just as strong. Ivy was said to bear good fortune to women, and if grown on the walls of the house would ward off witchcraft. A young girl could place some leaves in her pocket and the first young man to cross her path would be her future husband. Sounds risky to me!

MONEY MATTERS by Pete Bird, Bird & Laws Certified Public Accountants

Do you have any tax or business questions? If so email Pete Bird of Bird & Laws info@birdandlaws.co.uk and if of general interest we will publish them here.

Question: I am a self employed plumber and would like to attend a refresher course to update and reinforce my skills. I am also considering attending a course to train as an electrician to expand my business. Would the costs of these courses be allowable for tax purposes and reduce my taxable profits? Answer: For training costs to be allowable, they must be incurred wholly and exclusively for the purposes of the trade. The course undertaken to update your skills in plumbing would be allowable as it is updating your skills for the trade you are currently undertaking. This cost would then be deducted from your business profits. The training costs for the electrician’s course however would not be allowable. The benefits obtained from this course gives you a new skill and as such a new specialisation within your trade. It is therefore not incurred wholly and exclusively for the purposes of your trade.

Landlords Income tax is only payable on rental profits. Owners of rental properties can claim a significant amount of tax deductible expenditure, thereby reducing their rental profits. Tax deductions can currently be claimed such as, mortgage interest, repairs, letting agent fees, insurance, a 10% wear and tear allowance, Home Office expenses, travel and subsistence costs, spending on equipment used in the business and motoring costs.

Future Landlord Tax Changes Significant changes were announced in the July 2015 Budget: The wear and tear allowance is to be abolished. From 6 April 2016 onwards, landlords will only be able to claim the actual cost of replacing furnishings.

Interest & Finance Costs In utter defiance of the basic principles under which businesses are taxed, the government has decided to restrict tax relief for interest and finance costs paid by individual landlords who own residential properties. The new rules will not apply to commercial property or furnished holiday lettings. They will also not apply to properties held inside companies. The proposal is to phase out higher-rate tax relief for interest and finance costs over a four year period commencing in 2017/18.

The perfect Christmas table

By Susan Brookes-Morris

Whether you are using new festive tableware or the dinner set you keep for special occasions, create a table to be proud of.

T

hink about your colour scheme. Are you going for sophisticated white and gold, elegant white and silver, festive red and green or something more modern such as purple and turquoise? Are there some handed down family decorations that you want to include or are you going for the fun factor? Crackers and candles are traditional but you could also include Christmas table confetti and seasonal items such as Santa shaped cruet. For many Christmas Day is one of the few times when three or more courses will be

served. If you are having soup, the spoon for this should be on the far right. A fish knife would be on the inside of the spoon with the main course knife on the inside of that and a desert knife closest to the plate. On the left side working inwards it would be the fish fork and then the main course fork. The desert spoon would be above the plate and facing left with the desert fork facing right and closest to the plate. Side plates go to the left and glasses are placed top right. Add candles or fairy lights and you’re good to go. @Hampton Gazette

SCHOOLS

Hargate Primary

Hampton Vale Primary Celebrations and commemorations have been an important part of the learning calendar at Hampton Vale Primary School over the past few weeks. A theme of Peace and Remembrance included an Armistice assembly on 11th November, during which representatives of each class presented a poppy wreath on behalf of their class before visiting musicians played The Last Post and the children joined much of the rest of the country in the two-minute silence. Reception children each made their own poppy, which they planted in their outdoor space. The Reception children have also been learning about the religious festivals of Diwali, Hannukah and Christmas; they have also been rehearsing their Nativity story to be performed to parents and carers. Year Three children have also taken to the stage with their production of “Hansel and Gretel”. Their theme learning has also included a “Chocolate Morning”, at which they learned more about different chocolates and Fairtrade and made chocolate pizzas.

Ho Ho Ho – Christmas is nearly upon us and we are busy preparing for all of our fantastic school plays. The children have been practising extremely hard and we are sure all their hard work will be reflected in their performances on the night! Thank you to everyone who attended our Friends Christmas Fayre on Friday 27th November. As always it was a fun filled afternoon with lots of Christmas cheer. In other news, we had our annual Powerdown fortnight in November. Once again the children learnt all about energy saving through a series of different lessons and activities and the week ended with an exciting afternoon of reading by torchlight in buddy groups. The children also took part in a Bling my Bike/Jacket or Scooter competition

which linked in with the “be safe be seen” safety message. And finally our fabulous new outdoor classroom is up and running and a great addition to our outdoor learning environment. The classroom has been funded through a Lottery grant and is being used across the school for some fantastic al fresco learning. Miss Porter said “We are very privileged and fortunate to have a dedicated area for our outdoor learning lessons and the children are so excited about it”.

Little Acorn Day Nursery and Pre-school We have had a busy month at little acorns; we have had lots of visitors from people who do important jobs in the community. We had a Police officer come in his police van; we explored inside the van and switched on the flashing lights. A fire engine and lots of fire fighters came; we sat inside the fire engine, and then got to squirt the big hose. A vicar came to speak to us about different things which happen in church; we got to have a turn at christening our dolls. We have also had visits

from some of children’s pets; we have seen some rabbits and tortoises. Our children have been practicing really hard for their upcoming Christmas concert and have been singing beautifully. They are all getting very excited for the Christmas party. We would like to wish all our Families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

SCHOOLS

Hampton College

Hampton College Primary Phase

The first week back at Hampton College has whizzed by and dare I say it… we are on the countdown to Christmas! There have been so many student successes it would be impossible to mention them all but HC really do have some very talented actors, singers, performers and so many incredible sportsmen and women. The PE team are super busy with lots going on: Basketball, Table Tennis, Football, Netball and Rugby just to name a few. On Friday 16 October Hampton Hargate Primary School joined some of our very talented musical students to watch them showcase their ensembles in a well-planned and rehearsed assembly. A number of students took part in the Shakespeare School Festival at The Key theatre on Monday 9 November. A huge congratulations to the 9 HC teams of Business Studies students who have successfully had loans secured from Peter Jones in the Tycoons in School competition this year. The students are gearing up to take part in the UK-wide enterprise competition launched by star of Dragons’ Den Peter Jones CBE. Other fantastic Business Studies competitions include: • Student Investor Challenge • Coca-Cola Real Business Challenge • BASE Competition • Another successful School Quiz Night There has also been lots of activity amongst the Student Council with student elections for Chair and Vice Chair – we will keep you updated of their work.

The Autumn term has got off to a flying start as we have embraced our new Cornerstone Curriculum, with a series of planned visits and visitors. We started off the term with the unlikely visit to school from a tarantula, some snakes, owls and even a mongoose. The children loved having the opportunity to hold and stroke these exotic animals, although many of the adults did not appear to be quite so brave! Handling these creatures paved the way for some amazing writing which the children have loved learning to do. As well as welcoming visitors into school we have also enjoyed climbing aboard a coach and making our way to Kenilworth castle. Here the children developed a deeper understanding of history, through practical enquiry, exploring the ruins of the impressive building. The children have since designed their own historic buildings and have had to work collaboratively to then make them, some children have enjoyed

the topic so much they have roped their parents into helping make phenomenal constructions at home to take in to school and share with their friends. The children in Foundation have had their first soup kitchen; having read the story of Pumpkin Soup they worked together to peel, slice, cook and stir their own vegetables to make soup, and then invited their families into to have a yummy taste. We do so enjoy it when the big students come down to work with us, and we are delighted to have Primary Readers up and running, allowing for a fantastic paired reading experience coupling older pupils with younger ones to share good quality texts. We are now in the throes of starting to think about learning lots of festive songs, learning lots of lines for plays and getting out the glitter and glue, ready for the most wonderful time of the year.

Hampton Tiddlers Hampton Tiddlers had their Halloween Party on 29th October, 50 adults and children attended. It was a great party with fancy dresses, dancing with disco lights, fog machine blowing fog, bubbles, making bats, decorating skeleton biscuits, healthy snacks.

Your guide to

Living in Hampton

The time has come to deck the halls and soak in festive lights. With the New Year almost in sight, we thought we’d take a moment to reflect on the past year and raise a glass to what’s next in store for Hampton.

Ringing in the changes with O&H Hampton

E

Hampton’s backbone

Reviving a tradition

At home with nature

Hampton’s first major road alteration of the year was completed very quickly this autumn. With the road’s recent re-opening, motorists are now enjoying improved access to and from Hampton Vale via Nature’s Way onto the Parkway. Over in Hamptons East, you may also have noticed that the structural works around Teardrop Lake, including jetties which will be used for sailing and other water sports, are already in progress. An update on this is expected early in 2016.

Since becoming a founding member of Natural Cambridgeshire in March, O&H Hampton has been co-developing a toolkit for other housing and commercial developers and local authorities. This will contain information on best practices aimed at effectively integrating the natural environment within housing development projects to maximise investments. Other notable successes include the 40% population increase of the protected great crested newt and the specially created field for the scarce black-headed mason wasp - now classed as one of the UK’s most northerly locations for the species.

July’s issue of the Gazette covered the results of O&H’s most recent residents’ survey. Despite identifying some areas for improvement, the majority of local respondents cited numerous features that they love about the Hamptons. Overall, the vote of confidence for the great lifestyle choices offered here was virtually unanimous. In fact, while four out of five said they’d recommend Hampton to others looking for somewhere to live, almost two thirds were also clear they would consider moving within Hampton themselves.

July also saw the welcome return of the traditional information sessions, as 80 people came along to the college to hear first-hand about O&H’s plans for Hamptons East. O&H’s Roger Tallowin explained how the area will create greater lifestyle choices to benefit people as their needs and circumstances change. Construction plans for the new Hampton Gardens Secondary school topped the agenda, as Roger explained how it will serve the needs of Hamptons East and the Yaxley area from September 2017. The evening was filled with lively discussion and debate, as representatives from other local organisations as well as the college, parish council and local constabulary took part in speaking about a wide range of matters of local interest.

arly in the year, O&H Hampton revealed major development plans for land east of the A15. Continuing to provide a home for nature right at the heart of life in Hampton, Gazette readers got to find out how four new villages - Hampton Beach, Hampton Gardens, Hampton Woods and Hampton Water – are to be developed on 90 hectares of land, set in 185 hectares of parks and lakeland. And from that point on, Hampton’s success stories for the natural environment kept on coming.

What you had to say

So as we get ready to say hello to another busy year, on behalf of O&H we’d like to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

If you have an idea for a subject you’d like to see featured here let us know by email at info@hamptongazette.co.uk @Hampton @Hampton Gazette Gazette

/Hampton Gazette

Still to come Looking ahead, there are many exciting plans afoot and some key milestones are already mounting in Hamptons East. A national builder for example, is putting in planning for 790 new homes and Carillion has been contracted to start work on the new secondary school in January 2016.

FOOD AND DRINK

It is probably the biggest meal you will cook all year, but relax, our Christmas dinner countdown reduces everything down to manageable chunks.

COUNTDOWN TO

Early December

Order your turkey or buy a frozen one now. To work out what size you need, count on serving 450g per person. A frozen turkey will need 4–5 days to thaw. Make and freeze your mince pies. Think about the tabletop decorations if you’re planning something special.

One week before Christmas

Start to defrost the turkey at the back of the fridge. Write your shopping list and purchase all non-perishables (don’t forget pet food). Buy milk in cartons and freeze in case of emergency.

Two days before Christmas

Make cranberry sauce and store in the fridge. For stuffings and bread sauce, you will need stale bread. Cut and cube it now and lay it out on a baking tray in a single layer. Make sure all napkins and tablecloths are washed and ironed. Wash or polish cutlery, glasses, serving dishes and china. Pick up the flowers you ordered for the table. Arrange flowers and water well. If possible, wait until Christmas Eve to buy vegetables, salads and fish. If not, buy them now.

Christmas Eve morning

Pick up fresh turkey. Do last minute shopping. Prepare turkey gravy. Defrost mince pies. Prepare your chosen pudding and refrigerate. If you’re serving a traditional pudding, make brandy butter and refrigerate.

Christmas Eve afternoon

Prepare stuffings. Don’t refrigerate, but leave covered in a cool place. The stuffings should not be too cold when you stuff the turkey. Prepare the vegetables. Peel potatoes and put in cold water in the fridge. Prepare other vegetables and store in plastic bags in the fridge. Make bread sauce. Cover tightly with cling film and store in the fridge. Set the table, leaving the flowers until the morning.

Christmas Eve evening

Take the turkey out of the fridge, cover with foil and allow it to come to room temperature. Do the same with the stuffing and butter so that it softens for the morning. With all the newly created space, fill up the fridge with wines, mineral water and fresh juice

NEW YEAR’S EVE GALA DINNER DANCE

Celebrate the arrival of 2016 in style with us at our Gala Dinner Dance. After walking up the red carpet, the evening will commence with a sparkling wine reception, followed by a magnificent 6 course dinner. After dinner, join us for dancing with our live band and DJ. Drinks Reception from 7.15pm Dinner served at 8pm. Carriages at 2am Dress Code: Smart £80 per person Gala Dinner, Bed & Breakfast package, £112.50 per person (based on two adults sharing - a single supplement will apply)

To book your table: please call 01733 375527 or email jade.luxford@marriott.com PETERBOROUGH MARRIOTT HOTEL Lynchwood Business Park Peterborough, , PE2 6GB PeterboroughMarriott.co.uk Peterborough Marriott Hotel @MarriottPeterbo Subject to availability. Deposit required £50 per adult Full Payment by 1 December 2015. Over 18 years only. Tables of 6 or less will be joined with other parties.

Christmas Day:

lunch to be served at 2pm

7.30am Preheat the oven and prepare turkey 8.15am Make the bread sauce if you haven’t

already. If you are using a warming oven, put in the required plates and serving dishes. Set up coffee and tea trays for later. 11.30am Prepare sausage and bacon rolls for cooking. Reheat bread sauce and place it in a jug with butter on top to melt over the surface, and keep warm. Noon: Start steaming the Christmas pudding. If you’re drinking red wine with your meal, you may want to give it time to breathe. Open now. You’ve survived the morning, well done! Pour yourself a glass of bucks fizz to celebrate. 12.45pm: Make the roast potatoes and prepare saucepans of boiling water for sprouts and other vegetables. 1.15pm: Remove turkey from oven, cover loosely with foil and leave to rest. 1.30pm: Check bacon rolls, remove and keep warm. 1.45pm: Put sprouts on to cook and gravy on to heat. While they are cooking, dish up food into serving dishes and carve the turkey. Check Christmas pudding. 2.00pm: Tuck in and enjoy!

LEGAL

It seems to be established now that Christmas starts in November: the shops are bristling with seasonal stuff, the TV advertising campaigns are in full flow.

T

his is meant to be a happy time for families but along with all the festive traditions it is recognised that the stresses of Christmas can act as a catalyst to relationship breakdown. Breaking up is hard to do…. whether you are married to your partner or not. Time and again we emphasise that common law husbands and wives are a fiction and cohabiting families do not have the legal protection a marriage can claim. Basically, the law does not acknowledge that a man and woman, or same sex couple, living together outside the state of marriage, have any legal rights one against the other. What to do? Again, we repeat so many times, think about what could go wrong in the future – it may not be very romantic, but one in three relationships are at risk of breakdown whether you are married or not. Agree from the outset what the two of you would do if you do end up going your separate ways. How would you share the equity in your home and its contents, how would you apportion the debts? People insure their home against loss and breakage. Why ever don’t they insure their relationship? – you know it makes sense.

Happy Christmas!

Mulled port & lemon

Delicious December

The Season of Goodwill ..?

If you find mulled wine too heavy, try this refreshing alternative Christmas drink, served in ‘frosted’ glasses Ingredients • • • • • • • • •

1 orange 1 lemon 750ml bottle ruby port 2 star anise (optional) 4 cloves 2 cinnamon sticks, plus more to serve (optional) plenty of ice, to serve orange and lemon slices, to serve lemonade, for topping up

Method Using a peeler, pare thin strips of zest from the orange and lemon. Squeeze the juice. Put the zests and juice into a large saucepan, then add the Port and remaining ingredients. Simmer very gently for 20 mins, then leave to cool completely. Can be made up to 1 week ahead and chilled. To serve, ‘frost’ the glasses if desired (see ‘Tip’, below left), put ice and slices of orange and lemon in each glass, then carefully pour in equal quantities of the Port and lemonade.

FOOD AND DRINK

Candy cane lollipops

Festive fondant fancies

These pretty sweet treats take just 15 minutes to make from just three ingredients - perfect as a last-minute edible gift or stocking filler.

Ingredients • 1kg ready-to-roll icing block • blue and green food colouring • 20cm square, or a 30 x 20cm traybake cake • decorate with sprinkles, sugared almonds, mini marshmallows and small gingerbread men (we used Marks & Spencer Gingerbread men, 99p for 9

Ingredients • 12 peppermint candy canes • 200g white chocolate, chopped edible sprinkles (we used gold pearls from Dr Oetker)

Fruitcake with cheese & apples

Method Put your ready-to-roll icing block in a large bowl and pour over boiling water to cover. After 10-15 mins the icing should be soft. Pour off water, and mix icing in bowl, adding a dribble more hot water until you get a smooth, runny but thickish icing.

The classic combination of apples and cheese is given a lift with thin slices of sweet fruitcake - a great festive party canapé or buffet treat

Divide evenly in 3 and add a little blue colouring to one third, and a little blue and green colouring to another third. Slice a 20cm square, or a 30 x 20cm tray bake cake into roughly equal, portion-sized squares, and sit them on a wire rack above a large tray. Spoon some icing over each cake to cover, then decorate with sprinkles, sugared almonds, mini marshmallows and small gingerbread men.

Method

You will need • 6 ovenproof lolly sticks • cellophane bags and ribbons (if giving as a gift) Method Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and line 2 baking sheets with baking parchment. Arrange the candy canes in pairs on the trays, to make heart shapes. Put a lolly stick between each one, where they meet at the bottom. Put the trays in the oven and cook for 5 mins. The candy canes should now be soft enough for you to carefully pinch together where they join at the top and the bottom, around the stick. Be careful as the canes will be extremely hot, but work quickly or they will set and you won’t be able to pinch them together. Melt the chocolate in a pan over a bowl of barely simmering water, or in the microwave. Spoon the melted chocolate into the middle of the heart lollies, pushing it out to fill the spaces. Scatter over your choice of sprinkles, then leave to cool completely. When set, peel off the baking parchment, wrap in cellophane bags and tie with a ribbon to give as a gift.

Ingredients • • •

2 x 400g rectangular fruitcakes triangular slices of Lancashire cheese finely slices pieces of apple a little lemon juice (if not eating immediately)

Cut the fruitcakes into thin pieces and top each with a slice of Lancashire cheese and a piece ofapple, tossed in a little lemon juice if not eating immediately. Can be made up to 1 hr ahead.

PETS’ PATCH

Dog Tracks Introducing local and reliable service, Dog Tracks, to Hampton pet owners. Dog Tracks owner, Lucy, is offering affordable help caring for your pet and her services include socialising, fitness, general visits, feeding and welfare. Lucy has always had a huge passion for animals, be it domesticated or wild. However she has a special place in her heart for dogs having owned and trained many over the years.

The benefits of using Dog Tracks are: •

Your pets will be much happier staying at home rather than a kennel or cattery, which can also be expensive.

•

Pets will be cared for by a genuine animal lover.

•

Regular walks, as well as other forms of exercise, can help reduce or eliminate any of your pet’s destructive chewing, digging, or scratching. Pets are like children: If you are not giving them something constructive to do, you may not like what they choose to do!

Lucy’s idea of a perfect day would be walking in a woodland exploring the great outdoors with a pooch by her side. She would love to help others by giving that extra care for your beloved pets for • when you are too busy or when you may not be able to give them the attention they need. Before any agreement is set in place Lucy is happy to come and visit so you can be sure you pet is happy in her company.

Your home will be more secure while you are away, post cleared and any other requested jobs will ensure your home doesn’t look like no-one is at home.

•

Cat visiting/feeding is available, as well as other pets you may have.

•

Only dogs from the same home are walked together, meaning more one on one time with your pooch.

•

Dog Tracks can work around any schedule and plan a visit or walk around your dog’s requirements.

For further information please contact Lucy on 07506642510 or lucycshelton@hotmail.co.uk

PETS’ PATCH

Separation anxiety in dogs

HELPFUL

TIPS Before you go for a longer period try these tips:

Some dogs love us too much. There are lots of reasons why they show behavioural problems when left alone. Young dogs that have not been taught to be left alone can exhibit continuous barking, digging or chewing household items – and in more extreme cases urinating and fouling in the house. By Suzhy Winifield RVN

R

escue dogs are particularly prone to this behaviour as they fear a repeat of their history when they may have been left alone for prolonged periods and unsure of the greeting they will get upon your return. There are a number of things you can do to help. First you must try and teach your puppy or dog that they can tolerate planned and short periods without you. Leave your dog in a room that they are used to and normally left

in, close the door and walk away. Not more than five minutes later return to the room – without over fussing the dog. This will show the dog that it is perfectly normal for you to not be there all the time. Repeat this exercise several times through the day gradually extending the time you are absent from the room. If your dog starts to bark, cry, scratches at the door or has chewed something when you return, leave for a shorter period

next time and then try increasing it again. Once you have reached 30 minutes when the dog has tolerated being left then you can step up to actually leaving the house. When you have established that the dog is tolerating your absence you can extend the period of time you are away but always remember to leave the dog in the same room with restricted access to the rest of the house.

 Take the dog/s for a nice long walk or a good play session well before you plan to leave. This will ensure that they have had time to settle down and are not all excited and hyper from the exercise  Don’t make a big thing of leaving the house – if you don’t say a big ‘goodbye’ when you leave the house this will reduce the dogs mental awareness of you not being there  Feed your dog a small meal a short time before you leave – this can make your dog more relaxed and sleepy  Make sure that the room you leave your dog in is safe! If they are going to exhibit destructive behaviour in the initial days then ensure no electrical cables, poisonous plants or valuable items are within their reach.
