...to the November issue of the Hampton Gazette. 11 November, 2020, also known as Armistice Day, marks 102 years since the end of the First World War. Every year in November, the nation marks the wars that have scarred our past and the bravery of the men and women who fought them. Remembrance Sunday and Armistice day, which falls on Sunday 8 November and Wednesday 11 November this year, offer us all the chance to remember not just those who fought, but what they fought for. I’m comforted to know that the ceremony at the Cenotaph in London is still going ahead, although with a much-reduced appearance by the members of the Armed Forces. While local ceremonies are unlikely The Royal British Legion is encouraging us all to fundraise in a number of ways, you can find more details at www.britishlegion.org.uk/getinvolved/poppy-appeal

Christ the Servant King the Parish Church of Hampton envelope pioneer@cskhampton.church

FACEBOOK /cskhamptonchurch

I meet many people in my role as Vicar of Hampton’s church, not just Christians who attend our services. At CSK we support people of all faiths and none. Many people in our community are struggling at this time with grief. Grief is not only something we feel when we lose a loved one to death; many are experiencing signs of grief at this time with the losses of recent months. Loss of freedoms, loss of jobs, loss of relationships, loss of being able to see and hug family and friends, loss of what everyone recognized as ‘normality’, loss of holidays, and most especially, at this time, we think of those who have lost loved ones to the disease. In the Bible in Matthew’s Gospel we read these words: ‘Blessed are those who mourn for they will be comforted.’ Psalm 46 says these words; ‘Be still and know that I am God.’ If you’re mourning and grieving, whether that’s because you’ve lost a loved one or grieving another

form of loss, why not come along to our church space, and spend a few minutes being still, and experiencing a touch of God’s love, comfort and support? The church is open any time Chimes Coffee Shop is open. On Sunday the 1st November, if the guidance allows us to, we will be holding our annual ‘Time to Remember, Time to Give Thanks’ service in CSK at 3pm. This is for those who have lost a loved one, whether recently or a long time ago. Names of loved ones are read out and there’s an opportunity to light a candle in their memory. If you’re reading this after the 1st, please know you are welcome to come into the church at any time to remember your loved one. If you’d like to meet up with me or one of my colleagues for a confidential chat about what you’re going through, please do get in touch with us. We would love to be able to support you and pray for you. Every Blessing, Sylvia

Lakeside Healthcare Better Health – Every Mind Matters The past few months have been hard on everyone, including children and young people. As a group, young people are currently reporting higher levels of stress and anxiety than the adult population, and their parents and carers are understandably concerned. That’s why in September, Public Health England (PHE) is launched the next phase of the Better Health – Every Mind Matters campaign, designed to support children and young people’s mental wellbeing. Try NHS free mind plan quiz now www.nhs.uk/oneyou/every-mind-matters/yourmind-plan-quiz/ and discover simple steps to look after your mental wellbeing. Or use the QR code below.

Hold your #HeadHigh Lung cancer awareness month take places every November in the UK. The aim of the campaign is to encourage people displaying the common symptoms of lung cancer, such as a persistent cough, breathlessness or unexplained weight-loss, to contact their GP. Raising pancreatic cancer awareness can be done as an individual or group all year long, but it is especially important during Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month in November. It is a time of the year when we have the most voices speaking about out pancreatic cancer. We sadly say goodbye to our Lead Nurse/Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Kerry Gardner. She has been promoted to Chief Nurse for the whole of Lakeside Health Group and we thank her for her excellent contribution to our Yaxley site and wish her well in her exciting new role. We welcome our new Nurse Practitioners, Susan Holland and Nicola Blake.

HAMPTON HEALTH As the end of 2020 approaches many will be reflecting on what has been a very strange and different year. If anything has to be taken from the past few months it is that, we as a nation need to talk more and to identify and appreciate the impact of looking out for one another, for family, friends and colleagues. Being aware of your mental health is something that many may not see as a priority but it should be. Those of you who are patients at our surgery will know we sadly lost one of our own lovely colleagues recently. The impact of losing a colleague has affected us all greatly and we are all still coming to terms with this. It has been a very tough few weeks. We have all learnt that talking about issues and maintaining a support system is vital to helping us get through these tough times and the last few months. Recent Hampton Health news: We have recently demerged from Octagon Medical Practice. After careful consideration the partners of Octagon Medical Practice have decided to refigure into smaller groups of practices and as Hampton Health was one of the surgeries that had not fully merged the decision has been made that we will now be Hampton Health as previously known. This means we will continue as an independent GP practice with no changes to how patients receive care, specifically:  Patients will remain registered at the current practice  Opening times will remain the same  Clinics and services will continue as previously Keeping up to date with us: At Hampton Health we are committed to providing our patients with care and compassion. These remain uncertain times and the way we operate may be slightly different to what it used to be but we are starting to see more patients, offer more routine appointments and face to face GP visits where required.  At the beginning of lock down all GP surgeries were advised to cease all non urgent appointments, this included appointments such as routine bloods, cervical screening and reviews. We are putting on extra cervical screening clinics

to ensure extra availability for those requiring screening. Our healthcare assistants are working tirelessly to ensure there is maximum availability for blood tests, be this urgent or routine. Contraceptive coil and implant clinics have now restarted also.  We have a plentiful supply of flu vaccinations including the nasal flu for those children aged twoto three-year-olds. There are various appointments available for these during the week. For eligibility head to https://www.gov.uk/government/ collections/annual-flu-programme to see if you are entitled. If you are eligible please do ring for an appointment. You may be aware, the government initiative of offering 50 - 64 year olds will commence in November subject to vaccine availability. If you are in this criteria we will be in touch to advise you to book an appointment for the flu vaccination. We also offer shingles and pneumonia vaccines dependant on eligibility and vaccine availability. As always we appreciate your constructive feedback and comments. Please direct these to the Practice Lead on the following email address: no-reply@hampton.health@nhs.net Keep safe and take care of one another. The Hampton Health Team

Hampton Community Remembrance 2020 These plans for Remembrance 2020 were decided early in October to meet the Gazette deadline for publication in this November issue. With the changing times we are in, the plans for Sunday the 8th November 2020, Remembrance Sunday, may need to change depending on the current COVID advice at that time. So please do check the Hampton Gazette Facebook page or contact the CSK Church office office@cskhampton. church for confirmation of the Sunday plans. Reverend Sylvia Kinder, Hampton Parish Council (HPC), O&H Hampton, Hampton Scout Group and Hampton Guides Group warmly invite the Hampton community to join in with The Hampton Remembrance Day Service. The service itself will take place no matter what restrictions are in place as it will be available on line. Members of Hampton Community will be involved in this service and the service will include wreath laying and two minutes silence. The service will be available to watch from 10am on Remembrance Sunday and will continue to be available to view any day after the Sunday. Access the service on the CSK Hampton Church Youtube channel.

The following plan is dependent on COVID restrictions at the time: On Sunday the 8th November at 10:55am Reverend Sylvia Kinder and other members of the organising group, will gather, following social distancing rules, at the memorial garden to have two minutes silence at 11am, lay wreaths and say a few prayers. If you would like to be at the memorial garden, please wear a mask and please follow all social distancing rules. From 11:15am on Sunday the 8th November, small poppy crosses will be lined up outside the front of CSK Church. The person putting the crosses out will hand sanitise before touching the crosses. Anytime from 11:15am you are welcome to go and collect a cross and place it at the memorial garden. We ask that you do this adhering to the current social distancing guidelines. We apologise that this year we are unable to mark this important day in our usual way as a community with a procession and full public service, but hope that many of you will engage in this important day of remembering by watching the on line service we provide and/or visiting the memorial garden at some point during Sunday the 8th November.

‘When you go back, tell them of us and say, For Your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today’. We hope that our annual Hampton Memorial Service will ensure that our community continues to mark the national Act of Remembrance to respectfully honour that,

’At the going down of the Sun, and in the morning, We will Remember Them’. For, and on behalf of: Reverend Sylvia, O&H Hampton, Hampton Parish Council, Hampton Guide Unit and Hampton Scout Group,

Full fibre broadband is coming to Peterborough! Peterborough is one of the first UK locations to benefit from new citywide full fibre connectivity following a private investment from CityFibre totalling over £30m. What’s the different between full fibre and what I currently have? Residents in parts of Hampton can now connect to one of the fastest broadband services in the world. That’s a dramatic upgrade on what most people currently use and makes all sorts of things – like gaming and using multiple devices – much easier in terms of speeds and data handling. More importantly, full fibre networks offer far greater reliability than existing copper-based networks while being cheaper to maintain and operate – meaning more reliable internet for you!

What is CityFibre’s role in full fibre infrastructure? You may have already seen CityFibre’s distinctive bright green banners in the street as they install the new network throughout the area. We take a phased approach to the roll out of the fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) network and install the network quickly, taking only 1-2 days outside your property, while working closely with Peterborough City Council, as well as local communities, to ensure minimum disruption to residents.

Full fibre networks offer far greater reliability than existing copper-based networks while being cheaper to maintain and operate – meaning more reliable internet for you!

Where and how do I sign up? Once a build area is complete, households will be able to take a service direct from our partner Vodafone who will be in contact to advise of the service packages are available. In the meantime, you can register your interest and be advised when the new service is available to you here www.cityfibre.com/ hampton

Yaxley Amateur Drama group produce interactive murder mystery movie on 14 November to help the group survive through the pandemic. ‘Lethal Lockdown’

Yaxley Amateur Players The COVID-19 pandemic has meant that theatres and live venues are unable to open and operate as normal. The theatre industry is struggling, and this is even more so for local theatres who rely on local audiences to keep the groups, shows and venues running. One group has overcome this problem by using the pandemic to their advantage. The very talented group member, Diane Pickett, has written and directed an interactive murder mystery movie, set during the lockdown. The movie has been filmed in the group members gardens, via mobile phones in their houses, via zoom and out on location. Diane said ‘We are doing something that no other amateur group has done, and it is exciting to be doing something very different from our usual live shows’

Browns removals have been moving homes for the past 35 years. So whether your removal is large or small, you’re moving home, moving office, or require long or short term storage, be rest assured that we have the knowledge and experience to ensure your removal is carried out smoothly and stress free. ‘Lethal Lockdown’ is being sold as a pay per view show that will be aired on 14 November. Audiences can purchase a view through the group website, they will then be able to watch the movie and try to guess who the murderer is. The murderer will then be announced via a link later in the evening. Audiences send in their answers via email after watching the show and the winner will be contacted that evening via email.

Packaging materials, padlocks an d insurance available

‘Lethal Lockdown’ is fully interactive and allows the group to reach a wider audience during the Pandemic. Only one view per household needs to be purchased and families and friends can get together to watch and join in with the guessing. It was important to the group to do something during the pandemic as at this time of year they would normally be rehearsing for their annual panto which they have never missed in the groups 40-year history. ‘The group is like one big family and so not only does this help keep the group surviving, it also means that the members still feel part of something and have something exciting to do during these time’ Diane.

CHRIST MAS

Christmas Magic at Peterborough Cathedral 2.30pm and 7.30pm, Saturday 12 December Christmas Magic, the city’s favourite Christmas celebration, is set to return to Peterborough Cathedral on Saturday 12 December. After an uncertain few months, with no large-scale live performances in the city - or indeed anywhere - this is fantastic news for Peterborough and its multi-award winning choirs Peterborough Male Voice Choir and Peterborough Voices, and a wonderful opportunity for them to return to performing with one of their best-loved events of the year! Now in its tenth successful season, and its third with the stunning backdrop of Peterborough Cathedral, the everpopular Christmas extravaganza has become an established high point of the festive season in the city. With a 2.30pm matinee for the whole family to enjoy as well as an evening performance at 7.30pm, there’s something for everyone young and old, so be sure to bring the kids and the grandparents too! Expect to hear festive favourites like Most Wonderful Time of Year, When a Child is Born White Christmas, Little Saint Nick, The Christmas Song, Santa Baby, Winter Wonderland, It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas and many more, to get your Christmas celebrations off to a flying start! Showcasing performances from Peterborough Male Voice Choir and Peterborough Voices, Christmas Magic will also feature Peterborough Festival Brass with instrumental classics like Sleigh Ride.

The choirs’ director William Prideaux says “Christmas Magic is a wonderful opportunity for us to have fun, celebrate and put on a fantastic show for our home audience, who give us such fantastic support throughout the year. It’s the icing on the cake to perform in the stunning setting of Peterborough Cathedral and - this year more than ever - we’re looking forward to digging out our Christmas jumpers and presenting a really memorable afternoon and evening of festive fun for all the family!” A revised, covid-secure seating plan means that availability is limited, with fewer than five hundred seats across both performances, and they’re selling faster than ever before with over thirty percent of these already booked! So…don’t miss out, get your tickets today and take advantage of early bird prices, available until 1st October. After this year, we all need something wonderful to look forward to!

The most asked question i get at the moment is, of course, 'When will it be safe for me to travel?'

Lakota (Lover of Nature) Have you noticed the large flocks of honking Canada Geese flying over Hampton evening skies in recent days? They fly directly over our Vale house from one lake to another on their way to their roosting site. It’s quite a magnificent sight, if a somewhat noisy one! They apparently honk to encourage those in front to keep up their speed. The typical V shape formation actually serves two purposes. Firstly, it conserves energy due to the fact that each bird flies slightly above the bird in front, resulting in a reduction of wind resistance. The birds take turns being in front, falling back when they get tired. Secondly, the V formation enables the birds to see each other better and therefore to keep track of each other. Canada geese like to rest on or near large bodies of water at night – and we have plenty of those in Hampton. The many ears and eyes help to protect the flock against predators, and sitting on water keeps them safe from foxes.

Apparently it was Charles II in 1665 who brought these geese from the new colonies in North America to adorn his London garden: St James’s Park. These colonial geese, as they were first named, gradually spread to other aristocratic stately homes. Then, as was often the case with captive animals, many of them escaped to create a wild population. We do have a fair number of these geese in Hampton with their numbers having quadrupled nationally since the sixties. There are now thought to be around 190 000 pairs in this country.

Canada Geese aren’t native to this country, as their name suggests.

A few things to ponder on as you watch the flocks fly over Hampton skies.

It is very difficult to distinguish between male and female Canada Geese due to the plumage colouring being almost the same. In Hampton they are pretty much the second largest bird weighing between 2.5 and 6.5 kg, apart from the Mute swans who weigh between 9 and 11.5 kg. Their food consists of pondweed, sedge, grass, seeds and grains, supplemented occasionally with insects, snails and tadpoles.

Instantly we know the sound A thousand feet above the ground. Wings abeating, smooth air flow, Keen eyes scanning earth below. Day is waning, fails the light. Time for dropping from the height, Time for refuge, rest and food, Leader call to set the mood. Guy Stoye

The answer is that no-one actually knows and, to be honest, I believe that the next few months will be hit and miss ! I have everything crossed that the Easter and spring holidays all go ahead and we start looking at a little more normality in the world of travel. The most popular places to book for next year are Greek islands and Turkey and Bulgaria and we are also finding that people are trying to travel further afield next year, especially when they have not been away this year, so once-in-a-lifetime holidays such as New York, Caribbean, the Indian Ocean and Thailand are popular choices.

Once-in-a-lifetime holidays such as New York, Caribbean, the Indian Ocean and Thailand are popular choices. We have all missed our holidays this year (unless you were one of the lucky few to escape this summer) and we are all missing that feeling of sitting by the pool all day with a sangria beside us and reading the latest novel on the bestsellers' list. The thought of this will help many of us get through these dark winter nights. Please do not worry about booking to go away next year, because as long as it is with a reputable travel agent that can give you help and advise and guide you to the ABTA/ATOL protected holidays then you will have piece of mind that someone is on the end of the phone should you need them at all. For short haul holidays, i have found that Jet 2 and Tui have been really good at keeping us up-to-date and and also, for that special holiday further afield, I have found that Hays tour operator and Kuoni are being particularly helpful during the current situation If you want to get in touch please go to my facebook page and follow my deals that I post for all over the world and also some stayction lodges too. DISCOVERING

As many of you will be thinking about Christmas shopping by now, what could be better than a handmade unique gift, made locally? Not only does it reduce the carbon footprint, its supports the local community, rather than putting the money in the hands of the large retailers.

Lexy Wells Lexy Wells is a Peterborough based primary schoolteacher and a member of Peterborough Artists Open Studios. Since childhood, Lexy loved art and was often found with a paintbrush in her hand. After seeing an encaustic wax demonstration three years ago Lexy swapped her brushes for a craft iron and is now a self taught encaustic wax artist. She has since hosted workshops and exhibited at events across the county.

Lexy Wells

Although Lexy still produces both watercolour and mixed media artwork, she particularly enjoys painting with wax due to the vivid colours and abstract, fantasy pieces that can be achieved. Each piece is unique and wax painting forces you to loosen up and go with the flow, so it's a good meditative practise. There’s a long history of wax painting, which predates the Ancient Egyptian period. Due to the amazing properties of wax, many of the paintings discovered in Egyptian temples are still intact and vibrant. Lexy's paintings and cards can be found in her Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/shop/LexyWellsArt and on Facebook: @ LexyWellsArtsAndCrafts

Karen Mann Karen Mann is a Mosaic artist. Karen had always been interested in mosaic art and it wasn’t until 2013 when she came across a mosaic artist in Devon quite by accident while on line and decided there and then to book a 2 days mosaic course and things progressed from there. She uses coloured glass and recycled mirrors to create her mosaics and generally grout in black as this makes the colours pop!

Lexy Wells Karen Mann

She was working full time so it was just a hobby at first but moving from Kent last year with no job during lock down she has been able to spend the summer creating mosaics. Creating has been a godsend during lock down and has kept her sane! Creativity keeps you busy and helps your mental health, giving you something to focus on. Karen was in an Art in the Garden exhibition a few years ago at Borde Hill gardens in East Sussex where she received quite a few commissions. I have done craft fairs, art fairs however I don’t have anything booked due to Covid but once things start to pick up I will post it on my Facebook page Mad on Mosaics.

PROJECT: Birds in the style of Abby Diamond Watercolour, pencil and a black fine liner pen are all you need. Pencil in your basic design, dampen your paper to let your watercolour paints flow. The paint doesn’t need to stay in the lines, you can drip and splatter, too. Once the paint is dry, Use the fine liner, create outline, texture, shading, be expressive!

Karen Mann

Sadly, most fairs have been postponed, due to Covid but you can find a full list of artists and what they make on Peterborough Artists Open Studios website, they have also started an online shop peterboroughgiftshop.com where you can find some beautiful gifts.

foodguide Chimes Coffee Shop Come in and see us or take us away! Autumn is upon us and, as Julia at Chimes says, that means only one thing: ‘Our popular freshly made soups are back on the lunch menu, served with crusty baguette or bread, to warm you from the inside out’. If you haven’t already been back to Chimes, CSK’s Coffee Shop, you’ll find it open from 9.30am-2.30pm Wednesday to Saturday, serving its usual wide range of speciality teas and coffees, light lunches and of course signature scones and cakes and you’ll find details of what’s on offer on Chimes’ popular Facebook page. A runaway favourite this Autumn has been Chimes Luxury Cream Tea Takeaway. As one customer wrote on Facebook: ‘Cannot recommend the Chimes Cream Tea Takeaway enough! Beautifully fresh and tasty sandwiches, cakes, scones and much much more. We purchased one for a stay at home birthday treat (shielding in style!) and couldn’t believe how high the quality was – thank-you everyone’.

Easy-Peasy Beef Wellington A delicious dish to warm us up, but did you know why its called Beef Wellington? The Duke was given his title after defeating Napoleon Bonaparte the year before, and not long after he became Prime Minister. Such an iconic character needed immortalising, so (naturally) they named a pastry ensconced beef dish after him. ... and also the finished dish looks a bit like a wellington boot, hence the name. Enough of the history lesson let’s get cooking! When cooked correctly these ‘cheaper’ joints can be equally as tasty. A firm favourite at home, here is my take on Beef Wellington, serves 4. Ingredients ½ lb mushrooms / ½ onion 2 tbsp butter / Salt and pepper 4 oz smooth pâté / 1 tbsp oil 1½ lb beef tenderloin Salt and pepper; to taste 1 pack frozen puff pastry Method

Julia said: ‘If you have something special to celebrate, or just want to treat yourself, the Teas are £12 per person and we need 24 hrs notice. Please order via Messenger and let us know how we can personalise it for you – for example. vegetarian, gluten-free, Taylors coffee bags rather than tea – just let us know!’

1 Puree the mushrooms and onions together in a food processor. Melt the  butter in a skillet over medium heat, add the mushroom and onion mixture and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is dry. Add salt and pepper to taste and mash in the pâté. Transfer the stuffing to a bowl and chill in the refrigerator.

Stir Up Sunday

2 Heat the oil in a skillet over high heat. Add the beef and sear on all sides.  Remove the beef from the skillet and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place in the refrigerator until cold.

By Tom Hancock

Stir Up Sunday always falls on the last Sunday before advent. In 2020 this means it will be celebrated on Sunday 22 November. The tradition dates back to Victorian times, when the family would gather together to stir the Christmas pudding the Sunday before advent began. The opening words of the Book Of Common Prayer, read on this Sunday before Advent, are ‘Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord’, which is probably where the name came from. Originally Christmas pudding contained 13 ingredients said to represent Jesus and his disciples.

3 Roll out chilled puff pastry into a rectangle large enough to enclose the beef.  Spread the dough with a generous layer of stuffing, place the beef on top and spoon another bit of stuffing on the beef. Wrap the pastry to enclose the beef and stuffing and place the Wellington in the refrigerator to chill for at least 15 minutes.

 4 Preheat oven to 220C/425F. Place Wellington in oven and immediately lower heat to 175C/350F. Roast for about 20 minutes Serve with seasonal roast and steamed vegetables.

It is stirred by each member of the family from East to West, to remember the Wise Men that visited Jesus in the Nativity Story. This is the point where you make a wish though no-one knows when that was added to the tradition. Charms were often added to the pud and said to bring luck if you found them in your portion on Christmas Day. Historically the lucky charms were a silver coin for wealth, a wishbone for luck, a thimble for thrift, a ring for marriage, and an anchor for safe harbour. Later coins were often used instead. As needing expensive emergency dental treatment is definitely NOT considered lucky it might be wise to forgo that particular tradition nowadays or at least give your serving a thorough inspection before you tuck in. The traditional sprig holly on top of the pud was said to represent the crown of thorns worn by Jesus on the cross. Holly and its berries are extremely toxic so it might be better to stick to artificial greenery. As to why we set fire to the pudding, no-one seems to know. One theory is that the flames represent the power of Christ, another is that Christian traditions mingled with the midwinter festivals of light, and the pudding, with its high alcohol content was simply a good candidate for being ignited!

younggazette At Hampton Vale Primary Academy we recognise how important it is to be fully immersed in a topic in order to really get a sense of context and deeper understanding.

Hampton Vale Primary Academy First hand experiences not only excite and inspire our senses but we also know that children tend to retain more information in this way. We have created a WW2 quad to support our 'World at War' topic in upper KS2. This includes a full size tank which has crashed through the wall, an Anderson shelter full of artefacts, a poppy filled remembrance area, a war timeline for children to follow important events and dates and a dig for victory patch for children to grow their own vegetables.

During the World at War topic the children take part in experiences outside in the quad including an 'air raid' and also a re-enactment of evacuation during the war. There are information boards linked to each area full of facts to support our knowledge based curriculum and some amazing artwork on the walls of a war room, soldiers at war and even a plane flying overhead. Thank you to Street Arts Hire for their wonderful graffiti work, it really brings the space to life.

younggazette Holme Church of England Primary Academy “Pupils are a joy….They mix happily together at breaktime and lunchtime and move in a very orderly manner around the highly attractive school environment….Pupils have a very strong work ethic…” (Ofsted, ‘Good’ school judgement, March 2017). “There is an outstanding sense of valuing all as precious children of God” (SIAMs Church Inspection, ‘Outstanding’ Church school judgement, January 2018). We are a small, inclusive, primary school in the beautiful village of Holme. We have excellent teaching across the school with children making strong progress from their starting points. Our recent KS2 SATs outcomes for Yr 6, including 100% for reading, place our school significantly above the national average, meaning that our children leave primary school well equipped for their secondary education.

We provide a rich, varied curriculum utilising our many outdoor spaces. We care deeply about each and every one of our children and work hard to ensure that each one reaches their potential. Our spacious EYFS classroom has immediate access to our newly revamped outdoor area. Our reception class has a maximum of 21 children.

Due to restrictions we will be welcoming parents via virtual tours. Please telephone the school office for further details.

Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School Everyone at the Baby Unit has enjoyed reading the 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' story book. The children have explored sensory experiences from the story such as walking through 'the swishy swashy grass,' and 'splish sploshing through the water' to find the bear! We have limited spaces left to start with us this academic year; we are now booking places onwards from September 2021. If you would like to come and have a look around or are interested in a space please contact the nursery on 01733 244000 or enquiries@littleacorns-daynursery.co.uk

We also have places in some other year groups. Please call the school office for details. School office : 01487 830342 www.holme.cambs.sch.uk

Make the most of October Half Term with new Nature’s School downloadable resources for families Are you looking for free educational, inspiring, and fun activities for your family this Autumn? The environmental charity PECT has expanded its range of learning resources in time for the October half term, to help enhance children’s understanding of the world around them.

Volunteers needed to listen to children read in local primary schools after lockdown Our reading volunteers are going to be desperately needed following the Coronavirus pandemic. Thousands of children won’t have had enough reading practice during lockdown. In a normal year, one in four children leave primary school unable to read well. Most children will have missed a term of school, so the reading gap is now even wider. Children who struggle with reading are more likely to live in poverty and be unemployed as adults. School readers needs more volunteers in your area to support children’s reading and prevent them falling further behind. If you want to make a difference to a child’s life, apply to become a School reader. No qualifications are needed; just a love of reading and some spare time each week. To join us, please visit the website www.schoolreaders.org/volunteerapplication-form or call 01234 924111 for further information.

The charity’s autumn-themed Nature’s School resources aim to bring families together and enable them to discover more about the environment. The resource activities include everything from guides to making a Leaf Lantern, Mini Beast Hotel, Pumpkin Decorating, Tree Seed I-Spy and many more. “Many areas of the country are currently in lockdown, nationwide restrictions are in place, and everyone is looking for alternative ways to entertain and educate their children,” explains PECT’s Environmental Education Lead Heidi Latronico-Ferris. “Here at PECT we are doing our bit to help

children and their families try to make sense of it all.” She continues: “Our local environment is sometimes an unexplored natural resource, often overlooked for its wealth of possibilities, and not always appreciated or looked after as it should be. Take this time to turn that around and discover natural wonders, learn from Nature’s School, and in return protect it for future generations.” Nature’s School is not just for families – schools, charities and other organisations can also benefit from this resource and use it to create new ways of delivering the curriculum and learning objectives.

To access the resources, simply visit https://www.pect.org.uk/projects/ natures-school-in-autumn/ or find PECT on Facebook @SustainablePECT.

As we age our face loses volume - sometimes quicker in certain people. This contributes to the lines deepening and making us look older or sad. The deep lines from the nose to mouth (known as Nasolabial lines) can be softened considerably and the lines which go from the sides of the A B mouth to the chin (known as Marionette lines). These are caused by the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin by over exposure of the sun for many years, weight loss and of course ageing etc. Fortunately, these lines can be softened and made less prominent which makes you look fresher A B and younger as the dermal filler helps stimulate the collagen again as well as plumping up the areas treated which is a big boost for your confidence and self-esteem. Volux is the latest Juvéderm filler and is designed to be used to sculpt and contour the chin and jaw area, giving facial definition by the restoration of volume. It’s now a top favourite and clients really notice the difference they see. There are other Juvéderm A Before treatment / B One month after treatment dermal fillers for the lower face too.

legallybinding

moneymatters by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants

How are you coping with Covid? Just because there is a pandemic, it doesn’t mean that family problems requiring the assistance of legal advice, are on hold. If anything, relationship breakdown and disputes over child arrangements between separated parents, are more prevalent. Most family law solicitors are back to offering a full service, if remotely. The Family Courts are almost all operating remotely, with BT conference calls in this area, sometimes a Skype hearing for that more intimate touch, if you are lucky. Very occasionally, for final hearings, you can actually be in a court room. The courts are not responding to any communication other than email and online applications. Navigating this new world can be bewildering for a litigant in person as an unrepresented spouse/parent is known, and you may wish to seek some initial advice from a solicitor to start you off on an application. Before you reach that point a family law solicitor will also point you in the direction of mediation before you rush off to court. Particularly in children cases, mediation can be a much more appropriate way of resolving disputes. The legal environment has changed radically like most other areas of life now days. If you need held finding your way around, contact a family law specialist in the first instance.

State pension age hits 66 and set to rise further The age at which most people start to receive the state pension has now officially hit 66 after steady rises in the qualifying age in recent years. Men and women born between 6 October, 1954, and 5 April, 1960, will start receiving their pension on their 66th birthday. For those born after that, there will be a phased increase in state pension age to 67, and eventually 68. It comes as the chancellor vowed the "triple lock" pledge is safe. Under this pledge, the state pension increases each year in line with the highest of average earnings, prices (as measured by inflation) or 2.5%. Coronavirus and the furlough scheme is set to distort the calculations for average wages and could mean one bumper year of pension increases. This has led MPs and economists to discuss how this could be smoothed out. But, when asked by LBC radio whether the triple lock was safe, Chancellor Rishi Sunak said: "Yes, our manifesto commitments are there and that is very much the legislative position. The full state pension for new recipients is worth ÂŁ175.20 a week. To receive the full amount, various criteria including 35 qualifying years of national insurance must be satisfied.

Women's pension campaign The age at which people receive the state pension has been increasing as people live longer, and the government has plans for the increase to 68 to be brought forward. However, the increases have been controversial, particularly for women who have seen the most significant rise. Campaigners claim women born in the 1950s have been treated unfairly by rapid changes and the way they were communicated to those affected. Some of those involved in the campaign recently lost a legal challenge, claiming the move was unlawful discrimination. "The increase to the state pension age provides a timely reminder to everyone to check your pension pots and ask yourself whether the savings you've built up are enough for the kind of life you want in retirement."

Plan ahead Younger workers have also been urged by pension providers to consider their retirement options, with a strong likelihood of state pension age rising further as time passes. Automatic enrolment is a Government initiative to help more people save for later life through a pensions scheme at work.

excellent Award for Local Garage

Since setting up Excel Auto Care on Holme Road in Yaxley four years ago, things have gone from strength to strength, and now with their most recent accolade ‘Garage of The Year 2020’ as voted for by the readers of the Peterborough Telegraph, it seems that hard work really does pay off Owner Nick Heyes says “We are a very forward thinking business and are very customer focussed. We go the extra mile because we believe every customer matters - young, old, those that know nothing about cars and those that do. “And that comes across; once they have sampled the level of service that they receive here, they come back again and don’t go anywhere else. We keep our customers happy and that has come across in the competition. We are delighted to have won. “We have been here for four years and have not changed our strategy from day one. It’s all about the customer offering a dealer level service at a local garage price.

“Of course we wouldn’t be where we are today without our fantastic customers, so a huge, huge thank you to each and every one of them”

Service, great price. As a woman, I’m always wary of garages, but I was put totally as ease and will use them for all my car needs”

“Love them, they’ve got me out of trouble a few times. Genuinely a great local garage that “Absolutely blown away by this garage. Went above delivers main dealer quality. I can’t fault them!” and beyond to help us on the day we were meant “This is the best garage I have ever used 100%. to go on holiday. They saved us so much stress. Nick and Bob are, in two words, my heroes…” Thank you all. Had nothing but superb service from here. Thoroughly recommended” Excel Auto Care Ltd “5* Really helpful guys, dropped me home and www.excelautocare.net picked me up, once my car was ready. The importance of making a Will & Powers of Attorney If you die without a Will, you die intestate; the law will determine who gets what. Having a Will at the date of your death makes it easier for your family and friends to deal with your matters when you have passed away. A Will allows you to appoint a person or people (called “Executors”) to administer your estate in accordance with your wishes. Certain types of Wills can also help reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax payable on your estate. Having a Will drawn up by a legal professional will make sure it is clear and follows the law. A Lasting Power of Attorney allows you to appoint people to make decisions on your behalf during your lifetime and/or if you lose mental capacity. There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney:

HANDY NUMBERS • A NUMBER FOR EVERYTHING TO ADVERTISE IN HANDY NUMBERS • CALL 07891 340535 APPROVED TRADERS

Give doorstep traders the cold shoulder as winter sets in As the colder weather sets in – winter proofing your property can be kinder to the environment and your pocket. At this time of year, the elements can take their toll on the home; we can expect gusty winds and heavy rain to play havoc when it comes to guttering, roof tiles, fences and even trees. Your driveway may have also lost its summer sparkle and be in need of a deep clean. But the changing of the seasons is a popular time for rogue doorstep traders to avoid hibernation and inflict their own kind of winter misery on unsuspecting homeowners. Trading Standards always advise to never accept an offer of work from cold callers who ‘happen to be in your area’. They will ask for cash up front, and more often than not, it will be for work which is unnecessary. Don’t be fooled by business cards with websites and telephone numbers which look genuine. Politely take the card – if you begin to feel vulnerable or intimidated - and say you will contact them at your convenience should you need their services. You can then check their contact details or ask a family member or friend to do so on your behalf. However, there are some simple but effective ways you take steps to winter proof your home and garden, and avoid a November nightmare:  Check all external pipes for breaks, leaks, and blockages. Blocked or leaking pipes can freeze during the cold months, then expand and burst – causing potentially expensive water damage.  Think about insulation. A properly insulated property is an absolute must. Make sure that you check the basics, starting with obvious draft points. Invest in some draft excluder to keep doors and windows secure. Check the cladding around your boiler and pipes, and make sure that taps and faucets don’t leak.  Bleed your radiators. A great way to warm up your property is to bleed the radiators. This releases any trapped air, allowing hot water to fill every part of your radiator and warm the property more efficiently.  Get a boiler service. Arrange for a professional to service your boiler each year. As everyone starts to switch on or boost their central heating, the surge in gas consumption can lead to a big increase in boiler breakdowns.  Clear out your gutters. In autumn, leaves can collect in gutters and drains, leading to blocks and overflows - so it’s best to clean them regularly. Consider investing in gutter leaf guards to help prevent your gutters becoming blocked in future.  Sweep your chimney. If your chimneys are in use, make sure that they get swept every year. This will remove the build-up of dirt and grime from your chimney walls. So, for all those winter maintenance jobs that still need planning in before the festive season, www.safelocaltrades.com should be your first port of call. We have a range of professional, recommended and reliable trades from chimney sweeps, boiler maintenance, electricians, roofing specialists, plumbers, tree surgeons – and just about anyone who can provide a service for your seasonal maintenance needs, and all in line with Covid-19 safety guidelines.
