TV weatherman Michael Fish opens Peterborough care home

Britain’s longest-serving TV weather forecaster Michael Fish has officially opened the doors of Clayburn Court care home, joined by the Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Peterborough.

ichael Fish met almost 100 influential members of the local community for a special launch event, after the first residents were welcomed to the 64-bed care home on Clayburn Road. The well-known weatherman enjoyed a guided tour with the Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Peterborough and the Chair of Hampton Parish Council, before raising a glass to Clayburn Court and cutting the ribbon to declare the care home officially open. Peterborough VIPs mingled with the Anchor team before gathering at the entrance to the home to watch the ribbon cutting ceremony and celebrate with a slice of cake.

Opening Anchor’s newest care home, Michael Fish said: “Many congratulations to all involved in getting Clayburn Court care home ready for its first residents. “From speaking with people around the room, it is obvious that residents will be welcomed into a vibrant community here in Peterborough which will enable them to live life to the full. “Clayburn Court strikes me as a characterful place to live, full of stories and memories - I’ve already chosen my room!” Lucy Holl, Anchor’s Regional Operations Director, commented: “We are very pleased to be opening this luxurious care home in

Cheeki Monkeys The Cheeki Monkeys baby and children markets are an excellent way for the families of Hampton to recycle their children’s clothes and toys and also excellent for mums and dads to grab a bargain.

Red for a day Staff at Tesco in Hampton wore red for a day and donated £1 in exchange, also selling red velvet cup cakes for a donation to our customers. They raised £240 for Thorpe Hospice and also £540 for Macmillan coffee morning.

We want to help children learn how their food is made and where it comes from, so they can have a better relationship with food.

anielle, who has set up this great idea has a little boy who grows out of clothes very quickly, so she wanted to find a way of selling them for some extra cash without the hassle of taking photos, packaging items and taking them to the post office which would also incur charges from PayPal and postage etc. She couldn’t find a solution so she decided to take action and signed with market organisers Cheeki Monkeys. The first Christmas market is in Hampton Community Hall on Sunday 6 December between 2.30pm and 4.30pm. It is very much like a table-top sale with mums and dads only paying £10 per stall and all the money they make, they will keep. There will also be face painters, children’s entertainers, balloons, photographers and a guest appearance from a surprise guests. A group of residents met last month to explore the idea of formalising the litter picking that different groups have been doing around Hampton.

Hampton In Action

nder the new name of ‘Hampton In Action’ the group would like to propose one hour monthly litter picking events and hope the initiative will be well supported by residents. They have a Facebook group that will be the hub of their activities, all dates and locations will be listed there, so please join in and keep up to date with events and feel free to highlight areas they should be targeting.

The plan is to go out the first Saturday of each month at 10.00am for one hour to various locations, responding to priority litter hot spots. There are only a handful of them initially so they are counting on plenty of support to make a noticeable improvement. Their first date will be slightly different as it is very much in response to what is expected to be a messy Halloween. As

Halloween is Saturday we want to respond as quickly as we can so will be meeting Sunday 1st November at 2pm near the two OneStop shops in both Hargate and Vale. The next date will be Saturday 5 December 10.00am. The location will be listed on the Facebook page. The group hopes you will join in taking action and helping to tidy up our beautiful community.

Having lived away from Peterborough for over 20 years, moving to Hampton Vale felt like coming home. I live here with my grown up daughter Immy and partner Colin. We are relatively new to Hampton Vale, but my family farmed at Norman Cross for generations so the area is very familiar.

I now have more time to devote to the community so was delighted to be elected Vice Chairman. I hope to meet many more residents in the near future as I have accepted shared responsibility for planning the celebrations for the Queens 90th birthday. The Parish Church of Hampton Remember, remember the 5th of November, gunpowder treason and plot ....

love the sound of fireworks and the amazing colours that light up the sky at this time of year, but let’s look at the history of all of this for a moment. The gunpowder plot saw a group of disaffected Roman Catholics conspire to assassinate the Protestant King James 1st by blowing up the House of Lords with matches, fuses and 36 barrels of gunpowder in 1605. The plan was foiled at the last minute; an event celebrated annually in Britain on 5 November. Sadly, battles have been fought on many occasions in the supposed promotion of faith by different religious groups. Christ the Servant King Hampton is your Parish Church of England. Each Sunday we meet together at 10am to worship God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Christians of all denominations belong to the CSK church family: Anglicans. Roman Catholics, Baptists, Pentecostals, and others. This is what is written in the book of Galatians in the bible: “In Christ’s family

there can be no division into Jew and non-Jew, slave and free, male and female. Among us you are all equal. That is, we are all in a common relationship with Jesus Christ.” (The message translation) We sometimes begin our time together in CSK sharing these words: “Spirit of unity, reconciling God, We have come on journeys of our own, to a place where journeys meet.” We treat everyone equally at CSK: God loves us all. If you’ve never journeyed to CSK on a Sunday morning, why not consider joining in at Hampton’s Community Remembrance Service at 10.30am in Serpentine Green on Sunday 8th November followed by refreshments in church with us after we have laid poppy wreaths at the Remembrance Garden. Our October meeting saw us making beautiful Christmas bauble decorations using festive fabric, polystyrene balls, pins, braid and a butter knife! Once again our ladies produced some amazing results and it has really got us into the mood for the forthcoming festive season. I made an error in the last issue of the Gazette. Our Hampton WI Christmas Fair is on Sunday 22 November and not as previously stated. We plan to have a wonderful selection of festive stalls and I hope you can join us.

Hampton Health Centre 7 Day NHS You are probably aware that David Cameron has committed to providing a 7 day NHS, and in Peterborough GP practices are working together to make that a reality by offering later opening hours in primary care.

o achieve this Hampton Health is working with two other practices in the area; Nene Valley Medical Practice and Yaxley Group Practice to offer appointments to patients up to 8pm at night. The way this will work is that the later appointments will be available to book Monday to Friday with a doctor or a nurse practitioner, however, as the late night clinics will be shared between all three practices, the appointment you are offered may not be at Hampton with one of your usual clinicians, it may be at Yaxley or at Nene Valley instead. We will also continue to offer early morning appointments on Wednesday mornings with doctors, practice nurse or health care assistant between 7am and 8am. We hope this new initiative will help increase access for patients to primary care services.

Aldi opening is a huge success The long awaited opening of our new Aldi store was a huge success when it opened back in late September.

Hampton College Primary canâ€™t thank Aldi enough for their kind donations to their first Autumn Fair. Store Manager Dan Goodson, is really keen to work with the community and support local events. Hampton Aldi donated a full trolley of goods plus a television and tablet. The friends of Hampton College were absolutely over the moon with the generosity. It looks like Aldi is another great asset to our community.

Muntjac: 'Bambi' or burden? Muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi) were first introduced from China to Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire by the 11th Duke of Bedford in the early 20th century. However, in about 1925, these small, yet canny deer had crossed the park borders to bravely explore the countryside beyond and establish what appears to be rapidly becoming their empire.

heir secretive yet tenacious nature, the distinct lack of natural predators, short gestation periods and all year round breeding were soon contributing to the widespread muntjak poplulation explosion. Peeping from one area of brambles or long grass before vanishing quickly into another, if startled, they will let out a harsh, slightly eerie bark, kindly alerting the rest of the deer within earshot to potential danger. In contrast to all other species of deer in Britain, muntjac breed all year round and the does can conceive again within days of giving birth. Bucks may fight for access to does but remain unusually tolerant of subordinate males within their vicinity. They will bravely attack anything that threatens their young. Nevertheless, the ‘Bambi’ of the forests and overgrown urban gardens muntjac is seen by some as a wolf in deer’s clothing. Although small, they can also look after themselves.

The bucks have sharp antlers, as well as tusks, which can do serious damage to a fox, dog or human. The British Deer Society state that "unlike other species of deer in Britain, muntjac do not cause significant damage to agricultural or timber crops". However, they are commonly reported to have devoured native woodland plants at a terrifying rate and can leave their mark of destruction on a suburban garden. They also destroy vital bird habitats, which is a concern that Robin Wynde, RSPB Senior Policy Officer explains: "The Reeves’s Muntjac can have a serious impact on the structure of our woodlands, and in turn on the wildlife that relies on them. They browse heavily on the lower level of vegetation of woods, and the removal of plant growth at this level means a loss of habitat for declining birds such as the nightingale.”

Nevertheless, the muntjac should maybe not become a ‘scapedeer’ for all damage. Grey squirrels, (introduced from the US in the late 19th century), cause far greater havoc than the muntjac. There are others, such as foxes and badgers, that also play a significant part in the neighbourhood damage. The most significant impact that muntjac have on human interests is actually in collisions with cars. I doubt that the 15th Duke of Bedford will take responsibility for the mountjacs' villainous forest and garden rampages, nor the increasing number of dented vehicle bumpers, since his predecessor's beloved herd ran riot. Ultimately, it seems that a better understanding of this fascinating species will encourage responsible and humane management of the muntjac colonisation, thereby increasing the chances for all wildlife to more viably co-exist in the future.

Hampton Community Remembrance Service Sunday 8 November 2015 Reverend Sylvia Kinder, Hampton Parish Council (HPC), Hampton Scout Group and Hampton Guides extend a very warm welcome and open invite for everyone to join us for our combined Remembrance Service.

ollowing on from the success of last year’s event, the Hampton Remembrance Service will again be hosted in the Food Court Atrium area of Serpentine Green Centre on Sunday 8 November 2015 commencing at 10.30am To allow all service attendees to actively participate, the plan for this year will incorporate a procession from the

Serpentine Green entrance, adjacent to the Next store at 10.20am. This will enable the Scout and Guide Groups to lead the procession, highlighting their pivotal involvement with the continued recognition of this poignant, annual Act of Remembrance. The itinerary of events is tabulated below to enable everyone to attend the whole service, or to attend any

part of the service which their time will allow. It is hoped that this Act of Remembrance, carried out by the whole of the Hampton Community, will continue to respectfully honour; …

Hampton College Fete The autumn term is well underway at Hampton College with lots of exciting news. The new school year started with a bang as the school celebrated its first 10 Year Anniversary event.

Families that have had a connection with the school since it opened in 2005 joined the event which included stunning performances by current students, a short presentation (Hampton College: The First 10 Years and Where Next) from the Headteacher and tea on the terrace in the sunshine afterwards. On Saturday 3 October, Hampton College Primary Phase held its first ever Autumn Family Fun Day which was a great success! The Hampton Macmillan Fun Run 2015 was, as always, a great event too. Our wonderful Sixth Form buskers entertained the runners and spectators and made wonderful stewards for the day! The school raised lots of money to support Macmillan with activities such as the Sixth Form Coffee Morning, â€˜soak the teacherâ€™ and many traditional games and stalls.

he Year Six’s theme of Ancient Egypt has seen them learn more about the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb, which has become the subject of their class assemblies presented to parents and carers. Their mathematics work has seen them learning about proportionality and how it was important for the Ancient Egyptians. The Year Four children have looked further along the timeline for their theme learning as they focus on the life and times of the Anglo-Saxons. Their learning has included a trip to the West Stow Anglo-Saxon village and open-air museum in Suffolk and the building of their own AngloSaxon inspired village on the school field.

A busy few weeks has also seen most of the Year Five children take to the roads of Hampton to practise and develop their cycling skills as part of the Bikeability programme. All of them also took part in a racket sports festival, hosted by Year Nine sports leaders at Hampton College, and found out more about space sciences and missions at the National Space Centre, Leicester, as part of their “Space: to Infinity and Beyond?” theme. The school will be holding open mornings for parents of prospective reception children who will be starting school in September 2016.

The wildlife of Hampton Have you noticed the majestic Grey Heron which can often be seen by the Holly Walk pond? It’s quite a sight both in the water and in flight. When standing its long neck and dagger-like bill are clear. Herons eat mainly fish, amphibians, reptiles, insects and small mammals and use stealth and speed when hunting.

hey will wait, poised and silent, at the water’s edge, or stand up to their breast in water, hoping unwary prey will approach. When a victim comes within reach, the heron strikes quickly, stabbing down its long, sharp bill to grab the prey tightly. Fish are swallowed whole, head first so that the spines or fins do not get caught in the bird’s throat. Large fish may be brought to land and broken up into smaller pieces before being eaten. As you observe the heron in Holly Walk its solitary feeding habit is obvious and its ability to stand for long periods stalking its prey. Those

of you with garden ponds might not be happy to see one, though, because they have been known to quickly empty a pond full of precious ornamental fish! Herons nest in tall trees, usually with other herons to form a colony. The nest is a large platform, made from twigs and grass, and is usually built by the female. The same nest is used year after year and, therefore, eventually becomes quite large. The eggs are pale blue, numbering 4 to 5, and are laid at the end of March. To feed their hungry brood adult herons may fly up to 18 miles away in order to find food.

Although in some countries herons are shot by fishermen and fish farmers to protect their fish stocks, in Britain they are protected by law and therefore, unlike abroad, their numbers are increasing. So much so that there are now between 4000 and 4500 pairs in Britain. This number can fall, though, during harsh winters when rivers and lakes freeze over and food is impossible to reach. Herons are Britain’s tallest bird with a length of up to 98cm. The oldest authenticated heron lived for 25 years. Lakota (Lover of Nature)

Question: I am an employed ambulance driver on active service and I’ve been told I can claim expenses and reduce my tax – is this true? Answer: Yes you can claim a flat rate deduction of £140, or the actual amount you have spent on specialist clothing for your job. Many employees are not aware that they could be entitled to Flat Rate Expenses. Flat rate deductions are amounts that HMRC have agreed nationally – or sometimes locally if conditions are very different – with trade unions or other bodies. The deductions cover what’s typically spent each year by employees in different trades. Contact us to see if you’re entitled to make a claim.

Personal Savings Allowance (PSA): From April 2016, you won’t have to pay tax on interest received up to £1,000 (if you are a standard rate taxpayer), or £500 if you pay tax at the higher rate. Therefore, to be eligible for this new allowance in 2016-17: l l l l

Your taxable income needs to be less than £42,700 a year to qualify for the £1,000 PSA, or, Your income needs to be between £42,701 and £150,000 to qualify for the £500 PSA.

To facilitate this change, from April 2016 banks and building societies will stop automatically taking the 20% Income Tax from the interest earned on your non-ISA savings accounts. Readers who receive substantial interest on their non-ISA savings should therefore take this into account. For 2016-17 their investment income could create an increase in underpayments in their tax position as they will receive their interest gross with no tax deducted. For example, there will be those who haven’t had to pay tax to HMRC because all their income was taxed at source. These people may be required to pay their tax separately in future. This could particularly affect certain pensioners and the like benefitting from the £5,000 nil “savings rate” of tax applying for 2015-16 only.

Local side Hempsted United ‘Lions’, who play their games from the HCSA in Hampton Hargate, have continued their fine start to their debut season in the Peterborough league.

The youngsters are looking forward to a day at Posh’s ABAX Stadium where they will be flag bearers for a Sky Bet league 1 game. Garden of Remembrance and Contemplation Dear Residents, If you haven’t yet wandered down Braymere Road, you’re in for a big surprise! The land has been greatly cultivated and planted with many new lovely shrubs and bushes kindly donated by Samantha Bannister & Dobbies. The Parish Council is indebted to Dobbies for this generosity. The Tesco Community Team, headed by Kellie Ackroyd and Jonathan Bruton, alongside Samantha from Dobbies, did a grand job with the planting up but I would also like to highlight the hours of work carried out by Cllr. John Amps who marked out the beds, organised the hire of a rotavator and indeed, continues to weed the flower beds. Cllr. Brendan O’ Sullivan, when home from the RAF, regularly weeds and waters the garden too. I co-ordinated

and synchronised the project which felt, at times, like organising a military campaign (meetings, texts and emails)! The photo shows how greatly improved the garden is but work will be ongoing into spring and summer with a pergola and decking to be supplied free from Dobbies. My neighbour, The Hampton Handyman (Kevin Brown) has offered to erect the pergola free of charge as a donation to the community! If any resident can spare the odd 20 minutes to pull out some weeds from time to time, please contact the Parish Council office (email and telephone number on Parish website).

I will be looking forward to seeing many of you at the Remembrance Parade on 8 November, in such lovely new surroundings. I would also like to thank Lorraine Clarke for continuing to donate space to us free of charge for Parish Council articles and news which provides residents with information highlighting work and projects carried out by your Parish Council. O&H Hampton’s residents’ survey from earlier this year confirmed this trend. Four out of five respondents said that they would

recommend the Hamptons to others looking for a place to live and almost two thirds were clear they would consider moving to another home within the Hamptons.

Addressing the shortage Stephen Holbrook calls this the ‘Milton Keynes effect’, where communities being established by large scale developments see home buyers purchasing a new home, staying there for five years or so, then buying the newer homes under development just across the road, no doubt attracted by the thought of maintenance-free living and shinier kitchens and bathrooms. Which, of course, is all well and good for those who can afford to buy in the first place, or who can move fast enough to snap up their dream home. For there is a desperate national shortage of affordable homes. Any homes in fact. Experts say only 47% of the new houses estimated to be needed in England over the past four years have been built. The National Housing Federation estimates about 245,000 new homes are needed each year and the shortages are fuelling a big rise in prices: “We haven’t built enough homes in this country for decades, and if the gap between the number of households forming and the number of new homes being built continues to grow, we are in danger of not being able to house our children,” says a spokesperson.

Insisting on value Price rises are most acute in our region. According to the Office of National Statistics, house prices are rising fastest in the East at over 8%, but this is still somewhat lower than when they reached record levels (11.4%) in the year to December 2014. So, as always, the housing market will be driven by the search for value. Buyers are looking for a location that meets their needs and that presents an attractive, safe and upand-coming area where you get more value for money. Unsurprisingly then, the Hamptons, with its fast travel times into Kings Cross, its green, open spaces, family friendly facilities and welcoming community, is also the perfect location for young families and professional couples looking to leave London and put down new roots. The cost of a family home in North London can start from around £750,000. The same home in the Hamptons probably costs about £275,750. Of course, there will always be those who wish no more homes would be built near them. But the Hamptons is a growing community and is set for rapid expansion yet again over the next few years. The UK population is living longer! In September 2015, the Office of National Statistics published their UK Population Report which reinforces that the UK population is living longer. The following are some interesting facts I have taken from the report:Is age ‘just a number’? We’ve heard that turning 40 is the new 30, and 50 is the new 40 and perceptions on stages in life are definitely changing. The survey also showed that when asked what stage of life they were currently in (given choices), 55% of 60-64 year olds said ‘later life or old age’, but 43% of them said ‘middle adulthood’. For 65-69 year olds, the split was 75% ‘later life’ and 23% ‘middle adulthood’. Revenge Porn – the facts A new law came in this April which enables the prosecution of people who maliciously share sexually explicit pictures of former partners.

evenge porn, which is defined as a distribution of a private sexual image of someone without their consent and with the intention of causing them distress, is now a specific offence under the Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015. Those convicted face a maximum sentence of two years in Prison. The offence includes the sharing of images both online and offline so images posted to social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter will be included, as well as those shared via text messages, email and websites, and of course, the distribution of physical copies of images. We will not go in to the explicit detail here of what type of image

the offence is designed to tackle – use your imagination and look it up if you want. From a divorce lawyer’s point of view, the advice to clients has to be, no matter how embittered you feel about your other half’s behaviour during the relationship breakdown, don’t be tempted to wreak your revenge this way, if you happen to have the material to hand. The first female prosecuted under the new law for posting explicit photos of her ex on Facebook, received a 6 week prison sentence suspended for 18 months. I am sure none of you would be so foolish…

PETS’ PATCH  What is adaptive behaviour? Adaptive behaviour is behaviour which is uncharacteristic for your pet and that when coupled with a change in routine or circumstance tells us that they are struggling to cope with the change. For example, a dog may soil inside the house you’ve just moved into. Indoor toileting could indicate a lack of training or a medical problem, but if they are going in a house you’ve just moved into, they may actually be trying to tell you they aren’t coping very well with the change. Other changes can be much more subtle and often misattributed to other scenarios; such as lying in odd places, being distant from other members of the household or spending extended periods away from home (cats). Below are some of the signs to look out for which may indicate your pet is struggling to cope:

Just like people, pets have to adjust to changes in family life; such as moving house, the arrival or departure of a member of the family (two or four legged), people coming to stay for the holidays or going into kennels/catteries while the owners are on holiday. Just like us, pets cope in different ways. Some pets, however, don’t cope with these changes well and exhibit what’s called ‘adaptive behaviour’.

 What to do if your pet is exhibiting adaptive behaviour Take them to see your vet. They will ask you some questions about your pet, perform a physical examination and possibly take blood and urine samples to rule out any medical causes for the behaviour you describe. They will then be able to advise you on management options based on their findings. If no physical cause is found they can then concentrate on helping your pet cope with their circumstances through behavioural advice, aids, feed supplements and/or medication. Referral to a behaviourist may also be recommended.
