MEET YOUR LOCAL COUNCILLORS

Cllr Dianne Dearden I am proud to be a Parish Councillor in Hampton, a post I have held since being co-opted in March 2017

M

y name is Dianne Dearden, I was born in Morecambe, Lancashire but I have lived in several places around the UK until finally retiring from the Civil Service in 2012. I have three, adult children and nine grandchildren. I moved from Bolton to live in Hampton to be nearer family. I love living here and never tire of walking around the lakes and seeing the wildlife, especially

4

watching the swans and their cygnets, ducks and ducklings, geese and goslings, growing into adults. There is a great community feel in Hampton, especially when it comes to special events like VE Day and the Queens 90th Birthday celebrations. I was lucky to be one of a team organising local events. Hampton residents are very supportive and friendly and I like nothing better than

stopping for a chat whilst out walking. I enjoy the green wheel, it's a safe way to cycle round Hampton and surrounding areas reaching ferry meadows and all the way to Peterborough and beyond. Hampton is a great place to keep fit, I regularly use the gym, play badminton twice a week and table tennis on a Tuesday evening. I co-organise the Hampton Seniors Social

Club; we meet every Wednesday afternoon in the Hampton Vale Community Centre. Hampton Seniors also have a community allotment in Vale, consisting of two raised beds and all of our produce is given away to people at CSK Church. I volunteer two mornings a week in Chimes coffee shop, stop by to say hello. If there is anything the Parish Council can help you with, please do get in touch.

Christ the Servant King the Parish Church of Hampton Instant photos. Instant news. Instant messaging. We live in a world of the instant. Sometimes, that’s good. Wherever we are in the world, we can reach each other more quickly than ever before. I heard recently that a couple caught up in a traffic jam on the A14, received live travel updates about the hold-up from their daughter in Australia! But sometimes, ironically, it can leave us feeling a little disconnected - or even lonely. Connection with God in prayer is instant too. But prayer takes us deeper than any social media conversation. God wants us to talk to him and he wants to speak to us - just as we would in any friendship. That’s where good relationships start - and more importantly - continue. So, that’s why we're passionate about prayer at CSK church. This month, we’re joining in with the Archbishop of Canterbury’s global prayer movement, ‘Thy Kingdom

Come’, between 25th May and 4th June. We always have a prayer space available in church any time that Chimes coffee shop is open (9-4 Tues-Sat), but on Tuesday 30 May, we are playing our part in this prayer movement, from 9am to 9pm. We will have a range of ways to engage with prayer, for both children and adults, from the energetic to the reflective, from the creative to the edible. Do join us at any point in the day and stay for as long or short a time as you wish. Needless to say, we’d also be delighted to pray for you at any time of the year. If there’s something on your mind, do email us at office@hamptonchurch. co.uk or put a written request through our letter box at church. Every Blessing, Sylvia

Local girls football Yaxley girls Fc have had a great season so far and it isn’t quite over. We have four teams in the S-Tech Cambridgeshire league and all our teams will finish in the top half of their leagues, with two teams aiming for the top spot. On the 25 of March the U14’s beat our U13’s in the semi-final of the County cup. It’s a great achievement to have both teams reach the semi-finals, congratulations to the U14’s who are now in the final. We are looking forward to the next season and are looking for

new players and new coaches for our ever expanding club, which can accommodate girls aged between 5 and 15.

If you would like any further details please contact us at yaxleygirlsfc@hotmail.com

The Seniors' plans for our day trip are progressing nicely, our destination this summer is Sheringham via Holt, taking the short train ride to Sheringham - watch this space for further details. Last summer we visited the Houses of Parliament, such an amazing place to visit, so amazing we have decided to repeat the experience. I'm sure it will be just as good a second time round. Now we are getting closer to summer, I have been spending

more time on our allotment; both raised beds have been dug over and well rotted manure applied; little gem lettuce (kindly donated by my neighbour) are already planted. Seeds sown in pots are ready for planting out when I'm sure we are frost-free. Busy summer ahead, all good fun.

names when you bought it should have gone through the different options with you and created a trust deed if required. If only one of you is the legal owner, you have a whole set of other potential problems. Despite the huge implications of the outcomes of the different property ownership structures, the survey revealed that only 33% were given professional advice when purchasing their current home. This could make the difference in terms of thousands of pounds to either one of you, if the relationship breaks down. Whatever your circumstances - if you are living together and especially if you have children - a cohabitation agreement is essential as an insurance against a possible split. This is because increasing numbers of people cohabit, rather than marry, but as previously stated in this column and elsewhere, “THEY DO NOT HAVE THE SAME LEGAL RIGHTS AS THEIR MARRIED COUNTERPARTS”. YouGov has recently completed a survey of more than 1,000 cohabiting couples across the UK. 35% either believe they have the same rights as married couples, or didn’t know. 76% had not heard of cohabitation agreements and only 2% had a cohabitation agreement in place. 35% were unaware if the property they owned together was either beneficial joint tenants or tenants in common. In association with

EXPLORING NATURE IN THE HAMPTONS Whether it’s rain or shine, the Hamptons are the place to be for nature. With more than 1,200 acres of green space, Hampton residents have an abundance of opportunities to get out of the house and explore the great outdoors.

A

couple of protected areas are entirely inaccessible, such as the Kingston Park Nature Reserve, just south of the Parkway, which is a carefully monitored habitat for Great Crested Newts and also the Fletton Lakes Nature Reserve – although you can get a view across the latter from a viewing platform at the Ikea Distribution Centre. The Fletton Lakes reserve has winter habitats for many species; ponds and brownfield land set aside to promote biodiversity. It is possible to walk along the west side of the site, but the east side of the lake (near the overhead power lines) is private property.

Hampton Nature Reserve Once upon a time, in the Jurassic Age, the Hamptons was a tropical sea. Fossils that have been found at Hampton Nature Reserve led to its designation as a Regionally Important Geological Site (RIGS) in the Peterborough Geology Audit.

Hampton Nature Reserve is also a natural habitat for Europe’s largest population of Great Crested Newts, making it a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Spanning over 300 acres, with more than 300 ponds, it also provides a habitat for at least 27 butterfly species, 18 species of dragonfly and a staggering 120 species of water beetle. Due to its SSSI status, the Nature Reserve isn’t open to the general public, but that doesn’t mean it’s completely off bounds. To protect this rare wildlife, national charity Froglife manages Hampton Nature Reserve. Froglife works alongside O&H Hampton, the Heritage Lottery Fund and Natural England, to maintain the area and carry out interesting research studies. Through Froglife, you can access Hampton Nature Reserve either as a volunteer or through one of their many organised events. This way you’re not at

risk of disturbing or causing any damage to the wildlife and you can learn a great deal from the experts.

Stillwell’s Nature Reserve A smaller nature reserve is open to the general public at Stillwell’s Lake, located just off the A15, north of the Parkway. You’ll also find access from Drakes Avenue, and a link goes out to the Ortons. Over a 25 acre site, there are multiple walkways and cycle routes, geocaching spots, a central lake (very popular with fishermen) and areas of open space for reptiles and other wildlife.

out for squirrels, wood mice, woodpeckers, lizards, newts, bats and much more. Crown Lakes Country Park is open to all to enjoy. You are welcome to play games, have a picnic, bring your bike, go for a walk or even go for a horse ride down the dedicated bridleways. All we ask is you respect the Countryside Code. Crown Lakes spans the equivalent of 88 football pitches, so there’s plenty of space for friends and family. Local groups are welcome to use the space too. Just contact the O&H Hampton team to set something up.

Crown Lakes Country Park How can I find out more? Of course, there’s full public access to this lovely park. Home to more than 75,000 trees and shrubs and a vast population of animals, birds, insects and plant life; there’s plenty to explore at Crown Lakes Country Park. Look

Lakota (Lover of Nature)

of Hampton

In February, I wrote about one of the smallest British birds. Walking by Serpentine Lake recently, I noticed one of the largest and often one of the noisiest - the magpie. And indeed, I saw another two in the bushes around James’s lake.

T

heir very vocal ‘chacker, chacker’ could be heard resounding over the lakes. Magpies being frequently seen around Hampton, is due to the fact that the habitat is appealing to them and that the numbers of magpies nationally has quadrupled in the past 35 years. There has been a suggestion that one reason for the increase could be the plentiful amount of road kill carrion, seen today by the side and on our roads. But magpies are not just meat eaters, they actually have quite a varied diet: insects, seeds, grains, berries and fruit, are also part of their menu. Part of the crow family, magpies are found all over England, Wales and Ireland, but less so in Scotland. They don’t migrate and are in fact, rarely found more than 10km from where they were hatched. They build their nest in trees, but have been known to build ones on the ground if they are breeding in a treeless landscape. Magpies are considered to be intelligent creatures and have a reputation for stealing bright, shiny objects. However, recent research seems to have disproved this. Scientists from the Centre for Research in Animal Behaviour could not find any

evidence for this so far, but their research continues. Magpies have, however, always been surrounded by superstition. There are many versions of this well-known rhyme which refers to the magpie: One for sorrow, two for joy. Three for a girl, four for a boy. Five for silver, six for gold. Seven for a secret, never to be told. Eight for a wish, nine for a kiss. Ten for a bird that's best to miss. There was also an old rural tradition of raising one’s hat to a magpie. With some apparently saying, “Good morning, Mr. Magpie. How is your lady wife today?’; acknowledging the part of the rhyme that says ‘Two for joy’ and no doubt trying to keep on its good side! It seems that not everyone has had a positive view of the magpie, with some believing that seeing one on its own is bad luck, ‘One for sorrow,' and that they raid other bird’s nests. Suggestions for avoiding the bad luck were flapping your arms like wings and cawing to imitate the magpie’s missing mate, or even spitting three times over your shoulder! There could be some strange behaviour to be seen around Hampton, but please not on the footpaths!

Of slugs and snails

Lettuces are coming forth in the vegetable plot and hostas in the flower garden - just two plants that really show the damage of slugs and snails, so often voted gardeners number one pest.

O

nce more, we start a year following a mild, wet winter, which means slug and snail populations will be heaving, as less time has been spent in hibernation - more time breeding and feeding. This is a time when traditionally, gardeners reach for slug pellets of various propriety varieties, but it's the use of these deathly toxins which is, in fact, exasperating the problems we face in our gardens. Yes, these pellets kill slugs and snails, but they also kill thrushes, frogs, toads, hedgehogs and ground beetles - the natural scourge of the slug population. It is best to resort to other methods to control these pests, especially since not all are indeed pests, for instance, the leopard slug is known for a diet of other slugs and thus, a welcome visitor to our gardens, whilst the vast majority of these animals feed not on new growth, but decaying old vegetation helping to keep our gardens neat, tidy and well fertilized. Slugs and snails hate to cross copper, as it's high conductivity disturbs them to the extent that

they shall not pass. A ring of copper tape around any points where slugs enter a house, will give you slug free indoors, whilst ringing key plants and/or pots again, affords great protection without poisoning the predators. As well as hating to cross copper, slugs and snails dislike rough surfaces, such as: sharp sand and ground glass, both of which make effective barriers, though of course they will need replacing after heavy rainfall. Another successful prevention is companion planting, as certain plants are seen as highly unattractive to slugs such as: fuchsias and aquilegias or, of course, sacrificial planting - where you add in cheap delicacy plants such as: nasturtiums as sacrificial lambs to protect your prize plants. By avoiding toxic chemicals, a healthy population of predators should thrive in your garden and help reach a symbiotic balance, so that you will be able to enjoy the abundance of local wildlife, alongside the taste of home produce and beauty of your prized flowers.

Laser hair removal at The Bodylaser Clinic

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

Laser hair removal provides the most effective, long term way of removing unwanted hair on the face and body. The treatment safely eliminates hundreds of hair follicles instantly. Following a course of treatment, you can expect to be hair free in the treated area.

B

ody hair was probably important for warmth in prehistoric times and as a result, it got passed down in our genes to the present day. Today, many people prefer to be hair free and are looking for a permanent solution. Laser hair removal was first studied more than 20 years ago. Initially, the treatment could only be performed on pale skin, but over the years, the technology advanced and today all skin types can be safely treated if high quality lasers are used. A course of laser treatment usually requires six to eight treatments, at four to eight week intervals.

BodyLaser Clinics has more than 13 years experience of providing high quality laser hair removal treatment in Cambridge and Peterborough. Since the beginning, they have always insisted on using genuine lasers for the treatment, rather than the cheaper Pulsed Light devices (IPL or MPL). Lasers are chosen based on their effectiveness, rather than for their low price. To further ensure safety, the treatment is performed by Registered Nurses instead of by beauticians. Nurses are governed by a code of ethics, which puts the client’s wellbeing first. Honest and truthful advice is paramount at all times.

EDUC ATION Hargate Primary

Another busy month goes by at Hampton Hargate Primary School! Well done to everyone who took part in our Big Pedal fortnight. In school winners were 5WP! In fundraising news, thank you to everyone who generously donated to Comic Relief, we raised a fantastic £593!!! In other news, well done to our fabulous Year 5 children for their recent performance of Snow White. The children worked their socks off and truly were the stars of the show!! Thank you to the Year 5 team and to Sandy for making the amazing costumes. Meanwhile, Year 3 and 4 children

enjoyed taking part in a Roman Day recently. It was a fantastic end to their Romans topic and saw many of the children dressing up in traditional Roman clothing. During the day, the children made catapults, Roman sandals and designed and made mosaics. And finally, green fingered pupils at Hampton Hargate have been given a helping hand from CALA Homes. The house builder provided our school with a donation of gardening equipment and accessories in

support of National Gardening Week. As well as spades, trowels, rakes, watering cans and gloves; we also received an insect sculpture hotel and wildlife attracting seeds. Miss Porter said: ―We are thrilled with this kind donation from CALA Homes, which is a great way to get the children more involved in gardening. This new equipment will help get the children engaged with the school gardens as well as create a more attractive environment for everyone to enjoy.

Little Acorns Hampton College (Secondary Phase) I am incredibly impressed and proud of the attitude and achievements of our students throughout this busy half term. After reading this bumper edition of the newsletter, I am sure you will too. Little shop of horrors One highlight was clearly Hampton College’s outstanding production of ‘The Little Shop of Horrors’. Following months of auditions and rehearsals, the three night run proved to be an absolute triumph, with performances of the highest order, worthy of critical acclaim. The set was a sight to behold and required expert puppeteering skills from students hidden within the plants. The response from all who came to enjoy the show was overwhelmingly positive and justifiably so. We are all extremely grateful to the staff and students whose team work, dedication and effort, culminated in such a wonderful show. We look forward to next year’s performance with anticipation…

The final push Our examination students are working incredibly hard in preparation for their final exams. Leading on from the assembly given to Year 11 earlier in the term, over 120 people attended our Year 11 ‘Revision Evening’. Students and parents were given advice and guidance regarding: revision tips and learning techniques, where to find helpful resources, particularly for English, Maths and Science and how to maintain physical and emotional health and wellbeing during this stressful time, all interspersed with motivational messages. The response was so positive that

we will repeat the session in school for students who were not able to attend. This is just one of many planned activities to support our students as the exams approach, including revision sessions after school, at lunchtime and during the holidays. Also, our Collapsed Day saw Year 11 focus on Maths and Year 10 on English, with the help of poet Mark Grist, whose poetry slam saw students perform their own work to their peers. The standard was incredible! I am extremely grateful to the staff for giving their time so freely to help ensure our students achieve.

Buckingham palace Our Young Tycoons enjoyed their day at Buckingham Palace, where they met the Duke of York and Peter Jones and came runners up in the National Tycoons in Schools competition. We say farewell and wish the very best of luck to Mrs Pateman, Mrs Peake, Miss Comar, Miss Warner, Miss Masaraure, Mrs Nicholls and Ms Stephenson, who leave us this term. Ms Stephenson leaves after 12 years’ service at Hampton College as our SENCO and is moving to a new role in Lincolnshire. We thank them all for their dedication and service to the young people at Hampton College. After such a busy term may I wish everyone an enjoyable and restful Easter break. Mr Gilligan

We have been enjoying the nice weather at Little Acorns; the pre-school are enjoying looking after the fruits and vegetables which they have planted in the back garden. We have also been learning about how tadpoles grow into frogs and looking at other life cycles.

The Baby unit have also enjoyed being out in the garden, they are enjoying exploring different sensory play and getting messy. The children have enjoyed celebrating Easter, we have made Easter egg pictures to decorate the nursery and take home for our families. We also had great

fun searching for all the Easter eggs in the garden left by the Easter Bunny! We are now taking bookings for babies up to pre-school age to start with us from September. From September 2017, we will be offering 30 hours funding for eligible 3 year olds.

For more information or to book a visit to see the nursery contact us on littleacorns.daynursery@yahoo.co.uk or 01733 244000.

Hampton Tiddlers Hampton Tiddlers is a stay and play group for parents/carers with children aged 0-5 years. Run solely by a group of committed volunteers based in Serpentine Green Community room; sessions are on Mondays 10am-12pm and from May Fridays 11am-1pm also. We have craft activities, healthy snacks for children and refreshments for parents/carers. It is a drop-in group, however, we occasionally organise special activities, which are very popular and need to be booked in advance. One such activity was our Mother’s Day Tea. We celebrated

this day with scones, cream and strawberries. We are grateful to Tesco for providing the scones for this event. We would also like to thank Sam (Events and Community Champ. Dobbies Ptbr) for the wonderful flowers she sent on Mother’s Day. We do many planting sessions with Dobbies, which is great fun for all. To find out more about our activities, visit our Hampton Tiddlers Facebook page. You can also follow us on twitter @Hamptontiddlers1.

Finally, as we are a volunteer run group, we are always in need of volunteers. If this is something you are interested in and would like to join our dynamic, dedicated group of volunteers, please e-mail hamptontiddlers@gmail.com or call 07546747703.

Do you need help to neuter your cat? Are you a cat lover? Have you acted on impulse and taken on a cat that you've seen advertised on social media badly in need of a new home, or from a friend who can't keep it any longer? Your heart may have got the better of you and not being able to bear the thought of this poor cat being homeless, you're off to collect your new family addition. You probably think, ‘well, it doesn't cost much to feed a cat', but I often wonder whether people would think twice before buying or taking on a new pet, if they stopped to consider the animal’s average life expectancy and calculated the real cost of responsible pet ownership. We see and hear all too often that once the new pet arrives, sadly so do the problems, an expense that many can ill afford and haven't taken out pet insurance. So, if you’ve made a new addition to your family by getting a cat or kitten, you will need to make sure that you’re not going to land yourself with a whole litter of kittens. Neutering is one of the most important things you should do for your cat’s long term health and welfare. There are many reasons why you should neuter your cat. Un-neutered cats wander and are more likely to be involved in road accidents, male cats can become more territorial when not neutered and this leads to fighting (potential risk of FIV disease) and spraying. Cats Protection offer an assisted financial neutering help scheme. Call us on 0345 371 2750 to find out more. Registered charity 203644

MONEYMATTERS

by Pete Bird, Bird & Co Certified Public Accountants

Mandatory digital record keeping and reporting for businesses will be phased in from April 2018. Unincorporated businesses with turnovers above the VAT threshold will be the first to make quarterly reports. Making Tax Digital (MTD) aims to create one digital account for each taxpayer incorporating all of your taxes. Quarterly filing obligations will be imposed for businesses and landlords, with a view to enabling you to track your business transactions as and when they occur. At present, there is no plans to change the tax payment dates, although a voluntary ‘pay as you go’ system will be introduced. From April 2018 unincorporated businesses (self-employed, sole traders and partnerships) and landlords with annual turnover above the VAT threshold (currently £85,000) will be required to keep digital records and send HMRC quarterly updates. From April 2019, unincorporated businesses and landlords with turnover below the VAT threshold will need to comply with the new rules. All incorporated businesses and landlords (limited companies) will be required to meet the MTD filing requirements from April 2020. Those with an annual turnover of less than £10,000 will be exempt from digital record keeping and quarterly updates unless they choose to enrol. If your accounting year end is 5 April, your turnover is over £85,000, your first quarterly update will be for the period 6 April 2018 to 5 July 2018. However, if your year end is 31 March, your first quarterly update will therefore be from 1 April 2019 to 30 June 2019, a delay of one year. At the moment as we understand the position, after four quarterly updates have been submitted, there is a period of 10 months for the reconciliation of end of year accounts and final submission of any adjustments or further claims necessary. We believe that, for most clients, MTD will be a positive transition, which should simplify reporting, making taxation more efficient and accurate through the use of digital tax accounts – we just have to get over the transition period. How we manage and budget for this change will depend on the software available, and we will be working closely with our clients to ensure a smooth transition.

This local nature reserve was once a quarry for brick clay and 'borrow' material used to build the local railway. The abandoned pits filled with water, providing a haven for the wildlife that was forced into the area as the surrounding fenland was drained and ploughed.
