The deadline for our June 2015 issue is 15 May.

Welcome to the May issue of the Hampton Gazette. I can’t believe it’s May already; 2015 seems to be passing by very quickly. I hope you are all enjoying the glorious spring weather we have been having. It’s so lovely seeing people out and about enjoying Hampton. As usual in this issue we have news from the Hampton WI, CSK and details of the next parish council meeting. ‘Hampton’s got Talent’ is back – so if you or your children do anything exciting, then take a photo and send it this way. Don’t forget to mention the Gazette when responding to any of our advertisers as without them we couldn’t bring you the magazine. Until next month.

It looks like everyone enjoyed the half term, dads were out washing their cars as the little ones helped. When I say helped I mean soaked their dads with the hose. The only thing with a few of our cars is where they are parked, as a mum myself I find it difficult to get by on the path with a pram or buggy if they are parked too far on the path. It would be really helpful if we could consider pedestrians when parking your cars.

As we can all see the colour of the Hampton has really changed! We have beautiful yellow daffodils, the sky is as blue as the bluebells, lush green grass even the blushing blossom trees have come into bloom. Not only have the colour changed but the noises too, the birds are gracing us with their sweet songs especially at dusk. COMMUNITY NEWS by Lakota (Lover of Nature)

The Goldcrest

Obviously it was a bird, but a very small one, that I observed flitting around in a bush in Hampton Vale. Standing still for a moment, so as not to scare it away, I watched the small creature hop lightly from one branch to another within the bush. Creeping forward towards it I caught sight of a head with a flash of yellow. It was too large to be a greenfinch. Closer still, I realised it was a beautiful goldcrest.

The goldcrest is apparently quite widespread across the whole of the UK but this is the first time I have seen one. They are greyish-green in colour, with a pale belly and a black and yellow stripe on their heads. Together with the firecrest they are the UK’s smallest bird, and not the wren as is commonly thought. The goldcrest eats tiny morsels such as spiders, moth eggs and other small insects. Interestingly they build their nests at the top of some of the tallest trees and make them from moss, lichens and spiders’ webs, and then line them with feathers. Their eggs are minute, only 14mm by 11mm! Goldcrests rarely visit garden bird tables, but with good observation and stealth they are obviously here to be seen in Hampton.

‘Over half of people over 65 have been targeted by fraudsters’ say Age UK by Eileen Le Voi

PROPERTY MANAGEMENT & LETTINGS

07749 115968 info@agtpml.co.uk

www.agtpml.co.uk

A new Age UK survey has found that 53% of older people (aged 65+) believe they have been targeted by fraudsters. While many do not respond, of those who do, 70% of all age groups said that they had personally lost money. The survey of over 1,000 people by Age UK also revealed that a third of older people who responded to a scam may have lost £1,000 or more.

Where learning’s a ball

Half of those over 65 said that they had received a phone call, text or letter that they believe to have been part of a scam and over 60 percent of them said that they hadn’t reported it. The report from Age UK highlights the tactics used by fraudsters, including befriending or ‘grooming’ potential victims and isolating them from friends and family, the use of seemingly professional documentation and official-looking websites, impersonating a bank or the police and even threats and intimidation. With the new pension freedoms that came into force this April, the Charity is warning that people over 55, who will now have access to large pots of pension savings, are likely to be increasingly targeted by fraudsters carrying out a whole range of scams seeking to exploit people’s interest in the change in the law, for example by enticing them to move their cash into bogus, unregulated investments or other forms of scams. The Charity warns that being the victim of a scam can have serious consequences for people’s physical and mental health, as well as their relationships and finances. Some victims’ health deteriorates quickly after a scam and in the worst cases has even resulted in older people losing their independence and needing residential care. Age UK is currently working with Action Fraud as well as other agencies to increase awareness of fraud and cyber crime and the levels of sophistication involved, so that people feel equipped to challenge and report it.

To report a fraud and receive a police crime reference number, call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or go to www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud

Hampton Duke of Edinburgh Award Team The Hampton Duke of Edinburgh Award Team, delivered by Peterborough Open Awards Centre and Cambridgeshire Constabulary staff, have been extremely busy in recent weeks. The Bronze and Silver teams led a practice expedition in the Nene Valley area of Peterborough, taking in some interesting history, wildlife and flora and fauna. The practice is the first stage for the expeditions, where teams hone in on navigation, team working and camp craft skills. The next expedition is the assessment. Bronze will take place in Rutland and for Silver, their assessed expedition will be in the Peak District, in May and August. Volunteers Required – POAC is looking for volunteers to help run the weekly sessions. We deliver from the Tesco Community Room, Serpentine Green each Wednesday in school term times from 1700-1800. Roles include helping individuals record their updates on the online system, help with expedition planning, first aid scenarios, camp and cooking skills and the potential for expedition trips. If you would like more information on us and the DofE visit www.poac.uk.com and www.dofe.org and get in touch with Matt via email: matt.lauch@gmail.com

Local man urges everyone to get active this May for cancer support charity Hampton resident is taking on a daily 10km challenge this May to raise money for a cancer support charity. Jamie Toms, 18, will be running 10km a day as part of Dimbleby Cancer Care’s Every Day in May sports challenge, which has been organised by fitnaturally Ltd, who are based in StiltonDimbleby Cancer Care was set up in 1966 in memory of broadcaster Richard Dimbleby. It gives practical and psychological support to people living with cancer and to their families and carers.

Jamie said: I’m mentored on the path to a career in the fitness industry by Sally Pinnegar who owns fitnaturally and we were talking one day about the challenge and I decided to sign up. I decided to choose running as my solo activity as I felt up for a challenge which incorporated something I love doing with something that’ll make a difference. I’ve not been affected by cancer but would love to be a factor in evening the odds in the fight.”

Christ the Servant King

The Parish Church of Hampton At CSK Church we love surprises and new beginnings. On Easter Saturday Elana Kelly and Carl Lenox invited their family and friends to their daughter Reagan’s baptism service. However, it wasn’t a usual baptism service. When the Wedding March was played and Elana walked down the aisle on the arm of her Father, visiting from Jamaica, the guests quickly realised they were there to witness more than a baptism. Elana and Carl held their reception in the church hall afterwards and it was a wonderful celebration of love: their love for one another, their love for Reagan, and God’s amazing love for them. Reagan will be one of the first children to join in the fun at our new groups that will be starting in May. If you look after a baby under 18 months old and/or children under the age of five, we’d love to meet you and serve you refreshments and enjoy spending time together, making new friends. When Jesus shared his last supper with his disciples, he set an example of serving.

We try to follow the example of Jesus, in the way we serve our church and community, and look forward to serving you at one of our ‘Ark’ groups.

Hampton WI We had a fantastic first meeting in our new home at CSK Church last month and hopefully this will be our last move for a very long time. The hall is light, spacious and wonderfully bright and was perfect for our meeting. We enjoyed hearing about the history and uses of Calligraphy from our speakers, who are all members of the Peterborough Scribes Society, and saw many pieces of their work. The types of scripts and styles of lettering were so varied and ranged from simple to incredibly ornate and decorative. My knowledge of Calligraphy was so limited but we discovered that it's a very beautiful written form of art. We couldn't wait to have a go ourselves and I think this is something else our members will want to try again. I know some of you found our wonderfully handcrafted little yellow ducks last weekend following our "Duck Bomb" around Hampton. Whilst it was so lovely to see people enjoy their little ducks, their message is a serious one about Organ Donation and hopefully will have encouraged many of you to talk about the issue with particular emphasis on making your wishes clear to family and friends. If so, the little ducks did their job! We have another brilliant meeting to look forward to in May and it would be fantastic to some yet more new faces. Please come along, a warm welcome awaits you.

‘Handmade’ on tour

‘Handmade for You’ is a regular, monthly event, offering an array of locally-produced handicrafts.

Previously based at the beautiful St John’s Church in Cathedral Square, the organisers have now taken these popular craft events on tour. They’ll be setting up at various locations in Peterborough throughout the year, and invite you to come and experience their handmade ‘roadshow’ for yourself! There are new stalls at each event, but regulars include stunning jewellery, beautiful knitted and crocheted accessories, fabulous felting, wonderful woodturning and gorgeous, handmade scented candles, spa sets, soft furnishings and cards. Local artists often sell their work here, too. Once you’ve shopped till you’ve dropped, you can enjoy a slice of homemade cake and a cuppa in the Handmade Café, and select a gift-box of delicious designer cupcakes for yourself or someone special. By shopping at these events you’re buying something unique and lovingly created to give as a gift, but you’ll also be supporting local artisans. So, what are you waiting for? Make a note in your diary of the remaining dates and venues for 2015!

HOME & GARDEN

The garden is bursting into life! Gardens tend to look their best in late spring; the grass is green, the flowers are at their prettiest and the trees look fresh. The whole landscape is full of promise with the delicate beauty of spring blossom and late flowering bulbs. Gardeners start to reap the rewards of their early labours and continue to turn their thoughts to maximising crops, shrubs and flowers so it is never too late to start planning and carrying out garden tasks. To whet your appetite how about planting some easy salad crops or herbs that will give good results quickly? Chives, parsley, mint and thyme can be successfully grown in pots and provide fresh herbs through the growing year. Planted near the kitchen nothing could be easier to grab and add extra flavour to a dish. Lettuce and rocket provide continuous flavoursome additions to your salads and if planted a few seeds at a time, throughout spring and summer, will keep outdoing anything you get in the shops until autumn.

14 Hampton Gazette May 15.indd 14

For versatility containers provide speedy transformation in any season but especially in spring when they can be planted with beautiful bulbs or speedy herbaceous plant s for a colourful effect. Remembering to water and feed them regularly will reward you with cheerful displays all summer and they can be moved around the garden for maximum effect. When summer arrives crops are ready to harvest, flowers are blooming and it’s generally sunny and hot. This is the time to enjoy the garden but also remember some basic things- water you plants and containers ideally in the morning or at night; don’t forget to weed and keep an eye out for and remove garden pests.

Most importantly, enjoy your garden and all it can offer!

FAMILY LAW ADVICE

Reaching an amicable divorce agreement

Press reports a while ago suggested the actress and Coldplay frontman were splitting their assets equally and will also share custody of their children Apple and Moses. Martin was expected to spend more time in the US in order to be able to see his children, while Paltrow was expected to remain in the family home is Los Angeles. The reports on this case hinted at a separating couple putting their differences aside in order to reach the best outcome not only for themselves, but also more importantly for their children.

Mummy Maids

Not only do we provide domestic household cleaning, but we do all those daily chores that build up too... making your life easier at the end of a hard day.

Alternative dispute resolution approaches such as Mediation and Collaborative Law can help in this regard, as they allow parties to sit down with trained professionals who can assist them in making key decisions about finances and contact to children in a constructive way. For many, divorce often equals costly and time consuming Court battles and while some couples may be left with little option but to go down that route, there are alternatives for those who are in a position to work together.

• Deep cleans • Light cleans • Regular service or a ‘one off ’ • Take away laundry and ironing service

Divorce is an emotionally difficult time for everyone involved including the children and we would always encourage couples to consider all options when it comes to formalising their separation, with an emphasis on ensuring that they work together.

Your guide to

Living in Hampton

Where you can find out about all of this in one place? 

Our Hampton interactive map http://www.ohhampton. co.uk/# now boasts more than 160 separate entries including community groups, events, health, education, new homes and the great outdoors. For those of you who’ve yet to discover it, or want to add your own activities, business or interests to the map, here’s a whistlestop tour of some of what the map has to offer: 

Which are the best children’s play parks?

You’ll find no fewer than 16 places for children of all ages to play marked in the map’s ‘Community Life’ section. Each pin gives details of equipment, precise location, and what age it’s suitable for.

Is anything going on that I can take visitors to this week? 

Our new ‘Events’ section allows anyone organising an event for the Hampton community to promote it to others free of charge by creating a pin. 

I’m new to the area. What clubs can I join?

Click on ‘Clubs and activities’ and take your pick from football to Froglife, walking to Women’s Institute. 

Can I fish in Hampton’s lakes?

The ‘Hampton outdoors’ section tells you everything you need to know about using Hampton’s parks and open spaces for walking, leisure - and fishing.

Are there any hairdressers/ironing services/ driving schools/photographers on Hampton? 

Why not support local business on Hampton by using the services listed in ‘Local businesses’, ‘Shopping’ and ‘Health and well-being?

My friends are moving to Hampton and want to know about the local schools. 

For an overview of education facilities on Hampton, point them to the ‘Education and childcare’ section, where they can hear from the students at Hampton Hargate Primary, read about the ethos at Hampton Vale Primary, and learn more about Hampton College and its primary school.

How do I add my own activity, event or business to the map? 

If you have an idea for a subject you’d like to see featured here let us know by email at info@hamptongazette.co.uk

Adding a pin takes only a few moment. Just go to www. ohhampton.co.uk , click on the interactive map, and then on the ‘add a pin’ button. There are full instructions to guide you through a few simple steps.

PET CARE

Adventure Trails with Waggy Tails

See our advert in handy numbers on Page 34

Adventure Trails with Waggy Tails is my dog walking and pet visiting business I’m bringing to Hampton and the surrounding areas. I understand the importance of walking dogs and making sure they maintain a healthy active lifestyle and knowing the responsibilities you have when owning a dog but of course sometimes it can be hard to find the time due to work/illness, etc to give your pet the exercise as well as the interaction they need which has encouraged me to pursue this career path.

Whether your dog needs just a one-off walk, extra exercise over the weekend, short term service, or a regular walk, I will be happy to help you. I offer a one to one service for your dog/dogs and I can guarantee your dog will have a fun time on their Adventure Trails with me.

PET CARE

Keeping the

With the warmer weather inviting us outside, this is a great time to have fun with your dog, but the transition from spring to summer requires some adjustments for dogs and owners alike, so here are in your dog’s step some things to take into consideration now that spring has sprung.

SPRING

A bird in the paw Spring heralds the return of the songbirds, and hatching eggs throughout the neighborhood and nearby parks. For these birds and their fledglings, pets pose a serious threat. Most dogs are not quite as adept at killing birds as cats are, however, they gain great pleasure from the thrill of the chase. Dogs are carnivores, so the ultimate aim is to catch and kill. Training your dog not to attack birds will help. It might sound obvious, but letting your dog near birds when it is hungry can be asking for trouble.

Allergies Just like their owners, dogs can get springtime allergies. Pollen from the first flowering trees, dandelions and tulips, dust, mold and even insects can cause allergic reactions. Canine allergy medicines are effective; your vet can prescribe the safest dose.

Safety in the garden

Vaccinations

Selecting plants that are safe for dogs will go a long way in preventing toxicities from occurring. Keep in mind that some dogs can enjoy digging as much as we do so avoid planting toxic bulbs such as hyacinths, tulips, daffodils and certain lilies. Fertilizers and mulch can be toxic as well so store them in an inaccessible area like a shed when not in use and do not allow your dog in the garden area.

Spring is a good time to check that your dog’s vaccinations are up to date. Your dog is exposed to more infectious diseases during this time of year. Instances of kennel cough can rise in the spring because of increasing dog-to-dog contact.

Mosquitoes Depending on where you live mosquitoes start becoming more active. Generally heartworm preventative medication should be given year round to prevent infection. The cost of heartworm preventative medication is a bargain when compared to how much it costs to treat heartworm disease.

Ticks and fleas Ticks and fleas become more prevalent as well. There are a variety of products available to combat these nuisances, so ask your vet which one is best for your dog. Start early as preventing ticks and fleas from becoming a problem is far easier than dealing with a major flea infestation and get into the habit of regularly checking your dog for ticks.

Facebook “f ” Logo

Bee and wasp stings Dogs are curious. They love to run and chase things including insects, which in some cases protect themselves by stinging the dog. Multiple stings are dangerous. Most of the time, an insect sting is just painful and irritating for your dog. Getting stung several times, or stung inside the mouth or throat, is dangerous and requires a trip to the vet. Watch for allergic reactions. A severe reaction can be caused by a large number of stings or by an allergic reaction. If your dog is having a severe reaction, you need to take the dog to a vet immediately.

Spring cleaning hazards With spring generally comes spring cleaning. Be aware that many household cleaning products are harmful to dogs so follow instructions as posted on the label and store all chemicals out of reach when not in use.

Let Bollywood Tiger tantalise This was an Indian like no other for me. The unique flavour and experience of freshly homemade, rich, and beautiful flavours were all to make for a superb Indian Cuisine. Bollywood Tiger offers a unique experience in the fact that you can almost create your own dish. We all have that certain type of curry we like, we also all have another one, some of us have three, some of us have more, but how about you are able to combine all your favourite types of Indian dishes into one unique dish? At Bollywood Tiger, along with having the traditional menu, they also offer a chance for you to tell the Chef exactly what type of Indian dish and flavours you like, and they will take the liberty to design and cook what they think will suit you!

I had a traditional Korma dish, which was a Korma with added touch of heat and extra flavour. This was a unique dish and gave me the exact type of Indian dish that I like. The ingredients that were used were freshly made. For example, some of the vegetables that are used are grown by Bollywood Tiger themselves at a nearby crop site they have, including the type of vegetables and herbs like Coriander, mint, mustard and spinach at present season. This was an Indian like no other as it offers another unique way of enjoying eating out, and this experience has not been offered anywhere else in Peterborough. So get yourself down to Bollywood Tiger for a tasty Indian Cuisine like no other!

SCHOOLS

Hampton College

Hargate Vale Primary School Living the Anglo-Saxon life, taking to the stage to celebrate a fairytale ball or filming animations inspired by Wallace and Gromit - there’s never an uneventful week at Hampton Vale Primary School. The school’s busy programme of events, visits and special guests to school - designed to enhance the children’s learning experiences - has continued over the past few weeks.

Last Term ended on a high with the smell of warm weather in the air and the Easter Bunny on its way. Over the final weeks students enjoyed many activities arranged for them. The audience tapped their feet to the beat as Tracy Turnblad and friends triumphed over high school bullies, racism, and enemies everywhere of big girls with big hair. Viewers young and old were shimmying in their seats as they enjoyed hit favourites. “The cast were an absolute credit, they worked like stage professionals and kept bringing more energy and focus throughout the rehearsals that led to an amazing performance week.” Collapsed Day on 19 March was a day off timetable for all students giving them the chance to take part in some innovative and excited experiences. The excellent weather has allowed us to complete a good block of teaching in PE including football, our first ever block of Mountain biking and the girls have been developing routines in street and line dance.

In the Foundation Stage, some of the youngest of the school’s children have been enjoying make-believe Journeys Around the World in their learning, focusing particularly on food from various nations including Italy, China and Greece. Supermarket trips have given the children to shop for these products before trying them back at school. It has been the children in Years One and Five who have taken to the stage to present their own productions based on fairytales and on Shakespeare respectively - to the rest of the school and to parents and carers. The recent Year Two learning theme of Nocturnal Animals culminated in a visit to the school by animal experts from the Raptor Foundation - a visit that gave the children a rare opportunity to see at close quarters some of the animals about which they had been learning. History has been the focus of learning themes in both Years Six and Four, with the older children staging their own VE Day-style party to mark the end of their studies of the Second World War. The Year Four children, meanwhile, enjoyed an Anglo-Saxon themed day in school and a visit to West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village in Suffolk, both of which gave them the opportunity to experience firsthand the ancient period of history.

The term ended with a very busy extra-curricular programme with many of the boys football teams playing in finals and semi-finals, girls cricket, Year 7 netball, trampolining, ‘learn to ride’ scheme, boxing and the ‘change for life’ club which is run for our primary children by our Sixth Form students who are working towards becoming Gold sports Ambassadors for the school.

SCHOOLS

Hampton College (Primary)

Silverhill Pre-School

During the spring term, year 2 had a fabulous time reading “George’s Marvellous Medicine” for Book Week. In literacy we wrote instructions and then made a recipe to try out on Granny. The potions sounded so magical that we just had to make them, using our measuring skills to carefully measure the different ingredients. We presented our work in groups using the iPads. Through our topic we have learnt about Peterborough. We learnt about a nurse called Edith Cavell. We were also lucky enough to spend the day at Peterborough museum, learning how to become nurses and the jobs they would have to do. It was a great day and we all dressed up like Victorian medics! We had great fun at our Mother’s Day workshop making a range of arts and crafts. Everyone enjoyed the morning and we created a spring display using our beautiful creations. We were so excited that over 150 family members were able to join us for such an exciting morning and we are very grateful to our PTA for running a hugely successful Cake Sale afterwards. In addition to all this excitement we had a Sports Week where we got to try lots of different activities including yoga, dancing and circus skills. By the end of the week we were all very tired.

The newly opened Silverhill Community Pre-school are about to start the summer term from inside their base at The CSK church in Hampton Centre. Both staff and pupils have been enjoying the recent beautiful weather by getting busy creating wonderful weaving artwork, planting flowers and creating an exciting bug city area in hopes of encouraging more wildlife into their garden. Silverhill Community Pre-school and their Ofsted rated ‘Outstanding’ Vale Community Preschool offer childcare places for children aged 2 years and upwards. If you would like more information about either of these setting please contact Nicole or Cheryl. Email: silverhillpre-school@hotmail.com or valepre-school@hotmail.co.uk

Residents are invited to attend the Annual Parish Meeting Tuesday 19 May 2015 Vale Community Centre 7pm The focus of our meeting this year is our local community and we have invited over twenty local organisations including the Cambridge Constabulary, Safer Peterborough, Family Action, WI, Friday Night (HCSA) Youth Sports, Hampton Seniors, Hargate & Vale allotment groups and the Hampton Duke of Edinburgh Group along to promote their involvement in helping Hampton to be a great place to live. This year we will also have officers from Peterborough City Council to discuss general issues including the 20 is Plenty and Road Adoption. We have invited our City Councillors to hold a surgery within the Meeting room. Please come along and discuss your local issues with them.
