HG Hampton people love the community they live in Take a new television out of the box and it’s fully finished, it will never change. A new community, like Hampton, doesn’t come out of a box and it changes as it grows. As a community led, grassroots party, the Peterborough & Fenland Green Party have met local people, business and community members who would like to see changes in the way we approach and manage local decision making here in the community. We have seen residents come together to form a unique Hampton community spirit to campaign, for example, in raising their concerns with the statutory agencies about road safety and lowering the speed limit to 20mph on Hampton’s residential roads. This community togetherness can hold local agencies and elected councillors to account and make sure residents get clarity and transparency instead of confusing council bureaucracy
when local issues are being decided. The Greens would work proactively with agencies and organisations to support all residents of Hampton. We believe that your local representatives should be your “Community Champions” and that they should be present, accessible and visible within the local community they represent. Hampton people love the community they live in and they cherish the wide open spaces and lakes on their doorstep. The Peterborough & Fenland Green Party want to maintain this and, as the community grows, to protect our lakes and wildlife from local waste and pollution. Hampton Brownies at Star Quest To celebrate 100 years of Brownies, on Saturday 5th April, nearly 400 Brownies (including 19 from Hampton) from the Cambridgeshire West area, took part in a day long celebration called Star Quest at Sawtry Community College. During the day, the Brownies travelled through three time zones collecting stars. There were a wide range of activities on offer in these zones, including traditional games and dance in the past zone, craft activities in the present zone and the girls enjoyed a visit to the planetarium in the future zone. The Brownies shared a community lunch with their units and enjoyed a celebration cake. The Chief Guide, Gill Slocombe, popped in for a visit as well! The Brownies finished off the day by singing Happy Birthday after learning this in sign language. The Brownies all had a fantastic time! Animal Instincts Wherever you go in Hampton you’re sure to see someone out walking their dog, or someone else’s cat doing its own thing. We’re a nation of animal lovers and nowhere more so than here in Hampton. But why? Why do those who love animals voluntarily add to the responsibilities and expenses that crowd already hectic lives? by Quixotic Is the simple answer that pets make people happy? And if so, why? Even though knowing all the work and responsibility involved, even though knowing about having to bear the eventual heartbreak of watching pets grow old, even though knowing that someday the precious pets will be lost altogether - why is the prospect of sharing homes with cats or dogs (or any other animal) so joyous for so many? I suspect that it’s because humans are pack animals, and it is essential to our nature to make others happy. From an evolutionary perspective, it’s been essential to our survival as a species. Some of us experience this need to a greater extent than others, but

the desire to please others is as hard-wired into us as using tools or walking on two legs. Despite all the effort and costs involved, the truth is that it’s so easy to make an animal happy - so much easier than it seems to be to make other people happy. With most pets, when they have their favourite food, their favourite toys, and their favourite person nearby, they’re so deeply happy they practically radiate it. Their happiness isn’t complicated the way human happiness is, with worries about future troubles or what they might have to offer in exchange for the happiness they’ve been given. There’s no concern that showing happiness too openly might make the
happiness go away, indeed the opposite seems to be true. Do pet owners find that there’s a pure, less complicated joy in making an animal happy? Do they experience something deeply fulfilling about knowing that, even in a complicated and often unkind world, they’ve managed to create a pocket of perfect security and bliss for at least one small creature? So, are pets mainly for people who find it difficult to form relationships with other human beings? Are pets just an easy solution to that in-built need to be accepted, to be loved? Are they mainly for those who can’t face being judged and fear rejection an answer to insecurities perhaps?

Wherever there are flowers butterflies can be found.
Hampton Wildlife Most butterflies are enjoying the spring flowers that provide them with nectar for energy. Some have wintered in crevices as adult butterflies to try to protect themselves from the cold, others would have passed the winter months as caterpillars, buried in the earth, or as a chrysalis (pupa), such as the Cabbage White. In all cases, however, they would have been in a form of hibernation, in which all of their bodily functions cease. If you look closely at the wing surfaces of some butterflies you may detect that they are a little battered, with some of the scales having worn off. These ones will probably have been alive since last September, or even August, and will have spent the winter, wings closed, body cold, possibly in a shed, or amongst ivy.
Being cold-blooded creatures, their body heat reflects the temperature which surrounds them. Most butterflies need a body temperature of about 80°F in order to fly. However, the air doesn’t actually need to be this temperature. This is because butterflies use solar energy to increase their body temperature by as much as 20 degrees above the temperatures outside. So, when outdoor temperatures consistently start reaching 60°F or so, butterflies will begin flying. They seek out micro-hotspots in order to be ready for the serious business of tracking down a mate and seeing off rivals. Often these competitions can be seen mid-air in the form of a mini dog fight.
The first butterflies we are likely to see early in the year are those that hibernate in the adult stage; such as the Peacock, Red Admiral and Small Tortoiseshells.
It’s an interesting thought as to where the name ‘butterfly’ came from. There seems to be several theories. One relates to the Old English word ‘buttorfleoge’. Long ago,
many people believed that butterflies were witches who had taken that form and that they stole milk and butter. Another theory is less tied up with folklore; the first butterfly that comes out of hibernation in the spring is usually the male brimstone butterfly and it’s bright yellow, like butter. It’s thought that this name was given to all species of butterfly as the first one that came out was yellow. Yet, another says that the name ‘butterfly’ is a corruption of the word ‘flutterby’. Whatever the reason, there is no doubt that they are beautiful creatures and a joy to behold at this time of year. Three of the most common around Hampton are the Peacock, Cabbage White and Tortoiseshell but, for the more observant, other varieties may well be spotted.

Christ the Servant King, The Parish Church of Hampton
If all goes to plan, towards the end of May, the diggers, the work men in their green jackets and hard hats, the blue containers, cement mixers and generators will all disappear from the grounds of our new church building. The brick path, with the names of many Hampton residents, will have been laid. The building will be completed and the keys handed over to the church. A very exciting day! We have raised over two thirds of the money that we anticipate that we will need to equip the building, so fitting it out will be an ongoing process. If all goes to plan, the building will be dedicated and officially opened in a service on Monday 8th September at 7:30pm. However, we hope that we will be able to start meeting on Sunday mornings in the new building during the summer months, before the fitting out is completed. The plans for a café in our building are ongoing, so we don’t yet have a date for when it will be open. Once we are fully settled in the building, and the building is dedicated, we plan to have an open day, with activities for all the family, so the whole community will be able to come along and have a good look around. HG Annual Parish Meeting Tuesday 20 May 2014 The focus of our meeting this year is our local community and we have invited over twenty local organisations including the Cambridge Constabulary, Vivacity, 20 is Plenty, Froglife, Friday Night (HCSA) Youth Sports, Hampton Seniors, local allotment groups and the Hampton Duke of Edinburgh Group along to promote their involvement in helping Hampton to be a great place to live. Celebrity couple Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin have announced that they are to separate after being married for more than 10 years.
The Hampton DofE Team The Hampton DofE Team have been actively volunteering in the community in recent weeks. Team members are giving their time to help others at a variety of places including, Sue Ryder, Little Miracles, Frog Life and Vale and Hargate Primary schools, to name a few. Members of the Hampton DofE team, who are cooking for their skill section of the award, welcomed Zak from The Brickyard Bakery to a delicious cooking session at the Hampton Vale Community Centre. The recipe was stuffed chicken, wrapped in Parma ham and poached with a tarragon sauce to top. The team were able to learn new skills as Zak guided them through the recipe. Harriet who was pleased with the outcome of her food said, “I’m going to take mine home for my parents to try.” The team, although nervous about the recipe, found it to be far easier than first expected. Conscious Uncoupling (or ‘how to divorce’ by Gwyneth Paltrow)
Accepting that a relationship has irretrievably broken down is often extremely difficult, especially when a couple have tried their best to make things work and if there are children who will be affected. What is good to see is that people now have the option of choosing how to separate, and some give careful thought about their choices. The mechanics of obtaining a divorce are usually quite straight forward, particularly if the couple agrees that the marriage is over. The difficulties tend to lie in resolving the practical issues stemming from divorce, such as where to live, the arrangements for the children and any financial matters. We have seen a major shift in attitude in recent years with the emergence of a variety of dispute resolution methods such as Mediation, Collaborative Law, and more recently Family Arbitration. If a reconciliation is not possible, then taking charge of how you separate emotionally, as well as practically and financially, can be the key to remaining on good terms. This is particularly important where there are children involved.

Vale Community Pre-school The month of March saw the children of Vale Community Preschool take delivery of some brand new mini gym equipment for their Pre-school mini gym area and there is more still to come. The children have been engaging in a topic about keeping healthy in the lead up to their ‘Let’s get sporty” Sports Relief session which took place on Friday 21st March raising funds for charity. We raised over £30 in total. Tuesday 22nd April 2014 will see Vale Community Pre-school turn 1 year old and to celebrate such an amazing first year as well as receiving Outstanding in our first inspection by Ofsted in October 2013, Vale Community Pre-school will be holding a very special 1st
Birthday party for their current children on Wednesday 23rd April. Hampton Hargate Primary school After an exciting spring term we are now heading full on into our summer term which is packed full of activities! We have sports days to look forward to, our annual languages week, Year 1 have a multiskills festival coming up and not forgetting our Year 6 residential! Before all that however, we promised to tell you about our Year 5 children and their fantastic production of “Aladdin Trouble” at the end of last term. Their acting and singing skills were certainly put to the test and they came up trumps! They performed two extremely good shows and a great Dress Rehearsal and all their hard work prior to this with learning their lines and songs certainly paid off! A special ‘thank you’ must go to our resident seamstress Sandy who made the amazing costumes. Well done to Miss Shaw, Miss Bland and Miss Kinsey and all the Year 5 team. In other news, we received the results of our recent Big Pedal campaign. Congratulations to all who took part in the campaign. We are pleased to announce that we completed 2529 journeys and came 4th out of all the Peterborough schools that took part and 266th out of 1323 schools who took part across the whole UK - a great result! Our years 5 and 6 enjoyed their visits to Rutland Water recently.
The children walked across a very windy dam, travelled to Egleton to do some bird watching and saw lots of different birds including a Heron and some Swans. They also learnt lots of interesting facts on the day about how Rutland Water was created by flooding the village of Nether Hambleton (which still lies underneath the water) and all about the different uses for the water including fishing and water sports. The children were told about the exciting Osprey breeding programme and the day was then rounded off with some water filtering. Armarni and Jessica from Year 5 said “Our last activity was to try and make dirty water clean and it was really fun. I hope we can go again sometime, it was the GREATEST day of our lives!” And finally - a date for your diary On Thursday 1st May the Friends of Hampton Hargate Primary School will be holding a Bingo night at the school from 6pm—7.45pm. Tickets £3 for adults and £1 for children which includes a book of tickets for all 6 games.

Hampton Vale Primary School “What do you notice?” is one of the questions you will hear children asked most often at Hampton Vale Primary School during their mathematics learning. No matter the age of the children, the question is likely to be followed up by another: “What is your conjecture?” Deeper questioning, which asks children to apply their existing maths skills and knowledge as they work on new concepts, is at the heart of mathematics learning at the school, said headteacher Anne Byrne.
Hampton College (Primary Phase) The end of our spring term went out with a bang as we held our biggest event so far this year – our Mother’s Day Event. It was so lovely to see so many mums and grandmas at school to join us for a Mother’s Day assembly, craft workshops in the classrooms and a nice refreshing cup of tea afterwards. It was also lovely to welcome some of our dads too and one or two younger siblings who enjoyed joining in the fun. The children really enjoyed working with their mums to make different things and there was a lovely atmosphere in school for the event. What was especially interesting was listening to the children talking about what they were going to do to make Mothering Sunday special for their mums – they had some wonderful ideas, from breakfast in bed to buying new shoes for mummy! They also talked about what mummy does for them – our favourite response being “Mummy goes to work to get money to pay for my toys”!
The last week of term was Eastertastic with many Easter related activities in class and a lovely Easter assembly led by our local vicar, Sylvia. The children were all very excited by the end of term approaching but also reflected on why Easter time is so special to Christians too. And so we look forward to our final term of the year. We look forward to the longer days and lighter evenings, to another term of learning and to our children continuing to grow and develop. This term will bring much excitement, with Sports Day and Father’s Day coming up towards the end of term, as well as welcoming in our new reception children, during this term, for their first taste of school. As spring will turn into summer, we look forward to all the fun that the summer term will bring.

While all numeracy learning is tailored to meet each child’s individual needs, a series of special learning programmes, including one-to-one and small group work, is arranged to help those who find numeracy a little more challenging. They include the Numbers Count programme, whose first group of Hampton Vale have graduated. Numbers Count teacher Marie Baxter said: “The children have made some fabulous progress in a subject they have struggled with. We played some great games and used lots of exciting resources. Now that they have finished, they have been invited to come to our Maths Den to play games on Thursday lunchtimes.” Linking numeracy work to other areas of the curriculum
is also vital, added Miss Byrne, so that the children become fully aware of the importance of numeracy skills and knowledge in other areas of life. Numeracy learning is often linked also to the children’s theme work; only a few weeks ago, for example, Year Three children - as part of their theme work about animation enjoyed an Alice in Wonderlandthemed playground event, in which they were asked to solve numeracy puzzles set by the Mad Hatter.

Following an audacious debut in 2013, the Yaxley Festival returns this May with an extra day, more live music and even more community involvement. With the generous support of Yaxley Parish Council and the local business community, the event takes place in the heart of the village at the Middletons Road Recreation Ground from the 16th to 18th of May. Once again live music and entertainment collides with community, living history, sport and village tradition in an event that promises to deliver a fantastic weekend of family fun. This year the Festival Committee is working in partnership with Stanground Academy, who are creating their own zone to showcase the school and its students. New for this year is a second stage, which the Academy will share with our local schools to provide even more opportunities for the youth of the village to perform and have fun.

So says the Hampton community - and we’d like to keep it that way, which is why we’ve decided to devote this month’s ‘Guide to Living on Hampton’ to all the would-be movers and shakers who want to know how to turn their idea for a club, event or activity into a reality.
You may not be aware that the Parish Council itself is also able to make grants of up to £2,000 for non-commercial projects that will benefit the people of the parish – including start-up grants for new organisations. Full details are in the grants section of the Parish Council website.

Finally, it’s worth checking out the local Community Foundation for Cambridgeshire www.cambscf.org.uk .
Before you do anything it’s worth testing the water locally. The Hampton Gazette’s Facebook page is a great place to share any ideas you may have for starting something new on Hampton – and for finding people to help. One recent example was baker Zak Perrin who wanted to know if there was an appetite for his special baked goods and is now running the Brickyard Bakery. Other potential sources of support, ideas and experience visit the interactive map on our website www.ohhampton.co.uk to see what’s already happening in Hampton. Is someone doing something similar you could link up with, or at least learn from? Once you’ve decided to go ahead a source of free and expert help is Peterborough Council for Voluntary Service www.pcvs.co.uk. The centre also offers training as well as advice on everything from working with volunteers to health and safety. Put your money where your mouth is: finding funding It may be that your project or idea needs a little cash to grease its wheels, in which case the first source to check out is the Hampton Community Project. This holds funds to support Hampton-based projects that improve the quality of life for Hampton people, and to start more neighbourhood groups or revitalise existing ones. A condition of the grant is that those applying ‘matchfund’ the money through contributing time, gifts in kind, or by doing their own fundraising. More information and application forms are available on the Hampton Parish Council website www.hamptonpc.org.uk.
These days many businesses receive so many requests for support that they choose, instead, to make a grant to the Foundation and delegate the assessment of applications and award of funds to them. This website also includes a section on further funding sources to consider. Come one, come all: getting the word out It goes without saying that you can reach every home on Hampton through this magazine. The local primary schools and Hampton College publish regular newsletters that are often happy to cover community news, and the Peterborough Telegraph has a whole section of its website and paper devoted to what’s happening in Hampton. Hampton Wednesday Club Hampton’s Wednesday Club is a great example of local people doing it for themselves. The club was the brainchild of a small group of Hampton residents who decided that if they wanted to make friends and stay active it was up to them to make it happen. More than a year on, the club is going strong with members of all ages meeting at the Hampton Vale Community Centre every Wednesday at 1pm. There are activities for all tastes, from bowls and table tennis to quizzing and pub lunches. “Everyone’s welcome to come and make new friends or meet up with old ones,” says the club’s Dianne Dearden. “There’s no charge to join; just turn up!”

So, what is there to do in Hampton for kids? Probably more than you think... One of the jewels in the crown for things to do in Hampton is Scouts. The fun loving patrol meet on Friday evenings in the Hampton Vale Community Centre and offer exciting sessions for children aged 10 - 14 at big value. The £7.50 a month subscription brings guaranteed fun; from games such as everyones favourite, Dodgeball, to nights away activities such as camp. “The sessions provide young people with the chance to explore and experience new things” says Tiger Lily, of the group. Karen explains, “I enjoy encouraging Scouts to earn their badges, its the biggest achievement”. The well structured sessions give the scouts vital skills for life, such as basic first aid, how to cook, how to make a fire and much more. When asked, the children sum up the experience as...enjoyable, funny and of course hyper! They can also start to develop illnesses associated with old age such as diabetes, heart disease, kidney failure, arthritis and cancer. These signs develop slowly and are usually only diagnosed when the problem has become advanced.

Some of the problems you may notice are: • Stiffness or slowing down, difficulty exercising and climbing stairs • Drinking and urinating more often • Toileting in the house • Becoming confused, disorientated, or other behavioural changes • Noticing changes on the skin, lumps and bumps • Bad breath, red gums • Changes in eating patterns, gaining or losing weight • Not interacting with the family as much as before • Changes in activity levels; less active, increased sleeping hours

Note any behavioural changes and whether they are becoming more obvious. Help keep your pets active during the ‘golden years’. Regular check ups with your vet, just as we have regular checks with the doctor. Your pets should be checked yearly at their vaccinations and kept up to date with flea and worming treatments. Make sure your older pets have soft surfaces or beds to lie on. Old bones and joints really appreciate somewhere soft. Make sure your pet is receiving the correct nutrition with age appropriate diets. Note any behavioural changes and whether they are becoming more obvious, like drinking more, or if they become unusually grumpy; these can be subtle signs of underling problems. Make it easier for your pets to get around; having ramps into the car or onto the sofa for dogs, soft carpets on otherwise slippery floors so they can get their grip, and for cats, several platforms they can access to get to the places they like to sit like, window sills.
