Pancake Day is now over for another year, but the church’s marking of the year doesn’t stop! Right now, we are in the reflective season of Lent, as we wait for the celebration of Easter. The theme of the Church of Rather than giving something England’s Lent Challenge this year up (or as well as!), let’s use Lent - and is: Live Lent: Care for God’s Creation. beyond - to care for God’s creation If you were at our pancake event, and steward the planet’s resources you might have picked up the well, remembering the effect that accompanying booklet, designed our actions have on others. I have been collecting for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, in Hampton, since 2012 and as the Hamptons have grown so has the generosity of all the businesses, schools and residential homes in displaying our boxes filled with poppies. We are astounded each year as the donations from the residents and visitors into the area increases with the total raised in Hampton in 2019 being and amazing £2783.19. Hampton is part of the Yaxley and District Royal British Legion and in 2019 the money raised meant that the lives of many servicemen and their families can be remembered and assisted. CUBED: A Short Play Festival Peterborough Mask Theatre brings you their first ever short play festival of six one-act plays, presented as three doublebills over nine performances at the Undercroft The-atre, Serpentine Green, Hampton in March 2020 Well known in the city for producing high quality plays – from last year’s gentle but moving sell-out performances of Alan Bennett’s Lady in the Van, to the hugely successful, rip-roaring farce that was One Man Two Guvnors – Peterborough Mask Theatre is extremely proud to present their first ever short play festival. CUBED: A Short Play Festival brings you six, modern, one-act plays, performed in pairs. Each double-bill will be performed three times, over the course of 9 performances, including one matinee. MASK is giving audiences the chance to take advantage of a special multi-buy offer to see all 6 plays for an amazing £9.99. So why ‘CUBED’? The name of the festival came from the design instruction that was given to the directors – that each play should have its set made up of cubes, and

only cubes. They could be different sizes, but the shape must be CUBED. Our six directors have risen to the challenge and have come up with very creative and ingenious ways of doing this. Written in the 21st century and performed all over the world, these six plays have a range of astonishing accolades. MASK Theatre is thoroughly excited to bring them to a Peterborough audience. Performed in an intimate setting, at the Undercroft, Serpentine Green, you can get close to the heart of the action and become invested in the characters in front of you. Taking place between 12 and 21 March, MASK is hoping that the variety of plays, along with the value for money multi-buy offer, will attract not just regular theatre lovers, but bring in a new audience who want a taster of quality theatre, at an affordable price, in a great local venue.

Evening performances are 7.30pm with one matinee performance at 2.30pm on Saturday 21 March. Tickets are priced at £5 for 1 double-bill, £8 for 2 double-bills and an incredible offer of £9.99 for all three doublebills. Visit www.masktheatre.co.uk for an event planner and to book tickets. Seats are limited so early booking is advised.

Exciting news!

Rangers, which caters for girls aged 14–19 are currently running from Holme Village Hall From 25 February there will be a two centre unit – meeting alternately at Holme and at the Scout and Guide HQ at Yaxley. This should provide a great opportunity for ex Guides in the Yaxley area who are unable or unwilling to get to Holme to continue in Guiding and also provide an opportunity for new girls to join. We offer a safe and girl-only space – to learn, develop, play, be silly, be serious, laugh, have fun, support each other and be adventurous. Come and try on Tuesday 25 February – the contact is Moira Bussey moira. E-mail: girlguiding@outlook.com Tuesday Guides still need a leader who can commit to most Tuesdays 7.30 till 9pm to support the existing team. Get in touch if this could be you! I am also looking for an extra helper in Holme (Mondays, 7.15 till 9pm) as our lovely Unit leader there is a bit overstretched with a very busy work and home life. We have spaces in Guides on a Monday (Holme) and Tuesday (Yaxley) but long waiting lists for Rainbows and Brownies. If anyone reading is interested in setting up a new Unit for the younger age groups in Yaxley or Holme please talk to me – I need at least 3 leaders per group so a group of friends would be ideal. You would be mentored and supported. You can find out more on the website www.girlguiding.org.uk and when you’ve had a look there is a link to the registration site for girls to join at any age from 5 to 18, and also for adults to volunteer for whatever you have time for. You don’t need experience of Guiding, although it helps. A smile and a responsible attitude is all that’s required. Training/DBS check etc is free!

To a special mum Remembering mums of kids with additional needs on Mother's Day On Mother's Day my Facebook and Instagram feeds fill with photos. The captions declare, ‘Beautiful bouquet from my son!' #mothersday or 'My daughters took me to see Les Mis' #mothersday. In spite of the fact that I have a much-loved son he will never send me flowers or take me to the theatre. Tom has Down Syndrome and is also autistic, nonverbal and has a myriad of complex health problems. I love him and I know he loves me, but I will be his carer long after my friends' kids have left home and started their own families. This is my shout-out to other mums whose Mother's Day celebrations will be bittersweet. You are not alone - There are more of us than you think. Our children may all have different problems, but we understand each other’s sense of being on the outside, at the celebrations 'normal' families take for granted: Christmas, birthday parties, family gettogethers and Mothers' Days. You are AWESOME - You are a full-blown superhero my friend.

Your superpower is the ability to deal with situations other parents could not conceive in their worst nightmares. You might acquire knowledge and skills beyond those required by most doctors, memorising medication regimens, side effects, and how to inject or infuse the drugs. You deal calmly with your hysterical child during horrendous medical procedures. You deal with melt-downs in public toilets over hand-dryers! You encourage your child to do the things doctors assured you they would never do. You crash, you burn, and you get up and do it all again the next day anyway. You celebrate your kids' achievements on their terms - Other parents crow about their child's GCSE results or a grade 4 piano exam passed with distinction or a star-of-the-week award for neat handwriting. Our celebrations look different though they are no less important. We celebrated Tom signing 'Mum', 'Dad' and 'love’ for the first time, and we definitely celebrated him taking a bath

without screaming, drowning us or flooding the house! You have the best black sense of humour - 'nuff said. We know that we laugh at things parents of typical kids would not find the least bit funny, like the weird people you meet during all-nighters in A&E departments, discovering excrement smeared over your freshly-painted walls, or an aquarium full of dead fish because your child wanted to feed them and the only box he could reach was the small one posted through the door containing a sample of washing powder! RIP Tom's fish!

You accept, and don’t compare - You become the mum other mothers confide in because their child doesn’t walk, talk, read, or ride a bike as well as their peers. Never mind that your child is 10, non-verbal and rides a large trike because of balance issues! You accept (mostly) other parents’ rights to brag or worry about their kids even though you often feel that sense of 'otherness'. You are special. To mothers of additional needs kids everywhere ...

Happy Mother's Day

What does spring offer? Spring is a time when traditionally new life appears and the planet awakens from the cold of winter but what will spring 2020 have to offer? Recent weather trends have seen prolonged dry periods in spring which is bad news for spring sown food and flowers alike On the whole, it seems that we have had a warm but wet winter with many areas particularly in floodplains constantly under water and what does this mean for invertebrates. Heavy water-logging and flooding is extremely bad news for those that are sheltering in the ground such as hibernating bumblebees or solitary bee larvae and even to earthworms whose numbers will have been greatly reduced. All bad news for those trying to grow on this land in the year ahead. There is though a double whammy for growers as warm and wet also means no hibernation for slugs and snails which will have instead remained active throughout the winter doing what they do eating and breeding. It seems then that winter has already got us off to a bad growing start so what is really needed is a warm spring with sufficient overnight showers this will help plants grow and the beneficial invertebrates revive the only good thing about an arid spring is it would at least stop the slugs in their tracks but what flowers could thrive for our pollinators in this case. If current weather patterns set in to become the long term norm then we may all have to re-evaluate what is grown and when as our fauna will be forced to change too.

Lakota (Lover of Nature)

Walking past Serpentine Lake the other day I caught sight of a rather colourful duck marked with green, white and brown It looked different to other ducks I have seen in Hampton. Moving round to the other side of the lake I had a closer view, and with binoculars could see the distinctive wide bill of a shoveler duck. It even performed the straight line scooping of its bill through the water, searching for food. Up and down it went several times. I haven’t recognised such a duck in all the years I have lived in Hampton, so it brought quite a cheer to an overcast winter’s day. You could easily mistake it for a mallard duck, but a male mallard has a grey body and a shoveler has a clear chestnut brown patch across the middle of its body. A shoveler’s beak is also a blackish grey whereas a mallard’s is yellow. It is harder, though, to spot the difference between a female shoveler and a female mallard because both have similar plumage, being a mottled brown. If you

can get closer enough, though, that wide ‘shovellike’ bill will distinguish between the two. It becomes even harder though to distinguish a male shoveler after the breeding season is over because the males lose their colourful feathers and replace them with ones similar to the female: a mottled brown. The shoveller’s beak is its distinctive feature, being much wider than most other ducks. It has a comb like structure on its edges which acts as a sieve to filter out food from the water’s surface, which includes water living insects, small animals, weeds, seeds and molluscs. In America they have some interesting nicknames for the shoveler: spoonie, spoonbill, spooner, spoontang and even schpoon-a-licious! A very attractive and unusual duck I thought, and right on our doorstep.

An annual

fiesta

I’ve always loved an annual. From Bunty to The Blue Peter Annual, they were crammed full of interest and fun. As I grew older my taste in annuals has become more horticultural. One little pack of seeds is now my gardening equivalent of the Beano - a brief shelf-life and packed with colour. Hardy annuals are the most obliging. They don’t need a propagator or a greenhouse, or even a windowsill; all they need is a sunny spot and some well-drained soil. Just sprinkle the seeds in the ground and you can look forward to a fiesta of summer colour for very little work. The choice of plants and hue is wide. If blue is your thing try a soft shade of love-in-a-mist, or a vivid blue cornflower, or the most gorgeous tiny phacelia. For pinks try a fluffy clarkia or delicate godetia. Nasturtiums span the colour wheel from cream through yellow and orange to deep red. Annual doesn’t mean small either. Both larkspurs and amaranthus are tall and elegant, and cleomes which also provide height probably only need to be planted once as they are prolific self-seeders! Look around your garden for gaps in beds and borders which are in a sunny spot and well-drained. Don’t plant when it’s cold or the soil is wet and sticky. Wait until the weather is mild and soil is damp and crumbly, then fork it lightly to break it up. Use

a rake to create shallow furrows, sprinkle the seeds over and rake them gently in, raking across the furrows to cover them. Bigger seeds like nasturtiums can be pushed into the soil a couple of centimetres deep and 10-15cm apart. Label the area so you know what should come up. The biggest enemy of the newlyplanted hardy annual seed is the domestic cat! They love a patch of freshly raked soil, and will happily do their business in your handiwork and then kick up all your seeds without a second thought. Thwart the moggies by laying twiggy pea sticks over the area (and particularly twiggy and thorny prunings will do!). Remove them with the shoots are big enough or stand them up and use them to support the taller annuals. Thin them out a little to one plant per 10cm and water them if the weather is very dry. You don’t need to feed them, they flower best when the soil is not rich. Food and manure will favour leaf production whereas we’re after flowers and lots of them! Happy gardening.

Holme Village Pre-School

Holme Village Pre-School are very happy to announce their recent Ofsted rating of "GOOD" at the end of January 2020!

The Ark CSK So here we are in March! It’s been a busy couple of months at The Ark and we have particularly enjoyed welcoming new babies and their parents (and grandparents!) to our Ark community It’s also lovely to see old friends and this has been particularly true with the return of some mums who have recently given birth to their second child and are now back at The Ark on a Thursday morning. It’s amazing how quickly the lyrics for ‘Sleeping Bunnies’ or ‘When I go climbing’ get stuck in your head again! We continue to enjoy a range of sensory activities which give opportunities for the children to experience different textures, scents and colours. Lisa has been adding details of each activity to our Facebook page along with a little slideshow which gives a glimpse of what The Ark is all about. In response to our concern about the climate situation, we are no longer using paper plates for refreshments and encourage parents/carers to bring their own cup/mug with a lid. We are also aiming to avoid single use plastic and use only bio-degradable wet wipes when necessary. Above all, The Ark is about community. So why not come and join us. The Ark welcomes 0 - 5 year olds with their parents, grandparents and carers. There is no need to book, just turn up at 10am on Thursday at CSK Church (term time only). The session finishes at 11.15am. We have a dedicated area for babies and their parents/carers within The Ark setup. Come and join us. www.facebook.com/TheArkHampton

Ofsted describes the setting as a "warm and welcoming pre-school" with "staff who make time to get to know the children and families." We are very pleased with this result and are already striving to achieve more in the coming year. If you'd like to know more about our lovely Pre-School, please find us on Facebook or email managerholmepreschool@yahoo.com

Over the past month we have been learning about different occupations and how different people can help us

Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School The children have enjoyed role-playing different occupations. The children are excited for our plans to get out into the local community and explore the different facilities we have around us. In the baby unit the children have been enjoying messy play activities; painting, playing in shaving foam, flour and water. We are currently taking bookings for September 2020 and also into 2021! If you would like to come and have a look around and are interested in a space please contact the nursery on 01733 244000 or enquiries@littleacorns-daynursery.co.uk

Mini Movers We have enjoyed welcoming new people to our sessions but we have plenty of room to welcome more! We will be able to use the outdoor space for the children with the better weather, as hopefully spring will have sprung by the time you are reading this! If you haven’t been, please come along to try out a session. If you’re nervous about coming alone bring a friend or family member, everyone is welcome! We are a really friendly group with a great mix of children. You can always give us a call before coming, or message us through Facebook and we will be happy to welcome you and your child to our stay and play sessions. It’s just £1 per family, for children from Newborn to Reception age, Monday afternoons (term times), 1.15pm to 2.45pm at the Hampton Vale Community Centre. Refreshments are included and all sessions are informal drop in ones, so no need to book. The sessions are run by volunteers from KingsGate Community Church. Contact Rachael 07983 421139 for more info, or just pop along, we would love to see you.

Hampton College Primary Phase The new Key Stage Two Reading Realm opened to the children after Christmas and years 3 to 6 have been very excited about visiting it

It is now home to a beautiful mural painted by Fentastic Murals, over 800 new books (all colour book banded to enable all children to make appropriate book choices), cushions, rug and plants. The space has been transformed and it has really helped to create a book buzz around school. The Key Stage One library will soon be given an update. Watch this space for photos!

We are really excited to announce that on Friday 6 March, published author, Andy Seed, will be visiting the school. He will be hosting writing workshops with all the year groups and there will be a book-signing event after school should parents and children wish to buy one of his books and get it signed!

Hampton College Year 8 Hampton College students had a great day at the IET Faraday Challenge at Bourne Academy, where they competed with four other school teams for the best STEM design, prototype and presentation. One of our Hampton College teams came out as the overall winners for a fantastic team performance all day.

Hampton College Our first Year 4 residential has taken place and the children had the most fabulous time at Stibbington They enjoyed a visit to the nature reserve, using maps and co-ordinates to help develop their orienteering skills. The students really enjoyed their day in a life of a Roman and investigating the village while researching the local area. Year 5 expelled lots of energy at the Hampton College Multi Skills festival. The children worked well in team sports and were seen giving each other lots of encouragement. On Tuesday 11 February we took part in Safer Internet Day. The children enjoyed a special assembly, along with lessons and activities to help promote a safer use of the internet. And finally, last month the children helped raise money and awareness for the Junior Diabetes Charity by having a Onesie/ Non-uniform day. We raised a great amount of money for the charity and loved seeing everyone’s onesies - it sure was a comfy day!

Girls' Football Hampton FC has been at the centre of the local community since 2003 - providing a safe and inclusive environment for junior footballers of all ages and abilities We believe that every young girl should have the opportunity to experience football. Following the successful launch of Inclusive (Disability) Football in January, we are very proud to have been designated a Wildcats Girls' Football Centre - which means that from April we will be offering girls aged 5-11 years old with the opportunity to have fun, make friends and play football. Wildcat Centres are a national FA network which provide a fun,

friendly environment to develop young girls’ physical & social skills by encouraging a healthy lifestyle and inspiring them to develop a lifelong love of the game. 'Hampton FC already have one Girls Football Team, so we are delighted to be able to offer more local girls the chance to have fun through football. Hopefully it could also be the starting point for a future international player, referee or coach.' Rob Neal, Chairman

Money Matters

by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants

… We’re still waiting Yes, the long awaited divorce reform has still not hit the statute books. For several years now there has been imminent hope and expectation that no fault divorce will at long last be introduced into the law of England and Wales. The UK is a long way behind other western jurisdictions in this respect. If you haven’t waited for 2 or even 5 years since separation, you have to use the grounds of unreasonable behaviour or adultery in order to obtain a divorce from your spouse. The excitement of Brexit, changes of governments and general elections have served to put this important piece of family law legislation on the back burner where apparently it still remains. Family law specialists will help you draft unreasonable behaviour particulars in such a way that your petition will cross the bar legally – in other words, the allegations amount to behaviour such that it would be considered unreasonable to continue to live with the respondent – but at the same time are not so extreme and hurtful to start your matrimonial proceedings off on a really bad note. Anyone watching “The Split” (BBC1) will know how unpleasant a behaviour divorce can be. Increasingly, petitioners are using the online divorce facility which is available in limited areas of the country and should be in general use next year, but the same legal criteria will apply. Although it is tempting to reduce costs and do it yourself, there are pitfalls, that could cause serious problems down the line. If you have any doubts about how to draft a divorce petition, make sure that you obtain expert advice from a family lawyer.

Do you need an accountant for your small business? If you run a small business or you're self-employed, having an accountant can bring some advantages Having an accountant frees up your time so you can focus on your business. An accountant can handle key functions such as bookkeeping, and filing your accounts and tax returns on time. An accountant can also save you money in many areas by increasing tax efficiency and improving cash flow. They can provide invaluable general support by offering general business advice, discussing your ideas and future growth plans. Above all, a good accountant provides you with the reliable financial information you need to make key decisions. Is this accountant right for you? Personality is key in any relationship, so it’s worth meeting your accountant in person before engaging their services. You’ll be working closely together, so a personal connection is important. Ask about their range of services to make sure they can meet all your needs. It’s also good practice to talk about qualifications and experience and are they qualified? Accountants will offer different packages For example, you may want to pay an accountant monthly or agree a fixed fee for their services. This means that they deal with all your finances. You can choose the most suitable option

depending on how heavily you want your accountant involved. One-person band, small firm or larger firm Is the size of your accounting firm right for your needs? Broadly speaking, you should match like with like. If you’re a contractor, sole trader or micro company, then a small firm might suit you best. But if you’re a fast-growing start-up with a big vision, you might be looking for a larger sized firm to match. The location of your accountant It does not matter too much where your accountant is based, as most work can be done remotely. But regular face-to-face meetings are valuable and can be much more productive. A face-to-face meeting allows you to discuss your business in broader terms and may spark creativity. So, it's an advantage to be within travelling distance to your accountant as you can visit in person. If you want to use an accountant, choosing the right one is very important for your business. Foot queries answered What is the difference between a Chiropodist and a Podiatrist? There is no difference. Podiatrist is the internationally accepted term, but both have the same qualifications and both need to be registered with the Health Professions Council.

What does a chiropodist/ podiatrist do? They treat and advise on all matters relating to feet. Most people think of ingrown toenails, but they also treat Athlete’s foot, fungal nail infections, corns, verrucae and cracked heels.

What about foot pain? Yes, a good Chiropodist will be able to advise, diagnose and provide a treatment plan for biomechanical problems of the feet as well as bunions and toe deformities.

I suffer with smelly, sweaty feet. Could a Chiropodist help me?

What about permanently cold feet?

Absolutely. In some people the sweat glands of the feet are over active, producing more sweat than they should. Some people also have greater than normal amounts of bacteria on their skin and it is the reaction of the bacteria with the sweat which causes the unpleasant odour. A chiropodist will be able to advise on footwear, foot hygiene and any sprays or creams which might help.

A podiatrist could certainly look into the possible causes of your cold feet and make recommendations. Often cold feet are linked to poor circulation and become more common with age. Podiatrists check pulse points and can refer to other health care professionals if required.

Hapi Hemp Raw Hemp Seed Skin Oil Hapi Hemps RAW oil is an extremely popular facial oil with our female customers of all ages. This wonderful oil contains no CBD, just raw, pure organic hemp seed oil and powerful essential oils. Those with problem skin have reported some amazing results and you can see for yourself with the before and after photos below. The oil helps treat teen and mature acne – everything in this bottle is completely pure and natural. Hemp seed is one of the only oils that is non-comedogenic, meaning that it allows the skin to breathe and doesn’t block the pores helping prevent breakouts. It moisturises deeply, encouraging the growth of new cells, whilst softening and rejuvenating the skin.

 A completely natural skin product that is ideal for young teen skin as well as mature skin.  Our organic raw hemp seed oil has a refreshing blend of frankincense, grapefruit and peppermint essential oils.  Full of therapeutic grade essential oils – Frankincense, peppermint & grapefruit which helps with blemishes, acne, hydration and skin tone.  Naturally rich in essential fatty acids, vitamin E and amino acids, Hemp Seed Oil is a natural antioxidant.  Light and easily absorbed by the skin. Hemp seed oil is balancing and hydrating.  Can help with premature ageing, acne, tightening / shrinking pores and balancing oily skin

How does hemp oil benefit your skin? Moderates oil production Hemp oil is perfect for most skin types as it can moisturize without clogging your pores. It can even help to balance out oily skin, hydrating it and regulating the skin’s oil production. Dryness can also cause your skin to overproduce oil, which in turn, can stimulate acne. Hemp oil can prevent dry skin without clogging pores. This helps reduce acne that’s caused by excess oil. Moisturizes and soothes inflammation One of the omega-6 fatty acids that hemp oil contains is gammalinolenic acid (GLA), which acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory while simultaneously encouraging skin growth and new cell generation. This can help to calm inflammation

Hapi Skin!

Bare to be beautiful for spring with this amazing raw organic oil and irritation on the skin, including acne and some conditions like psoriasis while keeping the skin nourished and moisturized. Treats atopic dermatitis Part of what makes hemp seed oil so beneficial to the skin is that it’s rich in omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. Consuming these nutrients can help to treat skin conditions like atopic dermatitis. Has anti-aging properties In addition to moisturizing and soothing the skin, hemp oil has anti-aging properties. Hemp oil can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles as well as prevent signs of aging from developing. The linoleic acid and oleic acids found in hemp oil can’t be produced by the body but can play a crucial role in skin health and anti-aging, so they’re important nutrients to add to the diet.

We have many before and after pictures from customers using this wonderful product and you can read more about these in our Facebook group – Hapi Hemp CBD users UK. Maisie

Ally

Like most tens Maisie was horrified at the thought of putting oil all over her face! But after suffering with teen skin issues she was willing to give it a try. The results were amazing, and Maisie wouldn’t use anything else, she now not only uses it as a moiserisrer she also cleanses with it. (See above)

As a busy self-employed businesswoman, Ally didn’t always have time to spend too long on her skin and found she was struggling with mature hormonal acne. After just ONE WEEK of using our oil she noticed a difference and the before and after pictures say it all.

For thousands of years people recognised the beneficial properties of using essential oils for health & wellness. So, imagine the power of these wonderful plants once they have been blended? Frankincense – Benefits include the ability to strengthen skin and improve its tone, elasticity, and defence mechanisms against bacteria or blemishes. Used topically and cosmetically, its astringent and cytophylactic qualities help Frankincense oil to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and skin imperfections such as discolouration. It stimulates the growth of new cells, thus when used on cuts it promotes faster healing. It’s also a great inflammatory.

Peppermint – Helps fight breakouts and blemishes by cleaning the skin from deep within and balancing the natural oils to strike the right pH balance. Its menthol content has a cooling effect that reduces inflammation and encourages clear, bright skin. This makes it a much sought-after essential oil to treat sunburns. Grapefruit – Grapefruit essential oil may contribute to healthy skin by preventing and treating skin conditions like acne. Many brands of face lotions and creams include grapefruit essential oils because of its refreshing scent and potent antibacterial and antioxidant activity. Grapefruit oil could help keep your skin bacteria-free, which may promote the acne healing process.

Join the fight in the war against scammers It will come as no surprise that fraud is the most commonly experienced crime in the UK, with costs to the economy and individual victims running into billions of pounds. In January 2020 alone, 88K was lost to Courier Fraud in Cambridgeshire with much more lost across other different types of frauds, especially Romance Fraud The impact of fraud, scams and related offences can be devastating; ranging from unaffordable personal losses suffered by vulnerable victims to impacting the ability of organisations to stay in business. Data breaches continue to be a key enabler of fraud, with personal and financial information obtained in a breach which is then used to commit frauds affecting individuals, the private and public sectors alike. Scammers are becoming more and more sophisticated in their methods; often posing as police, banking or government bodies in attempts to promote an authoritative approach.

However, there are many agencies working harder than ever to stamp out the scammers including Friends Against Scams; an initiative which empowers members of the public to join the fight on fraud and become a Scam Champion. Friends Against Scams is a National Trading Standards Scams Team initiative that aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams. The county-wide initiative is the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP) who are committed to working towards stamping out scams; from postal and online fraud to telephone scams and doorstep rogue traders.

Did you know?

Scams cost the UK economy between £5-10 billion a year

53 per cent of people over 65 have been targeted by scams Only five per cent of scams are reported

The average scam victim has lost over £3,000

You are twice as likely to fall victim to fraud than any other type of crime

On a national level, Action Fraud works to inform and empower members of the public about the latest scams, and also offers a fraud reporting service. If you think you or a loved one may have been the victim of a scam, report it. To find out how you can sign up for the fight against fraud, and read some tips on spotting a scam, go to www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk

And it is easy to get involved. The first step is to take the Friends Against Scams online learning at www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk/elearning/Cambridgeshire You could then become a Scams Champion, gaining all the information and resources you need to help spread the word – see www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk/become-a-scamchampion
