Our special feature for July focuses on education, including tutoring and summer schools, alongside some thoughts to help take the pressure off anyone suffering from the race to catch up on post-pandemic learning. We start a CityWide section to celebrate some Peterborough events on our doorstep. Take a look at how to see the fantastic Moon with a View (seeing One Small Step from above, plus the view from the top of the tower) on page 9. Strong sun, high temperatures, humidity and pool or sea water will damage your hair, leaving it dry and brittle. Turn to page 30 for a gentle approach to hairstyling over the summer. Next month, our special feature will concentrate on property, so please get in touch if you want to be included in this.

Hope in the Storm Back in May, Rev Sylvia wrote about the Archbishops’ prayer initiative called Thy Kingdom Come. One of the things we did in that time was make a community piece of prayer art togeth-er, that we entitled Hope in the Storm. This is our finished piece - or nearly finished (we have about 10 more boats, if anyone would like to pop by Chimes Coffee Shop during opening hours and add one) - and it depicts how a lighthouse guides boats to safety, even in turbulent times.

Jesus calmed a storm when he was out on the Sea of Galilee with his disciples, much to their terrified surprise. As we decorated our boats, we used them as a prayer, giving thanks, but also asking Jesus to reveal to us that same calm where we need it in our lives. The disciples were scared and confused, like many of us at times over the last 18 months, but they met the living God, who rescued them and brought them peace.

Mark’s Gospel records it like this: ‘Jesus got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Qui-et! Be still!” Then the wind died down and was completely calm.’ Jesus still calms storms today and it’s our prayer for anyone reading this, and all of Hampton, that you know his peace. If there’s anything specific we can pray for you, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us, via the contact details above.

PROMOTION

Digital connectivity will pave the way for a new era in healthcare Years from now, when we reflect on the millions of healthcare professionals that rose to the challenge to fight COVID-19 with bravery, dedication and courage, will we see the pandemic as a turning point when healthcare truly embraced a digital transformation? COVID-19 has become a catalyst for change in many ways, accelerating digitalisation across the board. We’ve seen email, telephone and video consultations replace face-to-face appointments and an explosion in the use of healthcare apps and web platforms to check symptoms, stay informed and find new ways to keep fit and healthy. GP practices and hospitals in Peterborough and indeed, nationwide, have adapted with incredible agility to provide crucial services, from remote diagnosis and treatment to symptom tracking and online test booking. This has made many services more accessible and more efficient than ever before, even for the most remote or vulnerable of patients. But is our infrastructure up to the challenge of further digitalisation across the entire health service?

Full Fibre – a foundation for digital transformation The more widely available full fibre is, the easier it will be for this momentum towards a digital transformation in healthcare – hence why the Government has made levelling up connectivity across the country a key part of its ambitions. With the UK set to have 80% of the country covered by gigabit-capable broadband by 2025, now is the time for those within the healthcare industry to start thinking about what this could potentially unlock for them in the form of new digital services. Innovation in this space is already unlocking many new insights into healthcare, making it possible to develop therapies and approaches that could strengthen health and care services in the face of perhaps more, as yet, unknown challenges. Harnessing analytics, for example, is already proving invaluable in the diagnosis and treatment of various cancers, while

data platforms have allowed for rapid research into the spread and risk factors associated with COVID-19. Governments and local authorities in a growing number of countries, including South Korea, have used analytics to trace the contacts of people infected with the virus. Closer to home, the Newcastle University Urban Observatory has used sensor data to identify bottlenecks where social distancing cannot be maintained, understand how citizens adapt as restrictions are imposed or lifted and ultimately, prepare for future crises. Using digital healthcare tools and data as a preventative tool has potential applications on a much grander scale – even to identify and quash future pandemics.

Building a digital future At CityFibre, we’re hard at work to bring full fibre to towns and cities across the UK, including right here in Peterborough. We know that change is constant, and that what we rely on today in terms of infrastructure will not be sufficient in the decades, years, even months that lie ahead. The UK Government’s current aim is for every NHS hospital, GP practice and community care service to gain access to full fibre broadband as soon as possible and there are a several towns and cities across the UK, just like Milton Keynes University Hospital (MKUH), which we have already helped make the switch. Ultimately, we want full fibre to be the standard communications infrastructure across the UK; not just for public services, but for citizens and businesses too. This will be a critical element in ensuring communities across Peterborough can use online health services effectively and that the shift to digital healthcare reaches its full potential.

To find out more or register an interest in the service go to cityfibre.com/hampton

‘Mini-forest’ creates wildlife haven at Nene Valley Community Centre Over 700 trees have been planted at Nene Valley Community Centre with the support of Peterborough environmental charity PECT More than 20 different native species were carefully selected to create a colourful and biodiverse ‘mini forest’. As part of the mini forest creation, all of the trees have been planted in plastic-free shelters. The shelters are important for the trees’ survival, as they protect them from foraging animals like rabbits and deer as well as creating the ideal microclimate, which improves the trees’ growth. The project is part of PECT’s Forest for Peterborough project, which aims to plant over 230,000 trees in and around the city by 2030

to reduce carbon emissions and enhance the environment. Forest for Peterborough has been funded by Viridor and Green Recovery Challenge Fund. Tony Cook, Natural Environment Lead at PECT, said:

“We have plans to help create more ‘mini forest’s in communities areas across Peterborough and we are really excited to see the impact of them. We wouldn’t be able to achieve all of this without the support from our wonderful volunteers and funders.”

“This has been a really fantastic project to be involved in, the creation of the mini forest will help to tackle environmental issues such as climate change and biodiversity loss while providing a natural space for communities to enjoy.

Mini forests play a crucial role in biodiversity and can attract over 500 species of animals and plants into an area the size of a small tennis court. They also provide an important resource for insects, birds, and small mammals, and help to mitigate the carbon footprint of our cities.

If you are interested in tree planting or supporting the Forest for Peterborough project you can find more information at www.pect.org.uk Alternatively, you can get in touch on 01733 568408 or email: nature@pect.org.uk.

Walking on the Moon at Peterborough Cathedral

Jetting away to the sun may be out of reach, but if you bring the family to Peterborough Cathedral this summer you could be ‘walking on the moon’ instead! The Cathedral has announced that it will be hosting a giant representation of the lunar surface, created by the renowned sculptor and artist Peter Walker using imagery from NASA. The 36m x 7m art installation, entitled One Small Step was originally created to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Lunar Landing in 2019, when it was shown at Lichfield Cathedral. The piece will be displayed at Peterborough Cathedral from 17 July until 31 October. It will transform a huge area of the floor in the north and south transepts, and under the tower, into an image of the moon’s terrain, showing all the craters and details of the lunar rock. Visitors will be able to walk on the surface and even locate the place where Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin

made their Apollo 11 landing in 1969. It will be a great spot to take a selfie!

be in that space to reflect on what this means for them and all mankind.”

Ever since Peterborough Cathedral has hosted Tim Peake’s Spacecraft as part of its nationwide tour, followed by Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon and Gaia art installations, it has been prompting visitors to think about their place in the wider universe.

During the exhibition there will be a variety of events and hands-on activities for all ages and the full programme will be announced soon. Amongst the events the Cathedral hopes to present are Dancing on the Moon (a silent disco), One Giant Leap (a lunar craft’s day with teddy bear drop) and Moon with a View (seeing One Small Step from above, plus the view from the top of the tower). Mezzo-soprano Gabriella PinedaRodrigues will be giving a concert of Songs to the Moon, on Saturday 24 July at 7.30pm and tickets – socially distanced in the nave - are now on sale.

The creator of One Small Step, Peter Walker, said: “When you look up at the moon, it is untouchable, but we wanted to bring the moon to the people and invite them to take their own small steps across it. The vast and sacred setting of a cathedral is the perfect place in which to do this. I hope that One Small Step will encourage people to explore possibilities, reach for the moon and

The exhibition is being kindly supported by sponsors Henson Crisp and Speed Agency.

Entry to the Cathedral and the exhibition is by donation. 10am to 4pm Mon to Sat and 12.noon until 3pm on Sundays. On Thursdays during the school holidays the exhibition will also be open from 6.30pm until 8.30pm. For more information please visit www.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/onesmallstep.aspx.

citywide The Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC), currently located within the City Care Centre on Thorpe Road in Peterborough, is set to relocate to Peterborough City Hospital this summer and form part of the Trust’s urgent and emergency care service.

The Urgent Treatment Centre Relocates From 1 July, patients requiring treatment for minor illnesses and injuries will be seen within the new UTC, which is accessed via the same entrance as the emergency department on the Peterborough City Hospital site. The move will bring all urgent and emergency care services in Peterborough together on one site, ensuring patients have access to the right services at the right time. Once the move is complete, the UTC will continue to open 8am – 8pm, seven days a week, with patients being asked to contact NHS 111 first before attending, if possible. The UTC will also house the GP out of hours service where patients can book an appointment via 111. Dr Athar Yasin, Clinical Lead for Emergency Medicine at the North West Anglia NHS

Foundation Trust, which runs Peterborough City Hospital, said: “This is a positive step towards improving the patient experience and should ensure we get patients in the right place, first time, by the right clinician, which will also help us manage attendances to our emergency department.” The modular build was lifted into place by a 122 tonne crane. Locally, health and care organisations are working together as part of The Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Integrated Care System (ICS) to develop and improve urgent care services available to patients. Previous developments over the past eighteen months have included the launch of successful

NHS 111 triage pilots within Hinchingbrooke and Peterborough City Hospital’s emergency departments. The pilots helped to connect patients with the right service if the emergency department wasn’t the best place to meet their needs. This work has received national recognition for helping to shape the future of urgent care services across the country. Mike More, Interim Chair of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Integrated Care System said “We are committed to working together to provide innovative, accessible and high quality health services. Through strong partnerships, such as with our local NHS 111 service and Peterborough City Hospital, the relocation of the UTC will enable us to provide a one-stop-shop for all urgent and emergency health care needs.”

Cruises Are Staying At Home So You Don’t Have To Where do i even start? It looks like it could be another staycation holiday this summer. You may be thinking a week in a caravan is not your thing but there are many other options. Cruise companies are staying in the British Isles and you can get yourself on a stunning luxury cruise liner, or you could have a lodge with a hot tub out in the countryside, or maybe a tour of Liverpool visiting everything Beatles for a few days.

If UK staycations are not your thing then why not indulge in a holiday for next year and cross somewhere off the bucket list? Many people are doing this and it may be more possible than you think. I have seen a massive increase in New York and Caribbean holidays or Far East and people no longer putting these off - you only live once, right? The traffic light system will likely be here for a while and is something we need to get used to but I pray that it is simplified with all of the tour operators going by the same rules to give customers a little more confidence to book. So, whatever you are doing for the summer, enjoy it and make the most of the family time, it is still all about making those special memories that we always do on our holidays, not stressing about the next email or our workload and just enjoying time with our loved ones. Vegetable Growing As lovely as this time of year is, there is no doubt that your vegetable growing will be close to peaking and perhaps in some areas be on the decline. Rather than leaving the fun of growing your own until next year, it’s time to add to what you already have and start some crops from fresh. Even if you’ve missed the boat totally and never actually planted anything this year, there’s still time to grow some tasty home-grown vegetable and herbs.

Ruby chard

Carrots

These brightly coloured plants create an attractive display as well as tasty food. ‘Bright Lights’ is the wackiest, with bright yellow, orange, red, pink and purple stems. It can be sown successfully into August and can be used as ‘baby leaves’ for salads or as an alternative to spinach.

Some varieties of ‘maincrop’ carrot including ‘Ideal’ can still be sown until early August. Sow within the week and you’ll be cropping from autumn to Christmas time. Choose a light soil, free from stones, or grow in a deep container.

Mizuna Several of the oriental vegetables respond especially well to later sowing, Mizuna being a favourite. With its pretty divided leaves and ability to grow very fast, it can be sown from now and into September. A covering of fleece helps to keep the flea beetle away.

Spring onions These grow rapidly and although it is getting late, a prompt sowing now should still give you a crop of tiny spring onions in October. Sow enough to leave some in the soil, so you can then harvest full-sized versions in March.

Baby spinach These are perfect in salads and sandwiches and are tastier and more tender (and a lot cheaper) than those you buy in cellophane bags. Make successional sowings from now and into September and in five to six weeks you can harvest the baby leaves. If you like full-sized spinach leaves for cooking, then just leave the crop in the ground and allow it to grow a little more.

Chinese cabbage Another late-season stalwart, it is one of the fastest growers and perfect for anyone who wants a delicate steamed vegetable or a wonderfully

tasty and crunchy addition to a Chinese-style meal. Also known as Chinese leaves, if you sow promptly you should be harvesting in late October.

French beans Grown at home, these are so much better than the supermarket’s offerings. A speedy sowing now should produce plenty of beans that you can harvest in mid-autumn. Choose a variety such as ‘Tendergreen’ and it should perform well. There are numerous different colours and shapes of salad leaf available and they can be sown now, either singly or in combination. Simply use scissors to snip off what you need and, provided you don’t cut too low, they’ll act as a cut-andcome-again crop. Look out for mixed seed packs including all sorts of tasty varieties such as rocket, baby beet, lettuce and basil.

There...almost too much to eat!

We’ve all got to take more care of our bumblebees. I know they sting but they do have an attractive furriness about them. Their very name conjures up a sleepy wandering nature. But they’re not sleepy at all; they’re absolutely the epitome of a ‘busy bee’! Just watch them around Hampton collecting nectar from wild and garden flowers.

Hampt  n

We’ve been urged to encourage them because they have been declining in numbers over the past few years, due mainly to changes in the way the countryside is managed, coupled with climate change. Apparently 97% of flower rich meadows have been lost since 1937. And it is these flowers that bumblebees rely on to feed: they collect the pollen to feed the queen because it is rich in the proteins needed to make eggs, and the nectar in order to provide themselves with energy and water. They do produce a type of honey which they store in nectar cups on the ground, and only produce enough for their immediate food

needs. Unlike honeybees, though, most bumblebees don’t live through the winter and so don’t need to store honey to use during that period. How bumblebees fly has been a source of fascination. It appears that their wings are too small to lift such a large body. However, their ability to fly is down to the speed at which they can beat their wings – around 200 times a second. This allows them to move the same amount of air as a pair of larger, slowly beating wings, like those of birds. Many types of bumblebees (there are 25 types in the UK) nest under the ground in holes but some also

use crevices above ground. We can help to increase their numbers by firstly planting bee friendly flowers and secondly by creating nesting

sites using upturned flowerpots as suggested by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust diagram. The importance of halting the decline

is due to the fact that bumblebees are important pollinators for food production and wildflower diversity. Last year on Channel 4 Jimmy Docherty made a programme in Peterborough to highlight the decline in bee numbers. He describes Peterborough as having ‘…some of the lowest bee numbers around…’ so we do need to help as much as we can. The lovely lady who mows our Hampton grass is doing her bit to leave areas where wildflowers blossom and the Bumblebee Conservation Trust has a list of flowers for our gardens that will help to increase the number of bumblebees.

Summer School at Kip McGrath Are you worried about your child’s education because of school closures and lockdown over the last year?  Is your child struggling with basic maths, reading and phonics or their writing skills?

School’s IN for Summer Ofsted inspections highlighted that Covid-19 has had a detrimental impact on students’ social skills, attendance and achievement. Research also illustrates that children who have fallen behind could benefit from the clear academic focus that would come from attending summer school. Summer school is a way to offer your child additional help, to give them more time to learn the basics of a subject. This extra time can help to build your child’s confidence and prevent them becoming lost in a subject that they find difficult to keep up with, in a more relaxed environment and smaller classes.

 Is your child facing 11+/King’s School entrance exams in the autumn term this year and you’re not sure where to start?  Is your child in Year 9 or 10 and you are concerned about their rapidly approaching GCSE exams in Maths and English?  Is your child moving schools in September and worried about moving to ‘big school’?  Would you like your child to learn in a supportive, stress-free

environment where hard work and effort are rewarded?  Would you like your child to receive expert tuition over the summer holidays with qualified and experienced teachers?  Would you like your child to grow in confidence, knowing that they have had the opportunity to fill in the gaps in their learning?  With a choice of two Centres offering different days and times throughout August you should be able to find sessions to suit your family. Each session is stand-alone, but must be pre-booked by the end of July.

REMEMBER PEN AND PAPER? In the world where every form of communication seems to be happening through a smart device, people have long forgotten the benefits of writing with good old fashioned pen and paper. Extensive research on the benefits of writing as compared to typing a text on a computer or electronic device reinforces the fact that writing information down on paper can provide advantages.

The write way to learn and remember Studies found that while computers often dominate teaching and learning, students still see the benefits of writing on paper.

Training the brain Research shows that handwriting is an important aspect of brain development and cognition, and that children who write by hand show better results and come up with more ideas than those who type on a computer. The act of writing is a highly complex motorical exercise. It requires hand movement, thus the brain is directing the hand. At the same time the brain and muscles are remembering and recalling the letters being written. Plus, thought is

required to select the appropriate words to write. So, the areas in the brain responsible for thinking, language, memory and muscle movement are activated all at the same time! If you compare that to the act of typing, It is way less difficult for your brain, thus generates less brain activity.

Remembering better It can’t be denied that writing on a PC is a much faster way of taking notes. However, if the goal is to remember better, then the preferable option is pen and paper. Note taking with a pen and paper instead of a computer, helps better digest and remember the information that is heard. Since it is not possible to literally write down everything

Snowdrops welcome for spring September for Cheeky Monkeys Get ready

a teacher is saying in a class, for example, there is a need to immediately rephrase the information and filter out crucial parts. Taking notes on a computer, is way too easy and therefore cuts out many processes that aid memory retention. While it is tempting to resort to the convenience of a keyboard, writing by pen invokes creativity and fosters ideas, so the effects are far-reaching.

Preventing online distractions Another benefit to not using a digital device is the lack of online distractions. There can be complete silence, room for thoughts, no input from the outside world, no status updates, emails etc. So, the message is, switch off ... to switch on! FIRST CLASS LEARNING PROMOTION

EDUCATION SPECIAL

POST PANDEMIC LEARNING

LEARNING IS A LIFELON As a £1.4bn package has recently been announced for the post-pandemic education programme, the focus seems to be all about how quickly our children can ‘catch-up’. Some are feeling immense pressure to get back on track. The Gazette takes an educational pit stop, because it is time to remember that sometimes the tortoise can win the race. Many suggest the Government’s figure (which is less than other countries are providing) will fall short of what is needed, particularly as the emphasis on the ‘catch up’ of lost learning seems to be stronger than the support for children in other ways, too. Undoubtedly, isolation, contact restrictions and economic shutdown have impacted the mental health of children and adolescents. And for those with special needs or disadvantages, such as disabilities, trauma experiences, already existing mental health problems, migrant background and low socioeconomic status, this has been a particularly challenging time.

Pupils’ experiences of the pandemic, and circumstances throughout it, will be very varied. Some, despite restrictions, will feel safe and mostly enjoy their time. For others, it will be challenging or even traumatic. To be able to help, we must surely understand, as comprehensively as possible, which children have suffered the most from the pandemic and in what ways. Gareth Davies, the head of the NAO, said that is crucial that the impact of catch-up arrangements is monitored, particularly on disadvantaged children, and acts on the results. This was echoed by David Laws, Executive chairman of the Education Policy Institute (EPI), who said: “If the pandemic is not to scar this generation of young people, the prime minister needs to put in place an ambitious education recovery plan, based on sound evidence and sufficient funding.”

Schools and teachers are used to supporting their pupils through challenges that they face in life – but the current situation will amplify those situations many times over.

Importantly, while the lockdown may have made certain aspects of development more difficult, this enforced period of limited activity has quite possibly resulted in some positive developmental changes too. The British Psychological Society suggests that this ‘catch up’ narrative is unhelpful and places unnecessary psychological pressure on children and young people. So, the key here is to do our best, without exacerbating stress levels. Louise Livingston of the Maria Montessori Institute asks whether we should we really be telling our children they are ‘behind’ and need to ‘catch up’? “Politicians are talking of children ‘falling behind’, or not reaching ‘school readiness’ and suggesting a more is more approach with longer hours, holiday schools and intensive academic support. Yet many teachers – and parents – realise that children are not an industrial product and speeding up the factory production line is not appropriate or helpful.” We are in unchartered territory, and only time will tell whether the support we collectively offer and are guided by, will be effective. So, for the time being, we can only turn to available research to help us to see what often happens in situations that have similarities in their impact.

There are things we can do to minimise the effect of lockdown on our children. However, it’s important to recognise that everybody’s time and home situation will be different.

Importantly, while the lockdown may have made certain aspects of development more difficult, this enforced period of limited activity has quite possibly resulted in some positive developmental changes too.

Some parents may simply not have been able to work with and help their children as much as they would have liked to. Pupils’ experiences of the pandemic, and circumstances throughout it, will be very varied. Some, despite restrictions, will feel safe and mostly enjoy their time. For others, it will be challenging or even traumatic.

My own school journey was interrupted by large gaps in my education. I might have missed lessons, and I later mostly caught up academically, yet in dealing with transience and troubles, I was not missing out on learning, and many of those experiences gave me invaluable advantages later in life.

20

This is echoed by Dr Sharie Coombes, Child Psychologist, who observes: “We know from studies that children who have had really deprived early lives - way beyond anything that coronavirus has done - can catch up with their development.” While the current situation may be unprecedented, there are studies that demonstrate that most children bounce back incredibly well after a setback. Life is full of twists, turns, surprises and disappointments but there isn’t just one way to reach a goal or destination. In the words of Oscar Wilde: “Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth learning can be taught.” Perhaps, therefore, we all need to be cautious with the given notion that children are now extremely ‘behind’ in development and learning.

Days in lockdown were an opportunity for many children to reinvent ways of play and learning, exploring their immediate environment and making the most of what they had available. “Children may benefit from learning how to deal with boredom and some level of isolation” explains Coombes, “so it’s possible that children may become more resilient in the longer term.” For instance, children are often provoked into thinking more imaginatively in unexpected times. Many people assume that creativity is an inborn talent that their kids either do or do not have. But actually, it is more skill than inborn talent, and is a key to success in nearly everything we do, being a key component of health and happiness. Creativity is not limited to artistic and musical expression, it is also essential for science, maths, and even social and emotional intelligence. Creative people are more flexible and better problem solvers, which makes them more able to adapt to technological advances and deal with change, as well as take advantage of new opportunities.

NG SKILL, NOT A SPRINT Days in lockdown were an opportunity for children to reinvent ways of play and learning, exploring their immediate environment and making the most of what they had available.

“I realized that no matter how much time we think we have; at the end of the day, what I came to appreciate was that we simply don’t spend enough quality time with our families.”

in the last year and ensure that they feel proud of what they’ve achieved so that they can build upon their strengths and continue their key learning moving forward.

“Together, parents, caregivers and teachers have done an amazing job of continuing children’s education outside the school environment, and its vital that this work isn’t diminished.” Dr. Dan O’Hare

Dr Dan O’Hare, co-chair of the British Psychological Society’s Division of Educational and Child Psychology said:

“Together, parents, caregivers and teachers have done an amazing job of continuing children’s education outside the school environment, and its vital that this work isn’t diminished.

The crisis also brought with it opportunities for personal growth and family cohesion. Tomislav Georgiev, journalist and UNICEF photographer, turned his lenses from the outside world to observe the greater value of how “these unprecedented times began to shape our younger generations to think differently about their own individual roles and how we as individuals can all contribute in our own way to find a solution to collective problems.

“The notion that children need to catch up or are ‘behind’ at school due to the pandemic reinforces the idea that children have ‘one shot’ at their education and puts them under even more pressure to perform academically after what has been a challenging and unprecedented time for everyone. “It’s important to celebrate the progress, learning and development children have made

“it is through adopting the dispositions and characteristics of the tortoise in Aesop’s fable that we are most likely to keep making strong, steady progress. “ George Gilchrist

“It’s important that children know that education and learning is a lifelong skill, not a sprint and it’s vital for their psychological wellbeing that the rhetoric around ‘catch up’ doesn’t detract from their achievements and progress.” Former school principal, author of I’m Not Different, You Are and blogger, George Gilchrist, wrote: “I believe we celebrate hares too much, and tortoises not enough. School systems are full of people racing to do lots of things, as quickly as possible. Education is not a race. Education is a relentless process of personal enlightenment, growth and development. It is through adopting the dispositions and characteristics of the tortoise in Aesop’s fable that we are most likely to keep making strong, steady progress. Such a relentless approach to personal, and professional growth, is more likely to produce deep sustainable change for ourselves and our systems. Adoption of a slow and steady approach to our growth may also help us deal with some of the difficulties we face with regard to teacher retention and leader recruitment. “We live in a society that is driven by instant results, instant success ... often ignoring or failing to see the hours and years of effort people have put into achieving what some characterise as ‘overnight success.’ “You only have to look at the life stories of people like Mo Farrah, Ed Sheeran, Rodger Federer, Nelson Mandela, Bill Gates, to name but a few, to see how their successes were grounded in a mix of years of hard work and application, set-backs, good luck and bad luck, but driven by a relentless desire to succeed and get better. “If you have read any of Malcolm Gladwell’s books, he recounts hundreds of cases of successful entrepreneurs and outliers, who have gone on to great success. Their histories grounded in the same characteristics displayed by those mentioned above, as well as the tortoise in the fable.” Children are remarkably resilient and although we don’t know everything, we can all hope that the punchline is that if there continues to be a concerted and collective effort and understanding from parents, teachers, social workers, psychiatrists and politicians, it is entirely possible that this generation of children can emerge from the crisis ready and able to cope and thrive admirably in the post-Covid-19 world.

To be tutored, or not to be tutored, that is the question When it comes to interventions that can help students who need additional support, tutoring readily comes to mind. As educators will attest, tutoring ranks among the most widespread, versatile, and potentially transformative instruments within today’s educational toolkit. Whilst schools were closed, and exams cancelled, my daughter was sent a full curriculum of work every day she’s been kept busy. She has also been given tutoring in maths in the past when she was losing confidence in her abilities and it definitely helped her. I’m aware that not all children will be in such a good place at the moment, but there must be many parents wondering if extra tuition might be a consideration.

paper. It’s a personal relationship which is important because a top tutor is a highly educated, highachieving, and often highly talented individual. If they’ve graduated from a top university they know what it means to work hard. They know about discipline, about time management and about having a positive attitude. Introducing your child to such an individual means providing him or her with an excellent role model, and often a friend too.

Having help at home is invaluable in correcting problems that emerge in the classroom. A good tutor will identify a child’s weaknesses and take proactive steps to strengthen them. This might mean going over maths problems, helping to choose the right books, guiding revision, or more generally re-teaching topics that have already been covered in class.

There’s also the fact that in families where both parents work it’s not always possible to be at home supervising the children. In such a situation the support of someone reliable that shares your values and attitudes to education is invaluable.

If a teacher says that homework is routinely being done badly, or if your child complains that they’re struggling to understand what’s being studied in class it might be worth enlisting extra help before these problems get out of hand. Tutoring is not simply a teacher sitting at a desk with a pupil and telling them what to put down onto

Tutoring can simply mean extra maths lessons on a Thursday afternoon. But it can also mean your child spending time with someone who invests time in their personal development, teaches them new skills and good habits and is as much a positive role model as a teacher. One of the key benefits of private tutoring is that lessons can be customised to match your child’s learning preferences. Lessons can be tailored to your child’s pace, specific needs and goals. It also

gives your child the space to talk openly about what they’re really struggling with, which they may not feel confident doing in class. Some children learn best through visual aids where others learn best through read-write… some learn better through movement, while others learn better when they speak out loud. Tutorean, an online platform that connects private tutors with students offers a quick questionnaire where you can find out a little more about your child’s learning style. www.tutorean.co.uk/questionnaire/start The British Psychology Society suggest that where extra schooling is a strategy, that it should remain a quality-over-quantity approach with a strong focus on supporting children through socialisation and play. Overall, as part of a well-rounded and comprehensively considered process, if a child is frustrated with their lack of progress, or worried about upcoming exams, and is eager to receive the additional support, tutoring and summer schools can definitely be worth trying. Only you and your child can ultimately decide whether this is right for you.

Hampton Vale Primary Academy At last, the summer has finally arrived and it has been wonderful to see the blue skies over Hampton Vale Primary Academy. As restrictions have eased we have resumed our extracurricular clubs and the children are thoroughly enjoying taking part in sports, drama games and Forest School activities. Thank you to all the children who are taking part and thank you too to all the parents and carers who have taken time to email or speak to the teachers directly to say thank you and let us know how much their children are enjoying these clubs. We are also continuing in our efforts to transform the school grounds and at the moment we are focusing our attention on our Early Years Garden which has been renamed as Hampton Village. The old equipment has been removed, new artificial grass has been laid and a sandpit has also been installed which will form our construction zone. Although it is far from finished, it has been lovely to see the children enjoying and playing in this remodelled space together.

Over the next few weeks a park area, garden centre, café, shop, fire station and house will also be taking shape. This dedicated role-play space has been specifically designed for our younger children and will include a variety of play equipment, toys and costumes to support the children’s role play adventures or let’s pretend activities. We are all very excited about this space as it will build on the children’s confidence, develop their listening skills, as well as broaden their vocabulary. At the same time, we hope that this space will also allow the children to learn about empathy and understanding from different perspectives, and who knows, it may also spark future ambitions!

Holme Church of England Primary Academy

As we start back after half-term we are looking forward with optimism to the final part of the academic year. Our afterschool clubs will see our children enjoying: Multiskills run by Peterborough United, Art Club, Yoga, Cricket and Football. Year 5 and 6 are off to Grafham Water for an exciting day visit soon, so this will give the children and staff the opportunity to be adventurous and challenge themselves. It should also be a lot of fun!

Thank you to the Holme Reading Rooms and our Friends of Holme School for their generous donations to our school. We have ordered some fantastic new resources for the field, to encourage musical creativity and social development. Miss Williams and Miss Weeks (our Key Stage 2 teachers) have given out parts for the end of

year production and the children have begun to learn their lines. Things are slowly beginning to get back to normal. We are keen for our children to have as many of the summer term experiences as possible. Mrs Kelly Thomas (Head of School)

No Fault Divorce, At Last

Here are a couple of questions we have been asked recently. Question: I’ve been going over some old tax returns to try to track down some capital losses. However, whilst doing this, I’ve noticed that I missed some figures, including my considerable pension contributions, off the 2018/19 return. From what I can see online, I’ve just missed the deadline to amend it. Is there any way to claim the extra relief? It’s worth around £2,000 which would be very helpful at the moment? Answer: You should make a claim under the provisions for Overpayment Relief. This permits a claim to be made up to four years after the end of the tax year in question where there are no other means to recover the overpaid tax. You need to be very careful when drafting the claim, as it must contain specified information. It must also be signed by you personally, an accountant can’t sign it on your behalf (though they could help you draft the letter).

The very long-awaited Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020 is to come into force on 6 April next year. This is a lot later than originally hoped and it would seem that the delay has been due to the IT changes necessary on the Government online divorce platform. But the 6th April 2022 is now fixed on the parliamentary record. So those of you who have been holding off starting divorce proceedings on the traditional grounds, can now work towards this new timetable. The new law will allow married couples to divorce without attributing blame as a reason to end the marriage. The current law only provides for “blameless” divorce if you have been separated for two years, or five years.

Question: Following the Covid-19 pandemic, I’ve decided to change my year end to 31 March (from 31 December) in order to utilise overlap relief that I’ve been carrying forward. However, I’m not sure exactly what profits to include on my return? Answer: This will depend on exactly how you enact the change. If you prepare accounts for the 15 months to 31 March 2021, your return for 2020/21 will include the results for the full 15 months, less the overlap relief. If you prepare accounts for the three months to 31 March 2021, you will have two accounting periods (one 12 months and one three months) in the basis period for 2020/21 and you will include the results from both, again deducting the overlap relief. Of course, it’s possible that you are referring to your current year, i.e. you will prepare accounts to 31 March 2022. In that case, the change won’t take place until the 2021/22 year and you should just report your results to 31 December 2020 on the 2020/21 return in the usual way. Do you have any tax or business questions, if so email Pete Bird of Bird & Co (info@birdandco.ltd) and if of general interest we will publish them here?

Otherwise, the majority of divorces where the spouses agree they can’t wait for two years, require allegations of unreasonable behaviour to be raised by one against the other, or agreeing that adultery has taken place. Neither ground is exactly the best start to ending a marriage in a civil and amicable manner. The new law will permit spouses to divorce after being apart for a limited period of time. The exact Rules will be finalised over the coming months and your local family law specialist will be able to provide more details closer to the date. So watch this space…..

Choosing the right

Care Home

BLUEBIRD CARE IS RECRUITING. See page 6

By Tom Hancock

Care of the elderly is an emotive subject, and has become even more so during the pandemic. Whether you are choosing a care home for yourself, or searching on behalf of an elderly relative, you want to make sure you get it right. First you need to decide on the level of care required. Residential homes are for people who can no longer cope with daily activities in their home. They may also need help washing, bathing, dressing and going to the toilet. Nursing homes are for those people who require regular nursing care, by or under the supervision of a qualified nurse. Residents tend to have no mobility or severely limited mobility, mental confusion, and may be faecally incontinent. As with any home, location is important. You may want to choose a place where family or friends can visit regularly? Once a location has been decided on, select as many care homes as you can and visit every one of them. The Care Quality Commission (www.cqc. org.uk) have over 18000 care homes registered with them and publish all their inspection reports online, so this is a good place to start. Two other

excellent sources of information are the websites www.yourcarehome.co.uk and www.carehomesupport.co.uk. Groundwork is good, but there is no substitute for visiting and assessing the standard of service yourself. This is harder at the moment but that option should still be offered, even with all the restrictions in place. Begin your inspection by ringing to arrange appointments to visit the premises. Ask yourself if the phone was answered in a friendly way. Did the person answering the phone sound stressed or abrupt? When you visit, what are your first impressions? Is the place bright and clean, comfortable, welcoming and airy? Did the receptionist make eye contact and smile? Were you offered a cup of tea while you waited? What are the noise levels like? Are there any unpleasant odours? Look at the residents and chat to them if you have an opportunity. Do they look clean, well-cared for and happy?

Monitor how much interaction there is between the staff and the residents. Is there lots of friendly chatter? Check to see if call lights over doors are on and being left unanswered. This might indicate staffing problems. Check the floor, especially in corners and under beds. This is a good indicator of whether standards of hygiene and care are high throughout. When you’ve reached a decision, take good financial and legal advice. What are the fees and what do they include? Can you afford them on a long-term basis? What happens if funds dry up? What is the protocol for making a complaint? Consult the Office of Fair Trading ‘Fair Terms for Care’ booklet to see whether the contract you’ll be asked to sign is a fair one. Ask as many questions as you can up front, and you will help ensure that any move you or your elderly relative makes will be the right one.

Hampton Harriers Success Story If I had been asked a number of years ago if I ran, I would have said ‘no way!’ The younger me would have avoided it at all costs due to being unfit and self-conscious. In the past, if I had been asked if I ran, I would have said ‘no way!’ The younger me would have avoided running at all costs due to being unfit and self-conscious. A few years ago, after having my little girl, I ventured into running and, to my surprise, I liked it! Perhaps it was more the ‘buzz’ that comes from finishing, more than actually having to get out there and do it, however, I was eager to improve, despite often lacked the motivation to persevere with momentum, or to push myself and test my capabilities. Becoming a member of Hampton Harriers running group changed everything for the positive. The group helped me to realise that I am stronger than I think I am, and that even the biggest mental challenges can be overcome with continued effort and focus, and, most importantly, to be able to achieve within your own capability, at your own pace and within your own personal/work schedules.

by Wendy Plimley

The encouragement and support from Jon & James – the founders - and all the other members, whether via your group posts or on a group run, is great. I had reservations about joining this group and whether it would come with pressures or expectations, but that honestly couldn’t be further from the truth. I have personally achieved so much over the last year, such as running my first half marathon, and I have also now completed three more, with my furthest distance being 14 miles. All of this whilst improving both my mental and physical health, and none of which I could have achieved without the support of the group and my husband, who is also a member. I encourage anyone interested in joining Hampton Harriers to do it as you will open yourself up to a group of amazing people who totally understand the pressures and strains of everyday life and who will support you on your running journey. It’s the best thing I did!

Summer Hair Care

Strong sun, high temperatures, humidity and pool or sea water will damage your hair, leaving it dry and brittle. Try taking a gentler approach to your hairstyling in the summer months. Use a mild shampoo and when you do wash your hair, finish with a cool or cold rinse to seal the cuticles. Try to limit hair treatments such as bleaching, and cut back on the use of heated hair styling tools such as curlers and hair straighteners. If your hair is long enough, put it into a loose bun and tuck the ends out of sight, as this is the most vulnerable part. Pulling your hair back in this way also mean you don’t have a parting, which will prevent sunburn on your scalp – although sunscreen all around the hairline is important.

If you don’t have long hair, have a parting and don’t want to wear a hat, it’s essential that you apply sun lotion to your scalp. Your hair might look a little greasy during the day, but that’s better than the bad dandruff look that a peeling scalp will give you. Before going into a pool or the sea, wet your hair with plain water as this will reduce the absorption of chlorine or salt. After your swim, rinse your hair with plain water again and use a mild shampoo at the end of each day, to ensure those chemicals and salt aren’t continuing to do their worst.

BRUSHING UP on dog tooth hygiene Pamela Game@ Pampered Pooch www.Pamperdpooch.online

Ultrasound teeth cleaning reaches deep below the gum line to kill germs and bacteria and cleans the teeth and gums to prevent the build-up of plaque and tartar. At the same time, it increases the blood flow to the gums to heal wounds and stop bleeding. If used regularly, the ultrasonic toothbrush can prevent you from going to the vet and cleaning your dog’s teeth under a risky anaesthetic. My friend recently had to take his dog to the vet to remove 4 teeth; the cost was £750! So, it is important to prevent this by cleaning your dog’s teeth. You already know that not taking care of your dog’s teeth can lead to periodontal disease, a condition that results in bleeding gums, bad breath and ultimately, tooth loss. Periodontal disease starts under the gum line with a substance called plaque, which is made up of bacteria but guess what - they can’t tell you if they are in pain.

Ultrasonic cleaning can help reduce decay by 75% and takes only 30-50mins for the first session

GROOMING

Just like people, dogs get toothaches and tooth infections. One of the most common reasons for a dog tooth infection is tooth decay because we don’t brush our dog’s teeth.

Pampered Pooch is offering a FREE 10 MIN TRIAL SESSION with every full groom booked in July and August. (See advert below). PLUS ... when you sign up for a year’s teeth maintenance at £65 this gives you 4 SESSIONS AND A FREE TOOTHBRUSH AND PASTE FOR HOME CLEANING. This would normally cost well over £100.

staysafe Protect your Garden from Green-fingered Thieves this Summer Over the past year, many of us of have spent more and more time in our gardens and outdoor spaces.

During lockdown, our gardens have become more important than ever; as we have grown our own vegetables, added decorative lighting and ornaments, invested in furniture and splashed out on hot tubs and outdoor bars. So as our outdoor spaces become an extension of our home, we may have invested a lot of time, effort and money into making them look fabulous; and that could also have meant buying additional tools, a new lawnmower or a range of other gardening gadgets. But when considering our outdoor space and belongings, how many of us pay the same attention to garden security as we do our own home? Did you know that 9 out of 10 household thefts occur in the garden - with our best outdoor furniture, garden ornaments, power tools and ornaments, barbeque and ladders among the top items?

So, when it comes to what you already have, think about the value and security of our outdoor possessions in the same way you view those inside the home. Here are some simple precautions:  Take a walk around your garden and check things that may be appealing to a thief - an unlocked back gate or shed (particularly if the shed contains expensive garden tools / machinery or bikes).  Get a reputable locksmith to secure gates and sheds.  Lock away ladders or anything which could be used to gain entry to your home.  CCTV surveillance will allow you to view your garden and any unwelcomed activity from your home.  Install some sensory / outdoor lighting.  Alarm the garage to provide additional security or think about installing garage roller shutter doors.  If your fencing is flimsy, broken panels could provide easy access to intruders, so consider investing in some new and improved fencing or panels.  Pack away out of sight any garden tools or equipment. Even if you take a break from cutting the front lawn, keep your mower out of reach of opportunist thieves.  Secure expensive plants with wire pegs dug into the ground around the root ball.  Use a security pen to mark valuable items, like garden furniture, ornaments or trampolines, with your postcode.  Consider defensive planting like prickly hedges or shrubs.  Join a local Neighbourhood Watch Group www.ourwatch.org.uk – where you and your neighbours can look out for each other. When thinking about having any security, garden maintenance or crime prevention work carried out in your home and / or garden, always use someone reputable and trustworthy.
