The wildlife of Hampton - the robin Perhaps the most seasonal bird for this month is the robin. Christmas cards feature this attractive little bird, making it feel essential to the festive season. It’s been a part of Christmas since the Victorian period. The reason for this is unsure but could be related to at least three stories. bird’s breast red. The third story is related to Jesus’ death. It is said that a plain brown bird was witness to the crucifixion. This bird tried to take a thorn from Christ’s head and in doing so some blood fell on the bird’s breast, colouring it red.

The first suggests that robins appear due to the fact that Victorian postmen were nicknamed Robin Redbreasts, due to the redness of their uniform (they wore red coats), and Christmas cards were delivered even on Christmas Day. The second relates to Mary being cold in the stable where Jesus was born. The story goes that a brown bird alighted and flapped its wings to fan the dying embers of the fire, but in doing so a spark leapt from the fire and scorched the

Perhaps you may have seen them, but personally I rarely see a robin around Hampton. Although I did see one in our garden recently and would love to see more. They are relatively easy birds to recognise through their song once you know what to listen for. I can only describe it as melodious and pleasant to listen to. Helpfully too they sing throughout the year. They can even sing at night, usually around streetlights. I have often heard the chirrup of a bird around Hampton at night and was puzzled by it. Perhaps it is the robin. To us they seem such friendly birds. We only have to start digging and they appear, hungry for the worms that have been disturbed. But amongst themselves robins are aggressively territorial; chasing off any rivals from their area, sometimes using a spade handle as a handy lookout post. Usually no more than one robin will inhabit a garden, unless it is their mate.

Sadly three quarters of robins die before they are one year old, caught mostly by predators, and ten per cent die defending their territory. Harsh winter weather can also have a severe impact on robin numbers. A robin can use up to 10% of its body weight during one cold winter’s night, and unless it is able to feed well every day, to replenish its reserves, a prolonged cold spell can be fatal. Normally the fat reserves built up by the robin will keep it going for a few days, but death is more likely if a cold spell continues into a second week. So we can obviously help by providing food on birdtables, especially if it has snowed. The favourite birdtable treat for robins is mealworms. Other useful foods are meaty kitchen scraps, fat, cheese, cake and biscuit crumbs, and dried fruit. Peanuts are also taken, but they are better shredded or crushed than whole.

Christmas Opening Hours 2014

Over the Christmas and New Year period we will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, Thursday 25th December and Friday 26th December and on New Year’s Day, Thursday 1st January, but normal opening hours will apply for the rest of Christmas week and New Year week.

After the Christmas Holiday we will reopen on Monday 29th December at 8.30am and after the New Year we will reopen on Friday 2nd January at 8.30am; phones will be open from 8am on both days. Appointments on Monday 22nd, Tuesday 23rd & the morning of Wednesday 24th December, and in the following week Monday 29th, to Wednesday 31st. , and Friday 2nd of January will all be available to book on the day and prebookable appointments will not be offered on these days. Christmas Eve Afternoon appointments will be available throughout the afternoon with GP and Nurse Practitioner, but these will be for emergencies only. If you need to see a Doctor or Nurse urgently on these days please phone the surgery and you will be offered an emergency appointment or a phone call.

As we ask for 48 hours’ notice for repeat medication can we ask that you request any medication needed over Christmas by 6 pm on Monday 22nd December, and for the New Year by 6pm on Monday 29th December so we can arrange this for you. Our baby immunisation clinic on Wednesday 24th December will be cancelled. When the surgery is closed if you require urgent medical assistance or advice which cannot wait until the surgery re-opens, please call NHS111. For life threatening situations call 999. Thank you! First of all I would, on behalf of the members of Hampton WI, like to thank each and every one of you who came and supported our Christmas Fair last weekend. We appreciate your continued support and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Our November Meeting saw us have our AGM and whilst the business side of our meeting was important, we much preferred making the homemade sweets afterwards. Who wouldn’t? Sweets or stuffy formal stuff? Hmm that’s a hard decision. We have our Christmas Meeting coming up and if you are considering visiting us this would be a great meeting to do so. It’s our Glitter and Sparkle Meeting where we will be eating some festive homemade food and enjoying some homemade (well maybe not homemade) festive drink! Wear something sparkly (clothing, a brooch or hair slide etc) and be prepared to have a little giggle. If you are coming to our December meeting, please be aware that the meeting is on THURSDAY 11th DECEMBER and NOT the usual third Thursday. Please make a note of this change. Our January meeting will be back to our normal weekly slot. Finally, we would like to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and peaceful New Year!

Donate an advent calendar for Christmas

Hampton Allotments

Advent Calendars have been a long held tradition of Christmas for many children nationwide. However, the excitement of opening each window, and counting down the days to Santa’s arrival, is something that many children will not get to experience this year.

As residents with allotments will be aware, during 2014 the Parish Council has taken on the lease for both the HamptonVale and Hampton Hargate Allotments this year, protecting them for use as allotments for the next 125 years. Both sites are jointly managed by the Hampton Parish Council through the Allotments Sub-Committee which meets four times a year.

Recently, comedian Jason Manford has called the nation to donate Advent Calendars to their local food banks so families without the luxuries of everyday life can enjoy something a little bit special at Christmas. The people of Peterborough have also got involved and rushed to donate items at the local food bank, Serpentine Green Shopping Centre in Hampton, to help out those less fortunate in the local area. There is still time to help out by generously donating Calendars and other food items at two upcoming collections at Serpentine Green Shopping Centre in Hampton on November 28th and 29th on the run up to the all-important day, December 1st. Make sure you don’t pass by the chance to help out local residents who do not have the luxuries that we all do. The Committee formed of four Parish Councillors and two nominated representatives from each of the Hampton Allotment Associations sets has agreed new leases for all plot holders set the annual rents for 2015. The Parish Council will collect the annual rents, including the annual Allotment Association membership fees for lease holders which is passed on to the Allotment Association Treasurers in the form of a grant, and will in future consider any amendments or updates to the tenants lease in line with current legislation and good practice, review the annual grant to the Hampton Hargate Community Allotment Gardens Association (HHCAGA), which will continue to be largely self-managed as well as any other administrative and practical management issues which arise throughout the year. The Parish Clerk is the nominated Allotments Manager for both sites.

With the support of the Allotments Sub-Committee, and the HHCAGA, it is hoped that in the future the Hampton Vale Community Allotment Gardens Association will develop a similar self-management philosophy to the Hargate Association allowing them to also apply for grants in recognition of tasks undertaken by the Management Committee such as maintaining the roads, structures and communal areas in good order. If you are interested in an allotment plot you need to be on the Hampton Vale Electoral Roll, for Hampton Vale Allotments or the Hampton Hargate Electoral Roll for the Hampton Hargate Allotments (or able to provide a recent utility bill as proof of residence). This is because the cost of the leases and infrastructure works on the allotments are funded by the Parish Council whose income is largely from the precept collected on behalf of the Parish by the Peterborough City Council through the Council Tax system.

At the time of writing there will be plots available on the Hampton Vale site in the Spring and there is a short waiting list for Hampton Hargate plots - so if you are interested in growing your own fruit, vegetables or flowers please email with your details to hamptonparishcouncil@gmail.com

Froglife volunteers manage Hampton Nature Reserve (HNR) on behalf of the landowners, O&H. Activities includes pond restoration and creation, scalloping reedbeds and scrub, and coppicing trees.

This winter we are focussing on the woodbelt north of the reserve, opening up glades and burning off brash. This is an excellent introduction to the site; sheltered, good access and a beautiful day out on a crisp sunny morning. Teams go out every Thursday and two Saturdays per month to create brash bonfires on which we cook our baked potato lunch. We will also be continuing our tradition of having a Christmas Work Party on the last session before the holidays, where volunteers old and new are invited to a super-sized bonfire with mince pies and seasonal treats.

These traders often cold call and offer to carry-out repairs which are poor quality, unnecessary and charged at extortionate prices, sometimes even driving the victim to the bank to withdraw money or threatening them.

Hampton Netball The Hampton ‘Back to Netball’ sessions have been running over the summer and have been a great success. Here is a little testimonial from one the ladies that joined us at Hampton Ladies Netball Club “I am sure I am one of many who once had a love for a sport but for various reasons lost touch. After moving back home to my family in March this year and my sister already being a member of ‘Panthers’ which is the youngest of the adult teams, I started to hear a lot about Hampton Netball Club and how much it had to offer. This made me think it was about time I got back into a sport I once loved and Hampton Netball welcomed me with open arms to their ‘Back to Netball’ sessions on a Saturday morning. I started back in June and after just two sessions I put my name forward for the winter league and joined their Tuesday night training. I was then really fortunate to be put into a great team, newly named ‘Hampton Tigers’, where I continue to get a lot of support and everyone is really committed. We had our first match a few weeks ago, of which was my first in 8 years! We didn’t win, but it was just a 3 goal difference and I can’t wait to complete the winter league. I will continue to push myself and build on my skills at the training Hampton Netball provide.

Hampton FC Hampton FC Blue U/12 have pleasure in extending their gratitude to their long running partner ‘Top Dog Systems’ for their generosity in sponsoring a new 2014/2015 Home & Away football kit. The partnership continues to grow much like the boys as we look forward to a great season of games, competing in both league and Cup.

As we approach the Christmas season, there are many words, greetings and messages shared. But there is no message that matches the message of Christmas itself, a message found in the words of the Bible: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” Jesus gave up the glories of heaven and came to earth over 2000 years ago as a baby, born supernaturally. He came at God’s timing in fulfillment of many prophecies, born in the squalor of a stable in Bethlehem. “Emmanuel”, which means, “God with us”. He brought a message of love and forgiveness. The true message of Christmas makes all the difference in the world. It is a reliable message. It is a good news message. It is a personal message that changed lives 2000 years ago and still changes lives today. Christmas is right around the corner and Peterborough have a lot to offer residents who wish to get right into the spirit of the season. Nene Park have a wide programme of festivities at Ferry meadows Country Park. The main event takes place on Saturday 13th December with the Christmas Fair. The event promises a day filled with attractions, including the chance to meet some of the nativity’s animal stars. Peterborough Cathedral kicks off its packed schedule of Christmas services on 30th November with the Advent Sunday Service. The annual Christingle service takes place on December 20th with the Christmas Eve service kicking off at 16.00 and the Christmas Day service taking place at 08.00. If you need an excuse to take the kids to see Santa this December then Peterborough Arena’s new Santa’s Barn is it. The centre is open on various days throughout November and December and offers up to two hours of festive fun for guests, as well as a special gift from the big man himself. Other Santa’s Grottos to keep your eye on in the local area include Serpentine Green Shopping Centre, Dobbies Garden Centre and of course Queensgate’s offering, located in the North Square of the centre. If theatre is more of your thing, then make sure you head over to The Cresset theatre to see This Morning’s Alison Hammond in the magical rendition of Aladdin. The Key Theatre also has a pantomime this year in the form of Jack and the Beanstalk. Surely nothing can beat the prospect of an afternoon enjoying a good panto, one of Christmas’s best loved traditions. For another winter tradition you can’t forget Ice Skating. Planet Ice in Bretton is open throughout the Christmas holidays and even has the chance to register for a FREE Christmas Morning skate if you register your interest online, this is a chance that you cant afford to pass by. Popular city centre venues the Brewery Tap and Charters Bar have joined forces with Grasshopper Productions to raise much needed funds for Sue Ryder’s Thorpe Hall Hospice Appeal and need your help. They are looking for 200 Santas to join them on their Santa Crawl. The Santa Crawl will take place on Saturday 13th December, the event a festive themed pub crawl will kick off at 3:30pm from the Brewery Tap in Westgate, with promotional offers, live music and fun games for all Santa’s along the way, the Santa’s will move around the city centre visiting North Street Bar, The Solstice and The City Club before reaching the final venue Charters Bar where the Santa’s will be able to dance the night away to the funky sounds of Groove Cartel.

Take the turkey out of the fridge, cover with foil and allow it to come to room temperature. Do the same with the stuffing and butter so that it softens for the morning. With all the newly created space, fill up the fridge with wines, mineral water and fresh juice

Early December Order your turkey or buy a frozen one now. To work out what size you need, count on serving 450g per person. A frozen turkey will need 4–5 days to thaw. Make and freeze your mince pies. Think about the tabletop decorations if you’re planning something special. (Check out ABC Meats advert on page 30 or Moor Farm Meats below).

One week before Christmas Start to defrost the turkey at the back of the fridge. Write your shopping list and purchase all non-perishables (don’t forget pet food). Buy milk in cartons and freeze in case of emergency.

Two days before Christmas Make cranberry sauce and store in the fridge. For stuffings and bread sauce, you will need stale bread. Cut and cube it now and lay it out on a baking tray in a single layer. Make sure all napkins and tablecloths are washed and ironed. Wash or polish

Christmas Eve morning Pick up fresh turkey. Do last minute shopping. Prepare turkey gravy. Defrost mince pies. Prepare your chosen pudding and refrigerate. If you’re serving a traditional pudding, make brandy butter and refrigerate.

Christmas Eve afternoon Prepare stuffings. Don’t refrigerate, but leave covered in a cool place. The stuffings should not be too cold when you stuff the turkey. Prepare the vegetables. Peel potatoes and put in cold water in the fridge. Prepare other vegetables and store in plastic bags in the fridge. Make bread sauce. Cover tightly with cling film and store in the fridge. Set the table.

8.15am Make the bread sauce if you haven’t already. If you are using a warming oven, put in the required plates and serving dishes. Set up coffee and tea trays for later. 11:30am Prepare sausage and bacon rolls for cooking. Reheat bread sauce and place it in a jug with butter on top to melt over the surface, and keep warm. Noon: Start steaming the Christmas pudding. If you’re drinking red wine with your meal, you may want to give it time to breathe.; open now. You’ve survived the morning, well done! Pour yourself a glass of bucks fizz to celebrate! 12:45pm: Make the roast potatoes and prepare saucepans of boiling water for sprouts and any other vegetables. 1:15pm: Remove turkey from oven, cover loosely with foil and leave to rest. 1:30pm: Check bacon rolls, remove and keep warm. 1:45pm: Put sprouts on to cook and gravy on to heat. While they are cooking, dish up food into serving dishes and carve the turkey. Check Christmas pudding. 2:00pm:

Meanwhile, Hampton Yem Rock Choir has become the 150th group to put themselves on Hamptons’ fully interactive map. Showing exactly what is going on where, the map also features places to go, eat, relax, shop, take the children – plus links to local services and some of the thriving businesses based in the Hamptons.

As of this month, we’ve made some changes to Hampton’s interactive map so you can now post details of events going on within the Hampton area.

The rock choir will meet on Friday evenings at Hampton’s new CSK Church on Silver Hill. Said organiser Colin Hawcroft: “Singing is great fun and everyone is welcome. There’s no audition. All you need is enthusiasm!”

Since its’ launch the map has been used by clubs, community groups and businesses to let others know what they do and how to get in touch with them. We’re hoping the introduction of an ‘events’ category to the map will make it an even more useful guide to Hampton life.

Explained O&H Hampton general manager Roger Tallowin: “Hampton Hargate and Vale may be well-established but we still have new people arriving all the time. Our interactive map aims to show them, and anyone on the lookout for particular services or for things to do, exactly what is going on in the Hamptons.

As with all the ‘pins’ already added to the Hampton map, posting details of your event is completely free of charge.

“Sometimes there’s a tendency to think of new developments as soulless places. What the map shows is that Hampton is literally brimming with soul – and heart!”

The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies Christmas is just around the corner and that can only mean one thing…Big movies! Keeping your pets safe at Christmas Enjoy the festive celebrations but remember to plan ahead and think about your furry family creatures (and maybe not so furry!). There will be plenty of indulgences, activities, fun and family frolics but keep your furbabies safe by not feeding sultanas, raisins and currants to dogs (can cause kidney failure), check presents for chocolate and food that could be stolen and eaten, before placing under your tree, and avoid putting chocolate tree decorations up...easy pickings for canine friends! Glass baubles can shatter, cats love to play with tinsel and chew it, electric wires can be chomped on... Excitement levels are always high but allow your pets plenty of peace and quiet and space, especially if they are not used to it. When all has calmed down in the new year, make sure you are up to date with routine worming, flea treatment and vaccinations for your feline, canine and leporine (rabbit) friends to keep them in the best of health. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

The children have been practising extremely hard and I am sure all their hard work will be reflected in their performances on the night! Thank you to everyone who attended our Friends Christmas Fayre on Friday 21st November. As always it was a fun filled afternoon with lots of Christmas cheer. We have also been busy with lots of activities and events this term. Years 5 and 6 have been to visit the Black Country Museum, Year 6 have taken part in a cross country event, Key Stage 1 children were treated to a lively performance of Sleeping Beauty by M&M productions and once again the Yamaha music school came in to see our Key Stage 2 children to showcase their drumming talents! Our Powerdown fortnight took place towards the end of November. The children learnt all about energy saving through a series of different lessons and activities and the week ended with an exciting afternoon of reading by torchlight in buddy groups. In fundraising news, we have had two non- uniform days recently, both for extremely good causes. One for Children in Need and one for Jeans for Genes. Thank you to everyone who supported these events. Also we welcome Mrs Anne-Marie Venters this month, who joins us as School Business Manager. And finally, our Bike It Crew had a trip to Stillwells Nature reserve at the end of October. They attended a cycle skills session the week before and then on the day, they cycled from school to the nature reserve and back. Whilst at the reserve the children went bug hunting and made nature crowns!

School is simply splendiferous! The children in the Red Apple class have settled into school life with magnificent ease, skipping into school with huge smiley faces ready to embrace the day ahead. The children have been busy making new friends, listening to lots of stories, learning new songs and talking about people who are special to them. The children have liked playing both inside the classroom and outside in the Foundation Stage garden, and have particularly enjoyed the change in the weather, being outside in the rain. We even conducted an experiment to see what would happen to paper when it gets wet – as such we have decided not to put books outside when the rain is falling. The highlight of our first half term has been welcoming our parents into class to stay and play with us. It was great to see so many parents playing with their children, constructing with the building bricks, making birthday cakes with the play dough, reading stories and making gravel cakes in the garden. We thank the parents for really entering into the spirit of Reception, and joining us as we sat on the carpet, participating in either our phonic learning or our number rhyme session. We have so much to look forward to as we move into autumn, and the learning which will take place as we are inspired by the celebrations which will be upon us in the next few weeks.
