Did you notice the wonderful array of bright blue damselflies during the early summer? There seemed to be more of them this year; or is it that I haven’t been observant enough during previous years? They flitted along the paths near the lakes and we even had quite a few fly in and out of our conservatory when the doors were wide open. Damselflies are such light, delicate creatures, usually found around open water, where they lay their eggs. These hatch after a few weeks or even months (depending on the species) into a larvae, or nymph, which then lives amongst the pondweed. The larvae are voracious eaters and will eat anything they can catch, usually other aquatic larvae and bloodworms. They spend most of their life under water, often taking around a year to reach adulthood. When fully grown the larva (nymph) climbs out of the water onto vegetation and sheds its skin to emerge as an adult damselfly. The adults are carnivorous and will eat any small insect, but their diet is mostly midges and mosquitoes. Reassuringly they don’t bite or sting. Damselflies are much smaller than dragonflies. There are other differences as well. Damselflies fold their wings against their body, whereas dragonfly wings are held at right angles to their body when at rest. Damselfly eyes do not meet but dragonfly eyes touch each other. That is if you can ever get close enough to notice this! Also, reassuringly for Hampton is that damselflies are indicators of clean water; they can only breed in oxygen-rich and unpolluted water. That has to be good news for our lakes and ponds. The sad fact is, though, that adult damselflies only live for a few weeks, leaving us bereft of their colour and beauty.

‘Get muddy for money’ brought the community together for a successful boot-camp style fundraiser, in aid of Sue Ryder, towards the Thorpe Hall Capital Appeal fundraising for a new hospice.

Twin Peaks Star! On 6th June Luke Swindells (age 14, Year 9 at Hampton College) completed the 3 Peaks Challenge, climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in 23.5 hours with his cousins to raise money for Aintree University Hospital, Liverpool as they had treated his Uncle Ron who recently died of cancer. They have raised in excess of £4,000.

6

The event was held on Saturday 21st June, at the Beaumont Way sports field in Hampton Hargate. Over 30 people participated, raising a massive £1700 in sponsorship. The day including a boot-camp style workout and obstacle course, with army crawls through muddy wet grass, hay bale hurdles, tyre runs and lorry tyre drags! Get muddy for money

We love a cake or two here at Hampton WI and with that in mind we knew our Girlie Cream Tea meeting this month was bound to be a success. I mean who can resist a selection of homemade cakes or scones served with jam and cream? We had a great evening filled with lots of non-stop gossip and giggles plus making plans for our extra curricular evenings out and it seems anything goes so long as it involves a glass or two of wine! We are a mixed group of very talented ladies. We have a multitude of crafters, quilters, artists and cake

makers, stay at home mums, business owners and a couple of grandmothers too but that has not stopped us making firm friends and enjoying our many and varied differences. If you want to learn new skills, make new links with other women and enjoy good company, then Hampton WI offers you all of that and more. We meet every third Thursday at Hampton Children’s Centre and our meetings start at 7pm. If you don’t want to come alone, then bring a friend! See you soon!

The Little Yellow Duck Project The Little Yellow Duck Project has been leaving hand-crafted little yellow ducks around Hampton for people to find, bringing happiness and to raise awareness of organ/tissue donation. Each little duck has a special tag which invites the finder to register their duck at thelittleyellowduckproject.org to gently encourage people to sign the organ/ tissue donation register. The LYD Project hope that the stories and information found at their website will encourage people to pledge their own random act of kindness by registering to donate blood, bone marrow, organs tissues: an act which can save and transform the life of others. The project has been created in memory of Clare Cruickshank, who sadly died waiting for a double-lung transplant. It has been inspired by her generosity, her sense of fun and her love of little yellow ducks. If you have found a duck or would like to get involved with LYD Project, check out their website thelittleyellowduckproject.org

Theft of catalytic converters doubles in the last 3 years Across the UK, thefts of catalytic converters from motor vehicles have more than doubled over the past three years and local reports of this type of crime continue to rise. Motorists can be left with repair bills of thousands of pounds. Thieves are ripping out the devices because they contain precious metals such as platinum and palladium. The global rise in the price of platinum has fuelled this illegal trade.

We can carry out a wide range of services around your home. • Repair work • General maintenance • Decorating • Gardening/Fencing • Hedge cutting • Light plumbing • Furniture assembly/Flatpack We can help you by putting up shelves, changing light fittings, changing locks plus so much more...

ALL ODD JOBS UNDERTAKEN

by Eileen Le Voi www.safelocaltrades.com

T: 01733 242670 M: 07867 523923

Catalytic converters reduce poisonous gases from the vehicle’s exhaust system and legislation introduced in 1993 required all cars (J reg onwards) to have one. Although it is not illegal if you don’t have one, be aware that you would fail your MOT without. Further legislation that came into force on 1 October 2013 banned cash payments for scrap metal with the aim of making it easier to trace people selling stolen metal, but one of the emerging problems identified is the direct export whereby they are being exported in containers to emerging economies where they are either reused or broken down there.

How can you prevent theft?

•

Catalytic converters can be uniquely marked in acid with a serial number

•

Motorists are advised to keep their cars in garages or park in well-lit areas

•

Most converters are bolted on - but they can be welded, which makes them harder to remove

•

Fleet owners are advised to obstruct access to high vehicles by parking cars with lower ground clearance round them

•

CCTV cameras should also be installed and warning notices posted up nearby

AT THE SAMMIES!

SUB XPRESS STARS

Sub Xpress in Serpentine Green may be a small family run business, however, at the moment, they are on top of the world! The popular toasted sandwich store with a 5 star Food Hygiene rating was invited to the exciting Sammies Awards, the Oscars of the sandwich world, and managed to bring home the Gold Award at the 2014 event.

Therefore, this award is very important for owner Peter, as well as being an accolade from which to proudly share with the local community.

The exciting evening was hosted by acclaimed chef Aldo Zilli, a Michelin starred restaurant owner from the capital. The 15 year old family business offering gluten free and unprocessed food received the award from the British Sandwich Association, meaning the award is fully recognised within the sandwich world.

SUN CREAM available here! 12

Ha mpton Gazette | August 2014 | E: info@hamptongazette.co.uk | www.hamptongazette.co.uk

The Child Support Agency was in fact re-named as the Child Maintenance Service some time ago, but from 30th June major changes to the applications for child maintenance from the absent parent, were introduced.

Hampton News

CSA out, CMA in!

From the end of last month, all new applicants to the CMS will be charged a one-off application fee of £20 whether you are in receipt of benefits or not, the only exclusion is for reported victims of domestic violence, if you live in Northern Ireland or are under 19 years. From 11th August this year both parents will bear the charges of collecting maintenance in relation to all cases in the CMS Collect and Pay system, as they call it. The charges will be 4% of the total payment, to be deducted at source before you receive it. For the paying parent there will be 20% added on to the child maintenance liability, to be paid as a charge to the CMS.

Toasting dampers on the fire

The calculation for child maintenance has now changed for new cases – it is now on gross income, not the net income formula we have been so familiar with. For one child it is 12%, two children 16% and three or more children 19% for those earning £800 or less gross per week.

Hampton Girl Guides This term we have been enjoying the outdoors and the beautiful weather we have been having. In June the Guides experienced all the fun of going on Guide Camp – but in one day! We set up our camp (including a magnificent entrance to the camp and a flagpole!), played games and cooked our meals on a fire. We can’t wait to go back for a real Guide Camp. We also held an orienteering night around Hampton together with photo scavenger hunt challenges, and invited friends and family along to a “tea evening” fundraiser for our local Guiding holiday home.

It is easy to see the government’s agenda here. By penalising both parents who choose to formalise child maintenance agreements and use the CMS service, the clear message is, reach an agreement between yourselves, make it work and you will save money. The DWP has launched an Online Tool Kit to help with child maintenance, but the general message is self-help, or you will be worse off. Belinda Smith and her associate Michele Fielding are trained collaborative lawyers and members of the local group based in Peterborough. Hampton Schools

Hampton Vale Primary School A summer term full of inspiring and engaging events and activities at Hampton Vale Primary School has capped a very successful year for the school. A day at Ferry Meadows for the school’s Foundation Stage children was full of exciting activities including den-building, ball and team games and watercolour painting. The children also had the opportunity to discover more about the wildlife at the park. In Year Two, the children’s learning about castles – as part of their Heroes and Villains theme – was enhanced by a visit to Mountfitchet Castle, Essex. The children also hosted Year Two visitors from their partner school in Marham, Norfolk. History has been a key theme for Year Four and Five children, who joined pupils from other schools at a singing event at Kingsgate, Parnwell, to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One. The children joined members of Peterborough Youth Choir and a visiting Hungarian choir for the event. Year Four children have also taken part in a striking and fielding festival at Hampton College. Meanwhile, Year Five children joined children from other schools to participate in the Festival of Learning at Ferry Meadows; there, they enjoyed activities as diverse as kayaking, raft-building, science experiments, street dance and football hosted by coaches from Peterborough United.

Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School Our preschool children had a trip to the zoo to look and learn about all the different animals. This month the children have been really busy. Our preschool children had a trip to the zoo to look and learn about all the different animals. The children meet a very happy and smiley camel!! The trip was a treat for our preschool leavers who are getting ready to go to “Big schools” We are very sad to say goodbye to the children but we wish them good luck!! Our baby room and toddler room had a visit of 2 day old chicks that they were able to hold. The children were very careful with them and held them very gently so not to hurt them. The children also been taking part in our international month, where parents have been coming in and teaching the children about their home countries. The children have been able to try foods from all around the world such as Italy, Lithuania and India. If you would like to enquire about our Nursery please contact us 01733 244000 or visit www.littleacorns-daynursery.co.uk

In Year Three, children who produced their own short films using stop-go animation were presented with a runners-up prize at the Peterborough Children’s Film Awards. Cheerleaders from Years Three, Four and Five took part in a city-wide dance festival at The Cresset, at which they performed their Magical Musical Mash-Up; they performed the same routine at the school fete, sports day and summer concert. The year ended with the now traditional celebration evening, which saw hundreds of children, parents and carers join the school’s adults to look back at the school’s and pupils’ achievements over the year. See next month’s Schools Page for more information about the celebration evening and the Foundation Stage visit to Ferry Meadows.

Vale Community Pre-school

EXCITING NEWS ALERT! Vale Community Pre-school will be opening a sister school within CSK church in Hampton centre this Autumn. Silverhill Community Pre-school will provide pre-school provisions for children age 2-3 years old. This month we have been enjoying the beautiful weather. The children have been getting creative and enjoying lots of water/ messy play. The children have also enjoyed learning all about Beatrix Potter and with the help of one of our lovely Mums (Anna Price) have been able to enjoy some of these magical stories. The children have enjoyed experimenting with different building material to create unique pieces of art.The children have also enjoyed working on their hand eye coordination by making their own fruit loop liquorice lace necklaces. As the end of the summer term draws ever closer we are getting ready to say goodbye to our 36 children and their families who leave us at the end of July after our pre-school graduation ceremony and farewell party, to embark on their reception year in September 2014. We have children going to all three Hampton schools as well as Orton and Werrington Schools. We wish them all lots of fun in their new schools and look forward to meeting our 32 new children and families when pre-school re-opens in September. We must also saying a sad goodbye to a couple of our staff members, Jaimie who is leaving us to have a baby, due in September and Hannah who is also leaving to continue her teaching studies further, we will miss them greatly, however we would like to wish a very warm welcome to Leah Christie, Alwiya Hassam and Ann-Marie Turner who will be joining our existing teaching team of Nicole Coulbeck, Cheryl Curtis and Sam Clarke for the next academic year.

Devastating Divorce Debilitates Dreadfully Saturday, 7th November 2009. I am awake and I am alone. He moved out yesterday. It was amicable, agreed, comfortable even, but yesterday I lost my best friend, my confidant, my supporter and my biggest fan. I want to scream out: “I am on my own! My best friend has gone! I don’t care about your problems!”

At first things are normal. We haven’t slept together for years so it’s normal to wake up alone but it’s not normal to be alone on a Saturday. Evenings are when I see my clients, I don’t tell them, I put on my sunny smile, my professional hat and listen to all their problems. I want to scream out ‘I am on my own!! My best friend has gone! I don’t care about your problems!’ Instead I am professional, helpful and friendly. It’s not their fault.

He was my best friend from the moment we met. It was instant attraction, ‘love at first sight’. I remember the ‘pill-burning ceremony’ when we decided to start a family after five wonderful years. We danced around the lounge in excitement and, less than a year later, we welcomed our daughter into the world. Fourteen months later our son arrived and our lives were as perfect as they could be.

It is devastatingly sad to realise that, after twenty - eight years, it’s time to say ‘Goodbye’. It’s time to let go of the hopes and dreams you had together and realise that you need to release each other into new lives, new hopes and new dreams. There is life after divorce, there are hopes and dreams and happiness to come if you learn to position yourself to receive them.

Let me help you to rediscover yourself as a single person and learn to make your life whole again.

Groundwork & News UK make a difference at the

Hampton Community Sports Association On 19 June 2014 a team of volunteers from News UK carried out work to maintain and improve the Hampton Community Sports Association (HCSA) facilities for its 40 teams and many hundreds of community users. Lead by Geoff Bunce, Community Project Officer for Groundwork Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, and working with Chas Ryan, Chair of the HCSA, 10 volunteers dug in to a range of tasks. They did some much-needed weeding and painted parts of the facility, including the Astroturf pitch areas and railings. Others tasks included painting internal and external doors and clearing rubbish and litter. All work was completed with enthusiasm and to a high standard across all areas. The HCSA provided tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits throughout the day. Geoff Bunce said “It’s a pleasure to work with News UK – this volunteer day is the fourth that we’ve done together and the improvements look great, as always. It’s a brilliant opportunity for News UK staff to give something back to their local community.” Chas Ryan said “This has been a terrific day; the HCSA greatly appreciates the work completed by News UK and Groundwork. The facility looks as good as new!” As a token of appreciation HCSA has offered News UK free sessions on the Astroturf pitch to play a sport of their choice. The HCSA thanks Groundwork for organising the Activity Day and supporting this important community facility.

Your guide to

Each month we’ll be partnering with O&H Hampton to focus on one or two aspects of Hampton life.

Living in Hampton

What is happening in Hampton? It’s 20 years since work began on the Hamptons and the next few months will see the end of O&H Hampton’s operations west of the A15 Hampton as the focus moves across the road. O&H Hampton General Manager Roger Tallowin reports on putting in place the final pieces of the jigsaw, and looks forward to the next chapter.

The next few months are something of a landmark in the life of Hampton. As far as building a community goes, we have finished work on the allotments in Hampton Vale and are completing the transfer of the land over to the Parish Council. The Church, for which we’d reserved land, is being fitted out thanks to the support of many in the community including O&H. And a new care home is being built on Clayburn Rd and will be complete this year. In Cygnet Park we have Bella Italia soon to open in the restaurant quarter, the Hampton Premier Inn adding a further 30 bedrooms to cater for growing demand, Aldi’s current planning application for a supermarket next to Haddon House, and Mastercard relocating its offices and 570 staff by the end of the year. The last parcel of land on Hampton Vale has been sold and Morris Homes has started work there. We are continuing to work with Peterborough City Council to archive technical approval for the Nature’s Way extensions, and the creation of new roads from the Church and to a third junction from Hampton – Hampton Avenue - onto the A15 beside the Gym (which will hopefully improve pedestrian access) All of this means that apart from the muchloved public open space – which we will continue to manage – O&H’s involvement as master planners and developers in Hampton

Hargate and Vale is coming to an end and Hampton Parish Council will assume a bigger role in residents’ lives as these areas continue to mature.

Looking forward I know there is a lot of interest in our plans for the rest of The Hamptons – the land east of the A15 - especially now Peterborough City Council is consulting on the 8-entry-form secondary school that will be built in what we’re calling Hampton Gardens. Our overview plan is with the Council for consultation and will be followed by a new landscape and biodiversity plan and, later this year, a new area development plan that will give much greater detail. What I can say at this stage is that our vision for the second half of The Hamptons is to create choice for people to buy into a different lifestyle as their needs and circumstances change.

New wildflower area in Hampton Nature Reserve beside the new ditch constructed for water voles and newts. Last year O&H Hampton planted 33,350 bulbs and 9000sq m wildflowers. Association as an exemplar of how to integrate green space into new communities and we are proud of that and aim to maintain those standards. Those who cycle the green wheel may have already spotted that we’ve started work on improving woodland, meadow areas and ponds alongside the Stanground Lode in preparation.

All change Elsewhere, the new centre featuring Tesco Express and other small shops, is being built at Hempsted; Barretts are building more housing adjacent to Stillwells Nature Reserve; and we are at the pre-application discussion phase on 350-450 new homes on the site of the old Orton brickworks – what used to be known as Haddon Heights and will become Hampton Heights.

We will be creating four villages, distinct from each other in their design and what they offer, but – as we’ve done on the west side – wrapped around within a country park and a great deal of green space to create connections. Each of these villages will feature the word ‘Hampton’ in its name.

So as some chapters end, others are beginning, and it’s a good opportunity for everyone who’s made their future in The Hamptons, who has been part of turning houses into homes, and homes into a community, to be recognised. The success of the interactive map on our website – with so many pins – proves just how active the community is. And later this year we’re planning a way of highlighting the people who have quietly been making that happen – so watch the Gazette for details in the autumn.

The Hamptons have been cited by both Natural England and the Town and Country Planning

Kids' Only! Riddles

(Answers

So, what is there to do in Hampton for kids? Probably more than you think... Jump, dive, and soar. No we’re not jumping out a helicopter but instead looking forward to perhaps Hampton’s most exciting development yet, the skate park. The idea was started through a realisation that there was not much to do in Hampton for teenagers. The initial headway for the park took place soon after where a petition in school managed to generate 1000 people interested in the project. The building works are due to start this month and with a completion date of October, this is definitely time to dust down that old skateboard in the garage or invest in a new one. The boys managed to raise a staggering £250,000 for the park, £100,000 of which was put towards an outdoor gym which now finds itself on Eagle Way right next door to Hampton College. The new skate park will be built on the field opposite Beaumont Way and will provide a safe environment for children away from areas of concern such as roads or shopping centres, meaning parents can sit back and relax knowing their child is not roaming the streets or in serious danger. The new park designed for skateboards may even prevent Antisocial Behaviour in Hampton. The new wow factor for Hampton arrives this October, be sure you don’t miss out.

Three unique body treatments... to help reduce and change your shape Shrinking Violet Body Wrap Have you a special dress that you want to fit into or jump start to a new and slimmer you could try a Shrinking Violet inch loss body wrap. Shrinking Violet works by lipolysis, a revolutionary method to remove unwanted fat from difficult areas such as thighs, buttocks, abdomen and upper arms. The amount of fat

Lipofirm Plus Lipofirm Plus works with Ultrasound fat reduction and Radio Frequency skin tightening. The machine works with ultrasounds that form bubbles in the tissues where the fat cells are located that cause the fat cells to reduce. It uses the adaptive method that adjusts the frequency emission relative to the tissue characteristics. Radio-frequency stimulates the collagen production and helps reduce sagging skin on the neck, face, décolleté and is used for body tightening and skin improvement. A course of eight sessions is recommended.

Endermologie® reduction depends on your build, but a minimum of 4-6 inches may be lost in just one body wrap and there is no need to shower as the wrap continues to work for 72 hours.

Endermologie® is great for when diet and exercise alone are not achieving the results and a more toned figure and smooth skin are required.

The procedure is effortless and painless. After taking measurements and preparing the skin, you are then wrapped up with a heat inducing wrapture and then relax for an hour in a heated blanket. The wrap is then removed and measurements are taken again.

Endermologie® works by massaging under the skin by guiding a hand held roller with a strong suction pad with two motorised rollers over the parts of the body needing attention. This breaks down the fat cells and disperses them into the lymphatic system and it is recommended that the client drinks plenty of water to flush the broken down fat cells out of their systems.

Shrinking Violet is great as a one off treatment or a course of treatments is advisable for longer lasting results.

A course of a minimum of 12 sessions are recommended and each session lasts 35 minutes.

6

(Non-invasive, non-surgical treatments) Our new cryotherapy treatment can reduce the fat in the area being treated by up to 24%, which means it’s eliminated forever. We can quite literally freeze your butt off as well as sort out that muffin top, love handles, back fat and man boobs! During the weeks following treatment, the destroyed cells are processed through your lymphatic system. Results can start to be seen in as little as 2 weeks, although it may take up to 4 months for you to see the full effects of Ultra Ice Fat Freezing.

Colonic Hydrotherapy Colonic hydrotherapy is a gentle internal bath, using warm purified water, introduced gently into the colon. The rest, as we say, is history.

Your treatment includes: • Consultation • Colonic hydrotherapy • Abdominal massage • Nutritional and lifestyle aftercare • Supplement advice

Our equipment

We use the latest CE approved, class 1 medical equipment, which produces a gentle treatment, whilst providing maximum hydration value. Peterborough is on an exciting challenge to create the UK’s Environment Capital delivering truly sustainable growth and as part of this challenge recognises the need to promote effective travel and to reduce the need to travel by car and promote a cleaner, greener and healthier city. also using cars in greener ways whether it be through car sharing or by using an electric car.

If everyone on Earth lived as the average Peterborian, British or European citizen does, we would need three planets’ worth of resource to sustain us. This mean, on average, each of us is using too much of the world’s resource to produce what we need to live.

As part of this, Travelchoice are hosting a number of events throughout the month of August which promote sustainable travel and the benefits it can have on us both as individuals and as a community.

The Environmental Capital Action Plan was adopted in 2014, it provides a vision and aims for how the Environment Capital will be delivered. The plan is broken down into 10 areas, each containing a vision to 2050 and interim targets to 2016 of which sustainable travel is one of these. Peterborough has the potential to be a truly sustainable city which has a thriving local economy, strong communities and a sustainable way of life where the residents are healthy, happy and prosperous and where the environment is clean, enjoyable and safe for all use. Travelchoice recognises the importance of sustainable development maximising the environmental, social and economic benefits of different transport modes. It’s not just a case of going from one place to another, it’s about discovering that Peterborough has more to offer than what you can see from the road and ultimately creating a sustainable city which visitors and residents of Peterborough can continue to enjoy for years to come.

Environment

Travelchoice Environment Update

The weeks then become divided into specific transportation weeks to highlight the benefits of each method.

Party in the Park 2nd August Travelchoice aims are simple and are to encourage sustainable travel wherever possible and to reduce the need to travel by car by achieving the following: • Improve the quality of life and transport opportunities in the City • Reduce the cities’ impact on climate change • Enhance safety and security for all the citizens of Peterborough • Support the economic growth within the city Travelchoice is by no means ‘anti-car’, we just want to let people know there is an alternative to the car which can be cheaper, quicker and healthier for all involved. We advocate people walking, cycling and using transport but

This year it will be bigger and better than last year’s event, including:

• Family fun fair • Hover Cars • Pedal powered music stage with live music acts all day • Inflatable Maze • PlayBus • Rollapaluza • Test track for assorted bikes • BBQ • Smoothie Bike

Travelchoice Launch Day Saturday 1 August Car Share and Green Vehicle Week Monday 4 August to Sunday 10 August Walking Week Monday 11 August to Sunday 17 August Public Transport Week Monday 18 August to Sunday 24 August Cycling Week Monday 25 August to Saturday 30 August Party in the Park Saturday 30 August 11am to 7pm Ferry Meadows
