Hey! I’m Jess and at the end of this month it will be a year since we moved to the Hamptons. How time flies!

Aspire Fitness Fridays 9.30 - 10.30 am: Ladies’ Fitness Session (children welcome)

We moved here before I gave birth as we thought it would be the perfect place to raise our son and for him to call it home. I love the play areas, the schools and I have to confess, I can’t wait for the day the Tump gets covered in snow! There are many things I love about the Hamptons, one of them is how you love to be on the go!

10.45 - 11.15 am: Preschool Fun & Fit Alternate Saturdays 9.30 - 10.15 am: Junior Aerobics 10.30 - 11.00 am: Preschool Fun & Fit

Doesn’t matter what day, there’s always someone out and about from joggers to children on their scooters and bikes. I admire everyone that works hard to keep a healthy lifestyle. I know the sun is shining and we are having some lovely “spring like” weather but what’s happening with the shorts? I’m toddling along in what can only be described as a snowsuit and you brave people run past me in half the amount of clothes I have on! Unfortunately on our walks be them somewhat chilly, we are seeing more and more glass being smashed around the area.

We have a lot of wildlife and we have to remember Hampton is very family orientated, many adults, children and even dogs enjoy long walks here, so this can be dangerous. Let’s keep Hampton safe and clean guys! On a more colourful and brighter note, has anyone seen the blue bell shoots and snowdrops yet? Or maybe the rabbits hopping in and out of the woods? Keep an eye out as we’ll soon be seeing the colours of Hampton change.

COMMUNITY NEWS The red kite is afforded the highest degree of legal protection under the Schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. It is an offence to take, injure or kill a red kite or to take, damage or destroy its nest, eggs or young. It is also an offence to intentionally or recklessly disturb the birds close to their nest during the breeding season. Violation of the law can attract fines up to £5,000 per offence and/or a prison sentence of up to six months.

The Wildlife of Hampton

My son is particularly adept at spotting Red Kites on car journeys. They certainly appear to be more abundant than in the past and can be seen quite frequently around this area. By Lakota (Lover of Nature) In fact we spotted two recently around Hampton. One was observed chasing a pigeon around the Vale Drive area in Hampton Vale, and another was spotted hovering around the side of Serpentine Lake. These kites are most likely part of the group that was established in Rockingham Forest (Northamptonshire) around the year 2000. Thirty kites were released at this time, which have now grown to around 500 birds. It seems that the Red Kite has taken very well to the countryside of Northamptonshire and has now spread its wings further east to our area of Hampton. Red kites were often killed because they were seen as hunters of game and domestic animals, but they are in fact mostly scavengers, eating sheep carcasses and dead game birds, and killing only small prey themselves such as rabbits, mice, voles, shrews and young hares. Live birds are also taken and occasionally reptiles and amphibians. Earthworms form an important part of the diet, especially in spring. By the end of the nineteenth century, due to this

8 Hampton Gazette April 15.indd 8

persecution, Red Kites had become virtually extinct in Britain. However, the reintroduction programme has been a great success story, as can be seen in Northamptonshire to the west of us. Red Kites are distinctive because of their forked tail and striking colour - predominantly chestnut red with white patches under the wings and a pale grey head. They have a wingspan of nearly two metres but a relatively small body weight of 1 to 1.25kg. This means the bird is incredibly agile, and can stay in the air for many hours with hardly a beat of its wings. Red Kites usually breed for the first time at two or three years old and usually pair for life. Both male and female birds build the nest on a main fork or a limb high in a tree between twelve and twenty metres above the ground. Between one and four eggs are usually laid. Watch the Hampton skies, and the surrounding area, and you should have a good chance of seeing one of these beautiful birds.

Hampton WI

Christ the Servant King

The Parish Church of Hampton Spring is a season of new beginnings. March the 21st, the first day of Spring, saw a new beginning for Hampton resident and member of CSK Church family Emma Garrod, as she was the first person to be married in CSK Church to husband Duncan Garfield. It was a truly joyous occasion as they committed themselves to each other in the presence of God and their family and friends. It says in the Bible: “A cord of three strands is not quickly broken, ” and, “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” Christian marriages include God, the third strand, strengthening and uniting a couple together. If you’d like more information about getting married in church here in Hampton, please let us know. It’s no coincidence that Easter takes place during Spring. Good Friday means a death: Easter a resurrection.

The death and resurrection, coming back to life, of Jesus, is at the very heart of Christianity, where new life and hope are born. Christians rejoice in the new beginning that Jesus offers to us all, rebirth, the promise of new life and eternal life. If you’d like to find out more about the amazing love of God that took Jesus to the cross, and gives the opportunity for a new beginning, come and join us any Sunday morning at 10am at CSK. We’d love to welcome you – and there’s chocolate to enjoy on Easter Sunday too! A very happy Easter to you all. Sylvia.

Hampton WI are moving! Due to the fact that we are expanding (no not because of all the puddings but because our membership has grown) we are moving venue. We are very excited to announce that with effect from Thursday 16th April 2015 our meetings will be held in the large Hall at the new CSK Church. It is a wonderfully light, bright room with lots of space and I am really looking forward to being able to welcome more guests and new members in the future. Another small change is that our meetings will be starting slightly later from 7:30pm, but we have arranged that we can still gather from 7pm in the lovely foyer area to enjoy a cuppa and chat before the meeting starts. Our first meeting at the church is going to be a fantastic one where we will be discovering the history and beauty of the art of calligraphy. We will possibly be having a go at trying some beginners calligraphy for ourselves. Next month, we hope to have some great pictures of our March meeting where we had an absolutely brilliant time giving ourselves vintage make overs. It was so much fun and who knew just how glamorous we could be? So ladies, please come see us. We would love to see you.

BUSINESS FOCUS

Turn your property into someone’s home Whether you’re a landlord already, or thinking about buy-to-let this year, there are plenty of do’s-and-don’ts to deal with in the letting industry: regulations, legal requirements, paperwork and day-to-day management... when all you really want is regular rental income, with minimum fuss. At Peterborough-based Letters Home Rentals, this is part of their daily routine. They take care of the details on your behalf, and if you’re on the lookout for a property that’s ideal for tenants – or you have one to market – their sales company, Martins Residential, offers a fully integrated service from the same office. No doubt you’ll weigh up the often considerable time commitment if you self- manage, against the value for money from a dependable, professional service. The Residential Landlords Association has said that most complaints about letting agents concern ‘poor administration’. They advise landlords never to choose on price alone and when they find a good agent, to hang on to them. Letters is a local, family-run business that’s now in its twenty-fourth year. Highly experienced, they know this area intimately, and are voluntary members of industry regulators ARLA, the Association of Residential Letting Agents.

for lawns

This month sisters Sarah and Jo, who run GreenThumb Peterborough & Oundle give their top tips on greening up lawns and getting rid of those unwanted weeds. 1. 1 Apply a spring fertiliser

1. 2 Spread fertiliser correctly

1. 3 Control weeds

Winter takes its toll on lawns so apply a balanced fertiliser of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium (N,P,K). At GreenThumb our customised spring fertiliser includes exactly the right mix of all these nutrients for strong grass with a vibrant colour.

It’s true to say that the more nitrogen you put on a lawn, the more it grows and the greener it gets but beware! Too much nitrogen scorches the grass; it can make it grow too quickly and weaken it. Always apply at the recommended rate. At GreenThumb we apply fertiliser using a calibrated spreader taking into account our individual walking speed.

Spring weather encourages weed seeds to germinate; these can be hard to see in the grass while they are tiny. Applying a herbicide at this early leaf stage will control the presence of weeds within the lawn. If your lawn has a weed problem, don’t worry, give us a call and we’ll be happy to sort them out for you. Our trained lawn care technicians are qualified to apply herbicides

safely and correctly. If you do treat your lawn yourself, always read and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and guidelines. 1. 4 Visit our NEW website www.greenthumb.co.uk This will give you lots more information, hints and tips on how to have a beautiful lawn.

For help with your lawn or for a FREE lawn analysis, call Sarah / Jo on 01733 755028. E: peterborough@greenthumb.co.uk www.greenthumb.co.uk

It’s never too late! The Cautionary tale of Mr and Mrs Wyatt

This is either good news or bad news, depending on whether you are a wife or husband (and in most cases it would be bad news for the husband). There has just been what could potentially be a landmark decision, by the Supreme Court this week (the new House of Lords) giving leave to a wife 18 years after divorce from her husband, to make a claim against him for a financial settlement. Mrs Wyatt is claiming £1.9 million which the Judges have inferred could be pushing it a bit, but nonetheless have indicated that she might receive a modest award, (modest, in Supreme Court terms, is likely to be fairly hefty). The Wyatt case is another salutary lesson for making sure all the loose ends are tied up properly at the time couples separate and divorce, rather than trying to save money by taking a short cut. As this case demonstrates, it can all come back to bite you many years after you thought it was a closed book. Instruct a family law specialist who knows how to bring closure, right from the outset.

COMMUNITY NEWS

New nursery for Hampton Seedlings Nursery is Hampton Vale Primary School’s newest addition to it’s ever-developing education offer for families. This exciting Early Years setting opened it’s doors in January and has been growing in success ever since. It is now open for full days offering excellent Early Years provision and care for children aged 2 to 4 years. Unique to any other setting in the local area, Seedlings is based in the contemporary building of Hampton Vale Primary School and has been created by it’s dedicated Early Years team. Being part of the school means that parents have ease of access to the wider services on offer, including the award-winning Family Support team. Seedlings Nursery is a purpose-built space that has been designed with

early childhood development in mind. Last year 175,000 people complained to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) about nuisance calls.

Until now firms have been able to evade prosecution because victims had to prove ‘substantial harm or distress’. The law changed on the 25th February 2015 to allow the ICO to prosecute nuisance callers more easily and help protect the millions that suffer from these calls. This means that regulators will be able to impose fines of up to £500,000 on firms which make repeated, unwanted nuisance calls. The new rules will come into force on 6th April 2015. Changes to the law were spearheaded by Which?, the Consumer Champion. Executive Director, Richard Lloyd said, ‘We welcome the Government making good on its promise to change the law so it’s easier to prosecute nuisance callers. These calls are an everyday menace blighting the lives of millions so we want the regulator to send a clear message by using their new powers to full effect without delay. It’s also good news that the Government has listened to our call and is looking into how senior executives can be held to account if their company makes nuisance calls.”

What next?

In order to keep the pressure up, it is important that you report any companies who cold call or send nuisance texts. If you take a call, the first question you should ask is ‘what is your company name and address’? Also it is important to make a note of the date and time. To report online, go to www.which.co.uk/campaigns/nuisance-calls-and-texts or call the TPS (Telephone Preference Service) on 0845 070 0707. To find vetted and approved local traders, go to www.safelocaltrades.com or call 01733 530019

PET CARE

Pet Vaccinations: Why, What & How Often...

ur pet is the Vaccinating yo tect them best way to pro diseases. from horrible Why vaccinate? Whilst an unvaccinated animal can spread infection directly to another it is unlikely that as an owner you would allow your healthy pet to have contact with such an infected animal. It is therefore far more likely for pets to contact these diseases indirectly from the environments they frequent or carrier species. For example: Leptospirosis (Weil’s disease) and Distemper have large environmental reservoirs of infection - contact with standing water contaminated with rat urine can be enough to transmit them. Parvovirus can remain on pavements for as long as two years come rain, shine or snow. Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD) can be transmitted to rabbits from contaminated bedding or food, and Myxomatosis via biting insects.

24 Hampton Gazette April 15.indd 24

The diseases Vets vaccinate our pets against are generally very difficult, if not impossible, to treat successfully if contracted, which is why we feel so strongly about vaccinating pets. But how easy is it for our furry family members to contract one of these diseases? You might think they’d have to come into contact with an already sick animal, and like me, you’d be wrong. What vaccinations should be given and how often: Diseases that vets currently routinely vaccinate dogs against are:

And rabbits? • Myxomatosis • Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD)

• Adenovirus • Distemper • Infectious Canine Hepatitis • Parvovirus • Parainfluenza • Leptospirosis

Nowadays these are administered together in one injection and which needs to be repeated annually.

The above can all be vaccinated against in one go, after an initial two injection course this vaccination must then be topped up by a booster injection every year to provide adequate levels of the vaccine to fight against infection.

Non routine vaccinations for other diseases

• Cat Flu * Feline Panleukopaenia (Feline Enteritis) * Feline Leukaemia Virus

Kennel Cough is usually only vaccinated against if dogs are being kennelled or deemed at a high risk from mixing with other dogs regularly at dog shows, training classes etc…

Cat Flu and Enteritis can be vaccinated against in one injection, whist Leukaemia vaccinations are done in addition to this but can be done at the same time. After an initial two-injection course both vaccinations require booster injections every year just like vaccinated dogs do.

Both cats and dogs are required to be vaccinated against Rabies if going abroad under DEFRA’s Pet Travel Scheme. Beware, animals without all the right paperwork won’t be allowed back into the UK without six months quarantine!

What about cats?

The planet may have had a World Book Da y but here in Hampton, we we nt one better - as a day became a book-filled week at Hampton Vale Prima ry School. Children right across the school became immerse d in all things books to encourage the m to develop even fur ther their love of reading. The week began with a visit by children’s autho r Lou Kuenzler, who inspired the child ren in their writing by describing how she wrote some of her mo st famous titles, includ ing the Princess Disgrace series and the Shrinking Violet set of books. All of the children in the school had the chance to hear her tales about story-writing and they were then invited to wr ite their own stories at home in a wh ole-school competition , the winners of which will be chose n by Lou herself. Her vis it also coincided with a dress-up day, wh en adults and children alike dressed as their favourite book ch aracters. There was more inspir ation later in the week when book designer Nikki Kenwoo d, who is also one of the school’s Reading Champions (th eir job is to encourage and inspire readers across school), spoke to children abou t her design work. Meanwhile, children in the reception classes wa lked to Hampton Library to fin d out more about its wo rk before drawing inspiration fro m one of their favourite stories - Jack and the Beanstalk - in their learning; they use d “magic beans” to make purchases, measu red the giant’s footprint s and designed “bean art” pictures. The week ended when the telling of bedtime stories was celebrated as children came to school in their pyjamas or onesies, with teddy be ars and bedtime cuddli es in their hands.

Spring is in the air and the children and staff at Hamp ton Hargate have been busy little bees! Following last year’s success we decided to tak e part in the Big Pedal aga in in the first two weeks of March . The children and staff were encouraged to cycle or sco ot their usual journey to and from school as part of the interschool com petition and we are eagerly awaiting the results to see if we bea t our score from last year! Hampton Hargate hosted our annual Sports Week at the beginning of March. The week was jam packed with sporting related activities which ranged from traditio nal sporting fixtures such as Archery and Cross County to the more unusual activities including Fencing and Crazy Golf. The noise was dea fening from our small hall when the Circus Workshop was in full flow with feather balancing and unicycle antics! The children also enj oyed scaling the dizzy height s of the climbing wall in the spring sunshine! Well done to Mr Godfrey for arranging a super fun filled week! World Book Day took place on Friday 6th March. The chi ldren were invited to come in dressed as their favourite book cha racter and we were treated to an arra y of wonderful costumes from both the staff and the children. The re was a Gangster Granny, several Where’s Wallys, lots of “Frozen” prin cesses and a super Willy Wo nka! On the Wednesday before, the chi ldren were invited to a bed time stories evening where they enjoye d cookies and milk whilst liste ning to a bedtime story. We ended the term with our Year 4 residential trip to Stib bington and a fantastic performance of ‘Alice the musical’ from our talented Year 5 children – look out for mo re information on these in the next edition!
