When the news is doom and gloom, which it often has been since the outbreak of the coronavirus, it can be hard for even the most optimistic among us to stay positive. And, without doubt, every measure possible must be taken to protect everyone from this formidable pandemic. The Hampton Gazette returns to you, not entirely in its old familiar way, because we are aware that this is a very different world to the one we left behind and that life will never be the same again. Yet, as we adjust to a 'new normal' it is important that we also strive to balance those necessary tenacious actions with some preservation of our old normal. It is perhaps even more imperative now than ever, that we can, as a community, and individually, retain the energy and resolve to focus on the positive, and appreciate both past and present ports of sanctuary, spirit, courage and kindness as we weather this storm together.

Sadly O&H Land, in consultation with Persimmon Homes, the Fire Service, the Police Service and Peterborough City Council has taken the decision to cordon off an area of Hampton Beach over serious health and safety concerns.

Hello Hampton! It’s good to be able to connect with you again through the pages of the Gazette. Although we had to close the doors of the church building back in March, CSK church still continues: the church is the people not the building. We’ve been recording and uploading messages of encouragement, children’s activities and services online and they can all be found by doing a search on YouTube for CSK Hampton Church. A new Sunday Morning Short service is available each week at 10am: just over 30 minutes in length. If you’ve never attended a church service, or not for a long time, why not tune in, the service is available any time or day of the week? We would love you to join us. Now we are allowed back in the building, our wonderful space is open for personal prayer: check out our Facebook page or the door of the church for the opening times. There’s a story in the Bible in Matthew chapter 7 about two men: one who built his house on sand, and one who built his house on rock. When the storms came, the house on

the sand collapsed, and the house on the rock stood strong. It’s an analogy about life. The unsettled times we have gone through and continue to go through have shown us that many of the things we may have built our lives on, placed our hope and security in, have let us down. Jesus promises those who make the decision to follow Him that He will always be with them, through both the joys and through the storms of life, indeed to the end of life and eternity. He offers both hope and security. If you want to know more about the Christian faith, or you just need a listening ear or support at this time, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. All our contact details can be found on our website: https:// cskhampton.church With our love and prayers Sylvia and the CSK Church Family

Meet the New Curate My name is Joel Wicks and I’m excited to be the latest member of the staff team at CSK Hampton as the new Pioneer Curate

If you see us around please feel free to say ‘hi’ and I’ll be happy to chat with you. We moved to the area in mid-June and despite the challenges of moving during the COVID-19 pandemic we have been warmly welcomed by the community. I’m privileged to be able to share the ups and downs of life with the people of Hampton and to share with you the good news of Jesus. In my spare time I also love playing guitar, talking about sport and brewing craft ales. Sometimes I even get to do some of these as part of my job, although I’m yet to convince Rev. Sylvia that brewing beer is an essential part of Christian Ministry! I’m looking forward to getting to know as many people in Hampton as I can.

4

I’d also love to tell you about my family; my wife Lauryn was born in New Zealand and loves cups of coffee with friends and watching rugby. Our children are Elijah (8), Sarah (6) and Lizzie (3). They love making new friends, creating things with lego/ duplo and spending quality time as a family. As a family we’ve lived in several different places, first of all in Wellington, New Zealand since Lauryn and I married in 2008, then returned to the UK in 2015 when I was appointed as Children and Families worker at St Michael’s Church in Braintree. We moved to Southgate in North London when I began training for Ordination in 2017 at Oak HillCollege.

Lake area in Hampton Beach cordoned off due to health and safety concerns This decision was made following a number of incidents of anti-social behaviour, littering, and a number of people entering the water despite the signage around the lake telling them not to do so due to the danger that this presents Lee Collins, Development Manager at O&H Land, commented: “Following a Dispersal Order issued by the Police we have decided to temporarily close Hampton Beach. The health and safety of everyone on our land be it the residents of Hampton, the general public or our contractors working for us, is our top priority. It was therefore agreed, in consultation with all the relevant local authorities, that a temporary closure of this area was the safest way forward. The lakes are very deep and cold, and the signage prohibiting entering the water is not being adhered to. This coupled with the actions of a few have given me serious concern that an accident could occur. The closure of Hampton Beach today will give us time to reassess the area and decide on a new strategy which enables people to enjoy the lakeside setting in the safest way possible. For more information relating to the developments at Hampton Beach please follow @OHHampton on Twitter and Instagram.

Update Councillor Mohammed Farooq Sadly, there were many victims affected by Covid 19, Vivacity being one of them. Due to lack of government support, social distancing measures and reduction in members, Vivacity cannot continue and has handed back the contracts to the Peterborough city council. The council has formed a task force and are looking at each service and are hoping to open all services to residents as quickly as possible. Vivacity's chair of trustees Stewart Francis said the decision to hand back services to the council was "extremely difficult and painful" and "a direct result of the financial impact of Covid-19" Please check the Hampton Gazette Facebook group for regular updates.

hamptonhub Peterborough’s

digital transformation gathers momentum

The rollout of gigabit-capable full fibre infrastructure to nearly every home and business in Peterborough is picking up pace with CityFibre on track to complete work in half of the city by the autumn CityFibre, the UK’s third national digital infrastructure platform, is now installing full fibre in Woodston, Eastgate, Werrington and Hampton, with Fletton, Orton Northgate and Orton Wistow due to start later this month, adding to its growing presence across Peterborough. Peterborough was among the first locations in the UK to begin benefitting from CityFibre’s Gigabit City investment programme, which is set to invest up to £4bn nationally, and £30m in Peterborough, to bring futureproof, gigabit speed digital infrastructure to up to eight million homes across the UK. Launch Internet Service Provider (ISP) partner, Vodafone is using CityFibre’s network to bring Vodafone Gigafast Broadband to the city, with services now live for residents across Garton End, New England, Walton, Paston, Dogsthorpe, Newark, Eastfield, Parnwell and parts of Werrington and the Ortons. Granemore is delivering the construction programme on CityFibre’s behalf. As key workers, CityFibre has been asked by the UK Government to continue to expand the nation’s digital capacity during these challenging times. All contractors are being urged to follow the social distancing protocols as outlined by Public Health England to ensure the build partners’ and the public’s safety. Rebecca Stephens, CityFibre’s City Manager for Peterborough, said: “Since work began in July 2018, we have seen great progress in our mission to bring reliable, high capacity, full fibre infrastructure within reach of nearly every home and business in Peterborough. “At CityFibre, we aim to support the communities within which we operate, and over the last two years we have been involved in a number of community engagement initiatives that address the need for digital inclusivity. This includes the likes of the STEM Festival and the city’s first TEDx event - an independent offshoot of the world-renowned TED talks – which aimed to spark ideas around improving the local community. “In addition, we sponsored the opening of Connect Park, a fantastic new green space in the Millfield area. And of

course, we launched the Inspire Your City programme which challenges young people and households across Peterborough to come up with new ways in which residents and businesses could make the most of our full fibre network and the increased connectivity that it brings. “While the current crisis is not without its challenges, we are motivated to maintain progress. The safety and health of our employees and partners remains paramount and we are proud to play a part in providing the digital infrastructure that will not only support home-workers in their day-to-day lives beyond the current situation, but also economic recovery.” The rollout will enhance Peterborough’s growing reputation as a digital hub in the UK, with research from economic consultancy Regeneris predicting that full fibre connectivity will have a major impact over the next 15 years. It shows that up to £45m could be added to the value of local homes, while Smart City initiatives could add as much as £54m locally. Access to full fibre could also unlock £28m in business productivity and innovation, while a further £25m in growth could be driven from new business start-ups, with enhanced connectivity making it easier and less expensive to set up base and run efficiently. John Holdich, the Leader of Peterborough City Council, added: “Access to full fibre already plays an important role in Peterborough’s economic and civic life, and this will continue as the rollout reaches new areas and we unlock new digital capabilities as a smart city. “By providing access to futureproof full fibre infrastructure to businesses and residents across the city Peterborough is set to become one of the best digitally connected cities in the UK, and indeed the world. This will bring a number of positive benefits such as helping to attract and retain businesses, encouraging new investment, boosting innovation, and enhancing educational opportunities.”

Working from home? With full fibre we could all enjoy a more flexible future… Over these past weeks, many of us will have adopted entirely new ways of doing everyday activities, such as attending meetings, completing coursework, joining exercise classes and catching up with friends and family. Likewise, many of us will have realised that all these activities now have one thing in common: a digital screen. This ‘new normal’ demonstrates exactly what we already suspected – digital technology has transformed our lives. And now, in these unprecedented times, we are utterly dependent on its ability to provide us with a socially-isolated gateway to normal life – work, the high street and entertainment, as well as the comforts of friendship and family we all need at times like these. But, in reality, the way we work in particular has been changing for a while now. Analysis from Aviva estimates that more than four million UK employees already work from home on a regular basis. That's a staggering one in seven people who have decided to ditch the daily commute to tackle their to-do list from the kitchen table or home study. Those who have just joined the homeworking community will now be realising a host of benefits, from spending less time and money on travel, to enjoying a better work-life balance. According to the TUC, the average commuter spends 58 minutes a day getting to and from work. Think of what you could do

with that time - take the kids to school, go to the gym, take up a hobby, or even just spend more time relaxing with your loved ones.

economy, with a report from economic consultancy, Regeneris stating it could add a huge £30m in value over a 15-year period.

There are, of course, environmental benefits too. if more people worked from home then fewer car journeys would be made on a daily basis, reducing fossil fuel consumption daily.

What’s holding us back?

For businesses, it can also drive higher staff retention rates, encouraging loyalty from those seeking a better balance or increased flexibility. With increased homeworking, businesses could also consider moving to smaller, more flexible premises, reducing their carbon footprint further. They might also even have access to an increased talent pool, with homeworking making it possible for people who

The benefits are clear. But our technology isn’t there yet. A good internet connection is not just a nice to have for homeworkers – it’s a necessity. Unfortunately, home broadband often isn’t fast or reliable enough to make permanent working from home anything more than a pipe dream for parts of the country.

may not be able to travel for all sorts of reasons, including disability or caring responsibilities, to enter the workforce.

CityFibre-backed research shows that 78 per cent of UK consumers felt slowed down and frustrated by their internet connection. But for homeworkers, that figure increased to 82 per cent. Indeed, almost all homeworkers (99%) agreed that a better connection would enable them to work from home more often, with a third saying that doing so would improve their work-life balance and improve stress.

At a local level, research has shown that worker flexibility will undoubtedly benefit Peterborough’s

The solution has to be full fibre digital connectivity. Unlike the legacy

Change is coming

copper networks used by most of the country, full fibre is the fastest – and most reliable – option there is. And with the availability of these services constantly increasing, it’s something consumers should look out for when considering their next broadband package. As key workers, and the nation’s third national infrastructure provider, CityFibre has been asked by the UK Government to continue to expand the nation’s digital capacity. It is investing up to £4bn in bringing full fibre within reach of up to 8 million homes by 2025. In Peterborough, this represents a £30m investment in a new future proof digital infrastructure that will serve the needs of homes and businesses for decades to come. This investment will help to unlock the workplace – and workforce of the future. Soon, working from home won’t just be something that only a select few can make the most of. Instead, it will be the reality for millions more employees up and down the country.

Hampton Parish Council Zooming in on local issues The Parish Councillors have been holding meetings via Zoom and were one of the first Councils’ in the County to hold online meetings at the start of the Covid-19 restrictions. These meeting have been beneficial as the Councillors discuss planning applications, grant giving and many more important matters that help to keep Hampton a happy and safe community. Minutes from these meetings are also available on the website. All members of the public are encouraged to participate in these meetings, with the agendas and links available on the Parish website www.Hamptonpc.org.uk

Bulky waste collection A bulky waste collection has been booked for 29 August; this is pending any additional restrictions which may cause the service to be suspended. The Councillors are currently discussing adding additional collection points to enable more people to use this service. A full schedule of times and locations will be on the Parish Website as soon as these are confirmed, and a printed list will also be available on the Parish notice board in Serpentine Green.

Socially Distanced Angling As many of you are aware, as of 13 May it was agreed by HM Government that Angling could resume nationwide. Nathan Minter (HAA Chair) has taken all possible measures to ensure that Anglers and residents walking around the lakes are always at least 2 metres apart. Therefore, a decision was made to close Sunset Lakes to anglers, as due to the

proximity of the paths to the waters edge social distancing could not be guaranteed. All the other lakes have reduced pegs and Anglers must book one of these pegs 24 hours in advance.

Hampton Allotments Both allotment sites in Hampton, like many other allotments across the country, have seen an increase in requests for an allotment plot. Hampton Hargate is currently at full vacancy and Hampton vale has a few vacancies that are curtly being allocated. homecomforts Bee Lettings Buying a property? The last few months have seen a major disruption to our lives and whilst there have been some signs of recovery we will be living with the impact of COVID 19 for many months to come. As a business we have had to adapt the way we do things and many of those changes will probably become the norm.

At Taylor Rose TTKW, we know that buying a house is one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make. We understand things can be complicated and stressful, especially if not handled correctly, which is why you need trusted, knowledgeable advisors to guide you through the legal process.

The announcement of a stamp duty holiday until March 2021 will help the sales side. To be fair we saw only limited disruption to transactions in hand with many buyers continuing with their plans. Solicitors working from home helped those who needed to move. With the resumption of viewings we have seen plenty of activity and accurately priced properties attracting buyers often within 7 days.

We’re an independent firm of Solicitors specialising in conveyancing. We take a fresh, client-centred approach and we’ll make sure your transaction goes smoothly with no surprises or hassle. We always put your best interests first, making sure that you know about all known costs from the outset.

On the lettings side things have been affected more severely and this may be the case for some while yet. The impact of furlough and possible future redundancies will have a lasting impact. Tenants’ ability to pay

their rent could become increasing problematic and agents’ acceptance of tenants with an element of LHA will be vital to support tenants through this difficult time. Overall the number of viewings is down on previous years particularly on rooms in shared houses and recovery will be a slow process. However, estate agents will have to adapt to changing market conditions and ways of doing business. At Bee Residential we are well placed to handle this changing market with our experienced teams on both sales and lettings. We have rebranded to reflect a new decade and the move last year to new premises in Hempsted.

We’ll be there every step of the way to support you. We’ll assist in asking all of the right questions so that you’re fully informed and confident about the property and the deal before you commit. We’ll make sure relevant searches are carried out. If you’re getting a mortgage, we’ll work with your agent, mortgage broker and surveyor to get your purchase completed. discoveringart DISCOVERING

I have been given this opportunity to take over a page of you local Gazette to keep you up to date on what our wealth of local artists and makers are up to in and around Peterborough. I’ll introduce you to two artists in each issue, let you know if there are any exhibitions or fairs on and suggest a project to do at home.

Firstly, I’ll introduce myself, Louise Denney of DenneyDesign. I’m a stained glass and jewellery designer with a BA(Hons) in Design Crafts, I make leaded stained glass windows on commission, lamps, sculptures, gifts and jewellery, all from my garden workshop. I hold workshops in stained glass at the Museum once or twice a year. My jewellery is hand made, enamelled silver, which can incorporate photographs fired on, found objects such as shells and driftwood and gemstones. I love using wood as a frame for stained glass and recently made a 5’ high lamp out of an aged oak beam with stained glass for the

restaurant at the Woolpack in Stanground, along with 4 fan lamps. I have an Etsy shop, Facebook page and Instagram feed as DenneyDesign, and a Facebook page as DenneyDesignStainedGlass. Due to lockdown, our local galleries, open studios and fairs are still on hold, but all the national art galleries have online interactive exhibitions on, try the Tate and the National Gallery I’d now like to introduce you to Tony Nero, a hugely talented, respected and passionate artist, who, along with making his own art, teaches it to others and tirelessly promotes the arts in Peterborough.

Originally trained as a graphic designer, Tony worked in the music industry producing record sleeves, posters and magazines for the early part of his career. His work is very diverse and he works in various different mediums such as pencil, charcoal, pastels, oils, watercolour and stipple-dot drawings. He’s partly self-taught but also had formal fine arts training at the London Guildhall University. Tony had his first solo exhibition in Peterborough in 2008 and has been showing his work regularly ever since. Tony is passionate about promoting local art in Peterborough. As well as teaching and running workshops, He’s also an active committee member of Peterborough Artists Open Studios and Creative Peterborough. His work is now in homes and private collections across the world. One of Tony’s proudest achievements to date was showing his Black Heroes collection of portraits in an exhibition at Wembley Stadium.

One of his most recent pieces of work and largest to date is a 12ft mural he painted at the Taveners Road Underpass in the City. You can find out more about Tony and his work by visiting his website: www.tonynerobrushworks.com or follow 'The Art of Tony Nero' on Twitter Instagram or Facebook. He also has an Etsy shop: ArtofTonyNero

Here’s a project for you to try at home, it’s simple and incredibly effective. The beauty of it is, you don’t have to be neat, in fact, the splashier, the better. You will need: Watercolour paper, either watercolours or inks, a plant spray bottle with water in, brushes and a white fine liner or paint pen. Do a rough sketch of your sea creature, then spray the paper with the water to dampen it. Start with your paints or inks, the damp paper will allow them to run and blend into one another, crating light and dark, mixing and blending the colours. It doesn’t matter if you go over the lines, you can even add some splashes for effect. Allow to dry, thoroughly, then using your white pen, add detail, outlines, scales, fins, eyes, etc.

Lakota (Lover of Nature) in many Although we have all been affected to ways by Corona19 wildlife continues has flourish despite it. The natural world y spring carried on as normal during the bus n. In and summer activity of reproductio visitors Lockdown our garden with its wild proved alive and active.

Our daily allowed exercise walks also provided interest, observing emerging spring life. It is always a joy to see the swan cygnets swimming on the lakes. I was fascinated by the swan who made her nest by the side of the Charlton Crescent: a brave soul. Fortunately all was well and her young hatched out and left the nest safe and sound. The other week the canada geese were out on the grass by James’s Lake accompanied by their delightfully fluffy goslings. Both the daisies and buttercups have been

out in abundance carefully left to flourish by Hampton’s caring lawn mowing team, and bluebells have grown in the woodlands around Hampton. In early spring a great many cowslips could be seen growing along side the grassed area in Buckthorn Road. I noticed that around the edges of Teardrop Lake beautiful red poppies and brilliant blue cornflowers have been sown. The white flowers of the blackthorn gave way to the equally abundant blossom of the hawthorn in May.

Previously bare winter trees and bushes have acquired a rich coat of green since we have all been locked away. Red kites have been soaring overhead and house martins nesting under eaves across Hampton. Terns and blackheaded gulls swoop and dive over Serpentine Lake. In our garden we have a special visitor who we hope is preparing to give birth. Named Mrs Tiggiewinkle (a hedgehog) I spotted her the other day venturing forth around every part of the garden gathering leaves in her mouth and bringing them

home to her nest, under a raised slab step outside our conservatory. The blue tits have raised a family in our garden nesting box and in our high eucalyptus tree a pair of crows has built a nest and raised a family. During those strong spring winds recently those poor chicks were visibly flung about quite violently and I was concerned they might be tossed from the nest. Fortunately all was well and they have now all flown.

Although locked in there has been much to enjoy in Hampton.

As humans finally begin to emerge from lockdown, battered and in some case mourning losses from Covid-19, how has this period impacted upon bugs?

Bugs AFTER LOCKDOWN

Initial impacts for bugs are mostly positive, with less pollution making it easier for them to detect food such as pollen and nectar. There is also less light pollution, as many large complexes and stadia have turned off the lights, less traffic reducing the risk of road kill, and more habitat as large areas of public and private land have been left unmown.

now fully cultivated as there has been a rush to grow your own. In addition, there has been a spate of paving and decking going on to create outdoor rooms to enjoy the lockdown sunshine. Fly-tipping has increased due to closure of disposal facilities and charity shops, creating more litter and hazards in the natural world.

The counterbalance has been habitat disruption in gardens and allotments as home dwellers have spent more time in their gardens clearing ‘weeds’, pruning and tidying whilst many fallow allotments are

The big risk now, as we emerge, is over zealous mowing of parks and similar spaces that may well undo the habitat gains of lockdown. Proposed new planning rules to kick start the economy may have

14

dangerous consequences for important wildlife refuges. Pollution levels are at risk of rising as public transport is shunned in favour of cars. How we choose to emerge from lockdown will have a major bearing on which way the scales for nature tip. Just remember that during lockdown how much joy was found from nature in our gardens and how many rare sightings were recorded – we can and must emerge with nature in mind and make sure the balance is tipped firmly towards a green recovery and nature for all.

younggazette Hundreds of girls, young women and leaders from across Girlguiding Cambs West, enjoyed the excitement over the recent midsummer weekend as they took part in a special virtual sleepover challenge. They joined the thousands of members from across Girlguiding Anglia all connecting by completing the same activities and sharing their experiences online

VIRTUAL GUIDING for MIDSUMMER SLEEPOVER Girls from all sections of Girlguiding, Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers, Leaders and even Trfoil Guild members, slept somewhere other than their own bed and took part in a series of online Midsummer and camping activities. These included finding out about midsummer celebrations from other countries, designing a flower crown, and using recycled materials to create a sun medallion treasure hunt. Not forgetting the more traditional camp activities, including campfire songs, making s’mores and a sleeping bag stuff competition. Many joined other members from their units virtually through video calls, allowing them to connect with their friends and complete activities together. Girlguiding Anglia, who have around 70,000 members, wanted to launch the challenge to support their leaders and girls during the current

lock down situation. The aim was simply to provide fun and adventure through guiding activities at home and to enable members to feel part of the wider Girlguiding community. It also gave Girlguiding Anglia the opportunity to welcome and encourage parents, siblings and non guiding families to get involved and join in the experience. Girlguiding Anglia’s Chief Commissioner, Tracy Foster, said ‘I’m so proud of our amazing volunteers who have challenged themselves during lock down to take meetings online, send newsletters or activities to their members, all to ensure they can continue to offer amazing experiences to our girls and young women. To celebrate all the achievements we’ve seen across our region we wanted to create an interactive challenge that was flexible for leaders and parents to deliver at

home. The challenge also supports Girlguiding’s Adventures at Home initiative. Our Midsummer Sleepover Challenge has been a great success.’ Millie, a Guide in Somersham said: “Midsummer camp out! Exploring Stonehenge, making a sundial, s’mores, movie marathon and waking up for sunrise = best ever night of lockdown!!" Abigail, a Rainbow in Hampton said: “My favourite was going camping in the tent because I was comfy and I was excited!” Daisy, a Brownie in Sawtry said: “ It was a fun and different activity for lockdown, I enjoyed learning about Summer Solstice and Stonehenge” Jan, a Trefoil Guild member in St.Neots (photographed above, top left) said: “I enjoyed the overnight tent experience again but I am now too old and stiff and unable to get up off the ground to make it a regular occurrence!”

There is, of course, also a badge for the challenge which is now available for pre-order on the website, The Midsummer Sleepover Challenge is not limited to just the one weekend and the pack will be available on the Girlguiding Anglia website www.girlguiding-anglia.org.uk throughout the summer to allow members and non-members to take part at any time.

younggazette Supporting children's learning through the virus impact

Book a free assessment at kipmcgrath.co.uk/book-assessment. Take care and stay safe. Becky (Centre Manager)

One of the most talked about subjects in the world at the moment, is of course, the coronavirus. The virus has impacted each and every single person in some way, from being confined to your own house for weeks on end, to losing loved ones. Our children have all missed out on important schooling and social interactions, not to mention exams that were cancelled after so much hard work and preparation. Many parents will be feeling the burden and pressure of home educating, only made harder by teaching techniques that have changed over the years. My mum (Gill Terry - Centre Director) and I love working together. We share a passion for helping and supporting children and that is why we put our hearts and souls into running two local tuition centres - Kip McGrath Education Centre Peterborough North and Peterborough South. We understand that all children learn differently, at different paces and this is reflected in our approach to tuition. Our fantastic team consists of 10 qualified teachers who share our vision and ethos. During this terrible pandemic we have been able to continue supporting our students with online lessons on our bespoke and secure website. We are pleased to announce that we are now reopening our centres for face to face tuition throughout August. We will be following Government guidelines on social distancing and hygiene. Online lessons will continue for those who would prefer for their children to work from home.

Mosaic of magical moments The photos idea developed from hats to outfits and the audience grew from three friends to many households and Whatsapp groups. People suggested that I should raise money for my efforts. One particular group of friends I have made are through attending the Cancer Wellbeing Service at Peterborough City Hospital, having been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. The Cancer Wellbeing Service offers tremendous support for those diagnosed with cancer and offers therapies, counselling, exercise classes and art therapy, to name just a few - and most importantly a cup of tea. As a group, we met at a Mosaic Class. This is where the magic began. Hooked on mosaics and led by Mary Green, a professional mosaic artist, we set about creating art work for the Centre’s garden. The garden was in need of restoration and with the help of donated plants and the work of a volunteer gardener, Jenny Grainger, the garden is becoming a beautiful, restful place. Although the art work has stopped at present it is a good opportunity to raise money towards art materials and a fence to protect the hours of therapeutic art work that has been invested for the future enjoyment of clients who attend the Cancer Wellbeing Service.

lockdownstories Hampton resident and Hampton College Music Teacher, Gizz, shares his lockdown story with us ...

guitar TEACHING

Photography by Daniel Ackerley

DURING LOCKDOWN

Hampton resident and music teacher at Hampton College, Gizz Butt is known to many as the live guitar player of The Prodigy during their glorious Firestarter and Fat of The Land period, but residents may not be aware that Gizz also enjoyed international success with his own band Janus Stark during the same timescale with a USA top 40 hit single Every Little Thing Counts In 2001, he set up his own Rock Academy in Peterborough and in 2006 started teaching guitar at Hampton College in it’s first year of opening. In 2017, he began teaching at Hampton Gardens as the in-house guitar teacher.

The lockdown did open up other possibilities. Gizz moved his studio to his home and kept recording there, managing to record an entire album, several new songs a number of lockdown videos.

“Hampton has beautiful walks in and around it. We’re very lucky to have seen deer many times on our walks along with many species of butterflies, dragonflies, frogs, birds, there is so much nature to see on our doorstep.

As a performing, writing and recording artist, Gizz has never stopped and has 50 releases to his name.

Being allowed to exercise and going for walks around the Hampton area led to discoveries of secret beauty spots and unique sites. On one of those walks he stumbled across a patch of land that looked like nothing ever seen. Like something from a desert scene. The next day he returned with a guitar, a microphone, two microphone stands and a clamp and made his own selfie promo video for a song Father Time www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rAW7eOF654

If you look for them, there are trails, walkways and old bridleways with all the flora and fauna, and some man-made curiosities along the way. If you expand your walks to Homewood nature reserve, crown lakes and the nearby villages, you’ll have plenty to see. I hope you enjoy it as much as what I have.”

After a gap of 20 years during which he played for many celebrated artists such as Steve Ignorant (Crass) and Fields of The Nephilim, Gizz decided to bring Janus Stark back with a brand new full-length album and the band found a home with Time and Matter records. With a portfolio of high praising reviews and a 70 date UK and European tour the future looked set until Covid19 hit. When the lockdown was announced and Hampton College and Gardens were closed, music teacher Gizz contacted the parents of the pupils and kept up the lessons online. He’s still teaching them now. Although the tentative plan is to restart at the schools in September, teaching on line has really been working out and the students have stuck to their practice schedule without interruption and really upped their game.

Although the brakes are still on regarding live performance, Gizz continues to perform live sets on line via streaming performances at the band page www.facebook.com/JanusStarkBand Janus Stark have an impressive archive of demo material, so to keep everyone happy, Time And Matter records have planned with Gizz to release a series of these with the first two all ready for release. Keep up to date on the band’s website http://janusstark.co.uk/ Gizz continues to live and work in Hampton and has this to say about the area:

My patreon page www.patreon.com/GizzButt “ My Patreon page was born to share my 'jewels', all the records I have made, released or unreleased, The Prodigy, Steve Ignorant (Crass), UK Subs, The English Dogs, The Destructors, Sabbat, Fields Of The Nephilim, The Stupids, Pyogenesis, The More I See and JANUS STARK. Recordings, videos, photos, writings, everything is going up here. Take a look”.

The end of the blame game

Money Matters

You may have heard the news that, at very long last after many years of campaigning by family lawyers, the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation bill has received royal assent. It will not however be in force until 2021, hopefully earlier rather than later next year. The reform means that divorcing couples will no longer have to make a choice about who should be the one raising unreasonable behaviour allegations against the other, or accusing the other of adultery. At the moment, the only way you can avoid blaming the other spouse if you want to start divorce proceedings, is to wait for two years and then obtain the other party’s consent. The details have not yet been confirmed, but there will still be a waiting period from when the couple first indicate their intention to divorce, but a matter of months, not years. You will then simply need to pronounce the fact that you consider the marriage has irretrievably broken down and no further explanation necessary. Family law professionals are optimistic that this neutral start to the end of a marriage will pave the way to much less antagonistic and stressful proceedings, through to a consent finance order and agreeing arrangements for the children. Although it will not be a universal panacea for sweetness and light throughout the case, it will be very helpful to avoid starting off on the wrong foot. Your family law specialist will keep you informed about the progress of the legislative changes and of the earliest opportunity when you can file for a divorce under the new procedure if you have sadly decided that this is unavoidable.

The Chancellor announced the introduction of the Job Retention Bonus on 8 July 2020 This is a one-off payment of £1,000 to employers that have used the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) for each furloughed employee who remains continuously employed until 31 January 2021. The bonus will provide additional support to retain employees. To be eligible, employees will need to: • earn at least £520 per month (above the Lower Earnings Limit) on average for November, December and January • have been furloughed at any point and legitimately claimed for under the CJRS •

have been continuously employed up until at least 31 January 2021.

Employers will be able to claim the bonus from February 2021 once accurate RTI data to 31 January has been submitted. More information about this scheme will be available by 31 July and full guidance will be published in the Autumn. The Chancellor also announced other measures, including: • the Eat Out to Help Out Scheme – during August, diners can get 50% off Monday to Wednesday on meals and non-alcoholic drinks, up to £10 per person, when eating at participating restaurants, bars, cafes and other establishments that have registered • VAT reduction – from 15 July until 12 January 2021, the UK government will cut VAT from 20% to 5% on any eat-in or hot takeaway food and drinks from restaurants, cafes and pubs, excluding alcohol. This VAT reduction also applies to all holiday accommodation in hotels, B & B’s, campsites and caravan sites, as well as attractions like cinemas, theme parks and zoos • an increase in the Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) threshold in England and Northern Ireland – increasing the threshold under which no SDLT is paid on the purchase of a main home from £125,000 to £500,000, with immediate effect until 31 March 2021. Updates on CJRS scheme Claiming for employees furloughed on or before 30 June You need to claim by 31 July for employees furloughed through the CJRS for periods ending on or before 30 June. Get ready for changes from 1 August Employers will no longer be able to use a CJRS grant to cover National Insurance (NI) and pension contributions for furloughed employees from 1 August. You can submit August claims in advance, from 20 July. Made a mistake on your claim? You can now delete a claim online within 72 hours of submitting it. Search 'claim for wages through Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme' on GOV.UK.

staysafe Ensure post lockdown doorstep scammers don’t give you the summertime blues Overthe past few months, the COVID-19 lock down has halted life for so many people – not least the doorstep rogue traders. However, as the restrictions continue to be eased, the fraudsters have once again begun to make life a misery for the elderly and the vulnerable, who are being caught off guard by Coronavirus scammers. Many people have been waiting weeks and weeks to have their windows cleaned, garden spruced up, property exterior painted or driveway re-paved. But we would warn those hasty to have the work they desire so much to be carried out to simply stop and ask the professionals – even if it means waiting just a little longer. With so many rogue traders looking to cash in on people’s new-found freedom, it can be tempting to agree to work being offered. Whatever the job – big or small – don’t be tempted to give the work to someone who cold calls you at your home, claiming to be ‘carrying out similar work in the area’. Firstly, they have caught you unawares, a time when you don’t really have time to think and make an informed decision; they can be very persuasive. Secondly, any offer which appears too good to be true often is.

Common reports include:  Taking a deposit and never returning to do the work  Quoting a price and then increasing the cost as the job progresses  No statutory cancellation notices (cooling off period - see below), guarantees or warranties provided  Produce poor quality work and refuse to sort out problems or finish the work Avoiding Rogue Traders Advice:  Be cautious; if a trader knocks at your door, do not agree to on the spot house repairs without taking advice. Say 'no thank you' and close the door.  Be wary of special offers. They will use tactics such as 'I am only in your area today and would need to do the work now'.  Do not believe when told that guttering, roofing, gardening or paving work is in need of urgent repair – this may cause you to panic and allow the work to take place.  Don't allow anyone to pressure you into agreeing to have work carried out. If you ask them to leave and they don't, they are committing a criminal offence - contact the police on 999.  Do not make snap decisions. If you feel that any work needs carrying out on your property, take time to talk to family or neighbours before you make a decision.  Don't ever go to a bank or cash point with a trader; legitimate traders would never do this! If you are in the market for a new driveway or patio or are dreaming of a new lawn or garden for the summer – then always use a reputable tradesperson, like the members of Safe Local Trades.
