TEAMAKER, DISRUPTOR, SERVANT 1930 - 2023
The young Sri Lankan who set out to make the world a better tea, became known as the world’s Teamaker for the invincible faith and relentless commitment with which he pursued his vision of quality with integrity. Merrill J. Fernando was born to a simple, rural Sri Lankan family and he overcame his modest circumstances by taking his beloved tea to the world with kindness to people and nature. He was the first tea grower to offer tea grown and ethically crafted at source, right where it is grown, to tea drinkers around the world. He named his tea after his sons and travelled the world inviting people to, “do try it!”. His success gave hope to artisans and producers around the world and as God blessed him with success, he fulfilled his promise of kindness. At the time of his passing, his Dilmah Tea had touched the lives of millions through the education, entrepreneurship development, nutrition, care for people with disability, and other projects of his MJF Foundation, and the environmental impact of Dilmah Conservation. His legacy lives on, stewarded by his generations. 5

AISLABY ESTATE, BANDARAWELA Aislaby Estate was first planted in 1920 and is among the most treasured tea gardens of the Uva Province. Its 463 hectares of tea, at elevations of 1,000 to 1,200m above sea level, are ringed by montane and cloud forest: ecosystems that hold the flora and fauna for which our island is celebrated — wild orchids and rare mosses, endemic and migratory birds, leopard, sambhur, purple-faced langur, lined with streams that sustain extraordinary endemic fish. Uva soils are mineralrich. 15

THE GARDEN OF EDEN LOOSE LEAF TEA IN TIN CADDIES Long before Sri Lanka had a name, it had a reputation that bordered on the mythological. Arab traders first navigated their dhows into our waters in 3BC, returning home with stories of an island so extraordinarily beautiful, so abundant in spice, fruit, gemstone, exotic flora and fauna, that they could only explain it one way — it was the Garden of Eden, the garden God made before all others. They were not speaking loosely. The tradition that placed the Garden of Eden in Sri Lanka was earnest, geographical, and enduring. At its heart stood Sri Pada — Adam’s Peak — the great mountain in the island’s interior whose summit bears a depression in the rock that every faith on the island claimed as sacred. For Muslims and Christians it was the footprint of Adam himself, the mark left when he was cast out of paradise and set his foot, for the first time, on the earth below. Dilmah’s Garden of Eden loose leaf collection is drawn from that inheritance. Each tea in the collection introduces a wonder of the island— the great rock fortress of Sigiriya rising from the forest like a memory of a vanished civilisation, the Galle Lighthouse standing at the edge of the island where the Indian Ocean begins, the Nine Arches bridge buried so deep in the jungle that the trees have grown around it like a living frame, the Blue Whale surfacing in the warm water just offshore. These are the features of a place that the world’s oldest travellers recognised with awe, as the garden at the beginning of everything. Our Garden of Eden Teas are grown, handpicked and carefully selected again as an experience of that garden — soil tended with respect, amidst precious biodiversity conserved and tradition treasured, on an island that has been beloved for longer than most civilisations have existed.
