01 Engagement Ring Packaging A project aiming to redesign packaging to put emphasis on sustainability. I added value through product life cycle extension.

Concepts Situation

While recycling everyday materials is an effective way to reduce our impact on the environment, reduction in the amount actually going into the cycle in the first place is the best way forward.

Concepts

Value added through longevity of packaging. Concepts focusing on ring presentation and display when not in use.

Prototyping Process

Making and Finishing Formed a mood board based on a theme then produced 6 different concepts to explore different forms and mechanical functions

Initial Ideation

Concept Development CAD Modelling

This design was then modelled using Solidworks to visualise and test mechanics. Tolerances were added based on how tight the fit was required to be

Assembly Drawing Cost Calculation Manufacture

The design with the best mechanical function was selected and then developed further to better understand the mechanics of the system

An engineering drawing was produced using Solidworks and dimensions and cross sectional analysis was added to fully understand and define the design A costing document was produced based on the volume of the design taking into account material costs

The Solidworks file was converted into an stl and sent off to be 3D printed using ABS.

Post Processing

The final product went through post process sanding and finishing using acrylic paint with a spray on primer. It was then assembled using a m3 screw and bolt to secure it.

Materials Used: - ABS - M3 screw - M3 hex nut - Acrylic paint - Spray primer - Polymer sharpener

Do you enjoy your commute?

What aspects of commuting do you enjoy the least?

How do you cope with tedious commutes?

YES NO COFFEE -Ticket collection -Time consuming / waiting -Crowdedness -Early morning tiredness

REQUIREMENTS AESTHETIC

Disposable coffee cup specific bins Designed to promote the separation of materials for recycling Ratio of space allocated for cups : lids : liquid is 4:2:1 Left has visual feedback from progress via a clear screen

Bin to promote recycling through interactive fun Bin gives a fun incentive to recycle It is a very simple and easy to use design meaning everyone can interact with it

Both bins require additional effort put in by the user to separate each component and commuters will not be willing to put in this effort

A higher effort bin to use but one that is less practical and more of a novelty structure

- Medium priority - Test method: client feedback - WBSI it appeals to potential users and encourages interaction - Source: user

Final Design Final Design

I concluded on a design which subtly promotes recycling through streamlining of the process. This recycling point allows cups to be separated into their components effectively with little user effort.

Insert lid of cup into lid remover

Let go of cup to dispose of

Lift upwards to take lid off

Cup will fall into correct area

Liquid will drain into drawer
