DESIGN STATEMENT

My passion for Landscape Architecture has immensely grown throughout my time studying the discipline. I started college studying business, as I was unsure of how to apply my passion for creativity and nature into a career. When I found out about LA, I decided to switch my major and try it out. Over the past 3 years studying the profession, my love for the career has exceeded my expectations. I am interested in urban design, specifically transportation design and parks & plazas. I am also interested in sustainable design. I want to dedicate my career in LA, improving our built environment to be more environmentally friendly. My passion for environmentalism and climate change have strongly steered my interests in the profession. In my career, I look forward to working on a wide variety of projects and continuing to expand my knowledge and refine my skills.

Tokos + Reed Residence Athens, Georgia

residential planting design

The Tokos & Reed residence is located on Milledge Avenue in Athens, Georgia. The style of the home features Tudor-Revival architecture, the American take on English style. The owners expressed interest in a formal, green and white garden with pops of color for seasonal interest. With this in mind, I designed a garden mimicking structure, following geometrical shapes, and the using symmetry to obtain the formal design aesthetic wanted.

The education building is a new addition coming to the Sandy Creek Nature Center in Athens, Georgia. Sandy Creek Nature Center features 225 acres of preserved woodlands and wetlands, over 4 miles of trails, and a visitor center with live animal & natural history exhibits. The new education building will be home to the nature centers environmental education team, with office and classroom space. The new building surrounds a courtyard, which was designed around the Ginkgo Biloba tree. In 1964, the Ginkgo was named the offical tree of Athens. The courtyard features Ginkgo and native plant gardens. A water feature and seating areas mimick the shape of ginkgo leaves. The space is designed to celebrate the ginkgo, as well as promote educational opportunites.

Jefferson Gardens Athens, Georgia

conservation subdivision

Jefferson Gardens is a conservation subdivision located in Athens, Georgia. The community is designed as the ideal home for empty nesters who want to connect with nature. 5 pocket neighborhoods make up the community, each with 10 homes. Home styles include single-family detached residences and duplexes. This development prioritizes nature by developing the maximum number of units on only half of the buildable land area, with the remaining land under a conservation easement. Each pocket neighborhood features a communal greenspace and community house. The entire subdivison has access to a large community house, and a system of trails which provide views to the lake onsite.

Healthier Together Georgia utilizes the HOP (High Obesity Prevention) grant funded by the CDC. The goal of the grant is to increase walkability and access to healthy foods. For this project, I worked with the cities of Lumpkin and Richland, Georgia. Both rural towns lack walkable infrastructure and residents have limited access to healthy foods. Meetings with the community were conducted to determine what change the residents wanted to see . A site inventory and analysis of the exisitng sidewalk infrastructure and exisiting greenspace. Recommendations were made to increase walkabilty and access. Interventions including sidewalks, shared use paths, yield roadways, bike lanes, and more were proposed along with new community parks. This project focused on how design can improve the health within the community.

Lumpkin, GA

Stewart County: Healthier Together Studying Walkability & Health. Lumpkin Composite Analysis

The site analysis consisted of documenting exisitng sidewalks and their conditions, throughout each city. Road speed limits were documented to assess if pedestrians would feel comfortable walking, and to recommend the appropriate solution. Common destinations and residential areas were documented to see where people were traveling to and from. Lastly, zoning and vacant lots were included to determine locations for community amentities such as parks. 27 | Dillon White

The design aims to improve access and walkabilty to as much of the community as possible, while taking budget concerns of each city into account.
