SUSTAINABILITY IN DESIGN STUDIO - FALL 2022

OASIS LANDING IS AN URBAN PARK LOCATED ALONG THE BUSAN SEA IN BUSAN, SOUTH KOREA. BUSAN IS SOUTH KOREA’S 2ND LARGEST CITY BEHIND SEOUL, WITH A POPULATION OF OVER 3.4 MILLION. THE DENSITY SITS AT APPROXIMATELY 12,000 PEOPLE PER SQ MILE. BUSAN HAS THE PERFECT HARMONY BETWEEN THE MOUNTAINS, RIVER, AND SEA. THE CITY SITS ALONG THE COASTLINE OF THE KOREAN STRAIT, WITH BEACHES AND A LARGE PORT. TO THE NORTH IS THE TAEBAK MOUNTAINS WHICH OFFER HIKING AND A BEAUTIFUL BACKDROP BEHIND THE CITY. OFTEN LOCALS FEEL DISCONNECTED FROM NATURE, AS THERE IS A LACK OF GREENSPACE IN THE CITY. OUR SITE IS LOCATED ALONG THE LOTUS MALL IN NAMPODONG, THE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT OF BUSAN. OASIS LANDING PROVIDES AN URBAN SANCTUARY WITH SUSTAINABLY FOCUSED DESIGN, TO OFFER A REFUGE FROM BUSY CITY LIFE TO ALL HUMAN AND NON-HUMAN USERS.

MASTERPLAN

MASTERPLAN CREATED USING AUTOCAD AND PHOTOSHOP.

OASIS LANDING PARK FEATURES A LARGE RIBBON LIKE WALKWAY WHICH FUNCTIONS AS THE MAIN PATH THROUGH THE SITE. THE NORTH SIDE OF THE PARK IS MORE GEOMETRIC AND CONTROLLED TO REPRESENT HUMAN IN THE LANDSCAPE. THIS AREA HAS VERY RIGID EDGES AND MORE FORMAL, CONTROLLED LANDSCAPING. LOCATED NEAR THE MALL CUT THROUGH IS SEATING FOR ENJOYING LUNCH OR RESTING WHILE TAKING IN VIEWS OF THE PARK. A MARKET SPACE ALLOWS POP UP VENDORS TO COME IN, EXTENDING THE NEARBY REACH OF THE FISH MARKET TO TOURISTS, MALL SHOPPERS, AND THOSE VISITING THE PARK. A PLAY SPACE IS ALSO LOCATED WITHIN THIS AREA.

ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE PARK, YOU WILL FIND A NATURALISTIC FOREST. GROUND-LEVEL TRAILS OFFER USERS URBAN HIKING, BIRD WATCHING, AND A SPACE TO INTIMATELY ENJOY NATURAL PLANTING. THE RAISED BOARDWALK GIVES USERS A BIRDS-EYE VIEW OF THE PARK, NEARBY SEA, AND A CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE THE TREE CANOPY UP CLOSE. THE URBAN FOREST WILL PROVIDE HABITAT TO WILDLIFE LIVING WITHIN THE CITY AND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES TO CREATE A SUSTAINABLE SITE.

IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SITE, THE HUMAN AND NATURAL LANDSCAPE JOIN, WITH A CLASH OF GEOMETRIES. THIS AREA HAS AN OPEN PLAZA SPACE FOR EVENTS, AN OPEN LAWN, AND A BIORETENTION GARDEN.

ACROSS THE STREET, THE NEWLY UPDATED WATERFRONT PROMENADE WILL BRING USERS TO OASIS LANDING FROM THE NEARBY MARKET DISTRICT TO THE NORTHWEST AND THE PORT AND FERRY TERMINAL TO THE EAST. THIS PROMENADE HAS A SECONDARY MARKET SPACE FOR VENDORS. TO GIVE USERS ACCESS TO THE WATER, LANDSCAPED TERRACES WITH SEATING DROP-DOWN TO THE WATER EDGE. FLOATING PLANTERS IN THE WATER PROVIDE VISUAL INTEREST, AS WELL AS HABITATS FOR MARINE LIFE, AND HELP COMBAT HYPOXIA IN THE OCEAN.

URBAN DESIGN STUDIO - SPRING 2022

COMER, GEORGIA IS LOCATED IN MADISON COUNTY, JUST OUTSIDE OF ATHENS, GEORGIA. THE TOWN HAS A POPULATION OF JUST OVER 1,500 WHICH IS ON THE RISE WITH MORE AND MORE CHOOSING TO LEAVE THE DENSER CITIES FOR A MORE RELAXED LIFE IN RURAL GEORGIA. DOWNTOWN COMER HAS GREAT POTENTIAL, WITH NUMEROUS HISTORIC STRUCTURES CURRENTLY SITTING VACANT, A DESIRABLE STREETSCAPE IN NEED OF ATTENTION, A CONVENIENT DOWNTOWN PARK, AND A FOCAL POINT OF A RAILROAD RUNNING THROUGH DOWNTOWN.

A MASTERPLAN WAS PRODUCED TO REVITALIZE DOWNTOWN COMER, GEORGIA. THE FOCUS WAS TO CREATE A MIXED-USE CENTER FOR MADISON COUNTY, WITH REHABILITATED EXISTING BUILDINGS AND A REVAMPED COMMUNITY PARK. MUCH UNUSED SPACE WAS CLAIMED IN THE FORM OF NEW PEDESTRIAN PLAZAS, EXPANDED STREETSCAPES, UPDATED PARKING, AND ADDITIONAL RETAIL AND HOUSING. THE MASTERPLAN CALLS FOR ADDING HOUSING DOWNTOWN, AS WELL AS DINING, RETAIL, AND OFFICE SPACE.

THE UPDATED STREETSCAPE INCLUDES STREET TREES TO PROVIDE SHADE AND GIVE FORM TO THE STREET. THE PLANTING PALETTE CONSISTS OF NATIVES TO NORTH GEORGIA.

THE EXISTING MAIN STREET SHOPS ARE REFINISHED TO PROVIDE A MODERN AND UPDATED LOOK WHILE STILL KEEPING WITH THE VERNACULAR OF HISTORIC COMER. THE STREETSCAPE IS UPDATED TO INCLUDE LIGHTING, SEATING, STREET TREES, NATIVE LANDSCAPING, AND WAYFINDING SIGNAGE UNIQUE TO COMER. THE STREETSCAPE LEADS USERS DOWN MAIN STREET TO SHOPS AND DINING, AND ULTIMATELY TO THE NEW DOWNTOWN PARK. CITY PARK

COMERIAN

COMER HAS EXPERIENCED AN INFLUX OF ARTISTS COMING IN TO THE ESCAPE THE RISING COSTS OF LARGER CITIES, AS WELL AS THE OPPORTUNITY TO BRING CRAFTMANSHIP TO THE CITY. WITH THIS IN MIND, COMER WILL INCLUDE A FUTURE ARTISTS MARKET, AS WELL RECEIVE PUBLIC ART IN THE FORM OF SCULPTURES, MURALS AND OTHER INSTALLATIONS. COMER’S CURRENT TOWN MOTTO IS “MAKE OUR TOWN YOUR TOWN”, PREVIOUSLY “HONEY POT”. CURRENTLY, THE TOWN IS HOME TO THE HONEY POND GARDEN CLUB AND THE HONEY POND DISTILLERY. PLAYING OFF THE HONEY MOTIFS, A DOWNTOWN WAYFINDING SIGNAGE SYSTEM WAS CREATED USING THE HONEYCOMB SHAPE AND A BRIGHT COLOR PALETTE TO WELCOME VISITORS.

ISSUE AT STAKE

THIS GRAPHIC AIMS TO HIGHLIGHT WHAT MANY METROPOLITAN CITIES EXHIBIT TODAY. THE AUTOMOBILE HAS CAUSED CITIES TO BE TORN THROUGH WITH MASSIVE HIGHWAYS, OFTEN SPANNING 16+ LANES ACROSS. THESE HIGHWAYS SEPARATE COMMUNITIES, AND OFTEN MAKE CITIES HARDER TO TRAVERSE ACROSS ON FOOT OR PUBLIC TRANSIT. HIGHWAYS ARE OFTEN CLOGGED WITH BUMPER-TO-BUMPER TRAFFIC, AND ULTIMATELY LED TO THE ENDLESS SPRAWL OF CITIES AND SURROUNDING SUBURBS. IN THE BACKGROUND YOU CAN SEE THE NATURAL LANDSCAPE SLOWLY BEING OVERTAKEN BY URBANITY: AUTOMOTIVE CENTRIC DEVELOPMENT WITHOUT ANY CONSIDERATION FOR OTHER USERS.

IN THE FUTURE, AS HIGHWAYS BECOME OBSOLETE DUE TO WALKABILITY AND ROBUST PUBLIC TRANSIT, WHAT WILL BECOME OF THE MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF SPACE AND INFRASTRUCTURE LEFT BEHIND?

THE PROPOSED SOLUTIONS INCLUDE: TRANSIT WHICH UTILIZES THE LINEAR ROADWAYS FOR RAIL LINES OR BUS LINES WITH STATIONS TO PROVIDE MORE EFFICIENT AND HIGHER-DENSITY TRANSPORTATION THROUGHOUT THE CITY. URBAN AGRICULTURE TURNS RIGHT-OF-WAY AND EXISTING ROADWAYS INTO URBAN FARMS WITH LARGE-SCALE CROP PLANTING, AS WELL AS RAISED GARDEN BEDS FOR COMMUNITY GARDENS. THE ECOLOGICAL CORRIDOR APPROACH OFFERS A WAY OF BRINGING NATURE BACK INTO THE CITY BY REFORESTING CORRIDORS AND CREATING BIODIVERSITY, INCREASING WILDLIFE, AND CREATING PLACES TO EXPERIENCE NATURE WITHIN THE CITY. AND LASTLY, THE LINEAR PARK APPROACH TURNS FORMER ROADWAYS INTO PUBLIC GREENSPACE IN THE FORM OF PARKS AND GREENWAYS.

UGA COLLEGE OF ENVIRONMENT + DESIGN ALUMNI PLAZA ATHENS, GEORGIA

IMPLEMENTATION DOCUMENTION STUDIO - FALL 2022

LOCATED DIRECTLY NORTH OF THE JACKSON STREET BUILDING ON THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA’S CAMPUS IS THE NEW ALUMNI PLAZA FOR THE COLLEGE OF ENVIRONMENT AND DESIGN. THE NEW PLAZA OFFERS A SPACE FOR THE COLLEGE TO HOLD EVENTS, AS WELL AS SPACES FOR LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS TO STUDY, HOLD CLASS, AND STRENGTHEN KNOWLEDGE IN PLANTING AND CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND PROCESSES.

THE PLAZA CONSISTS OF A TREE BOSQUE WITH SEATING, WALLS FOR DEDICATION TO ALUMNI, A LARGE OPEN PLAZA FOR EVENTS, PLANTED TERRACES, AND AN OUTDOOR AMPITHEATER. THE PLAZA TURNS THE SITE FROM UNUSABLE SPACE TO A SPACE THAT ALLOWS FOR A MULTITUDE OF ACTIVITIES, AND INCREASES PLANTING AND PLAZA SPACE ON UGA’S HISTORIC NORTH CAMPUS.

THE PLAZA ALSO CREATES TWO NEW ACCESSIBLE ENTRANCES TO THE JACKSON STREET BUILDING PROVIDING AT STREET LEVEL ACCESS TO THE NORTH SIDE OF THE BUILDING. BOTH OF THESE ENTRANCES ARE PREVIOUSLY SERVED WITH STAIRS.
