INTRODUCTION TO SIMPLE DESIGN PROCESS

It's a process through which a step by step system is derived in order to fulfil a design process's initial brief. The project includes understanding a user’s attributes and generating a product using them as your base, of initial ideas . Simple design process is a procedure through which a customer’s identity is portrayed as a whole with respect to a large group in which he identifies himself. This process provides the user a direction and guideline in which he can move in order to reach to a desired goal. The subject opens up creative minds by indulging in various activities which allows the designer to explore. The basic understanding and application of design methodology in terms of designing a product is based on 'the end user'.

PERSONA MAPPING

Persona is the basic understanding of the user in order to get a insight about the attributes that link to him/her. They become the foundation of the whole project by providing guidelines , a proper direction and theme to move further ahead with. Persona mapping adds “sense of belonging to a product by justifying the proper attributes that link the user with his product. Whereas the persona of the product speaks about how it has been developed and how is it different from various other products in the same category. The individuality and originality that a product has is only because of the different origin that it can be traced back to which provided the product the unique elements within itself.

Several visits were made to users place in order to understand his environment completely which in turn provides the insight into users life. After studying users demographics and psychographics a list of attributes had to be derived which would help in the further processes of product development. A user’s High involvement area had to be taken into consideration so that the product generated can be useful to him in every aspect possible.

The above mentioned attributes were finalised and will now be taken as the main keywords to move ahead in the process. Based on these attributes an inspiration had to be decided which justifies the attributes of the user. These attributes would be the main aspect of the product generated and should be completely visible in the end result in order to provide a strong link between the user and the product.

INSPIRATION

Inspiration

Why Inspiration? Every form that exists , every product that is manufactured can be traced back to its inspiration. Taking an inspiration allows you to move your research and work in a desired direction and reach to a form which reflects the attributes of your user. Inspiration , helps to generate forms which are meaningful and caters to a group of people with similar characteristics and sharing the same area of interest.

The Focused Owl

Diksha pilania - AD(IV)

Description

The owl is the tranquil face of the bird personalities. A creature of great integrity, its quiet demeanour accords it an air of mystery and diffidence. It is known as the serene, wise observer of human society. Owls have developed quite a reputation for intelligence, but it's really their calm and insightful nature that gives this impression. Instead of an intellectual approach to life they use their deeper spiritual senses to guide them. Spending much of their time in solitary pursuits, owls like to hole up in a quiet working environment and venture out only when necessary. They are not a playful creature. Only engaging in exercise and sport in order to keep physically fit. Owls espouse nonviolence, think logically, and argue persuasively. A conscientious worker, an owl takes responsibilities seriously, and when it accepts the burden of public office it does so with the grace and skill typical of the species.

Comparative Study During the procedure of selection of inspiration , a comparative study was done between the inspiration and the user in order to finalise an inspiration which reflects the attributes of the user. After repeated research, Owl was finalised as the main attributes of the user i.e “focused” and “determined” was completely visible through this inspiration. Through the above mentioned description it clearly states the visibility of the user’s attributes in the inspiration at a very vast level.

FORM GENERATION

Diksha pilania - AD(IV)

Form generation Why Form Generation? Form generation is necessary in order to refrain from using the exact replica of the inspiration as the product but justifies the inspiration’s attributes in as minimal lines as possible thus giving the essence of it. A step by step procedure of form generation helps one to understand their form completely in terms of the flow of lines and silhouette of the same . After repeated sketches, a stage is reached where the form is completely visible even in its minimal and abstract version. This is where we can finally move on and move towards developing our product.

Form Sketches

3 selected Forms

Diksha pilania - AD(IV)

Final Form After coming down to 3 selected forms , a single form had to be decided which would be the reference for the product generation. A form which on one hand equates the attributes of both the user and the inspiration and on the other hand is suitable to be converted into a product that will be further designed. This final form will be the basic silhouette of the product and should not lose its identity throughout the course of product generation . It will act as your unique selling point and provide the product its individuality and originality aspect.

Forecast Study Once the form has been finalised , it is very necessary to research about the forecast and upcoming trends . After all you don’t want to be the one coming up with something which is no more in demand. A complete forecast study was done in order to understand the forms , colour , material and texture that would flourish the market . At the same time , it should be kept in mind that nowhere in the whole process you should forget about the user . Even when you are looking at the forecast keep in mind the user’s attributes and refine your research accordingly.
