EMERALD MOUNTAIN RESIDENCE

Project type:Residental buildings

Project year: 2022

Location: Žabljak

Area: 5320. 30m2

Sometimes a single word, thought or photo is enough to trigger ideas. In creating new experiences, we rely on personal searches, life stories that shape us through philosophical, spiritual themes that we explore and translate into works.

The shape and position of the object enables the experience of space in all directions. The advantage of the concept is both short distances and the possibility of assigning each tract separate terraces on the ground floor. All green areas can also be seen as a common yard. The feeling of belonging to nature and openness when entering the facility creates a lasting experience.

The building's design draws inspiration from the abstract symbol of the trinity serving as a framework for establishing distinct zones that fulfill the outlined program objectives.

volume aligned with urban planning parameters

dividing the monolithic volume into diverse functional spaces

orienting new structures towards the mountains and creating atriums between them

The concept is envisioned as a structure that accentuates the landscape through its positioning, with apartments thoughtfully designed to craft a new visual experience. Each unit features unobstructed views, establishing a continuous connection with the mountains.

The space is divided into public and private areas through an introverted approach, expanding boundaries and incorporating unique design elements that foster interactive communication zones both inside and outside the structure, enhancing its connection with nature.

The thoughtful arrangement of openings and secluded terraces, along with the building's orientation towards the primary view of Medjed Mountain, influences the interior ambiance and enhances spatial quality, ultimately enriching user satisfaction.

Green oases are integrated between the volumes, invigorating the space and fostering a positive atmosphere.

VILA Z 03

Project type: Residental buildings

Project year: 2022

Location: Nikšić

Area: 248.64 m2

The narrow plot presented a challenge that inspired us to develop a linear, modern design. Despite Villa Z's width of only 10 meters, the interior feels more expansive thanks to the thoughtful arrangement of openings and a micro atrium, which enhance natural light throughout the home, resulting in a dynamic living environment.

The ground floor features cubic spaces divided by stairs, an atrium, and a terrace. Upon entering the house, one is naturally drawn to the kitchen area, which extends linearly into the dining room and seamlessly flows into the living room.

The living room is spacious, with a high ceiling and large windows. The space is organized around the fireplace, which serves as a symbolic focal point for family gatherings.

The dining room serves as a gathering space for family events, with a large classic table that can accommodate up to eight people. The design is enriched by a chandelier and a mirror placed behind the table.

The living room is not just a room; it’s a space where stories are shared, memories are created, and relationships are nurtured. It serves as the heart of the home, where people gather to celebrate life’s moments.

The interior is thoughtfully designed to evoke a sense of warmth and welcome. The walls are painted white and adorned with decorative elements in a classic style. The furniture features an earthy color palette, which, combined with the overall design, creates an atmosphere of liveliness and a sense of openness.

Ist FLOOR PLAN

Small areas are accentuated with vanity tables or writing desks, framed by artwork or mirrors. This design approach ensures that even the most subtle elements of the interior are thoughtfully considered.

Choosing natural wood for furniture creates a rich experience for the user, evoking comfort and authenticity. It blends seamlessly with minimalist elements, resulting in a space that embodies both versatility and elegance.

SOUTHWEST FACADE

NORTHEAST FACADE

The cubic spaces of the interior are reflected in the façade, where the building's volumes are clad in various materials. Wood panels predominantly adorn the ground floor, complemented by gray accents, while the first floor features a white finish, giving the upper volumes a light, floating appearance above the ground-level structure.

Within the residential complex, two distinct building types were defined to create diversity. Type 1 is designed as a two-story house featuring a stone façade. A glass cube serves as the staircase, breaking up the monolithic structure and allowing natural light to permeate the interior.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN

1ST FLOOR PLAN

The apartments are situated on both floors of the building, each featuring a separate entrance. The layout is minimalist, with the living room oriented towards a corner adorned with glass windows, which, when opened, extend into a summer terrace.

A different approach was taken in designing Type 2 houses. This structure is situated on the ground floor and consists of two interconnected modules, linked by the entrance and sanitary areas. By rotating the modules, each house achieves a unique appearance. This modular design also accommodates potential variations in the use of the home.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN

The volume of this house is divided into two smaller modules, yet together they occupy the same footprint on the ground as Type 1. The façade is designed in a simple white color to complement the stone of Type 1. Additionally, the roof is left green to blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape.

KLEKA URBAN ANALYSIS

Project type: Urban analysis Publication

Project year: 2023

Location: Jankovića Krš

Area: 20 ha

If you were offered the choice to set aside a piece of water, land and sky only for yourself, to create your own unique and self-tailored spectrum of possibilities for a perfect existence in time and space, would you dare to imagine something like this?

What would these fantasies look like, packed into a perfect subset of the timeless, making your senses live unrepeatable experiences that bring nothing but peace to you - the only real source of renewable energy accessible to the human species? Peace, as the only resource that is worth searching for, following the beauty of existence on this side of heaven.

KLEKA - JUNIPER

The project that seeks to tie together the history of this area and modern life with notes of harmony had to start from the core. From nature. We create contemporary structures by gently fitting them into the existing scope of everything that, as mentioned above, is nature and only nature. We underline the concept of sustainable.

The concept aims to create a functional whole—a mosaic that communicates a modern language while drawing on tradition as a fundamental element in shaping the new identity of the location. In all that is enduring and transcends time lies the essence of something deeply rooted. Four walls enclose the space, defining its edges and encapsulating a sense of past existence. They provide contours to something that has long been here and will continue to endure for generations to come.

This project embodies a multidisciplinary approach to design, culminating in a cohesive final product: a book that captures the interpretation of the location through the collaborative efforts of an architect, writer, illustrator, and photographer, all united in a single, unique work.

REGION I - TRAFFIC ANALYSIS

Region I consists of four distinct zones: a forest area featuring an old house, an agricultural area, a residential area, and an eco-village area. Each zone is characterized by different structures tailored to its specific context, resulting in four unique architectural typologies. All these typologies are well-connected to the main road and are conveniently located just 30 minutes from the historic Royal capital of Cetinje and the capital city of Podgorica.

OLD HOUSE

An old house in contemporary times stands as a vital connection to tradition, reflecting a robust character. It symbolizes the enduring nature of a structure that, within the mosaic of time, has opted to remain on this land, defying the passage of time and the threat of oblivion.

With the same contours and an enduring desire to leave an impression, the house continues to captivate visitors today, just as it did in the past, serving as their temporary sanctuary.

With a modern touch in its interior and equal charm on the exterior, it exerts an irresistible allure on all who approach. It offers a sense of safety that is unique to this part of the world, where the harmony of elements—stone, earth, and water—encapsulates the essence of life.

Eternal. Distinct. A point in the universe and yet, a universe unto itself. This space embodies an enduring connection to all that inhabits it, fostering a deep sense of belonging. It invites you to explore a new perspective.

With its rich tapestry of experiences, this house offers not merely shelter but a connection to something greater, our inner being, where every moment holds significance and every presence is cherished.

A passage from book “KLEKA”:

“The journey toward freedom is the greatest of all human endeavors. On this path of life flows that are similar to the flows of nature, understanding happens almost spontaneously, as if innate.

Where the act of birth takes place, where support is created, where wings and arms carelessly spread and enter into free movement through the universe - an irresistible desire to exist is born. In all its forms and states, breathing freedom to the fullest marks our time on earth in the most beautiful of ways. When you step here, choose a shape. Adapt, act, leave a mark. Get used to the place under the stone and juniper and let it get used to you. Let this place be a clear position of where you were, where you are, or where you will be.

Open your eyes wide: what you see is the definition of a cross-section of the quiet worlds.

This, right here, is freedom.”

The main concept of the design is "Back to Nature!" This facility is crafted with ecological principles in mind, integrating both passive and active measures that significantly reduce energy consumption and promote environmental protection.

Outdoor landscaping enhances this vision by incorporating elements that provide natural shade during the summer, such as green pergolas, while strategically placing deciduous trees in the backyard to facilitate passive solar energy use in winter. A portion of the courtyard is allocated for waste management, with designated containers for different types of waste to promote sustainability and proper disposal practices. For the convenience of kitchen and laundry staff, a specialized parking area has been integrated into the design, allowing for easy access to their workspaces.

At the entrance, a checkpoint is established for entry control, featuring a scale and an office for the storekeeper, ensuring organized management of incoming goods.

Additionally, a designated inventory storage area is provided for damaged furniture, complete with a hands-on workshop, allowing for repairs and maintenance to be conducted on-site. This thoughtful planning ensures that the operational aspects of the facility run efficiently while maintaining a focus on sustainability and functionality.

FIRST FLOOR

On the first floor, a dedicated triage area for the nursery is designed, featuring a designated space for sick children and a waiting room for parents. This arrangement prioritizes comfort and accessibility, ensuring that families feel supported during their visit.

Adjacent to the triage area is a glass-enclosed administration zone, complete with a sanitary block. The use of large glass surfaces and skylights allows natural light to flood the hall and offices, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere.

The green roof terrace serves as an extension of the interior spaces, bringing nature closer to employees while enhancing the overall ambience. This integration of greenery not only promotes a calming environment but also contributes to the facility's commitment to sustainability and well-being, offering a tranquil space for both staff and visitors to enjoy.

The facility is designed in alignment with ecological principles, integrating both passive and active measures that significantly reduce energy consumption and enhance environmental protection. The external landscaping is thoughtfully shaped to provide natural shade during the summer, utilizing features such as a green pergola. This design not only cools the space but also creates an inviting atmosphere.

In addition, the strategic placement of deciduous trees in the yard allows for passive solar energy utilization during the winter months. As these trees shed their leaves, they permit sunlight to warm the building, further minimizing energy needs. This harmonious blend of design and nature fosters a sustainable environment that promotes both comfort and ecological responsibility.

The building's design thoughtfully addresses noise control and comfort by featuring smaller openings on the north facade, effectively shielding it from the bustling street. In contrast, the south side opens generously to the inner courtyard, fostering a connection with nature and enhancing the play environment. Natural ventilation is a key consideration, with strategically placed skylights that promote airflow from the multipurpose hall upwards, ensuring hygienic conditions throughout the indoor spaces.

The playful facade, combined with clearly defined functional areas, encourages exploration and creativity. Each zone seamlessly connects with the interactive outdoor spaces, providing an inspiring environment for children's curious minds to thrive. This design not only prioritizes functionality but also nurtures a sense of wonder and engagement, making it an ideal setting for early childhood development.

REINTERPRETATION OF THE OLD FORTRESS AND MINING SETTLEMENT BRSKOVO

III prize

Project type: Competition / Urban design and architecture

Project year: 2024

Location: Mojkovac

Area: 13.5 ha

The competition task envisioned a reinterpretation of the medieval historical core of Brskovo, a once-thriving mining center in the Tara Valley, known for its rich mineral deposits. This initiative is deeply rooted in respect for the city’s historical narrative, aiming to preserve its identity while forging a path toward modernity.

The design concept emphasizes the use of historical architectural forms, seamlessly integrating contemporary interventions through innovative applications of stone and timber. By employing adaptive reuse strategies, the project seeks to revitalize historic architectural forms, repurposing them in ways that honor their original context while addressing contemporary needs.

The arrangement of the new complex draws inspiration from the layout of the Brskovo archaeological site, serving as a foundational matrix for the design. This approach not only honors the historical significance of the site but also ensures that the new development is in harmony with its archaeological context. Additionally, insights from relevant literature regarding the positioning of historical contents have been meticulously integrated into the planning process. This comprehensive understanding of both the archaeological findings and historical context informs the spatial organization, creating a cohesive narrative that connects past and present.

By thoughtfully considering these elements, the design aims to enhance the visitor experience while preserving the integrity of Brskovo's rich heritage, ultimately fostering a deeper appreciation for the history that shaped the region

From the analysis, several key conclusions were drawn that significantly informed the design solution:

Religious Structures Orientation: Both religious buildings, despite representing different faiths, share a similar orientation. This observation highlights a cultural connection and a potential communal relationship between the two, suggesting that the design should respect this alignment to enhance spiritual cohesion in the community.

Proximity of Mining Shafts to Water: The historical requirement for mining shafts to be situated near water surfaces, driven by metal processing technology, underscores the importance of this geographical feature. The design will reflect this historical context, potentially incorporating water features that pay homage to the mining heritage while promoting sustainable practices in the modern layout.

The observations drawn from the analysis of the existing locality were thoughtfully integrated into the new design, allowing for a meaningful interpretation of the site's historical context.

Fortress Orientation: The remains of the original fortress exhibit an east-west orientation. In the new location, the fortress is similarly aligned, carefully adapting to the updated terrain configuration and project requirements. This alignment not only honors the historical orientation but also ensures that the fortress retains its role as a prominent landmark in the landscape.

Religious Buildings: The newly designed religious structures, representing different faiths, are oriented in the same direction as their historical counterparts. This intentional mirroring fosters a sense of continuity and authenticity, recreating the spiritual atmosphere of the original site. By maintaining this alignment, the design seeks to evoke the cultural significance of these buildings, reinforcing their historical connection to the community.

"In the event that the pit being explored reveals significant potential, the mining field is designated, indicating the area available for underground expansion." The process of establishing a mining field was known as "the wedding," symbolically represented by placing a wreath at the entrance of the pit, signifying the field's promising prospects.

This mining field typically takes the form of a circular area, encompassing approximately 100 square meters, with the entrance of the pit positioned centrally.

POSITIONING THE STRUCTURES

the existing state of the Brskovo site, with access points, and the existing greenery.

positioning of physical structures in relation to orientation and the existing conditions at the Brskovo site is crucial for creating a harmonious integration of the new development with its historical context

Incorporating courtyards around the buildings in a matrix layout emphasizes the organic, unpredictable forms typical of medieval cities. This approach not only enhances the architectural narrative but also fosters a dynamic interaction between built and natural environments.

The center formed between the buildings, conceptualized as a square, will be materialized with broken stone to emphasize its role as a public area within the matrix.

URBANISTIC CONCEPT ON THE NEW LOCATION

The market is an essential component of the square, echoing the historical role of communal gathering and trade from the medieval period. Inspired by the Dinaric house, the market's design is derived from a modular approach, consisting of four smaller structures that harmoniously come together to create a vibrant marketplace. The market’s design is based on interconnected modules, each representing a separate vendor space.

This configuration allows for flexibility in use while fostering a sense of community among the sellers and customers. Each building reflects the traditional architectural style of the Dinaric house, characterized by sloping roofs and local materials, ensuring the market resonates with the cultural identity of Mojkovac. The use of wood and stone ties the structures to the historical context of the region.

The settlement will feature two types of houses, comprising five accommodation units in total. Four of these units are designed for rental, while one is reserved for the owner. The architectural style draws from traditional Dinaric house forms, showcasing characteristics such as sloped roofs and wooden façades. Contemporary design elements are seamlessly integrated, offering a fresh interpretation of the traditional structure, making it appealing for today’s travelers. The use of natural wood for the exterior not only enhances the aesthetic but also provides warmth and comfort, creating a cozy atmosphere.

Nestled in the heart of the forest, these houses offer guests a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in nature while enjoying modern comforts. In summary, the planned accommodations combine traditional Dinaric architecture with modern design, creating inviting spaces that celebrate the surrounding natural beauty.

This design reinterprets the traditional Dinaric house, blending its essence with modern architectural elements. The four residential units reflect the original house's quarters, symbolizing the segmented nature of traditional living spaces. This harmonious blend of tradition and modernity allows guests to experience the rich cultural heritage of the Dinaric region while enjoying the comforts of contemporary living.

The conceptual design of the fortress draws heavily from historical literature and archaeological research related to ancient fortifications, ensuring that the form, materials, and proportions align with the site's historical context. The structure is thoughtfully crafted to include characteristic architectural elements from the medieval period, preserving the authenticity of the space. The fortress is defined by robust ramparts and four distinct towers, emphasizing its historical significance and defensive nature.

The fortress is divided into two functional units: a wider section that houses a congress center with 50 seats and a museum, along with necessary technical rooms. Entry to these facilities is from an inner courtyard at the fortress entrance, which serves as the main navigation point within the complex.

On the first floor, a terrace doubles as a café space, providing access to the ramparts and offering stunning views from the elevated areas. Visitors can explore the ramparts or step up to a higher terrace above the museum. The narrower section culminates in a prominent circular tower, featuring a souvenir shop on the ground floor and a lookout point on the first floor. This adds both commercial and experiential value to the fortress. The fortress includes two additional smaller circular towers: one adjacent to the southern façade, which functions as a kitchen on the ground level and as a café/restaurant above, and another on the northern façade that provides a staircase, enhancing circulation throughout the fortress.

The highest square tower is strategically positioned at the western edge, serving as a focal point and reinforcing the fortress's imposing presence. This design not only respects the historical lineage of the site but also transforms it into a vibrant space that fosters community engagement, cultural appreciation, and education. The integration of modern functionalities within a historically authentic framework offers visitors a unique experience that bridges past and present.

This project reimagines the essence of the medieval settlement of Brskovo, where history resonates through every space and form. The design concept emerges from a profound connection to the original town's linear layout, reflecting how life once unfolded sequentially from the fortress outward, embodying the rhythms of medieval existence. The fortress, positioned as a sentinel on the eastern edge, serves as a steadfast anchor to the past, while the settlement gracefully flows westward, weaving a narrative of intertwined private and public life. As visitors enter from the east, they are guided along a tree-lined path that evokes a sense of stepping back in time. A tower rises at this threshold, reminiscent of the ancient city gates, inviting exploration and deeper engagement with the settlement. Throughout this journey, subtle moments of discovery unfold, with each space designed to evoke fragments of medieval life. At the heart of this experience lies a buried restaurant, artfully concealed beneath an artificial mound. This hidden gem emerges as a secret beneath the earth, deliberately understated to allow the authenticity of the past to take center stage.

In this reimagined Brskovo, the architectural narrative not only honors historical significance but also invites visitors to immerse themselves in a living tapestry of culture and tradition, fostering a profound connection to the heritage of this remarkable place.
