Who We Are
We affirm that: God created us. Christ died for us. The Holy Spirit dwells in us.
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual Catholics belong to Christ’s mystical body. We are not visitors asking to be tolerated. We are not questions waiting to be solved. DignityUSA works for the full inclusion and equality of LGBTQIA+ people in Catholic communities, in public life, and in every place where dignity has been treated as conditional.
We affirm that sexuality, gender identity, and gender expression can be lived sincerely, lovingly, responsibly, and authentically.
Love is not made holy by hiding. A life is not made faithful by pretending to be someone else.
Why should any beloved child of God be kept from the fullness of the Church’s life? Many traditional parish LGBTQ outreach efforts offer a sincere welcome, but that welcome can still come with limits. People may be invited to attend Mass, sit in the pews, receive pastoral care, or join a support group. Yet they may still encounter limits around marriage, leadership, service roles, family recognition, or full access to the sacraments DignityUSA calls for something fuller. We call on the Roman Catholic Church to ensure that all sacraments and roles in our church are available regardless of gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, or marital or relational status.
DignityUSA envisions something different, a circle. In a circle, every person can see and be seen. Every voice can be heard. No one is more valued than anyone else. This does not mean everyone has the same gifts or calling. It means every person has equal worth, equal membership, and the freedom to discern how God may be calling them.
Traditional institutional outreach is often shaped like a pyramid: LGBTQIA+ people may be welcomed at the base-but still blocked from moving upward or participating equally in the life of the community.
If your parish is striving to be supportive and inclusive and you want our church and world to keep improving, your story, hopes, and dreams matter to DignityUSA.
DignityUSA envisions a Church where LGBTQIA+ people do not have to choose between honesty and belonging. A Church where no one is denied sacramental life or membership because of who they are, whom they love, their gender identity, or their relationship status. A Church where LGBTQIA+ people and our families are not treated as an exception to mercy, but as visible signs of God’s abundant love.
DignityUSA works for a Church and world where LGBTQIA+ people can live, love, worship, serve, lead, and receive the sacraments in full equality.
You are made in God’s image. You are loved. You belong.
