Robin Kang Works… For Robin, the history of connections between textiles and electronics provides inspiration alongside the cultural identification of the ephemeral patterns of a digital age. Her tapestry work is created with inspiration from the history of the Jacquard loom as one of the first binary operated machines that utilized the punchcard system and arguably an ancestor to the invention of the first computer. She hand weaves tapestries that combine digital mark making and computer imagery. The juxtaposition of textiles with technology opens an interesting conversation of reconciling the old with the new, traditions with new possibilities, as well as the relationship between textiles and language. Questioning the presence of the human hand amid a fast changing digital and commercial culture, Kang takes imagery from the now and places in conversation with an ancient craft.
