PRESIDENT'S NOTE Dear Graduates: Leave-taking, as Shakespeare wisely put it, is always a "sweet sorrow."

The

sorrow of leaving friends, teachers, and the campus that has been home is probably foremost in your minds as you put behind your Westbrook days and prepare for a new phase in your lives.

But why is such sorrow "sweet"? The memories are good ones that will sustain you as you face new challenges and achieve new successes.

Often in life

you'll look back to late-night discussions in the dorm, jokes shared at lunch, exciting classes where new insights came like lightning to illuminate unimagined pieces of the landscape of thought. The good people you knew at Westbrook will be your friends for life, regardless of how frequently you see them in the future. They become an integral part of you, enriching all you do.

If you haven't yet discovered it, you'll soon see that sorrow and sweetness run through life in an ever-changing mix. You should cherish both, celebrating the good people and good times you leave behind and making them part of the new life that every day you are building.

Westbrook has given much to each of you. And each of you has given much to Westbrook. I salute, congratulate, and thank all of you. Please know that as your life unfolds, we at your alma mater continue to share with you, even at a remove, the sweet sorrow that every change you experience will bring.
