Dedication All of whom were involved in the dedication decision process found it to be a difficult decision. This proves the fact that we have many outstanding faculty members at Westbrook College. There is one name that arose frequently. The Tower is dedicated to a man who serves this college in many ways. When discussing this decision, the words caring, humorous, enthusiastic, hard working and intelligent were exposed. This man is intellectually curious and tries to instill this quality in his students. He is concerned with the growth of his students. He was elected to speak at commencement in 1976 and again in 1980. He serves on the Academic Council and chairs the Cultural Affairs Committee. He is the director of both the Liberal Arts Curriculum and the Elderhostel program. He was a major influence in the re-birth of the Westbrook College News. This year marks his tenth year as a faculty member at Westbrook College. He is dedicated in the true sense of the word. We, the Tower staff of 1984 dedicate this edition to Dr. Bradford Daziei, alias Dr. " D " .

CLASS OF 198-1, presents a brief moment in a lifetime of exf experiences. Your years on the Westbrook campus were preceded by the excitement and anxiety of youthful development; the years which follow will, I hope, be full of the rich experiences leading to a full and happy life. On such a spectrum, your time at Westbrook may seem startlingly brief. Hut, it is the quality of the time, not the quantity, that should be remembered. Your Westbrook friends, your college-related achievements, and your personal growth should be at the heart of the Westbrook experience you carry far into the future. Finally, though your years here have been a finite period in your life, the Westbrook College community of which you are a part is continuous. You carry a vested interest in the welfare of future student bodies at Westbrook, just as those who have preceded you have supported your years here. Maintain communication with this Westbrook community, and it will provide for each of you a rich and rewarding relationship throughout your lifetime.

Woodfords-West In mid-fall when the leaves are turning beautiful shades of red, amber and yellow, classes are in full swing. We walk to and from campus buildings and view a group of rosey cheeked people busy at work raking leaves. They seem cheerful and always smile and wave when acknowledged. They also return to campus in the spring and do more landscaping. The question arises, who are these dedicated peope who leave our campus immaculately groomed? They are students at Woodfords-West Education Center. Their work here is field experience supervised by Bob Hodgdon. This is a째 educational program preparing these young people for jobs in the community. Not only does it assist enabling them to be contributing members of society, but they learn self-worth, esteem, and team work. We look forward to seeing them in the spring. The Editors

Student Government Association is comprised of both seniors and freshmen and is large in numbers with over thirty members. Elections are held in the fall and in the spring. Student leadership is a very special part of Westbrook College. This year we have initiated many social, academic, and cultural projects that we are proud o(. Some include staffing Welcome Week, creating a new tutoring program, endorsing the Convocation Series, hosting Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, working on an International Student day, organizing a student task force to study alcohol and its role here on campus, and planning three student/trustee events. We have undertaken an action-oriented role and have all learned new skills valuable for our careers. We look forward to meeting the newly elected members of S.G.A. The Editors

Admissions Assistants are students selected by the Admissions Office to represent the College and their own curricula to prospective students, parents, guidance counselors and other guests of the College. Students involved in this special group are selected based on their enthusiasm, commitment to the College and their sense of public relations. In addition to conducting campus tours, Admissions Assistants organize special events for the Admissions Office, such as Caravan to Campus, Career Days, and an annual visit by guidance counselors from across the country. They also coordinate the overnight guest program, serving as hosts for students visiting the college, and Project Boomerang, where Westbrook students return to their hometown high schools to meet with students interested in attending Westbrook. The goal of the Admissions Assistants is to support the admissions program and to help increase enrollment at Westbrook. The Admissions Assistants of 1983-84 have been very effective in doing this. Westbrook College is a kaleidoscope of different curriculums, organizations, activities, and age groups. The Westbrook College News was started during the summer of 1983 in the hopes of providing these diverse groups with a tool for communication with the rest of the college community. Used by some as an outlet for creativity, by others to vent anger, and by still others as a publicity tool, the News has become a valued part of campus life. Initially quite small, by the end of the fall semester the staff of the paper had grown to a large but tightly-knit group of students who made many personal sacrifices to produce the paper each week. The hard work, determination and cooperation we all experienced helped us to grow — not just in numbers, but in skill, insight, and understanding. Those of us who are Seniors will miss the paper and the friends we made while working on it, but we take pride in the belief that we are leaving Westbrook just a little bit better than when we found it. The Art of Adventure Create mental pictures of your goals, then work to make those pictures become realities. Exercise your God-given power to choose your own direction and influence your own destiny and try to decide wisely and well. Have the daring to open doors to new experiences and to step boldly forth to explore strange horizons. Be unafraid of new ideas, new theories and new philosophies. Have the curiosity to experiment. . . to test and try new ways of living and thinking. Recognize that the only ceiling life has is the one you give it. You are surrounded by infinite possibilities for growth and achievement Keep your heart young and your expectations high and never allow your dreams to die. by Wilfred A. Peterson

International
The international student program at Westbrook College has had a great start. Under the direction of Dr. Boyd Morros Westbrook has joined the international community. In its first year the program has attracted four students from very varied backgrounds; Kiyoshi Takano from Japan, Anna Roncarati from Italy, Alexandra-Merivale-Austin from England, and Leslie Hamburger from Colombia. Kiyoshi Takano Kiyoshi is a new student in the Westbrook community. He arrived for the spring semester and has managed to become an integral part of our lives. His quick wit has put him in everybody's heart. Kiyoshi was born in Tokyo, Japan and after graduating from Seiko High he attended West Virginia University. After his first semester there he decided to visit New England, so he transfered to Westbrook's Business Administration program. Anna Roncarati Anna is one of the two recipients of the Edmund S. Muskie International Scholarship, and she is presently enrolled in the Business Administration program. She came to us from The Hague, Holland where she attended the American High School. Anna was born in Ferrara, Italy, but because of her Father's work she has had to travel extensively. This ability to easily adjust to new environments and her characteristic friendliness have won her many friends in Westbrook. She can't decide on what she likes best about Westbrook, but she knows it feels good to be here. Leslie Hamburger Leslie is the second recipient of the Edmund S. Muskie International Scholarship. She comes from the American school in Barranquilla, Colombia. Her first experience with New England has been a memorable one. She will always remember people's friendliness and their willingness to help. Leslie has taken to her new home with great ease and has become an ever-present member of this community. Alexandra Merivale- Austin Alexandra arrived last fall from London, England. She is following the Fashion Merchandising and Retailing program. By means of her internship Alex has acquired the experience of working in an American store. She will carry this with her as background for when she returns home. Alex is living in McDougall Hall where she has created a home away from home among her numerous friends. Her enthusiasm and modern outlook have been a refreshing addition to the Westbrook environment.

Birches When I see birches bend to left and right Across the line of straighter darker trees, I like to Think some boy's been swinging them. But swinging doesn't bend them down to stay. Ice-storms do that. Often you must have seen them Loaded with ice a sunny winter morning After a rain. They click upon themselves As the breeze rises, and turn many-colored As the stir cracks and crazes their enamel. Soon the sun's warmth makes them shed crystal shells Shattering and avalanching on the snow-crust — Such heaps of broken glass to sweep away You'd think the inner dome of heaven had fallen. They are dragged to the withered bracken by the load, And they seem not to break; though once they are bowed So low for long, they never right themselves: You may see their trunks arching in the woods Years afterwards, trailing their leaves on the ground Like girls on hands and knees that throw their hair Before them over their heads to dry in the sun. But I was going to say when Truth broke in With all her matter-of-fact about the ice-storm I should prefer to have some boy bend them
150
As he went out and in to fetch the cows — Some boy too far from town to learn baseball, Whose only play was what he found himself, Summer or winter, and could play alone. One by one he subdued his father's trees By riding them down over and over again Until he took the stiffness out of them, And not one but hung limp, not one was left For him to conquer. He learned all there was To learn about not launching out too soon And so not carrying the tree away Clear to the ground. He always kept his poise To the top branches, climbing carefully With the same pains you use to fill a cup Up to the brim, and even above the brim. Then he flung outward, feet first, with a swish, Kicking his way down through the air to the ground. So was I once myself a swinger of birches; And so I dream of going back to be. It's when I'm weary of considerations, And life is too much like a pathless wood Where your face burns and tickles with the cobwebs Broken across it, and one eye is weeping From a twig's having lashed across it open.

to get away from earth awhile d then come back to it and begin ove no fate willfully misunderstand me d half grant what I wish and snatch me away ot to return. Earth's the right place for love: don't know where it's likely to go better. I'd like to go by climbing a birch tree, And climb black branches up a snow-white trunk Toward heaven, till the tree could bear no more, But dipped its top and set me down again. That would be good both going and coming back One could do worse than be a swinger of birches. Robert Fro

It is hard to believe the last pages of the Tower have been completed. As I look back on this war of editorship. I am overwhelmed by the amount of support the Westbrook College community has exemplified. This edition would not have been possible without all the people who came together to lend us a hand. I would like to thank the following people for their contributions: Bruce Kidman for his technical advice and numerous photographs, Darcy Scott for her assistance with the dedication. Kent Taylor for his fund raising efforts. Dr. Courtice for supplying the information on the Woodford kids. Dean Mallat for supplying information on the student leaders, the nursing department for allowing us to use the conference room, parents for their financial help. Bill Miner for his artwork, Gail Osgood and Tom Jones for all their hard work photographing seniors and faculty, Vic Holan for layout instructions, the Tower staff for all their long nights of layout and fundraising activities, I would like to lend a special thanks to Mrs. Beverly White, our advisor, for her insight, enthusiasm, and dedication to the staff. We love you! I thank you all gratefully for helping to make the L984 Tower the Special book that it is. Ma\ all of you here at Westbrook College have a safe and happy summer and good luck to the members of the class of 10S i in whatever you pursue upon graduation.
