1905 - 1961 Too seldom remembered and too easily forgotten

A study of Dag Hammarskjold invariably reveals his intelligence but often fails to point u p his perception and comprehension of not only people but of himself as well. Fortunately, he leaves his Markings to us, the generation of the future, as a heritage upon which we can draw. Until our minds are enlightened by such a tragedy as his death, we fail to recognize how vital his leadership was. In this year in which the hope of peace has been the great common cause of people everywhere, the Tower staff has chosen to speak through Dag Hammarskjold, the man of peace. This is the time to remember. . . Nancy Johnson Editor, The Tower '66

Before an important decision someone clutches your hand — a glimpse of gold in the iron gray, the proof of all you have ever dared to believe.

I

m

Dedication Seldom is found such a rare combination of versatility and skill, plus a never ending desire to help — we can truly say that these attributes have made you an outstanding individual in our minds. The concrete rewards are very small, but there still remains the personal feeling of satisfaction regardless of the undertaking. To you, Mrs. Dorothy Healy, we, the Class of 1966 offer this tangible proof of our immense gratitude.

President on the Go A college president with a sensitivity to civic responsibility can be kept very much on the run these days. He is often in demand to act in an advisory capacity or to offer active leadership on specific projects. President Blewett is a good example of such a president on the go. His list of activities include Chairman of the City of Portland Advisory Committee; President of the New England Junior College Council; Chairman of the Governor's Council on Art and Culture; Chairman of the Community Mental Health Centers Advisory Council of the State of Maine; Member, Advisory Commission for the Higher Education Study for the State, as well as member of the State's Health Facilities Advisory Council and the Mental Retardation Facilities Advisory Council.

SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS

Arlene Plennert (secretary), Elizabeth Bourn (vice-president), Sheryl Walsh (president) Donna Craig (treasurer).

SENIOR CLASS ADVISORS A MESSAGE FROM THE CLASS PRESIDENT Today's competitive society demands the trained intelligence of its people. Higher education today is dedicated to academic excellence that encompasses two broad objectives: the cultivation of the mind and spirit; and the development of the intellect into a specific channel that will lead to a productive career. Within the range of our varied interests and abilities, Westbrook has led us to excellence in both areas. We have been introduced to ideas and to the arts and have learned that the pursuit of knowledge can be an exciting, growing, changing experience. We have also had opportunity to follow a specific line of study or skill in order that we may have some concept of the working world and what our eventual place in it may be. We have evolved from unsophisticated individuals to individual personalities with a unique, self-acquired philosophy. I feel confident that in future years, as we look back at our Westbrook experience, we will remember these days as an outstanding, influential period of our lives. Sheryl Walsh President, Class of 1966 Mr. Roberts and Mr. Twaddel.

Freshmen Class Officers And Advisors A MESSAGE FROM THE CLASS PRESIDENT Every freshman enters college in search for something new — new knowledge, new friends, new ideas. Westbrook has much to offer of both concrete and abstract value to any student who wants her education to be an enriching as well as learning experience. We freshmen must realize, however, before it is too late, that if our two years here are to be fruitful we must make our lives a part of the Westbrook life. We will then leave college with the same spirit of enthusiasm with which we entered, because we will know we have given our best as both students and individual personalities. When we leave Westbrook, a part of us must remain here, a part of our commitment to our college as the place where, in two important years of our lives, we did find something of value — new knowledge, new friends, new ideas. Light without a visible source, the pale gold of a new day. Low bushes, their soft silk-gray leaves silvered with dew. All over the hills, the cool red of the cat'sfoot in flower. A blue horizon. Emerging from the ravine where a brook runs under a canopy of leaves, I walk out onto a wide open slope. Drops, sprinkled by swaying branches, glitter on my hands, cool my forehead, and evaporate in the morning breeze.

A game against the faculty is hoped to be scheduled to end the successful season.

Once spring arrives and the snow finally melts, the tennis courts will be occupied with those seeking pleasure and practice in another favorite sport on campus. Practice is especially necessary for those six players on the TENNIS TEAM, who are working for improvement in their competition. Matches have been arranged with Kents Hill, Deering High School, and Colby College. Mrs. Hewes, coach of the team is anticipating a winning season.

SKIING has surged forward as the most popular sport at WJC with over 150 students stemming and turning on the slopes weekly at Bridgton. Westbrook is proud to present its first ski team. The team has been doubly honored by its acceptance as a member of the New England Ski Conference, for each year only one college is invited to participate in this organization. This year the skiers have practiced going through the gates at Pleasant Mountain. We wish the shushers the best of luck in competition next year.
