H a p p y is the teacher whose classroom is infused with a spirit of optimism and good-will; whose buoyant enthusiasm helps lift the perplexed student over hurdles of skill and concentration that once seemed too high; whose interest in young people is genuinely warm-hearted, but, touched with a sense of realism, is never sentimental. And happy the students in that classroom. You are such a teacher. The twinkle in your eyes and your contagious, slightly off-center smile have won our affectionate regard; your good-humored but always uncompromising adherence to high standards has won our respect; your ready willingness to participate in our activities and to counsel us when we have sought help has won our gratitude. In the spirit of your own personality, it is with happy cheerfulness that we, the Class of 1964, dedicate this edition of T H E T O W E R to you, Mr. Vaughn Twaddel, instructor since 1959 in the Department of Business Education.

June, 1964, will mark not only the end of two years of college education for the class of '64, but also the end of the teaching careers at Westbrook of Mr. Marshall Bryant and Mr. Robert Imlay. Mr. Bryant, Chairman of the Department of Humanities, has been with the College for thirteen years. Formerly a member of the music department at the University of Missouri and for many years a distinguished teacher of voice in New York City, Mr. Bryant has brought a cosmopolitan touch to the Westbrook scene. His characteristic urbane manner and his nice sense of discrimination have been felt by Westbrook students in the classroom and on the concert stage. While demanding a quality performance from the Westbrook Chorus, he still nourished, as well, the pure enjoyment of good music among students who were not themselves to be professional musicians. His good influence will be long remembered by his students and colleagues alike. Robert Imlay has been a vital, distinctive personality on the Westbrook campus since 1950. He is infused with a youthful enthusiasm for the world of ideas and ideals. He is the "Rennaisance man" in the 20th century: in an age of specialization he dares to pursue Truth and Beauty over a broad spectrum. Mr. Imlay will be best remembered, we think, by his students and friends at Westbrook in two ways: in visual reality by his own work and that of his students in ceramics and in our imaginations by his refreshing encouragement of the will to learn in us all. To both Mr. Bryant and Mr. Imlay in this year of their retirement, the Class of 1964 extends its appreciation for all that they have meant to the College over the years and to this class in particular and with this appreciation go our best wishes for many happy and fruitful years ahead.

The Class of 1964 is aware of all that our President and a dynamic Board of Trustees have accomplished in expanding the campus facilities. We, too, are proud of over a million dollars worth of buildings which have gone u p in the past six years, but, equally important, we feel, is the concern for the intellectual and social development of the students which both President and Mrs. Blewett have expressed. For your thoughtfulness and for your unlimited interest, President and Mrs. Blewett, we, the Class of 1964, say "thank you." 10

Dean Bond, a friend as well as a respected leader, is well known to every member of the Westbrook family. He is found in his office, on the green, or in the caf eagerly listening to problems and very willingly giving advice. Always working in full understanding and with the complete cooperation of the student body, our Dean is the admired personification of an administrative leader.

At the opening of College, a change occurred in the office of the Dean of Residence when Miss Joyce K. Bibber assumed the duties of our former Dean, Miss Margaret L. Giroux. Miss Giroux, who is presently serving as an instructor in the Retailing Curriculum, will always b e remembered as one of our first and most helpful friends. In September, we welcomed the start of our Senior year and our new Dean. Dean Bibber has done much through the year to win the trust, confidence and faith of Westbrook by her wide and deep interest in the students, an interest amply demonstrated by her untiring work with varied campus organizations.

a message from the class president CLASS OFFICERS

When the Class of 1964 entered Westbrook Junior College, we were all aware of the many challenges that lay ahead. Now the future that was then a far horizon is close upon us. The late President Kennedy once pointed out the wisdom of an ancient Chinese proverb: "A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step." In the journey of our lifetime we have taken that step. We are only now beginning to realize and more fully appreciate the true meaning of college life. The ultimate measure of this meaning will be demonstrated by the way in which we put to use what we have found at Westbrook. Our experiences have made us what we are. What we accomplish in the future depends upon the foundations we have laid. Upon graduation the preparations of the past will end and the opportunities of the future begin. Perhaps no generation of Americans has ever faced a world in which despair and hope, darkness and light, good and evil, were more dramatically counterpoised. It is for us to be on the side of hope and of light and of good. May each single step in the "journey of a thousand miles" that lies ahead of each of us be in this direction.

When the door has closed on our last class at Westbrook, when the chapel bell has summoned us for the last time and the last "Dining-In" has been held, the final good-byes said, the immediate past will already be dissolving into memories. We hope that the first purpose of any educational institution — the adventure of learning, appreciating, doing — will be at the heart of many of your fondest memories. The governing body of Westbrook is the Student Council. Its membership consists of one representative and an alternate from each of the freshman dorms, each senior resident house, and from the day student group. In addition to its regular functions, the Student Council sponsored a student government conference in November attended by representatives of seven other New England and New York junior colleges. Out of the conference came the idea of an honor system here at Westbrook. This proposal is now under consideration by the council. Like any other authoritative group the council is concerned with the upholding of all official rules of the college. Co-operating with the administration they work for a beneficial student-faculty relationship. Officers were as follows: Jean Kwok, President; Marthalie Johnston, Vice President; Susan Lancaster, Secretary; and Susan Powers, Treasurer.

After sponsoring Freshman Orientation in the Fall, the Jay Dees serve as official hostesses for the college, act as liaison between students and the administration, as well as direct many projects of their own. Under the able leadership of their officers, President, Lindy Burr; Vice-President, Jean Taylor; Secretary-Treasurer, Daryl Geer; and their advisor, Dean Bibber, these girls serve to exemplify the spirit of the "Westbrook Way."

The dramatic club at Westbrook first assumed its name, "The Masque and Candle," in 1940 and its symbolism still makes the club's n a m e appropriate today. "The play's the thing," said Hamlet, "wherein I'll catch the conscience of the king." Thus does the high craft of the theater seek in both comedy and tragedy to reveal the truth. T h e Masque and Candle offers opportunity to the student to experiment with this craft in all its various forms â€” acting, staging, production, and make up. Dramatic coach this year has been Mr. Steven Kardaleff assisted by the club officers, Maryeileen Callahan, President; Barbara Eklund, Vice-President; Suzanne Reardon, Secretary; Elizabeth Oshry, Treasurer. The first production of the year was John Millington Synge's one-act poetic tragedy, "Riders to the Sea." The major spring production was "Thurber's Carnival."

From the nerve-wracking auditions of early autumn to the often hilarious, always pleasure-filled outing at Mr. Bryant's farm, the year of the Chorus members is a busy one. This season in addition to the annual appearances at local service clubs, the Chorus proudly revived a yearly custom at Westbrook â€” t h e early spring campus concert. Assistance was extended on this occasion by the dance group and the Faux Pas. While one is en route to or from Proctor one may often hear the clear, melodious voices of the twelve members of the Faux Pas as they practice for another program in their busy schedule. For the past several years, this informal group of songsters, under the distinguished direction of Mr. Richard Roberts, has achieved considerable acclaim. Their original arrangements and distinctive a cappella style account for much of their popularity. In the 1963-64 season the Faux Pas have sung at a number of events both on and off campus. As the Tower goes to press the group looks forward to an appearance on an all-Maine college television program and an exciting performing trip to the New York World's Fair. 87

The Modern Dance Club is a division of the Women's Athletic Association. The advisor and instructor for the group is Mrs. Jean Miller and the President is Pamela Gore. The group provided entertainment for Parents' Weekend and gave a concert in March. The traditional event of the year is their dance concert during May Weekend. They are also performing this year at the New York World's Fair. This group at W J C provides an opportunity for the students to familiarize themselves with one more facet of the Arts.

Westbrook's International Relations Club is a group which endeavors to increase student knowledge of foreign countries and their affairs. The group sponsors discussions about world situations and speakers from foreign countries. The objective of the group is to acquaint not only their own members b u t all students on campus with international affairs and thereby to awaken intelligent thought on world problems. The advisor for the group is Mr. William Jordan and the officers for the year were Carol Howes, President; Angela Mooalim, Vice-President; Diana Ilnrtuk, Secretary-Treasurer; and Sharon Benoit, Publicity Chairman.

The Retailing Club is a group designed to acquaint more fully the students of this curriculum with various aspects of the retailing field. Programs sponsored by the group this year included a talk by President Blewett on his visit to Europe in relation to the European stores and modes in fashion. Previous to their Christmas work period a representative from John Robert Powers Modeling School briefed the girls on how to achieve a limited but successful wardrobe. The largest project for the club was their spring fashion show, organized and directed by student members of the club. The final activity of the club was the annual retailing b a n q u e t held to award the seniors their charms and to announce the new club officers. The club's officers this year were Martha Wentworth, President; Donna Peterson, Vice-President; Deborah Elolt, Secretary-Treasurer; Assistant SecretaryTreasurer, Alice Haskell; Betty Gene Herring, Social Chairman. These girls with the assistance of their advisor, Miss Constance Curry, have made this a successful year for the Retailing Club.

Westbrook's dental hygiene society is a junior chapter of the American Dental Hygienists' Association and is open only to students in this curriculum. This year's speakers and programs have been held in conjunction with the Portland Dental Association. In October, 1963, the senior students profited from a neverto-be-forgotten trip to Atlantic City, where they attended the National Dental Convention. The group's advisor is Miss Linda Preston, and officers for the year were Ann Gallagher, President; Jane Baker, Vice-President; Janice Osgood, Secretary, and Beverly Davidson, Treasurer.

The medical technology students at Westbrook enjoy the privilege of being affiliated student members of the national professional association, the American Society of Medical Technologists. Activities of this group are centered upon a serious study of what it means to be a medical technologist. Lectures by visiting experts, discussions and demonstrations, and field trips all serve to give added insight into the demands of the profession and help prepare the students for their important fourth year of study and training in an accredited hospital school of medical technology. Mr. John Gordon is advisor to the group.

From the Georgetown Conference in the fall came the idea for a new club on campus. The Fine Arts Council is m a d e u p of representatives from the non-athletic groups and is advised by Dean Bibber. The aim of the group is to stimulate an interest in the arts. Two areas of particular concern are music and drama. It is hoped that through this group, all students will become more aware of cultural activity and programs in the Portland area, as well as on Campus.

outing club council

The Outing Club is one of the most active clubs on the Westbrook campus. The purpose of the club is to make off-campus sporting activity available to students. Activities vary with the seasons, beginning in the fall with trips to the White Mountains. Winter rolled around and with it came tobogganing and ski trips to Sunday River. In January the club sponsored a mixer, "Ski Tracks" in the gym. Everyone enjoyed dancing to the music of the "Vectors" from Bowdoin College. The climax of the season is the traditional lobster and clambake held on the beach at Prout's Neck. With the help of their advisor, Miss Nancy Gilman, the club experienced a very successful year. Officers were Betty Gene Herring, President; Sue Cillis, VicePresident; Joan Adams, Secretary; and Judy Carleton, Treasurer.

The W J C tennis courts are very busy each afternoon during the fall and spring months. Under the direction of their coach, Mrs. Jean Miller, the team has daily practice sessions in preparation for various meets with such schools as Kents Hill, Deering High School, South Portland High School, and Waynflete School. Unfortunately, many fall matches were cancelled because of poor weather conditions. Those played were outstanding victories for Westbrook.

bowling team This years bowling team entered the Intercollegiate Bowling Competitions held at Boston University in February. Five schools entered this competition: University of Bridgeport, Boston University, University of Connecticut, Quinnipiac College, and Westbrook Junior College. Our own Nora Battiston brought credit to Westbrook by winning the Women's Singles Championship of New England. Nora was invited to enter the National Bowling Competition to be held in Minneapolis. Bowling proved to be an active sport for our class, both in gym classes and socially.

Tryouts for all-star basketball were held late in January this year. A team of ten girls was chosen by the coach, Miss Nancy Gilman. They included Joan Adams, Judy Belyea, Peggy Ellis, Phyllis Green, Sue Lancaster, Dudley Patten, Cynthia Picken, Jean Robinson, Shiela Tenney, and Captain Charlotte Stringer. During the mid-winter months, the W J C team met with other college competition from Saint Joseph's College, Plymouth Teachers College, Colby Junior College, and Gorham State Teachers College. Congratulations to the all-stars for their fine performances and high code of sportsmanship!

Fencing is a sport that demands constant training. Championship fencing, indeed, requires a discipline equal to that of the ballet. Westbrook's four-member fencing team has m a d e a strong effort this year to live u p to the high standards set by last year's team. They have met such competition as Wellesley College, Brandeis University, and Radcliffe College. The highlight of the season was the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Tournament, which was held in March. A later match was scheduled with women fencers from Bates College. The Fencing Team owes much to the leadership of Mrs. Miller and to the enthusiastic encouragement given to it by Dr. Miller and Mr. Joseph Demers. Westbrook fencers, both individually and as a team, invariably fare well even though they are often the only junior college students in competition.

may weekend 1963

May Queen â€” Marsha Ayres

Presented by the Class of 1964, the theme of the 1963 May Weekend was "State Fair." T h e weekend opened on Friday night with a lively "hoedown" enjoyed by students and faculty alike. On Saturday, activities included a picnic, the traditional pageant and a semi-formal dance. The festivities in the afternoon began with the crowning of lovely Marsha Ayres as Queen. The program which followed included interpretations of several lyric poems by the Modern Dance Club, the presentation of the Maroon Awards, the Blue Stocking award, and ribbons to the presidents of the campus organizations. The climax of the afternoon was the tapping of the Junior Deans. Nancy Osgood, President of the Freshman Class, was general chairman of the weekend. She was aided by Sue Drury, Leslie Waleryzak, Colette Styffe, Debby Scholfield, Phyllis Green, Martie Wentworth, Sibyl Nye, Jean Kwok, and Nancy Albertson. 102

Christmas weekend

The smile of a child can warm the heart of anyone. Many of these smiles of warmth and gratitude were found at the Annual Christmas Party, which served as a perfect beginning to our Christmas Weekend, "Prelude to Christmas." Presented by the Senior Class, it was a weekend of merriment and beauty â€” a weekend to be long remembered.

Who ever said that a winter carnival has to have snow? Ours didn't, and what a carnival it was! From the Friday-night sleighride to the Sunday-morning brunch, the weekend was one of fun and laughter. Many thanks to the Women's Athletic Association for their well-planned and successful weekend. Congratulations Peg!
