The tower, which now stands atop Moulton Chapel, was a gift to Westbrook Seminary in 1 8 3 1 .

Earlier, it

had reigned over the Portland City Hall signifying loyalty, honesty, fairplay, and courtesy.

When

a

new

city

building

was

erected, the tower was given to the then recently constructed Alumni Hall, at the school.

The Tower, for which the yearbook is named, houses the bell which beckons the students to Convocation Services.

We're in our n e w l y - p a i n t e d Lounge. The time to leave is fast app r o a c h i n g . O h , w e knew it was c o m i n g , but w e didn't expect it to a r r i v e so fast.

We've done w e l l this year. Our "Dutch G i r l " snow sculpture received honorable mention at Winter C a r n i v a l . Our basketeers copped the Intram u r a l Basketball Tourney C h a m p i o n s h i p . A n d our a n n u a l St. Patrick's Day Dance — "Shamrock S h a g " — was a smashing success.

We've had influential members, too. Dottie Glovsky edited the Tower. Judy G u l i a n was chosen a member of the Queen's Court, a n d also served as President of the W . A . A . Barbara Dunn d i d a top-notch job of g u i d i n g us — w i t h able assists f r o m Jeannine C o u i l l a r d , M a r i l y n Blake, a n d Gloria Jensen. M a r y Jane Thomas, M e r e d i t h Plaisted, a n d Judy G u l i a n w e r e standouts in sports. Jeannine C o u i l l a r d represented us w e l l at Student Council. Once upon a time there was a house named Deering, inhabited by twentyeight girls, each possessing a versatile art for happiness. Each i n d i v i d u a l contributed her share: Millie's w i t t y improvisations; Prissy's hearty song-fests; Marty's sentimental " A l l A l o n e " ; President Patty's patience; Bev's chuckle; Joanie's cow girl crooning; Dr. Mahoney's hospital; Jan's clever a r t w o r k ; and of course their mascot, Freddie.

They w o n a plaque for their Halloween skit. One of them — Chambie — was C a r n i v a l Queen, and she a l w a y s kept the house full of fresh air. There were skis, there w e r e crutches. There w e r e m a n y laughs and a f e w tears. They had a w o n d e r f u l housemother — Mrs. Cushman — to guide them.

Their four waitresses — Judy, Betty, Joanie, and Jean — f a i t h f u l l y reported the meals in advance. Two newcomers — Joan M e g q u i e r a n d Pat Smith — entered the f o l d . Sally held the purse strings a n d Collie w r o t e the f a m i l y avtivities.

Tede lived for her skiing weekends a n d Lester practiced " O p e r a . " Ginny and A n n w e r e the dramaticists. Randy's "Chew Tobacco Rag" w i l l a l w a y s live in their hearts. A skating star was theirs w i t h A n n i e C , w h i l e Annie B. shone in hockey.

Jan Hyde vied w i t h Tula, the chief of the M i d n i g h t Raiders, for best laughter.

Their Cha-Cha was voted "Miss N i a g a r a , '55".

N o w this f a m o u s t w e n t y - e i g h t has separated, but only g e o g r a p h i c a l l y . They w i l l a l w a y s remain a close f a m i l y .

Few in number we may be — but fun and good times we've had!

Winter Carnival proved a milestone for us. Our elaborate "Swedish Glassblower" was judged winner in the snow sculpture competition. It's been truly wonderful having Inai with us this year. We hope she's enjoyed it as much as we have. Hope joined us in February, but we've more than made up for lost time. Sonie, Kathy, and Ollie prefer college men, while Rosie, Val, and Gail argue for servicemen. Ah, well! Each to her own. Our major problem was how to get the seniors to the phone without having to climb another flight.

Judy Theobald, our Student Council representative, has served us well. While JD Stephie Carter has exemplified the Westbrook girl. To our House Officers — Judy Theobald, President; Rachel Mastrati, Vice President; June Altieri, Sec.-Treasurer; and Marcia Barnes, Social Chairman — go a hearty "Well-done!"

The Junior Deans are an appointed group of intermediaries between Faculty and students. They work, with Dean Hobson as their advisor, to stimulate the enthusiasm which is a part of every good college. Looked to for example of the qualities which designated them as Junior Deans, these girls maintain the high standards of the Westbrook W a y .

The Jay-Dees, aside from acting in advisory capacities, also serve as guides to visitors of the college.

During 1954-55, this honorary organization helped throughout freshman orientation week, and conducted the annual Candlelight Service â&#x20AC;&#x201D; marking the entry of the freshman class into the Westbrook family. The Jay-Dees also sponsored a series of foreign films, the purpose of which was to raise money for the furniture fund.

During 1954-55, the Student Council has been an active organization, working on constitution revisions and similar duties.

Among the activities sponsored by the Council was a highly successful Student-Faculty Auction, the proceeds of which went toward the building of a bus shelter on Stevens Avenue. The Council also aided the I.R.C. in planning its annual High School Forum.

Student Council officers were Sabra Harriman, President; Virginia Richards, Vice-President and Treasurer; and Judith Theobald, Secretary.

Council members feel that their year in office has been both helpful and profitable to the students.

Monthly news of campus activity was compiled by the Journalism students, and the M a r g r a y was again successful as the campus newspaper.

This year the M a r g r a y promoted the Blue Stocking Contest, and published the winning essay, short story, and poem.

For the first time in the history of the school paper, the advertising manager and her assistant were paid monthly, on a percentage basis of ads received.

The M a r g r a y Staff extends its appreciation to the Administration, Faculty, and student body for their co-operation throughout the year. A special THANKS goes to Mr. Gridley for his untiring efforts in making the M a r g r a y a success.

The Science Club started off its 1954-55 season with a new set of officers — Janice Jones, President; Nancy Lewis, Vice-President; Ellie Keating, Secretary; and Patricia Sarrau, Treasurer.

Throughout the year, the club has had a well-planned program of activities. Among these were lectures, films, and guest appearances of outstanding personalities in the medical field.

In April, Science Club members went on their annual trip to the Harvard Medical Museum in Boston. The biggest event of the year was the annual Science Fair held during M a y Weekend. At this time, all students enrolled in science subjects exhibited projects displaying their skill in the science field.

The club's able advisors hAr. Hooghkirk, Mr. Gordon, and Miss Littlefield have done much in furthering the club's activities, and in making the past season such an enjoyable one.

The Retailing Club, open in the retailing field, offers a a knowledge and an interest shows, demonstrations, and in the field.

The annual fashion show, a major project of the club, was held in October. Student models displayed fall and winter styles before a background of colorful autumn leaves.

The members of S.R.A. look with pride on their 1954-55 accomplishments. They procured new hymn books for the Convocation Services, and engaged interesting speakers of different denominations. They provided for evening grace before dinner, and held enlightening periodical Coffee Pot discussions.

In the fall, they attended a religious conference weekend at the University of Maine. A dance was held in April to earn funds for new library books.

A Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish leader spoke to the school during Religious Emphasis Week â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a week in which the S.R.A. attempts to bring the individual student closer to her own beliefs, while at the same time giving her a clearer understanding of the religions of others.

The S.R.A. extends its appreciation and thanks to Mrs. Howes for the counsel and guidance she has given.

In early fall, the IRC successfully sponsored its annual dance. It also planned the Faculty-student basketball tussle in which the Faculty emerged triumphant. Periodical Coffee-Pot discussions, held jointly with SRA, proved both interesting and informative.

The club's main project was the Second Annual High School Forum held March 12th. Students from the greater Portland area attended and participated as delegates. The keynote speaker was the Reverend Benjamin Nunez, Permanent Representative from Costa Rica, to the United Nations.

The Masque a n d Candle has enjoyed another successful a n d thrillpacked season. In N o v e m b e r , the club collaborated w i t h Portland Junior College in presenting Thornton Wilder's " O u r T o w n . " The d a n c e - j a m boree, "Harvest M o o n , " w a s another N o v e m b e r hit. December w a s h i g h lighted by the t r a d i t i o n a l Christmas Pageant â&#x20AC;&#x201D; "The York N a t i v i t y . " In February, club members heard a n interesting a n d e n l i g h t e n i n g talk on the French Provincial Theater. M r . Daniel Dacey spoke f r o m first h a n d experiences.

Costuming, b l o c k i n g , a n d l i g h t i n g w e r e b r o u g h t to a professional level by club members, under the direction a n d leadership of Miss M a r y Lee H a u g u m , Masque a n d Candle advisor. Miss H a u g u m directed all plays including the riotous Faculty Follies. To her, goes much a p p r e c i a tion for the high s t a n d a r d she has m a i n t a i n e d , a n d the inspiration and guidance she has g i v e n .

The Glee Club, supervised by Mr. Marshall Bryant, and accompanied by Miss Pasqualina Caputi, sang its w a y through a pleasant and successful 1954-55 season. Club membership as well as enthusiasm increased, with approximately seventy girls singing in unison.

The Glee Club held a joint concert with the Bowdoin Glee Club, joined with various Portland musical groups and choruses in singing Handel's "Messiah" at the Portland City Hall, sang Christmas hymns and carols at the Kiwanis Club, appeared before the Lions Club, sang at the University of New Hampshire, and entertained at various school functions during M a y Weekend.

The Outing Club Council, governing board of the Outing Club, consists of eight active seniors.

Weekends at the f a r m , skiing, skating, snowshoeing, tobogganing trips, mountain-climbing jaunts, and other sporting events sponsored by the Outing Club are planned by theCouncil. Council members serve as publicity chairmen for trips and serve as trip leaders.

A major project of the club this year was its teaming up with the W.A.A. to sponsor Winter Carnival Weekend. The Outing Club Council also took charge of the spring canoe trip.

In early autumn and on through the winter and spring, Riding Club members have enjoyed trail rides in the beautiful woods surrounding Tomlinson's Riding Stables.

The Horse Show held during M a y Weekend was the highlight of the year. The April dance was another memorable event.
