H o u g h t o n H a l l — the c o - o p d o r m ! It sounds harmless e n o u g h , doesn't it? Let's try a close up. Into this little factory in September came a c o n g r e g a t i o n of the w o r l d ' s worst cooks, the school's most confused housekeepers, a n d the State's clumsiest dishwashers. Life w a s a b a t t l e for m a n y months as smoke a n d sparks w a n d e r e d from the kitchen to the nostrils of the little factory workers, w a r n i n g them of a n o t h e r sooty m e a l . But with the a p p r o a c h of Christmas came a glimmer of h o p e . The house w o r e a strange new polish a n d its occupants lost their w a s t e d look for one of bulbous contentment. The dishes' f a t a l i t y rate d w i n d l e d s o m e w h a t as the crews l e a r n e d to p y r a m i d their dish stacks in e l e g a n t formations. W i t h the N e w Y e a r came the mice raids leaving screams of terror rocking the house from morning till night. Following the mice raids came other raids, but our w o m e n never f a l t e r e d . There w a s no neglect of our physical condition. Every night brought mighty mattress wars a n d jitterbug orgies. It w a s a y e a r of accomplishment, a n d to condense a w o n d e r f u l e x p e r i e n c e , it was a y e a r of g r o w t h of complete friendship a n d f u n .

A new smoker rug was added to our smoker by our housemothers, along wrth a poem ending, "So here's a token of our affection, Selected after due reflection. To beautify your smoking habit With love from Dewey, Cushman, Babbott." At Carnival, the Hersey Cinderella won first place, and we finally saw 12:00 p.m. on the outside! During the year, we've had so many laughs . . . remember Millie Wenn and her multi-colored unmentionables; also her version of Jerry Lewis . . . when Mary Jane, Sally W i g g i n , Steph Carter, and Pris Wheeler found some doughnuts in the cafe with a note from Bowdoin . . . our "Egg Diets" . , . and many, many more. It's agreed we've had a happy and prosperous Westbrook Year!

The Junior D e a n s , a n h o n o r a r y o r g a n i z a t i o n of fifteen senior girls, w o r k closely with D e a n Hobson a n d D e a n Flavin to p r o m o t e the W e s t b r o o k W a y . A m o n g the specific duties the J a y - D e e s assume is t h a t of serving as junior advisors, linking the student b o d y a n d the a d m i n i s t r a t i o n . G u i d i n g visitors a r o u n d the campus is also a function of the J a y - D e e s . This y e a r , as is t r a d i t i o n a l , the J a y - D e e s conducted the C a n d l e l i g h t Service, h e l d e a r l y in the f a l l . This service is the climax to freshman o r i e n t a t i o n , with each JayDee's c a n d l e , a n d finally the candles of the entire student b o d y , symbolizing the qualities of the W e s t b r o o k G i r l . A n i n f o r m a l meeting of present a n d previous J a y - D e e s w a s held this y e a r during W i n t e r C a r n i v a l , a n d it is h o p e d that this meeting will be continued in future years. The f u n d - r a i s i n g project, to supplement the furniture f u n d , is a n o t h e r J a y - D e e activity. During M a y W e e k e n d , the J a y - D e e s conduct the T a p p i n g C e r e m o n y , a t which time the future Junior Deans a r e officially m a d e k n o w n . The Masque and Candle started off the year by changing their point system to enable more girls to earn the coveted key in two years. In the early f a l l the Club had an awards dinner at the Eastland Hotel to give keys to those girls already having accumulated sufficient points. The Club sincerely hopes that the dinner will become a bi-annual affair at Westbrook. In November the Club helped Miss Haugum, Miss Caputi, and Mr. Macfarlan produce the American Muse, a historical narrative, undertoned by symphonic music, and interpreted through modern dance. It was the first production of its kind at Westbrook and proved a huge success. "The Babe At The I n n " was the Christmas play. In the spring another play was put on and the Club held a second awards banquet for those girls who had earned their keys during the school year. Officers of the 1954 Masque and Candle were President, Barbara Haynes; VicePresident, Cynthia Miller; Treasurer, Priscilla W a r d ; Executive Secretary, Pat Libby; and Recording Secretary, Florence Robertson. Miss Haugum, a new addition to the Westbrook faculty and head of the Speech department, was our advisor. Her constant pep and new ideas proved vitally stimulating throughout the year.

W e w e r e in c h a r g e of p l a n n i n g C o n v o c a t i o n services a n d the G r a c e a t e v e n i n g meals. A f e w of our members a t t e n d e d a religious conference in Massachusetts. O n e of the year's highlights w a s Religious Emphasis W e e k held in A p r i l . W e feel t h a t one of the best w a y s to o b t a i n a n u n d e r s t a n d i n g a n d a respect for the f a i t h of others is to hear from qualified persons just w h a t their g r o u p believes. W e e x t e n d our a p p r e c i a t i o n to Miss Flavin a n d Miss D e w e y for their assistance as advisors a n d to the staff of officers.

In September the IRC membership g r e w to a n all time high. M r . M a c f a r l a n a n d Miss C a p u t i w e r e elected as advisors. The IRC sponsored the year's first faculty vs. students b a s k e t b a l l g a m e — e n d i n g in a tie. Early in the Fall, the IRC rejoined the C a r n e g i e F o u n d a t i o n , which once a g a i n affiliated the W e s t b r o o k IRC with the n a t i o n a l o r g a n i z a t i o n . Coffee Pot discussions w e r e held jointly with the SRA throughout the y e a r . " N o r t h S t a r " — a f u l l - l e n g t h movie — w a s shown to raise money for the a d o p t i o n of a w a r o r p h a n . The a n n u a l d a n c e w a s held in M a r c h with proceeds being sent to the w a r orphan fund. The main project of the y e a r was the High School Forum held in A p r i l . The IRC was h o n o r e d in having as key speaker, C o l o n e l Ben. C. Limb, the p e r m a n e n t r e p r e sentative to the United N a t i o n s from the Republic of K o r e a . Students from the surrounding high schools a n d professors from the M a i n e colleges p a r t i c i p a t i n g in the Forum m a d e it the success it w a s . This y e a r has b e e n a milestone in the history of the IRC. The Retailing Club is a n o r g a n i z a t i o n comprised of all retailing students a n d a n y other girls w h o a r e interested in the field of r e t a i l i n g . Its purpose is to introduce to the student outstanding p e o p l e a n d careers in this particular field, a n d to promote the k n o w l e d g e a n d interest in r e t a i l i n g . The f a l l project of the club w a s their presentation of a fashion show which f e a t u r e d some girls as models, a n d others as " w a r d r o b e h a n d s . " The Retailing D a n c e in A p r i l t e r m i n a t e d the activities of the club for the y e a r . The Margray staff has gained invaluable experience this year by being allowed to paste up, cut up, proof read, and generally take care of their own paper. Of course, we have made our share of boners but we thank Mr. Gridley for giving us the opportunity to really get into some newspaper work. With the all round co-operation of the entire Margray staff, we were able to increase to monthly publications. With these additional issues we could include more current news, variety of pictures, and the results of numerous polls taken on campus. The Margray staff sincerely thanks the faculty and students for their helpful criticism and praise during the year, for it is only through this that we can improve our paper.

This y e a r the Student Council has b e e n w o r k i n g under a revised constitution. The Council has assisted in the o r g a n i z a t i o n of the picture b o o k l e t which is designed to advertise the W e s t b r o o k W a y . The Student Council sent representatives to a t t e n d the N e w E n g l a n d Student G o v e r n m e n t conference held a t C o l b y Junior C o l l e g e in M a r c h . Seminars w e r e held discussing honor systems a n d problems concerning student g o v e r n m e n t .
