FRESHMAN HISTORY " M o m , did I get any mail t o d a y ? " , was m y urgent cry for about a m o n t h last spring. It wasn't a letter from m y man I wanted either—it was news as to m y acceptance to Westbrook Junior College. Finally it came—I was in and very happy. I guess it's a woman's privilege to make plans way ahead of time. If so it's a good thing I'm a woman because I practically had m y t r u n k all packed and it was only April. The summer sort of crawled along. All m y thoughts were on the coming fall and college. Those last weeks in August were p r e t t y hectic. T h i n k i n g back I remember both pleasant things, like buying new clothes and unpleasant things like sewing on name tapes. It's funny how you change. I was so excited about going away to school, b u t on the other hand, as September 18th drew nearer, home seemed even more wonderful. The first day here things happened I'll never forget — driving to Westbrook looking for the college and

not finding it there — the campus — cars all around the circle — girls, girls and more girls — parents saying goodbye, t r y i n g to look happy, feeling very sad — girls t r y i n g to act old — feeling very y o u n g , sort of confused and if like me, sort of wishing t h a t this was just a visit. T h e first day passed and so did the tears. Well, maybe the tears lingered a little longer than the first day. A n y w a y , I was a Freshman. M y roommate was swell — t h a t helped a lot. W e had a chapel meeting t h a t first night, everyone was very helpful.

t h a t I remember " T u r k e y " — the " W e s t b r o o k wiggle"—a lot of fun and being very thankful for m y wonderful big sister. I made a promise to myself then and there t h a t next year I'd t r y to be as nice. O u r big sister's gave us a p a r t y — it was fun. I remember the first dance out at Casco. W h a t I liked best was the boatride. Thanksgiving came along about here — the dining room looked very nice and dinner was delicious. W e were really in the swing of things, or at least we t h o u g h t we were, by the time Xmas Pageant came along and the caroling. It was beautiful out the night before we left for vacation. I remember bright stars, the Xmas tree, the far distant voices coming nearer—it made me feel good, inside. After the caroling we had our Xmas p a r t y , it was a big success! I m u s t n ' t leave out the Christmas Ball, it too was a success and loads of fun. Vacation was long—four weeks of packed in fun for everyone. H o w the time flew! W e came back to school ready to accomplish things b u t it was rather hard to settle down at first. Carnival weekend came along toward the last of F e b r u a r y — w h a t a weekend! ! I remember the F u n n y Paper Follies—how p r e t t y the queen and her court looked—the ski boot dance—Saturday at the riding school—best of all was the Carnival Ball. T i m e went even faster until the interhouse sing and Spring vacation. T h e rest of the year was spent in the task of finishing
up. There was more fun with the Freshman weekend and the C o t t o n
Ball. Studying for exams—saying goodbye to the Seniors who were busy preparing for graduation, and getting ready to leave ourselves, all happened at once. It's hard to think t h a t the Seniors, the gals w h o were so nice to us when we most needed assurance, w o n ' t be here next year. T h e y will come back and see us, though, we hope! So, here's to one of the most wonderful years in m y life. N e x t year will be nice, b u t nothing could be more fun than being a Freshman at Westbrook Junior.

Student Council The Student Council, the campus group which represents student opinion was increased this year from five to eight members:
Alice Smith, chairman;
Louanna Gardner, Lois Wanecek, Sally Reed, Beverly Cushing, and three Freshmen, Margaret St. John, Mildred Holbrooke, and Marjorie Belcher. The group has been very active in promoting interest in the welfare of the college. Its greatest project has been the editing of a Westbrook Junior College handbook to be issued to the incoming Freshmen and next year's Seniors. O t h e r projects have been the establishment in part of an honor system, a schedule for the election of club and class officers, and a system for more efficient service in the caf.

W. J. C News O u r headaches this year were no greater than usual. W e started o u t with the best of intentions to p u t out an issue a m o n t h b u t succeeded in publishing only six issues, three of which were supplements . . . " H u m a n interest stories, feature storiesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;go out and get t h e m , " challenged Mr. Bicknell. We had a larger paper this year than ever before, with larger headlines and more pictures . . . W e even experimented with leaving the gossip column out and d i d n ' t lose our heads. Maybe we started something which will last. O u r editorial policy, while not continuously vigorous, was strong enough to inspire some relaxation on student restrictions. Merchandising Club A club t h a t at last is beginning to come into its o w n this year u n d e r the able direction of Mrs. Coleman Bicknell, is the Merchandising C l u b . Meetings were held weekly in Deering House Smoker, where the girls learned m u c h about style m a k e - u p and color h a r m o n y , pertaining to their own particular types. The highlight of the year was a fashion show presented in conjunction with Filene's. Members of the club served as models. Officers of the club were: President, Maxine Macmillan; Secretary-Treasurer, Jean Berger.
Library Club A new club on the campus this year was the Library C l u b , under the guidance of Miss Doe, school librarian. Meetings were held at the beginning of each m o n t h , w i t h a guest speaker attending each meeting. Guest at their first meeting was Miss Bean who reviewed and discussed several of the newest best sellers for the group. A t a meeting held in Deering Smoker, guest of the club was head librarian of the Portland Public Library, who spoke on the past history of the library and showed parts of valuable collections of books. A t another meeting held in Bell House Smoker, the campus poets read several of their poems to the group. Those invited were Miss Marge Y o u n g , Sally Reed, and A n n e Peirce. Xjterary Contest Winners FIRST PLACE ALONE? H a v e you ever been told you're crazy because you like to sit alone and t h i n k ? I have—I d i d n ' t let it bother me too m u c h until lately, n o w I ' m beginn i n g to wonder, so hear m y s t o r y — w h a t do you think? I should say it was about e i g h t - t h i r t y when Rae came bouncing into the house, her cheeks aflame. "Guess w h a t ? " she said, breathlessly. T h e n not waiting for me to answer, she added, "Steve's asked me to the p r o m ! Isn't t h a t just simply super?" I admitted t h a t it was, not because I t h o u g h t so; b u t if I d i d n ' t say it, she'd keep after me until I said something. You see, I grew up with Rae, so there is n o t h i n g you can tell me about her t h a t I d o n ' t already know. She is the china doll type, seemingly p u t on this earth to be courted by the best looking boys in the class. She is the one with the heavy date problems, while I am still looking for—. "Let's go skating," Rae said, picking up m y skates. I agreed, although I can't skate very well. I t h o u g h t that possibly Steve might be there. If t h a t was the case, Rae would not bother with me. I would be happy. It had started to snow a little when we got out to the street — a light, feathery snow. C o m i n g towards us was a tall, thin boy w h o m I recognized to be Steve. Rae looked at me questioningly. I told her to go on. Well, of course she w e n t ; t h a t would be Rae. I made u p m y mind then and there t h a t I wasn't going skating — alone, anyway. So, green with envy and black with rage, I stumbled into the bright lights and gay laughter of the Stone Fort, a place where all the kids go to eat. I sat alone, still angry at Rae. I told myself that some day " h e " would come. While I was waiting for m y order, I saw someone had stopped by m y table. Looking up, I met the gaze of one of the best looking boys I have ever seen. I imagine t h a t I stared at the poor fellow because he got a little red around the ears. T h e n he spoke: " D o you mind if I sit here?" I said t h a t I d i d n ' t care. I guess t h a t he was as embarrassed as I because it was a few minutes before either of us spoke. T h e n I t h i n k we started talking about the weather or some such silly subject. But I k n o w t h a t it was while he was talking t h a t I noticed the small ragged scar near his left temple. Before, I had been too interested in his brown curly hair and big brown eyes to see anyt h i n g else. I commented on the scar and remarked on w h a t a close call it must have been. H e looked awfully strange for a second, then grinned and said, " T o o close." I would have asked w h a t he meant, b u t he offered no further information so I t h o u g h t it best to keep quiet (which I succeeded in doing for once in m y life). H e looked at his watch, gasped, and then asked if he could walk me home. N a t u r a l l y I accepted and we started.

T h e snow had grown heavier, and the wind was blowing a terrific gale. As we rounded the corner by the d r u g store, we b u m p e d into Rae and Steve, just r e t u r n i n g from the rink, and she asked me w h a t in the world I was talking about. I looked first at her, then at the silent boy beside me. I told her t h a t I had been talking to â&#x20AC;&#x201D; I looked at him and laughed. I d i d n ' t even k n o w his name. H e supplied it for me and I t u r n e d to Rae. I had been talking to Neil Curtis until she came u p . I can't describe the look on her face, or Steve's either, b u t they both staredâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;stared at me as t h o u g h I had done some fantastic thing. T h e n Steve broke the awed silence w i t h : " W h a t in the name of all that's good and great are you talking about? I always t h o u g h t you were n u t s , b u t n o w I guess I have proof! O f all the crazy things I've ever heard, this is the craziest!" I for one d i d n ' t k n o w w h a t he was spouting about, b u t Neil looked rather angry and d i d n ' t say a single word until they had left. I d o n ' t remember w h a t happened next, b u t I soon found myself at m y front door. It was ten o'clock by t h a t time. I k n o w because I asked h i m to come in, and he said he couldn't, for he was going to move and had to get some things ready. W h e n I asked him where he was moving, he gave me t h a t strange smile, and said, " P a c k a r d Street." H e then said goodnight, and left me standing in the snow to watch his solitary figure disappear into the dark. I had just t u r n e d to go into the house, when I heard Rae's voice; she shouted quite excited. She grabbed me as she ran past our walk and yelled, " C ' m o n ! T h e y say there's been an accident d o w n at the rink! Somebody's drowned or h u r t or something!" I d i d n ' t w a n t to go b u t she dragged me after her, all the while keeping up a steady stream of chatter. I protested, b u t she silenced me by saying, " D o n ' t you w a n t to see who's h u r t ? It m a y be a friend of ours, and just t h i n k h o w angry he would be if we d i d n ' t go to see him when he was d r o w n e d . " Again I t h o u g h t to myself that we d i d n ' t have any c o m m o n friends, and even if we did I w o u l d n ' t w a n t to see them if they were dead, or something. I d i d n ' t say this to Rae, b u t instead I asked her how she found out about the accident. She said t h a t as Steve was walking her home, they came upon her father, w h o was going d o w n to the rink to take her home if she h a d n ' t been the one who had fallen in. W h e n we got to Drake's Skating Rink, quite a m o b had gathered at the east end of the pond. I was hauled d o w n there, against m y better j u d g m e n t , to see w h o it was. " I t " proved to be a boy about t w e n t y years of age, nearly six feet, with a cap of b r o w n curly hair. H e seemed very familiar to me as he lay there so still and white. I looked at him for the second time, and, as I searched m y mind groping for some recognition, I saw a small, b u t deep, ragged hole near his left temple. I stared, unable to tear m y eyes from t h a t unearthly sight. I think t h a t I screamed or made some sort of a sound because Rae t u r n e d and looked at me. She says t h a t she spoke to me, and I d i d n ' t pay any attention to her. She also said t h a t she had to shake me before I would look away from him. But believe me, I was so stunned when I saw him I scarcely knew w h a t I was doing. Finally, I came to and asked Rae w h a t time it was. T o m y surprise it was only ten past ten. Neil never could have reached the rink, p u t on his skates,

and skated out to where he was now—all in ten minutes! T r y i n g to clear m y poor befuddled mind, I left Rae and started back to the lodge. There I found the caretaker sitting alone by the fireplace. I asked h i m about w h a t time Neil had fallen t h r o u g h the ice. T h e old m a n consulted his watch and answered, " O h , I'd say about nine-fifteen. Y o u see, for a while we d i d n ' t k n o w t h a t he had fallen i n ; when we did find out, we had to send for the fire t r u c k . T h e ice was so thin nobody could get h i m out. H e must have hit his head 'cause he never came u p . " I told him of the w o u n d on Neil's head, b u t d i d n ' t give his name because I had begun t o wonder w h a t had happened to me. A t nine-fifteen the boy who had n o w said good-bye to life had been with me—or so I thought. I thanked the m a n and went on m y way. I t h o u g h t about the things we had said earlier in the evening. O n e statement t h a t I had made came to m y mind. I remembered t h a t when I had remarked about the scar on his head, he had just answered, " T o o close," and h a d n ' t said any more about it. H e also had said t h a t he was going to move to — Packard Street, where they are making the new cemetery! I went in search of Rae to ask her if she remembered seeing me b y the drug store. She did and at the time t h o u g h t t h a t I was playing a joke on them because I had been alone. N o w I realized t h a t I had been alone although I h a d n ' t k n o w n it at the time. After I left Rae, I continued on m y w a y home, still t h i n k i n g — o r t r y i n g to think. I could almost swear t h a t from nine-fifteen to ten, Neil had been with me. Maybe I had been dreaming, b u t it's n o t very often you dream u p a g u y like Neil Curtis—a guy you've never seen before. JANICE BUTTERFIELD.
