170 girls formed a new freshman class at Westbrook

The first semester of college life anywhere is typified by an adjustment to new surroundings and different people. Realizing this from the first, we adjusted with a will â&#x20AC;&#x201D; from Doctor Proctor's famed Steak Roast 'til midyears.

W i t h that semester in the past, and its experiences as axioms for the last half of the year, we were ready for whatever might be ahead. W e worked hard and played well, and took whatever opportunities came our way. But with all our interest in our own affairs, we combined a healthy curiosity concerning the movements of the class ahead of us. V/e observed the charm and dignity of its functions and the cooperative spirit manifest in all its activities. Interwoven through all this was some underlying factor which we now realize was the subtle quality of the realization of a goal, and the way in which to achieve it in a manner most beneficial to each individual.

By June all of these things were clear to us, and fixed in our minds was the determination to carry through the coming year in a manner worthy of praise and admiration.

These ideals were put to use early in September this year, and we have made them the basis for all we have done. The Day Students' Party gave us our first opportunity to test the workability of the wisdom engraved upon our new page. The fun we had was most certainly shared by the freshmen and proved the worthiness of our goals.

Early in the year we chose Betty Jenkins to carry out the high standards set up by Alice Stevens as class president the year before. Certainly there remains no doubt of the fact that each has given her best in grace and dignity and wisdom.

The informal fall dance was soon followed by the Christmas Ball, sponsored by "The Tower," and was in everv way indicative of the fun-loving spirit characteristic of the class.

W e have the honor of possessing the Carnival Queen of both years in our class.

This vear Louise Thibodeau took the place so graciously filled by Kit Chambers last year. The custom of crowning the Queen at the Carnival Cotillion was sponsored by the

Riding Club.

March was distinguished by the three-act play, " M o o r Born," which was the soring Production of the Dramatic Club. It was also the' month during which the choir made its first tour. The Dartmouth College Varsity Glee Club was so impressed by our fine work in a concert of last year that they wished to sing with us again; and we were invited to Hanover to sing in their annual Palm Sunday Concert. fhe Spring Recess served its purpose in reawakening everyone to duties and opportunities. Also in April came the annual Glee Club Concert; this year with the Williams College Glee Club.

Last year's May Pageant will long be remembered for its beautiful portrayal of "Cinderella." This year's production is to be given in honor of the lovely May Queen (whose identity is yet a secret). Also there has been some change made in the Queen's Procession. Girls representing the virtues of Love, Honor, Wisdom, and Friendship, and the Spirits of both classes have been added to lend beauty and charm to the following of the Queen.

W i t h exams behind us, we will be able to enjoy freely to the utmost Commencement Week and its many activities.

FRESHMEN ARE ACTIVE IN AFFAIRS USTIFIED are these remarks concerning the class of 1941. W i t h something akin to pride we are delighted to remark that the class combines beauty, vitality/ ability, and versatility. These 184 students have branched out in all directions. Becoming immediately active, a group of freshmen served on committees for the Day-Students' Party last October.

The following month we discovered very fine dramatic talent in Frances MoyeO Inez Phillips, Irene Hill, Wilma Parker, Elinore Meserve, Margaret Crozier, and Norma Tornquist who acted in the Dramatic Club's three one-act plays. Carolyn Kidder, Shirley Deane, Beverly Johnson, Jeanne Lowell, and Jane Hickox were the chairmen of committees for the production. Later on in the year, Irene Hill, Wilma Parker, and Helen Hastings further proved their acting ability by taking part in the Dramatic Club production of " M o o r Born." During the Christmas activities, the freshmen again demonstrated their remarkable zest for organization by singing in the College Choir for the Christmas vespers and by serving on the committees for parties, Betty. Whitney/ Shirley Cummings, Virginia Oliver, Phyllis Eisher, Constance Hirst, and Beverly Tupp e r Two freshmen, Cynthia Picken, and Mary Terrio, helped to inaugurate the house-dance5 as an annual event on Westbrook's social calendar.

On February I Oth, the class as a whole, held a snow party. Helping to make the affair a success were: Virginia Roberts, Elinor Crowell, Bernice Cleaves, Betty Ross, and Evelyn Monroe. For one of the biggest events of the year, the Winter Carnival and Cotillion, Westbrook proved its trust in the executive ability and talent of the class by having freshmen work on all the committees for the affair. Literary figures have been found in Janet Cohen, Phyllis Elfman, Florence Harrington, Eleanor O'Brien, and Barbara Thomas, who were on the editorial staff of the popular "Westbrook Junior Collcg e News."

The spring activities also were helped to be made successful by the participation of our freshmen. A fashion show was presented by the Secretarial and Dramatic Clubs with Nancy Pierce, Nancy Randall, Wilma Parker, and Barbara Corrigan making very attractive models. The annual May Pageant saw Wilma Parker portraying the Spirit 째f the Freshman Class, and Anna Sargent and Viola Campagna were very pretty flower Sirls.

The various clubs, t o o , have discovered the potentialities of our freshmen since Virginia Stockman was elected treasurer of the Outing Club, Ann Sherman and Charlotte Parker were elected vice-president and secretary, respectively, of the Riding Club; and Ann Sargent was voted vice-president; Constance Coady, secretary; and Marie Booth, treasurer of the Secretarial Club. Class officers were elected for each semester. Serving on the first group were: Anna Sargent, president; Grace Libby, dce-president; Jeanne Lowell, secretary; Elinore Meserve and Charlotte Parker, treasurers; Nancy Randall and Isabelle Gunn, Student Council; and Jane Hickox, finance chairman. The officers for the second semester were: Wilma Parker, president; Janice Parker, vice-president; Jeanne Lowell, secretary; Anne Rowse and Phyllis Fisher, treasurers; Barbara Douglass and Shirley Cummings, social chairmen; and Carolyn Kidder d nd Barbara Thomas, finance chairmen.

But the scholastic side has not been neglected for all these social activities. Very Well represented on the honor roll were these freshmen for the first semester, Anita Heusser, Betty Johnson, Phyllis Lindgren, Hope Stanley, and Priscilla Trubey who r eceived high honors. Nancy Parker, Antoinette Casavola, Priscilla Coady, Elinor Crowell, Carolyn Kidder, Barbara Pead, and Ruth Timson received honors.

Westbrook Junior College is very proud of her freshmen class, knowing full well 't will carry on her traditions in the best possible manner.

RIDING CLUB DOUBLES MEMBERSHIP THIS YEAR

COHE Wanakea Riding Club is one of Westbrook Junior College's growing and best supported organizations.

Members are proud to say that the club roll

has more than doubled in members this year. They are also proud of the enthusiasm which has done much to further the club's purposes: the promotion of good fellowship, good sportsmanship, and good horsemanship.

Activities began in the fall with the election of officers, namely: president, Bettie Fales; vice-president, Ann Sherman; secretary, Charlotte Parker; treasurer, Madeline Philbrick; chairman, executive committee, Jane Gray.

Meetings were held once a

month during the winter and twice a month during the spring. The annual February Winter Carnival and following Cotillion were highly successful, the proceeds being used to buy a movie for the club.

Activities for the rest of the year included a trail ride in May. Activities ended with the spring Horse Show, June 7th.

For these shows there were two drill teams of eight riders each. Each member of the first team received one of the Proctor Medals at Commencement.

A t the same

time, the Tomiinson Award was presented. Within the club itself, there are six emblems given for riders, shoe, for ability to ride a walk and trot; spur, for walk, trot, and canter; crest, for general proficiency in all these gaits; bar, for jumping; whip, for driving; and circle, for teaching.

A large portion of the success of this year's activities is due to " M o m " and " P o p " Tomiinson, who are symbolic of the spirit of warmth and welcome which members try to keep in the club.

purpose of the Westbrook Junior College Outing Club is to foster

an interest in wholesome outdoor activity. In the fall of the year there were a number of mountain trips, bicycling trips, and a week-end stay on Sebago Lake. During the winter, skiing trips and the Winter Carnival gave the members lively times. The spring ca'led forth hiking, picnics, and over-night camping trips.

newspaper contests, Westbrook Junior College staff members boast that they work on "one of the best college newspapers in the United States." The paper, organized last year, increased its staff membership 5 0 % , introduced new features, including collegiate cartoons, this year.

Like the Associated Press system, the " N e w s " has offices all over the campus.

Most of the reporters would rather get stories than eat or sleep. Hersey freshmen will adorn themselves with hairbows when Barbara Thomas suggests that she can use their picture. Day students for months have thought that the great news scoops came from Jean Murphy's cafeteria table. Goddard freshmen learned the first week of college that they must go to bed on time, not make too much noise, and give their news to Janet Cohen. W i t h Virginia Davidson in Houghton, Phyllis Elfman in Cressey, Mary Terrio in W h i t m a n , and Florence Harrington, Anne Foster, Eleanor O'Brien, Mora Jane Somers, Mary D. Riley, Shirley A . Among the trips this year for staff members and their friends was a visit to the Portland Press-Herald office. Miss Margaret Hecker is adviser for the news hounds.

MUSIC! LIGHTS! CURTAIN! vOHE Westbrook Junior College Dramatic Club opened its activities this fall under the capable direction of Miss Elizabeth Butterfield.

The purpose of the Dramatic Club is to give each girl interested a chance to develop her capabilities in any phase of the theater in which her interests lie.

November 22nd and 23rd, the Dramatic Club produced three one-act plays: "Chimney Corner," "Yeller Squares," and " W h i t e Iris." These plays were coached by Mr. Harriman Jones, Miss Jean Proctor, and Miss Elizabeth Butterfield.

STUDENT COUNCIL AIDS HOUSE PRESIDENTS i-oATE in November of 1939, the election of our Student Council took place. The 3irls elected to represent the council are: Mary Meserve, '40, Barbara Lewando, '40, Alice Stevens, ' 4 1 , and Nancy Randall, '41.

Our project of the year has been that of aiding the House Presidents at our various social functions. The council proposed a plan, under the direction of its faculty adviser, Dean Melville, whereby more of the students were able to enjoy our dances with escorts.

In May, the Council enjoyed dinner with Dean Melville at the Lafayette Hotel.

An informal business meeting was held at which time the Council discussed plans for the coming school year.

W e have enjoyed working together. Our one wish is to say simply and most sincerely, the very best of luck to the faculty, the Student Council and to the student body of 1940 and 1941.

vL/HF Secretarial Club, one of the largest organizations on the campus, has activities planned by the student officers, under the guidance of the secretarial department advisers, Miss Janet Smith/Miss Marjorie L. Bean, Miss Ruth E. Chandler, Miss Rebekah Joslin, Miss Dorothy G. Colman, and Miss Kathryn T. Fair.

GLEE CLUB HAS OUTSTANDING GROUP GdGHTY-SIX girls under the leadership of Mr. Rupert Neily formed the Westbrook Junior College Glee Club, this past year. Officers of the Glee Club and choir are: Elizabeth Jenkins, president; Ruth Clark, vice-president; Berenice Whipple, secretary and treasurer; Anna Flagg, manager; Miss Muriel Mason, accompanist.

The outstanding event of the year was the annual spring concert at the Hotel Eastland in Portland, April 20th, when the Glee Club gave a concert with the Williams College Glee Club. Prolonged applause by a capacity audience was accorded the well-balanced program in which the clubs excelled in musical ability, artistic interpretation, and quality of tone. The soloists of the evening were: Jeanette Quincannon, Grace Libby, and Ruth Clark, who sang a recitative, " W h o So Dwelleth," by Mr. Neily.

The last public appearance of the Glee Club was the Commencement Concert given at the College Chapel, June 9th. A varied program was presented, a part of which was a group of Mr. Neily's compositions sung by request.

WESTBROOK'S CHOIR SINGS AT D A R T M O U T H vOHE greatest honor received by Westbrook's Choir this year was an invitation to join the Dartmouth Varsity Glee Club in its annual Easter Vesper Service at Dartmouth College, March

17th.

Here Westbrook presented three songs: "Jesu

Dulcis Memoria," by Vittoria, a religious chorale; "Crucifixion," sung by Jeanette Quincannon, accompanied by the humming of the choir; Mr. Neily's own composition, "Just-a-Longing," and the Jewish Chorale, "Rachem," in which the group displayed its great volume and rich tonal quality. The two glee clubs combined to sing Part I! of Gounod's "Redemption."

The choir also sang a group of songs at a concert presented by the Westbrook Junior College Glee Club and the Williams College Glee Club, April 20th.

The group has the following excellent soloists to whom much credit for its success is due: Jeanette Quincannon, Grace Libby, Ruth Clark, Mary Jo Tetreau, and also Mary Dambrie and Marjorie Witherell, who received voice scholarships given by Mr. Neily. The choir had an excellent accompanist, Miss Muriel Mason.

Let the forest engulf you in surging waves

of silence; let it penetrate your mind and memory until there is nothing left but a vision of the soft fluff of a bluebird, a touch of damp earth, a lady slipper in the shadows like a soft rose on a green wand. In the Maine woods, there is a vibrant color of yellow gold, heavy and old. Look at brown tree trunks, old and gnarled, rhythmic and responsive, in their curving loveliness. This is spring gold.

Next, you must go to the sea. Feel the cold wind stream against you and feel the soft, gray sand sink into your shoes. That sand is colorful, for if you examine it closely, you will find particles of red and brown and gray. In this land of bleak cliffs and blue-washed skies, the ocean is pagan and revolting against man's influence. This sea has a will of its own.

You may hear this will expressed if you but

listen to its pounding roar against the cliffs along the shore. And when the odor of fresh paint drifts across from the sailboats in dry-dock together with

the music of busy hammers, you will experience another delightful sensation. Yes, this is spring gold.

As Maine puts forth her best attempts for all oT us who Qre her real people, there comes an excellent opportunity to become acquainted with her contrasts and lovely fulfillments. A n d through the haze of the world's hate and misery will come a picture of a land polished by the glow of winter and sleeping snows. Spring gold lies at the end of the rainbow, and one must travel far and hard before the treasure may be claimed. A n d yet there is a trail to the glorious reincarnation of beauty.

First, watch a lonely bush with one forlorn bud on it; cross an expanse of wind-whipped sand; step on moist earth and watch it bubble around your" feet; listen to the rustle of the soft south wind; seek a morning robin with sunlight on his back. All these will lead you to the final resting place of spring gold. A n d as you climb up by the crystal waterfall the sun's glory will fall down with the rushing water.

Then will you stand on the summit and survey the world of spring painted around your feet. Then will you know spring gold.
