Plans call for an enlarged lobby and reception room on the first floor of the hospital, with the 1 entrance on the Brighton avenue side of the institution.

Matched By Edith Potter Twenty years ago Miss Edith Potter got\ a call from Dr. Myron Ladd to fill in for three weeks duty at the Osteopathic Hospital o-f Maine. Next Thurspay the hospital, now located on Brighton Ave., will be 20 old, and Miss Potter is still on the staff.

With the exception of a short time away for private duty, Miss Potter has worked 11 of those 20 years for the ospital. Since the day she started with them on general nursing dl.\tY to this present day working in the pharmacy Miss Potter has seen a good many changes.

True to nurses' ethics, she "can't remember any unusual cases," except a girl with a ruptured spleen. It's a case of 'out of sight, out of mind' with her, because a nurse should never discuss a patient, she explains. "I do remember patients when I see them on the street," she says, and "of course I speak. It's usually ten to one they don't remember me," she explained, "because I'm out of uniform. wearing street clothes and I don't wear glasses in off-duty hours."

Miss Potter, member of St. Barnabas Hospital Alumnae Association finds it easier nursing in this new hospital than back in the old one on Pleasant avenue. Then it was 12 hours duty with only two night nurses for 25 patients, and three flights of stairs to climb, because the hospital had no elevator. Now nurses work eight hours.

She's known 80 interns during the 20 years, and liked them all. It was the last night of occupancy on Pleasant avenue that the hospital ran short of bassinets. Everything was to move to Brighton

It was one of Miss Potter's favorite interns, now Dr. J. Russell Moser of New York, who hurried over to Brighton avenue to take back the needed bassinet.

"IT WAS HARD with only two night nurses on," she explains, "because in case of emergency operation or delivery, one nurse had to devote all her time to that doctor, leaving the other nurse with the rest of the patients. We always managed to get our midnight supper, though, even if it was 3 a.m. when we sat down to eat!"

In those days every nurse took a turn at cooking the midnight supper. "Once in while an intern cooked," said. ''Dr. Sargent <now in the X-Ray mentJ used to cook a steak once in a while, and ~t was always pretty good too." .

Since June Miss Potter's been working in the pharmacy.

Right now she's having housekeeping problems due to renovation work. She takes all precautions to keep out dust when counting out the pills, clapping the cover of the jar on real fast. She's careful to shut the door quickly after each "visitor," so that "nary a speck 'lf plaster dust can blow in."

Leach, a retired baker, and his ex-foreman John I. Burns. Burns stayed up till 2 a. m. today to bake the cake so that it could be served with today's noon meal at the hospital. The highlight of the program for the ladies will be a tour of the Osteopathic Hospital capped by a morning coffee at the home of Mrs. Martha Winslow in Portland.

Among speakers at the sessions will be Dr. Ralph Braund, MD, of the University of Tennessee medical school and Victor Fisher. DO, director of graduate study of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathy.

Dr. Perley J . Lessard of Portland, past president of the Maine Dental Society, will conduct a discussion on :!luoridation ,of water Friday afternoon. Saturday morning the doctors will hear a report of the progress in cancer research being accomplished at the Roscoe B. Jackson Memorial Laboratory, Bar Harbor. The speaker will be Philip R. White, PhD, a researchist at the institution.

The general sessions and annual business meeting will be held with Dr. Hiram Stevens presiding. Doctor Stevens, who practices in Smyrna Mills, is the new president o! the association.

One of the key speakers, Meloon declared that "the Osteopathic Hospital is unique among hospitals in that it has no debts, owing partly to efficient management and partly to the fact that the staff doctors have themselves absorbed all deficits, without asking for aid from the community or from the Government. It does as much charitable work a bed as any other hospital, and is classified by the State as a charitable, tax-free institution. Its sincere purpose is to provide the best care for its patients."

Meloon reviewed the cost of operation, and touched upon the expansion program now under way, and declared that "a hosIlital must exhibit a social conscience which will insure that its services will be the best for the community and its citizens, and not maintained merely for the benefit of its staff doctors."

Doctor Pettapiece said, "This ceremony is in part a vindication of the courage and chari~bleness of the ten founders, and 1t is regretted that one of the founders is not here today to see this forward and progressive step."

Doctor Pettapiece added "Not only has the staff improved itself but it has trained 55 interns and seven residents in the specialties of surgery, anaesthesia and X-ray."

HON He was a builder The staff and board of trustees of the Osteopathic Hospital of Maine held a testimonial for Dr. M. Carman Pettapiece recently.

The doctor is not leaving the institution he has served for 42 years.

But he is stepping down as chairman of the Department of Radiology. Once he was the Department of Radiology. Now there are five radiologists there. That is only a part of the role played by Dr. Pettapiece, the builder.

In the 1930s, the hospital and osteopathy were in their adolescence.

The "rub doctors" were striving for the dignity of "osteopathic physicians" and the hospital was seeking greater identity.

When the hospital moved into a set of buildings on Brighton Avenue in Portland, the process of maturity was accelerated. Many individuals contributed to the growth. But three men stood out as the generators of ideas and energy. They were Dr. Lowell Hardy, chief of internal medicine; Gerald M. Kelley, administrator, and Dr. Pettapiece.

The first two are gone from the Portland scene. Dr. Hardy has re-

tired to New Hampshire, Kelley to Florida.

Under their direction, OHM grew in prestige as it grew in size. Its professionalism, dypamic leadership and abundant sense of community obligation won it national recognition. Young graduates from schools of osteopathic medicine vied for the opportunity to complete their training in Portland.

The OHM funneled many physicians into small communities which had been without professional health care for years.

At the same time, thanks in great measure to the integrity and professionalism of the three key builders, old prejudices and traditions were overcome. A new spirit of cooperation grew between osteopathy and the older, better established medical profession.

Today the Osteopathic Hospital of Maine is an integral and vital element in the total health care resource of the state. And Dr. M. Carman Pettapiece was a vital force in bringing it to pass.

The testimonial was very well deserved.

From early yesterday until late in the evening, six operting room nurses worked with maintenance employes to complete the move of operating room equipment and supplies.

Much Needed Room The new surgical suite gives surgeons at the Osteopathic Hospital some much needed room. Instead of two operalin'l rooms, they now have four. And they arc larger, too .

One of the major opcrar.ing rooms has a novel type of overhead lighting fixture. Completely mobile, the light is so equipped that a camera can be attached to make a step -bystep reco~·d o! an operation.

Camera Set -lJp The light al'>o is set up so that a small teleVISIOn camera can be secured to it for closed circuit telecasting of surgical procedures. This is so arranged that no operator need be in the operating room while the op~ration is in progress.

Carman Pettapiece, local osteopathic radiologist, is in a serious condition from shock and exposure after the airplane in which they were flying from Schenectady, N. Y., t o Portlanfl Friday landed in the sea off Allen Island, near Port Clyde.

According to Dr. Peitapiece, who was br ought to Port. land Sunday in a Coast Guard amphibian plane, the air. craft, piloted by Dr. Rossman, ran out of fuel after havin~ . been lost in the fog sev~ral hours.

• He and Dr. Rossman extricated themselves from the plane after it had crashed nose first into the sea , about 50 yards off Allen Island, near Burnt Islanr Coast Guard Sta .. tion Friday noon and started swimming for shore, Dr. Pet· tapiece said. Both were soon exhausted in the stormy seas, and Dr. Pettapieee lost consciousness as the surf picked him up and washed him ashore. When he regained I consciousness he found his clothing had caught in the rocks and kept him from being washed back into the sea.

There was no sign of Dr. Rossip.an.

After wandering over the island several hours, Dr. Pettapiece found a fisherman's shack, broke in, found food, ~tlrif"d his clotbint:" anrl slept.

Local Doctors Perform New Type Of Operatio11

A quick operation was necessary.

Doctors often are called at unusual hours, and under unusual circumstances. However, Drs. Boyd Dutton, pathologist, and John Abretske, an intern, both of the Osteopathic Hospital of Maine here, never figured they'd b~ called upon to take over the role o~ woodsmen. They were at opposite ends of a two-man crosscut saw, during the height of the hurricane, to prevent a weakened elm from toppling on the hospital.

Bookkeeper Gloria Praet and Doctor Dutton are shown above examining the felled tree. Office workers and interns had steadied it with a rope while it was being sawed. Earlier during the storm, one crashed into the hospital's office breaking some windows.

Today's nipper was about seven when he came here from his native St. John, N. B., with his parents, Morton S. and Gertrude C. Kelley, and got all dressed up for this picture. Dad was in the insurance business.

Now living at Cape Elizabeth, Gerald M. Kelley and his wife, formerly Rosalie G. Benoit of Biddeford, have three children. He goes to work at the Osteopathic Ho:>pital of Maine where he's been administrator for three years. Before that he'd been general manager since 1947.

A Portland High School graduate, he went to Boston University and was assistant manager of the Eastland s t Hotel for 17 years before entering hospital work.

SOUTH PORTLAND, April 26 -Mrs. Elaine Budd. 47, wife of Horace M. Budd, 32 Hillside Ave., died in morning in a Portland hospital afte ra long- illness. She was born in York, Sept. 5, 1907, daughter of George and Harriet Norton Adjutant and was graduated from York High School and Gray's Business College, Portland. Before her marriage she was employed as路 a stenographer by the Maine Central Railroad in Portland and later by the Boston and Maine Railroad in Boston.

Mrs. Budd attended the First Congregational Church , South Portland, and was a member of the Aider Club of Portland.

Besides her husband she is survived by a daughter. Miss Jaue M. Budd , South Portland; three sisters. Mrs. William A. Wilson, South Portland, Mrs. George A. Whitney Jr., Waltham. Mass., and Mrs. Roger Langille, Cape Elizabeth; three brothers, Clayton F. and Vincent D. Adjutant. York Beach, and Linwood G. Adjutant, Ogunquit, and several nieces and nephews.
