HP Inc. Buys Printer Business from Samsung

H

P Inc. announced a definitive agreement to acquire Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.’s (005930.KS) printer business in a deal valued at $1.05 billion. The acquisition positions HP to disrupt and reinvent the $55 billion copier industry, a segment that hasn’t innovated in decades. Copiers are outdated, complicated machines with dozens of replaceable parts requiring inefficient service and maintenance agreements. Customers are frequently frustrated with the number of visits needed to keep copier machines functioning. Today, HP is investing to disrupt this category by replacing copiers with superior multifunction printer (MFP) technology. Samsung has built a formidable portfolio of A3 MFPs that deliver the performance of copiers with the power, simplicity, reliability and ease-of-use of printers and with as few as seven replaceable parts. Integrating the Samsung printer business’ products, including their mobile-first and cloud-first user experience, with HP’s nextgeneration PageWide technologies will create a breakthrough portfolio of printing solutions with the industry’s best device, document, and data security. This is the largest print acquisition in HP’s history and accelerates its growth opportunities in the copier segment, strengthens its leading laser printing portfolio that has been established with Canon, and paves the way for future

Some Quick Quotes: Mr. Ashraf ElArman, Managing Director, Xerox India “We see GST as a big move towards a ‘One Nation One Market’ concept that turns India into a single largest common market. It will lead to savings in not only logistics & distribution costs, but also in the overall tax savings for companies that have panIndia operations like Xerox. While the rate of GST is yet to be decided, a rate of around 18-19% in which multiple levies get consummated, should reduce the overall tax impact on companies - thus resulting in further savings. With respect to channel partners, we believe it will also enable a faster supply fulfilment and efficient allocation of resources.”

Mr. Rushabh Shah, President, TAIT “Total tax on software is 15% service tax and 5.5% vat totaling about 21.24% on base rate. This will come down to 18% GST. Software is taxed twice as service tax and VAT. Now it will be single tax. We feel that GST will simplify compliance and will free up resources to concentrate on business expansion. Though, implementation will be done only after things are in place, companies need to start planning for future.”

Mr. Rajesh Doshi, Director, Zebronics “Although it’s too early to comment, we are very hopeful with GST when enacted. ‘One nation, one tax’ regime will surely decrease the documentation and also reduce the operational costs. Single point of taxation will also increase flow of the products, which is right now a big bottleneck in transportation. The IT products, which are essential in the development of country and realization of Digital India dream, comes under preferred taxes. We are hoping that it will remain the same even after implementation of GST. As on all projects, execution and implementation of GST will hold the key and can make a big difference in ease of doing business.”

Mr. Nitin Kunkolienker, VP-MAIT & DirectorCorporate Affairs, Smartlink Network Systems. “The IT-Electronics industry at large welcomes the proposed move to the GST regime, as the same would herald a new beginning in the indirect t a x a t i o n landscape of modern India, paving the way for a simplified and homogenous tax structure for goods and services. Currently, states’ VAT laws warrant submission of myriad documentation, thereby impeding free movement of goods and Central Sales Tax Law also mandates issuance of diverse statutory forms to prove among other facts that the inter-state purchase of goods is for re-sale, and inter-state movement of goods is not a sale. The GST regime would assure a break-away from the rigours of maintenance of such voluminous documentation,”

Mr. Anwar Shirpurwala, Executive Director, MAIT “In toto, the move of the Government to release the GST Law has ushered in new hope amongst industry players who have been awaiting t h e GST regime for the last few years. With the Monsoon Session of Parliament currently underway and with the Government having agreed to do away with one percent additional tax and fully compensate the States for losses in tax revenues for five years, MAIT is hopeful the Government would get the necessary support for passage of the GST Bill in the Upper House. This would herald a new dawn in the history of India’s indirect taxation regime,”

Mr. Narendra Bansal, Chairman & Managing Director, Intex Technologies “Being a manufacturing entity, Intex Technologies stands to benefit from a uniform tax regime because this will boost operational efficiencies, increase cost savings and make products m o r e competitive. This will help in a major way to simplify the way we do business a n d wi l l boost government initiatives on ease of doing business in India.”

This year Kaspersky Lab products for Windows have integrated several new functions including new features wherein, users can patch potential “holes” in their device security with Software Updater and Software Cleaner. Mr. Altaf Halde, Managing Director - South Asia, Kaspersky Lab said “India is growing at a fast pace in the digital world and so is our need for digital security. At Kaspersky Lab we strive to protect everything of value to our users from cybercriminals, hackers & malware writers. People are now more conscious about security and they are careful with their digital assets; we believe that our new product line will ensure that our users enjoy their computing experience. The new product line has become more powerful and has been further enhanced to ensure users’ privacy and security.” “At Kaspersky Lab we believe that IT security is not only about the effectiveness of a security solution. programs that they do not use on their device. In addition to the fact that this overloads the device memory, it also provides extra opportunities for cybercriminals to penetrate the system. Software Cleaner scans all applications installed on the computer and marks those posing potential risk. Users sometimes do not even know about these applications being installed on their devices or are unaware of their negative affects. In addition to the new functions, Kaspersky Internet Security and Kaspersky Total Security have been enhanced with improved advanced technologies such as the multi-level protection of financial transactions (with Safe Money), the prevention of the installation of unwanted applications (with Application Manager, part of the former Change Control feature) and the blocking of advertising banners in the browser (with AntiBanner).

We are striving to offer the user these possibilities with each new version of our solutions”, commented Elena Kharchenko, Head of Consumer Product Management, Kaspersky Lab.

Software Updater One of the common methods of malware penetrating the computer is the use of errors (so-called vulnerabilities) in the programs installed on it. Developers regularly update their products, however not all users regularly update these on their devices. Software Updater can automatically find the applications that need to be updated and, if the user agrees, install the latest versions from vendor sites on their computer. The user can also request the update of an application manually or add any of them to the list of applications that should not be updated (for example, if the older version is required).
