FESTIVAL SCHEDULE
CONTENTS
A message from our Executive Director Dear Patrons, Thank you so much for attending this year’s festival and for supporting our wonderful mountain community. Over the past 5 years, we have screened hundreds of powerful films from around the globe. The films we screen and the stories we share are important. They broaden our perspective and inspire us to lead better lives. While you’ve seen the films, it’s likely that you don’t know the story of how Shane Baldwin and I started Wasatch Mountain Arts.
6 years ago, Shane & I were students at the University of Utah studying in the Parks, Recreation & Tourism department. After running into each other at an entrepreneurship conference we decided to team up and find something that our wonderful community needed

MOVES WITH YOUR BODY
Meet the Directors: Jérôme Tanon—Zabardast What is in your gear bag/kit? The strict minimum for this trip, since weight was a major problem. No change for clothes, only sleeping/camping gear and camera gear, with a lot of medium format films to go with the Pentax 6x7 and it’s 4 lenses, an ND filter and macro ring.
What item can you not live without? For ZABARDAST, we couldn’t have made it without class 4 sunglasses. Loosing them would put you in a really bad situation. Gloves also were very handy. In opposition, we didn’t need our phones at all.
Who has been most influential in your directing career? I can’t tell, but for this film there is one movie which inspired me from the start, which is The Thin Red Line by Terrence Malick. I felt like going to war, but a internal and contemplative war; so I though of this film right away and showed it to Pierre and Julien our cameramen. On the other side, during the whole process of making our film, I purposedly didn’t watch any adventure film, to avoid being influenced.
Most necessary character-quality for a director? Really I have no idea, since i’m completely new to this. Keeping the team together, being resilient, confident, passionate, are crucial. Making sure everyone in the crew finds its personal space, is appreciated, and keeping peace. Very valuable.
and joy, our now brotherhood of a team had this time for contemplation and cultural exchange before going home, and it was incredible.
Craziest on-set/en route to set adventure? Well, we had to take a pretty crazy jeep ride through canyons to get to the Karakoram Range in Pakistan, one we will never forget. The jeep was litteraly touching the cliff one side, and wheel halfway in the void on the other side. It was nervewrecking.
How do you choose music for your films? Zabardast has a mix of tunes composed especially for it by Jonathan Saguez, with who I discussed the melodies, styles,

FREE FALLING Directed by Katie Cook 0:23:41 | ONLINE Denver BASE jumper Danny Weiland confronts the emotional toll of his friends’ deaths by gearing up to reclaim the World Record for most human-powered BASE jumps in a 24 hour period. Unassisted by machines or vehicles, Danny will jump off of the Perrine Bridge in Idaho over 60 times and then climb the 486 feet back out of the canyon all on his own, including over near-vertical sections of cliff where a wrong move could be fatal. The sheer number of jumps needed to break the record means that he must climb more vertical feet than the summit of Mount Everest, all in a single day. Graceful hands lead a sharp, thick graver as wood shavings litter a cold worktable. Body—arms, torso, and head—sways as rhythm of breath turns focus inward. This immersive activity, this flow-state moment, reveals long streaks, quick chips, and deep cuts – a beauteous display of concentric arcs and parallel lines. Mountains begin to form. The metal graver rides these unmaterialized hills as if it visits often, navigating its line with confidence. An envisioned topography soon materializes.
Athlete, artist, outdoor enthusiast, and printmaking extraordinaire, Jim Harris carves captivating landscapes into large woodblocks. His ink prints offer a profound mindfulness gained from outdoor experience. Before he discovered woodcut printmaking, Harris found great success

through a number of well-known companies such as Camp 4 Collective and National Geographic. Adventuring with top-tier athletes and traveling to distant lands became Jim’s regular and something he took pride in; his passport filled with illegible, colorful marks.
But in the fall of 2014, a routine snow kiting trip in the Patagonian Ice Cap turned nightmarish. Immobile in a Chilean hospital bed, Jim Harris found himself paralyzed from the sternum down. Nine crushed vertebrae stripped him of identity, livelihood, and lifeblood. For a moment, Jim was small. He knew only his thoughts and breath. Without

physical therapy took Jim two years. Today, Jim stands erect, testing his disabilities to their limit by mountain biking, skiing, hiking, and surfing. An improbable recovery with unexpected outcomes.
But on those long, despairing days when inevitable suffering and diminishing returns instilled doubt, Jim faced himself in ways he never expected. An epic life no longer obtainable and art never so distant, questions of identity and purpose arose. Depression sank and ‘success’ became a sobering concept. Desiring contentment and satisfaction, Jim looked beyond himself, navigating his intentions, motivations, and identity with a fresh perspective.
We are really bad at forecasting the amount of satisfaction that things or experiences will bring us. We think some ‘thing’ will make us happy, but soon enough that thing becomes another thing. As Jim carves expansive vistas into woodblocks, he conveys a message. Realizing he wished to achieve experience instead of experience it, Jim found an unprecedented sense of purpose and gratitude. His motivations shifted: “I came to this existential hole during recovery where non-duality, feeling like I was a part of a whole, was the only thing that pulled myself back together.” Life would never be the same, but it would continue to be good.
Mindfulness, for Jim, is how we point our attention. “It is the intense focus on the present demanded by a powder line or steep mountain biking pitch. It is that autotelic,

In 2013, Stuart Derman and Shane Baldwin began working on a project aimed at connecting people with the outdoors. Over the past few years this project has snowballed into the local non profit organization, Wasatch Mountain Arts. Early on, the team identifed film as an incredibly powerful medium to create a lasting bond. It was in that moment that the Wasatch Mountain Film Festival was born.
As an organization, Wasatch Mountain Arts has a vision that extends far beyond the annual film festival. In time WMA aims to develop consistent year round program as well as the construction of a mountain culture and arts center to serve as the hub of all outdoor program in the area.
With your continued help and support we can make this dream into a reality. Please visit our website to learn more about getting involved.
WMA was started in 2014 with the foundational ambition to change what being passionate about the Wasatch Front really means. 36
On the 5th Anniversary of our first annual Mountain Film Festival, we take a look ahead at what we see in our future.
How does Wasatch Mountain Arts (WMA) want to engage the outdoor community in 2019? By hosting events that inspire. We want our community members to leave events with a new perspective on what is possible in their world.
How does WMFF hope to impact up-and-coming filmmakers? From de-mystifying the director world via panels, gear lists, and interviews to maintaining our reputation as an esteemed film-sharing organization, WMFF is intent on creating an environment conducive to developing the next generation of filmmakers.
What kind of influence does WMFF aim for in the outdoor industry? We hope to widen the proverbial tent of outdoor recreation by making the outdoors appealing, fun, and accessible. A film festival is the perfect platform for diverse groups to represent their materialized connection to the outdoors, be it through backcountry skiing, mountain biking, kayaking, mountaineering, or ice climbing. At our events, we include local and international artists, non-profits, community/
