SPREAD THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT
S Five-year-old Edgar on lap of military officer on base in Yuma, Arizona. Celebrating diversity as a tiny tyke!
ee the kid in the picture who’s sitting on Santa’s lap? Yep, that’s me. Why the face? Well, my mother was making a big deal over taking the picture and I just wanted to play with my friends. Did I make a fuss because I wasn’t with a traditional Santa? No, it didn’t matter to me what the guy looked like if he had the long white beard and a red suit. Guess I believed in diversity at an early age. Today, putting an emphasis on diversity is more important than ever.
We’ll be feeling the effects of this year’s presidential election for quite some time, and instead of shutting ourselves in, we need to live out in the open more fiercely than ever. I’ve recently gone back to school, and one of the concepts I’ve learned from my U.S. government classes is federalism. Basically, it’s a compound form of government that combines a central, or federal, government with regional governments (city, county, state) in a single political system. In this system, what happens locally can influence what happens in the central government. It’s up to us to organize locally and become the positive change we want to see. There are many ways to get involved. For instance, you can volunteer for one of the Chamber’s committees and help us continue our mission of economic equality. Or, in the back of this magazine, there’s a list of many nonprofit members of the AGLCC that fight every day to improve the environment for LGBT people and their allies. These nonprofits can use your assistance — financial and otherwise. Don’t know where to start? Reach out to me, and I’ll be happy to point you in the right direction. Even the smallest act of generosity could be a big deal for a local nonprofit. What else can you do? Spend your money locally and invest in LGBT and LGBTfriendly businesses; you can find many of them listed in the member directory in the back of this publication. Who knows — Santa might even wind up putting a gift from a local merchant under your tree this holiday season… without having to sit on Santa’s lap! THE REAL GIFTS OF THE HOLIDAYS
A Transgender Dad and His Family Celebrate Hope and Love BY JEFF DAVIS

It’s that time of the year again. Jingle bells are ringing,

stores are packed, and the slightest threat of Jack Frost nipping at I-35 sends motorists into a tizzy. But even amid the chaos of the holidays, many of us find time for family. We asked one LGBT family in Austin — attorney Afton Cavanaugh, who is transgender; his wife, Mariah; and their three children, Harmony, Aurora and Bri — about what the holidays mean to them. Where are you originally from, what do you do for work, and how long have you been in Austin?
partner and I own Cavanaugh Quintanilla, where we practice business and real estate law. Mariah: I was born in California, and have lived in Florida and New Mexico. I teach preschoolers, and I love it. I have lived in Austin for 13 years; before Austin, I lived in Albuquerque. What are your thoughts on the holidays?
Afton: I was born in San Antonio, but I have lived in Austin since I was 4 years old. I spent several years homeless and moving all over this city, so I know every pocket of Austin well. Both my parents are in and out of prison, so my aunt and grandmother helped raise me and my three younger brothers. I love Austin and can’t imagine calling anyplace else home. I spend my days working as an attorney. My law
Afton: I love the holidays. Nothing makes me happier than having all our families together. When I was younger and times were hard, the holidays could be lonely and isolating. I am so happy to be creating new traditions and memories for my own children, and for my nieces and nephews. The look on my kids’ faces when we go visit Santa or find some fake snow, or when WI N TER 2 0 1 7 | A G L C C . O R G

they get that one item they have been dying for, fills me with joy. Being transgender, I never believed I would have a family of my own to celebrate the holidays with. I assumed nobody would want to deal with me because I was “different.” Mariah: I f---ing love them more than anything in this world. I have an obsessive happiness that comes from the holiday season, and I am determined to drag everyone into my holiday happiness bubble. I decorate for Christmas on November 1! I don’t really care about Thanksgiving. We are atheist, so for us this is about celebrating family and love. There is something so hopeful and joyful about Christmas. And I just love it! What traditions do you and your family follow during the holidays? Afton: My family didn’t have many traditions. We put Santa’s name on every present, the adults always stayed up all night wrapping gifts and we always sang together on Christmas, but this approach more just happened then anyone planned it that way. My wife brought most of our

traditions from her own childhood, and we created some along the way. Every year, I make a slideshow with memories from the year that we all watch together at our Christmas Day gathering, and that is always a lot of fun. My goal is to capture and use as many awkward pictures as possible! Mariah: On November 1, the Christmas decorations go up. We open a present on Christmas Eve with the kids; we always have them open a new pair of pajamas. We all have hot chocolate and watch a Christmas movie while also roasting marshmallows. Afton and I open our presents to each other after the kids are in bed so that we can focus on the kids in the morning, and that is always a special memory for me.

means they come barging in at 7 a.m., and we have no time to actually get nice clothes on before we head downstairs and open presents. Afton has an annoying tradition of taking the worst possible Christmas pictures! Then we get ready for the rest of the family to join us. Do you have a favorite holiday memory? Afton: That is a tough one. We have made a lot of great holiday memories over the past 14 years that make up for the not-so-great ones before that. I have to say that our Christmas party in 2014 was probably one of my most favorite memories. My nephew who had been diagnosed with cancer on Christmas Day in 2013 was doing so well and was old enough to know what Christmas was for the first time, and my wife’s mom and sister were visiting us from California. We played white elephant, and there was so much laughter and excitement over the goofy gifts that it was hard not to feel overwhelmed by all the love in the room. Harmony: My favorite memory is opening my presents first thing in the morning before everyone comes over. Aurora: My favorite memory is picking out our ornaments for the year. Every year, each of us picks out a new ornament to add to the tree so that when we grow up we can take them and put them on our own trees. Bri: My favorite memory is the chicken hat that keeps getting bounced back and forth during the white elephant. Mariah: My favorite memory is my first
Christmas with Afton. We had just moved to Austin in July, and it was so nice to be near family. I got Afton an engraved ring for Christmas celebrating our engagement, and it was my most favorite gift I have ever given to him. Do you have any holiday advice for young LGBT couples who are starting a family? Afton: Spend the day with people you love and who want to spend it with you. If you have family traditions that you cherish, keep them alive for your kids and come up with some new ones unique to your family. We came up with some that we do starting in December and throughout the month. Don’t make gifts the focus of Christmas! Keep it simple for your kids. The real happiness can and should come from the experience. To me, Christmas is about sharing love and joy with others, whether that includes your family or friends, or just your little unit. Oh, and take a lot of pictures! It is so fun to go back and look at the face they made when they opened a present, or the silly dance they did to the Christmas music. Mariah: Make up your own traditions. Make it about your family, and make it fun. It should be about whatever is going to make you happy on that day. If you can spend it with your extended family and want to, you should. But if you don’t want to, just enjoy it with your own little family. If your family is not accepting of you, then don’t go around them; it’s not worth the pain they will cause you on those special days. Or make it clear you won’t keep coming around if they mistreat you. What is important are your happiness and your family — your wellness and happiness should be front and center for you. BUBBLY for Every Budget
Toast the New Year with Champagnes and Sparkling Wines BY PAIGE SCHILT
When it comes to New Year’s Eve, some folks like to paint the town red, while others prefer to put on their PJs and watch the ball drop with Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin. Regardless of how you celebrate, there’s one essential ingredient for any New Year’s party: a bubbly beverage for a midnight toast. We asked two local experts to share their top picks for toasting the New Year.

WALLET WISE For affordability and drinkability, Walsh recommends Mionetto Prosecco from Italy’s Treviso region. “It’s a little bit sweet without being overbearing,” he says, making it perfect for those who like their wines a little less dry. Bouvet Brut Rosé is Nelson’s pick for a budget-savvy sparkler. While some lower-end sparkling wines are injected with bubbles, the bubbles of this delicately pink wine are “naturally formed inside the bottle,” she says, making it easy to savor the “flavors of fresh strawberries and aromas of roses.”

SENSIBLE SAVOIR FAIRE For medium-range wines, Walsh and Nelson suggest two strategies. Nelson looks for “sparkling wines that have had time to develop and become something special,” such as Gramona La Cuvée 2011 Cava, which boasts “incredible toasted brioche characteristics with a beautiful backbone of fresh lemon.” Walsh, on the other hand, looks to a sparkling blend from a classic champagne house. Veuve Cliquot Yellow Label Brut is made with wines from different harvests that are blended to create a consistent fruity and toasty flavor. Pinot Noir predominates, giving this wine a “bigger, more robust taste.” Bonus: Yellow Label often is discounted for the holiday season. only “when conditions are just perfect and they’re able to create a really perfect Champagne,” Walsh explains. He favors Dom Perignon 2002, which he describes as “almost like the Scotch of champagnes. You get a little bit of subtle brininess with really crisp acidity and a nice velvety feel on the palate.” Nelson prefers to party like it’s 1998 with GH Mumm Cuvée R. Lalou 1998. “GH Mumm is a classic producer, and the Cuvée R. Lalou is their ‘tête du cuvée,’ which translates to the best wine the house has made.” Nelson loves the delicate bubbles with tons of fresh and dried fruits, followed by a touch of vanilla and honey. “It’s great to share with a special guest,” she says, “or just by yourself — because this wine is a date all on its own!”

A Trio Of
Valentine’s Day Love Stories WR ZDUP \RXU KHDUW BY SARAH MARLOFF
26
T HE AGENDA | WI NTER 2 017
The
holidaze season is upon us. Stores and streets glitter with Chrismukkah decorations, while trees, menorah and yule logs twinkle all around us. We know the December holidays get all the glory, but we also like looking forward to February’s sole special day for us to appreciate those extra-special people in our lives. Say what you will about Valentine’s Day – it’s a Hallmark holiday, a day to make single people feel crappy, a significant stressor for significant others. But let’s be honest: There’s something special about a day where it’s not sappy or eye-roll-y to tell your boo you like him or her. A lot. I, for one, have never put much stock in a typical Valentine’s Day celebration – roses, chocolates and a fancy night out are not Feb. 14 requirements. My preferred way for the two of us to celebrate our relationship is to do something that literally celebrates us. My partner and I – especially in our poorer days – would plan “picnic” dinners. We’d buy berries, cheese, deli meats, crackers and the Whole Foods $3 wine special, lay out a blanket it our living room and picnic the night away. The DIY date night has become our Valentine’s goto. And the goal has always remained the same: avoid the stress. Avoid a big to-do. Make it ours. VALENTINE’S DAY: ANYTHING BUT TAXING Austin CPA Carlie Bittel of Bittel Books & Taxes and her partner have taken a similar approach to celebrating Valentine’s Day. “We are totally fine with avoiding the typical Valentine’s Day dinner rush by staying in or finding something nontraditional to do,” Bittel says. The couple has been together for nearly four years, after meeting in a class they both took at the University of Kansas. “It was a ‘Health and Human Sexuality’ class, and it was taught by a former KU professor that was fired by the Kansas Board of Regents for not teaching the course in a ‘conventional’ way – he showed porn, dedicated a whole class to

homosexuality, another to gender and how sometimes the gender you’re assigned isn’t the gender you are – not things that conservative states like to endorse in their sex ed classes,” Bittel says. “Afterwards, the class went out to a bar, and Kelly and I got to know each other from there. We eventually discovered that she lived less than a mile from me and that we shared a whole friend group, but somehow hadn’t met before.” The two moved to Austin a little over a year later. For Valentine’s Day, the important thing for Bittel is being together and being open about their feelings for each other. “Usually someone gets flowers for the other. Last time around, the pair spent Valentine’s Day in Dallas cheering on the U.S. women’s soccer team. But, of course, we all have those wishes we wish our partners would tap into. For Bittel, that secret Valentine’s wish is to spend the 2017 observance in in the middle of nowhere. “I mean, I wouldn’t say no to a surprise beach resort vacation!” she jokes.

A RELATIONSHIP THAT WAS IN THE CARDS Becky Clark of Send Out Cards, which gives customers a hassle-free way to craft and send personalized cards, is looking forward to spending a second Valentine’s Day with her partner, Kathy. They began dating in August 2015, after meeting during a rough time in Clark’s life. “We met when I was caring for my mom at the end of her life... I was burning the candle at both ends, working and spending hours each day with my mom,” Clark says. To blow off some steam, Clark went out to a bowling meetup and dinner one night where she ended up at a table with several women who also had lost their mothers to cancer. Kathy was one of them. “What are the odds, right? Kathy volunteered to do Reiki on my mom. That’s how we got to know each other.” They’ve been together ever since. In Clark’s mind, Valentine’s is not just a day for lovers, but also for friends and family. “It’s a day set aside to let those we love, know that we love them. I could always count on getting a Valentine’s Day card from my mom, and I sent them to both my parents once I started with the card business. Though I have to admit that I was horrible at sending cards before that,” she says. “I
think a few others out there may be able to relate to what I’m saying.” Sending them might have been difficult, but cards always have played a role in her Valentine’s celebrations. Regardless of the day’s plans, a card is an integral part of the package, along with a special dinner or perhaps wine tasting, Clark says. “I have to admit that the older I get, the less I tolerate the crowds and prices associated with eating out on Valentine’s Day,” Clark says. Her current favorite is to hire a personal chef to whip up a marvelous Valentine’s Day meal, do the clean-up and sneak out the back door for the evening. But the most important aspect of Valentine’s is to create a special day for her special person. “I’m not the most romantically creative person ever,” Clark says. “I think that, really, the most special thing to do is to be present with my partner – leave all the distractions of my regular world outside and create a space for true intimacy.” Becky and Kathy

oard and business members of the AGLCC attended the annual National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce Conference in Palm Springs in August. Board members attended training courses on how to improve processes, procedures 1 and programming for our affiliate chamber here in Austin. (And, yes, a fair number of cocktails were imbibed as well.) Look for our new “Biz Dev 101” courses in 2017 (modeled on the Atlanta chamber’s “AGLCC University”), in which members and nonmembers may attend a bimonthly class on business planning, sales force growth, financial planning, social media, new technologies and more. With 2017 being the our AGLCC’s 20th anniversary year, look for positive changes and a big leap forward for your businesses!

Lick’s Ladies of the ’80s Birthday Bash! PHOTOS COURTESY OF CLARISSA RAMIREZ

Lick Honest Ice Creams celebrated its 5th anniversary on October 8 at Spider House Ballroom with its Ladies of the 80’s Birthday Bash! Partygoers got into the theme showing up with big hair and in neon colors to enjoy unlimited scoops of Lick ice cream specialty party flavors like “Papa Don’t Preach” (inspired by Madonna), “Stay Golden” (an homage to The Golden Girls), and “Dirty Dancing.” All proceeds of the evening benefited Hill Country Ride for AIDS. And, as if that wasn’t enough, to cap off a great evening Lick co-owner Chad Palmatier, proposed to fellow co-owner Anthony Sobotik on his birthday (midnight) in front of everyone. Now that’s about as big as it comes! 4

Steven Collins, Advertising Sales for Statesman Media statesmanmedia.com | See listing on p. 41
Steven is a near look-alike for the young Kris Kringle in “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” Now that’s a hot Santa! What is your usual fitness routine? I run five days a week and vary between three and five miles per run. I close out the day with a solid workout in the gym. How does your activity level affect your workday? Although I get up early, I am definitely not a morning person, but it I don’t get my run in before work, I feel like I am stuck in a fog until lunchtime. Most of the time if I choose to sleep in, I get out on the trail on my lunch break and squeeze in a few miles just to get myself going. How do you avoid the dreaded holiday weight gain? Certainly not by avoiding the food. Holiday time is a foodie’s paradise and while I don’t get tempted by the sweet stuff, you better not be standing between me and the mac and cheese. I increase my calorie burn during the holidays, adding extra miles or extra days to my running schedule to offset the extra food. Lastly, do you have any New Year’s Resolutions you care to share? I normally don’t make resolutions, however I do have some big fitness goals that I would like to attain in 2017. Through a healthy diet and dedication to my fitness routine I hope to achieve them before summer time. Thanks, Steven. We’ll be looking for you on Lady Bird trail. Happy running!
