DROP BY THE VISITOR CENTER “Once you’ve found Wimberley, you’ll discover why it’s called “a little bit of heaven.
There are no major highways running through town and being far away from the hustle and bustle of the big city is one of the reasons people love it here. 2017 WIMBERLEY SPRING & SUMMER GUIDE
Whether it’s a dish from your childhood or a favorite meal, comfort food occupies a very special place in the hearts of many. For rainy afternoons, long work days or a longing for a taste of the past— everyone has a favorite dish that warms their heart. With The Leaning Pear, Cypress Creek Cafe, Linda’s Fine Foods and The Back Porch, Wimberley has excellent comfort food to suit every craving. Each restaurant draws from a different style of cuisine to take comfort food to another level. Located on River Road, The Leaning Pear specializes in cuisine cooked with the ingredients of the Hill Country. Since 2007, Matthew and Rachel Buchanan have strived to make their restaurant a place to relax and enjoy. The Leaning Pear serves lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday with brunch on Sundays. For Chef Matthew Buchanan, comfort food at the Leaning Pear is all about Chicken and Grits— a staple in the south. Starting with a boneless chicken breast, vacuum sealed DQG FRRNHG ORQJ DQG VORZ %XFKDQDQ JLYHV LW D TXLFN Ă€ QLVK LQ KLV ZRRG Ă€ UHG RYHQ WR JLYH WKH RXWVLGH D QLFH FULVSLQHVV Using Homestead Mill grits spiced with poblano peppers, FKHHVH DQG EDFRQ %XFKDQDQ VHUYHV WKH Ă€ QLVKHG PHDO LQ D cast iron skillet with a seasonal vegetable from the farmer’s market. “It’s just one of those dishes that has southern ties and feel. It’s kind of comfort foodie,â€? Buchanan said referring to the ‘foodie’ trend of unique, gourmet food. “We put our own little twist on it.â€? Step into downtown Wimberley, and the Cypress Creek Cafe and Buzzard Bar has a different take on serving up comfort to visitors. Owners Randy and Trish Uselton

purchased the cafe in 2010, and it has specialized in southern Texas style cuisine seven days a week ever since. For Trish 8VHOWRQ FRPIRUW IRRG LV GHĂ€QHG DV D SRUN FKRS “That’s always been my favorite ever since I was a little girl,â€? Uselton said.â€?I grew up in the cattle industry... so we always had steak and beef. But if you asked me what I wanted for dinner, I wanted a pork chop. It just makes me feel good.â€? The dish starts with a pork chop that’s been brined for 24 hours with rosemary and thyme. Then, it’s charbroiled and served with a peach and habanero sauce along with a choice of two sides. Uselton enjoys hers with a side of seasonal vegetables and mashed potatoes. If you are looking for D FR]LHU KRPH FRRNHG DWPRVSKHUH \RX FDQ¡W Ă€QG anywhere better than Linda’s Fine Foods on FM 2325. Since 2006, Chef Linda Allen has served up an eclectic menu inspired by world cuisines on a changing weekly menu, six days a week. But the entree most often requested by locals and visitors alike throughout the year is a bowl of her chicken and dumplings. While there are many different ways to make this hearty fare, Allen prefers to saute carrots, celery, onion with sage and thyme in a sauce of white wine, chicken broth, lemon juice, garlic and
cream. She adds simmered chicken and green peas, topping it with a homemade buttermilk dumpling. “I think it reminds a lot of people of the food their mother cooked,â€? Allen said. In contrast, for those whose stomachs call out for barbecue— 7KH %DFN 3RUFK RQ &\SUHVV &UHHN LV WKH SODFH WR UH OLYH WKH nostalgia of barbecue cookouts past— with a modern twist. Chef Jay Bachman combines traditional barbecue with Cryovac and sous vide techniques to serve up unique barbeque. For Bachman, barbecue is the ultimate in comfort food. The “Hambulanceâ€? is Bachman’s own creation combining pulled pork with a beef patty for the best of both worlds. Starting with a half pound of %ODFN $QJXV EHHI VHDUHG RQ D Ă DW WRS and topped with cheddar cheese and bacon, Bachman adds pulled pork topped with their signature Dr. Pepper sauce and Wimberley Valley Gourmet’s “Sweet and Sassy Picklesâ€? on a ciabatta bun. “That’s my comfort food, and it works for me,â€? Bachman said. No matter what food you consider to be your personal comfort food, restaurants like The Leaning Pear, Cypress Creek Cafe and Buzzard Bar, Linda’s Fine Foods and The Back Porch each offer their own take on what it means to serve up comfort food in Wimberley.

Jacob’s Well Natural Area, a Hays County park, is an ecological wonder. The well is a natural artesian spring that forms the headwaters of Cypress Creek. Underground springs replenish the ‘well,’ which keeps the water consistently around 68 degrees year round. Once you have seen this natural wonder, you will be tempted to swim in it. Reservations are required, as it is a very popular locale and visitor retreat. Due to the fragile nature of the springs, only a limited number of swimmers are allowed at any given time. Besides the swimming area there are also hiking trails and a visitor’s center, with a Master Naturalist on hand to answer any questions about the park. Guides offer education about the local aquifers. The main entrance is located at 1699 Mount Sharp Road in Wimberley. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Free tours offered every Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The swimming season kicks off on Memorial Day weekend. Please visit https://jwna. In 2015, Middleton brewed 900 barrels. Each holding 31 gallons. In 2016, they increased production to almost 1,200 barrels. The brewery now has an established list of core beers, their mainstays, that now are available in cans: Third Coast IPA, Bobcat Red, Black Lab Porter and Garnet Amber. They also offer seasonal beers or unique brews such as Pepperhead, which is brewed with hot peppers. Among other award winners, the Black Lab Porter took the Gold Medal award at the 2016 U.S. Open Beer Championship. Middleton Brewing is located at 101 Oakwood Loop and is technically in San Marcos although it is just a few short minutes outside of Wimberley along Ranch Road 12 near the Junction. 50

This year, the fest will be held at Waters Point, located at Rio Bonito Resort. In previous years the event has been held at the Wimberley Square and at Blue Hole Regional Park. This year the fest moves into its new digs, and it surely will make a splash at the convergence of the Cypress Creek and the Blanco River – a beautiful spot to highlight the arts. For sale at the festival will be paintings, photographs, crafts, jewelry and other objects d’art. This all happens under tents where 100 local and national artists, will exhibit their talents. Wimberley Arts Fest also features free parking, food trucks and adult beverage trucks. But what is a festival in Wimberley without music? Bluegrass, rock, country, you name it; Wimberley’s always got it. For more information visit wimberleyartsfest.com.
