tiques that are open year round also offer a wealth of opportunity for browsing, buying and people watching. Shopping can be thirsty work and the Wimberley Valley has become a mecca for wineries, breweries and distilleries. Most have tasting rooms open to the public and there are also several tour companies that will do the driving for you. Wimberley’s culinary scene continues to evolve with taste-bud-tempting options available for every palate. From culinary creations to quick bites by the creek; from catered picnics to fast food and from early morning coffee to late night snacks while listening to great music, Wimberley’s dining options will please your palate and sate your appetite. Special events become even more special in the Wimberley Valley. Weddings, reunions and celebrations of every stripe take on a unique resonance here, with memories made that will last a lifetime. celebrates the arts.
imberley’s Bootiful project has brought the arts-loving community renown from sources near and far. With 30 giant boots scattered around town, the public art project gives visitors and residents alike a reason to explore the Wimberley Valley and its many attributes. Boots can be found from one end of the valley to the other and an expedition to view the boots will bring you to some of Wimberley’s most celebrated locales. “It’s been great, because the boots bring attention to Wimberley as an arts and cultural destination,” Cathy Moreman, co-executive director of the Wimberley Valley Chamber of Commerce, said. “They also provide great art in a free and public setting.” With boots whimsical and realistic as well as historical and fanciful, exploring the artistry on the boots also provides a perfect opportunity to contemplate Wimberley’s cultural and natural significance. While most boots have been painted with their scenes, boot fans will also discover metalwork, glass and mosaic embellished boots. By popular demand, the 30 boots will soon be joined by an additional 16 boots, set to be unveiled at Wimberley ArtsFest, April 17-19. “It’s been remarkable how many tourist and residents have flocked to the boots to have their pictures taken,” Moreman said. “They are tweeting, Instagraming and Facebooking pictures of their friends and family. It’s free entertainment.” For more information about the Wimberley Valley and to pick up your own guide to the “boot trail,” stop by the Wimberley Visitor Center, located at 14100 Ranch Road 12. visit is not complete without taking a trip to the center of town to see the Wimberley Square. Since at least the 1870’s and Bob Moore’s Trading Post, long since vanished, the Wimberley Square has been “downtown” Wimberley. Although it has gone through many changes, the Square today is a very important, if not the most important part of town, just like in the old West days. “There are a mix of eclectic businesses unlike anywhere in the state with unmatched character, tremendously maintained. It is the ultimate destination for a taste of small town Texas,” Wimberley City Manager Don Ferguson said. It is a destination for visitors and locals alike, to find that “perfect gift” or that unique item that one just has to have. Over 40 shops that offer kitchen supplies, artifacts, linens, wine and beer, furniture and home furnishings, quaint clothing boutiques, coffee shops, and other one-of-a-kind stores. Even during the weekdays, visitors are drawn to the Square. For example, the Old Mill Store offers not only boutique gifts but also old timey candy, fudge, and Blue Bell ice cream where the whole family can sit and relax. Kiss the Cook offers many cooking utensils you didn’t even know existed. Wine and gourmet food tastings also helps one refresh from a hard day of shopping. There are also benches interspersed throughout the Square, so you can kick back and prop your feet up. Fashion also has its place with Wall Street Western Wear, the Cedar Chest, Brocante, and for shoes there’s the instyle accessories and the Boot Whisperer to name a few. Home décor and furnishings are also represented whether Western style, like Rancho Deluxe or more European like Aunt Jenny’s Attic. There are also restaurants, like the Wimberley Café

on the Square, where the locals meet or for Italian fare, Marcos Italian Restaurant. Cypress Creek Café is one of Wimberley’s longest standing restaurants and offers some of the best food in town. A sign outside of Ino’z Brew and Chew aptly states “Daddy Day Care: Leave your husband with us” for those significant others who need a break from the shopping experience. There is more to the Square than shopping and food though. Art galleries are everywhere in Wimberley, but the largest concentration is nestled within the town’s center. Whether you are looking for paintings, photographs, sculpture, you name it, the Square has it. Shopping at the Square is an adventure. The walk can bring you back to the olden days with the quaint, small-town Texas feel, but beware before you come. Some of these shops can become your new favorite. You might just find yourself coming back again and again, like people have for over a century.

here is plenty to do on the Wimberley Square, but Downtown Wimberley has much more to offer. – and it’s only a few steps away. The beauty of being in a small town like Wimberley is that everything you are looking for is just around the corner. “Downtown” Wimberley may not be the downtown you would think of in terms of a big center, but there is plenty to offer. Just take a few steps off the square in any direction and you’ll see. A walk down Ranch Road 12 from the square offers multiple art galleries and shops of interest. Starting on the left hand side, you can wet your whistle with a little wine at Taste Buds before continuing up the road to The Rock Shop for one-ofa-kind artifacts from the earth. You can jaunt next door to Sante Fe Connection for gifts, collectibles and fine arts or stop in to the Pickle Street Boutique for a bit of the French Country style home décor and gifts. Continue down the road for the leather shop sombrillo and the Herb Room for handmade herbal soaps and body products before checking out Chulita’s for handcrafted cotton clothing and purses from Guatemala. Just a few steps further and you’ll find Sassy Scrappers, your place for everything Sassy and Scrappy including scrapbooks and card supplies along with gifts and home décor. Before you cross over Ranch Road 12, get a few tastings at Cackleberry Mercantile where they keep a tasting bar stocked daily with gourmet foods and plenty more to see. If you start on the southside of Ranch Road 12 instead, there is still plenty more to see. Pitzer Art Gallery is just a few feet from the Wimberley Square and has some of the finest art and statues in town. A few steps further down the road, and you can find The Bazaar with unique women’s fashion apparel. The next must-stop shop is the new gallery Art on 12. Continue on to Dovetails for a wide variety of clothing options before visiting Shop the Treehouse for furniture, gifts and home décor with personality. Trek on down to Happy Home Interior for home furnishings, décor and unique gifts. Whatever you do, don’t make the mistake of thinking shopping ends at the edge of the Wimberley Square. There is more shopping to be had. There are dozens of shops just a few steps down any street, whether it be Ranch Road 12 or Old Kyle Road. Take a few extra steps, so you don’t miss out.

He likes to “keep a kinship with customers” and to remember, “we’re in the entertainment field.” Providing non-stressful surroundings and wine at $4 to $7 a glass is what keeps customers returning. Valentine’s interest in wine comes from spending summers at his grandfather’s small farm, where grapes were raised and exchanged for wine. After serving in the Air Force, he decided the Hill Country was too pretty to leave and worked as a carpenter in Gruene. veryone loves going to the movies, but few have experienced seeing a movie like those in the Wimberley Valley have for decades at the Corral Theatre. he arts are thriving in Wimberley, and there may not be a better example of that then the Second Saturday Gallery Trail The gallery trail offers the opportunity to view the art of Wimberley with 15 galleries and shops participating in the once-a-month event. Stop by just about any gallery in Wimberley to find a map that leads you from one side of town to the other.

Along the way, you can see why Wimberley is considered a place full of artist. Many of the galleries in town have local paintings and sculptures while others bring in art from around the world. On the second Saturday of the month, you can stop in for free wine and food at participating galleries and shops from 4 to 7 p.m..Often times, you can even find a bit of live music for extra entertainment. But it doesn’t have to be the second Saturday to enjoy
Wimberley’s arts. Stop by the many galleries around town, find a map of Bootiful Wimberley at the Wimberley Valley Chamber of Commerce or simply find the art yourself. There are wonderful murals strown throughout town at places like Inoz Brew and Chew, Hotel Flaura and Fauna and even a wall along Ranch Road 12 near River Road. ne of the most interesting and fascinating businesses in the area is the Wimberley Glassworks. Open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, it is amazing to watch the glassblowers create pieces of art. Glass chandeliers to drinking glasses, wall decorations to vases, each piece is a creative experience, with thought, patience, and workmanship going into each unique piece. Since 1992, the glassworks has entertained both residents and visitors with live demonstrations on a daily basis. The excellence in glass is nationally known with pieces commissioned by individuals and corporations. The owner, Tim Dejong, receives his inspiration from the beautiful Wimberley area, with the colors of the land, light and sunsets models for the glass pieces of art. After watching the glass blowers work their magic in front of audiences, the pieces they create are available for sale in the display room. Every color imaginable is represented and pieces are made for interior and exterior use. There are also special events and special sales from time to time. But a trip to Wimberley Glassworks and watching one of their live glassblowing demonstrations is an event that will remain in your memory. And there might even be a special piece on display that would look perfect in your home.

The EmilyAnn Theatre and Gardens is a children’s theater founded in 1998, which provides outdoor shows under the stars. Their 12 acres of grounds and gardens are open to the public during the day and host several community events like the Butterfly Festival and their Christmastime Trail of Lights. Most notable is the Shakespeare Under the Stars Program, which the theater’s namesake, Emily Ann Rolling, excelled in as both an actress and costume designer. This is not to mention the student shows at the Wimberley High School’s Lone Star Theater, host of one of the most renown high school theater programs in the state of Texas. he Blue Hole Regional Park is widely considered one of the best swimming areas in the state of Texas. The 126-acre park features one of the most pristine natural swimming holes around with cold, springfed water from Cypress Creek. JACOB’S Well
acob’s Well is the gem of the Texas Hill Country with its enchanting blue-green waters luring in visitors from around the world. The gapping mouth of Jacob’s Wells is roughly 12 feet wide and the waters dive 30 feet, straight down, to the opening of the first
cave. The caves dip into the Trinity Aquifer, which produces the water for the artesian spring. With layered limestone cliffs on one side, a vibrantly vegetated bank on the other and a lively riparian area alongside the creek, the Jacob’s Well Natural Area is a must stop for anyone coming to

Hays County Master Naturalists lead public tours at no charge on Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. departing from the Jacob’s Well Visitors Center. Reservations are not necessary. he majestic Mt. Baldy towers over Wimberley as the city’s most recently added public park. The city of Wimberley purchased the landmark mountain in early 2015 to keep the area open to the public, as it has been for decades. More than 200 handlaid limestone steps adorn the side of Mt. Baldy, which lead to a flat, treeless perch. Once on top of the mountain, the mesmerizing, 360-degree views show all that Wimberley and the Hill Country have to offer.
Park hours, while subject to change, are generally dawn until dusk. Mt. Baldy can be a bit difficult to find, but it’s worth the effort. From the Wimberley Square, turn left on FM 2325. Head just to the outskirts of town, and turn right on Woodcreek Drive. Take an immediate right on El Camino Real and then another right on La Toya Trail. A short drive down will bring you to limited parking at the base of Mt. Baldy.

This land is located immediately east of the Wimberley Square, bordered by Cypress Creek and Old Kyle Road. Emphasizing the preservation and conservation of our natural environment, Cypress Creek Nature Trail Park provides picnic facilities, a water feature, children’s playscape, pavillion, and public restrooms. It has easy access to the Wimberley Square by heading just a few dozen yards down Old Kyle Road. Stop, shop and a take a stroll down Cypress Creek.

Jobell cafe & bistro

ocated just north of Wimberley proper on Ranch Road 12, Jobell Café and Bistro is one of Wimberley’s newest restaurants and features fine dining in a relaxing atmosphere. The food is French countryside at its heart, but updated with Caribbean, Asian and other subtle influences. The owners, David and Jess Bober, are of the hands-on type and rush around making sure that the patrons are happy. David explains it. “Providing nourishment, love of your work, conviviality, and making a living from that is a blessing.” The name Jobell is for their two children Joshua and Isabella.

Jess is originally from Dallas, with Chinese and Cuban parents but met David, a native New Yorker, while living in New York City. They decided although New York was exciting, they did not want to raise their children there. Through luck, after deciding to move to Wimberley, they bought the structure that had been many things before including a wine bar and later, a bakery. To enter Jobell’s, a small bridge is crossed over, with water fixtures underneath including fountains bubbling, the work of local Joe Waldschmidt. Another local, Michael Wilson, crafted the steel railings on the outside. The actual building is very impressive, even more so if you visited before it’s most recent renovation. David’s expertise as a construction manager in New York completely transformed the place, with modern lighting fixtures and mood lighting, creating a relaxing, intimate ambiance. Jess’ passion for cooking comes from having both Chinese and Cuban grandmothers. Cooking with them both inspired her and it remains a big part of her life. A Brazilian-born N.Y. chef worked with Jess on the menu and offerings. “French inspired but a blending of cultures,” is the way that she puts the menu. The food is prepared in a small kitchen, but full time chef, Craig Barlow has everything at

his fingertips. He has a Caribbean connection, having lived in Turks and Caicos. He and owner Jess consult each other on the menu and critique the offerings, constantly trying to improve dishes. Barlow says to “come in, have a wine, dried meat and cheese. We’re not overly foo-foo most of the time.” Starting with the Charcuterie and Cheese Slate, served on a real piece of slate, are artisan made cheeses and meats along with olives and fruit. There’s a soup of the day and different specials offered daily. The menu selections change with the seasons and are bought locally or in Austin. All meats, steaks and chops are hand cut per order. Their wine list is extensive. Jobell’s has live music on most weekends, along with a plan to open for lunch on weekdays. Their hours are Tuesday-Saturday 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. with a Sunday Brunch. Weather permitting; the decks are open for outdoor dining.

P
arking your car and entering Market Days at the north end of the market. Plenty of benches at Lions Field on RR 2325, the first thing and tables are located throughout to help you relax you notice are the wonderful smells teasing or just catch your breath before searching for that your senses. BBQ, tacos, corndogs, popcorn, hot perfect gift or treasure. dogs, hamburgers and other delicacies surround Over 200 Lion’s Club members and other volunyou. Next the booths featuring all sorts of arts and teers are there to help and make sure your visit is crafts, whether antiques, homemade jams, jellies or Story continues on next page » hot sauce, artwork, old comic books, plants, flowers and unusual items are there, just waiting to be taken home. There are booths galore, with over 475 vendors, both from Texas and out of state. There are unimaginable treasures featured for everyone of any age group, boys and girls, men and women. The oldest outdoor market in the state and second largest in Texas, Market Days is an institution in Wimberley, the first Saturday of the month, March through December. The funds that the Lions raise from Market Days are able to enrich local non-profits in the area. Market Days was originally started as a place to sell livestock and locally produced wares on Saturdays on the Wimberley Square. In 1971 it moved down to the Lion’s Field and since has been pleasing locals and visitors alike. Besides bargains and treasures, there’s also live music playing on two different stages. Market Days continued » an enjoyable one and that everyone has a good time. If you have any questions, they are there to answer your questions or point you in the right direction. Some of the groups that are helped by the Wimberley Lions Club are the local Crisis Bread Basket, Meals on Wheels, Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center for victims of family violence, the Wimberley Fire Department, EMS and many more. Also, another way the Lions help Wimberley are the local scholarships that are given to high school seniors attending college, funded in part by Market Days. Getting there is easy, just follow the signs around town, it’s about a mile from the “Y” (the traffic light by Ace Hardware) on RR 2325. Market Days does not charge admission but there is a parking fee. Dogs are not allowed except service dogs and there is even a large item carryout service available for those large purchases. This is a great way to spend a Saturday when you are visiting or staying in the area and to also help the Lions support the community.
