2015 DRIPPING SPRINGS WEDDING GUIDE

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATT MONTALVO

The Wedding Capital M aybe it’s the hill country sunsets, the wineries, the views from the venues. Whatever the reason, one thing is certain, Dripping Springs continues to attract the attention of brides dreaming of their perfect wedding day. Newlywed Melissa Rivera was one of those brides. “The ambiance of the Hill Country is pure romance. We fell in love with Dripping Springs at first site. Our ceremony took place right as the sun was setting behind massive oak trees and it was glorious and breath taking. It felt intimate, private, and romantic,” Rivera said. Rivera and her husband Eric tied the knot in early January at La Hacienda Event Center. “Once we decided Dripping Springs was where we wanted to

I actually planned my wedding in three months and it turned out beautiful and exactly as I wanted. Being a smaller community, I was worried about choices for vendors at the wedding but Dripping did not disappoint. There are plenty of choices for cakes, food, photography, you name it, and many people will deliver at no charge, which was an added

There are excellent restaurants for the rehearsal, bed and breakfasts for your guests, and beautiful views for the wedding. The hill country makes a perfect backdrop for amazing photos as well. WEDDING AT A WINERY

s wine tastings and the dramatic increase of wineries in Central Texas, the venue of a winery may be a place that should get serious consideration. There are many wineries in the area and usually situated in a picturesque valley or breathtaking hillside that are sure to

make gorgeous photographs and the wedding memorable. Add to that a pretty bride and handsome groom and you have a storybook wedding. But there are some things to remember and ask when considering a reception at a winery. Some can offer extravagant package

deals with prices to match, so as with any wedding planning, questions have to be asked and prioritized, probably the number one question being what is the basic price and how many hours are included. This can vary greatly as does the prominence of the winery. The beauty of

Enter the home to be instantly wowed by the elegant decor and handcrafted furnishings found throughout the home. The manor offers 3 bedrooms and two full bathrooms allowing it to comfortably accommodate up to 8 guests. Larger group? No problem! There are 2 additional freestanding structures on site. The adorable Nutty Brown cabin offers 2 bedrooms and 1 full bathroom sleeping 5 guests with ease. And last but certainly not least is Roadrunner’s Bungalow, a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home filled with sophisticated country charm from top to bottom.

Look simply radiant for your wedding day. Schedule a free makeover. Invite your bridesmaids. Your mom. I can even help with great gifts for your wedding party. Call me today.

2015 DRIPPING SPRINGS WEDDING GUIDE the vineyards in the Hill Country, especially outside Dripping Springs, can give a hint of Italy, France or Spain. Beauty has its cost. The season that is chosen, the day of the week and the time of the day, all these have to be taken into consideration as to the price. There is usually a 5-6 hour minimum, which includes cleanup. This question will give you a good starting point to make a final decision. Other questions are: how many guests can be accommodated, parking and restroom facilities, and a host of others. Each individual winery in the Hill Country has their own rules and some even provide wedding planners to make that day oh-so-special. Catering and food choices can be a little limited as the caterer you choose would need to come from a

WEDDING AT A WINERY

list of “approved” vendors list that would be able to use the kitchens at the winery. Or some wineries have their own in-house caterers. Each winery is also different as to bringing in outside alcohol, some allow it, others charge might charge a fee, and others not allowing it at all. This, too is something to investigate. Of course the alcohol that would be served at the winery needs to be investigated as to cost and price breaks. Also how will minors that are attending be handled? Bartenders must be certified by the TABC and with liability insurance. Music at a wedding is also something to think about. Is there a place for a Band or DJ or dancing? That father daughter dance is pretty important. Like any other venue, other questions must be investigated such as contingency plans for bad weather,

what areas are open for the bridal photos. Of course the usual questions as to tables and chairs, availability of the venue the day of the big event, the setup, what is expected of everyone. This will all be included in a written contract with booking fees and deposits, with cancellation cost spelled out in the beginning. The venue of wineries as a wedding venue has grown in recent years just as the number of wineries in the Dripping Springs area has grown. Contacting them early and asking up front about the questions that you have will make your decision that much easier. The usual adage of “no dumb questions” is a good one here when so much depends on your wedding event. 2

Wedding Cakes by: Gary Zupancic Custom cakes by several bakeries in the Dripping Springs area make the long held tradition unique to your wedding.

O

ne of the big parts of the wedding celebration is the traditional wedding cake. Usually in white to reflect purity sharing the cake with family and friends symbolizes prosperity, fertility and happiness. Cutting the cake together is the symbol of their first joint task in married life. Going back to ancient times, in Rome, a small barley or wheat cake was broken over the bride’s head in a symbol of good fortune. Attendees would then gather up the crumbs for good luck and take them home. Guests taking a piece of cake home after the reception continues that tradition. Today, the cake, along with the smaller usually darker in color, groom’s cake, reflects the bride’s and the groom’s unique personalities. If it is a small wedding, the bride’s cake will reflect that. A huge elaborate wedding calls for

something that will elicit “oohs and ahs” from the wedding guests. A new trend when it comes the groom’s cake is to have it featured alone at the rehearsal dinner as the dessert, instead of an afterthought at the wedding. Since traditionally the groom’s parents are the hosts for the dinner the night before the wedding (read - paying for the rehearsal dinner), the cake can feature the characteristics of the groom, whether as a fisherman, hunter or sports fan. Part of the spotlight can be on the groom; as everyone knows the wedding day is all about the bride and the bride only, the bride’s dress, bride’s hair and makeup, etc. The groom is like an afterthought and having the cake at the rehearsal dinner can make him feel special too. As for prices, the cost usually reflects #1 – the servings required and #2 - the ingredients, but more importantly

2015 DRIPPING SPRINGS WEDDING GUIDE

WEDDING CAKES

||

11

#3 - the amount of labor going into the cake. The more tiers and intricacies that go into the final product, the more the cost will be. Since the ingredients in a wedding cake are perishable, all the work has to be done in a very short period of time. This means booking your cake early so that it can be at the top of the list, completed in time if it is going to be elaborate. In the Dripping Springs area there are quite a few bakeries that can meet your expectations, whether simple, elaborate or out of the ordinary. At “Rolling in Thyme and

Dough” Belgian born Fabian Bollum can meet your traditional requests with sumptuous cakes of all kinds. Real butter and eggs are used and gluten free requests can be accommodated. If it is a small wedding, the shop can be reserved, as there is a private area. Elegant and tasty cakes with a European flair are the order of the day. If you are looking for something non-traditional or out of the ordinary “Rock and Roll Cakes” also serves the area. Recently re-located from the East Coast, the 3D type of

cakes are fun. Although the owner, Christy Seguin can do the traditional, she becomes an artist with her medium being sugar and flour, instead of bronze or metal. She has done 3D cats and suspended beer cans floating above a mug for non-wedding events, and tiered cakes with silver and gold leaf for weddings. There are many bakers in the area and are only limited by servings required, price and imagination. 2

omething old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. It’s a tradition many brides love to incorporate into their wedding celebration. While such traditions are here to stay, don’t forget about the trends. Yes, there is always something trending from one season to the next. Jennifer Ashford, a Wedding Planner with Altar Ego Weddings, has been in the business for nine years. She weighs in with her thoughts on what’s trending. “Trends have come and gone

2015 DRIPPING SPRINGS WEDDING GUIDE and some have come back. A good example is a champagne fountain,” Ashford said. “It was once at the height of popularity, then out and now back in. We always have trends. Some are for a year and some last a few. New things pop up all the time. Photo booths were once a novelty and now they're more like a given. Having something interactive for the guests to do is a trend with staying power. My current favorite is caricature artists for the cocktail hour and reception,” Ashford said. So how do you keep up with what’s trending? Well, there are organizations that help with that, one of which, Ashford is currently serving as chair of. “I am the Education chair on the board of directors of AACWP: the American Association of Certified Wedding Planners (http://www. aacwp.com/). The organization's mission is "to educate wedding planners and to promote wedding planning practices of the highest quality to ensure that client expectations are surpassed,” She said. “I am also a training course instructor and mentor within AACWP. We cover topics such as design, details of

organizing the day, client expectations and vendor relationships. I also attend wedding industry conferences such as the Wedding MBA and Wedding Market Expo. These conferences bring in high-profile experts and speakers to share insight and education with the industry,” When Ashford isn’t busy with a conference or training, she goes to social media to see what others are doing across the country. “Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter offer good opportunities to catch trends. Plus, there are always wedding magazines to glean inspiration from.” Some trends may be specific to an area and that’s no different for Dripping Springs. “A trend I enjoy in our area, is that brides like venues that aren't traditional. A ceremony doesn't have to have a built-in altar or ceremony space. A ceremony can be beautiful in the middle of a field. Different venues can be fun and unexpected. There's also a trend of blending styles, such as boho plus glam or rustic plus industrial. The hill country offers plenty of places and vendors to capture these looks,” Ashford said. 2

ou’re engaged! Congratulations! There will be more pictures of you and your groom snapped on your wedding day than any other day in your life. No pressure. If you find yourself asking, “Will my everyday makeup and makeup routine will cut it?” your answer is no. Have no fear. Here are several bridal tips to help you out for creating the perfect wedding day look. First, keep in mind that prepping your skin for your big day begins long before the morning of. Get with an esthetician

and start a routine skin regiment by pampering your skin and shaping those eyebrows. Your skin will be the foundation of your look, and it needs to be solid. If you battle with acne, redness or aging skin, it can all be a slow battle. The sooner you start the better. When in search for a wedding makeup artist, make sure you ask the right questions. Is your foundations waterproof? Do you have waterproof eyeliner, mascara and waterproof eyelid primer? These are so important. Not only is this a day of

beauty but a day of emotion as well. Trust me, there will be good tears. You want your look to last far beyond the nights end and not melt away with the sweat from dancing or tears of joy. If you are considering airbrush makeup, it is also important to make sure the product used is waterproof as well. Thinking of trying out a new hair color or cut? Just keep in mind that it may limit your options for wedding day hairstyles. I recommend growing your hair out until you have done a trial with your hair artist and have an estab-

lished look. Getting a trim every six weeks will keep your hair looking healthy and still allow it to grow. Schedule a trial with your hair artist at least four to five months before your wedding day. I always recommend scheduling your trial for earlier in the day so you can see how your hair will handle the do. PHOTOGRAPHY

2015 DRIPPING SPRINGS WEDDING GUIDE

Preserve Those Memories

Y

our wedding ceremony and reception will go by in a flash. You spend countless hours planning the perfect event and when the day finally arrives it seems to move in a fast-forward pace. Preserving the memories from your special day can help you hold on to the feelings of love, support and excitement that accompany it. So whether you opt for video, photography or another method to record the day’s events, be sure to have a plan ahead of time so you’re not scrambling for ideas at the last minute.

Photographer

While quality photographic equipment is becoming more widely available, it may not be such a good idea to ask your wannabe-photographer cousin to take the photos of your wedding with their SLR camera. A camera takes great pictures just like a kitchen makes delicious food. You need an expert operator to get great results. Shopping carefully for a professional photographer can be one of the best decisions you make. They'll not only be able to get spectacular images from your big day, but they'll also add an air of professionalism and sophistication to your event by following proper etiquette.

Videographer

Video is a powerful option for preserving your wedding memories, as it affords you the opportunity to watch yourself walk down the aisle

over and over again. A professional videographer can set up multiple cameras to capture your wedding and reception from every angle, and even in crisp HD format. Be ready to shell out a big portion of your wedding budget for this option, though. Quality video technicians don't come cheap.

Wedding Journal

From the day of your engagement to the day of your wedding – and even for years to come – a wedding journal is a great way to record your thoughts and emotions related to your marriage. Initially you can use it to jot down ideas for the wedding and reception while also writing about your happiness, excitement

and expectations for married life. Writing in a journal can also serve as a type of release from the stress of planning a wedding.

Disposable Cameras

Want a fun way to capture memories and make your guests a part of the story? Consider using disposable cameras. They are an affordable option for capturing your wedding through the eyes of your guests. Lay two or three cameras on each table and let your friends and family members play photographer for a night. They are likely to offer you snapshots into the parts of the party that you weren’t able to see for yourself, supplementing the traditional images from your professional photographer. 2

Short and Sweet Weddings has a team of seven Officiants / Ministers who conduct weddings all over the Greater Austin area and outlying areas. We'll perform weddings that are faith-based or have no mention of religion at all. We're open to any kind of ceremonial tradition you want or we can do something completely

unique to you. The most interesting But we have to give credit to the place we’ve conducted a ceremony is ever gorgeous sunsets anywhere in probably while hovering over Austin the hill country, including Dripping Springs. Hands down, that is the preferred, romantic backdrop we recommend time and time again. Our officiants are ready to go above and beyond their job title. We’ve been known to hand out programs, arrange chairs, pick up trash, light candles, at no extra charge. It’s important to us that your special day is perfect. THE ORCHARD

2015 DRIPPING SPRINGS WEDDING GUIDE

The Orchard at Dripping Springs by: Bonnie Gonzales

M

ost would agree, there is no shortage of wedding venues in our area, whether it’s an event center, or winery. Perhaps one of the most unique places to hold a wedding is The Orchard at Dripping Springs. It’s the name for the event side of business, at the Texas Hill Country Olive Company. “We have the only certified organic olive orchard in Texas,” Samantha Conley said, Events Sales Manager for the Texas Hill Country Olive Company. “We have beautiful ceremonies out in the orchard which is a great way to represent the Tuscan inspired theme a lot of brides look for. The olive branch is usually a symbol of peace or victory and was historically worn by brides. Also, olive trees can live up to thousands of years old which is a great way to incorporate that into the ceremony and symbolism of a

long lasting relationship.” The grounds consist of sixteen acres of olive trees that can make the perfect backdrop for some memorable photos. “Every picture that I have seen taken at the orchard has been breath taking. The olive trees are actually very beautiful and you can get some wonderful photos. We have three dedicated areas in the orchard for ceremonies and all are beautiful with rolling hills and beautiful sunsets,” Conley said. The Orchard can accommodate up to 150 guests with extra rentals, although Conley said it is best suited for a smaller wedding of 100 or less. “We want to ensure everyone has a spectacular event at The Orchard. We do provide the rental of the venue as well as most of the tables and chairs for seating. We do most of the alcohol through us, and are open to any

vendors as long as they are licensed vendors. I feel it is best for the bride to have choices and get to choose which vendors she would like. We do provide staff and bartenders to ensure the event runs smoothly,” Conley said. She can help with coordinating the details of the event. “I will write the itinerary, contact vendors, run the rehearsal walk through, be there on the big day to run the event, etc. We are also happy to have outside coordinators bring in brides and have events at our venue as well,” Conley said. And don’t forget the wedding favors! A gift of olive oil seems appropriate. “We do have smaller bottles that a lot of couples like to

do as favors for their wedding. We can also do custom labels for the bottles as well. We can do larger sizes and a lot of families like to buy them as gifts for their bridal party or out of town guests to put in their hotel room as gifts,” Conley said. Whether, it’s a wedding, rehearsal dinner, or even bachelorette party… “We do have a ton of bachelorette parties and they are so fun! We have wine tastings as well as small snack plates that the ladies enjoy.” It’s all about the olive and a little Tuscan flair in the hill country, when hosting an event at the Orchard at Dripping Springs. 2

Wedding Rehearsal Y

ou’ve practiced your run through for the big day, now, it’s time for dinner! And if you’re looking for a cozy intimate restaurant setting for your rehearsal dinner, Dripping Springs has you covered. Two of the most well known restaurants for these type of events are Homespun and Creek Road Cafe. Both are located in the heart of Dripping and both offer a romantic ambiance. At Creek Road Cafe, the cuisine is described as fine dining, specializing in seafood, steaks and chops. They have private rooms available with a maximum capacity of fifty five guests. Carly Shroyer, Catering and Events Coordinator at Creek Road Cafe, said they typically work off of the regular dinner menu, but “can offer customized menu options if that is the preference of the customer.” “We produce personalized menus for the guests with the names of the bride, groom and hosts,”

by: Bonnie Gonzales

Shroyer said. The same can be done at Homespun. The restaurant is a bit smaller than Creek Road. Homespun can accommodate a party of forty people. “We can produce a special menu. Our menu is fresh, local farm to table,” Jennifer Walker said, Owner of Homespun. “We can provide anything from chicken fried steak to a filet mignon to fresh caught fish

to wild game. The menu options are unlimited. We also can provide specialty cocktails, wine and beer. Our cocktails are made with fresh berries, juices and herbs.” Either way you go, couples are bound to have a memorable rehearsal dinner at a restaurant you can only find in Dripping Springs. 2

GOURMET TO GO

2015 DRIPPING SPRINGS WEDDING GUIDE

Gourmet To Go

W

ith Austin just down the street, gourmet food trucks are popping up at Dripping Springs weddings at an incredible pace. Baked chicken and roast are being shoved to the side in favor of zesty tacos and sushi. And gourmet trucks not only add diversity to your rehearsal dinner, reception or after-party, they provide a certain novelty and flair that will leave your guests talking about your wedding for years to come. Guest-Centered Menus One of the biggest benefits to having a gourmet truck cater your wedding is menu diversity. Your guests can simply walk up to the truck and place a custom order.

This turns the traditional one-sizefits-all wedding model on its head. Let your guests know prior to the party which company you plan on using. Doing so will allow them time to plan their order ahead of time, making for shorter lines and greater anticipation for your big day. Spring is Best Depending on the size of your guest list, your friends and family members will probably be standing in line for a while waiting to place their orders. That’s why a seasonable spring day may be the best option for hiring a gourmet food truck. Summer heat or the chilly fall air can take away from the enjoyment – no matter how great the food is.

If your party is dampened by an uncharacteristically hot or cold day, be sure to have ice cream cones or hot chocolate as an option for your guests. More Than One Truck? The last thing you want to see is your guests waiting in line for hours. Gourmet food trucks can generally feed hundreds of people, just not in a short amount of time. If you have hundreds of guests coming to your party, you may consider hiring two or even three trucks to keep up with demand. You could even bring in two different companies to give your guests even more options and convenience.2

very bride wants her wedding day to be perfect, and there is no better way to make sure that happens than teaming up with Perfect Day Productions. It’s a one stop shop for everything a couple can want when it comes to audio, video and lighting on your special day. “We can tantalize your senses for everything you hear or see during your wedding,” Eric Morris, co-owner of Perfect Day Productions, said. Upscale or quaint, it doesn’t matter. Eric has spent 25 years in the music industry and produced shows for international, Grammy award winning and “A” list level artists. No matter how big your dreams are, he can find a way to pull it off. “I’ve helped produce some of the biggest shows in the world, and when it comes to your wedding, the care, detail and expertise that we put into those shows is what you can get from Perfect Day Productions,” Eric said. But it doesn’t have to be a grand en-

trance. The most important part is enhancing the moment. “When a couple gets married, they are the rock stars,” Eric said. “It’s their show. It’s their day, and it’s all about exactly what they want. The production we can bring enhances the center of what is going on at every moment.” The best part of Perfect Day Productions is the fact that you can get precisely what you want. Stop in and see a video of the performers they hire and get a sneak peak into what you will see on your wedding day. If you want a small two piece acoustic set for background music or a full on rock back, they can help set you up with specifically what you are looking for. “It’s all about the detail,” Eric said. “When things are going on, the lighting is changing, the delivery of the audio is changing, and dynamically throughout the day, our production can enhance all those feelings. We can shift gears from walking down the aisle to the party mode of a reception to enhance all of those moods.” Do you have a unique color

scheme? That’s no problem. Perfect Day Productions can match your colors and styles with an intricate lighting system. “I can set up lighting that can complement your exact colors,” Eric said. “Some people will bring red, green and blue lights, and when some brides have washes on the wall in the reception area, they inevitably go with a color that contrasts the theme as opposed to exactly the bride's colors. We can match your style exactly.” Perfect Day Productions can capture your every moment on video also. On your wedding day, there are 1,000 memorable moments, but in a few years, you may only remember a few. From the bachelorette party to the after party, they can make sure you can relive those moments through video for years to come. No matter what your production needs are, Perfect Day Productions can match them. “We offer a platinum level experience for a price you can afford,” Eric said. “It’s whatever you need geared toward your budget.” 2
