By: Kristin Voss at Kendall Plantation What is a professional, you ask? Most professionals are “subject to strict codes of conduct, cherishing rigorous ethical and moral obligations. The term also describes the standards of education and training that prepare members of the profession with particular knowledge and skills necessary to perform the role of that profession.” –Thanks, Wikipedia! So, what does this mean for a bride and her family? This means doing a little homework on the vendors, to make certain they are professional. Chances are, your venue sent you home with a list of “preferred” or “favorite” vendors. The venue already did their homework so you don’t have to do it! The truth is, venues are comfortable using certain vendors. They have tested their limits and know their capabilities and motives. The wedding venue you have selected has seen the best of the best and the worst of the worst. Trusting their
opinion is the golden ticket. This doesn’t mean to just go wild and eeny, meeny, miny, moe your vendors, but rest assured, if your venue is recommending them, they have been through the ringer, to get on that recommended list and will do anything to stay on it. Keep in mind: each vendor you select is a representation of the venue. This should be very comforting, knowing that the venue wants only the best in their house, and wants you and your guests to have, a professional and wholesome experience that you deserve. My go-to phrase has always been “you are only as good as the people you recommend.” I stand by that, and I believe most family owned wedding venues would agree. We don’t want our reputation to be saturated with low quality vendors and we especially don’t want our clients walking out with a bad taste because of low quality vendors. You only get to do this once. We want to
help you do it right! No doubt you will have friends and family come out of the woodworks the moment you announce your engagement. All the sudden everyone is a wedding planner, everyone is a DJ, and everyone is a florist. Ha! We get it… You don’t want to spend your lifetime savings on a wedding. But that doesn’t mean you have to enlist your entire neighborhood and church secretary to take care of what a professional should be doing just to save a few dollars! A wedding is a celebration; it shouldn’t be a headache, and you shouldn’t have to worry about anything on your one and only wedding day! Hiring professional vendors is the key to a successful event. Consider hiring a DJ who is a DJ for a living or has 10+ years behind them as an industry professional. Choose someone who will not only play the right songs, but will also be the best emcee for the evening. The FALL 2015
entertainment will make it or break it for the reception. I have seen DJ’s actually drinking on the job. Really? Really? How in the world could a DJ have the nerve to go up to the bar that you paid for and drink all of your hard earned and spent money? You are paying him to be the DJ, not the bartender’s biggest fan. Yikes! Seriously, no professional would ever, nor should ever, drink on the job. The point is, reviews are helpful, but get the scoop from the venue and fellow vendors. The venue sees 100+ events a year and knows how it works and who actually works. Avoid letting your friends and family work their fingers to the bone on wedding day. Tell them it is your gift to them and you ask, they just show up like a guest and enjoy every moment, stress free, with you. Chances are, they are hoping you will say that! From a venue, I promise you will not regret hiring profes-

{Dear Bride}: Please hire a wedding planner. Love , {Your Venue} By Kristin Voss {Kendall Plantation} Let’s face it: weddings are an investment. They are a once in a lifetime magical event for two people to celebrate their union. It is also important to note that no wedding is perfect, nor will it be perfect. It just doesn’t exist. However, one way to get close to perfect is to hire a professional wedding planner.
L
As a venue manager, I have been in meetings with brides where a catering manager tells a client they don’t need a wedding planner. WOW. Those are the
people who have no idea what a professional wedding planner offers to a client. The bottom line: venue coordinators are there because they are hired by the venue to maintain and manage the venue only. They work for the venue and not you. Their main goal is to ensure the facility runs smoothly. So, if you arrive to your venue and all your flower arrangements are wrong and the guests can’t figure out where they are supposed to sit, don’t look at the venue coordinator to help you out because they won’t have a clue whatt you wanted, they th do feedback from nott coordinate! The feedbac with say vendors I have worked dw more times than not, there is a huge difference between weddings with a plannerr vs. ones without. Nott onlyy are the finishing touches finishin design and dd usually better usua but so is the flow of the flo event and ev co communication n bbetween the parties. th Recently, Re Philip Ph Chancellor Cha with 5150 Produ Productions told d me there
10
were 160 registered DJ’s in San Antonio. Really? How is a bride supposed to choose one?! A wedding planner has already developed relationships with vendors they are confident in recommending because they are talented, reliable and the best in the business. Although venues have vendor recommendations, a wedding planner has a vast list of professional vendors that they work with and know. Planners know which ones show up on time, communicate effectively, and are passionate about their services. They are able to look over contracts, negotiate prices, and be the go-between. These are things a venue manager would not necessarily be involved in. The process of vendor research is extremely time consuming but a wedding planner is there to help you decide and bring you the resources that best fit your needs. Many times couples are so worn out with making decisions on their own that by the time the wedding is here, the process is no longer fun. A wedding planner does not make your decisions, but provides you with the tools needed to make the right decisions. They are your planning partners! A few more reasons to hire a planner… You need a mediator. A planner is a good third-party mediator in tricky family situations. It is impossible to please everyone; however, at least a planner can give an unbiased opinion to help navigate problems. continued on page 18

TOP 5 QUESTIONS FOR YOUR DJ
R
Remember how distasteful the music was at your junior high dance? Don’t let people refer back to those days when they’re at your wedding! The DJ is a huge contributor to the over-all atmosphere of your big event, so be sure to pick someone who knows what he or she is doing. Here are the best questions you can ask your music agency:
1
Do you provide a written contract for your clients? Most professional DJs offer written contracts. This is the best way to be sure you’re getting what you paid for. A contract guarantees that the DJ will fulfill his or her requirements and perform up to par.
2
Who will be the DJ at my wedding? Sometimes the person you plan your music details with will not be the DJ who performs at your actual wedding. I highly suggest meeting with the DJ for your event so you can figure out if he or she is the right person. Find out with makes this DJ unique from their competitors. Also, be sure the person’s name is on your wedding contract so you don’t get put with someone else.
Are you experienced with performing at weddings? This is your big day and the last thing you want is a DJ who has never played for a wedding crowd! The amount of weddings your DJ has performed at will be a good indicator of his or her experience. Also be sure to find out what type of training your DJ has been through, whether it be formal training through a company or even a school.
3
4
How many events do you perform at in a day? Sometimes DJs will try to fit as many events in a day as they possibly can. Try to book with a DJ whose first gig of the day is yours. This will assure that the DJ is alive and prepared. You wouldn’t want your DJ to show up tired, or better yet late, from a previous event! Have you played at our wedding venue before? Being familiar with a venue can make the DJs night that much more smooth. It helps tremendously if the DJ knows the procedures and rules, outlets, etc. This will eliminate surprises and additional stressors on your wedding day.

Kids at the Wedding Kids are guests, too, and therefore they deserve to have fun at your wedding! Creating a space for children to hang out will prove the best of both worlds for parents and their children.
Set the table with fun items to include: • Puzzles • Coloring books and crayons • Disposable cameras to send them on a scavenger hunt • Drinks • Snacks
Why not have a children’s menu served to this table or area? Most catering companies offer a cheaper, more kid friendly menu. There is no reason to waste a steak dinner or lobster tail for the kids who may not enjoy it!
DO YOU NEED A REHEARSAL? Do you need a rehearsal? No. Will it put your mind at ease? Yes! There are just so many things to be done the day before your wedding. Last minute details take much longer than a minute and you may begin to feel a bit (or a lot) overwhelmed. There is no rule demanding that you must have a wedding rehearsal, but I encourage you to ask yourself these questions: Are you doing a basic ceremony and keeping it short and sweet? If you answered yes, then there is no need for a rehearsal.
Are you going to stress over the fact that you didn’t rehearse for the wedding? If you answered yes, then you might as well have a rehearsal. The best way to reduce stress is to tackle it. If you are having a formal wedding with readings, or perhaps a candle or sand ceremony, I highly advise doing a rehearsal. You will want your wedding planner or officiant to conduct the rehearsal and go over each aspect of the ceremony with the bridal party from the processional to the recessional. Your coordinator/ planner will ensure that ev-
erything runs smoothly and everyone involved will know in advance where to go and what to do.
Better safe than sorry!

hair As the leaves turn brown, so does the hair! Fall will be filled with various copper tones and melted brunettes. Throwing in light browns will only add definition, which is definitely trending this season. Everyone seems to be done with the simple all-over color… We need definition! Although Texas is notorious for big hair, we may just take it down a bit. Sleek styles are on the rise, as well as low pony tails and knots. Deep parts to one side create a very tailored look. Middle parts are also coming back in full effect.

makeup Natural looks take the front seat, with thick eyebrows and less foundation. The drawn-on look is no more! A more natural filledin brow is the way to go this season. Show us your face, not caked on foundation. Also, leave the contouring to the photo shoots, not for your walk in the park. Fashion in the Big Cities doesn’t always translate well in the Texas Hill Country. With that said, I am going to sprinkle my own little spin on things and mute everything down a bit… Okay, maybe a lot. Ha! A poncho or something to simply throw over yourself as you run out the door is a must-have item this fall. Wearing white after Labor Day is no longer a sin, so an all-white outfit may be something you want to have around for a nice dinner, or even a cute little baby doll dress. A mini skirt with a chunky top is also on trend for a night out. My personal style for fall is leaning toward some tight ripped jeans and a nice loose t-shirt with a soft blazer. I usually roll up my sleeves and pair the outfit with some cute pumps.

Bridal Party 5 Things Your Wedding Photographer Wants to Tell Wedding Cake You Bride and Groom Portraits I write from many of my own personal experiences and the fact that I am a woman has created some interesting wedding day situations. Kindly ask your wedding party to be courteous and cooperative with your wedding vendors, photographers included. There are many times where I have to repeatedly remind groomsmen that I am a vendor working.
(AS TOLD BY A REAL WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER)
By: Marisol Roten
from Marisol Izaguirre Photography
I
I’d love to share a bit of knowledge and wisdom that I have acquired as a photographer in my career over the past few years. Here are five things your photographer wants to tell you…
Where will your wedding cake be located? The wedding cake is sometimes difficult to see. Such beautiful cakes are a big investment. It makes sense to display it in a good place. I have seen beautiful cakes in a poorly lit corner where they are difficult to view and photograph.
Timeline Provide your photographer with a timeline. If you have a planner or coordinator, he or she should provide one to share with vendors. It helps us track the planned events. I can plan for a quick bathroom break without fear of missing any special photo opportunities. No wedding planner? A simple timeline of scheduled events still helps. Your photographer will thank you, I promise.
Lastly, your photographer wants to tell you about how excited he or she is to spend some time alone with you and create beautiful portraiture. Allot some time for bride and groom portraits. A short fifteen minutes or even an hour allows your photographer to work their magic. All those dreamy photos you see on wedding blogs… this is how they happen! That, and well, a little magic and love.
Bridal Details You have spent countless hours finding the perfect dress and accessories. Understandably, these details you spent savings and time on are scattered throughout the bridal suite. Prepare all of your bridal accessories before the photographer’s arrival. Place your collection of items in one location so your photographer can simply start working upon his or her arrival. You’ll end up with beautiful photos of the loveliest details that make up your bridal look.

TIPS FOR F RENTING IT ITEMS
•
Make arrangements early to ensure that you get everything you want for your special day. • Get your wish list together and nail down your items. Most businesses require a nonrefundable deposit to secure the rental items for your event. • Do your research and ask to see their inventory for dishes, tables, linens and furniture pieces. • Confirm that the items are in good condition and check the reviews from previous clients as well. • Ask for a discount if you are renting multiple items from the same place. Don’t be shy. It never hurts to ask! Rentals are not limited to tables, chairs, tents and china. You can also rent music systems, arches, candelabras and more. If the store you chose doesn’t have what you are looking for, ask them where you might be able to get the items from and they will most likely point you in the right direction.

{Dear Bride}: Please hire a wedding planner. cont’d from page 10 Most often than not I hear, “ I have family and friends who have volunteered to help me day-of” ….while this is a nice gesture, unless your family member is a professional wedding planner, it won’t be fine. They are your guests and should not be working on your wedding day. They will be preoccupied with socializing, drinking a little too much champagne, and admiring how beautiful you look, taking hundreds of photos and they are not focused on the important details that make the event run smoothly. In reality, a planner can save you money and time. Not only by putting together a realistic budget, but also in the end, planners have relationships with vendors since they work on many weddings and not just one, so they can use insider deals to save you. There are many wedding horror stories I can share with you, but none of them start with a professional wedding planner. At the end of the day, I strongly encourage my brides to take advantage of what a professional wedding planner is worth.
HAPPY
Let them make your dream a reality; let them be organized, build a timeline, troubleshoot and manage vendors, guests and all the details. Let them save you money. Signature Drinks
S
So let’s get real…. The drinks are almost as important as the dress. One of the most anticipated parts of a wedding is the celebration proceeding the ceremony where guests love to drink and dance. Preparing signature drinks is the key to having beverages ready for your guests right after the ceremony. Doing so will also help keep the bar lines to a minimum. As with a signature lipstick or fragrance, a signature drink will be a defining part of your wedding. It is a way for the bride and groom to share their favorite drink with friends and family. This adds a unique personal touch to your bar menu and will make the event that much more memorable.
2020
Picking the Right Signature Drink • Select your favorite liquor or alcohol. • Take into consideration the vibe of your wedding. • Choosing a drink that is consistent with the theme will make it sound and taste even more delicious! • Keep your budget in mind! Serving a signature drink allows you to provide the liquor or alcohol for the first hour rather than all night.

Food stations are the hottest trend in catering! This option provides guests with more time to mingle, talk and relax instead of the regular prayer and dinner option or cafeteria-style serving. You can mix the best elements of your buffet with the most elegant elements of a sit-down dinner. You will end up with a great presentation and can draw attention to, ingredients and details of the food. Here are some ideas to kick-start your food station brainstorming! Avocado Bar -- Serve avocado halves and allow guests to choose from a variety of toppings, pp g includingg sour cream, dressings, g bacon bits, and d even fillings such as chicken en salad and ceviche. Adding meats will turn n this delicious side dish into a main course. French Fry Station -What is betterr than French fries? You can offer anythingg from waffle fries ies to curly fries, steak fries or skinny kinny fries. Don’t forget rgett that oppings like you can add toppings ketchup, truffle mayo, honey mustard, seasoning salts, and so much more. Carving Station -- This is a delicious way to provide guests with a meat product or main dish for the wedding. Meat options can include a tender loin with a roll and horseradish cream sauce on the side or even pork loin with a side of chutney. Mac and Cheese Bar – You can’t go wrong with Mac and Cheese! FASHION SHOW OPEN HOUSE SUCCESS Hill Country Planning Weddings & Events Magazine hosted its first ever fashion show on Sunday, August 2nd. The Happily Ever After Bridal Affair Fall Fashion Show had an amazing turnout, with over 100 vendors and guests in attendance. The fashion show was a way for the magazine to extend its platform and share ideas with brides and their families so they may have a stress-free, enjoyable and memorable wedding experience. First and foremost, thank you to the Cana Ballroom for sharing your magical setting with us! It is truly a stunning venue for events, and especially wedding receptions. Destiny’s Bridal Boutique provided the exquisite gowns showcased in the fashion show. The bridal
boutique, located in San Antonio, offers the latest trends and largest selections of designer wedding gowns, bridesmaids and flower girl dresses. Simply Serene Salon and Spa, located on Main Street in Boerne, transformed our models with brideworthy hair and makeup. Simply Serene is a full-service salon, offering everything from pedicures and hairstyles to massages and facials. The Flower Shop, which also has its roots in Main Street, donated the elegant flower arrangements. Celebrate your personal style with unified arrangements for everyone in n the wedding party, from the bridesmaids and groomsman to the bride and groom!
We hope the event brought excitement and inspiration for brides and the like. We thank all of our vendors and guests for participating in the bridal affair and fashion show and we look forward for more to come!
Who pays for what?
W
For ages the bride’s family has carried most of the burden of wedding expenses but times have changed. Sit down with the family and talk about who will pay for what so everyone is on the same page and doesn’t have any surprises or high expectations of the other family members. The best way to merge both families is to make everyone feel involved.
A common split of costs is the bride’s family pays for the actual wedding (venue, food, cake, alcohol, vendors, etc.) and the groom’s family pays for the events leading up to the wedding and after the wedding (rehearsal dinner and honeymoon). Find a budget that is comfortable for everyone so you know what range to stay within for the wedding festivities.
The couple ouple and nd d their parents arents should hould d payy for: Weddingg ceremony Reception location Attendants should d payy for: Hair, makeup and spaa appointments Airfare to and from the destination, if needed Formalwear and accessories Guests should pay for: Hotel stay & Airfare

ROOM BLOCKS If you’re hosting out-of-town guests, reserving room blocks at nearby hotels is a great idea. Rather than having your guests calling places in the area, why not have rooms reserved for them at an even better rate? Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone were in one or two locations rather than 10 different areas? Before selecting the hotel, research what is close to your venue, price point and what the place has to offer. You should look at selecting two room blocks with one being a cheaper option that may not have as many amenities as the more expensive one that might have more to offer for your guests. Once you select the locations for your guests to stay, negotiate a contract with the hotel. Can they give you points on your rewards card for the rooms? Will
they offer a suite or complimentary room for the bride and groom or parents? What extra things can they offer to make your guests feel welcome? The best way to do the room block is to do a courtesy room block and sign a contract to reserve rooms for your guests. Doing so will ensure you are not putting down a payment or being held liable for the cost if they are not booked. Most will hold, say, 20 rooms for a select amount of time and then after a certain date, will release those rooms for others to rent. Schedule your room blocks early to give your guests time to get in the reservations. Posting updates on your wedding website is the best way to keep guests informed on directions, room blocks and details of the event.

Experience… “As a child, the owner of Cherokee Rose saw the potentiall of this old family ranch. Watching, learning and helping his grandmother restore this old settlement homestead for years (along with the rest of the family), an idea emerged. d. An idea that if folks could just experience this place; touchh the stones in the fachwerk walls, smell the harvests, hear the deer, feel the water polished stones in the Guadalupe, that at they would be taken by a feeling that so many have been taken with, all the way back to our German and Cherokee ancestors. Our mission is to pay homage to all that gritty, wonderful, dangerous, hard, beautiful history by awakening all of our guests to that wonderful story... and help them create stories of their own.” -The Cherokee Rose Mission From www.txcherokeerose.com
Hill Country Weddings and Events Magazine would like to send Cherokee Rose a warm welcome to the wedding industry! We are thrilled for future collaborations with this beautiful venue, including the Open House on November 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. Come experience the 1800’s original wood barns with weathered tin roofs and cypress trees along the Guadalupe with us! For additional information please contact info@hillcountryweddingsmagazine.com or thevenue@txcherokeerose.com.

Hello, Honeymooners! I I think I’ll get a little up close and personal for this fall’s top travel pick! My husband and I decided to celebrate our anniversary at the Zoetry Villa Rolandi in Isla Mujeres, which is a resort in the Caribbean not far off the Yucatan Peninsula Coast. What I’m about to describe is not a daydream! The resort staff picks you up in their private yacht from Cancun, where you are immediately greeted with a cold towel and even colder beverage of your choice. Yes, please! You are then taken directly to an all-inclusive resort. Every detail is top-notch, creating an atmosphere of luxury and relaxation. Not only is the resort incredible, but the island is quite the experience as well! Options are endless but here are some of my top recommendations: • • • • •
honeymoon Publisher’s Pick for a Fall Honeymoon
Swim with whale sharks, Go deep sea fishing and snorkeling in the crystal clear waters Indulge in a massage on the beach, Drive around the town in a golf cart, and Treat yourself to some street food!
Is your pocket book forcing you to snap back to reality? Fear not! This whole trip is more than reasonably priced. Not only are the flights cheap, but there is also a direct flight right out of San Antonio, which makes the whole process much more smooth. The private island is safe and secluded. The weather is always great. The people are amazing. The environment is ideal. There are so many fun things to do for couples.
“Thank you to Mexico for reminding me how u beautiful and sweet you are! We will definitely be coming back!””
Enjoy!

HOME PURCHASE By: Dallas Pipes, Realtor One of the most important life decisions, other than the person you choose to marry, is when and where to buy a home. The Texas Hill Country is a perfect place to live and raise a family. It boasts beautiful scenery, pleasant weather, friendly people and nationally ranked schools. The homes you will find, anything from, a closeknit neighborhood, to wide open ranches. Although the home buying process can be overwhelming, it doesn’t need to be. Hiring an agent with energy, character and integrity will alleviate undue stress. A reputable agent will be there with you every step of the way to explain the tax benefits of owning your own home, as well as explaining the various energy cost and savings on each home and just being well-versed in the entire buying/selling process. Key Points: • Do not over-buy on your first home • Know your price range and stick to it • Know what your payment will be with all the added expenses • Choose a home/community which you feel will have future • Desirability Your home is a place you will come home to after a long day of work or play. You want it to be a relaxing, enjoyable place, not a a stress inducer. Just like in your relationships, communication is golden.
You want to communicate well with your new home team, REALTOR®/lender/family. All need to be on the same page. This is something that is going to need attention so pick your team wisely!

Everlasting E Love
By Crystal Wiedenfeld
A
rne Royalty! R A Love Storyy ooff Boerne Hi Countryy Weddings and Eve Hill Events M had the he privilege privil to hear he Magazine rst hand the true tru lovee story s y of first rne Royalty, Royalt “John E Eddie” Vo Boerne Vogt V and his beloved, Neldaa Louise Vo Vogt. John Eddie was born in an old house on Main Street in Boerne. He met his wife of 63 years in the same town. It all began when he couldn’t help but be curious about the beautiful girl he would see walking back and forth from school. John Eddie was the most eligible bachelor in town before Nelda came along. He owned a successful general store and was an independent gentleman. Nelda wasn’t a force to reckoned with, as she was quite an independent character herself. She was strong and athletic and Eddie decided Nelda was going to be his wife. Period. A few short months after they met, John Eddie made that come true. Nelda said he wouldn’t be able to find anyone else to put up with him so the two were wedded on December 24, 1951. John Eddie was a devoted businessman who had several long-lasting careers, including a deputy sheriff, constable and rancher. He also takes great pride to this day for his title of Scout Master for 20 years with Eagle Scouts.
But that’s not his greatest achievement, to say the least! The couple went on to have five wonderful children together. The roles have nearly switched, as the children have done much to help the elderly couple through sickness and the like. John Eddie and Nelda also have eight grandchildren and 10 (yes, 10!) great grandchildren. Both John Eddie and Nelda are still involved in the Boerne community to this day. They love how the small town, where everyone knows each other, is so friendly and respectful. This is something that John Eddie hopes to preserve through his chivalrous ways. When we asked for the secret to a long-lasting marriage, John Eddie said to open your bible together when looking for answers. He said this is one of the best practices to find your way. Things will not always be perfect but you can work through them.
The Vogt’s married . DECEMBER 24, 1951 and fulfilling so never forget to cherish your significant other, friends, family and children. They are the biggest blessing God could ever give you.
This love story shows us the value of patience and hard work. If you stay true to your morals, good things will eventually come. What an amazing couple the Vogts are! We laughed throughout their entire story. I can see why they have been together for 63 years… What a fun couple! Life is about love. Love makes our journey so much more meaningful FALL 2015
