OT LONG after the rain stopped falling in Bryan on November 22, 2014, and the sting of the upset loss against Spring HS wore off, the football staff at Lake Travis HS went back to work. Expectations were for a State Championship, as numerous key players would be returning for the 2015 season. On offense, QB Charlie Brewer would be taking the reins and hoping to follow in the footsteps of the great QB’s of the past: Todd Reesing, Garrett Gilbert, Baker Mayfield, and his brother, Michael Brewer. WRs Cade Green and Maleek Barkley, RB Abe Willows, OL Jeff Gibbs, Griffin Lemley, and Brendan Jaimes were also returning for the Cavaliers. On defense, Lake Travis was expected to be very strong. Defensive linemen Sammy Ochoa, Garrett Womack, Tevin Paul, and Jayden Hutchings, along with key members of the secondary including Austin Hiller and Tanner Bush, were all returning and would be tasked with continuing the tradition of excellent defensive play. Offseason workouts built the Cavaliers bigger, stronger and faster than ever before. Grueling conditioning in summer Texas heat and a semi-final appearance in the state 7 on 7 tournament put all the pieces in place for another memorable season. This team of Cavaliers adopted the motto of Leave a Le6acy, replacing the G with a 6, the goal being Lake Travis High School’s 6th state championship. Officially, the season began August 10th. The players reported at 7am sharp, received their equipment, and began the first of many practices leading to a state championship appearance.

The opening game took place on the road against state-ranked Waco Midway. The Cavs battled to a 48-24 victory, a solid win considering that Midway beat LT in 2014 and went deep into the playoffs. By all accounts this was a great opening victory, especially considering LT outscored Midway 31-14 in the 2nd half. Copperas Cove traveled to LT the very next week. Cove is a traditionally strong football program boasting several alumni in the NFL, including Heisman winning QB Robert Griffin III. However, Cavalier QB Charlie Brewer dissected the Cove Defense through the air, completing 22 of 28 passes for 4 touchdowns while RB Abe Willows rushed for 159 yards on 15 carries, another dominant victory.
DISTRICT As expected, the Cavaliers dominated their district opponents. Impressive victories over Hays, Del Valle, Lehman, Anderson and Austin High put Lake Travis on a collision course with rival Westlake. Both Lake Travis and Westlake sported high scoring offenses and solid defenses. Coming into the game, both teams were ranked in the Top 10 in 6A in the state. Many predicted a Westlake victory behind University of Texas commit QB Sam Ehlinger. The forecasts called for steady rain. Conditions held off during the game which allowed both offenses to be put on display. Lake Travis took the opening

kickoff and scored on its 4th play, a TD pass from Charlie Brewer to TE Cade Brewer. The defense held Westlake on the first several drives, recovering a fumble in the red zone when Sam Ehlinger fumbled the exchange with his running back. The Cavaliers were on the march. RB Abe Willows rushed for a 25 yard gain, then the unthinkable happened; a simple pass from QB Charlie Brewer and an awkward landing resulted in a torn ACL for standout RB Abe Willows. The Cavaliers lost their senior leader and best offensive player in the 1st quarter. Adversity reveals character, and the Cavs would not be denied, especially in a game as important as this one. The Cav defense stifled Ehlinger, holding Westlake to 14 points in the game, the last touchdown coming in the game’s final seconds. The Battle of the Lakes would once again go in LT’s favor 35-14, the 8th consecutive win in the series. The joy of victory was met with an uncertain future. The day after the game, news broke that DT Sammy Ochoa had been involved in a car accident, hydroplaning out of control on Hwy 71. The initial news was grim, he was alive, but severely injured, his season over. The rollercoaster ride of the 2015 season would continue. Hours after beating Westlake, the Cavaliers would have to replace not only their leading offensive player but also their most dominating defensive player. Injuries are a part of the game, but the team would need to quickly adapt to the loss of such valuable players for the remainder of the season. The Cavs closed out Bowie and Akins to capture their 5th consecutive district championship.
PLAYOFFS The Cavaliers first round opponent was decided by a coin flip. In a moment out of Texas HS Football lore, the head coaches of Stony Point, McNeil and Pflugerville met and flipped coins. The odd man out would, by rule, be in the playoffs. Pflugerville won the honors and Lake Travis would have the opportunity to avenge a playoff loss several years prior. The Panthers proved to be no match for the Cavaliers. RB Santiago Villegas and Maleek Barkley shouldered the load in replacing Abe Willows. DT Corbin Pierce and Scott Cummings would fill the enormous void left by Sammy Ochoa. The Cavaliers were off and running toward a state championship. The Area round matched LT with Spring Westfield. By all accounts, this would be LT’s toughest test to date. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine, the bible of Texas HS football, predicted prior to the season that these two teams would meet, just not this early in the playoffs. The site was set, Brenham HS stadium. The conditions couldn’t have been any worse; a 35 mph wind would greatly affect any passes and prove daunting to drive into. Special Teams would prove critical. Lake Travis drove early for a TD into the wind. Later in the game, a punt by Hudson Fife, landed and then was pushed by the wind another 30 yards, pinning Westfield close to its own end zone. Four plays later, Austin Hiller blocked the punt, earning a safety and 2 points for Lake Travis. Late in the game, with Westfield driving for the tying score, Safety Robert Rayos intercepted a pass sealing the victory. Despite several Division I players for Spring Westfield, including All-American defensive Tackle Ed Oliver, the wind was the determining factor. Lake Travis scored twice going against it, Westfield did not. A 28-21 victory pushed the Cavaliers past the Area round with an upset victory and set up a rematch with Waco Midway. Midway proved to be little match for the Cavaliers, who dominated in the run game as RB Maleek Barkley shined for 4 TD’s. A 55-14 win, and the Cavaliers moved on to face Rockwall. Boasting an impressive offensive, Rockwall proved to be a solid test. At this point in the season the Cavs were firing on all cylinders. Despite injuries to leading receiver Cade Green, the Cavaliers rolled to 45-24 win at Texas A&M’s Kyle field. The next opponent for the cavs would be Mansfield HS. Mansfield RB Kennedy Brooks wowed scouts all year and led the DFW area in rushing with over 3,000 yards. Mansfield’s ground game would prove to be formidable. Lake Travis seized the momentum after the first quarter, holding Brooks in check, and won going away 49-21. The Championship game was set, Lake Travis vs Katy. Katy was predicted to win state prior to the beginning of the season. They returned numerous starters from a team that had played in the state game the previous 3 years in a row. They had pedigree, they had talent, they destroyed their opponents all year. Katy possessed the greatest defense Lake Travis has faced in any of its 5 state championship seasons, only surrendering 50 points in its first 15 games.

Throughout the previous championship seasons, community support reaches its peak during the departure for the stadium. The Cavs, aboard chartered buses, exited the school and drove down the Galleria main street to cheers, pictures, signs, and other shows of support. Spirit and confidence was high. Houston’s NRG stadium was situated next to the Astrodome. Lake Travis entered underneath and traveled to the locker room. It was there that they had their final position group meetings and waited. There were delays due to the Westlake-Galena Park North Shore game which had gone into overtime. Despite being a bitter rival, the Cavaliers were largely rooting for Westlake as they watched the TV monitors in the locker room. Westlake came up short, and it was time for the Cavaliers to take the field. They exited the dark tunnel to cheers and support from the forty-three thousand fans that were in attendance. Kickoff came soon after, the game was on. Despite solid defense which included interceptions from Robert Rayos and Austin Hiller, the Lake Travis offense came up short time Semi-Finals Champions and time again and were only able to muster a single touchdown. There was joy in defeat. The Cavaliers had proved that they could compete at the highest level. Many players realized not just how phenomenal the Katy Tigers were but how special the moment was, and they took the opportunity to make memories with their teammates for the last time. Tears were shed, but the Cavaliers had made their school and community proud. Katy finished the season ranked #1 in the US and State, Lake Travis #2 in State and #9 in the nation. At this moment, the Lake Travis Football program is once again gearing up for another state run in the 2016 season. Hopes should be high; the offense is returning 9 starters from the Championship Game. The defense has key members back, a few holes to fill, but capable players waiting for their opportunity to shine.

O MANY of the dozens of nonprofit events I attend each year are presented to address suffering as it manifests itself in our community: mothers and fathers, who never smoked a cigarette in their lives, die from lung cancer; wounded veterans return home as paraplegics with multiple amputations and impaired cognitive function. Suffering exists, and the compassionate gear for battle. But it is the suffering of children that seems most difficult to witness. Perhaps keynote speaker Scott Frazier put it most succinctly, “When your children hurt, you hurt…and you would do anything on earth to relieve their suffering.” Scott and Chelsea Frazier spoke at the Dell Children’s Gala of their little daughter, Davy, who was born several months ago with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia, a malformation of the diaphragm that allows the abdominal organs to push into the chest cavity, thus hindering proper lung formation. Davy was very, very sick, and the doctors and nurses and teams of specialists at Dell Children’s Hospital geared up to battle for Davy’s life. It was touch and go. Scott recounted that, during their stay at the hospital, he didn’t want to go to sleep because he was afraid that when he woke up, Davy wouldn’t be there. The difficulty was to try to build Davy’s strength, in her very fragile

condition, so that she would be able to endure the surgery that was absolutely necessary for her survival. Against all odds, Davy’s team at Dell Children’s accomplished the miraculous, and restored the possibility for the Fraziers to reconstruct their dreams of a future with Davy. What these two parents endured seems similar to post-traumatic stress, yet there is a sense of optimism that they will recover a sense of equilibrium. In the meantime, their words of praise for the care, comfort and compassionate treatment they received at Dell were effusive. A Hidden Austin HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN THE CITY

W
HEN WE think of human trafficking, we might be inclined to picture far-away locales—seedy cities in countries that are notorious for crime, brutality and lack of human rights. It may, therefore, surprise many to know that the problem exists right here in Austin. According to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center, Texas ranked second highest in the country in 2015 in terms of number of tips reported to their hotline. The Central Texas Coalition Against Human Trafficking states the following: Texas is vulnerable due to our proximity to the border and number of interstate highways that act as routes to other states. The organization also claims that trafficking involving sweat shops, domestic servitude and brothels have been found inside Austin city limits. Sgt. Robert Miljenovich, head of the Austin Police Department Human Trafficking and Vice Unit, could not quantify how widespread the problem is in Austin, but did confirm that the problem does exist. Miljenovich describes most of the cases in Austin as sex trafficking cases involving victims who are from the Austin area or brought here from other cities within the United States. “The commercial sex industry is pretty active through online advertisements for sex, through businesses like illegal ‘massage parlors’ or prostitution activity in gentlemen’s clubs,” says Miljenovich. “And there is still what people would think of as traditional prostitution, out on the street. Any time you have that environment, you have the opportunities and possibilities for others to be exploited and manipulated, forced and coerced into being sold for sex.” According to Miljenovich, these cases involve both juveniles and adults, although his department is seeing an increase in cases involving younger victims. In October 2015, Operation Cross Country, a nationwide sex trafficking sting led by the FBI with participation of local, state, and federal law enforcement resulted in the recovery of 149 sexually exploited children and the arrests of 150 pimps. This same operation, Miljenovich confirms, led to multiple arrests in
Austin, including arrests for prostitution, purchasing prostitutes and promoting prostitution. He confirmed that, while none of those charged with prostitution were juveniles, many were females between the ages of 18 and 21 who described years of prostitution before adulthood. Miljenovich describes those lured into sex trafficking as victims with particular vulnerabilities, including past trauma such as sexual or physical abuse, a history of substance abuse or lack of family structure. These victims are often searching for someone to lean on—“a father figure,” he says. The perpetrators, according to Miljenovich, have incredibly varied backgrounds, fitting no cookie-cutter profile except that they all share a tendency to be highly manipulative and controlling. Surprisingly, Miljenovich says the vast majority of the victims are targeted, not by physical force, but by seemingly harmless, often friendly, exchanges over the internet, on Facebook and other forms of social media. This disturbing fact leads Miljenovich to urge parents to always be aware of their children’s communications and monitor who they are communicating with and what types of messages they are exchanging. When asked how his unit is combating the problem, Miljenovich points to a two-pronged approach that involves enforcement action targeting the commercial sex industry coupled with increased efforts to get community members and non-government organizations involved in the fight. Miljenovich applauds efforts of local organizations like The Refuge Ranch who hope to provide support and shelter to victims, saying there is a need for similar projects, but efforts are not easy, are often expensive to run and require plenty of dedicated people. The Refuge Ranch, set upon 50 acres just outsides of Austin, will provide long-term, holistic care to girls between the ages of 11 and 17 who have been rescued out of sex trafficking. The ranch is an extension of The Refuge DMST (Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking), a faith-based, non-profit organization founded by Brooke Crowder. “Law enforcement alone cannot solve this problem or put an end to it,” says Miljenovich. “The community, all of society, needs to step up and say ‘This is wrong, selling people for sex or labor, forcing people into slavery is wrong and we’re not going to support that.’”

HE LAKEWAY Resort and Spa hosted the 2015 Lakeway Police Foundation Christmas Gala, sponsored by Lexus of Austin and Lakeway. Each year, the attendance grows at this annual benefit that provides a critical source of funding, outside the City of Lakeway’s budget, to support the officers that protect and serve the Lakeway community. The Police Department of the City of Lakeway has distinguished itself with programs that place it among elite departments, not only in Texas but across America. High profile incidents across the nation have many departments investigating the merits of installing cameras on their patrol cars. The Lakeway Police Department installed cameras on its patrol cars four years ago, and Chief Todd Radford routinely gets phone calls from police chiefs from distant cities asking him about the Lakeway experience and if he would send them information about the policy. Similarly, every member of the Lakeway Police Department must pass a fitness test. This policy also sets the Department apart from its peers, and it was funds raised by the Police Foundation that helped outLynn Lollar, Board Member, Lakeway fit the department’s gym. S FAR BACK as 2013, Forbes Magazine reported the “grim milestone” of 1 million, non-fatal injuries to Veterans in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The seriousness of these injuries would have killed soldiers on battlefields in WWII, Korea or Vietnam. Advances in the speed and effectiveness of medical technology on the battlefield have saved hundreds of thousands who would never have survived their injuries. That consequence has left a Veterans’ Administration staggering under the weight of caring for wounded warriors with monumental needs. Eric Edmundson’s father cannot say enough good things about the treatment his son received at Walter Reed Army Medical Center after the Stryker vehicle he was driving hit an IED in Iraq, but the post-discharge experience was a nightmare. The Army not only wanted to transfer Eric to a nursing home (and predicted Eric would never emerge from a persistent vegetative state) but also wanted to discharge Eric. His family was incredulous. It was clear that the VA was not going to meet Eric’s needs. Eric’s dad, Ed, educated himself and fought to insist that his son remain on active duty, and, in the end, won the right for treatment from the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. 2015 H.O.W. New Year’s Eve Benefit Gala Once in the care of the RIC, Eric began making steady progress. Amazingly, Ed discovered that, among the 27,000 brain-injured soldiers wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, Eric was the only soldier at the #1 rehabilitation institute for brain injuries in the United States. It was then that Ed decided that their struggle should be an advocacy for all grievously wounded soldiers. “We’re disappointed at how the system has built up such a bureaucratic labyrinth that these soldiers can’t get—when they come back broken and challenged—they can’t get what they need,” he added. Alan “Doc” Babin, Jr., a combat medic with the 82nd Airborne Division, and his family share a similar story. Grievously wounded when he rushed to help a fallen comrade, Alan endured 2 years of hospitalization and 70 surgeries. His family has been tireless in their efforts to give Alan the care he needs, and it was this effort that led Rosie Babin to found Held Our Wounded. Knowing firsthand the daunting challenges of advocating with the military and with the Veteran’s Administration for the care wounded veterans need, Rosie Babin founded an organization to raise funds to help the servicemen and women whose needs so often fall into a care gap. Chaired by Dottie Stevenson, this third annual Help Our Wounded New Year’s Eve Gala was well attended by an enthusiastic group of patrons. ACH YEAR, I come away from yet another Beauty of Life event profoundly moved by speakers whose stories so brilliantly encircle the heartbeat of the hospice movement. Their comments are always different, yet each says something unique in the litany of end-of-life stories. Keynote speaker, Cheryl Strayed drew a verbal portrait of the great love she had for her mother, Bobbi. Married to a man Strayed describes as abusive and tyrannical, Bobbi had three children by age 26. They lived in very rough circumstances, on the outback of community life, in a home with no electricity or indoor plumbing. She often said to Cheryl, “We aren’t poor because we’re rich in love!” Cheryl described her mother as her friend, and her hero and “someone who loved me with wild abandon.”

She recounted how Bobbi said wistfully, “I’ve always wanted to go to college.” And Cheryl thought to herself, “NO WAY you’re coming with ME!” Cheryl’s initial resistance gave way to the deeper truth. “We both went to college, and our worlds opened up.” Cheryl and her mother both transferred to the University of Minnesota when Cheryl was a sophomore. When Cheryl was a senior, her mother was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer. She died seven weeks later, in the hospice wing at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth. Loss comes in so many flavors…from the long-term diagnosis of number of months left to live, to loss that is shockingly sudden, abruptly slicing through and cruelly truncating the rhythms of life. For Cheryl, life as she knew it had ended. Her conviction that she could not live without her mother led to three and a half years of rage and grief and self-destructive behaviors. Her decision to backpack by herself, with no experience, along the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State was her attempt to honor her mother’s memory and to figure out who she was without her. When asked what the difference is between hiking and backpacking, she said, “It’s like the difference between babysitting twins and giving birth to them.” Her epic story about turning toward that great loss and bearing the unbearable (like the 1 ton backpack) is told in her memoir Wild. And Hospice, too, helps those it serves to bear the unbearable, to move through the hard journey, knowing they are not alone. As Strayed remarked, “Death and grief have their own beauty, for grief is love, nothing more than love.”

R
ISKS OF FALLING are commonly associated with aging, but the explosive increase in falls has mushroomed into a serious public health crisis in the U.S. According to AARP, the number of deaths from falling doubled between 2000 and 2013. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the costs of falling are over $30 billion each year, and could potentially double by 2020. For adults ages 45 to 64, as well as adults 65+, falls are the number one reason for emergency room visits. There are a variety of factors that can increase the risk of a fall. While younger adults tend to fall outdoors (i.e., off a ladder, exercising, tripping), older adults tend to have an increased fall risk as a result of diabetes, arthritis, and inner–ear problems. Since the Federal government provides little support, fall prevention has become the responsibility of community groups, hospitals, and state and local agencies, according to the AARP. A number of issues stand in the way of health care providers making fall prevention a priority. One such issue is that providers are already busy and overwhelmed. Further, falling is often a byproduct of other chronic health issues. Often, doctors are not always able to determine effective ways to approach falling with their patients. For these reasons, Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths, & Injuries (STEADI), a program established by the CDC, created procedures where health care providers assess fall risk and suggest treatment. As a result, as the AARP reported, the number of ER visits from falling decreased 12% in the first 18 months of screening, and hip ad leg fractures declined 20%.
There are common “danger zones” where one needs to take more care and become more aware. Black ice, bath tubs, getting up too quickly, slick floors, loose rugs and high-heel shoes are common ones. Thankfully, there are several exercises one can do to improve balance. Balancing on one foot, walking heel to toe along an imaginary line, sitting and standing, and using balance balls or boards. Classes such as tai chi, Pilates, dance and yoga also help improve balance. No one is exempt from this epidemic crisis, and falls can happen to anyone at anytime, including celebrities. President George H.W. Bush, Steven Tyler, Billy Graham, Pope Benedict XVI, Paula Abdul, Barbara Walters, Hillary Clinton have all sustained injuries as a result of a fall. Others weren’t as lucky: Ann B. Davis, Robert Freeman, and Dr. Robert Atkins all passed from injuries related to falling. It’s safe to say that we have all been impacted from the effect of falling. Each of us knows a family member or a friend who has sustained horrific injuries from falling.

STABLISHED 13 years ago, The Rise School of Austin was founded to provide the highest quality early childhood education for all children…gifted, traditional and developmentally delayed…in an inclusive setting, where individualized learning techniques enable every child to achieve his or her maximum potential. This year’s Heart & Soul Event honored Donna Stockton-Hicks who, along with Cindy Lind, joined the Rise Board when the school was in its infancy, struggling to gain a financial foothold to support its mission. From its humble beginnings 13 years ago, in a small church in Northwest Austin, Rise School immediately faced daunting financial challenges. As Cindy Lind detailed in her tribute to Donna Stockton-Hicks, building a sustainable revenue stream was of paramount concern. “Donna and I decided to put together an event that appealed to women. And, what makes a woman happy? SHOES! And thus was born the Rise School of Austin’s Heart & Sole Event.” Donna graciously opened the doors to her beautiful home, where she hosted five Heart & Sole events. And then there was the year 150 women were expected for a garden party, and it was snowing outside. That was also the year Donna threw up from anxiety! Although that was the last Heart & Sole event held at Donna’s home, her interest in the Rise School and its children has remained unfailing. She served on the Board of Directors for eight years and continues to serve now as a Trustee. She is a tireless volunteer and a generous donor, each year asking for the financial support of others after making a large donation of her own. And with that, Cindy Lind said, “She is this year’s Heart & Soul Honorary Chairwoman.” Following Donna’s heartfelt remarks, guests were enchanted by the highlight of the event, the Rise children’s fashion show, emceed by Matt Sweeney.

ATTI PIESZCHALA took these pictures from the deck of the Travis County Sheriffs’ Office Lake Patrol Munson landing craft. Bright reflections of color from this giant flotilla of boats created a dramatic contrast with the night sky and the dark water. Participants donated an unwrapped toy to the TCSO Brown Santa Toy Drive. The parade began at Rough Hollow and ended at the Sail & Ski Yacht Club and Marina where the awarding of prizes and an Ugly Sweater Contest at Sundancer Grill capped off the evening. There were no losers, however, and the best prize of all was all the water in Lake Travis! Judge Rita Radford, making her list!

Story by Cathie Parssinen Although the formula is not precise, analysts of real estate often talk about a balance in the number of listings in any given market that determines the health of the market. It is often said that inventory that provides fewer than six months’ worth of listings is a seller’s market, whereas inventory that offers more than six months’ worth of listings is a buyer’s market. Translate that concept to an analysis of the demographic of any given area necessary to support the profitability of a given number of restaurants. Jane Ko (known as KoKo) writes a food and travel blog called A Taste of KoKo, and, according to her research, over 100 new restaurants opened in Austin in 2015. The greater Lakeway and Bee Cave area can’t compete with those numbers, but this area also experienced new restaurant openings in 2015, with more slated for 2016 and beyond. ANDLELIGHT RANCH is a non-profit founded by a Central Texas family that provides unique outdoor experiences for special needs and at-risk youth. Located between Lago Vista and Marble Falls, this magical 40-acre Ranch features a challenge course, equine therapy, a sustainable food program, and other nature-based programs. All of the main facilities are wheelchair and mobility-aid accessible. Dress by Candlelight is the Ranch’s largest fundraiser. Presented by HEB and Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC at Fair Market on East 5th Street, the event supports the nature-based programs offered to 30 Central Texas community groups, nonprofits and schools. This year, Dress by Candlelight presented an interactive fashion experience. Guests were able to see and touch the clothes while visiting with the models positioned in four different, museumstyle vignettes that showcased specific programs at the Ranch. Among these were sustainability and care of the earth, the beauty of nature, wide open spaces that include vast skies and starry nights, and last but not least, Reese’s Treehouse. This magical tree house, one of the largest in the country, is one of the most unique features at the Ranch, providing 500 square-feet of wheelchair-accessible ramps and shelters where children can play, relax and experience nature in fun, creative ways. AURA BERNSTEIN, daughter of Robert and Janet Bernstein of Stamford, Connecticut and John Parssinen, son of Jon and Cathie Parssinen of Vallejo, CA and Lakeway, Tx, respectively, were married on Sunday, August 16, 2015 at The Riverview, in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. Graduates of the 2007 class of Ohio Wesleyan University, Laura and John met freshman year and quickly became kindred spirits. Hailing from Greenwich, Connecticut, Laura is an avid tennis player, lettering all four years at OWU. After the nuptials, they escaped to the lovely Pacific Northwest where they toured the lush, temperate rainforests and sleepy seaport towns of Vancouver Island. The Canadians were way too nice, the landscape was picturesque, and the salmon was savory. Today Laura is a practicing clinical psychologist at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, and John works in higher education at the City University of New York. Laura and John are grateful to all the family members and friends who were able to join them for the several days of wedding festivities at the scenic river town of Hastings-on-Hudson. The two look forward to many years of happiness and lop-sided tennis matches.

Sunset at Finlayson Point in Beacon Hill Park, Victoria BC. Our last night of the honeymoon, spent watching the sun set over the Juna De Fuca Straight, right across the sea from Washington State, US. Vancouver sunsets are some of the most amazing we’ve seen yet.
Hiking along the inspiring “artist loop” section of the Wild Pacific Trail in Ucelet, a remote fishing village within Vancouver Island’s Pacific Rim National Park. The Park protects some of the most magnificent white sand beaches and rain forests in North America.
Botanical Beach, Port Renfrew, a rugged west coast village on Vancouver Island, known for it’s beautiful natural scenery. We started our day exploring the tidal pools on dramatic rocks that jut into the Juan de Fuca straight. We spent three glorious nights at the luxurious Wickinissh Inn, located on Chesterman Beach, Tofino. Each day began with walks along the white sand beach, watching as the fog burned off and letting fresh Pacific breezes dissolve every thought and worry. In this picture, we are saying goodbye to this magical coastal rainforest resort before making our way down to Port Renfrew.

We spent two nights in this magical Yurt at Soule Creek Lodge, a remote bed and breakfast opened by chefs who provided delicious home cooked meals amid the quiet natural beauty of the mountains. Soule Creek offered easy access to the remote natural beaches and national parks of the “rugged west coast” of Vancouver Island. Rock skipping at the most western beach in the City of Vancouver. This rocky beach is l on the campus of the University of British Columbia, located on Pacific Spirit National Park. We spent the day at the Museum of Anthropology and accessed this beach by walking along a beautiful hiking trail, surrounded by ancient old growth forests.

OUTH AMERICA Grand Prix is the world’s largest international student dance competition, which awards $250,000 in scholarships each year to dance schools within the United States and internationally. It is held internationally each year, with final competitions taking place in New York City. It includes ballet and contemporary dance styles of performance. It is open to dance students 8–19 years old. January 8th-10th 2016, Dance Institute dancers Alyssa Pratt and Clarisse Rosenthal participated the YAGP’s regional competition in Austin Alyssa Pratt performing “Landslide” Texas. Alyssa competed in YAGP’s pre-competitive category, ages 9-11. Alyssa, age 11, performed the classic variation “Aurora’s Wedding Variation” from Sleeping Beauty and also a contemporary solo, “Landslide,” choreographed by Joey Arrigo. Alyssa received 1st Overall, and her score qualified her to attend YAGP Nationals in New York City. Clarisse, age 15, competed in YAGP’s Senior Division which includes ages 15-19. Clarisse performed the solo “Esmeralda” and two contemporary solos, “Ex-Machina” by Andrew Winghart and “Weightless” by Joey Arrigo. Clarisse received 1st Overall in Contemporary and 2nd Overall with her classic variation, with her high scores also qualifying her to attend Nationals in New York City. To top off the weekend, Dance Institute was awarded YAGP’s “Outstanding School” award. Dance Institute is known for its strong technical dance program and classical training. DI students have won scholarships to Complexions Contemporary Ballet, ABT’s summer intensive in New York City and Washington Ballet’s Summer Intensive.
