ELLIE AND CLAY Cashatt moved to Lakeway from Houston in the summer of 2004. Kellie attended LTHS as a sophomore before returning to her hometown, New Braunfels, to finish up. She and Clay met at Texas A&M and, after graduation, settled in Houston. They started Hill Country Site Supply, a distributor of construction products for commercial, industrial, residential and highway construction projects in 2005. Along with two other partners, the business now has locations in New Braunfels, Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth. Since this issue focuses on the restaurant scene, we asked the Cashatts about their dining out habits. It’s not the distance that keeps them from exploring the new restaurants in town, for after rush hour is over, the commute to town is 20 minutes. But with two active sons, one son who will start as a freshman at LTHS and another who will enter 6th grade at HBMS, the Cashatts find their kids’ activities keep their dining out local. Their absolute favorite local restaurant is Lakeway’s Santa Catarina. “We go there almost every Friday night,” says Kellie. Their favorite in-town restaurants are P.F. Chang’s, Eddie V’s, Shady Grove and Chuy’s. The last time they went to P.F. Chang’s they rented a pedicab chauffeured by “Super Woman” and took a tour of downtown…a great way to digest a fine meal before the drive home.

USTIN AREA foodies gathered on May 14 at the beautiful, historic Barr Mansion for Sustainable Food Center’s 8th annual Farm to Plate event. Barr Mansion is the nation’s first certified organic special events venue. According to the Sustainable Food Center, Farm to Plate is “the only fundraising event in the area focusing exclusively on locally grown and produced food.” The lively evening featured an array of scrumptious bites prepared by thirty of Austin’s finest local chefs, including Steven Cak, (Contigo and Gardner), Roman Murphy (Bess Bistro), Alexis Chong (Sway), Rick Lopez (La Condesa), Michael Castillo (Uchi) and Susana Querejazu (Odd Duck), to name just a few. Farm to Plate also strives to educate guests on the benefits of affordable, humanely raised and sustainably grown food and, specifically, how choosing this type of food improves the local food system. All proceeds raised benefit Sustainable Food Center’s not-for-profit programs. These include four farmers markets, organic food gardening classes, support for area farmers and cooking classes and nutrition education. Following a “sip and stroll” event format, guests were free to indulge in the assortment of tempting bite-size treats, all made from locally-sourced ingredients, at the dozens of stations

Tasty drinks from Argus Cidery, Glazer’s, Hops & Gradin, Independence Brewing Co., Saint Arnold Brewing Company, Thirsty Planet, Tipsy Texan and Zhi Tea complimented the variety of the menu. Generous sponsors included: HEB, Silicon Labs, and JP’s Peace Love & Happiness Foundation. First Connect Insurance, Farm Credit Bank, Bank of America and Broadway Bank. The Sustainable Food Changemakers awards, honoring individuals and organizations who have contributed to SFC’s mission, were presented during the event. Lynn and Tom Meredith, who received SFC’s first Sustainable Food Changemakers award, were Honorary Co-chairs of the event. “We couldn’t think of a better time to celebrate our 40th anniversary than at Farm to Plate, surrounded by our friends, supporters, and advocates of our local food system,” said Ronda Rutledge, Executive Director of Sustainable Food Center. The event surpassed the organizers’ grant goal by raising more than $28,000 for the Center. Sustainable Food Center’s Mission: Founded in 1993 with roots dating back to 1975 as Austin Community Gardens, Sustainable Food Center is involved in every step of our local food system. SFC’s mission is to cultivate a healthy community by strengthening the local food system and improving access to nutritious, affordable food. SFC envisions a food-secure community where all children and adults grow, share, and prepare healthy, local food. From seed to table, SFC creates opportunities for individuals to make healthy food choices and to participate in a vibrant local food system. Through organic food gardening, relationships with area farmers, interactive cooking classes and nutrition education, children and adults have increased access to locally grown food. SFC plays an empowering role that improves the longterm health of Central Texans and the Central Texas environment.

Taste This Austin’s Exploding Restaurant Scene STORY BY MONALISA SAENZ
L
ONG CONSIDERED a mecca for Tex-Mex and barbeque enthusiasts, Austin’s restaurant scene is now expanding and joining the ranks of other sophisticated “foodie” cities as a range of new, exciting and sometimes, slightly exotic, eateries continue to open at record pace. No longer simply a college town offering the typical Texas-style, comfort food staples, the city is undergoing a transformation, with an abundance of acclaimed new restaurants breathing life into its neighborhoods. While Austinites may never waver in their love for the city’s traditional dining spots, they can now explore more adventurous options that include upscale Thai, coastal seafood, pizza trailers and European pub fare. Thrillist.com recently released a list titled “Austin’s 15 Hottest New Bars and Restaurants,” and the lineup included the following: Lady Luck, Vox Table, Alcomar, Juliet Ristorante, Liberty Kitchen & Oyster Bar, The Townsend, Eureka!, Shake Shack, Cantine Italian Café & Bar, Lonesome Dove Western Bistro, Corner, Via 313 Pizzeria, Zilker Brewing Company, Gelateria Gemelli and Burger Bar. In addition to these buzzy hot spots, Austin continues to impress with plenty of older, more established locations that have already achieved “tried-and-true” status. South Austin seems to be a veritable breeding ground for the restaurant scene, with a host of trendy eateries lining both South First and South Lamar streets. Uchi, Odd Duck, Sway, Lenoir and Elizabeth Street Cafe are among the more popular names in the area. Equally as impressive is the East Austin restaurant scene. LaV, Qui, Justine’s and Hillside Farmacy are just a few of the seemingly endless options there, and charming Clarksville also has its own share of delicious eateries. Winflo Osteria, Jeffrey’s, Clark’s Oyster Bar and Fabi + Rosi come to mind. With this abundance of great food, we couldn’t be more excited to lift our forks this fall. Bon Appétit!

Sway Sway is an award-winning modern Thai restaurant, named one of Bon Appetit Magazine’s ‘50 Best New Restaurants in America.’ Sway offers a unique dining experience on South 1st Street in the heart of Austin’s Bouldin Creek neighborhood. Menu inspiration: modern Thai, Australian Thai Current executive chef: Scotty Szekretar Space/vibe: Award-winning architect Michael Hsu collaborated with Jesse Herman to create an interpretation of a traditional northern Thai–style lanna house. Sway’s design is modern, clean, and simple with an entirely open theater-style kitchen. Sway also offers patio seating with three large communal tables in the outdoor “spirit garden,” which is overlooked by a traditional mahogany Thai spirit house imported from Thailand. 1417 S 1st Street 512.326.1999 swayaustin.com
TRACE Situated on the ground floor of the W Austin, TRACE serves conscious cuisine that’s comprised of ingredients sourced in Central Texas. La Condesa is an award-winning modern Mexican restaurant, nominated for a James Beard Foundation Award for ‘Best New Restaurant.’ Helmed by Executive Chef Rick Lopez, La Condesa is located in Austin’s vibrant 2nd Street District, across the street from the W Hotel Austin and the world-famous Austin City Limits. La Condesa features the largest selection of 100% blue agave tequila and mezcal in Austin and a craft bar program overseen by Cocktail World Cup champion Nate Wales. Menu inspiration: modern Mexican, interior Mexican Current executive chef: Rick Lopez Space/vibe: La Condesa was inspired by the hip, bohemian Colonia Codesa district of Mexico City. Bar 79 at the Austin location Photos by Chan Do
Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille Thirty-six years ago, the Perry family opened its first business—a small butcher shop in Houston. A few years later, Chris Perry came to work at the market and persuaded his father Bob Perry to add tables. As the market gained popularity, Chris opened the first Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille. Over the decades, Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille has remained true to its roots with its butcher-fresh USDA-aged prime beef and signature table-side carving presentations including its famous seven-finger-high pork chop. The awardwinning menu features eye-catching offerings like the symphony kabob and chateaubriand, as well as classics with a modern twist. Hardly a traditional stuffy steakhouse, Perry’s in Austin offers an elegant, yet casually comfortable environment with a two-story wine wall and an upstairs loft. Perry’s is home to vibrant Bar 79 (named after its founding year) offering an extensive wine and mixology program, live music and an outdoor patio. With five private dining rooms— even a Vault Room from an old bank— the Perry’s team will work with you to ensure your family gathering, business meeting, rehearsal dinner or celebration are most memorable. The Perry’s family has redefined dining with an experience that is truly Rare and Well Done®. 114 W 7th Street 512.474.6300 perryssteakhouse.com Perry’s Famous Pork Chop
Lenoir Todd Duplechan and Jessica Maher, the husband and wife who own Lenoir, named their restaurant after the wild grape varietal native to Texas. And the focus of their restaurant is fixed on just that—Texas ingredients. Austin American Statesman restaurant critic Matt Odam placed Lenoir in the #1 slot in his October 2014 list of the best restaurants in Austin. Lenoir features a seasonally changing menu of “hot weather food,” sourcing from local farmers and food artisans.
The expertly curated wine list offers full-bodied whites and light-bodied reds, with a focus on producers who make wine from indigenous varietals. The charming, intimate space was designed by Chris McCray & Co. and reuses family, personal and recycled items to evoke all the comforts of dining in a home. 1807 S 1st Street 512.215.9778 lenoirrestaurant.com

Fixe Fixe is a new Southern Progressive concept located at the ground floor of the IBC Bank building in downtown Austin. Helmed by industry veterans, Executive Chef & Co-Owner James Robert and Director of Operations & Co-Owner Keith House, the restaurant’s Southern hospitality is matched by the team’s commitment to quality and service, something the two have spent a lot of time thinking about and honing over their 13 years of working together. The menu pays homage to Chef Robert’s Louisiana upbringing, serving nostalgic family recipes that have unexpected and surprising elements. Fixe is open seven nights a week for “Sunday Supper” style dining, serving a menu that “celebrates the soul of the south” changing based on the season and what’s available. 500 W 5th Street 512.888.9133 austinfixe.com

Uchiko, translated as “child of Uchi,” opened in July 2010 presenting the same excellence and energetic atmosphere of the original Uchi restaurant with some noteworthy additions. The menu features Uchi’s same style of innovative, fresh cuisine with a main dining room that accepts reservations throughout the evening and a full service bar/café area. When asked about the inspiration for Uchiko’s design, Michael Hsu’s answer is first and foremost, “Japanese farmhouse”. Tyson Cole, Hsu and partner Daryl Kunik agreed that because this restaurant was located inside a transformed office building, the interior had to capture the accessible yet modern quality that Uchi naturally possesses as an old home converted into a restaurant. “The challenge was to offer the same welcoming vibe we have at Uchi, but to do something completely different. And most importantly to still reflect the laid-back nature of Austin and the clientele we serve.” The result is a design that is at once clean and earthy, contrasting the rough-hewn with shinier materials to create a balanced aesthetic. Sustainable products are sourced throughout with all elements—from seating and lighting to the placement of the kitchen and sushi bar—carefully arranged to ensure an ideal dining experience. Like Uchi, guests see a surprising mix of vintage, antique and newer accessories at Uchiko, but the style and implementation is new and unexpected. 4200 N Lamar Blvd 512.916.4808 uchiaustin.com/uchiko

Brunch at La Condesa STORY AND PHOTOS BY CATHIE PARSSINEN

Jana Henry cuts into the delectable huevos rancheros
FTER LIVING in Austin for over two decades, I occasionally flirt with the idea of moving to a new place, imagining what it would be like to experience a new landscape and to develop a new set of relationships with favorite spots to eat, drink and be merry. I now have that new landscape and dozens of new iconic spots to sample, and I didn’t even have to pack a bag or a moving box. For Austin has so transformed itself, especially over the past five years, that it truly is a new town of changing perimeters. As this issue is devoted to a few of the new restaurants that are putting Austin on the gastronomic map, we decided to have a girls’ brunch at one of the featured restaurants, La Condesa. The food was superb, and the brunch happy hour made a number of our party deliriously merry! I volunteered to be the “resignated,” designated driver, but I was merry too, with the contagious wit and gossip of my 30-something companions providing its own high! The nonprofit ATXsaferstreets.org advocates for initiatives to build a better transit structure with expanded transportation options to help reduce drunk drivers on the road. No matter whether diners are driving into town from Lake Travis or eating out around the corner from home, responsible options need to be in place for a sober ride home. Here’s to designated drivers everywhere! “Selfie Time!” Back Row: Beth Ann Hawley, Jana Henry, Heather Bucek Front Row: Amy Anderson, Brooke Toeller

OCKEY AND LINDA PIAZZA, long-time Lake Travis residents, relocated their 13-year old, family-owned restaurant, Rocco’s Grill, from Lakeway to a new location at 12432 Bee Cave Road. The new restaurant is significantly larger than the old Lakeway location, with two large, outdoor dining and entertainment areas that include a covered patio and outdoor deck shaded by a 200-year-old Live Oak tree. The new location also boasts ample on-site parking. Two private wine rooms can be reserved for private events, and a new oyster bar offers customers a tempting selection of fine Gulf and East Coast oysters. “Our Rocco’s Grill team couldn’t be more excited about our new location in Bee Cave, as well as our expanded offerings at the restaurant,” says owner Rockey Piazza. “We proudly invite all residents in Bee Cave and the surrounding area to come enjoy some of the finest pasta, seafood and steak in the area. We look forward to serving the rapidly growing Bee Cave and Hill Country Galleria communities, as well as our loyal Lakeway customers for Debra years to come.” & AJ Miller

coupled with a magical realism rooted in folk and colonial Latin American traditions. The Festival poster image, a boy with a goldfinch perched on his hand, suggests an inner world where art history meets with nostalgia and imagined storybook characters. Books taught Ronquillo how to paint, says Rachel Stephens of Wally Workman Gallery, which has represented Ronquillo for many years. “Moving to San Antonio from the Philippines, Fatima discovered for the first time the joys of a public library. For a small, foreign, friendless girl, that San Antonio library was a refuge,” Stephens says. “She devoured the work of Gabriel García Márquez, Octavio Paz, and many others. The endless supply of books opened up imaginary places and characters into which she escaped. She began to copy the pages of art history, teaching herself to draw and then to paint, mimicking the sensibility of Titian, Goya, and Renoir,” Stephens says. The Texas Book Festival is one of the largest and longest-running book festivals in the country. The first Festival took place in November 1996, and since then has grown into one of the nation’s premier literary events with 250-plus authors, 40,000 attendees, live music, kids’ activities, food trucks, book signings and sales, and 100 exhibitors all in and around the State Capitol over two full days. The Festival continues to be free and open to the public. For many, the Lit Crawl is the favorite addition to the Texas Book Festival schedule, since it takes place in the cool evening at interesting bars around town. But, of course, no matter what time of day or night it’s all about the great literature from fantastic authors, and there is an abundance of that throughout the entire Festival. The schedule will be available in early October. Visit www. texasbookfestival.org for more information, and join the conversation using the hashtag #txbookfest.

The 60th Annual Parade of Homes™ presented five custom homes, spectacularly perched atop a ridge of hills at Las Colinas Estates, a community nestled within Lakeway’s newest luxury neighborhood, Serene Hills. This 456-acre residential community includes 340 acres of dedicated open space and nature preserve with hike and bike trails. All five homes, two of which are featured on the following pages, illustrated the triumphant return to popularity of an architectural style that recalls midcentury modern design with a contemporary twist. No Tuscan towers, marbled columns, faux wall treatments or Roman red, curved clay roof tiles here. Trends were clean and linear, set off by natural materials like wood, stone and glass.

Immediately beyond the entry foyer and the floating, wood tread spiral staircase is an expansive, open living and entertaining area.
The open entertaining area of dry stacked bricks is complimented with industrial lighting and steel corbels to soften and enhance the lines of the home. The Art Nouveau décor of a Parisian train station of the late 1800’s inspired the corbels that add curved accents that break up the predominantly straight lines, creating the warmth intended by Designer Kimberly Bailey, of Luxury Real Estate and Design. Laser cut in Mexico, the corbels look as if they were made in the late 1800’s by hand.

Roberts is co-anchor of ABC’s “Good Morning America.” Under her leadership, the broadcast has won four consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Morning Program. Her courageous and public battles with breast cancer and myelodysplastic syndrome have won her accolades and support nationwide. In her memoir “Everybody’s Got Something,” Roberts tells the amazing story of her courageous battle against life-threatening illness, the life lessons she continues to learn and her inspiring return to the GMA anchor desk. Arquette, an Academy Award winner for her portrayal of Olivia in Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, has had a spectacular response to her heartfelt acceptance speech on the gender wage gap in the U.S. Arquette also took home the Golden Globe, SAG and BAFTA awards, along with many others, for this performance. She currently stars in CBS’s CSI: Cyber as Special Agent Avery Ryan. Chang is passionate about redefining the ways we share information in public space to improve our neighborhoods. She is the creator of the Before I Die project, which started when she stenciled the words “Before I die I want to _______.” on a chalkboard wall on an abandoned house in New Orleans. Overnight it became a place for people to pick up a piece of chalk, reflect on their lives, and share their personal aspirations in public space. There are now more than 525 Before I Die walls in over 35 languages and over 70 countries. The Texas Conference for Women is generously underwritten by sponsors including Austin American-Statesman; Cisco; Cancer Treatment Centers of America; Clear Channel Outdoor; United Airlines; and United Healthcare. The opportunities to showcase our accessorizing skills seem endless this season, with designers giving us plenty of fabulous statement pieces that are bold, luxe and sumptuous. In short, it’s time to trade lighter, minimalist pieces that work so well in the summer months for more luxurious items that look and feel rich, shine with metallic hues or add sparkle through embellishments. When considering color, black is always a safe choice for fall accessories but can sometimes seem a bit predictable and staid. With that said, if opting for black, try something over-the-top versus simple. For example, if black boots are on your fashion wish list, select a pair in shiny patent leather or an ultra-sexy, over-theknee style. Black, of course, is not necessarily de rigueur this season. Rich plums, burgundies and deep greens are other excellent color options when choosing wowworthy pieces. These autumnal shades are the perfect way to add contrast to a neutral, monochromatic outfit. Designers are also offering plenty of gilded options for fall, and you should consider metallics a fun, easy way to add flair to your ensemble. Once strictly reserved for evening attire, metallic hues can now be found everywhere. Even sneakers and cowboy boots are getting an unexpected dose of glam with the incorporation of gold, silver and bronze fabrics and leathers. Nothing says luxury like an accessory crafted from exotic skins. Handbags and shoes look particularly rich this season through the use of rare skins that include python, stingray and crocodile. Haircalf and fur are other popular trends for accessories this fall. Sparkle is also on the forecast, and plenty of designers have created shoes and bags that include eye-catching crystals and adornments. And, of course, if your budget is a bit more generous, a gorgeous set of statement earrings or a beautiful cocktail ring will also add a fair amount of dazzle. In summary, don’t be afraid to be bold and indulgent when choosing your next handbag, shoe or bauble. This season, more is more.

Keeping Healthy and Fit THE “BUSYNESS ADDICTION STORY BY SHALEE SUCHER
C
ONTEMPORARY CULTURE PRAISES busyness. We feel valued and validated when the bulk of our time is occupied, most commonly by work. As a result, we experience high levels of chronic fatigue, prolonged periods of stress, digestive disorders, thyroid issues, sleep irregularity, mood swings, muscle tension and headaches. It impacts our relationships with ourselves, our loved ones and our communities. Yet most perpetuate this cycle by adding even more to the already-full plate. We want to be busy. And many knowingly sacrifice mental, spiritual and emotional health in pursuit of busyness. There is an inaccurate belief that only high levels of stress damage our bodies. But even low-grade recurring stress can be profoundly disruptive to health and well-being over time. Endocrinologist Hans Selye said, “Every stress leaves an indelible scar, and the organism pays for its survival after a stressful situation by becoming a little older. Hectic lifestyles and the resulting stresses are known causes of deterioration of the body through cell damage. This dramatically speeds up the physical and mental process of aging. Many of the physical effects of stress are due to an increase in the production of the adrenal glands. The two main hormones they secrete directly into the bloodstream are cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones affect everything from blood sugar levels to thyroid hormone production and sleep quality. They can be very useful and even life-saving at times, however
many of us routinely live in high-stress environments, and our brains ignore messages to calm down. As a result, there is no reason for the adrenal glands to stop producing and releasing the hormones into the blood stream, eventually depleting our resources and wreaking havoc on our bodies. For many of us, being busy has become an addiction; a destructive way of being that has become habitual. The first step to restore healthy living is to get off the hamster wheel and reconsider lifestyle choices. Frenzied schedules and over commitments provide a false sense of importance Thinkstock/collection Pixland and are simply not sustainable. Taking control of time needs to become a priority for optimal health, equally as important as getting enough sleep, eating well, exercising and meditating. This will ultimately result in having healthier bodies, longer lives and a greater sense of well-being.

Fresh Dermatology A PLAN AHEAD GUIDE TO GET ON TRACK FOR FALL! Don’t you just love early Fall? A time of Fresh starts. School is back in session but the craziness of sports and birthday parties has yet to begin. After Halloween, the time goes by in the blink of an eye. Below are a few things to consider as you look ahead to fall. Skin Check: Dr. Thrash recommends a skin exam once a year for all adults. If it’s been too long since your last mole check, now’s a good time to get it done. Rear In Gear: As bikini bottoms make way for skinny jeans you’ll want to keep firm. Try Body of Knowledge, available at Fresh Dermatology, for smoother hips and thighs. Holiday Cards: From photo shoots to stamps, it pays to plan ahead. To beat the rush, order cards before Thanksgiving. If you plan to have any procedures, follow these rules of thumb to avoid a day-before-disaster: Botox or Filler: 4-6 weeks before: Latisse: 6 weeks before; Chemical Peel: 2-3 weeks before. Have you met your deductible? Whether it was a sprained ankle or an attack of appendicitis, your misfortune can become your gain. If you were advised to have a mole removed earlier in the year but put it off, now is the time to take advantage of the insurance benefits to which you are entitled. Nail Fungus: No one likes to admit it, but it happens. While most people seek treatment in the summer, the nail can take months to grow out. Treat it now to be flip-flop ready in 2016.

N FRIDAY, JULY 10, the Dell Diamond hosted the eighth annual Susan G. Komen速 Austin event, Pink in the Park. Nine local survivors of breast cancer were chosen, matched with team members of the Round Rock Express and highlighted at the beginning of the game. It was a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together, show support for each other and pay tribute to those who have been lost to breast cancer and lose still fighting the disease. Interim Executive Director, Karen Shultz, threw the first pitch and many, including some team members, shared their direct experiences with breast cancer. Round Rock Express Pitcher Jerad Eickhoff spoke of his aunt who was in the midst of her own battle with breast cancer. In keeping with tradition, the Express wore pink jerseys both to honor the survivors and to remember its victims. But for the first time ever this year, over 200 of the pink jerseys were auctioned off, and Komen Austin was able to raise over $9,000 from those sales alone. A portion of the ticket sales was also donated to the foundation in order to continue bringing awareness of breast cancer to the public and to provide access to healthcare to those who may not otherwise receive it. Komen Austin is a local non-profit organization that strives to save lives locally while committing to fighting breast cancer on a global scale. Established in 1999, it has invested close to $11 million into making services available to local men and women. It is involved in all aspects of breast health, including education, screening, treatment, follow-up care, survivor support, advocacy and research. Those impacted the most by this foundation are individuals who are uninsured or underinsured, as they benefit greatly from the varied services provided. Seventy-five percent of the money raised by Komen Austin stays in the area, including the counties of Travis, Hays, Williamson, Bastrop and Caldwell. The remaining 25 percent is invested into global research for fighting and finding cures for breast cancer.

ITH CHILDREN’S GAMES and rides galore, lots of yummy goodies to eat and drink and hundreds of booths for sponsors and vendors sprawled along the streets and sidewalks, the atmosphere at the Hill Country Galleria was part County Fair, part amusement park. The many bands playing live music provided one of the biggest draws for both adults and children, as the two top pictures reveal. ATRIOTIC SPIRITS WERE high as residents, both young and old, gathered along Lakeway Drive for the annual 4th of July Parade. Lakeway resident, Richard T. Drury, BGen USAF (Retired) served as Grand Marshall. It was everything you would expect it to be…there were Honor Guards and bands (one that marched and one that rode!) and flags flying everywhere. The Women’s Club of Greater Lakeway swept the Grand Prize award with its float “Women Preserving Freedom.” Chairman of the Club’s float, Charlene Cooley, and her team of committee members invited retired Army, Navy and Marine Go Dance Instructors Taylor Edwards and David Abril women to represent military personnel and added women costumed to portray historical figures Betsy Ross, Susan B. Anthony, Rosie the Riveter and Sandra Day O’Connor. 2nd place in the Civic Category went to Dottie’s Follies, a Special Interest performing group of the Women’s Club that entertains at special events. NY entrepreneur whose business is thriving as it approaches its fifth anniversary needs to take a bow and also a moment to celebrate the accomplishment. And that is exactly what owners Deborah and Johnny Sheldon did, hosting a party with live music by Michael Samuels, Jack Demeis and Dylan Robichaux, BBQ catered by Rudy’s and plenty of beer and bubbly. They were joined by the team of stylists Deborah Sheldon has carefully assembled who bring their very considerable artistic talents to serve a large and happy family of clients who gathered to raise a toast to Strandz. Entrepreneurial Spirit Thrives in Lake Travis BUSINESS PROFILE BY MONALISA SAENZ
PLATINUM MARINE Platinum Marine is a full-service marine repair center with an active boat brokerage department. The Lake Travis-based business specializes in the repair of major engine components, generators, and air condition and plumbing systems. Adhering to a “no job is too big or too small” policy, services range from routine maintenance to full yacht restoration. The center also features a detailing department and full-time fiberglass repair department. Situated on Emerald Point, the business boasts prime location and ramp access to the Capt. lake, and the company’s service facility and yard Mike Kern can accommodate vessels of any size. The company’s 50- ton marine travel lift is the only one of its kind on Lake Travis and is capable of hauling out sail and power boats that weigh up to 100,000 pounds. Platinum Marine repair services can take place in the yard, shop or in the water. All technicians are MerCruiser- and Volvo Penta-certified. Formerly known as Eriksen Marine, the business has operated in its current location for the past 17 years and was purchased by Captain Mike Kern (President and COO) and his business partner, Brent Craig (CEO and General Manager) in November 2014. Following its purchase, the company was renamed and introduced as Platinum Marine.
Kern, a Galveston native, has a passion for the marine industry and boating in his blood. The 32-year-old is a fourth-generation merchant mariner who holds a United States Coast Guard Masters license. Water has played a central role in Kern’s life; he grew up fishing, water skiing and working on the waterways of the Galveston-Houston ship channel. Kern relocated to the Lake Travis area after purchasing Sea Tow Central Texas, a marine towing and salvage franchise that continues to operate under his ownership. Raised in southern Missouri, Craig has worked in sales and sales management for most of his career. The 46-year-old holds a bachelor’s degree from Missouri State University and has worked for several Fortune 500 companies, including Kraft, Philip Morris and Grainger. Craig began his career working for his family’s foodservice distribution company, where he was employed until he was in his late 20s. After Kraft Foods purchased his family’s business, Craig accepted a transfer and relocation package that brought him to the Austin area. Prior to purchasing Eriksen Marine with Kern in 2014, Craig worked for Grainger Industrial Supply Company. Kern and Craig are members of Marine Retailers Association of the Americas and National Federation of Independent Businesses. In their free time, the two enjoy an active lifestyle that includes spending time with their families on the water, riding motorcycles through the hill country, playing golf and softball and catching live country music shows in the area. 512-266-3493 www.platinummarineatx.com

CTWC at the Reserve STATEMENT BY JO KARR TEDDER | PHOTOS BY BRANDI NELLIS AND CATHIE PARSSINEN
T
HE 2ND ANNUAL Golf and Gala Event, a fundraising benefit for the Central Texas Water Coalition, took place on May 17th and 18th. Pictured here are photos from the Gala at the Reserve at Lake Travis on the 17th. The fundamental goal of the CTWC is to ensure that the precious
water supply of Central Texas is properly and responsibly managed by those agencies and government bodies that hold the keys to stewardship over it. In her statement below, CTWC President Jo Karr Tedder comments about the latest developments affecting the management of the Highland Lakes.
Thank You to everyone who participated in CTWC’s second annual Gala and Golf Tournament on May 17th and 18th. We could not continue without your tremendous support and the support of all of our friends and partners, which allows us to work towards responsible water management. Although some have declared “the drought is over” and we are thankful the lake levels have risen, the problem isn’t solved, and we have to take action to protect the lakes as the primary source of drinking water for one of fastest growing regions in the country. On July 1st, the TCEQ commissioners approved LCRA’s application for an Emergency Order that suspends LCRA’s obligation under the 2010 Water Management Plan to release interruptible stored water this year. CTWC supported LCRA’s application to obtain emergency relief from the horrible consequences of continuing to operate under its outdated and Sail & Ski’s Bonnie Starrak, CTWC Executive Director, Ward Wyatt
ineffective 2010 Water Management Plan. This will help to protect central Texas’ drinking water supply this year LCRA’s revised Water Management Plan is moving forward quickly through TCEQ. CTWC generally supports the revised Plan, but we still have some concerns, which we have raised with the LCRA and the TCEQ. Our goals are simple: we want LCRA to operate Lakes Buchanan and Travis under a Water Management Plan that uses more recent hydrologic data; provides greater protections for LCRA’s firm water customers; and totally replaces the severely flawed 2010 Water Management Plan—before the irrigation season begins in 2016. CTWC provided comments on the proposed WMP to representatives of the TCEQ. The final deadline for the public to submit comments will occur in mid-August. The proposed WMP needs to pass quickly. LCRA Vice President of Water Resources John Hofmann said at a TriCounty Water Summit in the lower basin that, nationwide, May 2015 was the wettest May in history. “It was the culprit for causing all that damage, but also the culprit for raising water levels in the reservoirs. But we aren’t quite ready for a victory lap.” To put this in perspective, Lake Travis rose 15 feet in 14 hours in September of 1952 but that drought, the so-called “Drought of Record,” continued five more years. Jana Church, Hal Jones Another critical issue that would affect our reservoirs is an application filed with TCEQ by pecan farmer, O.P. Leonard, Jr. to build a dam and reservoir on the Colorado River upstream of the Highland Lakes. The proposed dam across the river would impound 325,851,000 gallons of water for

flooding their pecan orchard, and would back up the river for almost 9 miles. The application has already drawn a great deal of opposition. Opponents, including CTWC, LCRA and TPWD, have identified a number of issues, including the threat that this project will capture river flows that should pass through to downstream water users and enter Lake Buchanan. For more information on the dam, please visit www.CentralTexasWaterCoalition. com or www.nocoloradoriverdam.com Several things need to happen to protect the lakes. LCRA’s revised Water Management Plan must be approved by TCEQ this year. Additionally, the pricing disparity between municipal and agricultural users must be addressed by LCRA so rice farmers are as accountable for efficient use and conservation as our cities Dave Lee, Sharon McDonald, Tom Neslage, are. Until the pricing disparity is addressed, rice farmers down- Mike McDonald, Bruce Mills stream who are able to purchase the water Dave Pelz, owner of Pelz Golfing and renowned for almost nothing will continue to be able master of the short game, with Glenn Lee to empty the lake with little incentive to conserve. LCRA’s wholesale rate for water for homeowners and businesses is currently $175 per acre foot of stored water. The most recent LCRA rate for rice farmers was $6.50 per acre foot. (1 acre foot is Terrel Cass; 325,851 gallons). That must change.
