T

HE AUSTIN Children’s Shelter will present its 2015 Gala “Reach for the Stars,” honoring Kelly and Ronda Gray as the Inaugural Guardian Award Recipients, at about the same time this issue…with their images on our cover… appears throughout Austin and Lake Travis. Austin Children’s Services CEO Kelly White, in her letter to the Grays, explained the factors that made their selection so easy: “Ronda, your dedication to this organization—from your six years on the Board, to your creativity and excitement around the Gala and re-inventing sponsorships, to your wisdom and dedication in creating the Women of Hope—all of these things have had a significant impact on this organization. And Kelly, your quiet and generous support never goes unnoticed. At every turn, you are at Ronda’s side, supporting ACS and her tireless efforts.” In fact, Kelly’s philanthropic traditions were instilled by his father, Joe, who founded the family business, Service Insurance Group, and by his mother Cherry. Joe shared his commitment to giving back with his children and every year dedicated a certain percentage of Service Group’s profits to charity. Cherry was one of the original eight volunteers who cooked and delivered meals to the elderly for Meals on Wheels, a cause that remained dear to her heart throughout her life. The Meals on Wheel Center on East 5th St. is named in honor of Joe and Cherry Gray. Service Group just donated $1 million dollars to the Salvation Army to build a rehab center offering free treatments for women. Given these shared traditions of compassion for others, it is not at all surprising that the Grays are being recognized for their devoted generosity of spirit by just one of the recipients of their largesse and commitment to others. They honor us with their willingness to appear on our cover! (Read more about the Women of Hope in our feature on page 62.)

T

HE ANNUAL Bob Mayberry Foundation’s Black & White Gala raised a record $70,000, a testament to the persistent efforts of founder Diane Judah-Mayberry and her committee of devoted volunteers to raise Pam Mayberry Solly funds and awareness for lung cancer research at MD Anderson. Dr. William N. Williams, Associate Professor and Chief of the Head and Neck section of the Department of Thoracic Head and Neck Medical Oncology at MD Anderson, confirmed the dismal fact that lung cancer research is woefully underfunded at the federal level, despite the fact that lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, exceeding those of colon, breast, and prostate cancer combined. In a heartfelt speech, Ellen Cresto Heflin honored her father, Joe Cresto, a Diane Judah Mayberry man who fearlessly fought lung cancer. She stated, “In those moments of panic, I realized what a gift the Bob Mayberry foundation, MD Anderson, and Dr. Zach and Ellen Heflin, Bridget Cresco, Dr. William N. William, William gave me. Because, not only were they able to extend my dad’s life for Susan Baker, Susan Wennerstrom, Toni Johnson nearly three more years through revolutionary technology, they in fact gave me Bob Jennings, Bob Laws, Jim Boyce, Sam Irwin, Paul Steece the best memories I have of my dad. It turns out that all the memories I have that best exemplify and remind me of his truly wonderful character were while he had cancer. This is because the care he was given allowed him to live with cancer and not merely survive. He was able to be the father I knew, and the man he wanted to be, while being treated for lung cancer.” Ryan Buehler also knows all to well about the struggles of lung cancer and is the recipient of the 2015 Mayberry Scholarship. Through the loss of his grandmother, he came face to face with this horrible disease and is choosing to William N. William, M.D., MD Anderson Cancer Diane and Bubba Breazeale enter a field that helps others.

BRANEK AND Holt Custom Homes provided the venue at their fabulous 2015 Home of Distinction in Seven Oaks for the “Grand Reveal” party announcing the Austin celebrities who will compete in the 2015 Dancing with the Stars Austin, a major benefit for the Center for Child Protection. 2015 marks the 9th year of Dancing with the Stars Austin. In 2007, Venus Strawn, Jeanne Parker and Sabrina Barker-Truscott introduced the inaugural dance competition as the concept for the fundraising gala for the CCP. Presented from its inception by Lexus of Austin and Lakeway, the excitement it generates grows each year. The 2015 celebrity dancers are Cole Adams, Brian Deroeck, Erin Johnston, Alexis Jones, Jenny Mason, Joe R. “Bud” Neeley, Rebecca Rooney, Ann Schneider, M. Jordan Scott and Yanelys Thompson. Visit centerforchildprotection.org to read about the accomplishments of these Star-Philanthropists who will put it all on the line on December 6th at the Austin Hilton for the children the Center serves. 2015 Event Chairs are Katrine Formby and Venus Strawn; Honorary Chairs are Katie Jaffe and Andra Liemandt, and once again, Sabrina Barker-Truscott will serve as Director and Emcee of the production. Each year, the success of this event plays a significant part in the Center’s ability to provide high-level services, including forensic interviews, therapy services, medical service and crisis intervention, to young victims of abuse.

Celebrate! Nothing Marks a Special Occasion Better Than an Evening Out at a Special Restaurant Many of our fondest memories of the holidays center on food. Every family has food traditions that enrich the celebrations of the holidays. In Mexico, it would not be a proper Christmas Eve without making tamales, and that tradition has spread throughout Texas where you don’t have to

Whether it is baking and decorating homemade Christmas cookies or helping with the preparation of the Thanksgiving feast, the kitchen takes center stage during these special occasions. It is the preparation of the homemade meal in a kitchen fragrant with the smells of thyme and rosemary and cinnamon and cloves that holds special meaning. Santa Catarina Restaurant Cousins Jesus Hernandez and Francisco Cortez grew up in a rural, farming community southwest of Mexico City. Their family raised much of what they ate and made their own butter, yogurt and queso fresco. The boys sat at a family table where they were treated to the authentic recipes of interior Mexico, recipes handed down to them by their mothers and grandmothers. The two have used this heritage to good advantage, garnering 30 years’ experience in fine dining. Now five years old, Santa Catarina represents the very best of these traditions. The freshest, locally sourced ingredients, superior meats and dried herbs, peppers and seeds create the original, fresh tastes of their menu. Everything is made from scratch. Customers rave about the cochinita pibil, the camarones poblanos, and the homemade mole sauce, among others. Even their margaritas are made with 100% pure agave nectar. Keeping Healthy and Fit SKIN HEALTH STORY BY BROOKE TOELLER

W

HEN PEOPLE think of organs, they typically think of the heart, kidneys or the brain. But not all organs are internal. Your external organ, your skin, is actually the body’s largest organ and has several key functions. Your skin protects your internal organs, holds onto water and nutrients, and keeps harmful germs out. Without it, you would get infections. Further, because of the nerve endings in your skin, you are able to feel sensations such as hot, cold, pain, and vibrations. Without the nerve endings, your body could be severely injured. Since the skin is such an important organ, proper care is a necessity! There are varieties of issues that affect our skin and, according to the AARP, “Dermatologists, or doctors who specialize in skin problems, treat more than 3,000 conditions. One of the most common issues is psoriasis, a disease that causes cells to build up too quickly, forming silvery scales and itchy red patches that can be quite painful. Another common skin problem is dry skin. Diseases such as diabetes or other kidney diseases can be a factor leading to dry skin, and with age the total amount of sweat glands declines. Shingles is a painful viral infection that can occur when the chickenpox virus that has been inactive since childhood reactivates and forms a painful rash. Skin cancer is a common form of cancer characterized by the abnormal growth of skin cells. Often irregular moles or birthmarks that change are first symptoms. Knowing your skin is key to early detection. The ABCDEs of skin cancer are ways to detect abnormal growths: Asymmetry, Borders that are uneven, Color changes or a variety of colors, Diameter larger than a pencil

eraser, and Evolving, or changing in any way. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Rates of the deadly skin cancer melanoma are increasing rapidly among adults age 65 and older. Skin changes with age. It becomes thinner and loses elasticity. However, taking care of your skin now can reduce the chance of skin issues. Wearing sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more and avoiding direct contact with the sun in the middle of the day are important ways to save your skin. Further, wearing sunglasses and large hats can protect you from the sun. Utilizing a moisturizer daily helps to keep in moisture and prevent dry skin. One of the best things you can do is to check your body at least once a month for any new growths or moles. Once you spot any changes, consult with your doctor.

Fresh Dermatology PORES. Everybody has them, nobody wants them. Itಬs one of the number one cosmetic complaints. So what are they, and what can you do about them? Pores are tiny dilated openings in the skin. Theyಬre each attached to a small oil gland or sweat gland and many contain tiny hairs. They allow the sweat and oil to make it out to the surface. Without them your skin would be hot and dry! But when they fill up with dead skin cells they can start to get dilated, making the skin look bumpy. As we age we lose collagen, the building blocks of our skin. Without collagen the pores start to widen like a sock which has lost itಬs elastic. Diminishing the appearance of our pores depends on two things: keeping them free of dead skin cells, and keeping the collagen around them plump and strong. To get to the root of your pore problem, begin with a trip to board certified dermatologist Dr. Candace Thrash for a thorough evaluation. A special Deep Pore Treatment can be applied to loosen the dead skills from the pores, and gentle, medically supervised extractions can be performed. If loss of collagen is to blame, Clear + Brilliant laser may be recommended. The device is FDA approved specifically for the treatment of pores, fine lines, and pigmentation. The treatments are painless, and the results are impressive. Using good products at home is a must if you hope to maintain your results. Licensed aesthetician April Matthews and the staff at Fresh Dermatology can help you select an affordable skin care regimen that will keep your skin looking healthy, clear, and Fresh! 1008 RR 620 S., Ste 101, Lakeway, Texas 512-615-5600 www.freshdermatology.com

IGITAL DENTISTRY IS BASED RIGHT HERE IN AUSTIN! One of the leaders of the industry is Dr. Todd Ehrlich. Dr. Ehrlich has been on the forefront of digital dentistry for 15 years and is a consultant for the biggest and most innovative companies in dentistry. His passion for high-tech dentistry has given him the opportunity to lecture across the U.S. and internationally to thousands of dentists. He completes live patient demonstrations at the annual American Dental Association meeting where thousands of dentists discover the attributes of digital dentistry. As in any industry, dentistry benefits by going digital. Dr. Ehrlich explains: “Patients want the best technology, and I believe digital dentistry is the way to go. We no longer need impressions or two visits to complete our crowns and veneers. We simply scan the teeth into a computer, design the restorations in a computer program, and then mill them. It is simple, fast, and extremely accurate. The best thing is that the patient does NOT have to come back. No temporary! Done! My favorite cases are our one-day makeovers: veneers in a day! Digital dentistry also includes techniques for diagnosing: X-rays. Digital x-rays have come a long way and most dentists are using them, but what makes Dr. Ehrlich stand apart is that he utilizes three-dimensional x-rays much like a CT scanner. This allows him to digitally plan dental implants and diagnose tooth problems that are very difficult to see on traditional x-ray views. He is one of the few general dentists in the US to even have this capability. Dr. Ehrlich opened a new office and training facility at the Westlake Dermatology Building on Bee Caves Road. The

Digital Enamel Education Center has taught doctors from around the country and locally. Dr. Ehrlich explains, “Because I am at the forefront of technical dentistry, we were able to build a new facility that represents that in the Westlake Dermatology Building. I am glad to call the area my home and help my neighbors with the highest technology in dentistry.” Smile Designs • Todd Ehrlich, DDS 8825 Bee Caves Road Suite E, Austin, Texas 78746 (In the Westlake Dermatology Building) www.WestlakeSmileDesigns.com (512) 263-8332

HE WOMEN’S Club of Greater Lakeway exuded class, charm, style, and panache in their annual Fashion Show Extravaganza themed Hooray for Hollywood! As the star-studded models danced their way down the catwalk to songs from every major movie throughout Hollywood history, they showed off their moves as well as the latest trends in clothing and accessories, all of which were provided by Dillard’s. Once Transformation Salon styled the hair, and Dillard’s applied the magical makeup, these ladies were glammed up and red-carpet ready. Guests were greeted by stars Gina Lollobrigida (Annette Brown), Sandra Dee (Sandy Barbari), and Scarlett O’Hara (Jody Berry). Even Marilyn Monroe (Dottie Stevenson) made a special appearance and danced down the runway to Diamonds Are a Girls Best Friend! Jaime Rubenstein served as the Chair of this fashion show and emcee, and she and her committee created an atmosphere and style show that can be summed up with one word: FUN!!!!

Entrepreneurial Spirit Thrives in Lake Travis BUSINESS PROFILES BY MONALISA SAENZ

IKARD WYNNE LLP

KID-E-SHACK LAKEWAY

Founded in 2005 by Anne Wynne and Bill Ikard, Ikard Wynne is an Austinbased law firm that focuses on family law, property tax law and business litigation. The firm also handles complex real estate and business transactions. Ikard Wynne partner and Dallas native Anne Wynne has an impressive 35-year career in law. After graduating cum laude from Smith College, Wynne made a move to Austin to attend University of Texas Law School and has called the city her home ever since. She received her license to practice law in 1978. Her focus on family law also includes expertise in collaborative family law, a practice that allows couples to resolve disputes out of court. Wynne says the key to her firm’s success lies in its ability to guide clients through complicated legal matters while always keeping their emotional and financial well-being in mind. “We believe there is a way to handle a family law case by taking the high road. Keeping civility and respect at the forefront minimizes collateral damage to all parties, creating a greater opportunity for success and happiness after a difficult life transition,” says Wynne. “At Ikard Wynne, our attorneys have a depth of knowledge, experience and expertise that allows us to protect our clients’ long-term interests, both in and outside the courtroom. From discovery and depositions to mediation and trials, our clients’ emotional and financial needs remain our top priorities. Our firm’s structure allows family law attorneys to work closely with transaction and business attorneys in handling complex property issues. This saves time and money by eliminating a client’s need to hire additional attorneys to support or supplement our representation.” In addition to her work in family law, Wynne has also been active in public policy and commercial litigation. She has been named to three gubernatorial appointments under Gov. Ann Richards: Chair of the General Services Commission, Member of the Texas Transportation Commission and Member of the Texas Turnpike Authority Board of Directors; she also served with the latter two organizations during Gov. George W. Bush’s administration. Wynne is a member of various professional organizations, including Collaborative Law Institute of Texas, International Academy of Collaborative Professionals, State Bar of Texas, Austin Bar Association and Texas Association of Mediators. In 2004, she founded Atticus Circle, a nonprofit organization that encourages the advancement of equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) partners, parents and their children. She received the Honoree Texas Lawyer Extraordinary Women in Texas Law award in 2008. In 2015, she joined the Austin Community Foundation Board of Governors. Wynne describes members of her family (and firm) as serious sports enthusiasts, and she is happy to join them in watching everything from T-ball to professional sports. Wynne is married to Fred Ellis and is a mother of three children: Alex, Hallie and Lila. 512.275.7880 www.ikardwynne.com

Claudete Gunsalus loves children and is committed to providing them with the highest quality drop-in childcare service available. As the owner and director of Kid-E-Shack Lakeway, she is dedicated to making sure that parents have access to convenient childcare and that they can rest assured that their children will be well cared for, kept safe, and entertained. For Ms. Gunsalus, who has over thirty-three years of experience in childcare service, taking care of children is more than a job; it’s a labor of love. She says, “I consider myself lucky to be able to give my time and attention to your children.” Claudete Gunsalus became the owner of Kid- E-Shack Lakeway in August 2011. She is highly active and dedicated to the community. She spends much of her time and energy outside of work volunteering for organizations that promote safety and participating with school events. Ms. Gunsalus has helped with the Bee Cave Police Benevolent Foundation Gala and in 2013 graduated from the Lakeway Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association. This year, she will graduate from the Bee Cave Citizen Police Academy. She says of her volunteer efforts, “This is my community; I want to make sure that everything works well for the families here.” Kid-E-Shack Lakeway is a dropin childcare facility, meaning that is available for parents when they need it the most. Whether it’s some time to run errands or for quick care in a crisis situation, Ms. Gunsalus wants parents to know that she and her employees are available whenever they are needed. Ms. Gunsalus said that she has helped many families that are new to the area, “they don’t yet have friends or family nearby and have no one to rely on to help with their children, but they can rely on us. We want them to know that we are here for them, and we will try to provide them with the kind of service that they would get from a friend or family member.” In order to make Kid-E-Shack Lakeway an inviting and comfortable environment for both parents and children, Claudete Gunsalus makes it a top priority to hire staff members that are not only highly qualified but who also love children. She says, “I don’t just want them to like kids, I want them to love kids!” For Claudete Gunsalus, her priorities for the children in her care are “first safety, then to be happy and entertained. “With a caring staff and variety of fun options like an incredible indoor playscape, game systems, air hockey, foosball, an art room, games, books, and a movie room, kids from ages 18 months to 14 years of age will find themselves happily entertained and well cared for. Parents are able to get time and support when they need it at Kid-E-Shack Lakeway. 512.402.0077 www.kid-e-shack.com

SAGE THREADS & CO.

CLEAN CHANNEL DREDGING

Fashionistas will find a style sanctuary in Sage Threads & Co., a boutique offering clothing, accessories, gifts and home décor. The Lakeway shop opened its doors in June 2015 and is the brainchild of owner Kenna Johnson. Johnson, a Houston native, originally launched Sage Threads as an e-tailer in 2014 and chose Lakeway as the community to open her brick-and-mortar business after moving to the area and falling in love with her new hometown. Noticing a shortage of women’s boutiques in the area, Johnson decided it was the perfect opportunity to create a clothing store with fun, edgy, hard-to-find brands. Featuring items that are contemporary and high-quality, the store offers plenty of must-have pieces, including suede booties, flowy dresses and distressed jeans at prices that are pleasantly affordable. Popular brands include Bobi, Blanknyc, Bando, Capri Blue Candles, Level 99 and Knot Sisters. Johnson, just 24 years old, is a young but seasoned player in the retail industry. She received a bachelor’s degree in apparel merchandising and product development from University of Arkansas and has been working in retail since she was 16. For Johnson, bringing a brick-and-mortar Sage Threads to life was a decision strongly influenced by her personal shopping preferences. “I like interacting with customers and helping people style an outfit or shop for new clothes,” she says. “I’m not a huge online shopper; I like to go into a store, see things in person and try them on. I know I am not the only person that likes to do that, so why not have a store where they can see the quality of the clothing and have a fun shopping experience?” Customers seeking the ultimate in shopping fun can also take advantage of Sage Threads’ “Sip and Shop Nights,” private in-store shopping events that can be booked for small or large parties. The store also hosts trunk shows and lists sales and deals daily on social media. Making shoppers feel special is, per Johnson, at the top of the list. “Customer Service is definitely our number one priority,” she says. “We want everyone to feel comfortable coming in and asking for help, whether it is to find the perfect gift, an outfit for a special event or a new pair of jeans!” Sage Threads also offers gift wrapping and gift cards. In her spare time, Johnson prefers to play with her two dogs, Mila, a goldendoodle, and Ruby, a Labrador retriever/German shepherd mix, and hang out in Austin with friends. 512.394.7323 www.sagethreadsco.com

Founded in 2013, Clean Channel Dredging is a Kingsland-based company serving central Texas areas including Lake LBJ, Kingsland, Highland Lakes, Lake Marble Falls and Lake Austin. Featuring a unique pontoon-mounted sediment-removal system, Clean Channel Dredging is ideal for clearing narrow, winding waterways and other that areas that might not benefit from larger, standard dredges. The company was born out of necessity and started by Houston-born entrepreneur Ron Poole. No stranger to the water, Poole often spent time at his grandparents’ home on Lake Conroe and enjoyed swimming and water skiing. After graduating from Memorial High School, Poole joined the Navy submarine service and then later graduated from University of Houston. He also received an MBA from Houston Baptist University. After moving to Austin in 1994, Poole was able to realize his lifelong dream of buying a lake house vacation home, which he did on a channel off Lake LBJ. However, Poole soon encountered a problem with the location of his dream home. The channel where his lake house was located was no longer navigable and too narrow for traditional dredges to clear. Poole quickly went to work, researching systems that would do the job and in the process, began a thriving business of his own. The company’s success lies in its pontoonmounted sediment-removal system which mobilizes more quickly than larger, heavier systems. Launching and loading uses a trailer and is more like a boat launch than a conventional dredge or excavator. The result is less labor, less time and less damage to the surrounding areas and the shoreline. Once launched, the pontoon then travels by means of an electric windlass and cable set. The dredger, which can fit into narrow canals, excavates and moves sediment to the pump inlet by a hydraulic rotor blade. The pumped sediment is carried away for dewatering or other disposition at the rate of up to 1600 GPM. The system excavates and moves below-water sediment to a suction pump and carries it away through hoses and booster pumps. The wet sediment and debris can be “pumped and dumped” or pumped to dewatering bags to be filtered, dried and used for fill dirt. Clean Channel Dredging can include soil disposition as part of its services. Clean Channel’s services can make waterways more navigable, improve the quality of water for recreation or business, and prolong the use of lagoons and draining ponds. Clean Channel Dredging can remove sediment and other debris from many locations, including: channels/canals, lakes, rivers, sand/ shorelines, marinas, retention/detention ponds and golf course water hazards. When not busy with Clean Channel Dredging, Poole enjoys running several Austin-based small businesses, including a tire store and a leather and vinyl restoration company. He is married to Kristi, has a daughter, Nicole, and a son, Jared, who works for Clean Channel Dredging. 325.270.2117 www.cleanmychannel.com

Emerald Point Marina Boat Show STORY BY CATHIE PARSSINEN | PHOTOS BY PATTI PIESZCHALA

OAT ENTHUSIASTS who attended two major boating events on October 17th were reminded again, lest they had forgotten, of the radiant beauty of Lake Travis. Crosswater Marina had its Annual Rods and Ribs event, with a car and barbeque competition benefitting Folds of Honor, and Emerald Point Marina hosted the 2015 In the Water Boat Show. Although our photographer, Patti Pieszchala arrived in the late afternoon, Buzz Watkins of Sail & Ski told her that the event had been well-attended. This event remains one the best opportunities for boaters to test drive the latest models and to experience firsthand all the newest features. Once you take a lick of that lollipop, you really want to take it home with you! The Buzz Watkins and James Johnson from Sail & Ski test drive is always a good sales strategy!

Moreland Celebrates at Laguna Gloria STORY AND PHOTOS BY CATHIE PARSSINEN

MILY Moreland is known for treating her agents and clients to unique parties that celebrate the treasures of the Austin area. In keeping with that tradition, her selection of the Contemporary Austin Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park at Laguna Gloria provided a perfect setting to celebrate the complimentary passions of Moreland’s clients for distinctive properties and fine art. Fortunately, the rain stopped just before the event started, allowing guests to stroll through the grounds to admire Strange Pilgrims. Louis Grachos, the Ernest and Sarah Butler Executive Director of the Contemporary Austin greeted guests as they arrived and later spoke about the current exhibit. In his words, “Strange Pilgrims is the museum’s first large-scale, thematic group exhibition, featuring fourteen internationally recognized, cross-generational artists across three exhibition venues. Strange Pilgrims is a unique opportunity for museumgoers to explore a new take on experiential art.”

EATURED on the cover of this issue are Kelly and Ronda Gray. The “About the Cover” feature announces the selection of the Grays as the inaugural recipients of Austin Children’s Services Guardian award. The dedication and service the Grays have given to the abused and neglected youth served by the Austin’s Children’s Shelter redefines the meaning of generosity. Ronda Gray, along with two other ACS board members, Sherri West and Irene Williams, and Mindy Bakker, another ACS supporter, founded the Women of Hope in on August 25, 2011. Their three goals were straightforward: to raise $100,000 annually in support of Austin Children’s Shelter; to provide Lana Marcum, Founding Member an opportunity for a hands-on service project; and to provide an opportunity to ACS Executive Director Stacy socialize with likeminded, generous women in Austin. We know there are plenty Bruce shares a portrait of of women’s groups supporting worthwhile causes in Austin” said Irene, “but we struggle, hope and healing experienced by a Shelter child also know how passionate the four of us are about a cause as important as this Tiffany Stillwell, Natalie Kennedy, during the time of her stay. Yvette Boatwright, Lauren Thomas one. People inspired by their passions are often wildly successful in achieving their goals, and this is certainly true of the Women of Hope. At the end of September, the Women of Hope gathered at the W Hotel to receive staff updates from Austin Children’s Services about the programs and progress at the Shelter. The meeting provided an opportunity to welcome new women who had expressed an interest in learning more about the Austin Children’s Shelter and about the Women of Hope. Women of Hope has grown from 21 Founding members and 10 annual members recruited on August 25, 2011 to 56 Founders and 45 Members, a total of 101 Women of Hope! As ACS Victoria Berryhill, Communications Coordinator, Executive Director, Stacy Bruce noted, “This philanthropic group of women SAFE Alliance and Jacy Rabold, SAFE Special Events Coordinator, display paintings of trucks and has come together around their common interest in making the world a better handprints and footprints created by Shelter children place for the abused and neglected youth we serve and has raised more than together with Women of Hope volunteers. $600,000 since 2011.” Sandy Bayne, Janie Dell, Anna Hardeman Amy Mills, Ronda Gray, At the same meeting, Women of Hope partnered with Union and Fifth to Woman of Hope Founder present a style show featuring members of the popular women’s band, The Mrs. Union and Fifth collect donations of couture clothing and sell it, giving 75% of the proceeds of the sale to the charity of the donors choice. The 2015 Texas 4000 Tribute Gala STORY BY CATHIE PARSSINEN PHOTOS BY LISA HAUSE AND CATHIE PARSSINEN

Board Chairman Jenifer Sarver & Executive Director Jen Thomas Ashley, Lee, Jenifer, & Jordan Sarver

O

VER 18 MONTHS ago, 71 University of Texas students made a serious commitment to service, leadership and volunteerism when they were selected as Texas 4000 riders. For 18 months, these students were involved in fundraising and leadership activities while simultaneously training to participate in the longest Charity Bike Ride in the world, a 70-day marathon, during which they would bike 4,000 miles from Austin to Anchorage, Alaska. Starting together in Austin, the group splits on the second day to travel three different routes, forming the Sierra Team, the Rockies Team and the Ozarks Team. All teams reunite in Canada to ride the last nine days together into Anchorage. As Board Chair Jenifer Sarver noted in her program remarks, “…the riders also made dozens of stops along the way, educating communities about cancer awareness and prevention; visiting cancer hospitals and treatment centers; presenting checks to cancer fighting organizations and engaging communities in the fight against cancer. They had ample opportunities to grow as leaders, collaborators, teammates and fundraisers. In fact, this team managed to raise a record-shattering $715,000!” Texas 4000 was founded by Chris and Mandi Condit in 2004 while they were both engineering students at the University of Texas in Austin. Conceived in response to Chris’ experience as a Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor, in just over a decade, Texas 4000 has raised more than $5 million for the fight against cancer. The roster of 2015 riders is ethnically diverse…as diverse as the global list of cancer victims. Cancer does not discriminate, attacking all with impunity. And the response of Texas 4000 embraces all.

ITH THE move from sleepy Star Hill Ranch on Hamilton Pool Road, site of the 2014 gala, to the Colony Ballroom at the newly opened Sonesta Hotel at the Hill Country Galleria, the 2015 Bee Cave Police Foundation Gala clearly stepped it up several notches. Since its founding more than 75 years ago, Sonesta has built, owned, managed and designed a collection of hotels throughout the world, including, at one time, the Plaza Hotel in NYC and Whitehall in Palm Beach. And now, they are here in Bee Cave. According to Teresa Breuggeman, Board of Directors President, “It was very successful, with about 280 guests attending. We raised approximately $20k (net) for our Foundation, twice as much as last year. The Sonesta served a delicious steak dinner, and we’ve heard some great feedback.”

throat which led to Scarlet Fever and that led to autoimmune encephalitis, often linked to the strep virus, and this ultimately led to high intracranial pressure. However his neurological symptoms presented in such an odd way that the high intracranial pressure went undiagnosed by doctors for two years. His mother, Melissa, did her own research online and was convinced he was suffering from high ICP, a conviction later confirmed by doctors. CC4C underwrote Drew’s trip to Carrick Brain Centers in Dallas and paid for his first week of therapy for occipital neuralgia. Now, at age 16, Drew lives by the motto: “It’s not whether you get knocked down. It’s whether you get back up!” Talaya Frazier, founder of CC4C said, “We are thrilled to be able to help these children and their families by inspiring them with our efforts.” Rare diseases affect more people than AIDS and cancer combined. UESTS IN cocktail attire exchanged animated greetings as they passed through the doors of the spanking new Lexus of Lakeway dealership on the evening of September 2nd. According to Cassie LaMere, Event Marketing Director for Lexus of Austin and Lakeway, it is one of only two stores that were opened by Lexus in 2015, and, of course, it is the first automobile dealership in the City of Lakeway. “We successfully collaborated with both the Toyota/Lexus Corporate Design Team and the City of Lakeway to build a “one of a kind” dealership. It has been so well received by the community and Lexus Corporate that Lexus has sent several groups (from the U.S. and well as Japan and one other country) to come tour our new facility to gather new ideas and concepts for their future stores or expansions,” LaMere noted. An extensive number of Lexus and Toyota executives attended to celebrate the landmark occasion. They included Yoshi Inaba, Executive Chairman Toyota Motor Services; Jeff Bracken, Group Vice President and General Manager, Lexus Division; and Jim Lentz, CEO Toyota North America and President and COO, Toyota Motor North America. Under the leadership of owner Vicki Roberts, Lexus of Austin has been the Presenting Sponsor for dozens of galas for nonprofit causes Roberts holds dear. HE FIRST Edition Literary Gala, the popular, elegant prelude to the Texas Book Festival weekend, drew a record number of literary luminaries, dignitaries, and cultural arts supporters who gathered to celebrate the Festival’s 20th anniversary. Bell jars filled with orchids decorated the tables in the ballroom of the Four Season Austin, and books by featured authors were at every place setting. The effortlessly hilarious Daniel Handler, better known as Lemony Snicket, emceed the event, and the featured speakers included acclaimed novelist Margaret Atwood and actor, Broadway star, and children’s book author Taye Diggs. The menu of Beef Wellington, accompanied by a side of grilled asparagus and carrots, and followed by a rich and decadent bananas foster torte, was almost as delectable as the evening’s entertainment. Tantalizing auction items included a holiday in a hacienda in San Miguel de Allende, dinner with Richard Linklater at local institution Jeffrey’s, a private Marcia Ball concert at Café Josie, and a Givenchy purse donated by ByGeorge, among many others. Three sisters: Sarah Queen, Mary Clare Matthews, and Denise Laurienti, daughters of former Festival board chair Jan Hughes and husband David Hughes, co-chaired this year’s Gala. The Gala supports the Festival and all of its charitable programs, including Reading Rock Stars, Texas Public Library Grants and the Fiction Writing Contest for students. The after-party, held outside on a beautifully temperate Texas night, lent the evening new vitality.

STORY BY KEIJA PARSSINEN The first time I attended the Texas Book Festival as an author, I was seven months pregnant, huge and grumpy and covetous of the cocktails flowing at the various parties. So when unpregnant me received an invitation to this year’s Festival, I was determined to have double the fun. The Festival kicks off on Friday evening with a black tie gala at the Four Seasons, and the authors are invited to crash the after-party. The evening was mild and clear, so most people migrated to the patio, margaritas in hand. I soon lost the Paul Morris, Angela Ledgerwood friends I’d arrived with, but it didn’t matter—at every turn, I ran into some lovely, Keija Kaarina Parssinen, fascinating writer or editor, and we’d get to chatting about books or panels or home Geoff Dyer or family, eventually parting as new friends when we drifted on in the party’s ebb and flow. While I never caught a glimpse of Margaret Atwood, who was one of the gala’s featured speakers, I did have the chance to meet Geoff Dyer, whose novel Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi has long been a favorite. Those of us who stuck around for the after-after party in the hotel bar were rewarded with a star sighting—Amy Schumer and Aziz Ansari held court near the band, and we writers turned giggly and giddy. Feeling invincible in my gold dress, I ambushed Aziz and shook his hand and did the fan Marc Winkelman, Shrub Kempner Michael Gillette, U.S. Representative Bill Witliff, Mary and Tim Herman Maggie Shipstead, Keija Kaarina Parssinen girl thing before Lloyd Doggett, Libby Doggett retreating back to the true stars in my firmament, the members of my weird, geeky, funny writer tribe.

Quite the Literary Delight THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY TEXAS BOOK FESTIVAL STORY BY ALLISON BARON | PHOTOS BY BOB DAEMMRICH

Y

OU COULD practically taste the literacy in the air while walking the streets of downtown Austin during the Texas Book Festival weekend, Oct 17 and 18, 2015. The Festival featured a record 300 authors, the largest number in its 20-year history, and drew more than 40,000 attendees. I was among the tens of thousands of book lovers, avid readers, and literary enthusiasts who found our happy place at the Festival on that sunny yet breezy October weekend. Starting first thing Saturday, I woke up early to do yoga with Festival authors Neal Pollack, Catherine Lacey, Elisa Albert, and Meera Subramnian on the lawn of the scenic State Capitol. The directors of Modo Yoga Austin led the session, and it was an invigorating kickoff to a literary extravaganza of a weekend. By 9:30 a.m., the Festival grounds were already swirling with excitement. The magical feeling that anything could happen (one I often get when reading a fantasy novel) washed over me as I gazed around. Giant white tents chock-full of books and enthused readers filled streets that were shut down for foot traffic only within a seven-block radius around the Capitol. Food trucks lined the Capitol grounds, offering everything from crepes to tacos. Parents with strollers wheeled down Congress Avenue towards the Children’s Entertainment Tents. Mobile phone zombies whose eyes are normally glued to their devices were replaced with book zombies ardently reading while walking from session to session. From the House Chamber, I watched prolific author and El Paso native Pat Mora receive the 2015 Texas Writer’s Award, an award that came with a pair of custom-made cowboy boots emblazoned with the Texas Book Festival logo. Mora’s vibrant conversation with the Festival executive director Lois Kim was laced with keen insights and lessons learned during her lifetime of literary achievements. Later in the afternoon, authors like Margaret Atwood, Margo Pat Mora received the 2015 Texas Writer’s Award for Festival Executive Director Lois Kim

Jefferson, and Leonardo Pitts Jr. appeared at the white linen-covered tables of the Book Signing Tent, meeting both devout fans and new readers. Families strolled up to the Capitol lawn, their kids ready to roll down the biggest hills before collapsing in the grass with a good book. Saturday night’s Lit Crawl Austin was another highlight from this whirlwind of a weekend. The annual literary pub-crawl featured some of America’s most groundbreaking writers onstage at various East Austin venues in a series of offbeat readings, literary games, and performances. The pinnacle of the evening was cuddling up next to my beau, listening to ghost stories told by a raft of YA stars in the eerie Texas State Cemetery during the “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” session. Although, sipping an ice cold Shiner Bock at the North Door while laughing hysterically at the ridiculous antics of authors Sloane Crosley, Austin Grossman, and Viet Thanh Nguyen during the Nerd Jeopardy: Booze and Book-Related Trivia session was definitely a close second. A few standout themes at this year’s Festival included nonfiction and fiction books about music, a panel on crime survivors’ perspectives, top authors who are fans of each other (Jonathan Lethem and Adrian Tomine), former presidential candidates, experts on past presidencies, football, fantasy and paranormal activity, and renowned journalists on topical matters including ISIS, border issues, and race. This quote from the Dallas Morning News sums up my sentiment exactly: “Every year, the Texas Book Festival gets a little bigger. And every year, summing it up in a few words becomes a little less likely.” Agreed!

AUSTIN’S SECOND ANNUAL DUCK DERBY A waterfall of yellow ducks!

Something to Quack About! STORY BY MONALISA SAENZ PHOTOS BY PATTI PIESZCHALA

USTINITES MAY be more accustomed to seeing rubber ducks in their bathtubs, but on August 8 they watched 10,000 of these iconic yellow birds invade a much large body of water—Lady Bird Lake—for the second annual Duck Derby. The annual event benefits the Austin Boys and Girls Club Foundation, a nonprofit organization that Misti Potter, supports and provides valuable assistance to the Vice-President of Boys and Girls Club of Austin 23 clubs operated by Boys and Girls Clubs of the Austin area. Proceeds from the Duck Derby help make a positive impact on the lives of more than 12,000 Austin-area children and adolescents, many of whom face financial obstacles, and ensures that they remain on a path to a healthy, successful future. Participants were able to “adopt” ducks online prior to the race, with costs ranging from $5 for a single duck and up to $100 for a flock of 25. Ducks raced to win “quacktastic” prizes, including a 2015 Volkswagen Jetta from Onion Creek Volkswagen, a Ducati Scrambler Icon from Ducati Austin, a one-week stay at Fairmont Heritage Place in Telluride, Colorado, and more. Event sponsors, including KXAN, KGSR, American Constructors and Time Warner Cable Media, helped Duck Derby provide plenty of free fun for the day. The event featured games, goodies, food trucks and, of course, plenty of rubber ducks. The Derby wouldn’t be complete without Derby Duck, the event’s official mascot, who was available for family photo ops. This year’s event raised nearly $150,000. HE AUSTIN School for the Performing and Visual Arts is now in its new home at Dance Institute. Carol de Cardenas is the founder and Executive Director of ASPVA, a private school serving and training talented young singer-songwriters, actors, dancers, visual artists and musicians. She describes the new collaboration between Dance Institute and ASPVA as one that provides perfect synergy. “This is one-stop shopping at its finest, an opportunity for students to receive an accredited, college-preparatory academic and fine arts curriculum and professional dance training under one roof!” ASPVA students now enjoy DI’s state-of-the-art facility and a comfortable campus-like feel. Dance Institute’s Performance Academy members Clarisse Rosenthal, Kele Roberson, and Luke Qualls are currently academic students at ASPVA. For these dancers, ASPVA provides a flexible schedule that allows them to synchronize their rigorous training with their academic education. Their training schedule includes 15-plus hours per week and requires traveling out of town for nine conventions, traveling on Fridays and returning late Sunday evenings. Linda Holland, DI’s Director, states, “My students love being able to arrive at school at 10:30 a.m. and, if they finish work early, they can rehearse or spend time in the studio training…..really a win-win!” Dance Institute’s Performance Academy had an extremely successful 2014-2015 year, and the stage is set for another great year. DI has established a very high professional level of training, and DI dancers are recognized for their strong, clean technique. If you have an artist in your family who is passionate about devoting more time perfecting his or her artistic skills, visit www.theaustinschool.org, and if you are a dancer with aspirations for a career in Dance or are interested in Dance Institute’s Pre-Professional Division, visit danceinstitute.com to schedule an informational meeting today!
