Thank you for another great year!
“We recently needed to organize a move to Austin (from overseas), and needed a home in Austin. To make the move more difficult, we never lived in Austin (nor Texas) prior to this move, we did not know the area, and were (and still are) expecting a baby. This meant that travel was prohibitive. We could afford to spend only 10 days in Austin (to do house hunting), and would have to do all the other steps remotely, from overseas. We did search the properties online prior to our 10-day trip, so we came prepared to the best of our abilities, but still, it was not all that much preparation. Amber was our real estate (buyer’s) agent, recommended by a mutual friend. Amber obviously knew her job well. She prepared about 25 high-end listings for us to visit. After the first day of viewing, she gauged our needs/desires, and narrowed the list to 12. We saw the 12 properties with in the week we had in Austin, and made our choice(s). And this is where Amber, and her team, came to shine. We moved back overseas, and Amber went to work. She conducted all negotiations with the seller (knowing very well what a reasonable price would be), lined us up with a local banker to help with the mortgage, organized inspections, closing etc. On top of that, she helped us with numerous personal advice about how to organize our move, what schools to consider for our
Amber Hart
kids, and finally, offered to meet the movers to unload our stuff that we shipped from overseas (because we could not be in Austin for the event) – this went well beyond the call of her professional duty, and we are very grateful for the help. We were not going arrive in Austin for two months after the closing, but we felt that the property was waiting for us in great hands, Amber’s very capable hands.” —A. & S. KAVCIC “I met Amber through my real estate agent in Atlanta, GA. (Where I was moving from). We had about 2 weeks to find a house and get our 2 children in school. It happened because Amber’s knowledge and enthusiasm about Lakeway were exceptional. We saw 21 houses in one day....Amber was patient with my need to “see everything.” She helped us finalize our decision to buy in The Hills. Amber, above all, is genuinely kind and interested in our family enjoying the Lakeway area. She has provided numerous recommendations for contractors and ensured our place was clean and move in ready with limited time. The first weekend we were in Lakeway she invited us to attend a birthday party of one of her son’s friends so that our kids could meet a few kids before the first day of school.....Nothing speaks to a mom’s heart louder than this!!! Thank you Amber! I highly recommend Amber and her team!” —C. GEORGE

N SEPTEMBER 22nd, Shakespeare’s fair Verona appeared like a vision in the ballroom of the JW Marriott in downtown Austin, thanks to street scene projections engineered by artist Jeff Kurihara. Stars twinkled against the Italianate building facades, which were bathed in warm lavender and orange light. The beautifully rendered projections served as the backdrop for one of the city’s most opulent parties of the year: Ballet Austin’s Fete, where over six hundred guests gathered to support arts programming and arts education for the Central Texas community. This year, the party took its theme from Romeo and Juliet, the timeless tale of doomed love and the Ballet’s season opener. Guests were divided into Montagues and Capulets, the two warring families at the heart of Shakespeare’s tragedy. At the Montague table, lush red roses and crystal-draped candelabra surrounded the guests, who ate from traditional place settings, whereas across the ballroom, the Capulets dined from sleek modern settings in black and white, the tables punctuated by simple and structural white orchids. For the tenth year in a row, tables were designed by Mandarin Design Lab, which offered a visually striking interpretation of the theme. The romantic beauty on display echoed that of Stephen Mills’ production, which told the story of the star crossed lovers through his elegant classical choreography. The ballet’s iconic score, composed by Sergei Prokofiev, perfectly complemented the dramatic narrative unfolding on the stage. Though that narrative ended tragically, the soirée did not. By evening’s end, the benefit had raised half a million dollars to support the Ballet’s mission; revelers got up from their carefully separated tables to join together in celebration on the dance floor; and guests could have their black-tie looks immortalized by Vogue Vignettes, which offered sketches for attendees to take home. Rather than stand divided by bad blood like Shakespeare’s Verona residents, guests united to support a vital artistic cause.

N OCTOBER 28, the Bob Mayberry Foundation held its 10th annual fundraiser to raise money to fund lung cancer research at M.D. Anderson. The event marks a decade of relentless achievement, spearheaded by Diane Judah Mayberry, against a cunning and stubborn foe. This final Black & White Gala will close the chapter on the Bob Mayberry Foundation’s fundraising efforts. It has been quite a run…in fact, it has been a marathon, a marathon inspired by the unflinching call to battle that consumed Diane from the moment her husband, Bob Mayberry, a nonsmoker, received his first diagnosis of lung cancer in 2003. Diane became obsessed with educating herself about lung cancer and the research and treatments available to combat it. She became perhaps one of the most wellinformed lay persons with a non-medical background to grapple with lung cancer, its consequences and its treatments. Her research on the disease that threatened Bob led her to Dr. Edward Kim at M.D. Anderson and to the pioneering, targeted treatments his oncological team was advancing. Despite an extension of his life through treatment at M.D. Anderson, Bob Mayberry succumbed to the ravages of lung cancer in 2007. One would have

thought that Bob’s death would have closed this painful chapter in Diane’s life, that she might have retreated to lick the wounds of the battle she and Bob lost. But she harnessed her grief to help other victims of the disease. Not only did she found the Bob Mayberry Foundation to address critical fundraising needs, but the circle of her compassionate embrace to others fighting similar battles grew ever more expansive over the past decade. Dr. William N. William, Assistant Professor with the Department of Thoracic/Head and Neck Medical Oncology at M.D. Anderson’s Division of Cancer Medicine confirmed the dismal fact that lung cancer research is woefully underfunded at the federal level. The fact that lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, exceeding those of colon, breast and prostate cancers combined, should earn it a prominent place at the funding table, but it has not. One in fourteen will receive a lung cancer diagnosis. Guest speaker Bobbi Filipiak spoke articulately and eloquently of her journey battling stage 4 lung cancer. A post-delivery scan after the birth of her first child revealed a spot on her right lung which was subsequently diagnosed as non-small cell lung cancer. As a nonsmoker, Bobbi was initially shocked until she learned that she was not so unlike other victims. She has endured lung surgery, 32 rounds of radiation, 63 rounds of chemotherapy, 31 rounds of Keytruda and 22 scans. But through it all, she has retained an enduring sense of optimism. “This is the hand I have been dealt. I will not allow this cancer to define who I am. Although cancer will try to control your life, you really are in control of how the story unfolds.” Bobbi’s story is, fundamentally, one of grace under fire and informs all of us about how we face our challenges.

L
AST SUMMER, I got a call that changed my life for the better. It was Cedar Crest College, asking me if I’d like to be the Program Director of the College’s Pan-European Master of Fine Arts program in Creative Writing. I’ve always been a travel junkie, perhaps because I was born and raised in Saudi Arabia and took my first plane ride at two months old. But this involved travel and writing—I had hit my personal jackpot. The Pan-European MFA is a low-residency program that offers writers the opportunity to study fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction writing, or travel writing. We pair incoming students with one of our award-winning faculty mentors, whom they work with throughout the year, and in the summer, we convene for a two-week residency in one of three European cities: Dublin, Ireland; Barcelona, Spain; Vienna, Austria. While abroad, students participate in writing workshops and seminars, as well as attend a multitude of cultural activities—tours, day trips, readings, lectures—in order to learn more about the literature, art, and culture of the host country. Last summer, the residency was held in Barcelona. I loaded my entire family onto a plane, including my six-month-old baby, and we flew east to join the other Cedar Crest students and faculty members for what turned out to be a marvelous adventure. In addition to our more scholarly pursuits, including learning about Spanish and Catalan literature from some of Barcelona’s leading writers and professors, we also lived the good life that only a relaxed Mediterranean city like Barcelona Students hike the mountains at Montserrat can offer—long Spanish lunches, trips to the beach, guided tours of Park Guell, the Sagrada Familia, and the Students at a Barcelona cooking class Picasso museum. Even with a fussy baby in tow, I enjoyed every minute of our time there. My favorite memory is of our graduation ceremony, where we recognized and honored the hard work of our graduating students. It was held in the beautiful and historic Ateneu Barcelones, a maze-like building in the heart of the Gothic Quarter, where marble statues kept watch over us as we handed out the

diplomas and later sipped Cava and nibbled Jamon Iberico at the celebratory reception. I felt such joy in the students’ accomplishments—each had written a book-length manuscript as a master’s thesis and had thrived in mentorship with our dedicated faculty members. And they had done it all with an adventuresome spirit, choosing to travel Europe with a gaggle of fellow writers who could match their passion for the written word, as well as their wanderlust. It was a momentous evening, and we finished it off with a decadent last supper at the Restaurante Asador de Aranda, housed in a historic moderniste mansion where we feasted on the house specialty, grilled lamb. Though I’m back home in the States now, I am reminded of the special nature of our program when I get updates from students and alumni on publishing successes. Recently, students have been shortlisted for the Berlin Prize, published in the Washington Post, and brought out their debut novels. Traveling abroad challenges each of us to be better, more inquisitive writers, and to broaden our perspective on the world. Next summer? Vienna! Interested in finding out more about Cedar Crest College’s Pan-European MFA Program in Creative Writing? Please visit the website at www.mfa.cedar crest.edu. Apply by April 1st to join us in Vienna. Home for the Holidays with Maria & Kyndal! STORY BY CATHIE PARSSINEN PHOTOS BY BRANDI NELLIS

MARIA & KYNDAL IN THE KITCHEN! If it gets hot in the kitchen at Maria Harrington’s home in Flintrock Falls, it’s not because anything is burning but because this mother-daughter team are on fire for fashion! Whether they are baking cookies or preparing the holiday feast, Maria and Kyndal seem artlessly puttogether, even in the kitchen. It’s not their fault—it must be something in the DNA, genetically passed from one to the other. Maria’s fashion-driven career began when she was just a teenager in Florida. She won a contest in design and was offered an internship with a local couture designer and hasn’t looked back since. She has been a buyer and has also worked on the manufacturing side. She was a personal shopper for years before opening her first “Maria’s” boutique in Germantown, not far from Memphis, Tennessee where she soon attracted a celebrity following. The family relocated to Austin in 2009, and Kyndal entered LTHS as a junior. She has been a fixture at Maria’s boutiques since she was 5. After graduating from Texas State, Kyndal worked for two years teaching in inner-city schools in Dallas. But the pull of fashion and of the cosy intimate boutique became irresistible. Both Maria and Kyndal are delighted to be working together again in Lakeway, helping friends and clients discover their inner fashion diva! Stop by the store to see a collection of hip looks and great brands that will make your holiday complete!

Mix about 20 times Add ½ bag of Nestle regular semi-sweet morsels Preheat oven to 365° Spoon onto coated cookie sheet Bake for about 10 minutes, depending how you like them. I like to store them in cookie tins lined with wax paper. That keeps them fresh and crisp for 2 weeks!

OUTRAGEOUSLY ADORABLE in their boots, hats and short dresses, Maria & Kyndal are ready to rock it in the Rover as they get ready to pile in with their gifts for their delivery run. It hardly seems fair that they have an entire store full of trinkets and treasures from which to select gifts for all the people on their list! (Well‌except for the guys!) Their gift run is just one of a number of traditions they share at Christmas time, usually it happens the day before Christmas Eve!
I wonder if Santa can find me a pup just like Midgey?

ORGET YOUR fantasy football scorecard; forget the baseball playoffs; forget about politics and Washington! Let’s get serious here! It’s time to remember the highlights of the greatest decades on earth! Yes! We are invited to revisit the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s—surely a period of momentous historical importance. Greco-Roman Civilization? The Age of Enlightenment? The Renaissance? The Industrial Revolution? Lunar Landings and Space Travel? All of these represent only inconsequential moments in the march of civilization and pale when compared to the signature events of the 1970’s, 1980’s and 1990’s. Ah yes, we have to give King Louis XIV credit for popularizing the high heel! Christian Louboutin owes him a great debt! And the music of the period? Unforgettable! The greatest thing about the musical genius of that era is that we were young when we heard it! And what better occasion to provide this walk down memory lane, celebrated with costumes and music, than a great party to honor Ronda Gray’s 50th Birthday Party! Speaking of costumes! How often have you been to a costume party where the men in attendance gave a nod to the concept of costume with a silly baseball cap? Not at this party! The wigs, the hats, the acres of neon reverberated, competing with the starlight. “Austin Powers” (Richard Halpern) Duncan and Amber Montero, Mindy Bakker, Ida Collins

A storm of balloons! Eddie Money wows the crowd!
A guest list of 350 of Ronda and Kelly’s bff enjoyed fabulous food and drink, a super-charged performance by Eddie Money and his band and a performance of break-dancing by a team from San Antonio whose bodies contorted in amazing configurations. I asked so many people, especially women, what their relationship was to Ronda. And nine times out of ten, each of them responded, “Oh, she’s my best friend!” I do believe it. Ronda has genuineness to her personality and a love of life that is infectious. She gathers the people in her universe together within her own radiant orbit, making each of them feel special and loved. And this celebration was as much a gift to them as it was a celebration for Ronda.

POILER ALERT! You may be looking at pictures of the next Miss Texas Teen USA! Sydney Palmieri—age 16, 5’9”, and a high school junior—is the current Miss Travis County Teen USA. She will compete for the title of Miss Texas Teen USA on November 25-26 in Houston along with approximately 125 other contestants. Sydney is passionate about music. She sings and plays guitar and would love to be a recording artist someday. She has performed at the Steiner Ranch Steakhouse with Tommy Shane Steiner. “Tommy Shane Steiner has been a huge influence—giving me the confidence to pursue music. He challenges me to get out of my comfort zone and has taught me so much about finding myself as an artist.” And in January, Syd will record three original songs written by one of her artistic inspirations, singer/songwriter Drew Womack. Syd is the daughter of Cosmo and Jenny Palmieri of Lake Travis. Like a duck takes to water, Sydney’s attraction to the pageant experience was the natural outgrowth of her family history. Her mother, a true beauty herself, was Miss Georgia USA 1996 and Mrs. Texas America 2004. As Syd notes, “I watched my mom help many girls compete and prepare mentally and physically for their pageants…that got me interested in competing. This will definitely be one of the most life-changing things I’ve ever done. I’m going into this ready to learn more about myself and to take in this awesome experience.”

WHETHER YOU ARE entertaining guests this holiday or attending someone else’s affair, there’s a lot to think about. While it’s easy to remember to get your hair and nails done, skincare is sometimes forgotten. Below are a few strategies to make sure you stand out like the North Star at your big event: Light reflects best off of a smooth surface. Over time, the surface of the skin can become cluttered with dead skin cells and fine hairs called vellus hairs. A medical procedure called Dermaplaning can remove dead skin cells and fine hairs from the skin’s surface, giving it a healthy glow. The week before a big event is not the time for a major overhaul. Procedures like Botox should be done 2-6 weeks before an important outing. Filler can occasionally cause bruising so you will need to plan two weeks in advance for that as well. Lash lengthening products also need a few weeks to work, so it’s best to plan ahead. Running out of my time? Don’t panic. Invest your resources in a mild chemical peel or Clear + Brilliant Laser treatment, followed by platelet rich plasma. With minimal downtime and noticeable results, this combination will make you the belle of the ball. Finally, the right products really can make a difference. Apply Tensage Serum Ampoules by Biopelle nightly for 7 days before a big event. Add radiance to the under eye with Neocutis Lumiere Riche. Finally, apply Skinceuticals A.G.E. Interruptor under makeup for a flawless finish. The friendly and knowledgeable staff at Fresh Dermatology is always available to help make your skincare goals come true.
WHEN LECTURING, Dr. Haase suggests dentists learn occlusion (bite) before trying to make their patients mouths pretty or the “pretty” will fail if the function (bite) isn’t correct. Today, the importance of straight front teeth is taking on an entire new meaning. The mouth is an engineering miracle, considering the precise and simultaneous coordination of the facial muscles, the jaw and the teeth, necessary to allow eating, speaking and functioning as a human. Such precision, required for long- term mouth stability, is measured in microns. The average diameter of a human hair is 25 microns. The most important teeth responsible to protect the human mouth are the front upper and lower six teeth. If these teeth quit functioning correctly, it can be disastrous for the back teeth. No teeth other than the front six teeth should EVER touch when the lower jaw moves forward or sideways! Unfortunately, biting and chewing tends to move the lower teeth forward, hence crowding occurs, correct function ceases and back teeth begin to chip and break. Bite problems can be seen when gum tissue recedes on individual teeth or when back teeth chip or break. We can only re-position the front teeth with crowns or braces, and today nearly half of our orthodontic patients are over forty, with some into their eighties. Patients are living much longer and management of their tooth and jaw function is more important than ever for long term preservation of their smiles.

AS A CHILD-CENTERED LIFE COACH, Courtney Harris specializes in guiding tweens and teens who face anxiety, overwhelming feelings and emotional distance by introducing a set of powerful tools that support them and their parents in developing trust, communication, and authentic connection. Courtney Harris Coaching offers 1:1 sessions and group coaching services to help youth and parents establish or renew strong relationships as they navigate this often challenging transitional time. During 10 years of classroom teaching, Courtney established a record of excellence in relationship and communitybuilding with her teenage students. She also witnessed the limitations of the school environment to meet every need of every student and, consequently, observed many families seeking extra support during the adolescent years. Her own research and a decade of experience working with preadolescents and adolescents confirmed how the pressure to get “good” grades, achieve in athletics, and seek social status can provoke acute anxiety. Witnessing this in the lives of so many students led her to a focus on teen empowerment. This work creates a ripple effect, as each young person engages in deep self-exploration that expands to and affects the rest of the family. Since moving to Austin in 2010, Courtney has mentored over 1,000 young people and their families. From teaching Social and Emotional Learning, to sponsoring community service clubs, to facilitating dialogue-based circles, to publishing a blog for parents, Courtney is dedicated to her work with children and families. She brings compassionate, growth-based practices to families in Central Texas and beyond. The coaching relationship is a therapeutic, creative collaboration between Courtney and her clients. As partners, each looks objectively at the present situation, envisions and explores the ideal future, and creates concrete steps to get there. There is no diagnosis in coaching; instead, the “gems” (what’s beautiful and working) are leveraged as pathways to transformation. There are no implications of “getting fixed;” rather, the inspiration is to improve oneself and one’s relationships. Clients, teens and parents alike, are treated as experts in their own lives; they are agents of change and power comes from within, unlocked by this collaboration. Intentional family systems work is delicate, personal, and challenging, but taking the time to build strong, open connections in the present develops the foundation for secure, life-long relationships. Courtney advocates for empowered families through this intense, yet mindful work.

HE HILLS of Lakeway Country Club, a member of the ClubCorp family of clubs, served as the idyllic host for the 10th Annual ClubCorp Charity Classic, sponsored by Rough Hollow. This charity golf tournament benefitted three different nonprofits: Baylor Scott & White—Central Texas Foundation; Augie’s Quest (an aggressive fundraising effort focused on finding treatments and cures for ALS by supporting the work of the ALS Therapy Development Institute); and ClubCorp Employee Partners Care Foundation, a nonprofit established to help Employee Partners of ClubCorp’s family of Clubs in need of financial assistance in times of crisis. Since its inception in 2007, ClubCorp’s Charity Classic has raised more than $17.3 million benefiting a variety of charities, the local area, and has made a positive impact on many it assists. A portion of the money raised went to help ClubCorp victims of Hurricane Harvey. General Manager of The Hills of Lakeway Country Club, James Walsh, stated “During our Charity Classic event, our members and employee partners work together with sponsors to showcase our commitment to build and enrich lives.”

Hospice Austin’s 2017 Beauty of Life STORY AND PHOTOS BY CATHIE PARSSINEN

N EAGER crowd of Hospice Austin’s supporters gathered at the JW Marriott at the beginning of October for this annual event that always includes a preprogram shopping extravaganza presented by many of Austin’s most beloved boutiques. While support for the mission of Hospice Austin provided the goal for the Emcee Shannon Wolfson, KXAN gathering, and the shopping highlight offered a secondary incentive, the audience knew the keynote address would justify attendance all by itself. Hospice Austin has established a first-class speaker program, inviting guests who can keep a room full of several hundred women silent and off their mobile phones! James J. Farmer III, whose landscape and interior designs exude elegance, comfort and harmony, spoke about the inspirations for his work. He is a prolific author and cook and the Editor-at-Large of Southern Living. It was a “Southern Living” crowd that listened intently, mesmerized by tales of his family and growing up in rural town in Georgia. His grandfather was the 14th member of his family to become a Baptist minister, and Farmer identified himself as a “recovering Baptist,” noting that the Episcopal Church has a good recovery program for this affliction! Speaking with an infectious Georgia drawl, he talked affectionately of his mother of whom he said, “She didn’t even have to open her mouth—her hair was big enough to scream Southern.” She would often confirm a special achievement by saying, “They doubled the crust on that one!” And his mother loved “Carl”. If anyone Carla Cox, Emily George Keynote Speaker: Chef and Author wanted to know who “Carl” was, she James J. Farmer III Maureen Staloch, owner of Redbird would point to her fingernails. So, as Boutique, Stephani Kagan Farmer explained, “My shrimp is ready when it’s the perfect shade of “carl.” One of the important mantras Farmer learned from his mother was that people eat with their eyes first. Farmer believes deeply that we feed Dr. Joni Wallace, Susan Lubin, Marcia Levy people, body and soul at our tables. Farmer’s latest book, A Place to Call Vicki Eidman, Sharon Wilkes Simmons, Melinda Cobert Home, joins the list of his other bestselling titles. ESPITE THE wind and rain, Texas 4000 for Cancer had their most successful Tribute Gala to date. The funds raised during the 2017 Tribute Gala at the JW Marriott, along with what was raised by the riders throughout the year, resulted in over $1 million in fundraising in 2017. The supporters of Texas 4000 were determined to not let Hurricane Harvey affect the evening, and one board member even drove round trip from Houston on Friday morning to ensure his auction items made it to the event. The 70 riders who biked from Austin to Alaska in the effort to fight cancer were celebrated by the 550 Tribute Gala guests, comprised of alumni, families, and supporters, as their amazing achievement was recognized. Videos portraying the 70-day summer ride reflected the many emotions the riders’ experienced, and shared some of the stories for why they ride. The Longhorn Network even a created a feature piece on the summer ride, and Texas 4000 played a teaser trailer during the event for everyone to enjoy. The 2017 Texas 4000 riders celebrated throughout the evening as they became Texas 4000 alumni, and the organization inspired others to help put the 15th Texas 4000 team on the road next summer.

O
VER THE past decade, Waterways has covered at least a dozen fundraising galas presented by both the Lakeway Police Foundation and the Bee Cave Police Foundation that support officers of the two departments and their families. These events have been held at hotel ballrooms, and the attire has been dressy-if not black tie. And the officers do “clean up real nice!” However, the draw of riding a Harley through the hills that hug Hwy 71W, headed for the Texas Rangers Heritage Center in Fredericksburg for a presentation honor-

ing and supporting law enforcement (with a side of BBQ) and then on to Luckenbach for an after-party may have had a lot more appeal for the officers! Not all of them attended, but several Lakeway police officers and other Central Texas law enforcement “Rode for the Badge!” Both Trevor Mathas and Steve Adams from the LPD Motor Unit joined the motorcycle brigade. And check out Andrea Greig…she looks serious! The early morning event began with a time-honored Texas tradition: coffee and breakfast tacos! The delicious fuel for the ride was provided by High 5 in Lakeway. At 10:30 am, kickstands were up, and only the open road lay ahead. Celebrity riders included Tony Schumacher, a 8X NHRA Top Fuel World Champion with 81 career wins, and Senior, TV personality on “Full Throttle Saloon.” During the presentation at the Texas Rangers Heritage Center, Lake Travis High School student, Lindsay Edwards, was honored for creating the winning submission for the design for the 2017 Ride for the Badge Logo. You can see her award-winning design on the first page of this feature. The greater Lake Travis Community enjoys a remarkable degree of safety. However, increasing growth has brought new challenges. We recognize that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and are indebted to those who provide the prevention.

HE PRESENTATION of the 2017 Harvey Penick Award to Tomi and Pete Winstead highlighted the Caritas of Austin’s 10th Annual “Words of Hope” dinner and program on September 14th at the JW Marriott. For 26 years, the Harvey Penick Award for Excellence in the Game of Life has honored a prominent community leader whose achievements as a steward of community trust mirror the accomplishments of the first recipient, golf legend Harvey Penick. The list of accomplishments that flesh out Tomi and Pete Winstead’s past 30 years in Austin is long indeed and reveals just why they were chosen for this prestigious honor. It reads like a love letter to Austin, the community they call home and one that they have been proud to serve with their time, their talent and their treasure. Following the award presentation, featured speaker Ron Hall, author of Same Kind of Different as Me and What Difference Do It Make returned to share the powerful story of his life-changing friendship with a homeless drifter named Denver Moore that he met through his wife, who volunteered at a homeless shelter. chronicled the story of this friendship at the inaugural Words of Hope ten years ago. The film adaptation of Some Kind of Different as Me will premiere in theaters on October 20, 2017. Caritas is one of the oldest charities in Austin, founded on May 29, 1984 by Father (subsequently Monsignor) Richard McCabe. Despite its Catholic origins, McCabe’s ecumenical outreach built a broad base of interfaith support for Caritas that has endured across the decades. Caritas celebrates 53 years of service to the needy in Austin, providing food, housing, medical care, refugee services and job search assistance. It gives priority to a “housing-first” approach, and to a “housing everywhere” approach, believing that the full integration of people in neighborhoods throughout the city will create a more vibrant Austin for all.

ANCE INSTITUTE, in its 10th season under the direction of founder/owner Linda Holland, presented Dance Institute Gala 2017 benefiting the New York City Dance Alliance College Scholarship Foundation on October 21st at 7:30 pm, at the beautiful Austin ISD Performing Arts Center. The NYCDA Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit charity and awards millions of dollars to dancers across the country to help them realize the dream of pursuing a college education. Dance Institute is the home studio to many outstanding, award-winning elite dancers who compete at the national level, including at The NYCDA National Finale Competition each summer. Past students from DI have received NYCDA Foundation college scholarships to The Julliard School, Marymount Manhattan and Point Park University. Dance Institute Gala 2017 is a professional production where DI’s advanced dancers share the stage with world renowned artists! Industry professionals from the Cincinnati Ballet and the Richmond Ballet were guest stars for this charitable event. Cervilio Amador and Melissa Gelfin, principal dancers from the Cincinnati Ballet, performed pieces from both Romeo & Juliet and Le Corsaire. Maggie Small and Mate Szentes from the Richmond Ballet performed the leads in Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake (from Act II). Also premiering were Darrell Moultrie’s Instances of the Invigorated and Francisco Gella’s Rachmaninov Piano Concerto. Holland states that producing a show of this caliber is a huge undertaking. “I am always looking for opportunities for my students to learn. Dancing Swan Lake Act 2 was a first for us as my dancers had never danced in a full-length Ballet nor done corps de ballet work. With an average age of 13.9, my dancers were exceptional! Both Cervilio and Maggie have taught at DI’s Summer Intensives and have watched the school and dancers grow. We have talked about doing a show like this for years but needed to wait until our dancers were ready for the task. Our guests were impressed with our dancing and professionalism and blended quickly into the production. I couldn’t be more pleased. Bravo! What a huge success for our inaugural Gala and fund raiser!”
