Across Austin, and across the state, there are millions of UT fans who, after two straight seasons without a Bowl Game invitation, are anxious—if not insistent—that UT return to the ranks of College Football prominence. For decades excellence has been an expectation, greatness the target, for Longhorn fandom.
ABOUT THE COVER
The Hermans Return to Austin STORY BY PHIL PONEBSHEK | PHOTOS BY JIM SIGMON
I
T’S BEEN a 19 year odyssey for Tom and Michelle Herman, starting with the long drive from California to Sequin in the summer of 1998 when Tom took his first coaching gig as grad assistant at Texas Lutheran making $5,000 a year. The college sweethearts couldn’t afford to continue living together at the time, and Michelle returned to California as Tom (who had played college ball at the tiny California Lutheran College) coached wide receivers and took classes. A Presidential Scholar who double-majored in business and marketing and graduated cum laude, Tom had goals to reach the esteemed shores of college football’s elite head coaching positions, and both partners understood that the voyage would not necessarily be direct or smooth. After a year at Texas Lutheran, Tom moved up I-35 to Austin, getting a break in the form of a grad assistant job at the much more prestigious Longhorn football program in 1999. Tom joined UT early in the Mack Brown era—1999 was Mack’s second season, and the Longhorns ranked 21st in the country, improving to 11th rank in the AP Poll in 2000. But while the prestige and visibility of his new job was better, the money wasn’t. Michelle had moved to join him, but after 9 months ended up returning to California for a higher paying job with an LA investment firm, sending him money to help cover his rent. As Tom told Sports Illustrated, “She carried me, for a long time.” 2001 brought major changes for the Hermans. Tom graduated with his Master’s in Education; Tom and Michelle wed, and the couple moved to

Huntsville where Tom became an Assistant Coach at Sam Houston State and got a bump to $10,000 a year. For three years, Michelle and Tom scraped by, she working a variety of jobs while he slowly worked his way up to a $35,000 salary as the Bearkats made the semi-finals of the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs. The next port for Tom was becoming an Offensive Coordinator, beating a goal he had set for himself by one year. This took a move to San Marcos, where the Hermans lived for two years, before the winds of football fate took him on an ever ascending path to Houston (Rice), then Ames Iowa (Iowa State), and finally to Columbus Ohio. In Columbus, after a period of 12 years, Herman returned to the ranks of elite NCAA football programs, this time as Offensive Coordinator under the legendary Head Coach of Ohio State, Urban Meyer. And in 2014, Herman’s 3rd year as a Buckeye coach, he won his first NCAA Championship ring as Ohio State captured the National Title. Tom’s excellence was evident—the Buckeyes offense ranked 4th in the nation, and they scored 42 points a game in their NCAA Semifinal victory over #1 ranked Alabama, and in the Championship Game against #2 ranked Oregon. Herman was awarded the Broyles award, an honor given to the best assistant coach in college football. Many assistant coaches in an elite program like the one at Ohio State (where assistant coaches earn more than many collegiate head coaches) would enjoy the safe harbor of working for a coach like Meyer, reveling

in the prominence and success of a perennial top 10 team. But Herman had also set for himself a target of becoming an NCAA head coach by age 40. In 2015, on schedule, he took over as Head Coach at the University of Houston, a mediocre program in the low profile Conference USA. Money woes no longer plagued the Hermans, as Tom was signed for $1.35 million to coach the Cougars, and after a wildly successful debut season as a Head Coach where his 8th ranked team finished the season 13-1, the University more than doubled his salary to $3 million. Meanwhile, by the middle of the 2016 season, the flagship program in Texas—the University of Texas Longhorns—was floundering, and Coach Charlie Strong’s leash was getting shorter and shorter with each loss, following a promising opening win over Notre Dame. The Longhorns, a team Forbes Magazine ranks as the “Most Valuable NCAA Football Franchise”, have expectations to meet. While the players clamored for Strong to be retained for 2017, almost instantly after the home loss to TCU to end UT’s second consecutive 5-7 season, Strong was on his way out. And Texas announced that former Graduate Assistant Tom Herman would be “coming home” to Austin … this time with a 5 year/$28.75 million contract. Herman signals a big change at UT from his predecessor. Both came from

very successful stints at lesser programs (Strong led a moribund Louisville to a #13 ranking in 2012). But Strong’s reputation as a defensive-minded coach contrasts with Herman’s earned stature as one of the nation’s top offensive coordinators. Their style of coaching reflects this, with Herman’s modern, high risk-high-reward style of play contrasting with Strong’s more conventional, run-first/stop-the-run mold. Herman is also fifteen years younger than Strong; at 42, he is the youngest Longhorn Head Coach since Fred Akers. And recruits may be appreciating that difference. Just last week the #1 prospect in the state, Houston Lamar cornerback Anthony Cook, told ESPN, “When Coach Strong was there … it was kind of dead, there was no energy and no one was laying a hat and hitting at practice. When I went to a practice (with Herman’s staff), it was up and competitive.” The Hermans celebrated their 16th wedding anniversary last May as they settled into their role as Head Coach and First Lady of UT Football. Michelle’s Twitter feed already has almost 10,000 followers. Along with all of UT Fandom, Herman has another supporter—former Buckeye boss Urban Meyer. The Statesman interviewed Meyer following Herman’s hiring as Head Coach for a program with as much history . . . and as much pressure . . . as Ohio State’s. “I think he’s ready for the task, and he’s always felt very strongly about the University of Texas,” Meyer said about his former assistant, who he also noted is “A great person, a great family man.” Reports coming from the 40 Acres are that Herman is changing the culture, instilling a sense of organization and responsibility within the program and among the players that he found lacking when he arrived on campus. Perhaps the odyssey that Tom and Michelle have endured as he’s sailed up the college ranks will end here in Austin. Their 12-year-old daughter Priya has changed cities 5 times, and along with her brothers Maverick (9) and TD (3) will once again be making new friends in a new neighborhood. But as his predecessor all too quickly found out, contracts are no guarantee of a long tenure as UT’s Head Coach, and the performance of the Longhorns over the next two seasons will be critical to Herman’s ability to finally anchor his family in a town which desperately wants to embrace a winner for a long, long time to come.

Blast to the past at Luck Reunion
Luck Reunion
Lucas Nelson, Willie Nelson Willie with family and friends
STORY BY CATHIE PARSSINEN PHOTOS BY PATTI PIESZCHALA
T
HE ANNUAL Luck Reunion occurs at the same time as SXSW Music Festival, and it is a counterpoint to the iconic, global, music industry beast that electrifies Austin every March. That beast is lucrative. SXSW 2016 generated $325.3 million for the Austin economy. Located far from the Austin skyline, the small “town” of Luck was built on Willie’s ranch for the 1986 film, Red Headed Stranger, and both the old-timey Western setting and the music transport fans to an alternate version of Texas reality. The Luck Reunion connects an audience not only hungry to see and hear the legendary Willie Nelson but also hungry to immerse themselves in an undiluted taste of Texan cultural identity. This identity, like all others, is infected by shifts in the physical and cultural milieu. Change is pervasive and inevitable, and although Austin’s economic engine brings benefits of new jobs and more money, there is also a sense of loss and mourning about a style of life that once was and is no more. As T.R. Fehrenbach notes in his epic book, Lone Star: A History of Texas and Texans: Already, certain Texas chauvinisms are dying; Texans are revising their own mythology. When they have lost it altogether and when the officeworking, car-driving Texan is completely indistinguishable from his Northern counter-part, the history of Texas, as Texas, will be done. At Luck, amongst the music of Texas singer-songwriters—the poets and wordsmiths of Texas culture—that identity and that history come alive again.

Christian Wallace, writing for Texas Monthly, wrote a brilliant tribute to Willie. “Nelson threw us a curveball by adding a tune from his forthcoming album to the setlist. On “Still not Dead,” Willie sings, “Don’t bury me, I’ve got a show to play/I woke up still not dead again today.” The song shines as yet another example of his wry sense of humor, though the recent losses of Leon Russell and Merle Haggard paint the context surrounding the comedy with a black brush. Death, that great egalitarian, is a biological inevitability for all of us. But if ever there is someone able to indefinitely postpone his ride with the dark horseman, I know the 2,500 people in Luck on Thursday—who closed the night singing “Will the Circle Be Unbroken”—were hoping that person is Willie.”

OR OVER three decades, St. David’s Community Health Foundation has presented a signature series of unique parties and special events that benefit the needs of the health community. Proceeds from Toast of the Town events support the W. Neal Kocurek St. David’s Scholarship Fund. In honor of Dr. Kocurek’s legacy as a visionary civic leader, who served as longtime President and CEO of St. David’s Health Care system, the Fund provides college scholarships to graduates from surrounding counties who are interested in pursuing health-related careers. Since this program began, nearly 300 scholarships have been awarded. Supporters of this worthy cause celebrated from April 15th through May 13th, attending 21 Toast of the Town parties. The 2017 season concluded with Urban Cowboy at the Range, the final party. The Range at Austin is a 52,000 square foot extensive entertainment facility with a lavish private club. It offers gunsmithing, training and instruction, and state of the art shooting lanes. Guests, dressed in Urban Cowboy attire, feasted on wild game cuisine from Chef Misty Lowe of Austin Catering, and DJ Johnny Bravo provided entertainment. The total amount raised during the 2017 Toast of the Town season was more than $505,000, which was matched 2:1 by the Foundation, providing a total of more than $1.5 million for the Neal Kocurek Scholarship Program. Boater tie up at The Gnarly Gar to get their cards stamped and have a bite.
T Ready to roll!
HE LAKE Travis Power Boat Association (LTPBA) sponsored The Lone Star Thunder Run, a benefit for the Austin Make-A-Wish® Foundation on Saturday, July 15th. Members of LTPBA hail from dozens of Lake Travis communities and share a passion for safe, go-fast boating! A poker run to raise money for Make-A-Wish® gave a worthy purpose to the pleasures of boating on the lake on a beautiful summer day. Lone Star Thunder Run boaters started their engines late Saturday morning with an itinerary of stops at participating marinas and restaurants on Lake Travis. And those engines did reverberate like thunder! Stops included the Lakeway Marina, Gnarly Gar, Sundancer Grill, North Shore Marina at the Hollows, Beachside Billy’s, Shack 512, the Lantern Bar & Grill at Briarcliff and Cow Creek Cove. In addition to the punch they received by attending the mandatory Captain’s safety meeting, boaters presented their registration cards and were given a punch at each stop. Players could draw a card for each stop made, with the possibility of drawing a minimum of 5 cards or a maximum of 9 cards from which to build a hand. Everyone returned to Ernie’s on the Lake by 7 pm for the drawing of cards and the announcement of the winning hands. First Place winners, Renee and David Vogelstang, donated their winnings to Make-A-Wish®. Cory Fleitz, President of the Lake Travis Power Boat Association, summarized the results, “We were able to raise $25K. According to

HE RESERVE at Lake Travis is nestled on 3.5 miles of deep-water lakefront in Spicewood on the gorgeous South shore of Lake Travis. Pictured here is the grand reveal of the reimagined transformation of an old Texas-style horse barn into a game and entertainment-filled activity barn. This new activity barn is located within The Reserve’s enclave of urbaninspired contemporary farmhouses. Homeowners of the Reserve, and special guests, gathered together to enjoy this latest amenity. All the elements from the original structure have been repurposed, creating the updated and rustic contemporary design. This old horse barn was turned into a luxe game room perfectly suited for relaxing afternoons and recreational adventures with family and friends. Features include: shuffleboard, an outdoor kitchen and BBQ area, reading porch with two fireplaces, ping pong tables, foosball and big screen TV’s. Pauline Reese performed as neighbors gathered to celebrate this wonderful addition to their community.

match for an LT team whose offense rolled in the championship game, scoring 52 points, with just 4 incompletions. LT was aggressive from the start, going deep on the first play for 6, and then following with a 2-point conversion. Receivers Hudson Card, Gray Sandlin, Kyle Eaves, Sterling Hupp, and Nick Villarreal each found the end zone with connections from QB Peyton Janecek. The defense also played well on the way to a 52-33 victory. The defensive play of the game was a momentum changer, when Max Foit intercepted a 2-point conversion at the goal line, and in rugby-style and 5 pitches later, Will Richardson took it to the house for 2 points. Lake Travis Football Teams Sweep 7on7! STORY BY COACH ROSS HAMANN, LT VARSITY; COACH GREG JANECEK, LT JV; COACH JIM BALLARD, LT FRESHMAN PHOTOS BY SHELIA PARODI, VARSITY; KAREN HUPP, JV & FRESHMAN
LTHS VARSITY by Ross Hamann Some skeptics believed this would be a “down” year for the Lake Travis football powerhouse. The 7on7 season was a perfect way to start proving those skeptics wrong. The season had a rocky beginning with the team only qualifying for the State Championships in the 3rd and final State Qualifying Tournament. There were struggles on both sides of the ball but the guys continued to gel as a team, never giving up on the end goal of winning the ultimate prize. Once Lake Travis arrived at the State 7on7 Championships it was all about one play at a time. If the team created one great play at a time, they would have a chance to win. They did exactly that during the 2 days of intense competition. There were some amazing individual efforts but, all in all, the players supported each other every play. This team environment is what Lake Travis football is all about. They had to make one final stop against Waxahachie to win the State Championship. After playing 5 games in intense heat all day, Lake Travis did what they do best: they came together as a team. They made that huge stop, officially winning the Texas State 7on7 Championship, proving yet again that Lake Travis will be a force to be reckoned with in 2017.
LTHS FRESHMAN by Jim Ballard This Freshman team achieved the goal they set after the 2016 season of winning the State Championship. The players committed to the Lake Travis system and the work required to achieve that goal. Coach Jim Ballard could not be prouder of this group of players. “I have coached the core group of this team since they were in elementary school,” Ballard reflects. “Watching the boys grow into young men of such good character is so rewarding for me. The parents of the players have raised their sons well, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have some positive influence on them. Coach William Yarnell is the best unpaid offensive coach in Texas,” Ballard declares. The championship round of the State Tournament tested the mettle of the players. During the last three games, including the championship game, the team came from behind to win in the last minute of the game. The coaching staff, including Tanner Gillette and Marcus Pate, repeatedly preached to the players, “When your faith is tested, you learn to work through the challenge and that creates patience. Patience and hard work produce good things in life.” This team earned it.
LTHS JV by Coach Greg Janecek The 2020 Class from Lake Travis looked to improve upon their 2nd place finish at state in 2016. To prepare, they competed in several varsity tournaments throughout the spring. Their efforts paid off, sweeping pool-play, then winning close games in the quarter and semi-final games, including a come-frombehind win against Houston Cy Fair 2019, to get another chance at the title. Everything clicked in the championship game against a strong Dallas Richardson squad whose QB, coincidently, is a cousin of LT’s Charlie Brewer. Although Richardson played well, they were no

Lakeway Spine Center LAKEWAY SPINE CENTER is an integrated clinic offering chiropractic care, non-surgical spinal decompression, clinical massage therapy and acupuncture. Our skilled team’s mission of tailored, individual treatment combines the right therapies to accelerate healing. Dr. Andrea Luise is a Nationally Board Certified Spinal Decompression Specialist. Her training allows for the dedicated management of disc disorders, such as disc herniations, disc bulges, sciatica, and spinal stenosis. Non-surgical spinal decompression helps correct the disc issue at hand without changing the integrity of the disc. It is a gentle, safe approach with an extremely high effective rate, 86-91%. Dr. Andrea offers a complimentary consultation for all new patients to determine the appropriate treatment. If imaging is needed, she will refer out for a spinal MRI to determine the specific location and severity of the disc condition. If an MRI has been done, she will review the images or the report to assess further treatment, with recommendations for a customized treatment plan or a referral to the appropriate physician. Rarely is an issue solely a muscle problem or a joint problem. Muscles connect to joints (via tendons). This is why we offer integrated care, to treat each person comprehensively. The combination of chiropractic care along with massage therapy or acupuncture allows for a faster, more complete healing pattern. Lakeway Spine Center has been treating patients of Lakeway, Bee Cave, Steiner Ranch, and Hudson Bend since 2006. Lake Travis is the community we care for! We see newborns through seniors and would be honored to care for your family. 1213 RR 620 S., Ste 203, Lakeway, Texas 512-402-1881 www.lakewayspine.com

IGITAL DENTISTRY IS BASED RIGHT HERE IN AUSTIN! One of the leaders of the industry is Dr. Todd Ehrlich. Dr. Ehrlich has been on the forefront of digital dentistry for 15 years and is a consultant for the biggest and most innovative companies in dentistry. His passion for high-tech dentistry has given him the opportunity to lecture across the U.S. and internationally to thousands of dentists. He completes live patient demonstrations at the annual American Dental Association meeting where thousands of dentists discover the attributes of digital dentistry. As in any industry, dentistry benefits by going digital. Dr. Ehrlich explains: “Patients want the best technology, and I believe digital dentistry is the way to go. We no longer need impressions or two visits to complete our crowns and veneers. We simply scan the teeth into a computer, design the restorations in a computer program, and then mill them. It is simple, fast, and extremely accurate. The best thing is that the patient does NOT have to come back. No temporary! Done! My favorite cases are our one-day makeovers: veneers in a day! Digital dentistry also includes techniques for diagnosing: X-rays. Digital x-rays have come a long way and most dentists are using them, but what makes Dr. Ehrlich stand apart is that he utilizes three-dimensional x-rays much like a CT scanner. This allows him to digitally plan dental implants and diagnose tooth problems that are very difficult to see on traditional x-ray views. He is one of the few general dentists in the US to even have this capability. Dr. Ehrlich opened a new office and training facility at the Westlake Dermatology Building on Bee Caves Road. The
Digital Enamel Education Center has taught doctors from around the country and locally. Dr. Ehrlich explains, “Because I am at the forefront of technical dentistry, we were able to build a new facility that represents that in the Westlake Dermatology Building. I am glad to call the area my home and help my neighbors with the highest technology in dentistry.” Smile Designs • Todd Ehrlich, DDS 8825 Bee Caves Road Suite E, Austin, Texas 78746 (In the Westlake Dermatology Building) www.WestlakeSmileDesigns.com (512) 263-8332

N JULY 10 family, friends and supporters gathered at the specially adapted smart home currently under construction for U.S. Army Corporal Alan Babin, Jr. (Ret.) to write words of gratitude and inspiration on the walls of the recently framed home. The construction of a home of his own in Lakeway has been made possible by the support of the Gary Sinise Foundation. The home will have wheelchair-accessible doorways, mobility devices to assist in his transport and appliances at eye level. It will provide Alan the freedom he never thought he’d have. As his mother, Rosie Babin said, “The independence that this home is providing to him, and to us, will allow us to continue to grow and heal, together, and empower us to continue to support other wounded warfighters and their families.” In 2003, medic Alan “Doc” Babin, Jr. suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen while courageously rushing to aid another solider. After dozens of surgeries, contracting meningitis, having a stroke and losing parts of many internal organs, a nursing home seemed the only option. With hard work, sheer determination and perseverance—and the unconditional support and advocacy of his family, Alan was able to live in his parent’s home. And soon, he will move into his own home.

Lake Travis Independent Living AGING BRINGS A variety of health concerns, and especially important among these is eye health. Learning the warning signs of age-related vision problems may help alleviate some of these concerns and identify a path to better health and a happier retirement. Many eye-related diseases do not have early symptoms and can develop painlessly. Changes in vision are often not noticed until vision is quite impaired. A dry desert climate can increase the effects of dry eyes, so it is important to know the distinction between a simple case of dry eyes and something more serious. Failing vision in seniors can lead to a host of other complications: the inability to drive, increased risk of falls, less mobility, loss of independence, social withdrawal—all of which, in turn, can cause anxiety and depression. Wise lifestyle choices, regular eye exams and early detection of disease can significantly improve the chances of maintaining good vision and overall eye health as one ages. Also, it is important to note that health problems affecting other parts of your body may impact vision. Diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure) or taking medications that have eye-related side effects can increase risk. The American Optometric Association recommends annual eye examinations for everyone over age 60. See your doctor of optometry immediately if you notice any changes in your vision. Lake Travis Independent Living is slated to open its doors to seniors in Lakeway in August and will offer the perfect lakeside lifestyle. Many of the original founding officers and members were present to help commemorate the accomplishments of the past two and a half decades of “Service above Self.” More than 33,000 Rotary Clubs operate in over 200 countries and geographical areas, forming a global network of business and professional leaders who volunteer their time and talents in service of humanitarian projects within their communities and throughout the world. Rotarians worldwide live by a 24-word code of ethics, called the 4-Way Test. Adopted by Rotary International in 1943, this simple philosophy guides the actions of all members: “Of the things we think, say and do: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?” Kristine Shelstad solicits remarks from June Grodin

The presence of June Grodin, wife of the late Gerry Grodin who served as President from 1999-2000, transported many members back to the early days of the Club. June and Gerry Grodin were among the first 10 founding members and often catered the luncheon meetings when the group was still in its infancy. Kristine Shelstad, installed as 2017-2018 President at the celebration, honored June with a lifetime membership in the Club. “You are a living repository of our history in this community!” Barker Keith, in Africa with the Rotary 3D Limb Project, was honored in absentia as “Rotarian of the Year.” Longtime Rotarian Buzz Buzzard received the Rotary Club Hall of Fame Award, and retiring President, Keith Falcone, received the second Paul Harris Award. Kristine Shelstad was installed as 2017-2018 President.

HE BARTON SPRINGS Bathhouse opened its doors for the first time in 1947. Through the years, it became a genuine Austin icon, along with the pool and the springs it supports. In this year of the 70th birthday of the Bathhouse, Barton Springs Conservancy and Honorary Chair Luci Baines Johnson, who also celebrates her 70th birthday this year, moved toward the goal of rehabilitating the Bathhouse for a contemporary audience. To support that goal, the Conservancy hosted two interconnected events, a 70th Birthday Bash fundraiser at the Driskill Hotel on May 11th, and a 70th Birthday Splash and Plunge at Barton Springs on May 13th. The evening at the Driskill included testimonials honoring Luci for her rich history as a preservationist of Texas treasures. These included a poem by Liz Garton Scanlon and remarks made by Conservancy colleagues and dear friends. In addition, Darden Smith collaborated with Luci to compose a song about the Springs, titled “Cool Waters.” Smith and fellow musicians Eliza Gilkyson and Carrie Rodriguez performed the song at the event, and, from her table, Luci sang the words along with the musicians.

HE BARTON SPRINGS Conservancy invited fans of the Springs to a grand birthday party to celebrate the seven-decade history of the Barton Springs Bathhouse on Saturday, May 13. A parade around the pool deck and the Bathhouse itself kicked off the festivities that ended in an exuberant group plunge into the chilly waters. H-E-B served plenty of birthday cakes to refuel party-goers after their celebratory swim. Designed by architect Dan Driscoll, the Barton Springs Bathhouse is an architectural and historical Austin treasure and a beloved local gathering spot in the heart of Zilker Park. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been designated a Historic Landmark by both the City of Austin and the State of Texas. After 70 years of use and enjoyment, the original Bathhouse is in need of repair, rehabilitation, and updating. The Barton Springs Conservancy has stepped up to the plate to accomplish this goal.

NTREPRENEURS and philanthropists John Paul DeJoria and Christopher Milam held a groundbreaking ceremony and celebration in Bee Cave, Texas on the site where they will construct The Backyard, a 50-acre fully integrated live-work-play creative corporate campus. They were joined by the Mayor of Bee Cave the Honorable Caroline Murphy at the ceremony. “Today marks a special day as we officially break ground on The Backyard, bringing back live performances of popular music and adding symphonic, theatrical, ballet and operatic performances. In doing so we are creating a special place for local residents and visitors to experience the beauty of sound, within the beauty of the Texas Hill Country,” said John Paul DeJoria. “This project, once completed, will bring a storied Austin venue back to the community and create a totally unique lifestyle around it.” “As residents and visitors flock to the Texas Hill Country, the development of this creative campus will bring thousands of jobs to the area and drive millions of dollars in new tax revenue for our City and the region annually,” said Mayor Murphy. “The Backyard will also further position our community as a destination and a lifestyle that is both unique and authentic to the region, while also maintaining Bee Cave’s long-standing legacy of live entertainment.” “All of us at some time in our lives have a dream. Mine was to have a music venue of national stature in the Texas Hill Country. When completed, we will be able to host both national and local performances for all to come and enjoy under the starlit skies of the great State of Texas,” said Tim O’Connor, President of the Live Oak Amphitheater. Currently being developed by IDM, the project is being designed by a group of local architects including: Bercy Chen Studio, Dick
Clark + Associates, and Steinbomer, Bramwell & Vrazel Architects; along with countless sub-consultants, engineers and specialty designers. There will be two general contractors on site, Hoar Construction and Lott Brothers Construction. The project will open in phases beginning in the fall of 2018. The Backyard will include: • Two live music venues: The Live Oak Amphitheater and the Glenn • A 4-star resort hotel: The Nelson • An advanced music recording studio • Multiple restaurants and bars including Bloom, Rise, and Above, among others • A luxury residential community: Ethan’s View Condominiums and Townhomes • Multiple Outdoor Parks, Amenities, and a Community Teaching Garden at the Old Backyard • 12 Class-A corporate offices • Two Tier-3 data centers • A distributed energy center (DEC) to power the Backyard Microgrid “We are dedicated to preserving the beauty and lifestyle of the Texas Hill Country while finding thoughtful ways to share it with the world,” said Mr. Milam. “By creating a fully integrated and environmentally conscious community, we can offer a contemporary lifestyle that brings together the dynamic benefits of the Austin area with the beauty and rhythm of the Texas Hill Country.” International Development Management is an Austin-based real estate development firm with significant worldwide experience in privately sponsored, large-scale projects. IDM seeks to enhance the living and working lives of people by improving their communities with environmentally conscious developments, while concurrently maximizing returns for its investors. IDM continues to demonstrate that these are not mutually exclusive endeavors. We Create the Places Where Your Life Happens.

HE SECOND annual charity golf tournament and concert, benefitting Help Our Wounded, raised more than $180,000! Help Our Wounded, founded by Rosie Babin in 2009, is a local nonprofit that provides help and resources to seriously wounded service members and their caregivers. Dan and Peggy Pitts, Golf Steering Committee Chairs, collaborated with their team to ensure this 2-day event was brilliantly successful. A dinner with silent and live auctions at the Sheraton Georgetown preceded a day on the links at Cimmaron Hills. Keynote speaker and special guest COL (Ret.) Tom Magness, spoke inspirationally of leadership. Presenting sponsor Keystone Concrete Placement, as well as the other sponsors, helped to make the dinner, concert, and golf tournament such a success that sponsors and players want to be included again next year. So SAVE THE DATE! The dinner will be June 9, 2018 and the golf tournament on June 11, 2018. On December 31, Help Our Wounded will be holding its annual New Year’s Eve Gala at the Sonesta Hotel in Bee Cave, Texas. Celebrating Local Business SOUTHERN ROOTS A group of hair stylists who worked together for years and formed a bond like a family were thrilled to come together to share their artistry with the City of Lakeway when Fran Davis opened the salon Southern Roots. Southern Roots, a unique, upscale full-service salon located in Oak Grove Plaza, offers a wide variety of hair services including haircuts, color, highlights, bailage, Brazilian blowouts, express color/highlights, Keratin treatments, blow outs, and styling. Opened in October 2016, this salon stands out from the competition for its cozy, warm, and laid-back environment. Davis created Southern Roots as a place where clients come in and get their hair done, see an old friend, or make a new one over a cup of coffee or glass of champagne, and leave feeling fabulous about themselves and their hair. She wanted it to be a place where clients leave feeling more beautiful than ever, and excited to return in the future for their hair needs. Davis stated, “Everyone in the salon is from the south and that is what makes us proud of our southern roots.” She declared that her favorite part about being a hairstylist is making people happy. She went on to say, “It gives me such a sense of joy knowing that I play a small part in helping others feel better about themselves by giving them the best hair they can have. As the owner of the salon and part time stylist, I love seeing my teammates achieve success and work together!” Though born in Louisiana, Davis moved to the Lakeway area 18 years ago and attended Lake Travis Middle and High School. She and her high school sweetheart, Lance Davis, were married in 2013 and have a 20-month-old son, Peyton. Davis attended Baldwin Beauty School in Austin soon after high school, and the other Southern Roots girls studied at Avenue 5 and Nuvani Institute. Davis has been a stylist for 12 years, and the other girls who work at the salon have been stylists for approximately 8-10 years. With so many years of combined experience, the stylists at Southern Roots stay current with the

The 2017 Parade of Homes™ AT THE PENINSULA IN ROUGH HOLLOW, LAKEWAY
L
EGENDS COMMUNITIES and Crescent Communities hosted the Spring 2017 Home Builders Association (HBA) of Greater Austin Parade of Homes™ at The Peninsula at Rough Hollow. This annual event showcases the newest trends in construction, building design, interior décor, and landscaping in one of the nation’s most vibrant real estate communities. This year marks the third Parade of Homes™ tour held at Rough Hollow within 10 years. This Parade of Homes™, specifically, was one of the most highly anticipated ever due to The Peninsula’s spectacular views of the Hill Country and Lake Travis. Nestled high above Lake Travis, and just a short ride from downtown Austin, The Peninsula at Rough Hollow offers an unparalleled lake living experience. Located in a naturally secluded, private enclave, it offers a limited number of lakeside, estate home sites priced from the $300s to $1 million-plus. This tour featured five prestigious custom-built homes by awardwinning builders specifically selected for this showcase vent—Arbogast Custom Homes, Jenkins Design + Build, Lake Travis Builders, Laurel Haven Homes, and Triton Custom Homes Inc. Custom home builders Arbogast Custom Homes, Jenkins Design + Build, and Triton Custom Homes
Inc. used farmhouse and barn themes as a design inspiration. The classic farmhouse and modern-day interpretation of the Arbogast home suggests a timeless sensation and style, as rustic and modern features are blended throughout the home. This unique home features a Chef’s kitchen, upgraded appliances, and a heavenly pool and spa. As noted in the Official HBA Guide to the Parade, the architects from The Jenkins Design & Build sought to “Raise the bar on the barn” by creating a home “blurring the lines between inside and out.” Although the home possesses the rustic charms of a barn, the architects outfitted the home with state-of-the-art amenities, and sleek The Jenkins Farmhouse Jenkins Design & Build

The Hilltop Transitional Barn was the inspiration for the home built by Triton, and the style that guided the architects was contemporary luxury. With the open kitchen/living/dining, 270 degrees of Lake Travis and Hill Country views, and oversized pool with cascading waterfall, this extravagant contemporary home stayed true to the guiding inspiration from start to finish. All three of these homes exude charm, comfort, and elegance. The Laurel Haven team looked to the grand mansions and villas from the Thirties and Forties for architectural inspiration. As stated in the Official HBA Guide to the Parade, “This modern vintage villa features cutting edge design and finishes woven with the charm and grandeur of an era gone by. From a full-service bar to vast floor to ceiling windows to an epic outdoor area, the home begs for a crowd of guests. I loved the whole experience, and I hope to come back to Ailey soon!” Eva Lawlor, age 12, loved Bolshoi Ballet’s Summer Intensive in Connecticut. “Bolshoi ballet has been a great experience! I have grown so much as a dancer and as a person. It is incredible to meet so many people from all over the world. I’ve met girls from Venezuela, Switzerland, France and Germany! It is super interesting as well as a challenge to be instructed in Russian and to hear the bilingual translators switch constantly from Russian to English! I have learned so many new skills and love that I can dance all day long and experience new teaching styles! I feel like this has been one of the greatest experiences I’ve had in dance!” Natalie Wong, age 15, trained at American Ballet Theater Summer Intensive in California. “American Ballet Theater Summer Intensive CA has been such an amazing experience so far! It is so cool how dancers selected from all over the country come together to train with such amazing professionals. This summer intensive has been truly fascinating—teaching me so much more than actual dancing, such as ballet history, proper nutrition; and I’m even learning to do my own laundry! I’ve had so much fun making new friends and am looking forward to the next 2 weeks!” Nick Schroeder, age 16, attended Kairos Pro Dance Prep in Los Angeles, a program designed for advanced dancers interested in a commercial dance career in Los Angeles. This invitation-only program includes introductions and auditions with A-list Hollywood choreographers, specialized dance classes, dance business seminars, photo shoots and a video shoot on a Hollywood sound stage. Other DI dancers out and about are Sydney James, age 17, at Alonso King Lines in San Francisco; Clarisse Rosenthal, age 16, at Master Ballet in Scottsdale; Alyssa Pratt, age 13, a full scholarship at the Houston Ballet and attendance at The Rock School in Pennsylvania; Kara Yuan, age 9, Joffery Dallas; Avery Clevlen, age 11, Joffery Ballet NYC, and Louie Williams at NYCDA’s Summer Intensive in NYC. “I am so proud of the school DI has become. My dream from day one was the pursuit of excellence in training, and my goal for training has always been to have well-rounded technical dancers who could succeed in the dance world according to their dreams. I am thrilled for each of my dancer’s successes . . . they are my flowers, and DI is in full bloom,” notes Linda Holland, Founder, Owner and Artistic Director of Dance Institute. Dance Institute will celebrate its 10th anniversary May 15 2018, and the Performance Academy turns 8.

HE LAKEWAY Swim Center and Colin’s Hope participated in the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson, a global, annual drowning prevention awareness event, to offer a local lesson for community children. This June marked the nine year anniversary of the heartbreaking loss of 4-year-old Colin in a lifeguarded pool, surrounded by family and other adults. Grief and shock drove Colin’s parents to found Colin’s Hope to prevent childhood drowning, still the leading cause of unintended death for U.S. children ages 1–4. As of this date, Texas has lost 47 children to drowning in 2017. A 2014 survey by the American Red Cross found that 54% of Americans either can’t swim or don’t have all of the basic swimming skills. Additionally, in a 2006 Safe Kids Worldwide report, only 49% of parents surveyed indicated that they remain within arms’ reach of their child in the water.
