King Burton and Lady B Texas is not only the reigning king of cotton; it’s also home to the oldest working cotton gin in America: the Burton Farmers Gin. VINCENT FRIEDEWALD Special to the Banner

Few places hold as much significance in Texas history as Washington County.

It was there, at Washington-on-the-Brazos, that Lorenzo de Zavala and other Texian delegates assembled in 1836 to sign a declaration of independence from Mexico, and establish the Republic of Texas.

For any contemporary Texan enamored by the proud history of this once-republic, a visit to Washington-on-the-Brazos and Independence Hall is as essential a pilgrimage as a visit to the Alamo.

But Washington County is also

home to a lesser known vestige of more recent Texas history: the Burton Farmers Gin. Less than an hour from Washington-on-the-Brazos, and just a few football throws from Brenham, is the small town of Burton. Most people miss it, driving east to Houston or back west to Austin on U.S. 290. The speed limit around those parts is now 75 for stretches, so Burton can be a blur out the window, if you’re not looking for it.

Take the time to exit the highway, however, and you’ll drive back into time.

The 2015 Maifest royalty is participating in the Kids Helping Kids initiative benefiting Brenham Faith Mission, a non-profit organization providing assistance to the homeless and working poor in Washington County.

The 2015 Maifest Kids Helping Kids initiatives include participating in the Souper Bowl of Caring at H-E-B, collecting monetary donations and packaged snack items for the Summer SMART program, and participating as volunteers throughout the community.

City parks bring visitors from all over Brenham has an amazing park system for a city its size.

Its top notch facilities bring visitors from all over the state and country.

From Fireman’s Park to the newest addition at Hohlt Park, the city has about 185 acres dedicated to family-friendly activities and sporting events.

Brenham parks have a lot of history connected to them.

Fireman’s Park was the fi rst recorded public park in Brenham, Henderson Park hosted the Juneteenth celebrations back in the 1880s and Toubin Park tells the story of the 1866 burning of Brenham.

The parks and recreational attractions brings in $500,000 to $1 million in tax revenue and $6 million to $8 million that is spent here by people using those facilities each year, Blue Bell Aquatic Center The idea for the aquatic center originated in 1985 when a group of parents organized a swim meet with a team from Navasota. And the Brenham Dolphins were born.

In 1995, the Blue Bell Aquatic Center was part of an announced package of benefits citizens would receive if they approved a special sales tax for economical development and funding recreational facilities.

The aquatic center has six 25-meter lanes in its competition pool, a therapy pool built with private donations and a 5,500 square-foot outdoor facility with water slides and fun scapes.

The center opened Jan. 19, 2002, two years behind schedule due to the contractor going into default.

Visit ‘Where Texas Became Texas’ Site’s attractions and parkland open year-round with special activities

Located on 293 acres of lush park land, the picturesque Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site gives visitors unique insights into the lives and times of the 59 delegates who met on that very spot on March 2, 1836 to make a formal declaration of independence from Mexico. Enjoy yourself on, off land at Lake Somerville Lake Somerville State Park complex consists of four units: Birch Creek, Nails Creek, Lake Somerville Trailway, and the Somerville Wildlife Management Area. It is northwest of Brenham in Lee and Burleson counties. Birch Creek is 2,365 acres in Burleson County on the north shore, and Nails Creek consists of 3,155 acres in Lee County on the south shore near the west end of the reservoir. The two units are connected by a 13-mile trailway system. The Somerville Wildlife Management Area (WMA) consists of 3,180 acres with the Yegua Creek Compartment in southwest Burleson County and the Nails Creek Compartment in northeast Lee County.

The Somerville Reservoir was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Work was started in June 1962, and deliberate impoundment of water was begun in January of 1967. The dam is located on Yegua Creek, 20 miles upstream from its confluence with the Brazos River,

and about two miles south of Somerville. Somerville Reservoir covers 11,630 acres with a shoreline of 85 miles. Its main purposes are flood control, municipal water supply and recreation. The state park complex was leased from the federal government in 1969 and opened in 1970.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department manages the Somerville WMA under a license agreement and in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Flag Pond is a 350-acre impoundment in the Yegua Creek watershed; it is located within the Lake Somerville State Park along the Somerville Trailway.

The pond is a natural depression which has served as wetland habitat for waterfowl wintering (mid-October to mid-February) in the Lake Somerville vicinity. Flag Pond was originally developed by a private hunting club in 1926.

Enjoy, but do not disturb historical places. If you find an artifact, leave it in place and let park staff know.

Located at 105 S. Market in downtown Brenham, it is open the public Wednesdays from 1-4 p.m. and Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The museum is closed Sundays through Tuesdays and on Christmas Day, Thanksgiving and New Years Day. Current exhibits on display are: • Through 2016 — “The Civil War: Rally ‘Round Our Flag, Boys!â€? communicates the role of Texas in the Civil War, as part of an ongoing Civil War Sesquicentennial memorial. • Through 2015 — “The History of Washington Countyâ€? is the museum’s primary gallery exhibition.

The brewery brews three year rounds beers and four other seasonal brews.

PLEASANT HILL WINERY Opened in 1997, the Pleasant Hill winery has had more than 15 award-winning wines in the state of Texas, including numerous Gold Medals for its Blanc du Bois and a 2005 Lone Star Wine Competition Gold medal for its Collina Bianca.

The winery has weekend tasting and touring hours, and has 12 wines for sale at its location. Pleasant Hill also has a wine club, in which members can receive ordered wines at a discount and free regular tastings for members and one guest each.

SADDLEHORN WINERY Based in Burton, the Saddlehorn Winery had its first grape crush in 2009 sold its fi rst bottle in June 2010, and operates out of a renovated 12,000 sq ft horse barn.

Saddlehorn has 13 different wines, with three more on the way by the end of 2014. The winery has also recently fi nished an event room space that can be rented for weddings and other gatherings.

WINDY WINERY With 20 wines, Windy Winery has the most diverse selection in Washington County.

The vineyard opened in 2000, with the winery opening five years later.

Currently, Windy Winery has worked on remodeling the facility, which is located down Highway 50 near Independence.

TEXAS STAR WINERY Based in Chappell Hill, the Texas Star Winery tasting room is now open from Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

The winery opened in October 2014 and produces a variety of handmade fruit wines and grape wines.

Geocaching in the ‘Birthplace of Texas’ The Washington County Chamber of Commerce have hidden various caches across the county, in hopes of getting more people to visit the historic sites and fun locations in the area.

Unlike a normal scavenger hunt, these geocaches are hidden by the locations in spaces outside as a part of the chamber’s Birthplace of Texas GeoTour. The tour has 28 locations, including a three-part view of the historic homes of Washington County.

Of the 28 caches, 22 are new for the geotour.

The GeoTour launched in December of 2013, after placing of the caches began in June.

The concept of a geotour isn’t new, Website and Social Media Manager Jenny Mills said, but the Birth of Texas GeoTour is the fi rst in the state, with other towns in the state discussing ones for their areas in the near future.

If a geocacher is among the fi rst 250 to collect 25 total points — either by fi nding the geocaches, or by eating, shopping, and staying in Washington County — a cacher can receive a collectible geocoin, which can be placed in any cache that will hold it and can be tracked online.

Of the 250 coins, Mills said that 150 or so have been claimed by people who have com-

pleted the tour. Most have come from the state of Texas, but Mills said that there have been people who have visited from out-ofstate, like Colorado and Georgia, and outof-country, like the Netherlands and Puerto Rico.

While she said that a majority of the instate cachers haven’t stayed multiple days

in Washington County, the comments have been positive and even if someone stays only throughout the day, it means multiple people are seeing Washington County attractions and hopefully will return.

Established in 2004 by founders Brad and Jenny Stufflebeam, Home Sweet Farm focuses on giving its patrons foods that are naturally grown without artificial and chemical pesticides, fertilizers or herbicides. The farm focuses on heirloom vegetables, which they sell not only at the store, but also in a CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture.

The CSA, which was the fi rst CSA operating to serve the greater Houston area, has pick up locations at Home Sweet Farm, as well as locations throughout the Houston area, in order to provide CSA members a collection of fresh, steady supply of vegetables. Their CSA, which has members from Brenham to Katy, has a warm season of 16 weeks from March to July, and an eight week cool season, which ranges from October to December.

In September 2014, Home Sweet Farm moved into its new location, located on S. Park Street. That store is open six days a week, while the farmer’s market will be held every fi rst and third Sunday of the month.

The location gives the business a chance for better visibility with out-of-towners, who comprise roughly three-quarters of the patrons to Home Sweet Farm, and will give them a better space to work in expanded refrigerated products.

Brenham is known for its baseball and rightfully so. The Cubs are seven-time state champions — the last title coming in 2010. But football made its own state appearance in 2013, proving the school district offers more than just a premier baseball program.

The Brenham football team has made three appearances at state (2013, 2009 and 2002). Baseball won titles in 1970, ‘75, ‘76, ‘86, ‘87, ‘88 and 2010. Softball has also won several state championships along with individual student-athletes in track and field.

Baseball qualified for the UIL Regional Finals in 2014. The girl’s basketball team lost in the regional quarterfi nals in 2014 as well as did the girl’s soccer team. Two boy’s relay teams and the boy’s 100 meter dash qualified for state last year with the 4x100 meter relay claiming bronze medals. Football, volleyball and boy’s and girl’s basketball all reached the postseason in their most recent seasons.

Brenham High competes in UIL District 19-5A with Houston-area schools Stratford, Tomball, Tomball Memorial and Spring Woods. Magnolia, Magnolia West and Waller are also in the district.

In the fall Brenham offers football, girl’s volleyball, cross country and team tennis followed by swimming, basketball and soccer. The spring sports include: Golf, tennis, track and field, baseball and softball.

BCA football competes in TAPPS Six-Man Division III District 4 with Living Stones Christian, Texas Christian and Faith Academy.

Burton is the other school district located in Washington County. Panther football participates in UIL District 13-2A Division II along with Bremond, Snook, Milano, Granger, Bartlett and Somerville. The school also offers baseball, softball, basketball and girl’s volleyball.

Blinn College boasts one of the best junior college athletic programs in the nation. The Buccaneers are a member of the National Junior College Athletic

Independence Baptist Church is a good tour spot The Independence Baptist Church is a good tour spot for schools, churches and families.

The Independence Baptist Church was begun in August 1839 and is the oldest continuously serving Baptist church in Texas. Since it began, the church has never ceased to meet. The old adobe church burned in the spring of 1872 and this building was built on top of the old foundation in the fall of 1872.

Independence Baptist Church was the church of Sam Houston. In 1854, President Sam Houston was baptized in the Independence Baptist Church.

His wife, Margaret Moffette Lea, eight children, and mother-in-law were also members of this church. Mrs. Houston and her mother Mrs. Nancy Lea are buried across the street “Within sound of the bell.�

In 1845, the town of Independence was the wealthiest community in Texas and won the bid for a Texas university.

Continued from page 11 tion with Texas-y street names like Cedar and Brazos and Live Oak. And on Main Street, you’ll find the main attraction: the Burton Farmers Gin, and its proud custodian, the Texas Cotton Gin Museum.

First opened in August 1914, the Burton Farmers Gin is the oldest operating cotton gin in America. At one time, more than 4,000 system gins of its kind operated in Texas alone.

Today, the Burton Farmers Gin is the only survivor, and its 125 horsepower Bessemer Type IV oil engine, affectionately known as “Lady B,” is itself likely the only one still working anywhere in the U.S. These facts have helped earn the Burton Farmers Gin recognition by the Smithsonian Institution; designation as a Texas Historic Landmark and a National Historic Engineering Landmark; and of course, inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Burton Farmers Gin operated continuously from 1914 until 1974, when it ceased commercial use for good. After producing nearly 52,000 bales of cotton in 60 years, the gin lay

neglected among the wildflowers and the weeds for over a decade.

Then, in 1986, a wayward tourist from Ohio named Doug Hutchinson spotted the gin, and snooped around inside. What he discovered was a facility largely in disrepair and disarray, yes, but still home to countless untouched artifacts of engineering, industry, and agriculture. Upstairs in the manager’s office, Doug found all the original records and receipts from the day the gin opened, still stored away, untouched and ready for preservation.

Hutchinson called the Smithsonian Institution, which confi rmed he’d found something special. They also advised that if Lady B and the gin machinery could get running again, the Burton gin could claim the title of the oldest operating gin anywhere.

Thus began Operation Restoration, an effort that spanned four years and exhausted dozens of dedicated volunteers and experts. Once the restoration was complete, Lady B fi red up like new, powering the original LumCOTTON continued on page 34

Chappell Hill Chappell Hill is situated in the southeast portion of Washington County, which lies halfway between Houston and Austin on U.S. 290.

The town of Chappell Hill was founded in 1847 by Mary Hargrove Haller, granddaughter of Robert Wooding Chappell, for whom she named the town. Mary Haller’s husband, Jacob, was the town’s first postmaster. Mary Haller purchased the town site and it was divided into blocks, with streets and alleys laid off in a regular pattern. The sale of lots began in the fall of 1849.

Situated in the heart of Stephen F. Austin’s original colony, the Chappell Hill area had seen earlier efforts at settlement along nearby creeks. In the late 1840s, the town attracted settlers from prominent families of the Old South who were drawn to the fertile land of the Brazos River with its abundant stands of native cedar.

The area became an agricultural

community with cotton the principal crop.

Jacob and Mary Haller also built the Stagecoach Inn of Chappell Hill in 1850, which they operated until 1859 and continued under new ownership until 1871. Because the Inn was about halfway between Houston and Austin, it was a frequent stopping place for travelers along two major stagecoach lines.

The town became an important part of the Republic of Texas and later the State of Texas before the Civil War. The population reached a maximum of about 3,000 people; at the time, San Antonio and Galveston were the largest towns at around 8,000 people. A sawmill, a railroad line, five churches, and a Masonic Lodge were built in the area. Two colleges, Soule University for men and Chappell Hill Female College for women, were founded in 1856.

The men of Chappell Hill formed

part of the First Texas Lancers cavalry regiment during the Civil War and fought in Missouri, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Men from Chappell Hill served in numerous renowned Confederate units, including The Texas Brigade and Terry’s Texas Rangers, and saw action in most of

the major engagements of the Civil War. In addition, the Soule University building was used as a field hospital.

Chappell Hill In 1933, the Farmers Bank of Chappell Hill refused to close its doors when so ordered by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt during a March 6 to March 10 banking freeze. The owner of the bank took out an ad in a Boston newspaper protesting the order.

In addition, the summer SMART program provides a six-week academic enrichment course which teaches moral principles, improves reading skills, and introduces homeless children to hands-on, educational field trip experiences throughout the region.

Maifest is also expanding its Kids Helping Kids program to include the fi rst ever Royalty Run on Sunday, May 3. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program in Brenham.

“The Kids Helping Kids initiative exemplifies the Maifest mission in action. We are excited to have the commitment of the 2015 royalty and look forward to engaging all Maifest participants in this wonderful initiative,” said Thielemann.

“Along with our community service throughout the spring, our fi rst scheduled event will be the 125th Maifest Celebration, the evening of March 28,” Thielemann said. “We will honor our Hall of Fame inductees during a progressive dinner downtown, with the last stop at the community street dance, will play from 7-11 p.m. Everyone is invited.

“We have many events planned for Maifest on the weekend of May 1 through the 3rd this year, and we hope you will join us for a week of fun.

MAIFEST FACTS • Records show that there Maifests were not held in 1882, three years during World War I and six years during World War II. • Maifest’s roots can be traced back to 1874, when the Brenham Volkfest Association was formed and made plans for a May “picnic.” According to records, the fi rst picnic was held in Brenham on May 2, 1874. Events for children included sack races, trying to walk on a soaped log and greased pole climbing.

• The Volkfest Association selected its fi rst May queen in 1877. The queen and her maids of honor rode in a procession to the county fairgrounds, where the queen was crowned.

• The Volkfest Association, facing financial difficulties, turned over its property and facilities to the Brenham Fire Department in 1881. BFD began sponsoring Maifests celebrations in May of that year.

The first queen selected under BFD sponsorship was Frankie Foote. Her maid of honor was Em Giddings.

• The Maipole at Fireman’s Park was erected in 1986. It was donated by the Axel Baehren family.

• After the extended hiatus of Maifest during World War II, the Municipal Swimming Pool Association in 1948 expressed an interest in starting the celebration again. The purpose was to raise money to build a public swimming pool.

• Maifest activities at one point included a mule team pulling competition.

• During early Maifest parades, ornately decorated floats were pulled by horses or mules. That led to one observation: “Sometimes the horses became very skittish, lending excitement as well as beauty to the parade.”

We encourage everyone to come spend the day or weekend with us and enjoy the rich history of Chappell Hill and take in some shopping and enjoy a day in the country with family and friends.� “There will be plenty of parking and visitors are also encouraged to stop by information booths which will be set up at each end of Main Street with volunteers providing maps of the town and able to assist with questions about the festival,� said Durrenberger. “Chappell Hill will have plenty to offer from a packed children’s court with train rides, face painting, petting zoo and musical entertainment throughout the day at different locations throughout the festival and plenty of shopping for everyone.

“We will also have German food — things like potato pancakes, thuringer, smoked brat, sauerkraut on a bun, schnitzel, Jagersauce (mushroom sauce) and beverages including German beer throughout the festival.

“We will have a new area for a local wine exhibit, along with cheese and sausage trays to purchase.

“We have expanded our kids’ activities to include bull riding and laser tag, to name a few. Blue Bell ice cream with the Maifest Blue Bell flavor will be sold by the Lion’s Club.

“We will have fabulous night time music on Friday and Saturday nights, with German music throughout the afternoons.”

The Maifest kickoff picnic will be held Wednesday, April 29 with refreshments for the public at Fireman’s Park, and the fun will continue all week.

“We will have the self guided-walking tour with downtown stores displaying Maifest attire from April 17-May 13,” Thielemann said.

The Maifest Association is also compiling a commemorative book called “The Next 25 Years,” an extension of its fi rst collection of showcasing the fi rst 100 years.

Maifest is also completing a “What’s Maifest About” video later this spring, a 7-minute synopsis of how what Maifest is about, where it came from, and how it is pulled together each year, she added.

Continued from page 29 It was named after one of its founders, R.E.B. Baylor. Baylor University opened its doors in 1846 with a total of 24 students, both male and female.

(Later the women were separated into an independent institution, known as Baylor Women’s College.) The community has retained several significant historic structures and sites from its 19th-century peak. Its attractions include the Texas Baptist Historical Center; the home of Judge J.P. Coles, one of the Old Three Hundred of the Austin Colony; Baylor College Park; Old Independence Cemetery, a state historic site;, and Houston-Lea Family Cemetery. The Margaret Houston House is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Independence Baptist Church was instrumental in founding Baylor and Mary-Hardin Baylor colleges. A number of the early President’s of Baylor were also pastors of IBC. Dr. Henry Graves was a pastor of Independence Baptist Church and the fi rst president of Baylor. Dr. George Baines (great-grandfather of President Lyndon Baines Johnson) served as a pastor of Independence Baptist Church as

did many other notable Texas Baptist pastors.

While the church has built a new facility across the street from the Historic Church, the church still holds services in the old sanctuary for Christmas Eve Candlelight services, Elder Stateman’s Day, weddings, and other special occasions. Independence Baptist Church continues to minister to the community and is a growing, healthy church.

Although the congregation meets at the new facility across the street on most Sundays, they still meet at the historic church for special services.

When the Santa Fe Railroad wanted to establish a line through town, the city leaders refused to grant it a rightof-way. By the 1880s, most railroads bypassed the town, taking trade with them. As students found it difficult to get transportation to Independence, Baylor University officials decided in 1885 to move it to a more accessible location, Waco. The women’s college was moved to Belton, where it became known as the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

The site’s Visitor Center features interactive exhibits which present a timeline of the Texas Revolution and highlight the historic attractions located within the park; it also houses the spacious Washington Emporium Gift Shop, which offers snacks and a wide range of Texas-themed items and keepsakes. The Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site is a wonderfully preserved example of a 19th century stagecoach inn, located nearby in Anderson. And remember, entrance to the park grounds, Visitor Center and parking is always free.

With blooming flowers, a variety of butterflies and songbirds, Washington-on-the-Brazos has much to offer the nature lover, artist, photographer and anyone looking for beauty and peace. One of the highlights that visitors to Washington-on-the-Brazos enjoy is our bountiful wildflowers in the spring. Bluebonnets, gaillardia, coneflower and pink evening primrose cover sections of the park, creating spectacular opportunities for budding photographers. The bluebonnets alone are a favorite of many, and typically are in bloom from March through April. Being somewhat ephemeral, the location and timing of large masses of flowers is hard to predict, but a joy when discovered.

Areas around the Visitor Center and down the walking trail to the Wildflower Loop often offer visitors a view of the sweet scented state flower as well as an

The present church dates to 1872. The pulpit furniture dates to 1852. Sam Houston was baptized here and carved his and his wife’s initials in their family pew. Baylor University and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor began here.

This church has been called the mother church of Texas Baptist because of its significance to Texas Baptist history. The museum remains free thanks to the generous support of Texas Baptists.

The grounds of the church are filled with some of the oldest oak trees to be found in Texas. Inside you will fi nd the beauty of soft light streaming in from the stained glass windows imported from Belgium in 1872, or glowing from the chandelier which was imported from Germany in 1874.

The old chapel, which is now part of the museum, has recently undergone an extensive renovation, including the addition of a new air conditioning system. Come visit during the operating hours of the museum, or contact the director and schedule a tour of the church and the grounds after hours.

Star of the Republic Museum is celebrating Black history in Texas with its yearlong exhibit capturing the spirit of 19th-century black Texans and the challenges they faced before, during and after the Civil War. “Enduring Spirit: African Americans in 19th Century Texas” is on exhibit through Feb. 15, 2016, and described the challenges African American men and women faced in Texas in the 19th century. While the first African Americans in Texas were free men and women seeking opportunity and advancement, the laws of the newly-formed Republic of Texas forced them out and opened the door to thousands of enslaved people who served as the backbone of the labor force for almost 30 years. Finally gaining their freedom after the Civil War, they discovered their struggle was far from over. Artifacts on display include slave records, freedmen contracts and an oath of allegiance. Stoneware pottery made at Wilson Pottery near Seguin, the fi rst African American business in Texas, will be exhibited, as well as an example of the intricate Pine Burr pattern quilt.

The “Texas Independence Day Celebration” is a two-day celebration on Saturday, Feb. 28 and Sunday, March 1 from 10 a.m.5 p.m. The birthday celebration features live music, food, traditional crafts, living history presentations, firing demonstrations, historical encampments, keynote address from Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, and commemorative programs. Admission fees are waived for the site’s attractions. March 14, April 11, May 9, June 13, July 11, Aug. 8, Sept.12 and Oct. 10 — Stagecoach Days — 11 a.m.-3 p.m. (Fanthorp Inn): On the second Saturday from February through October, Fanthorp Inn will host Stagecoach Days, allowing visitors to experience what it was like to travel cross-country via stagecoach and learn about the Inn’s history and connection with early stage lines. There is no admission fee to visit the inn, with a suggested donation of $10 for adults and $5 for children for stagecoach rides. Rides last approximately 15 minutes; Inn tours last 30-45 minutes. Celebration — 11 a.m.-3 p.m. (Fanthorp Inn): Discover the music that inspired celebration and recreation in 19th century Texas with the program “Music Makes a Celebration,” presented by Homestead Strings at Fanthorp Inn. As one of early Texas’ most occupied stagecoach inns, Fanthorp often found itself as the focal point for parties, celebrations and great balls which brought delight to significant holidays such as New Years, Christmas and Texas Independence Day. Relive the joy that weary travelers and local citizens experienced as the Inn provided the largest accommodations in the area to host celebrations, parties and the occasional escape from the rugged Texas frontier. Relax in Rustic Round Top, one of the smallest incorporated communities in Texas, is on the old La Bahia Road between La Grange and Brenham in Fayette County.

The earliest settlers were Englishmen who came to the area from other parts of the United States. The family of Stephen Townsend arrived from Florida in 1826, and the name Townsend was the first to be associated with the site of Round Top. The family established a Presbyterian church, Florida Chapel and founded a Masonic lodge.

The Townsend family had the distinction of sending more men to the battle of San Jacinto than any other family. Joel Robinson, another Round Top resident, was the captor of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. His father, John Robinson, was a member of the First Congress of Texas. John Rice Jones Jr. settled in the Round Top area in 1831 and in

1835 was made the first postmaster general of Texas by the provisional government. Other important names associated with the earliest settlers were Taylor, Ledbetter and Alexander. The Ledbetter land was the site of the first Round Top Academy.

By the mid-1830s Round Top was identified as Jones Post Office.

The English were soon supplemented by Germans. In the early 1840s, Alwin H. Soergel, author, historian, musician, and member of the Adelsverein, settled in the Round Top area, bringing with him the beginnings of the Germanic traditions that characterize the area. He built a white house with an octagonal tower, which by 1847 was listed as the United States post office, with Henry A. Robertson as postmaster. The odd-shaped tower gave rise to the name Round Top. By 1850 Round Top had a

Round Top population of 150, two stores, two blacksmith shops, two taverns, a post office and a line of tri-weekly stages serving the predominantly German citizenry. According to some sources the first Round Top Fourth of July celebration, held in 1851, gave the community the distinction of having the oldest continuous Independence Day celebra-

tion west of the Mississippi.

During the Civil War, Round Top served as a recruiting station for the northern half of the county.

In 1866 the Rev. Adam Neuthard organized a Lutheran congregation; the massive old stone church completed in 1867 remained in use until 1991, along with its pipe organ carved

The first settlers were prosperous Anglo-American plantation owners who came here as early as 1826 and were active in political and military affairs. By the late 1840s, German immigrants settled here.

The original 1880s courthouse in Round Top burned in 1924 and was rebuilt at the present location on

the town square.

Major restorations were accomplished by the Bybee Foundation on Henkel Square, by the James Dick Foundation on Festival Hill, and by Miss Ima Hogg at Winedale.

Round Top has become an internationally recognized cultural center for the arts and education through the programs of the International Festival-Institute, founded in 1971.

The 1,200-seat concert hall at Festival Hill is the permanent home

of the Texas Festival Orchestra.

Residents have always taken pride in the care and preservation of their town. Those who have relocated here from places more metropolitan have learned to treasure this pocket of rural tranquility.

Today, Round Top has found new supporters, who along with lifelong residents and those descended from the earliest settlers, are working to preserve this unique living legacy.

Designated a “Famous Tree of Texas” by the Texas A&M Forest Service, the La Bahia Pecan tree on the Washington-on-the-Brazos Historic Site overlooks the historic ferry crossing where the Navasota and Brazos rivers meet,

on this picturesque TPWD state park. Likely germinated when a nut dropped from the saddlebags of a trader in the early 1800s, this stately pecan tree has been a silent observer to many of the events which shaped our beloved state. Tests by the Forest Service not only confirmed that it stood at the time of the Convention of 1836 when delegates drafted and adopted the Texas Declaration of Independence, but also revealed that its nearest relatives are in Mexico, more than 900 miles away. That means that the tree’s seed traveled with people along La Bahia Road as the settlement of Texas spurred more and more traffic through early Washington. The tree is not just a witness to Texas history, it is part of it. The aquatic center raised its prices for the first time in 10 years due to increasing maintenance cost and to relieve the Brenham Community Development Corp. of its obligation to fund one-third of the center’s operating cost.

BCDC is a city-created organization that oversees revenue from a special sales tax used for economic development and recreational facilities.

It funds part of the operating cost for the aquatic center. That amount came to $200,000 a year and Blue Bell Aquatic Center increased its rates to increase revenue from users.

The daily rates went up by $1 to $4 during non-summer and a $5-summer rate, the monthly rates increased by $10 to $35 and the yearly rates increased by $50 to $250 for individuals.

Fireman’s Park Fireman’s Park is home to the Brenham Maifest, an antique carousel and the home of the seven-time state champion Brenham High School baseball team.

Blinn College played baseball at the Fire-

man’s Park field in the early 1900s.

The volunteer fi re departments purchased the land in 1883 and built an eight-sided pavilion and a baseball field in 1884 before merging together to form the Brenham Fire Department.

The fire department also sponsored the Maifest celebration from 1881 until 1941.

Today, Fireman’s Park is still the location of Maifest, as well as a renovated antique carousel and the baseball field which has received national recognition through the years.

The fire department gave the park over to the city in March 1917 for cancellation of the department’s indebtedness to the city.

The carousel was thought to be built by the C. W. Parker Company in Kansas. A few of the horses also bear the flags of the Armitage-Hershell Company of New York, but the horses were carved by Charles W. Dare, a hobbyhorse manufacturer who started building carousels.

What set Dare’s horses apart from the more ornate horses of the Parker and Armitage-Hershell companies were the simple designs that he retained and the provision of a running martingale — a strap that connected the bridle with the chest strap preventing the horse from throwing its head back.

All of the horses in the carousel feature the running martingale which confi rms that they

were carved by Dare sometime between 1867 and 1901, and the carousel itself was manufactured by C. W. Parker.

The carousel was found in a field near the Clay Community and purchased by citizens from Brenham and Washington County in 1932, where it was restored and used during the county fair that year.

The Brenham Jaycees were the caretakers of the city owned carousel for many years, making the operation and maintenance very successful. The Jaycees undertook a restoration project of more than $10,000 which was donated by individuals and businesses.

The Brenham Noon Lions Club took over the carousel and, in 1999, removed much of the dirt under it and installed a brick paved floor making it easier to maintain the carousel and the building.

The city closed the carousel in 2005 and due to damage to the horses and began a restoration project which lasted three years.

Money was raised through the hotel occupancy tax, the Brenham Community Development Corporation and donations by individuals.

The city raised $120,000 to renovate the horses and the building. It took two years to PARKS continued on page 51

In 2008, the city reopened the carousel in conjunction with the dedication of the Ollie and Evelyn Finke Memorial Pavilion and a new kitchen, designed to look as close as possible to the original one.

Amenities at Fireman’s Park include a kitchen, Fireman’s Park Baseball Field, antique carousel, Finke Pavilion, Veterans Memorial Plaza, Greenwade Field, a volleyball court, a skate park and playground and picnic areas.

Hasskarl Tennis Center The center features six courts and is located near Brenham High School. It was a joint venture between the city of Brenham and the Brenham school district.

The center is located at the end of a walking trail, which “originates” in the downtown area.

Hattie Mae Flowers Park Brenham’s second smallest park also has ties to the old Alton Elementary and the Brenham Urban Renewal Agency.

Hattie Mae Flowers was the fi rst principal of Alton Elementary School and the first black female principal for Brenham Independent School District in 1967 after teaching English and homemaking at Mount Pleasant High School and Goodwill High School in

Washington County. She retired in 1971.

Flowers graduated from Pickard High School when she was 15 years old and went to Prairie View A&M for degrees in elementary education and administration which she earned in 1932.

Flowers, along with her sister Marie Hubert, sold the land forming the 4.17-acre park to the Brenham Urban Renewal Agency for $10 in December 1971.

Hattie Mae Flowers Park was dedicated in 1977 and includes a basketball court, a playground, picnic area and restrooms.

Henderson Park Across from Fireman’s Park lies Henderson Park, with its own rich history.

Henderson Park was named after Ed Henderson after he sold the land to the city of Brenham in segments to form the basis of the park.

Juneteenth celebrations were held at Henderson Park along with hosting an all-black pro minor baseball team. The park was once home to a large pavilion that hosted dances featuring legendary musicians such as B.B. King and his guitar Lucile, Joe Turner and Little Richard. The park was also home to all the athletic events for the black community.

Henderson originally planted corn and

cotton on the property before planting pecan trees which remain a prominent element of the park today.

Amenities at Henderson Park include Henderson Baseball Field, Fink Softball Field, Korthauer Softball Field, a playground areas, a kitchen with an open air canopy and a basketball court.

Hohlt Park Hohlt Park stemmed from a community assessment survey taken in 1996 where the community expressed the need for an athletic complex and more soccer, baseball and softball fields.

Washington County is the self proclaimed “Baseball Capital of Texas” and the county host several dozen tournaments a year.

Hohlt Park has eight baseball/softball fields, 11 soccer fields for youth and adult soccer, a nine-hole disc golf and a walking track that is a little under a mile.

Hohlt Park saw 93,500 visitors, 42 tournaments and 791 teams during 2011, including Washington County Youth Soccer Association, Washington County Little League and Washington County Youth Football League representing 1,469 young athletes in all three leagues.

Hohlt Park was dedicated May 9, 2002 and was named after Herbert and Letha Hohlt. The Hohlt family donated $250,000 for perpetual naming rights.

The park cost an estimated $5 million to construct and consist of more than 70-acres of land.

The newest addition is the Dr. Bobbie M. Dietrich Memorial Amphitheater, which was completed in 2012. Wilfred Dietrich contributed $250,000 to build the amphitheater in memory of his wife, who loved the performing arts. It is styled after a Greek theater, and donated it to the city after its six-month construction was completed.

The amphitheatre features seating for an audience of 250 and additional grass seating for a variety of events including theatrical plays, weddings and concerts. A dressing room area is available as well as lighting for evening performances.

Jackson Street Park At the end of West Tom Green Street at Jackson Street lies Jackson Street Park, where people can play tennis, basketball, sand volleyball and soccer. The 20.8-acre park also has a picnic area, barbecue pits, a walking trail and is one of three Brenham parks with a kitchen for parties.

C. W. and Caroline Bohne Memorial Hospital sold 19.964-acres to the city for the sum of $45,000 March 30, 1973 with Jackson Street Park officially dedicated in 1978.

Jerry Wilson Park Jerry Wilson Park is the smallest of the city’s parks with 1.86-acres and PARKS continued on page 54

Continued from page 53 was created after M. C. Thompson, of Washington County sold the land across from the Alton Elementary for $10 in February 1972.

Thompson sold the land to Brenham as a part of the city’s urban renewal program, and the park was named after a prominent member of the black community.

Jerry Wilson owned a store at Alamo and Chappell Hill streets called Wilson Food Market.

Linda Anderson Park Built as a joint project between Washington County and Brenham, the Linda Anderson Park was created for adult fast and slow pitch softball when it was dedicated May 1, 1983. Linda Anderson Field was the home field of Brenham High School softball team before the district built its new home, Alumni Field on BHS grounds.

The city converted two of the fields into baseball fields to accommodate the growing Washington Little League tournaments in 2009.

Clinton G. Anderson sold three parcels of land to Brenham in 1976, 1979 and 1980 and the park was named after Anderson’s mother. Brenham paid a total of $30 for the three parcels of land and entered into an agreement with Washington County to maintain half the land.

Toubin Park People can learn about the underground cisterns running throughout Brenham used to store rainwater for public fire fighting at Toubin Park, the newest addition to the park system directly in downtown Brenham.

The large system of public cisterns in early Brenham was a rarity and no other Texas cities were known to instal public cisterns or provide public services so early.

The land was donated by Leon and Mimi Toubin to create an area where people can learn about the history of Brenham, follow the details of the 1866 burning of Brenham and the large gunfight that led to that fi re, and learn how Brenham citizens banded together to protect themselves and their properties from oppressive Union Troops during the Reconstruction.

The Brenham Park and Recreation Advisory Board makes recommendations to the Brenham City Council to improve the parks system and attract more visitors to Brenham’s athletic facilities.

The advisory board has a five year master plan that allows planners to use the park space effectively and plan for growth including adding future parks and future fields.

After all, Brenham and Washington County is the “Baseball Capital of Texas.”
