Also included in these must-see contents are photos and descriptions of Dr. Victoria Guerra’s fabulous wedding to Dr. William Casey (page 28) and Sandra Sepulveda’s gorgeous marriage to Xavier Canales (page 34). In new features we introduce outstanding local chefs and their favorite recipes; we spotlight two of the Valley’s premier event planners; we list Fit Body Boot Camp’s right-now toning tips; we share the Villanueva family’s legacy of constructing dream homes; we highlight some very special musicians; and we congratulate Brenda Guerra of Special Flowers Couture Florist on her tenth anniversary. edding anticipation and excitement are accompanied by a good case of nerves, but the day Will Casey and I became husband and wife, we were decidedly calm. We knew with great certainty that we were meant for each other and that October 24, 2015 was the happy moment to immortalize our love. Since the beginning of our relationship we’d dreamed of marrying in the intimacy of our own home, and now we’d been planning a SECRET ceremony for three whole months. With the very able assistance of event planner A State of Mind’s Dee Galan, we coordinated an outdoor wedding. With such short lead time, Dee had to orchestrate a near-miracle for a non-traditional couple while keeping everything secret from our family and friends. By the day of the wedding, the team from Cantu’s Events had been hard at work for 30 hours. With more than JWPSZ žPXFST UIFZ USBOTGPSNFE PVS IPNF JOUP UIF romantic dreamland we’d envisioned. Adding to their

Although rain on one’s wedding day is said to symbolize marriage blessings, we were hoping that the continuous 20-hour downpour would cease before our guests arrived. Meanwhile, my three sisters/bridesmaids sequestered me indoors under the guise of “feminine bonding so I wouldn’t be able to witness the controlled chaos happening outside. As we girls were treated to the hair and makeup expertise of Antonio Von Marrok downstairs, Will and his groomsmen relaxed upstairs then dressed for their walk down the aisle. And while we enjoyed our pre-wedding pampering, our indefatigable Dee Galan was outside pumping water away from the lawn, renting and setting up tents, and generally rearranging our evening to accommodate the wet weather.

Those very busy months were marked by trips to and from college in San Antonio and home in Edinburg, Texas, before my fall graduation with a Master’s in Occupational Therapy from UT Health Science Center on December 12, 2015. Almost before we knew it, our wedding day arrived on December 19, 2015. The night before, my best girlfriends/bridesmaids, my mother and I gathered at a suite in the Casa de Palmas Hotel Renaissance in McAllen to enjoy appetizers and laughs at a pajama party. Early the next morning, we girls arrived at Lavish Beauty Lounge to be pampered with hairstyling and makeup artistry. Later my bridesmaids donned their wisteria-and-plum lace chiffon gowns while my mother and sisters helped me slip into my elegant David Tutera hand-beaded taffeta wedding gown featuring a dropped waistline and cascades of matching beaded lace. ver our years of dating, Jerry’s family and mine had become good friends. We all spent Christmas 2014 together under one beautiful log cabin roof in Ruidoso, New Mexico. After the commotion of gift-opening subsided, I was handed yet another box. I tore off the pretty paper and found roses and balloons covering a note from Jerry. He’d written, “Hello, Beautiful. Please sit on the couch for a surprise. Unbeknownst to me, he had previously set up a slide show featuring pictures of the two of us and screen shots of messages we’d exchanged throughout our three-anda--half-year relationship. I was moved to tears that he had kept all those sentiments. Then he invited me to join him on the back porch, where he greeted me on one knee near blazing wooden logs arranged atop the melting snow to spell “Will you marry me? Eleven very busy months later, on November 21, 2015, my mom and bridesmaids helped me slip into my
beautiful princess wedding gown. My dad escorted me to the altar where my beaming Jerry waited to become my husband. Dusk was just falling as we arrived at the sparkling outdoor reception. String lights in the trees glowed softly on the sequined gold and cream linens draping guest tables. Under a graceful white tent, centerpieces of blush pink and cream roses scented the air as the melody of “A Thousand Years played in the background. My groom and his mother surprised me and delighted the crowd with a choreographed mashup of oldies like the Tootsie Roll and newer moves in Gangnam style, and their energetic fun set the tone for the rest of the evening. Crystal Garza Roel Perez December 26, 2015

n Spring 2012 on South Padre Island, Crystal Garza was introduced to Roel (Roy) Perez by his cousin. Their romance started then, intensifying over time through a Cancun vacation three years later. While there, Roy took Crystal to a fabulous underground restaurant. Inside its provocative cave setting, amid sparkling chandeliers, scented candles and rose petals, Roy romantically proposed marriage. Happy and excited, they began planning a beautiful wedding for the day after Christmas 2015. On that appointed day, bright red poinsettias lined the church, providing striking contrast to the bride’s pure white gown and the groom’s crisp black tuxedo. A joyful crowd of family and friends witnessed the couple exchanging vows, then kissing and letting loose a balloon bouquet to mark the moment. Retreating to a sparkling reception ballroom, guests were greeted by vistas of white roses and hydrangeas,
tables exquisitely draped with beaded white cloths, and silver place settings graced by towering crystal vases of white blooms and sprays. To express their appreciation, Crystal and Roy had added elegant gift boxes containing a personal dessert for each guest. Guests also feasted at a lovely mini-dessert bar in addition to partaking of a stunning four-layer wedding cake decorated with tiers of fresh white roses and a chocolate groom’s cake themed for the Dallas Cowboys. When the celebrants weren’t dining , imbibing or visiting, they danced to Tejano and Country music or posed for memorable shots in a fun photo booth. But still more was yet to come. Following the reception, Roy’s parents hosted an after-party at their home with more delicious food and cocktails. Everyone was delighted to celebrate this joining of two lovers and to help them begin their new life together as Mr. and Mrs.

n my wedding day, excitement and fear were competing for supremacy in my head. While I delighted in knowing I was making the right decision to marry Joey, I still quaked at the idea of being the center of attention (as all brides are) because I am not beautiful when I cry. The day evolved smoothly, with my hairdresser/makeup artist producing just the looks I’d hoped for. The venue’s creative decorating team took my Pinterest board and made the ideas come to succulent life. Even our DJ was incredibly helpful, handling with aplomb my request for an unconventional wedding march. Any tears I’d worried about shedding were forgotten when I saw my soon-tobe husband lovingly watch me approach the altar. Our reception exceeded all expectations. Just so you’ll know, I am not one of those brides who resists food and drink at her wedding. I mean, I’d worked hard for months, so why shouldn’t I enjoy myself? Let’s just say the bartenders and caterers kept me happy all evening long. Finally we reached a point when all the refreshment tables had left to offer were margaritas and beer, so they cheerfully made beer-itas! /PX BT * SF FDU NPOUIT MBUFS * GFFM JODSFEJCMZ CMFTTFE that my excitement utterly beat down the fear. Everything went so well, in fact, that my friends joke we should throw another party just like that one ever year.

ome say the best foundation for a successful marriage is a solid friendship. Karina Gonzalez and Eduardo Longoria would agree with that truism, because their wedding occurred after nearly ten years of getting to know each other. First introduced by mutual friends, they were acquaintances who saw each other occasionally at group gatherings. Years later, a chance meeting at an exercise gym helped both realize they shared some real chemistry. Finally, after a mere two hours of sleep, the lovebirds jetted off later that morning on their seven-day honeymoon in Jamaica, Cozumel, and the Grand Cayman Islands. emember the old adage, “When life hands you a lemon, make lemonade? That’s an apt way to describe the wedding day that Claudia Lopez and Kole Jean scheduled for late October 2015. As it happened, a meticulously planned outdoor ceremony (life) met with unexpected downpours of rain (lemon), so the couple’s indefatigable wedding planner deftly shifted the events inside a rustically beautiful lodge at The Inn at Chachalaca Bend (delicious lemonade). Voila! Despite the unforeseen changes, everything turned out QFSGFDUMZ XJUI UPVDIJOH TVSQSJTFT GSPN TUBSU UP OJTI First, during the ceremony Claudia’s grandmother moved the assembly to tears by presenting the bride and groom with a cross that she and Claudia’s grandfather

After speaking their vows and being pronounced husband and wife, they sealed the deal by jumping over a broom, exchanging a kiss, then delighting onlookers by belting out the Aggie Fight Song, in honor of family members who are Texas A&M alumni. Not to be outdone, however, Kole later surprised Claudia with an acoustic serenade that melted her heart. When all was said and done, the new Mr. and Mrs. agreed that their wedding day couldn’t have turned out any more romantic, any more memorable. And their way of putting an exclamation mark on the old adage was for Claudia to drink champagne while Kole downed a cold Shiner beer! Ta-da!!

ori Sauceda and Eddie Garza shared a number of mutual friends and had known about each other for over ten years, but not until circumstances converged one night in 2012 did they recognize much more in common. Then they began dating in earnest, falling in love and enjoying real compatibility. Two years later Eddie arranged a vacation to Cabo San Lucas. On the third day, having schemed with hotel staff to set the stage, Eddie surprised Lori with a rose-petal path to chilled champagne, dessert, a dozen roses, and a sparkling engagement ring. Perhaps a little embarrassed by the effusively romantic setting he’d created, Eddie then fell to one knee and ironically implored Lori to make him “the most miserable man alive! Recovering from her shock with laughter, Lori accepted. That June 2014 engagement was followed by more than a year
of planning, leading to their long-anticipated wedding day on December 5, 2015. Poised and proud of her only daughter, Lori’s elegant mother escorted her to an altar decked with swaths of pale pink and wineDPMPSFE žPXFST #PUI XPNFO DPVME GFFM XBWFT PG MPWF emanating from the gathering of family members and friends. Now that they’ve returned from a fabulous honeymoon on the French Polynesian island of Tahiti, the new Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Garza feel immeasurable gratitude for the life they’ve been granted and for the love of their friends and families that helped make their wedding a perfectly glorious day.

alk about romantic! Amanda Garcia and Luke Lucio began to date after meeting in a 9th-grade computer class, and they’ve been together ever since—more than ten years already. After all that time, one might assume the relationship could go a little stale, right? WRONG! On their wedding day in December 2015, the thoughtful groom surprised his bride-to-be with a gift at 8:00 a.m. (a Yeti insulated cup inscribed with her new initials) and another surprise gift, every hour, all day long, until they met at the altar. Escorted there by both her father and stepfather, Amanda vowed to love and cherish Luke forever, and he echoed her heartfelt sentiments. Afterward, an elegant limousine appeared to take them from the church to their reception/dinner/dance on South Padre Island. ooking out over a glorious sunset on the beach, Peyton Kampas jokingly told her sweetie Raul De La Garza, “You’re going have a hard time beating this when you propose!” Minutes later she would rue that exclamation when Raul actually did ask for her hand in marriage! Over the previous six months, Raul had painstaking planned a meal and the romantic setting where he would ask Peyton to be his wife during a vacation to Cancun, Mexico with his family over New Year’s . The appointed day started as any other in paradise, with sunbathing and sand volleyball and margaritas on the beach. Halfway through the day, Raul’s parents pretended to attend a timeshare meeting at a local hotel. They returned without having made a purchase, but stated that the hotel had offered them a “complimentary dinner under the stars.” Curiously, Raul’s father soon began showing signs of a sudden “illness”, so the parents urged Peyton and Raul to take their place at dinner. Amid the hysteria that ensued, Peyton managed to answer yes. Raul now says the hardest part for him and his cohorts who helped pull off the surprise was keeping it secret for so long. hoever said opposites attract knew what they were talking about. Consider Luis, originally from sunny Arizona, who moved to McAllen to complete a residency at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance: loves the outdoors; likes trying exotic foods; a homebody who prefers movies on TV. Now consider Sandi, born and raised in Mission, Texas, aiming to relocate to the east coast to complete a Ph.D. in Education: hates hot weather; can eat the same meal every day; loves to socialize; has traveled widely outside the U.S. With all those differences, who would guess they could pair up successfully? Yet in a meeting over coffee just before Christmas 2013 they shared an instant connection. Eighteen months later, imagine a romantic weekend trip to South Padre Island: lovely outdoor dinner; cockroach intrudes; she screams bloody murder and runs away; he saves the day. That night, after walking on the beach and laughing at the bug, Luis got to one knee and proposed. The result? With their closest friends and family as witnesses, Luis and Sandi will become husband and wife in June 2016. Opposites surely do attract!

Not long after, hearing that she was seeking to know God at a local church, Jeremiah took the news as a sign he should get to know her better. Before long the couple discovered a shared faith and began attending weekly prayer meetings together. Once he felt they’d built a solid friendship, Jeremiah took Paula for a walk through local Bentsen State Park and asked her to be his girlfriend. This romantically “old-fashioned couple continued to date, growing their affection and regard for each
other into a real and committed love. In June 2015, four years BGUFS UIFJS STU LJTT +FSFNJBI BOE Paula revisited the same park. As luck (or destiny) would have it, Paula’s sandal fell off just as she sat on a bench. When Jeremiah bent to replace it on her foot, he knelt and pulled out a ring. Then, looking up into her eyes, he asked the all-important question and got the answer he craved.
-Jeremiah Gutierrez This sweet couple looks forward to their wedding on June 2, 2016. Perhaps they’ll always have a fondness for parks.

lbert and I met at the tender age of 15 at a quinceaĂąera to celebrate a mutual friend’s birthday. Albert expressed interest but I didn’t want anything serious. I wondered, “Why does this guy think I would be interested in a boy who likes to dance to old people’s music?â€? So, we went our separate ways for many years. Fast-forward to summer 2014, when Albert contacted me again. Though hesitant, I agreed to meet him for ice cream. In a courageous expression of unconditional love and devotion, he proposed marriage in the presence of both our families. At that moment our lives changed forever because I knew we were meant for each other. Now we happily anticipate our wedding on June 4, 2016. With God’s blessing, our love will last forever!

host, after dinner he stood to thank everyone who had joined us to mark my birthday. Then he looked at me and shared a verse from Ecclesiastes 3—the one about making everything beautiful in its time. Adding that I must know he loved me, my sweetheart got to one knee and asked me to marry him. What a birthday! I wonder if being beside that man forever will be time enough‌.
