James & James Formalwear

Fit & Tailored

CREATIVE IMAGE SHOP

Jaime Gutierrez & Astrid Gutierrez James & James Formalwear was founded in 1985 in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico, renting men’s tuxedos. A second Reynosa store opened ten years later. By 1998 a branch premiered in McAllen, Texas, and in 2004 a fourth store opened on McAllen’s 10th Street, still a tuxedo rental business. Today, however, James and James Formalwear stocks inventory from the most recognized fashion designers of men’s suits, tuxedos and formal accessories. Grooms, attendants, fathers of the bridal couple, and any men wishing to look their sharpest on dressy occasions should make James & James Formalwear his apparel headquarters.

• Semi-formal Daytime – Dark and navy suits can be sported year round, but white, or khaki suits are also attractive during warmer seasons. Four-in-hand ties, as seen with business suits, can be warn with these types of suits along with a nice button up shirt. Semi-formal Evening – Dark tuxedos with bow ties and comber buns or vests, or dark suits can be warn as an alternative; white jackets are can be warn for summer weddings. Shirts should have wing tipped or turn downed collars. Another touch is cumber buns for the groomsmen that match the bridesmaid’s dresses. • Formal Daytime – Tuxedos, tailcoats, gray strollers, or a less formal tuxedo jacket with pinstriped trousers are all appropriate options. • Formal Evening- This usually means a black tie event: black or navy tuxedos with cumber buns or vests, white pleated shirts, and bow ties. It is possible for the groom to wear a vest while his groomsmen wear cumber buns. However, if the wedding takes places during a warmer season a white dinner jacket with formal trousers is another option. • Ultra-formal Daytime- Cutaway coats with grey striped trousers, grey or black vests, an ascot or striped four-in-hand tie with patent leather shoes are typically seen at this type of event. Top hats, grey gloves, and spats are other touches you can add. Groomsmen should wear something similar but can wear a different shirt and tie. • Ultra-formal Evening- Black tailcoats with white pique waistcoats, white pique wing collared shirts, bow ties, or a white tie should be worn for this type of event. Patent leather shoes are recommended along small additions such as studs BOE DVGžJOLT

How to Get Started

You’ve found your soulmate.

He’s proposed and you’ve accepted. Now you’ve got to plan a wedding that will involve a jillion decisions, but where do you start? Use these general tips to form the foundation of your complete plan. Remember, the only way to eat an elephant is to take one bite at a time‌.

Top Wedding Planning Tips

1.

Make a statement. This is your wedding, no one else’s. No matter how much you admired a friend’s or relative’s event, this TIPVME SFžFDU ZPV BOE ZPVS BOD TP CF DSFBUJWF 6TF your relationship history, your heritage, or your favorite activities or hobbies as inspirations. The more you personalize, the better.

7.

Pick your battles. Determine not to obsess over every little detail. Sit down with your beloved and decide your top priorities together (read on), and then spend most of your budget, time, energy, and attention on those items.

Figure out your budget and your guest list. (These are among the toughest decisions you’ll make.) Use the budgeting worksheet on pages 144 to guide you through the process of allotting an appropriate expense to each item and keeping all costs organized. Be sensible: You may want that spectacular $20,000 dress you saw in a magazine, but if you also plan a large dinner reception for several hundred guests, your priorities might need adjusting. Look at your entire budget so you’ll know what ZPV DBO BGGPSE JO FBDI DBUFHPSZ WFOVF NVTJD žPXFST food, beverages, cake, entertainment, transportation, decorations, gifts, wedding planner, honeymoon, and so on.

2.

Do the homework. Wedding celebrations aren’t what they used to be, and now they even have their own vocabulary. Whether you hear “mermaid shape about gowns or “stephanotis about žPXFST NBLF TVSF ZPV LOPX UIF MJOHP TP ZPV BOE ZPVS vendors will be speaking the same language. You’ll avoid much confusion and frustration this way.

4.

Ask lots of questions. Never keep silent for fear your question is silly or dumb. 5.

Trust yourself. :PV EFÂ?OJUFMZ TIPVME TUVEZ VQ PO XFEEJOH FUJRVFUUF but, based on the size of your event and your budget, decide which rules apply to your particular situation.

6.

Get it in writing! Regardless of your budget, you are going to spend a considerable amount of money. Protect yourself by ensuring that every detail is committed to paper and signed by both the vendor and yourself. Using the contact list provided in this guide, check off each point before you sign. Every time you make any type of payment, keep a copy stapled to your invoice or letter of agreement, and store them together In the pockets of this binder.

Read customers’ reviews and check vendor references. Never sign any 1contract before calling each vendor’s past clients and checking reviews online. 9.

Don’t let the planning take over your life. You’re getting married because you’re in love and looking forward to a happy life, so don’t let a crash diet or the myriad details of planning overcome your happiness. Set aside wedding-free days when all talk of table cards and menus is forbidden.

10.

#ONSIDER THE BENEœTS OF HIRING A WEDDING PLANNER If you have a demanding job, are planning a destination wedding, are balancing work with motherhood, or have high aspirations for your wedding that will require considerable skill and time, professional help is well worth the investment. You’ll still get to make all the choices, but a professional will save you the legwork, run the errands, hire the vendors, negotiate the contracts, keep you on time and within budget, and maybe even save you money.

Casa Los Ebanos The property known as Casa Los Ebanos began as the Russell GBNJMZ IPNF JO BOE XBT occupied by the present owner’s mother until 2000. In January 2001, Martha and Taylor Blanton opened the grounds to the public as a private nature preserve and bird-watching venue. In May of that same year (and many birdwatchers later), a young woman dropped in and asked, “Could I have my wedding here?” In the 15 years since that important question, Casa Los Ebanos has proudly hosted hundreds of beautiful weddings.

Martha and Taylor are still actively involved in the daily operation of Casa Los Ebanos and believe that much of its success is due to the initiative and hard work of Macaria Bujanos, who has been with them since the beginning. Last fall another cheerful face came on board, Irene Atkinson Abrego. She too has proved incredibly organized and enthusiastic working with potential brides and grooms as well as existing clients. Santa Fe Steakhouse & Cantina At some point in the wedding planning process, everyone looks up from their checklist in complete horror when they realize there’s a whole other event that has totally been overlooked . . . the Rehearsal Dinner. The point of a rehearsal dinner is simple—your people are all in the same place, for maybe one of the only times in your life. Rehearsal dinners, when done well, can be a bright spot in the craziness a pre-wedding week often turns into—a precious few hours when you don’t have to juggle logistics or observe strict timelines. Most of the activities at a wedding reception like cake-cutting, STU EBODFT BOE DPDLUBJM IPVS BSF FTDIFXFE BU SFIFBSTBM dinners. (Let’s be clear: You don’t need to add those details to a rehearsal dinner.) However, one activity you may want to carry over is toasts. Food & Drinks

The most traditional format of a rehearsal dinner looks like this: All the people who will attend your rehearsal (DPNQMFUF XFEEJOH QBSUZ PGDJBOU JNNFEJBUF GBNJMZ BOE all partners of these people) meet directly afterwards at the Santa Fe Steakhouse. Depending upon the number of people, they gather for an intimate meal in the Wine Room (up to 12), in the Rooftop Terrace (a mid-size party of 25-50), or the Anasazi Room (up to 100). Wedding planning has a way of making everything seem complicated and stressful; the “Rehearsal Dinner is certainly not immune. But take away the capitalization, and suddenly the meal doesn’t have to be. As long as you have the right event consultants on your team, anything is possible. At the Santa Fe Steakhouse, you can even reframe your “Rehearsal Dinner into “a party we’re having for some of our favorite people in the world, and proceed with a simple plan from there. At the Santa Fe Steakhouse, you will most certainly end up with a delightful event both you and your guests will love. WRITTEN BY SUSANNA MADDRIGAL

Five Best Reasons to Hire a Wedding Planner 9OU‹LL SAVE TONS OF TIME If you have a demanding job, are balancing work with motherhood, are planning a destination wedding, or have high aspirations for your wedding that will require considerable skill and time, professional help is well worth the investment. Until they actually dig into the intricate process of planning a substantial ceremony and reception, most brides have no real grasp of the energy and effort required. When you hire a professional you still get to make all the fun choices, but the planner will save you the legwork, run the errands, handle the drudgework, and negotiate the contracts. 9OU‹LL ACTUALLY SAVE MONEY A professional wedding planner has experience working with all sizes of budgets and all types of weddings, unlike brides who are theoretically “reinventing the wheel.â€? Professional planners know the ins and outs of the local vendor territory, and they have connections that can bring real economy to your bottom line. The savings you’ll incur by hiring a wedding planner will more than compensate for the price of his/ her services. 9OU‹LL RECEIVE INVALUABLE ADVICE – Speaking of knowing the ins and outs‌ As someone who constantly surveys and operates within the wedding genre, your planner is aware of research that only a professional would know, and he/she will utilize those tricks for ZPVS CFOFÂ?U 8JUI FYQFSJFODF JO B WBTU WBSJFUZ PG XFEEJOH TUZMFT and venues, your planner can advise you about the latest trends JO GBTIJPO DPMPST UFYUJMFT EĂ‚DPS BOE FWFO EFTTFSUT

He/she will recognize the differences between workable ideas and less feasible innovations, providing guidance in how to achieve your dream through common-sense decisions. Moreover, a professional planner will know pitfalls to avoid from the get-go, preventing costly mistakes and unnecessary purchases (not to mention your blood, sweat and tears). 9OU‹LL AVOID ENDLESS FRUSTRATION AND STRESS – Nothing can guarantee complete release when approaching a life-changing event, but a professional wedding planner can relieve the busy bride-to-be of tremendous burdens and worry, allowing you precious time and mental space to enjoy your engagement, bridal showers, parties, rehearsal dinner, and big day much, much more. Ordering invitations, escort cards, and other necessary wedding prints requires ample time and patience. Save-the-dates are casual, enjoyable announcements of your engagement with your wedding date! It’s a less formal way to let your friends and family know that you are ready to take the next in life as a married couple and to prepare for the big celebration

Thank you cards are a thoughtful and personal way to show your sincere gratitude to your friends and family who joined you in your wedding celebration and for their generous gift. Normally blank stationery, they should be simple, elegant, and handwritten.

These are generally sent out 6-8 months before the wedding, 12 months if you are having a destination wedding.

Order a quantity of these when you order your save-thedates; the earlier the better.

Save-the-dates are sent to everyone you plan to invite. While less formal, save-the-dates can have a more entertaining feel with a sweet photo of you two and can come in different shapes and sizes. Think magnets, postcards, and much more!

It is good etiquette to send a thank you note within 2 weeks of receiving a gift before the wedding, while a thank you note should be sent no later than one month after your honeymoon for gifts received the day of the wedding.

)NVITATIONS The wedding invitation is a statement all on its own. It conveys the style and formality of your wedding as well as provides the necessary information of your celebration, with date, time, location, and reply information. The invitations are sent approximately 8-10 weeks before the wedding, 12 weeks for a destination wedding. Fresh Photo Trends A growing trend in photography is to turn an engagement picture into a SAVE THE DATE POSTCARD that your invitees will want to display and keep. Another is to magnetize the card’s back: instant fridge door EĂ‚DPS Moving far beyond traditional studio shots, engagement photos are increasingly being taken with props alluding to the upcoming wedding’s theme and with wardrobe and even location changes. One innovative trend is hiring a photographer to capture the PROPOSAL ON ÂœLM. It’s a wonderful surprise and a memory you’ll both want to show family and friends—and your someday-children. Of course, this requires some pre-planning on the groom’s part (Hint! Hint!). What fun everyone will have seeing the action from various points of view and spying themselves caught unaware. If you’re a savvy bride who wants a sexy wedding present for her groom, have the photographer pose you in a series of BOUDOIR SHOTS—pictures taken beforehand at a studio or in your home. 10 Top Wedding

Budget Tips

$

1.

Figure out who’s contributing. Talk with your family members about who will pay for what. Some brides’ families stick with tradition and pick up most of the tab, but it’s more common nowadays for the bride’s family, the groom’s family, and the couple to all chip in together. However, in some cases a family member will DPNNJU UP OBODJOH B DFSUBJO QBSU TVDI BT UIF DBLF DBUFSJOH PS žPXFST

2.

Get organized. Depending on the date you’ve set for the wedding, you’ll spend the next few months (or even years) allocating and keeping track of funds. Start by organizing your money EFUBJMT JO B TJOHMF QMBDF ,FFQ DPQJFT BOE MF UIFTF JUFNT together: (1) photos and clippings of ideas and inspiration, so you can pull them out when you meet with vendors; (2) all vendors and their contact information; (3) copies of vendors’ proposals/estimates plus notes from your meetings with them; (4) copies of all vendor contracts; and, (5) all receipts for wedding expenses, so you can stay on top of your budget.

5.

Be crystal-clear about your budget. Specify your price ranges to vendors from the very start. Being frank about your price point will eliminate surprises when the time comes to sign a contract.

6.

"E EXIBLE Saturday nights are always more costly than other weekdays or times of day, particularly during “high wedding seasons like June and July. Therefore, understand that the date and time you set for your event will affect your budget more than most other factors.

7.

Utilize double-duty. #Z BMM NFBOT UBLF UIF DFSFNPOZ žPXFST BMPOH UP UIF reception site, or arrange to share the cost (and design) of wedding decorations with the couple marrying directly before or after you that day. No one will know unless you tell them. To save on rental costs, borrow beautiful serving pieces and accessories, appointing a trusted friend or relative to be in charge of reception set-up and take-down. One of the ways you can personalize (and reduce the cost) of your wedding reception is to use familiar objects, including tablescapes and furniture pieces, from your own home as decorations. Think of what sets you and your groom apart from other couples; then capitalize on that hobby, activity, or personality trait in your dÊcor.

3.

8.

4.

9.

Set up a system. Money-management tricks can be huge helpers. Place all your wedding money in its own separate bank account, so you can easily track deposits and withdrawals without mixing or confusing them with non-wedding-related expenditures. Don’t make the mistake of using your regular bank account and assuming you’ll be able to keep score. Decide your priorities. Consider all the possible categories of spending for your dream wedding: bridal gown and formal wear; ceremony TJUF BOE PGDJBOU JOWJUBUJPOT QSJOUJOH BOE BEESFTTJOH postage; reception venue; transportation; rentals; food; CFWFSBHFT DBLF žPXFST EFDPSBUJPOT NVTJD FOUFSUBJONFOU photographer; videographer; honeymoon, and miscellaneous (Don’t omit that last one. See #8 and #9.) Pick the top three in importance to you, and allocate extra money for those. Then choose the three least important, and allocate a little less for them (or eliminate them altogether). As you check vendor prices for what you have in mind, be prepared to adjust upward or downward depending on what matters NPSF UP ZPV BOE ZPVS BODÂ

Ask about hidden costs. Inquire up front about any other costs such as taxes, service charges, and overtime fees, and make sure all written vendor estimates include those charges in the contract. Knowing all the possible expenses in advance will guarantee that your budget can cover them, saving possible embarrassment.

$ON‹T FORGET THE EXTRA COSTS Accept the fact that unforeseen expenditures are sure to arise. Small, easy-to-overlook details like marriage license fees, stamps for invitations and RSVP cards, ribbons for party favors, or candles for the dinner table can really add up. To be prepared, “pad your expense sheet in a couple of different categories so that unexpected costs won’t derail your budget.

10.

Plan to overspend. If you plan for unforeseen expenses beforehand, you XPOŒU FWFS BDUVBMMZ CMPX ZPVS CVEHFU &BSNBSL BCPVU WF percent of your overall budget for unplanned costs which may be incurred through emergencies or additions. Managing Your

Gift Registry

Your family and friends will express their congratulations through bridal showers and wedding gifts, so it makes sense to think about what you’d truly like to receive. A gift registry is like a child’s wish list to Santa, except the bride and groom don’t have to “be good to get everything they want! Without a registry, your friends will have to guess, and you could receive more things to return than to enjoy. Instead, here’s your chance to specify exactly what you both want for your new life together, JO QSFDJTF DIPJDFT PG DPMPS TJ[F BOE RVBOUJUZ

Decide what goes on your list. What’s your design style? You’ve just made a jillion selections about your ceremony and reception, so put that knowledge to work when thinking how you’ll craft your home. If you envision hosting dinner parties and entertaining regularly, your formal tastes may dictate china, crystal, sterling and similar houseware choices. On the other hand, if you see yourselves spending more time at backyard cookouts and football games, don’t register for dressy items that will be seldom used. For some, better choices are everyday stoneware and sturdy cookware.

How much do you like to cook? The stereotypical bachelor might not own a even saucepan, making do instead with takeout and microwave meals. However, if either of you enjoys grilling, baking, and prepping for meals, give serious attention to quality cookware, utensils, small appliances and other kitchen accessories.

Do you like to entertain? If not, you can keep it simple because you won’t need a bunch of the gift options out there, and the two of you are happy with some stylish coffee mugs and iced tea glasses. How often will you need more than six place settings? However, if you love the idea of sit-down luncheons and dinner parties, perhaps you’ll want to pick distinct glassware for highballs, cocktails, martinis, beers and wines as XFMM BT EFUBJMFE TFUT PG EJOOFSXBSF BOE OF DIJOB What household items do we really need? other dÊcor. Depending on the size of your living room, you’ll want a sofa or loveseat, occasional tables, easy chairs, lamps, rugs, and accessories. Will your home have both formal and informal eating areas? In addition to tables, chairs and dinnerware, think about lighting, storage, serving pieces, barware and linens. Mentally walk through all the rooms in a house, peeking inside cabinets and closets to compile a list of items that make up a normal household.

What are our hobbies? If you both love watching movies, sign up for that big-screen TV or recording/playback equipment. Wine lovers? Register for a wine-of-the-month club so you can try new varieties. Play sports? Athletic equipment is fair game for your gift registry, too.

What will we be like ten years from now? You won’t stay at today’s starting point. Your modest apartment or starter home will one day expand to larger and fancier digs, so allow for future growth when making your selections. Think of holidays ahead when the whole family comes to your (bigger) place. How many place settings of dinnerware will you need to make Thanksgiving comfortable for everyone? That dream vacation to faraway islands or mountains that you’re saving for can get a boost if you add boating accessories or winter wear to your wish list.

Think ahead about additions and/or replacements. Some stores offer “open stock purchasing, meaning that any item in a particular design of china, for instance, can be bought as an individual piece rather than as an entire set. Open stock makes it easy to replace a chipped dinner plate or add more soup spoons. Another advantage is that you’ll have the pieces you really want and won’t waste space storing odd bits that don’t get used.

Choose the right retailers. Just as you auditioned potential wedding vendors to choose the best ones, audition the top two or three retailers that carry your preferred items at reasonable prices. It’s helpful if the stores are located in multiple cities and states and offer online services. Consider these questions: What range of products does the store carry? Will they ship to addresses other than the buyer’s address? Will they ship in batches to save on processing costs? Does the store have a toll-free number and live telephone assistance? What is the return policy, and will returns be accepted at other locations? Can you track orders online? How long is the exchange or return period? Can cash refunds be issued in place of store credit?

Pick a range of price points. Be thoughtful of your friends and well-wishers. Some can afford to spend more than others, so include selections UIBU UISJGUZ GPMLT DBO DPOÂ?EFOUMZ HJWF XJUIPVU feeling cheap. If your generous loved ones have nearly exhausted all your selections, feel free to add new items to the master list (but limit them to choices you and your hubby will really use).

What about cash gifts? Many couples prefer money over material gifts, but give this subject very careful thought before acting on it. In most cases, asking for cash is crass and ill-mannered, so NEVER put a request in writing. Instead, do a regular gift registry of items you sincerely OFFE BOE XBOU NFBOXIJMF ZPV NJHIU DPOÂ?EF JO close friends or family members who could then informally pass the word that money is your gift preference.

Top Wedding Ceremony Tips &IND SOMEONE TO OFÂœCIATE WHOM YOU BOTH LOVE and admire, whether it’s your church pastor or a dear family friend. What’s most important is that you share a mutual respect for the person who leads you through your vows. If he or she can get to know you as a couple (through meetings or premarital counseling), that familiarity will foster a more personalized ceremony. Let both your families (and faiths) have a part. From the beginning, listen to both sides’ expectations for your wedding day. It’s the bridal couple’s special day, but discussing choices with both families will encourage everyone to feel included. Plan ahead from the start. Though it’s not the most romantic detail, look into marriage license requirements in your area right away. Although it’s not required, a handout program is the ideal place to list your wedding party and close family members. You can also thank them and your guests in the program. Having an outdoor wedding? Guests can use programs as fans. Give guests a hint about your traditions. If special rituals or activities will be included in your ceremony, explain them to your guests through the printed program. Some guests may not understand what’s going on, so your handout will help them enjoy the experience.

The ceremony IS your wedding. For some couples, a family priest or church is the basis of the planning process. For others, the ceremony may be built around a beloved location, a favorite piece of music, or your own love story.

Writing Your Vows

Modern couples often elect to put a spin on the traditional “I do’s by writing their own vows, using a favorite song, movie quote, or literary scene as inspiration. Talk it out. .BLF TVSF ZPV BOE ZPVS Â?BODĂ‚ TFF eye-to-eye. If one of you is more comfortable sticking to tradition, respect that. Adding personal touches to a ceremony can be done in many other ways.

Create an outline. Just like in English class, establish a framework or pattern. For instance, agree that both of you will begin talking about the other, then about yourselves as a couple, followed by the actual recitation of vows.

Consider logistics. If you agree to write your own vows, will you do it separately or work together? Will you share with each other or keep secret until the ceremony? (The formal wedding ceremony may not be best time to surprise your beloved.) Remember that similar writing styles will come across more smoothly than strikingly different wording. And be sure ZPVS PGÂ?DJBOU LOPXT XIBU ZPV JOUFOE UP TBZ he or she may ask faith-based questions or suggest something that makes your vows even more meaningful.

Find your voice. What overall tone do you hope to portray? Poetic, humorous, sentimental, touching, reminiscent, affectionate? You decide, but make sure you sound sincere and that what you say to each other has the ring of truth.

Be brief. Don’t get carried away or tell an extended story. Decide on a length and both stick to it. Practicing out loud (not necessarily together) with a timer will help you stay brief and to the point. If you go over three minutes, you need to cut back.

Below are a few tips and hints to keep in mind when making your reservations. Âť

Base the number of rooms you will be reserving on the number of out-of-town guests that are invited. If a large number is required, consider booking with 2 or 3 select hotels within the same area.

If check-in time is at 3pm and your wedding is at 5 or 6 pm, guests who check-in the day of the event will not have ample time to get settled into their rooms and prepare for the wedding. Depending on the times, your guests will know whether to check-in the day of or day before the wedding.

Âť

Inquire about shuttle services for guests. If your wedding is at a separate venue, a shuttle is convenient and considerate for your friends and family who can avoid the trouble of getting lost. Don’t forget that most hotels offer complimentary breakfast to guests free or at a price.

Âť

One of the hidden fees that may hit your wallet is “attrition – a penalty fee if rooms are not booked and unused. If at all possible, avoid signing an attrition clause; however, if you must sign, be sure that the contract includes a provision that will allow your group to adjust the room block by a certain date. This will give attending guests time to reserve their rooms, and you the time to make any needed changes with the hotel.

Âť

When reserving a block of rooms, be sure to book a few months in advance to avoid unavailable rooms and have the opportunity to receive a suitable room rate fee. Remember that it is a gracious gesture to give the hotel staff a thank you note for their services and hospitality. After all, without them your guests would not have a warm and comfortable bed to curl up in after a long night of wedding festivities!

Honeymoon Travel Tips Do your homework.

Before you go, acquaint yourself with your destination. In some large cities you won’t need a rental car because public transportation is around every corner, and parking is rarely available, anyway. Look into weather predictions about wherever you’re headed, and inquire about a Caribbean resort’s money-back guarantee in case of tropical storms. Find out what you’re actually purchasing at an “all-inclusive resort or spa. Will you still have to tip? Does your price include water sports or side trips? What about transportation to and from the airport?

Think it through beforehand.

Remember that you are the foreigner there, so don’t balk at their customs or foods. (“When in Rome‌ “ and all that.) Check about vaccinations for travel abroad; they often are required. In addition, invest in a newly updated printed guidebook about the area; it will offer some of the best and most realistic information about traveling to and within your destination.

Remember. . .

Credit cards and traveler’s checks are much recommended over wads of cash. You’ll want some paper money for souvenirs and other minor purchases, but your pre-determined honeymoon budget should still hold sway. Have your groom wear a money belt for safety’s sake.
