Our Annual Family Issue December is traditionally UpClose Magazine’s family issue — we profile family businesses and businesses that help families. In Fort Bend County, the community is supportive of local businesses and our businesses are great about supporting the community. In all of the successful businesses we’ve encountered over the last few years, the common thread is that they treat their employees and customers like family. This issue contains a then and now story about local and familyowned Alan’s Plumbing, which has five family members completing various business tasks. Our new partner, Aesthetics by Anjelica, named his business after his daughter to keep it all in the family. At Grand Parkway Pediatrics, they recently merged two practices into one to create a big, happy family. Lone Star Floors succeeds with three cousins at the helm, each stationed at one of their stores every day. At UpClose, we’re a family too! Our husband and wife team runs the business together, each taking on our own responsibilities and then coming together as a couple to tackle the big stuff. Our twin girls, off in different states for the school year, help us with tasks when they’re home. (This is senior year in college for them … our lives are about to change drastically when they start working in the real world.) We even have two dogs, Moose and Scout, who help us do our job by giving us pet cuddle time breaks.

And we don’t want to forget our longtime photographer, Jay, who is always there when we need him. That’s just what family does – they’re there for each other whenever it’s needed. rigendra and Shubhada Kale have lived in their Richmond home since 2016. “We’ve been wanting to change our kitchen for around five years and finally decided to do it,” Mrigendra says. “It was very dark before, with dark wood cabinets and countertops. Now it’s light and bright.” The couple chose Lone Star Floors to complete their kitchen remodel. “We heard from our neighbors that they do a great job, so we went to the store and met Ziad,” Shubhada says. “He did everything he promised he’d do, and he did it all right. Lone Star Floors knows what they’re doing. They’re very good at it.” The first thing you notice upon entering the room is the huge island with a textured, marbled gray Quartz countertop. The Lone Star Floors team also installed new cabinets with clean white lines, added a beautiful white and gray leaf-patterned backsplash, updated the butler’s pantry, and replaced the sink. “We had a double sink before, but we changed it to one big single sink,” Mrigendra, a pilot for Southwest Airlines, explains. “We had a hard time washing dishes in the double sink.” “Having one big sink might be the best update in the kitchen. It makes everything so much easier,” Shubhada adds, who is retired, and works in the kitchen often. At Lone Star Floors’ three Houston-area locations, owned and managed by cousins Ziad Mukhaimer, Imad Manour, and Mohamed Naser, they treat their customers like family. “We love doing full kitchen and bathroom remodels and have access to subcontractors like electricians and plumbers,” Mohamed says. “It’s easier for our clients to deal with one company, without having to handle the subcontractors themselves. The bottom line to our success is service.” The couple says that Ziad was at their home almost every day. “He kept us

A Legacy in the Making A

t family-owned Alan’s Plumbing, generations of service define their commitment to serving their beloved community. It all started with Alan himself. Alan Burkhalter and his wife, Jennifer, started a two-person operation almost 30 years ago. Today, they have an office space and warehouse, six vans, and multiple plumbers and apprentices serving the Missouri City/Sugar Land area. Alan and Jennifer’s three sons – Beau, Luke, and Jake – are all married and have all settled in Missouri City, right where they grew up. They all stayed in the plumbing business … Beau and Luke at Alan’s Plumbing with their parents, while Jake works in retail plumbing sales. “My boys have been helping their father with plumbing since they could hold a wrench,” says Jennifer. “It’s been almost 30 years and we still serve the same community. When we started working with our dad, we’d visit clients and they always wanted Alan himself. They always got Alan, but they got us too. We had to prove that we were as capable as our dad,” says Jake.
Beau adds, “I always observed my dad’s calmness and easy demeanor. I never saw him agitated with a customer.” “My grandfather believed in core values and integrity, and he passed these ideals on to us. Here at Alan’s Plumbing, hard work is all in the family,” Alan explains What do the boys remember most about what their dad taught them? Beau says, “You don’t quit until the job is finished … and finished right. If you work hard, you can play hard.” Luke says, “If you’re not happy with it, the homeowner definitely won’t be happy with it. You should always do your job like someone is coming behind you, checking your work.” Jake adds, “Always leave it better than it was before and always be proud of what you do.” “When we were young, we would ride along on service calls. We called it ‘riding the bucket’ because the van only had two seats, so we had to sit on a bucket in the back,” Luke says. “Because I was the youngest, it usually ended up being my spot,” adds Jake. “My son, Wyatt, came on his first service call with me when he was just five years old,” Luke
says. “He said, ‘as soon as I’m out of my car seat, I’m coming to work with you all the time!’” “I grew up with friends whose families had family businesses, but none of my friends went into those businesses,” says Beau. “You don’t realize how special a family business is until you’re a part of it … you just don’t understand the family legacy.” “I taught them everything I know about plumbing, transparency in pricing, and professionalism. by Alisha McMillen oncern for their community prompted Clements High School juniors Amal Iftikhar and Zoya Wyne to choose Community Awareness as their area of concern for their HOSA (Health Occupational Students of America) project. “We hope to spread awareness about Infectious Disease and provide ways the community can decrease the spread,” Zoya says. “It can be as simple as good hygiene.” The team’s research uncovered that simple actions like handwashing, vaccination, and sanitation can help to save lives and stop the spread of harmful illnesses. They stress that it’s very important to do our part in keeping our community safe, and individuals play an important role in keeping the community healthy. They also obtained evidence from Fort Bend County Health and Human Services, a public health agency that focuses on the investigation of outbreaks, infectious diseases, and prevention. “We have a lot of vulnerable people in Sugar Land, like the elderly, children, and those with weaker immune systems. We want to lower the spread of infectious disease and make it a healthier community,”Amal explains. Being in a family-focused city like Sugar Land and the surrounding communities makes the students’ goal even more important. “Fort Bend County Health and Human Services has research showing how Fort Bend County Health and Human Services consistent vaccination and public health efforts have helped reduce serious illnesses over time,” Amal says. “Its data supports our message that prevention methods such as

handwashing, vaccination, and good sanitation play a huge role in protecting vulnerable groups in Sugar Land.” Sugar Land is important to both students – they’ve both lived here almost their whole lives. “I love how welcoming it is and how easy it is to meet people,” Amal says. Zoya adds, “My neighborhood has a lot of people my age, and they’ve become friends since I’ve lived here so long.” Our friendly community full of people who care is a wonderful thing. Just be sure to wash your hands after meeting someone and shaking their hand.

When the Season Hurts: Caring for Yourself Through Holiday Grief A Timely Note from Leann Jenkins, Chaplain, Bereavement and Volunteer Coordinator with Pax Et Vita Hospice & Home Care

rief is a common, human emotion that we all experience. The holidays can be especially difficult when accompanied by grief that occurs when there is a loss: a loss of a friendship, career, a move, a diagnosis, or death. And it never goes away, it only lessens in intensity. When grief is fresh, the holidays can be exceptionally challenging. Pax Et Vita Hospice serves the residents of Fort Bend and Harris Counties by providing patients and their families with a whole-person approach to hospice care. We strive to meet their physical care needs, but also the social-emotional needs of both the patient and their family. Hospice Chaplaincy is available to all hospice patients and their families as grief is a prominent emotion experienced while a loved one is in hospice care. As we approach the holiday season filled with gatherings, celebrations, and memories, here is a list of suggestions for making the holidays less stressful and more memorable. 10 Tips for Surviving the Holidays While Grieving 1. Be gentle with yourself. Give yourself some extra grace and forgiveness. Let go of perfection. 2. Light a candle for your loved one. 3. Share funny and memorable stories. 4. Show honor through acts of kindness. Pay tribute to your loved one through acts of kindness. 5. Have an escape plan. Excuse yourself if gatherings are too much.
6. Don’t dismiss the entire holiday. Celebrate today somehow – decorate a table instead of the whole house or watch one movie instead of a marathon. 7. Allow time for feelings – if you have 500 tears to cry, don’t stop at 250. 8. Allow yourself to try something new this holiday. It is okay to keep the old AND to try something new. 9. Remember your loved one at a place of worship. 10. Share an activity your loved one enjoyed. Go to their favorite restaurant, outing, or park. Remember them by doing an activity they loved. A final recommendation is to share your time and talents with others. It is through sharing ourselves that we give meaning and purpose to our lives and brighten the lives of those around us. In the ensuing months, the teams of this mentor (Dr. Tang) and mentee (Dr. Khan) have evolved into one big family unit, serving families from Fort Bend to Memorial, and all around the Houston area. Dr. Khan manages one of the largest pediatric dental offices in all of Fort Bend and the surrounding areas, specializing in providing care for infants, children, and teens, as well as other individuals. Like Dr. Khan’s own team, Dr. Tang’s team was trained on how to provide proper pediatric dentistry. UpClose Magazine sat down with Dr. Khan and Dr. Tang to learn how the two offices have bonded to create the family environment that is so beneficial to kids and their parents. UpClose: How have the two teams handled the merging of your two offices into one combined group? Dr. Khan: Like any new changes, there were definitely some bumps in the road, and some hesitation with the new system came into play. In the end, both offices have been openminded and welcomed the new changes. Dr. Tang: Our teams have meshed and merged extremely well, working together for our patients. UpClose: As the leader of your practice, what do you feel is great about combining your teams? Dr. Khan: To acquire such a great practice in Memorial, with an accomplished pediatric dentist in Dr. Tang, this merger brings only good things. Dr. Tang: The ability to meet the needs of a larger market with someone I trust and admire is wonderful. UpClose: Why is it important for a business to feel like family, and how does it help you serve patients? Dr. Khan: It’s best for colleagues to work as a unit, and there’s no better unit than family. If this can be accomplished, the happiness spills over to patient care and allows us to be better practitioners. Dr. Tang: Because we care for children every day, we always feel like a part of our families’ extended network. UpClose: What do you appreciate about each other’s management style and work ethics? Dr. Khan: I think we both have an equal respect for each other. I am extremely organized
and love to create protocols to make things run smoothly. Dr. Tang, who has been practicing for 30 years, loves working with passion, and has a massive wealth of knowledge in dentistry. Dr. Tang: Dr. Khan and I balance our different skills and knowledge to build a stronger organization. UpClose: Tell me a little about your past relationship and why it made the transition easier. Dr. Khan: Dr. Tang was my former employer who taught and prepared me for the years to come. This mentor/mentee relationship is what allows us to pursue this transition. Dr. Tang: We worked together for a long enough time to be good friends as well as co-workers, which our teams see and emulate. “In both offices, we understand the importance of listening to patients, and helping them to feel comfortable and relaxed. This personal approach is evident in everything we do,” concludes Dr. Khan. “I learned this approach from Dr. Tang and am happy to be partnering to provide it to all of our patients in Houston and Fort Bend County.”
