ennifer Rae Torres is the Valedictorian for the Class of 2016. She is the daughter of Victor Torres and Blanca Rojas.
aron Alejandro Adame is the Salutatorian for the Class of 2016. He is the son of Gilma Adame and Olimpo Adame.
Jennifer earned the prestigious Superintendent’s High 5 honor for remaining at the top five percent of her class since her freshman year. She also received the following special honors: National Hispanic Scholar, Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar with Honor, QuestBridge College Prep Scholar, Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America (LEDA) Scholar, and Gates Millennium Scholar.
Aaron earned the prestigious Superintendent’s High 5 honor for remaining at the top five percent of his class since his freshman year. He is a QuestBridge Scholar and an Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar with Distinction. Aaron received the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award and is a three-time Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All Region Mariachi member.
Jennifer has held the following leadership positions: Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society President and Mu Alpha Theta National Mathematics Honor Society Treasurer. She is also a member of the National Honor Society, Academic Decathlon, Academic Masterminds, and University Interscholastic League (UIL) Lincoln Douglas Debate Team.
Aaron is the first chair violin in the Mariachi Del Sol musical ensemble and the captain of the cross-country team. He is also a member of Mu Alpha Theta National Mathematics Honor Society, Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society, and Business Professionals of America.
Jennifer plans to attend the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, to double major in mechanical engineering and chemistry. After completing her undergraduate studies, she plans to enroll in graduate school and obtain a doctorate in mechanical engineering. She hopes to become a practicing mechanical engineer for Engineers Without Borders, a nonprofit humanitarian organization that works to improve the quality of life in developing countries.

Aaron plans to attend Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, and major in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry. He hopes to enter medical school. Alongside his career in the medical field, he also hopes to be able to conduct scientific research, particularly in virology.

Raeann Elizabeth Rojas, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rojas, is this year’s third ranked honor student. Raeann earned the prestigious Superintendent’s High 5 honor for remaining at the top five percent of her class since her freshman year. She is also an Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar, Texas High School Aerospace Scholar, and proud member of the two-time state qualifying San Benito High School Greyhound Marching Band. Raeann is the secretary of the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society and the president of Mu Alpha Theta National Mathematics Honor Society. She was also a drum major for the Greyhound Marching Band. Raeann plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin and pursue a degree in applied mathematics. She would like to have a career at a prestigious research and development center, such as National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Fourth Honor Student Josselin Merary Tejada, the daughter of Rigoberto Tejada and Elida Aragon, is this year’s fourth ranked honor student. Josselin earned the prestigious Superintendent’s High 5 honor for remaining at the top five percent of her class since her freshman year. She is also a National Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society. Josselin has served as the Business Professionals of America President, Robotics Vice-President, Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society Treasurer, Leo’s Club Treasurer, and Business Professional of America Student Council representative. Josselin plans to study at The McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. Her goal is to become a certified public accountant.

Fifth Honor Student Aaron Matthew Soliz, the son of Adrian Soliz and Laura Soliz, is this year’s fifth ranked honor student. Aaron earned the prestigious Superintendent’s High 5 honor for remaining at the top five percent of his class since his freshman year. He is also an Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar and was a Texas Boys State participant. Aaron is a member of the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society, Business Professionals of America, and Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) student organization. Aaron plans to attend St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas, and pursue a master’s degree in computer science.
Joseph Ramiro Partida, the son of Maribel and Jose Ramiro Partida, Jr., is this year’s sixth ranked honor student. Joseph earned the prestigious Superintendent’s High 5 honor for remaining at the top five percent of his class since his freshman year. He received All-District selections for football and baseball, and is a recipient of a Texas A&M University - Kingsville football scholarship and Great-American Rivalry scholarship. Joseph served as a captain for the San Benito Greyhounds varsity football and varsity baseball teams. He was also the Future Farmers of America vice-president. Joseph plans to study and play football at Texas A&M University - Kingsville and major in Civil Engineering.

Seventh Honor Student Emily Rose Garcia, the daughter of Ricardo and Alma Garcia, is this year’s seventh ranked honor student. Emily earned the prestigious Superintendent’s High 5 honor for remaining at the top five percent of her class since her freshman year and received recognition for Perfect Attendance. She is also a Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) All-American Cheerleader, a Lower Valley Cotillion Club Debutante, a Blue Bonnet Girls State nominee, and a member of the Sigma Alpha Pi National Society of Leadership and Success. Emily served as captain of the San Benito High School cheerleading squad and secretary of the National Honor Society. Emily plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin and major in Biology. She would like to become a physical therapist.

Eigth Honor Student Amanda Marlene Torres, the daughter of Marisa Ramos and Jose Torres, is this year’s eighth ranked honor student. Amanda earned the prestigious Superintendent’s High 5 honor for remaining at the top five percent of her class since her freshman year. She is an inducted member of the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society and the Mu Alpha Theta National Mathematical Honor Society. Amanda has also participated in the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Women’s and Mixed Choirs at the district and regional levels. Amanda served as the Sergeant at Arms of the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society, Vice-President of the Mu Alpha Theta National Mathematical Honor Society, and President of the San Benito High School Choir. Amanda will study at The Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin, pursuing a master’s degree in Music Performance. She hopes to further her career as a performer and would like to eventually teach choir.

Katelyn Rose Ramirez, the daughter of David and Estela Ramirez, is this year’s ninth ranked honor student. Katelyn earned the prestigious Superintendent’s High 5 honor for remaining at the top five percent of her class since her freshman year. She is a two-time Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All-Region band member. Katelyn was a Business Professionals of America state alternate for individual competition (5th place) and a state qualifier for group competition (1st place). Katelyn is a section leader for the San Benito High School Greyhound Marching Band and parliamentarian for the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society. She is also a member of the Mu Alpha Theta National Mathematics Honor Society and Business Professionals of America. Katelyn plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin and major in Astronomy. Her goal is to obtain a doctorate degree in Astronomy and, then, work at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Mario Aguirre, the son of Mario Aguirre, Jr. and Hilda Aguirre, is this year’s tenth ranked honor student. Mario earned the prestigious Superintendent’s High 5 honor for remaining at the top five percent of his class since his freshman year. He also made the First-Team All-District for varsity basketball and was a captain for the San Benito Greyhounds varsity football team. Mario plans to earn a Doctorate of Pharmacy through the Cooperative Pharmacy Program in cooperation with The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Edinburg, and The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy.

ack in June of 2013, my father and I decided to launch a media platform recognizing and paying tribute to the students, educators, and leaders who are paving paths in excellence, not only for their own lives, but for the lives of others. You know the type. The ones that day in and day out intentionally put in the work to make their lives, their schools, and their communities better. It never ceases to amaze me, the brilliance among us in the Region One ESC school districts. Each day I’m encountering students and educators with amazing fortitude and perseverance. When it comes to the students featured in this issue —I was really impressed, but I also felt a feeling of refreshment to come across such brilliance at such a young age. Take these two humble, yet unwavering young women on this issue’s cover, for example. We bring them in for a photoshoot. One is shy, the other gregarious. While we unstiffen them in their marks before the camera, these beautiful personalities shine through, and they’re normal 17/18 year old young ladies. When I had a conversation with them, however, they spoke with such confidence and eloquence I felt like I was in a conversation with two 35-year-old executives. I’m really excited to see where we’ll find these young women in 10 years. Congrats to all of the graduates who busted their brains to get the win. Take a little time off and enjoy yourselves. DR. ADRIAN VEGA San Benito CISD only procures to advance their district with the most passionate educators. For this reason, a genuine interest for the induction of future leaders granted Dr. Adrian Vega the position of superintendent at San Benito CISD.
W
hilst growing up, Vega’s father, a retired Methodist minister and mother, a social worker, fostered in him the importance of service to the community. Through their compassion for others, he began his own path towards societal encouragement and support.
“I want San Benito to be leading the way; that’s the thing that wakes me up everyday,” said Vega. With their collaborative dedication, San Benito will be launching new district plans geared towards integrating a completely new platform by the year 2021.
On his first day at San Benito, he made sure he was up to speed with every department and encouraged teachers, students, and staff to voice their judgement and concerns on current methods.
“My goal is that when we start the next school year, we will be in year one of our five-year strategic plan” said Vega.
“My passion is to ensure that everybody has an opportunity to experience and realize their full potential,” said Vega.
This exciting project known as “Reimagine 2012” will remodel curriculum instruction, communication and public relations, finance, facilities, and p-16-college preparation policies. By modernizing these areas, San Benito will be providing students with an education in accordance with new age techniques.
His experience at different districts both locally and state-wide has not only broadened his perspective, but cultivated his understanding of the education system. The insight he’s gathered has enabled him to visualize the potential San Benito CISD has for scholastic achievement. Once he recognized San Benito’s zealous spirit for success, he aspired to give them nothing less in return.

Harlingen High School South Seniors “Commit to Complete" By: Brianna Vela Garcia, MJ Coordinator of Marketing Services Harlingen CISD
Four hundred and fifty Harlingen High School South seniors celebrated the next step in their academic lives at a Commit to Complete (C2C) event on Tuesday, May 31, by signing a pledge to complete their college education or military contract.
S
chool and district administrators joined students as they vowed to finish strong in their journey towards completing their bachelor’s degree, associate degree, or military contract.
“We commend the Class of 2016 for setting the bar high as they work toward achieving their higher education goals,” said Dr. Cavazos. “I am so proud and humbled to be able to share this momentous occasion with our students.” HHSS College and Career Advisor, Crystal Castaneda has enjoyed working with the senior class and watching them get accepted into so many different schools. “They have worked really hard this year and they deserved to be recognized for their goals and for their plans,” she said. “This event is not just about our students getting to college, but about getting through it as well. We are here to support them every step of the way.” For senior, Alex Cancino the C2C event marked the culmination of all of his hard work in getting good grades so that he could earn acceptance at one of his top choice schools. “The bond my senior class has is what I am going to miss the most about high school,” Rodriguez said. “But I am excited to see all of us taking the initiative to want to go to college and having the drive to complete it." I will most likelyy spend four to sixx years at UTRGV V to receive myy masters’ degree in both majors. 4. Cesar Garcia, Jr. Son of Mr. Cesar Garcia and Ms. Elisa De Leon After graduation, I will be attendingg Texas A&M Universityy where I plan to studyy civil engineering. I hope to finish myy degree plan within four years. After several years working, I plan to obtain myy master's degree in mechanical engineeringg and start myy own construction and engineeringg firm in Harlingen, while developingg scholarship opportunities that encourage students to pursue engineeringg degrees at Texas' flagship colleges. Without myy faith in God, who has blessed me beyond measure, and support from myy mom, dad, brother Caleb, and myy godparents, I could not have accomplished manyy off the goals I have set. I know w that with their constant support I can continue to succeed in college and thereafter.
5. Mia Concepcion Aguirre (Senior Class President) Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Antonio and Melissa Elizondo Aguirre graduation, I will be attendingg Notre Dame Universityy where I will studyy political science. I have been blessed with amazingg financial support from Notre Dame and I am so excited to be joiningg the Fightingg Irish class off 2020. After attainingg myy bachelor degree, I hope to continue on to law w school and receive myy J.D. Anthony Ricardo Perez Son of Mr. and Mrs. Ricardo and Emilia Perez After graduation, I plan to attend Texas A&M University-Kingsville where I plan to studyy music and receive a music education degree. I plan to becomee a band director after I am finished with myy studies. I will studyy music at Kingsville and earn a master’s degree in music educatioon. I will then applyy for a job in Texas as a band director and see where that takes me. I will also have a teacher certification when n I earn myy degree, so I can become a teacher iff I desire. I would like to thankk myy familyy and friends for supportingg me despite myy faults. I plan to take these steps to pursue a successful and prosperous lifestyle, and I suggest all others do so as well.

Paola Woo Daughter of Ms. Veronica Guizar After graduation, I will be attendingg The Universityy off North Texas where I plan to major in chemistryy and minor in business in order to become a forensic scientist. After graduating, I plan to pursue a doctorate in forensic science with the ultimate goal off workingg for a federal agency. I couldn't have achieved myy success without the lovingg support off myy mother, family, friends and teachers.
8. Michael Julian Cantu Son of Mr. and Mrs. Julio and Mary Ann Cantu After graduation, I plan to attend Texas A&M Universityy where I will studyy chemical engineeringg in order to become an engineer. While at A&M, I will be attendingg the Dwight Lookk College off Engineeringg and plan to attend until I receive myy master’s degree. I would like to thankk God, myy parents, and close friends for their support and love throughout the years, as well as Mrs. Moore for her support and inspiration in helpingg me realize and achieve myy goals.

Sandra Alicia Salazar Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David and Norma Salazar After I graduate, I will be attendingg The Universityy off Texas-Rio Grande Valleyy where I plan to major in biologyy and minor in art. Myy ultimate goal is to receive a doctoral degree in physical therapyy and workk here in the Valley. I also hope to meld myy health profession and myy passion for art so that I can one dayy design health-related, educational animations or coloringg books for patients and children. A heartfelt thanks myy mom, dad, brother, and grandpa, as well as the rest off myy familyy for helpingg me achieve so much and for their unwaveringg love, care, and support! I would also like to thankk all myy teachers, who gave me the necessaryy tools to succeed. Thankk you also to the counselors, and the rest off the school personnel who fed us, kept the school clean, and kept us safe. Most of all, I want to thankk God because I have been trulyy blessed!

Leonel Solis, Jr. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonel and Alicia Solis Upon graduation, I will be attendingg The Universityy off Texas at San Antonio where I will studyy pre-med in order to become a pediatrician. Once I have completed myy first year off college, I will applyy to the JAMP program to further myy preparation for medical school. I hope to graduate with myy bachelor degree in biologyy and minor in chemistry. Myy next goal would be acceptance into medical school, where I will be one step closer to myy dream job off becomingg an MD. John Nicolas Rivera is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Rivera and Marina Quilantan-Rivera of Lyford, Texas. John is the Valedictorian of the Lyford High School graduating class of 2016. John will be attending Texas A&M University in College Station to pursue a degree in Biomedical Sciences and join the Corps of Cadets. After graduation from college, he plans to enlist in the U.S. Navy, and while serving his Country, he plans to pursue his medical degree.
Victoria Jerine Burns is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles and Lorraine Burns of Armstrong, Texas. Victoria is the Salutatorian of the Lyford High School graduating class of 2016. Victoria will be attending Texas A&M University in College Station to pursue a degree in Animal Science with a science option. After graduation from college, she plans to attend Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine to pursue a career as a Veterinarian.

Bailey Anne Scogin is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cody and Wendy Scogin of Raymondville, Texas. She ranks third in the Lyford High School graduating class of 2016. Bailey will be attending Texas A&M University pursing a degree in Plant & Environmental Soil Science. She is planning a career as an Agronomist in order to develop and promote more sustainable methods of production for our growing world population.
Daisy De Los Reyes-Guerra is the daughter of Febedina Guerra of Sebastian, Texas. Daisy ranks fourth in the Lyford High School graduating class of 2016. She will be attending The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg, Texas. Her plans are to major in Pre-Nursing to become a Registered Nurse. She plans to continue with her education after graduation to eventually become a Nurse Practitioner.
Jacob Roy Salinas is the son of Juanita G. Tamez, Rachel Tamez, and Ruby & Leonel Salinas Jr. of Lasara, Texas. Jacob ranks fifth in the Lyford High School graduating class of 2016. He will be attending Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. His plans are to major in nursing to become a Registered Nurse. After graduation, Jacob plans to attend graduate school to become a Physician Assistant. His goal is to work in the medical field with a specialty in pediatrics.
Morgan Ashley Thomas is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mitch and Linda Thomas of Raymondville, Texas. Morgan ranks sixth in the Lyford High School graduating class of 2016. Morgan will be attending Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. She will double major in Animal Science & Agriculture Economics in addition to attending law school and becoming an Agricultural Lobbyist.

David will be attending Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. He plans to major in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Business. David plans to pursue a career in Engineering.
Cecilia Esmeralda Salazar is the daughter of the late Maria Anna Montes & Bertha and Robert Bentley of Lyford, Texas. Cecilia ranks eighth in the Lyford High School graduating class of 2016. Cecilia will be attending the Art Institute in San Antonio, Texas. She plans to major in Digital Filmmaking and Video Production in hopes of becoming a well-known director.
Amanda Lee Paredez is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Felix and Rachel Paredez of Sebastian, Texas. She ranks ninth in the Lyford High School graduating class of 2016. Amanda will be attending Texas State Technical College in Harlingen, Texas to receive an Associate’s Degree in Business Management. In addition, Amanda will attend The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg, Texas to pursue her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management. Amanda also plans to attain a certificate in Cosmetology.

All of my numerous accomplishments and who I am can be attributed to my teachers, my parents and to God - they are the motors who have provided me with the strength and the will to continue pushing myself to my limits, limits that I was never aware I could reach; and for that, I am eternally grateful. This crazy adventure of high school, although generally fun, has also posed several adversities in my life that I was forced to overcome. However, it is these adversities that have left me no other alternative but to remain strong throughout it all and to remember that the best part of the adventure is to continue on to college. Ultimately, as the top ranked senior of the Mighty Gladiator Graduating Class of 2016, I simply want to express gratitude and respect for my fellow classmates who have worked arduously to accomplish another milestone in their lives. In elementary, they were picking me up from UIL practice and taking me food at the meets. In middle school, they would pick me up from sports practice and would go to my games. In high school, they did both. They have always given me everything I needed to do well in school, from supplies to emotional support. They have made me who I am and I would like to thank them indefinitely.”

Garcia - The University of Texas at Austin - Finance “While in high school I’ve really enjoyed my experiences in debate and speech and I think these experiences have really had a lasting impression on me and made me want to purse a future in finance and investment banking in the future. I’ve worked pretty hard to be in the top ten of my class and finally reaching this goal - it’s a real honor. I attribute my academic success to my teachers and coaches, but most especially to my parents, all whom have had a lasting impact on me and without them I wouldn’t be where I am. I love how at the end of all the long hours and tiring practices we are rewarded for achievements. That is how I learned to view my idea of what should be expected of myself for school. Being in an extracurricular, I believe, has helped me learn so much about myself and pushed me into striving for higher achievements than what I originally thought I could accomplish. I feel honored to be in the top because it shows how I, like many other students, can explore their different interests while still doing well in school. I believe that students should be more open into learning who they are outside of the traditional classroom setting to help them learn how all aspects are important in the creation of myself as a whole. I was just taught to always do my best and that was what I did. After I found out I was ranked number 10 I was so excited to see my efforts had paid off and I kept working hard to keep my spot. Now that I’m graduating, I’m honored and proud that I proved to my family and friends, and especially to myself, that I could do it. I can’t thank everyone enough including all my teachers, counselors and friends who were there for me throughout my high school career to help me in everything I needed, but I am most grateful toward my parents and family since they have always been with me and they were the ones who pushed me and motivated me to where I am now.
